What does it do?

Features include global settings, advertisements allowing template conditionals, ad sharing and ad revenue sharing, timed advertisements, preset popular ad locations and functions such as sponsors, additional custom ad locations, random and static advertisements and its all very easy to use. You can use it for ordinary ads like adsense, banner rotations, or any content at all as well as using it to manage ads outside your forum too.

If you are using autoinsertion and were using vB Ad Management before version 4.00, you will need to remove your old template edits or advertisements will appear multiple times. Just reverse the old instructions below.


* Find <!-- post $post[postid] popup menu --> and paste $postbit_advertisement above it in your postbit & postbit_legacy templates.
* Paste $forumbit_advertisement at the bottom of your forumhome_forumbit_level1_post and forumhome_forumbit_level2_post templates.
* Paste $threadbit_advertisement at the bottom of your threadbit template.
* Paste $footer_advertisement at the top of your footer template.
* Find $spacer_close in your footer template and below it paste $rightcolumn_advertisement.
* Find &nbsp; in your header template and replace it with $header_advertisement.
* Find $spacer_open in your header template and below it paste $leftcolumn_advertisement.

I haven't tested it on 3.5, but it should work fine. Only one way to find out. :) Let me know if it does work and I'll post it in the 3.5 section too.

Only downsides I see are 1) it doesn't use ajax so when quick replying the user will have to hit refresh to see the advertisement and 2) You can only add one advert.

It would be nice to be able to chose from different advertisements or simply have an x number of adverts you can add, say 10, and then have it chose a random advertisement to insert.

Overall it looks great and has a lot of options :)

1) That hadn't occurred to me, I'll look into fixing that as soon as I work out how. Having said that, aside from not feeling "quite right" there's no pressing reason why an ad needs to be AJAXed with QR so I might leave it as it is.
2) It was really geared around something like Adsense where rotation is handled remotely but I'm open to allowing more in the future.

Yes, I'm seeing a pattern emerging here!

My intention is to expand the existing functionality to other areas of the forum outside the postbit in the next version - navbar, footer, threadbit, forumbit - plus a couple of minor extra features.

Then in the version after that I will have a look at rotations. :)

Just for people's notice, it's against google's policy to have adsense look like a post.

That has been debated elsewhere here if you search and some people have gotten written permission from Google to do that. Whether or not they had the Premium Adsense account I don't know.

Google's TOS states you shouldn't disguise your advertisements as content, which is not the same as giving them the same appearance as a post. They're very clearly labelled as advertisments in the code and not at all disguised as content, just stylised. Besides which I deliberately left out all the other paraphenalia (fake IP icon, report post, date/time etc) to remove ambiguity.

At any rate, just as it says when you're configuring that option in the mod you shouldn't enable that option unless you're sure it doesn't break TOS. It's up to the individual to ensure it doesn't, especially since it may be used for programmes other than Adsense.

No, just styled. You enter an optional avatar via the Ad Management CP and the "username" is just the title of your board.

You are not violating Google Adsense rules for making it look like a post (unless you select that option), but you may get introuble for having "Sponsored Links" in the title. This is from the Google FAQ:

Can I recommend referral products to my users?

Sure - you're welcome to endorse or recommend the products you're referring on your site. However, our program policies don't permit you to encourage clicks on or draw unnatural attention to the referral units you're displaying on your site.

More specifically, it's acceptable to use language such as "I use AdSense and recommend it to monetize your website." However, please avoid using language such as "Click here," "Visit these links to support our site," or other similar language.

And this is directly from the rules:

Incentives
Web pages may not include incentives of any kind for users to click on ads. This includes encouraging users to click on the ads or to visit the advertisers' sites as well as drawing any undue attention to the ads. For example, your site cannot contain phrases such as "click here," "support us," "visit these links," or other similar language that could apply to any ad, regardless of content. These activities are strictly prohibited in order to avoid potential inflation of advertiser costs.

I would suggest allowing people to type in their own words or leave it blank from the ACP. Just my thoughts!

That's not a feature of this mod at the moment. There are a few other mods out that might do what you want though. Search for banners.

This is really only meant to deal with Adsense-style advertiements at the moment.

It would seem that it's not compatible with 3.5.

I will release a 3.5 version of the next release, which is almost done. If you want to try to change it now, just replace all the examples in the code of executionorder="5" to "active=1" might do it. Otherwise, you'll have to wait I'm afraid.

It was tested in IE7, FF2.0 and Opera 9, worked fine in all of them. If there's a problem, I haven't seen it or heard about it.

Hm, I see. Can't think of a good workaround for that because all the ad placements are dynamic.

Version 2.0 of vB Ad Management has been released.

This version extends the advertising with posts functionality to other areas of the forum whilst also adding random banner rotation and other minor feature additions. See the thread on vBulletin.org for a full list.

This release contains optimisations to the code as well as feature updates so even if you just want to use the features present in version 1.0 I suggest that everyone upgrade to the latest version.

Yes i did - only Footer Ad is working all others are gone and Code is double checked. And it worked before at Postbits ...

If you put $header_advertisement in your navbar where you want the advertisement to go, it will work there too. :)

But if $header_advertisement is in the header then it does display on vBadvanced. It only stops in the navbar. I don't know why it would do that. :confused:

I'm afraid I know very little about vBAdvanced, perhaps who knows better than me can help you? It is because of this that I put adverts to go in the header, so they would work as much as possible. I can't support other software I'm afraid, sorry. :(

Could be because you have a heavily customised footer, I can't reproduce the problem on my default setup. I might need to take a look at your forum AdminCP myself, I'll get back to you tomorrow.

What is in the screenshot is the threadbit area. For ads to show in the postbit, you must post your code in the postbit code section and the below that check "Yes" where it asks if you want to enable adverts with posts. If you do not want adverts in the threadbit as in your screenshot, you must disable that section. If you do want threadbit adverts then you should double-check the code you have entered for it. The blank space would not show up if you had not entered code. If you're having problems getting what you want to show up, post the advertisement code here and I'll have a look.

Here's a bug... for the threadbit ad display, it adds the ad with the post icon block enabled, even if the forum has post icons disabled. My forum has all of the post icons disabled, so I'm unable to use that feature at the moment.

I hadn't thought of that! I'll release an updated version with a fix ASAP.

If you search out the threadbit_advertisement template you can remove the extra column yourself if you don't want to wait.

I get exactly the same problem, wierd thing is the footers doesnt show in the default style either and I haven't even changed any templates in their. So I have to keep Google Analytics tracking off for the footer to appear.

There are few settings per location simply because it would make both the settings and the code itself insanely complicated. If you have something specific you want to do, it's best to do it just by editing the template.

Try surrounding the entire footer/header_advertisement templates with:

REST OF TEMPLATE
</if>


where 5,6,7 is the IDs of the templates you want to exclude. If that doesn't work, try surrounding the $footer_advertisement value in the header/footer template with the code. Or finally failing that, try replacing $GLOBALS[forumid] with $forum[forumid] or $foruminfo[forumid].

Can't remember which will work, but one of them definitely will.

Correct. If you search the thread earlier someone did something very similar to have the banner show on vB CMPS. Both the header and footer banners will work anywhere.

It doesn't seem to want to display the google adsense script code when I put it in the box. It outputs the advertisement box, but the box is empty. If I put regular text in the box, it will output the regular text.

Grabbing someone else's code? Don't think so mate, not terribly ethical. I don't actually need to see anyone else's code to do that, but it's not something I have plans to do at this time. Sorry. I'd have to rewrite most of what I've done so far and half the attraction (I hope/think) is it's flexibility, I'd likely have to remove some of that to incorporate stats.

I am a programer as well and we all share and help eachother to make the best mods possible it has nothing to do with stealing and always give original coder credit. If you don't like the idea that is totaly understandable it is your mod and a GREAT mod at that no credit taken away. But for a business or commercial stand point without the stats it is useless. I have 25 websites and will use this mod on about 10 of them but rest are to commercial and need to record stats to show the clients. I client log in to check stats is a huge plus as well which would be a great add on.

Oh, I wasn't being rude! Nothing wrong with the idea, but I made it with Adsense in mind which has third party stats so it was never part of my intention. Lots of other advertisement providers do the same so it's not useless in that sense, although I appreciate it's not very helpful if you want to do your own. I guess it's possibility for the future, but for now it would require too much of a rewrite.

No problem @ your PM. :)

There's nothing I can do about the Adsense size. The forum will expand to fit whatever sized banners you use. If you want a smaller forum, use smaller banners.

Someone else mentioned the drop-down menu problem earlier and I said it didn't exist, but I checked again out of suspicion and it's only happening in Internet Explorer. So this is either yet another bug to add to Internet Explorer's impressive collection, or there's something in the advertisement code causing the problem. I can think of nothing in the Ad Management code that would cause it, the Ad code is included after the drop-down menu code.

Does the drop-down issue still occur if you use non-Adsense banner code? Just an image or something.

Edit: Click install or you'll miss updates.

Yes. That's the postbit setting/location. You can turn any ad location on/off independantly and the postbit location has three further on/off settings (Private Messages, Announcements, Posts).

Confirmed this and found a fix that works for me, hope it works for you too. I'll update the instructions for the next update as everyone should do this.

The drop-down menu is an Internet Explorer bug, version 6 is all I've tested. To fix it, instead of pasting $postbit_advertisement at the bottom of the template:

FIND:
<!-- post $post[postid] popup menu -->

ABOVE, ADD
$postbit_advertisement

This just moves the ad code so that the drop-down code comes after it instead of before. Why this would make a difference I can't imagine, but there you go.

Add usergroup 1 to the list of usergroups you want to display the banners to.

The user will enter his Adsense ID and Channel ID in his profile.

ADMIN SIDE
1. Can turn Adsense Revenue Sharing on/off

2. Can configure the percentage (%) of how ads will rotate, i.e. 50% for the user (thread starter) and 50% for the default (the owner)

2. Can configure how many posts required before the USER's ADS will display in the areas of the forum.

4. Can configure number of days a user must be a member before they can participate in adsense revenue sharing

Optional: If possible sharing can be split on three: The Owner, The Thread Started, and The Last Poster. This way, users will entice to post becuase if he is the last poster then he has also the chance of showing his ads. The sharing can be 40%-30%-30%

This ad is brilliant but i've got 1 problem. When using opera the ad works fine and is displayed as in pic 1 in the attachment. However when using firefox or i.e is is displayed way too the left as in pic 2.

Edit the leftcolumn/rightcolumn_advertisement and alter style="padding-left/right:12px;" to your taste.

My advertisers pay me to run banner ads for certain time periods. Usually, monthly, quarterly or yearly. It would be great if we could place a start date and an end date for when these ads run.

That way, I could manage my banner ad program with all of my advertisers easier.

For example, say I have 10 advertisers. For simplicity, 10 rotating banner advertisements are displayed at the top of my forum. I may well add this for the static banner code sections but for the random banners that's quite a major task I'm not looking to do at this stage, which I appreciate is primarily what it's for but if it's very important to you and you don't mind a required payment there's a mod by The Geek called GAB which does it per banner I believe.

No, you don't need to edit any templates you don't want to add adverts to.

It does create the columns by itself, but like every other ad section you can turn them on or off in the AdminCP. All are off by default.

Followed all instructions, it is working on the footer, when displaying all threads in a specific forum, but not in the threads themselves. Only step I could not follow was header_advertisement because there is no &nbsp; in our custom header which has an ad.

Any idea where I can start looking to find why it is not displaying when viewing threads?

That's the reason all the ads are templated, so people can make further customisations if they need to. It was made with that in mind. :)

Surround the contents of the templates you want to alter with a conditional. Put this at the top of each template you want to alter:

And this at the bottom:


</if>


Replace 1,2,3 with the Usergroup IDs of the ones you want to see the advert, or put an ! between the " and is_member_of to change it to the usergroups you don't want to see the advert.

I have implemented advertisements on header, footer and postbit .

The header will be shown to those who are NOT registered, but after login, the header ads will not be shown. The header ad will show exciting things like "JOIN AND WIN FREE GIFTS" etc. The footer ad will not display ad, but I plan to put some howtos and help as shown in this new vb.org skin down below -- table that says "new to this site? need help? etc. The ads below posts, those will be used to display weekly lotteries, quizzes and gifts.

I want to have a specific section for ads in the PM part, because the PM will be only opened from inside the control panel, and there I want to put something like "Have you set your gender? do this this.. or Add yourself to the google map .. click to the right etc"


I am going to put phpadsnew codes into the ads box. Hope that works fine :)

Not with this modification, no. You'd have to edit the postbit template and for each specific thread add this to where you wanted the ad to go:

Just change the template edit to $GLOBALS[$header_advertisement] (I think it is, it's discussed earlier in the thread for vBCMPS) and add it to the navbar template instead of the header template. But the thought does occur that I could add perhaps two "miscellanous" adcode sections which can be placed anywhere at all in case someone wants a header template and a navbar template, for instance.

It was never intended to rotate without a refresh. It just picks a random advert on page load.

Yeah, when I was making the template changes it occured to me that it problably doesn't make sense to put the formatting in the AdminCP.

Some Miscellaneous sections would be nice. I was redoing my Navbar anyway, I just hard coded the phpAdsNew code in the Navbar. We have ads in both the header and the Navbar (http://forum.voxilla.com/).

I'm not using the left and right columns, so I guess I could retask one of those for the Navbar. The reason we started using your mod was to move the ads into the thread and post bit area. We had a wide skyscraper, but we didn't like the wasted space below the ad right column.

I still need to do some tweaking, like sending the ad post position information back to phpAdsNew, so we can track which ad positions work best.

The mod was easy to install and works great.

A possible bug I found. If you copy and paste the Google Adsense code into the static header/footer box and save it, the ad WILL show up. However, if you put the same code into the rotation banner box with another banners code, the Google Adsense ads don't show correctly. The other banner shows fine.
