Post Thank You Hack

Note - The mod author has been unreachable for some time, but the vbulletin.org community has stepped up to provide a number of individual fixes over the years. ForceHSS, Hippy, and Seven Skins have all combined many of these fixes into product files.

ALL CREDIT STILL GOES TO ABE1 And this is still 'his' mod. Please still mark the mod as installed if you use any version of it.

That said so you don't need to apply a dozen + small fixes yourself you should consider downloading one of the updated packages below:

- Original File Specs: post_thanks_7_82.zip (26.4 KB, 24844 downloads) - Original file removed, replaced with patched files including search fix (some admins noticed hackers attempting to use outdated code to exploit search in attempt to gain administrator password or similar).
- There are five total patched versions available, some with and without the search fix - I've replaced the main file with the patched versions... please be sure to download and install the correct version, the main mod post contains links to additional information and patched files!
- If Abe1 returns he can request these packages be removed.


About this hack:
One of the biggest problems on forums as you may know is 'posts boosting'. There are users who LOVE to say 'thanks' when ever they can. How can it hurt? Their post count goes up, they have nothing to loose.

There are also users who really like to express their thanks to post but don't like posting a post that looks like they're post boosting.

Then comes the moderators who have to delete people's thanks yous so a thread can look readable with out the thanks yous thrown around.

Finally comes the posters of these useful posts. They have no idea how many people really likes their posts if only some people say 'thanks'.

What this hack does is fix ALL these problems - except those users who like post boosting. This places a button called 'thanks.' When a user clicks on it, it places his username in a box right under the post saying that so-and-so says 'thanks' for the post. Every-one who clicks is placed in one box.

By giving your users the extra feature, you forum will look allot nice and organized. It is a guaranteed liking by ALL the members of your forum.

A few things to note:

1) If you did not upgrade to 4.0 and want to save your thanx when upgrading; disable, but NOT uninstall the post thanx before upgrading to 4.0. Once you upgrade to 4.0 upgrade post thanx hack how you would normally upgrade a hack. It should automatically re-enable post thanx hack.

2) No searching feature yet

3) No legacy version of the box with thanx. If you have legacy enabled on your site, you will get the same box as non-legacy users.

4) If you want to move the Thanx button to near the edit post button,
open template postbit
find

and move it under
<span class="postcontrols">

Damnz... first Jelle releases the DownloadsII mod and now you with the Thank You mod. The two most used features on my forum!

Fantastic job Abe, really appreciate your hard work and for converting the mod to vB4 in such a short period of time. I will upgrade this mod when I get home, hopefully everything will go fine.

One question though; You say there isn't a legacy version. With this you mean the postbit_legacy template? If so, will there be in the near future? Or is there perhaps a manual workaround?

Hello, first thanks for the update.

I have a problem with the post thanks plugin.

I updated it from the last version 3.x and after I enable the plugin the server start with a high load average and forum doesnt load.

I disable all plugins/ blog and /cms and only enable the post thanks, the home page load fine but when I want to see the post there is only a blank page.

How can I check the error, I checked the error.log from the apache but there is nothing.

I installed per directions (like other plugins) and the thank you button doesnt show... I am using default skin so there is no reason why it shouldnt. I see the code in the template but the button doesnt appear.

When I try to uninstall (because my tempate is now messy) I get this

It is text with an image next to it. As you hover over the colour will change.

This looks like you are uninstalling. and that it does not have that table. Try reinstalling then uninstall.

I added the separator in the last minute. I didn't have a chance to fully test it. I will look into it.

I upgraded my board from 3.8.4 PL1 to 4.0.0 PL1. I had the mod install before but uninstalled all my mods at one point. When I install this it will not show in the postbit or postbit legacy. It will show the stats on the members profiles but not in the postbit.

Very weird. This would have happened back in one of the vb versions when they first came out with the template hooks. I had them fix it and everyone would have this problem if it still existed. Do you have any edited php files?

I used to offer free support to install on your web site. If you want me to install on your site now, and make sure you have a 100% working hack, it will cost $50. They both move since they are both using that plugin. You can change the order that the plug-in execute though and get the thanx button to the left of the blog button. The plug-in name it something like postbit_complete.

Thanks for the update. I did the template edit in the postbit to move it by the edit button however it is still at the default location instead of being by the edit button.

They both move since they are both using that plugin. You can change the order that the plug-in execute though and get the thanx button to the left of the blog button. The plug-in name it something like postbit_complete.

I did the template edit to pull it over by the edit post but I do not want to figure out how to put blod button back are you working on a fix for this minor thing? If not how would I go about getting the thanks button and blog button back on the left agian like it is default?

There is no need to refresh when I hit thanks it shows I did almost immediately. I hated that refresh/load page in 3.8.

I have just a small issue, i use my forum with a style i downloaded from the Styles section here and in the postbit legacy the number of thanks is not aligned with the word "Thanks".

Perhaps you could try creating a new database table, import your old 3.x.x backup, then download/backup the individual "thank you" tables, then import them into the vb 4.x database. This is how I would try doing it but I have not done this before but it is the only solution that I can think of if you don't want to lose your weeks worth of posts.

Yes, it is very simple. Install the new version of post thanx hack. remove the post_thanks table from your database an replace it with the one from a backup. Run the re-counters in the ACP.

We use this hack a little differently on our forums. I had converted the phrases to AGREE (for post thanks) and DISAGREE (for post groan).

This allowed other members of the forums to agree or disagree on a topic without actually cluttering the forums with short posts.

Worked very well.

I would install and support this hack, once the other half is available. :D

Hi Vulture that didn't work for me.. I even went into my SQL and deleted the post_thanks (I made a backup first of course, lol) but that gave me the same issue I've also looked through the DB and can't find post_thanks_user_amount so don't know why I'm getting this error..

[EDIT] Was looking in the wrong place.. I removed the two issues and imported fine..

Yes, it is very simple. Install the new version of post thanx hack. remove the post_thanks table from your database an replace it with the one from a backup. Run the re-counters in the ACP.

I don't see user names anywhere. How do I export those 3 fields and import them into my other database? I have already successfully added the post_thanks table but I'm still getting all zero's for the counts.

Found each individual user. It would be too much work to change the counts manually. I want each person to retain their count and I want the threads to reflect who gave "thanks" as it did before I upgraded.

Have you uninstalled the old version? If you have, then you should be able to install as per normal but you won't have your old thanks

If you haven't then its steps 2 & 3 above

Same Problem as others here. Interestingly enough this product was abandoned as supported the minute it was released. Because all bugs are user created, and have nothing to do with the product itself. Although im not sure how i could have created this bug since all i did was install the product as instructed. (shrug) Still one of my favorite hacks to bad it doesnt work all that great in 4.0

It worked! I had to rerun the Recounters twice (the first time only the number of thanks given by users was updated). On the second go-round, all stats came back up. Also, the posts are annotated again as to who gave thanks. :up:

hey there... i just update my test forum(vb4) to the latest version and i get db errors.so i disabled it...

Postbit Legacy once button clicked IE7 users see blank posts, had to disable hack.

I tried to manually add a Post Thanks Search to a Member's Profile page as following:

<li><a href="post_thanks.php?{vb:raw session.sessionurl}do=findthanks&amp;userid={vb:raw userinfo.userid}">Find all Thanked Posts</a></li>

I believe your findthanks and find_user_thanks functions within post_thanks.php are not properly functioning as it returns a dB error for the search function.

Seems there is an issue with IE7 and this mod it works fine with IE8 and FireFox but once thanks is used you just get a blank white post in IE7 and help ??

Because of the issue I'm having I had to disable this mod on my site... I hope you do fix it but to be honest If it's not working I can't use it and you can't ask people to nominate it for the mod of the month if it doesn't work.. how it works on a select view other peoples boards is a mystery to me because I haven't done anything but install it.. and I haven't been getting support either on this

I've also had to disable this hack because of blank pages in IE after a thanks is given. (Problem only seems to be to not logged in users viewing a page after a thanks is given.)

Are you using friendly URLs or standard vB URLs?

FYI - This Mod -> https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=230901 conflicts with the Post Thanks Mod.

I couldn't get anything to show up with this one until I disabled it. No big deal...I wanted this one more...but thought I'd share if other's were struggling with getting the Post Thanks to work.
try removing

$template_hook['memberaction_dropdown_items'] = "";

from his plug_in for postbit_display_complete

It could depend on which ore you installed the hacks in.
