Can't wait for the new version for vb4. Currently I can't upload with this mod because it keeps the mysql database open for too long. It'd be amazing if you're actually working on using vb4's current upload system with this because it has a status bar and the works. Good work! Some things I would love to see in Downloads are file mirrors and certain mirrors only available for 'premium members'.

I can't wait for a vb4 version to be released. It's the only reason I haven't moved over to vb4 just yet as my site relies too heavily on the downloads section.

I made this for my site. Each file has a "relation" number, and if two files has same number, they are related. If the file has related files, they show under description. One extra SQL query.

yup, as carrlos said. my forum is only there because of your mods =) 90% of my users are on my site because of the downloads

As far as I can see the templates are OK and security tokes settings are in there. The only thing I did was to upgrade vBA CMPS to 3.2.1 and upgraded vB from 3.8.4 pl1 to pl2.

Adding custom fields isn't possible at the moment.

Yes, you can. There's no check on the link field.

I don't think this is the problem, because it's a file of 9 mb and normally I upload files of 16 mb
The php.ini is setup to 25 mb so that should not be the problem either.

I will check if the error also occur's when linking to files.

I've just seen the files of 16mb are linked too. Linking is ok, no problems there. So I think you indeed were correct with the assumption that it had to do with big file uploads.

However, it still says in php.ini:
file_uploads = On
upload_max_filesize = 25M
default_socket_timeout = 60

Is there another place where I can change something so bigger file uploads won't time-out? I've got all access on that server including root access.

Thanks Jelle, I think I got some idea's about where to look:
max_execution_time = 30 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds
max_input_time = 60 ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data
memory_limit = 16M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume

Seems the memory limit is oke for a 9 mb big file, but the max. execution time is limited to 30 secs, which might cause the upload to stop, correct?

In that case for security reasons (shared server with a lot of accounts) I can better leave this as it is now and upload the files by ftp and link to it.

I can't seem to find an answer in this thread, but apologies if this has already been answered.

I'd like to upload podcasts (mp3) and then link them into the forum, however the link generated by DownloadsII adds a value to the URL. Is there a way to get the uploaded URL to be that of the file location, including the files extension?

I can make an mp3 file play in the forum but not a URL.

Unless there is a much easier way to today.

That's because of the default upload limit of PHP.

You need to create a file named .htaccess (note the period in front of the name). Put the following two lines into the file:

php_value upload_max_filesize 30M
php_value post_max_size 30M

Upload the file into your forum directory (the same location where downloads.php is located.)

This will increase the size of the file you can upload to 30MB.

Yes that is no problem. A .htaccess file can contain several codes.
You can safely add the php value code to your existing .htaccess file.

However, if your problem still resides you need to contact your host.
It can also be the hosting company has set a limit, then these changes won't have any effect. In that case you have to ask your hosting company also.

Opps..it causes 500 Internal Server Error after I have embedded the code into the present .htaccess file...any advice?

In that case your hosting provider has protected these settings, he's probably using php fastcgi (php in cgi mode, mostly used in combination with phpsuexec).

Try doing the following. Instead of using a .htacces file, create a php.ini.
Put in there:
upload_max_filesize 30M
php_value post_max_size 30M

Try again. If this works but you get another error (timeout or security token missing), you can try and add this setting to the php.ini you made:
max_execution_time = 180
This increases the time to 3 minutes. If you have big files, it might be you have to increase this to a higher setting.

You could also add:
max_input_time = 180

The default of both these settings is 60. If you get an error again, then your hosting company has protected the possibility to use your own php.ini files too.
In that case the only solution is to contact your hosting company.

That's not a phrase which is part of DownloadsII itself. You probably have some kind of points system (shop) installed, which integrates into DownloadsII. Check the configuration of that mod to solve this.

There's no way to import post and their attachments at the moment. The "import" AdminCP feature is there to import all files from an FTP folder you specify, so that's not what you're looking for.

I already released DownloadsII v6 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=231427) (vB4 only), which is a full recode with several new features (report button, advanced search, quick reply, ...) :)
So I currently have no plans for extending the vB3 release any further.

I know, but it's impossible to develop two versions. I will continue to fix bugs and security issues, but that's probably all.

Now it has bugfix + security support, but when 4.1 is released the bugfix support will be dropped. And 3.8 will be end of life when 4.2 is released.

I'm not a big vB4 fan too at the moment (and I'm not upgrading my own site at this moment), but it's a dead end. I hope 4.0.2 will be more stable, cause 4.0.1 introduced two new bugs (AJAX username suggestion and custom profile tabs not working any more). But I'm really disappointed too at the moment and it's not getting any better with such bad "maintenance" releases (200 bugs "fixed", but still 2000+ open on the tracker) :)

Indeed, you're right, so I'm even more glad that I will stop upgrading vB, because I bought a lifetime license with at least lifetime security fixes was told me before.
But vB keeps changing their agreements over the years which is a bad thing, a lifetime is shortened these days to what vB think should be the end of life.
Anyway, that's not your fault.:)

I search for translate, in the title, Downloads to spanish, but I don't view what vbphare or waht templade I need edit.

It shouldn't, but sometimes a mod will reveal layout problems in your HTML that wouldn't have shown up otherwise. Try running it through the validator: http://validator.w3.org

Here is a little tweak that replaces the upload and download text with icons within the postbit. You can see the number of uploads or downloads when you mouse over the icon. I credit post 3394 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1754361&postcount=3394) for the if statements so they only show when there is an upload or download.

Upload the attached icon files to your images/misc directory and replace everything in your downloads_memberinfo_postbit template with the following code.

I am having a problem, after last time we imported the database from vb3.8 cause vb4 wasnt working really well for us. But now when i upload or want to download a file in the download section. It says ERROR: File not found While it does vieuw like it uploads it, when its redirected. I get the page as usual, when i click download i get : ERROR: File not found

How can i fix this, i never had this prob before. And for now i dont know a solution, or would a reinstall help? All is setup as it should. Linked files do download. But no files that where uploaded or what i am trying to upload.

It should be ok for FTP. When it contains "ftp://", no "http://" is added.

Guests can only upload if you give them those usergroup permissions.

Mass actions are possible, just use manage files.

Getting this: Your server is running safe mode. You MUST manually create a folder named dl_tmp under your downloads folder. Be sure to change the permissions to 777. Made the new folder and changed the permissions, but it still shows the same thing. Any idea how to fix?

Paths outside the vB folder aren't supported at the moment.

1. Yes, you can do this with Manage Files (though not in 1 move, unless you change the "files per page" setting to a very high one). And when you delete categories it is asked to you to move the files (or to delete them).

2. Click the "Update Counters" button in Manage Files to fix it.

Excellent suggestion, I think that could be the problem. I checked the php info through the vB Maint/View php info and did not find any mention of imagecreatefromjpeg

That's easy. First check which OS your server is running.
If it's a RedHat or Centos, the following command will be enough, executed as root:
yum install gd

If you are running Debian or Ubuntu, check your php version with php -v first. If you are running php5 you can use:
apt-get install php5-gd

Yes it is. So don't do a "yum install php-gd" because Centos won't understand this.
In Centos 5 it's just as I said.

This is not correct for Centos. The up2date php-gd is for RedHat. And Centos is Redhat based, but Centos does not work with up2date but with yum, so just do what I said and you will be fine.:)

It's easyer then you think. Just answer the questions to yourself and take the appropriate action:

1.) Are you using a control panel on your server. On most servers this can be either Cpanel, Directadmin or Plesk. Others are also possible, but not that much used as these 3.
a.) if the answer is yes, you probably don't want to use the yum install command, so goto b.)
If the answer is no, goto 2.)
b.) If you are using Cpanel, you have to let Cpanel compile your GD. If you don't know how this works, ask professional support.
Same goes for Directadmin and Plesk.

2.) Use the yum install php-gd command I gave you.
if that command does not work, use the yum install gd command I gave earlier.

3.) /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart
or
/sbin/service httpd restart

I'm going to sleep now, it's 04.12 AM over here, if you want me to fix it for you, I would be glad to help you. Send me a pm and I fix it for you tomorrow afternoon.

It's hardcoded in downloads.php itself. v6 has a better system with stars.

You can also edit your php.ini (if you have the ability/permission to do that, shared hosts mostly don't have it). It's the same two lines, but without the php_value prefix.

If it still won't work, the best thing to do is to contact the support of your hosting company.

Normally they should. Though the rules add-on isn't an official one.

Search for "actionhash" in downloads.php and the product XML for the CSRF changes, which are the biggest deal. I suggest you to use a diff compare tool (like WinMerge), so you can compare the code of both versions easily.

Upload all files to their correct contents, overwriting the old ones.
The import the product and set "overwrite" to "yes". Then all will be upgraded fine and your settings will not be changed.

Ive set my default view to alphabetical which works on categories but not downloads. Is this normal or is it also suppose to sort downloads aswell?

I would prefer to sort them alphabetically so if the mod doesn't do it how can I force it?

I installed DownloadsII-5.1.2 and all looked good.

Then I put the following 2 lines in the .htaccess file

php_value post_max_size 30M

and I got this database error

I have opened my profiles to "Unregistered / Not Logged In", after preventing it for so long.

I would like to hide the "Downloads" from a member's profile for "Unregistered / Not Logged In" ONLY.

Is it possible to do that please? and have it show as normal to looged in users?

I'm a bit clueless about all of this so please bear with me. i followed the install instructions but now I'm stuck... I created a new forum for downloads which will mostly be download links to various other sites. I tweaked the permission to allow Administrators to upload and create new downloads etc but there is nothing anywhere I can see that allows this. I tried changing the address to the download forum to forum.mysite.com/downloads but that just leads you to a blank page.

Can anyone explain as if they were dealing with a 2 year old, exactly how to get this mod working. I just want a new forum on my site that will be used as a download area, I won't be uploading anything to my servers - the downloads will be streaming for other sites.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe it does, but it's not supported. There's integration with the vB 3.7+ new profile layout with tabs etc. I don't know how that vB 3.7+ code will behave on a 3.6 installation, but I would suggest you to upgrade your site to vB 3.8.
vBulletin 3.6 and 3.7 are end of life and don't receive any more security updates.

This is indeed one of the best MODS for VB. I just needed to put a small check, that is users should have uploaded at least one file before they can download. So I wrote a small (two liner) plugin, here's how to do it.


Go to Plugins & Products->Add New Plugin
Choose Products DownloadsII
Hook Location dl2_pre_download(DownloadsII)
Title DownloadsII: Upload before download
Code:

Plugin is Active Yes

And make sure you put up a notice or something for users to know that they can't download before uploading! :)

I have been using your mod for some time and works perfectly.
I have one question, cause I can't figure it out myself.

When someone reaches the downloads limit, a message appears saying:

"You had reached your daily downloads limit...etc."

And then he/she gets redirected to the file that he was downloading. I wonder if I can somehow modify the redirect thing, so members can be redirected to a specified forum or a specified link, and how to do it, cause I really don't know where to look for?

I tried to change some things in the downloads.php and failed. If you can tell me what to do to redirect users on other link, I would be much appreciated!

Please help, all of a sudden my downloads start opening in a new window, instead of being saved as a file. And they come out like this "s2ma��SGm????VV6o}......"

I have not put any extensions under the settings to "open in window". I have also uploaded tons of files of the same format with no problem, until today, which is so strange cause I have not changed any settings! It still downloads fine with IE, but im getting this problem with firefox, and another fren with firefox has this problem too.

I have an issue during the installation.
When I upload the "product-downloads.xml" file in product manager the installation never ended.
I just find the menu "DownloadsII Options" in Vbulletin settings but I do not have new "Downloads" menu in my admincp.

My admincp is renamed for security reasons, could it be the reason of this installation issue?

Yes I have renamed the admincp before to upload the folder.

I just uninstall and I received following errors during uninstall process:
Invalid SQL:
ALTER TABLE `vb_user` DROP `uploads`;

Invalid SQL:
ALTER TABLE `vb_user` DROP `comments`;

It seems these fields have not been created during installation process...

Does this creation can be very long depending of the number of members?

Not really cause it's just creating a new, empty column. Only things like adding indexes to big tables can be slow (and DownloadsII isn't doing that).

I love this mod, it's absolutely crucial to my forums success. But I'm having some problems with incredibly high server load.

It is release day today for Football Manager 2011 so my site has had about 2000+ people online constantly.

With the Downloads II mod disabled the server load was about 19.5. After enabling it again the server load rocketed up to around 125-150 in under a minute!

Are there any quick tips to help me optimize the downloads script as I can't have it killing my server.

There are around 15,000 files downloaded a day. I have pruned the dl_downloads table as it had over 4.5 million rows so I assume this was taking a while to check for a users last download time.

i have this problem. i moved my server and i switched from apache to lighttpd. i transfered all the files to downloadsII incl the upload files. now i got a message when i want to download a file.......file cannot be found. for testing i upped a new file without any problems, but it is impossible to download the new files. can someone please tell me, what adjustments i have to do??

@X-or: You can remove them from within downloads II, you can see by the filedate which are the old files. However, if you got that much files it's a problem indeed. I can't help you any further. That's the limitation of Downloads II.

@Michael24179: Alle files by Downloads II are called something like 23421-filename.zip and then next one is called 23422-filename.zip so every filename has a number in front of it. That's the way to prevent unwanted file overwriting when users uploads files.
That's also X-or's problem, because the choice must be made to either allow overwriting by uploading users or preventing that so admin can sort it out himself.

So when you upload files, you need to put them in the same download directory again and with the same filename, for example 23422-filename.zip in order to have them found again after a server move.
If you don't know the filename anymore, when the error "file xxx can not be found" the xxx will give you the correct number. Put that in front of the file again and it will be found.
Yep I know, lot of work. But if you don't want that you have to backup the files in their original uploaded form so with the numbers in front of it in the filename.

I can help you both only so far, I'm no coder. This is the way it is, if you need other solutions you need to wait until RS Jelle has time to answer you, maybe he has some idea's.

That could be, in that case you could check your rewrite.
Also check if the download directory is chmod 777.
Check also your ec_tmp directory within your downloads directory that it's chmod 777.

If you can upload a file, but can't download it, you have a rights problem. I'm not familiar with Lighttpd, but it could also be the owner of the files/directory's is different.
Problems should be over though if directory's are put to 777.
The only exception to that is if you host is using SuPHP with Fastcgi, then they should both be 755.

I'm sorry, but with this question I'm starting to doubt if you even use Downloads II as administrator or are in any way familiar with it. How about choosing the file from your online download section and then on top choose for "delete"?

I can only compare the filedates of duplicate files in the ftp.
Like I said, I doubt you are using Downloads II like an administrator should. Login to your forums, go to your download section, choose a categorie, you can see all filedates there. Sorry but you should try some things before asking. This is too easy.
Same goes for sorting.... click on the name in the categorie you want things sorted by and you will see them sorted. Filename, date, whatever is displayed there. Then you can make a screenshot or write some things downl

The only serious thing I see here is that your download section is 7 GB and that sorting it out will be a lot of work.
However, every download section needs maintenance, if you only start now to have a look to sort it, you are way too late with it. So in fact this is not a support problem but purely a lack of maintenance problem.:)

But I hope with you that Jell can think of a way to fix this. It would be nice to have a search and sort thing under "manage files" in the download section. I second that.

You go wrong at step 3.
The file won't be replaced that way, only the title will be replaced!!. You should not edit and change. You should just upload the new file, then choose the old file and delete it.

In the download pages you don't see "junk v1.0" anymore, nor can you download it.
Well... you could download it if you knew the correct filename, like 11145-junk.zip because the way you use it, only description gets overwritten and new file will be uploaded, but old file won't be deleted.
An edit function is to edit things, not to replace files.:) I even wonder if you get a new filedate then on your new file.

So now I understand better what kind of problem that you have, and you caused it yourself by doing step 3 and 4 instread of just upload the new file.

With this explanation now I understand why you can't delete the files that way. Now I hope Jelle can fix you with a solution.
Otherwise maybe you can use the find function but for that you need SSH access on the server.

I think you mix up some things or don't understand the difference between editting, adding and replacing.;)

The old file is not replaced. The old file is still present in the system. The only thing that gets replaced is the title, because that's really a replacement.
The new file will be added too, and since the title is replaced, it will be shown in Downloads II at the place of the old file.
But the old file wil NOT get deleted so will still be in your downloads directory. That's the reason why you have your problem.

Replacing would mean that the file and describtion would be replaced completely (fysically and virtually, so on harddisk and in Downloads II). But that is not the case.

This will be converted to a clickable link and the only thing a user has to do is to click the "download" button.

You don't want to put direct download links in your forum, because that way everybody can download the files and discard any restrictions made in Downloads II. You wouldn't need something like Downloads II in that case.

Also, I just found a member that is bypassing my download restriction for non-supporting members. I have a limit of 3 downloads per day for free members; however, he figured out that he can change his IP address every 3 downloads, and go all day long. So, I banned him, but it shows a major deficiency to this software. I make restrictions based upon usergroups, with named users in them. Why is the download software restricting based upon a different variable that I cannot control? That is not a good thing.

How can I change this?

No unfortunately there isn't. I needed that too but as far as I know this feature will only be available in the vb4 version of Downloads II.

I don't think that the check is done against ip address, except if you allow downloads for guests because that's the only way to check guest downloads.

Check your guest settings. It might help to add some download amount (in kb) limitation to be sure that users can only download a max amount per day.

That's because of the default upload limit of PHP.

You need to create a file named .htaccess (note the period in front of the name). Put the following two lines into the file:

php_value upload_max_filesize 30M
php_value post_max_size 30M

Upload the file into your forum directory (the same location where downloads.php is located.)

This will increase the size of the file you can upload to 30MB.

Hmmm I have an .htaccess file already. However it in a directory up from where the downloads.php is located. :(

For instant my .htaccess file is located within /www
and the downloads.php file is located within /www/forums

That doesn't matter. You should have the .htaccess mentioned by RSJelle in your webroot diretory.
So in your case that would be your /www directory.
If you already have a .htaccess file in there, add the 2 lines RSJelle gave you.
