This seems to be the most popular mod with 3.8....so im sure many are using it that way.

Torrents aren't illegal. Using torrents to copy and redistribute copyrighted material that isn't yours is illegal. Just like downloads.com is not illegal, as long as the content your providing for download is yours to redistribute, or already distributed under the GNU licence.

This isn't any different then an articles section. A million other sites already do articles, but likely your articles have something to do with your site topic. Likewise most peoples downloads have something to do with their site topic. I run a site that's predominately about the Yu-Gi-Oh! Did I say they were using it for only Yu-Gi-Oh? No, I was siting my site as an example of how my downloads are specific to my forums subject matter. Just like they are on other people's sites. You stated you didn't see why this was so popular when a million other sites were also hosting the same downloads. I was pointing out that we're not all hosting the exact same material. We're using the downloads section for items we think our users would be interested in.

I'm not sure what you mean by this mod came out of nowhere. Perhaps it did become popular fast, but it was first released July of 2006.

I can only talk for myself, but DownloadsII has been the biggest "crowd-puller" on our forums. We have many files hosted and we don't allow guests to download the files. Almost every new registered member is using the Downloads right after registering. :D


Oh and we don't have illegal files in our system like torrent sites have. Most of the tools/addons are made by our forum members. :)

Why would this be such a "crowd-puller" that brought in people to your forums just because of tools/addons made by your members ? If that was the case, you could of just linked them with vBulletin the way it was...without needing this plugin.

I find it hard to believe...members would come flooding in just for that. Something you've probably had around for years.

When I import files from another folder on the same webspace I get what seems to be a timeout, the files I am importing are usually 1GB+ any way I can sort this, it works fine for the smaller files.

I love the mod and would like to use it just need to conquer this little hurdle.

OK, I admit defeat here, I have tried tirelessly for almost a week to read through this entire threads 200++ posts for an answer to my problem.

The problem I am having is the dreaded security token issue.

I am on vB 3.7.x and have DownloadII 5.1.0 installed (uploaded in ascii mode)

Here are some of the fixes I have tried (sorry if they are not specific I dont feel like researching for the post numbers, that and I'm not a coder at all)

1. The php mod to disable the security token (true changed to false) - Result: stopped showing the security token message but had the same result of nothing uploading

2. Tried to add an htaccess file to the forum root to raise upload limit - Result: killed my forums and had to remove the file

3. Tried the template changes for the download_file and download_file addit and added the lines - Result: No changes, still get security token messages

4. Tried to find info on what I would need to to make a php.ini file (I have no idea what code goes into this file) - Result: N/A I would need specific info on what code to put into a php file or someone to provide a php.ini file for me to use (Again, I'm not a coder, sorry)

Looked through vB.org and vB.com about the issue andthe only other info I have seen simply suggests I reupload all non-image files for vB and reinstall vB all together.

I'm sorry if I have missed some crucial info to fix this problem but I am ready to give up and look for another mod, which isnt what i want to do seeing as how popular this mod is and the chances for support are very high.

I hope the info I have provided is enough to give more info or provide some help, pm me or post here if more info is required. If one of the coders/author for this mod would need/want to work on the site/mod directly I would appreciate it and can provide the info for that.

Edit - After writing this I tried to upload a small file (4k) and everything worked, but the file I had been using to test was @10megs which leads me to assume something else is the problem. I have double checked my vB settings and other permissions etc to ensure the filesize limits are set high enough. So my only logical guess would be that I need the htaccess file to work without breaking my site? Any help?

A directory is just a folder on your server. Double check to make sure a folder named downloads exists on your server where it's supposed to be.

Does this allow the downloads to be stored in a file on the server so that only members can access them only and not be directly linked to... I currently am having a problem with members copying and pasting the links to my downloads and distributing them which circumvents what we are trying to do which is to drive up membership and participation...

Yep that seems to work guess I'll have to test drive this on my alt forum before we go live... This should solve the problem... I spend hours building PDF's just to find out I have to change the links because someone decides to steal the link and take it off the site...

Ok the .htaccess you say to use breaks my site 100% no matter where in the server )I put it in the default area and in every major folder trying to find one it would work in and the file gives this error.

Just a question. I can set that DownloadsII is only working for certain usergroups, thats fine. But the Link that is in the Navbar shows up anyways, if one would be as non-registered for example not be able to use the Download System. Could the link in a Navbar not that way that it would actually only show usergroup dependent ?

then just after your link to your downloads section add </else></if>

this should allow you to only allow certain usergroups to see that link, alternatively replace the 'usergroup' with 'member' (removeing the 1,5,7) which will show to all registered members only.

I'm running VB 3.7.4 PL1 and have successfully upgraded to the 5.1.0 version from 5.0.8 without a hitch....I just over-wrote all files and imported the product allowing overwrite, didn't lose anything. ;)

if i remember rightly this doesn't appear in your navbar template, instead its apart of a phrase....now...my memory is a bit hazey but i think the phrase you should look for is something like:

ec_downloads link, just type in ec_download and search phrases, you'll find what your looking for, replace the phrase with your edited link you made.

That product uses new templates in place of your existing smilies templates. You'd have to manually edit your downloads template's HTML to get the look you want.

That's because of the default upload limit of PHP.

You need to create a file named .htaccess (note the period in front of the name). Put the following two lines into the file:

php_value upload_max_filesize 30M
php_value post_max_size 30M

Upload the file into your forum directory (the same location where downloads.php is located.)

This will increase the size of the file you can upload to 30MB.

Doing this completely kills my forum access.

Edit:

Moved $template_hook[profile_left_last] to where I wanted and this moved the mixes tab. Not sure if this is good or bad to do.

Hey Jelle,

Been using this mod for ages now and almost reached the 1,000,000 downloads (not how many files there are lol). However, since a couple of days, I have encountered a problem. A Moderator of mine (is in a custom group called Trial Mods) can't add files any more. When he tries to add a file, he gets the following message:

"Maximum Upload Limit would be Exceeded by this file. Try a smaller file."

It was working before for him. I tested it out by using a normal members account but for a regular account, it works normally. Same goes for me, the administrator. Are you familiar with this problem and do you know how to fix it? I haven't made any changes whatsoever and I just upgraded to the latest version but still the same problem.

I hope you have an answer to this problem.

Subsequent investigations found these files in the DownloadsII folder. see attached

Thanks for posting that jimjam, that looks like some serious sabotage.

Members were signing up to my forum downloading stuff and then they were never to be seen again.

So I'm looking into adding another usergroup so members with less then 10 posts cant up or down files.

That's what I thought but the downloads tab could not be found like the other tabs. I already rearranged some other ones.

Edit:

Moved $template_hook[profile_left_last] to where I wanted and this moved the mixes tab. Not sure if this is good or bad to do.

I've changed the places for some hooks in my templates too, no problems at all. It's just your preferences - where do you want to display those additional informations.

The author should investigate this and I recommend not deny uploads for registred users.

What is weird is that I couldn?t find any link related to the Downloads in the Navbar template.

Same with other Mods in the Navbar, like the IRC Chat or the HelpCenter. I Just don?t find a link of that in the Navbar template, how can that be ?

Edit the downloads_navbar_button template under the Downloads Templates in your Style Manager.

Most likely the mods use the plugin system to add a template into the navbar and other places. Helps keep installations easy for the end user.

It's a problem with the MGC Chatbox Evo mod. You didn't installed/uninstalled that mod properly.

so they can share through them without limits.

only admiin and supmod can upload actual files.
rest is just shares.

think your issue qualifies for support, cause you need database changes
cant just change the file structure without updateing the db, suggest u take this
to This forum (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=111) cause it could get complicated and is a mess to clean up.

in these posts you will just get 100 different ways of solveing the issue..

I've tried using the code from the 'downloads_panel_side' template and also the 'adv_portal_ecdownloads' template but none of them work or show the info.

I installed on 3.7.0 and works great. But there is one problem : I upload large files ( 5 to 8 Mb ) easily but after the users download them the zip/rar files are corrupted !!
I checked the files via FTP ... the files on server have no problem!

Just copy over the downloads folder from the old url to the new url making sure they are in the same directory structure (chmod 777), then go to the Downloads section of the new url and click "Update Counters"! Question....I am running 3.8.1 version and I noticed a little problem with DownloadsII now.

Normally you can switch between Html & Text Code views when making/editing a post, as per the screenshot in the info of this thread.

Since the update, I am stuck in Text Code view and the Editor Mode button is no longer there :(

I still cant get the WYSIWYG editor to show when posting/editing a file. How do I get that back? Is it an option that I am missing that I may have it disabled? I found what causing this problem... its mod [AJAX] vB Post Templates 1.5.0 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=199869) and users who have premade posts cant see description box,other users don't have problem

1) To set the download file Date to auto-update itself when a file has been uploaded/updated. Right now, it sticks to the date it was 1st uploaded.

2) To be able to add in additional fields in the download file description, such as "Version:", as well as maybe a section that auto-archives previous version of files with their version number. Now THAT would be super handy.

i installed as you said but after installing i gave usergroup permissions and saved them but after saving i got another usergroup with same name and the options i edited in this havent saved

example: i edited for moderators and save them but after saving i got another usergroup named moderators in custom usergroups and the modifications havent saved in the orginall usergroup

I'm experiencing a couple of problems but perhaps they are just suggestions for future versions, I've been adding links in the description area to related web pages and files and it works fine when viewing the download details but I really need these links to appear on the category pages as well, currently I only see text. I tried using the information from this post 940 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1149741&postcount=940) and using html but it didn't work.

I also agree with the suggestions quoted below, version numbers and dates updated are very important to my situation and perhaps these other ones are possible but i tried searching.

Would be nice if clicking the thumbnail in category view opened a full-size shot instead of DLing the file.

Definitely could use a "new" option which creates a formatted list much like the sub-section lists. I see you can sort by date within the sub-sections, but showing new files starting with the letter "R" isn't much help. ie: I have a subcategory named Tables, then subcategories of A, B, C...etc., I guess what i'd like is a way to show and sort All files within a Category or subcategory, hope that makes sense.

I finally got it to work but the .htaccess file did not solve the problem. Thanks to blind-eddie for pointing me to the php.ini file.

I added the red code to my php.ini file and now all is well with the uploads:

For those of you that are interested (since I didn't find it here anywhere) in modifying the postbit a bit more than just showing number of uploads and downloads, here's a snippet of code that will only show those if the user has uploaded or downloaded something, and if they have upped something, then it will provide a link to their uploaded files.

This needs to go into downloads_memberinfo_postbit in your templates:

Yeah, I suppose I should have made clear that this info was going to change what is displayed in the user info space on a post (aka the postbit). The link goes to the downloads tab on the poster's profile page.

Having said THAT, it wouldn't be hard to mod the statistics page to show the same info, I just don't need that as I figure if you're already in a profile page, you can click on the downloads tab pretty easily.

This is caused by another vB mod you installed. Line 2359 of /includes/adminfunctions_template.php is a plugin hook location.

It is totally stable. vBulletin 3.8 isn't that different from 3.7 or 3.6.
The upload problems, which is the most common "bug", is a server configuration problem.

Just wanted to suggest another option (original post 3390 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1748637&postcount=3390)) for possible future improvement consideration.

All of my downloads will have images assigned to the file (screen shots) and I'm afraid when this goes live that users won't realize that a additional step is required to add an image. I think it would save time and confusion if the image could be uploaded on the Add Files page along with the file.

Ok fixed that i just uploaded the downloads.php through my cpannel rather than using my ftp client then the page loads tidy but i get a message saying The download directory does not exist! at the top of my downloads page but i see the file i added as a test any ideas

I need a bit of clarification.

1.) I want to ftp a group of files into the directory for downloads. Then I obviously want them to show in the download section. I cannot see a concise method to do that.

2.) I had an issue today that I cannot seem to find an explanation for. I do allow files for our members with the extension of .exe If the file name is CoDWaW-1.2-1.3-PatchSetup it does not show the file to be downloaded with the correct name. If I rename it to say c153.exe it works fine. Is this caused by the length of the file name?

We are online gamers that share map files and such and it is far better for us to upload them via ftp to be available for members than to try to direct upload in the forum. I have seen a number of posts stating to recount. Recount what and how exactly? I am a bit new to the methods of Vb so a bit of direction would be most helpful. :)

1.) You can do that by uploading the files and after that, linking to them when adding them with Downloads II. However... you have to put in the correct link and the correct filesizes yourself manually. There is no other way.

2.) For your 2nd question I'm not sure. Is the name CoDWaW-1.2.-1.3-PatchSetup or CoDWaW-1.2.-1.3-PatchSetup.exe? In the first case the extension is too long I guess.
It is possible to use longer filenames, but I think there will be a limit to the length.

Hello! have some questions about this mod.

Is it possible toset a limit per usergroup? I mean that certain groups can download files than others in a daily basis.

Is it possible to add a screenshot, specially if the files are wallpapers?

Is it possible to add multiple files for different wallpapers sizes?

And, how are files organized? Can i organize them by categories and subcategories? Each one with a different folder or subfolder inside a downloads roon folder.

This might be the biggest doubts I have at the moment, thanks. :D

Hi, hope someone or the Author can help I have been using this fine for some months now and not one single problem small files and large files, however over the last few days my members are having problems downloading the large files, it seems it will pause for anything upto four minutes after they press the download button. After the wait it goes through the normal routine and starts downloading.

As i said smaller files are fine but the large ones that once downlaoded fine are taking ages to get the save as windows box, any ideas please?
Note i'm running 3.7 vb patch 1 and the 5.0.8 downloads II

Can someone a little smarter than me help troubleshoot what's needed to get large files to upload without a security token error?

Reasonable size files ~ 10MB have no problem.

When a 30MB file is tried the vB security token error appears.

This stinks of a php limit but I can't figure out which one.

Uploads on, file sizes are set to 50MB, and memory size to 128MB.

Any thoughts on why large files are a problem?

Any other values you would recommend increasing from a php.ini file?

When you uploaded to the forum root did the upload size limits go up as reported by the admincp stats when you login?

I don't have have access to test a theory until tonight, but are your attachments stored in the database or in the filesystem? I'm going to change the site over to stored in the filesystem to see if that fixes the problem. If you are the same way and want to try it out let us know how it goes, thanks!

With big files I think it's just easier to upload them to your server via FTP program and then link them. :)

Getting files to upload through the "front door"... the download page (http://www.pc101.com/forum/downloads.php)... seems the most logical and user friendly way. Why have an "Add" button if you really can't add files that way? Also, I want my staff to help build my Download's data base but don't want them to have FTP access! Eeek! :eek:

The past couple of weeks, I've experienced a problem with this mod. I've asked for help twice but till now, no assistance received yet. In the meantime, I added another problem to my list. Is there anyone who can assist me with these problems because it seems like the system has gone from running perfect to almost not running at all lol.

#1: A staffmember, who is in a custom usergroup called "Trial Mods", can't upload any files. When he adds the file and hits the submit button, he gets the following error:
"Maximum Upload Limit would be Exceeded by this file. Try a smaller file."
It just suddenly appeared. He was always able to add files but not any more. I don't have this problem and neither do registered members (tested it out myself with a testaccount).

#2: Received a couple of e-mails and PMs from members who get the following error when adding a file:
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in [path]/includes/functions.php(5721) : eval()'d code on line 10

Okay...I will start by admitting right off that I am not very savvy on working in my server directory.

I uploaded the "upload" folder to /public_html/forum/ on my server.

I installed the product in the Admin for downloads.xml

I changed permissions on the download folder to 777 on my server

But, there is nothing working. Nothing has changed on my vbulletin.

What easy step ( i know it is - ill just hit myself in the forehead now) am I missing?

1. Click the "Update Counters" link at your downloads section. The left side statistics are being cached.

2. This isn't possible at the moment, but probably in the future it will.

1. Did you check the usergroup permissions? The "error" is caused by an upload limit you can set on a per usergroup basis.

2. Line 5721 of /includes/functions.php is the global_complete hook, but DownloadsII isn't using this plugin location. So the PHP warning is caused by another mod.

You will get the security token error when an upload is timing out, which is caused by a PHP server setting. Have a look at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1681723&postcount=3 (the vB attachment system will give you the same problem with large files).

I have no idea :)
As its name says, the global_complete hook is being used a lot. You can sort plugins on their hook location at the plugin manager. Then find out which of them are using a foreach() function in their PHP code.

I will contact vBSEO that there is a problem when using it. Truly a shame and hopefully, they will be able to find a fix for it because it's such a good mod. It just shows the url with the downloadtitle in it.

You are using Internet Explorer?

Tools -> Internet Options? -> Advanced -> Disable Script Debugging

Is this disable option enabled? It's enabled by default normally.

I uploaded the "upload" folder to /public_html/forum/ on my server.

I installed the product in the Admin for downloads.xml

I changed permissions on the download folder to 777 on my server

But, there is nothing working. Nothing has changed on my vbulletin.

What easy step ( i know it is - ill just hit myself in the forehead now) am I missing?

I have tried this several times, even uploaded all the files using cpanel. Could it have something to do with the fact that I have renamed the admin cp. I changed it from its original location?

Did you check the usergroup permissions? The "error" is caused by an upload limit you can set on a per usergroup basis.

He was in two custom usergroups, both with a max file size limit of 100MB. But he only adds files of 1-5 MB. I set it for both usergroups to -1 and he can add files again. But it's still a weird situation. How can it be that I choose for 100MB but he isn't able to add a file of 1MB?

Yes, using IE. I dont have the box showing to me when it happens, but I did notice it each time I edit a file. Is there something wrong with the code that gives that error?

As I said, disable script debugging. I don't think it's coming from DownloadsII itself on the edit page, but from the WYSIWYG-editor. There are only a very few lines DownloadsII JavaScript (and they are mainly copied over from other vB parts, like the AJAX name suggestion).

Is there any why to get the highslide mod I have installed to work with the thumbnails in it?

You are understanding the permission setting wrong :D

"This is the maximum MB that a user can upload. Set this to -1 for there to be NO limit."

This is the maximum amount of ALL files a user can upload. It's not on a per upload basis.

Did you update your forum url settings ("vBulletin Options" -> "Site Name / URL / Contact Details")? If you run the Update Counters, DownloadsII will reload everything with the current forum url setting.

Strange, as I'm using sql_prepare which should take care of adding quotes to the value.
You're the first having problems with it :erm:

Try this: open downloads.php and find

FWIW this is not an issue that seems fixable by increasing upload limits from a .htaccess or php.ini file. I can increase the limits far past a 30MB test file and can not get a 30MB test file uploaded. For example setting the limits to 100MB does not fix being able to upload a 30MB file. Any other ideas?

One thing, has anyone come up with a "template" option, where one could copy an existing sub-category and place it under a different main category? I have to create 6 subcategories that are essentially the same, and place them under a couple dozen categories.

I run a game website, and we have guys who like to make small mods to make the games more interesting. Naturally, keeping up with these mod files is a big job. I love Downloads II, it will really make my life easier and my users are really getting into stocking the file bank.

Now, another question: I searched this thread but the key word is edit, so that didn't do much for my search. When I go to edit a file, I click the Edit button. I can make whatever changes are necessary--cool! How do I "submit" my edit? Is there supposed to be a submit button? I have been getting by with hitting ENTER on the keyboard, but that seems odd.

This is really an AWESOME mod, it reminds me of the good old time BBSing with ami-express..
Ofocurse I downloaded it and thanking you for this work.
But, one question comes to mind, is it possible to have the download dir hosted on a different server? So that I can set it up by giving ftp username and pw and have the files located somewhere else? This because I have my board running on a decent hosting provider, but speed always has a price, and in my case is space.
So it would be great keeping the board on a fast server, with fast SQL queries and so on, while leaving the mere job of uploading/downloading files to a cheaper provider that gives you plenty space and bandwidth without any other special requirements.

Depending on the user group, the admin can set different ratios.. so user has to upload 100kb to download 300 for example..

I created it for someone who wanted more images per row. There's a $countnumber variable in it to control the amount.
Here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=65098) you can find a screenshot of how the modified version looks like (without the numbers in front of the image, that was a debugging thing).



That's currently hardcoded in downloads.php. Open it and have a search for $dlinks. It's pretty easy to edit yourself (even without knowing PHP).

I need some advice. First, DownloadsII is an excellent mod. No doubt about it. Been using it for perhaps a year without incident, problem, or frustration.

Backgound: Just updated to vB 3.8.1 PL1, and DownloadsII 5.1.0.

Situation: The vB board is a subscription service and "unregistered subscribers" are allowed but their access is quite limited. There are a number of downloads accessible to paid subscribers and they getting them without any problem. There is one forum that offers "free downloads" to "registered guests" (meaning unpaid) and that is all they are supposed have access to.

I belive that before the upgrades/updates everying was working OK in terms of the paid people were permitted to download everything -- while the unpaid ones (registered guests) had access to only two files in a separate forum. But, and importantly, I have responsibility for keeping the vB running with others have access with administrator privileges (not a good thing but an unfortunate fact of life).

Right now, I can not limit the "registered guests" to downloading just those two files set aside in a separate forum. Access to only those files is what they should have -- no downloads in other forums and no attachment downloads. I have tried all combinations of rights for downloading attachments and/or persmissions to downloading files (in the DownloadsII section of the user group permissions) but can not get it set as needed.

I also humbly admit that I am at the point of not being able to see for forest for the trees.

If you are willing to help lead this poor soul out of the gloom of darkness I would be glad to (privately) provide you your own administrator UN and PW. My bet is I am doing something really stoooopid!

I think I discovered a bug with the renaming of certain files, I have the Rename Files option turned off and searched this thread, found this (#3410 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1761166&postcount=3410)):
2.) I had an issue today that I cannot seem to find an explanation for. I do allow files for our members with the extension of .exe If the file name is CoDWaW-1.2-1.3-PatchSetup it does not show the file to be downloaded with the correct name. If I rename it to say c153.exe it works fine. Is this caused by the length of the file name?
2.) For your 2nd question I'm not sure. Is the name CoDWaW-1.2.-1.3-PatchSetup or CoDWaW-1.2.-1.3-PatchSetup.exe? In the first case the extension is too long I guess.
It is possible to use longer filenames, but I think there will be a limit to the length.I imported a bunch of files that begin with "16-9" and when they are downloaded the files are renamed without the "16-", ie: a file in the downloads folder was imported properly as 82502-16-9 Black Knight.zip (real file name is 16-9 Black Knight.zip) and gets downloaded as 9 Black Knight.zip.

I think the referenced post above is due to having a "-" in the file name and not related to the length of the file name, all of the other downloads imported without a "-" work fine. I was wondering if this could be a server setting and if it can be fixed?

Just edit the downloads_cat_filebit template and put the above code right before the file name link
<a href="downloads.php?do=file&amp;id={$file['id']}">{$file['name']}</a>.

You can also use the above code to put the rating stars in the file details page, replacing the A+ to F grades. The template to edit for this is downloads_file .

You can tweak the numbers in the codes to anything you want. Just remember the rating is between 5 and 10, and unrated files have 0 as default value.
