Question,

My friend has this script installed and I am considering installing it as well. My question is, that since it is all editable via the control panel, what if you want to have multiple pages with different information. Say you wanted have 2 different pages, one for music and one for movies. I know in the pervious versions of vbhome you were able to edit the index.php file to include articles from a certain forum and to include or not include certain threads for the lastest thread part. With the control panel options, it sets up to use the same artilces and same lastest threads on all the pages with this script.

So my question is how can I customize, if it is possible, what appears on my different index pages? Can I make it to where different content appears on all of them? I hope this makes sense :)

Thanks for your time,
Emma

Ok i have installed this twice now

and i can get most of it to work - i get everything down the left hand side as it should be but nothing appears in the middle no matter what - is just a big blank space also take a look at this small gif - i cant see the posts that should be there so any help on this would be apprec.

I have gone over this many times and no matter what end up with same results..

I just tried to upgrade for 3.5 to 4.2 and I receive this error:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare archive_nopermission() (previously declared in /home/rcnitro/public_html/global.php:378) in /home/rcnitro/public_html/forum/admin/functions.php on line 2529

I do have TECK's archive hack also installed, is this the problem?

TECK

Yes, there is an add-on made for vbHL related to archive, better then the VB one.

WoodiE
03-30-2003, 09:12 PM
Ok I've managed to fix the above problem, how this is what I have:

I used to have the vbArchive 1.3 for vBulletin installed, I have recently upgraded to vbHL 4.2 and have completely uninstalled vbArchive 1.3 and have installed vbArchive 1.4 for vbhl 4.2.

Since I have upgraded to vbHL 4.2 I have had MANY problems. (I should have stayed with 3.5)

As of right now, the Archive link on the main page (www.rcnitrotalk.com) will take you to the archive page, click on a forum and that also works, but click on a THREAD and I receive "The page cannot be displayed"

Also

How can I make the "Friendly URL Link" to work again. I once had the "LINK EACH FORUM/THREAD DIRECTLY TO ARCHIVE FILES" mod/hack for 1.3 installed, but this link no longer works with 1.4, what do i have to do to make it work again?

I also with vbhl 4.2 my bbcode works in the forum, but not on the front page. Example, I insert an image in a thread...it works fine in the forum, but the main page (vbhl) only shows the link.

Whats up?

Just a note on another neat way that vbHome can be used. Before even seeing logician's WEBTEMPLATES hack, I wanted the ability to show static-looking pages based on threads. Having already installed vbHome, I figured it would be nice to use its functionality for each static page. You can see what I did at:

Yes, but I don't want a php file for EVERY static page I want. I had been using that tutorial prior to make my setup more flexible.

Another thought...If we added another field to the thread row (articleview), then there could be a flag set in the edit forum and setting up article views would be even easier.

You have 2 diff header templetes. One for forums and one for home. They are located in their own templete groups. Just edit them accordingly.

Ok Here is what Is going on with a recent issue of mine.

I have two licensed forums running on my domain with vbhome tied into one. I wanted to resolve the cookie to path issue so I put the /forums and /buzzchamber in the Path to Cookie section under VBulletin options.
This made it so you could sign into both forums at the same time and not lose either setting. Unfortunately, what it did do is it wouldnt allow you to retain your settings on the home page on my site..so now I am back to the issue of two forums and losing the settings when I sign into one or the other.

It seems to me though that I cant seem to retain path to cookies on vbHome when I also am retaining them on VBulletin.

In the version I have you can choose whom you want to have post votes on the index page buy putting there ID number in the Admin control panel. But the question I have is. I want everyone to post votes to be viewed on the index page. If I leave it blank I get an error when the index page tries to load. This is the best portal addon for vB released in my opinion, and is a winner of the most recent Hack of the Month.

If you cannot install it, don't blame the hacker or the hack. Calling this hack crap is unnecessarily rude and does not reflect well on your character.

"The hacker cannot guarantee to provide support for this hack."
Rule no. 6:
You must offer a way to contact you if the installers have questions or problems. If you don't want to provide support for your hack - then you must state in the first post that your hack comes with no support.

My way to provide support is through my forums. Is my right, as stated on the vBulletin.org rules...
Funny, even with this, this script is the 2nd most installed for vBulletin. Something is wrong, since I have such crappy rules and since my post is to long to read, right xiphoid?

If is so complicated for you vbHome (lite), you want to tell me why you installed the script on several web sites, charging money for it?

Floris
04-14-2003, 12:50 PM
The hack is great,
the first 100 lines are cluthered and I don't think it is fun to have to register on other forums just to get support on a community where I already registered (here).

I even charge money to install lesane's hacks.

TECK

Then you should post those comments to all hackers who post hacks with no support.
Is not you who make the rules at vBulletin.org site. Those rules aply to all of us but you are the only one who is never happy with something. It has to be something in every hack that bothers you.
Instead of posting constructive positive comments, you take a hammer and start hammering everything, like you are the father of PHP or vBulletin.

At least make sure your comments are acurate.

Friends,

According to the vbulletin.org rules, hacker has right NOT to give support for released hacks. So if Teck has chosen to do so (or not giving his support here), this is ok.

Please understand that the hacks released here are all FREE and we are just grateful to all hack authors who are sharing their work with all fellow vbulletin users without commercial intentions. It would be really very unfair to expect the hack authors force to commit more time to give support for their released hacks. It would also lead many hack authors choose not to release their hacks if they are forced to give support here.

So whether a hack has support of its author or not, it is welcomed here in vbulletin.org provided that it complies with board rules (Teck's hack does). If you don't like to install such a hack, that is your call, then do not install it. But please refrain from comments what will offence hack authors who are helping us having a great hacking community here.

Also please do not clutter hack threads with discussions not related to the hack itself and share your thoughts about vbulletin rules or policies or eachother in site feedback forum or via private messages, if you have further comments.

Thank you!

should i be seeing the vbHome section in the forum admin after running the vbhlinstall script?

the vbhome options need to be set in this section before it will work right?

cant seem to figure out what i missed. . been through the readme line by line many times. . verified/uploaded the relavant files . . ran the uninstall/install script a bunch too. . read through this thread and it doesnt seem to be a known issue. . (so its probably me) . . seems straight forward enough and all the new templates are there but the vbhome admin isnt in there in vbulletin options

Does anybody of you have custmoized it? Need it for my board webmaxtor.com, if you got an idea, e-mail me or ICQ, I'll help you with design, in case you need a custom style for vB.
Code like on vbulletinstyles.com? If so, can you give some links or just good instructions? Need to do it, don't know how. :ermm:

Okay - I'm a serious newb so bear with me.

I want to include the left column features in vbhome (search, recent articles, hello user, etc) across all my vbulletin forums. Obviously from reading what is already in this thread, all it requires is to incorporate vbhome code into my vbulletin templates. Problem is since I'm seriously green at this, I'm not sure how to go about this or if it will even work.

VBhome features are great, hence I want them in my entire forums - but is it modular enough to allow me to paste into vbulletin templates??

Hello,
I installed the vbhome hack, and I must congratulate the author for the simplicity and powerfulness of the system.

However I have a little suggestion.
On the author own site, there is a "Source link" that seems to be built in in the hack, which is not in the vbhome script I downloaded.

I think a built in "Source" link, with a link pointing to the full article would be very usefull for people who report what is going on other sites. This would come as a new field when admins submit articles to their board. I'd like also this "source link" to be templated so I could insert it in forumdisplay (for users who want to bipass our own link and go directly to the source) and also anywhere on vbhome home page.

I think it would be a simple yet interesting option to the system to increase its news management capabilities and user friendliness.

Cordially,
Sharg

Floris
04-24-2003, 10:50 AM
Check the path to the images, and see what it says 'hover over an image and right click > properties' - you will see what it is and what it actually should be, change the path. You could also just edit the home page template: home_header and set the path manually, this is what I did to get them to work without spending too much time on it. Once the header buttons are correct, the rest will fall in place too probably.

cmaz44

I can find all the properties and files and it seem like the path is what it say in the properties. What else can I do? THe button just have text and then an x and they look awful.

STEP 4
Open vBulletin Admin Control Panel and a new {imageshome} replacement variable to your full website URL, like that:
Replacements > Add

and enter the following information:REPLACEMENT SET
(your choice here)
CODE TO FIND
{imageshome}
CODE TO INSERT
forum/images

Change the code to insert to match your forum location. Save the replacement variable.

You need to do step 4.

Goto your Admin Control Panel, go to the Replacements Link at the bottom of the Menu, and click Add.

And enter the following:

Code to find: {imageshome}
Code to insert: forums/images

(change forums to what ever your forums directory is called)

--

The vbHome control panel part is under the:
Options -> vBulletin Options
Its listed in the link list as: [Front Page]

Section, and is called: Front Page

--

I have copy'n'pasted the installation section of the readmefirst.html page, which is included in the zip file, you need to do all the installation in the order specified and then upload the relevent files, and run the vbhlinstall.php

Tell us if this helps?

====
STEP 1
Open template.php file (located in /admin/forum folder) and perform the code change listed below.
FIND:
$only['getinfo'] = 'User Info Display';
BELOW, ADD:
$only['home'] = 'Home Page';

Save the file.

STEP 2
Open newthread.php file (located in /forum folder) and perform the code change listed below.
FIND:
$postid=$DB_site->insert_id();
BELOW, ADD:
if (in_array($foruminfo['forumid'], explode(',', $articleforum))) {
$DB_site->query("UPDATE thread SET articleid=$postid WHERE threadid=$threadid");
}

Save the file.

STEP 3
Open vbHome (lite) global.php file and change the default admin path:
$adminpath = 'forum/admin';

to your actual admin path, for example:
$adminpath = 'board/admin';

Save the file.
STEP 4
Open vBulletin Admin Control Panel and a new {imageshome} replacement variable to your full website URL, like that:
Replacements > Add

and enter the following information:REPLACEMENT SET
(your choice here)
CODE TO FIND
{imageshome}
CODE TO INSERT
forum/images

Change the code to insert to match your forum location. Save the replacement variable.

STEP 5
Still in your vBulletin Admin Control Panel, create a new forum, called Web Site News (or whatever is more appropriate for your site).
STEP 6
Upload all files onto your folder. The following order is recommended:

[ROOT] - upload here your vbHome (lite) index.php, backend.php and global.php files
---[FORUM] - upload here your vbHome (lite) printarticle.php and vBulletin newthread.php files
------[ADMIN] - upload here your vbHome (lite) vbhlinstall.php and vBulletin template.php files
------[IMAGES] - upload here your arrow.gif, article.gif, articleemail.gif and articleprint.gif files
---------[POLLS] - upload here your bar.gif, bar-bk.gif, bar-l.gif and bar-r.gif files
FINAL STEP
Run the vbHome (lite) vbhlinstall.php script installer.
It will update the database with all needed settings to work together with your vBulletin forum.

its pointing to the backend file, but its not getting any feed from that..

If I put in for example the one teck gave me into trillian or even a browser it works (ie the feed from tecks site)...

and in a browser I get:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>
<!DOCTYPE rss (View Source for full doctype...)>

yet if I point to my backend.php via a browser I just get a done message and nothing displayed...

hence I know its not picking up anything or making a feed.

TECK,

Just some feedback. I had the toughest time finding the article indexer link. I didn't even see the links at the top of the install file and the threads here said it was added to the /admin directory but never mentioned it was in the install file. Symantics I know, but making the links red or something might help make them more obvious since so many other people have been having problems finding it.

193 pages is a lot to read and search does not work on a single thread unless someone knows something i dont.
So im pretty sure if everyone who was stucj had to read 193 pages then Vbull would not be where it is today.

I see from the other side as well - answering questions that are already been either sorted or fixed - so maybe dead posts which aint relevant to the hacks should be deleted thus lowering the posts and making it easier to find stuff withing a thread.

without looking through the prior 2887 threads, if i remember correctly you have to allow HTML in whichever forum(s) you're displaying as articles on your main page (prolly your news forum) to display bb tag info correctly..i might be mistaken but give it a rip and see if that works for ya

Here is the solution for the IMG code....

Version: vbHomeLite 4.2

resolve issue with no bbimagecode-parsing:
Files to modify: vbHomeLite 'global.php'

------------------------------------------------------------------
1) find in 'global.php':
------------------------------------------------------------------

function codeparse( $bbcode , $allowsmilie=0 )
{
global $allowhtml,$activebbcode,$activesmilie;

$dohtml = $allowhtml;
$dobbcode = $activebbcode;
$dosmilies = $activesmilie;

return makecodeparse( $bbcode , $dohtml , $dosmilies , $dobbcode );
}
------------------------------------------------------------------
replace with:
------------------------------------------------------------------
function codeparse( $bbcode , $allowsmilie=0 )
{
global $allowhtml,$activebbcode,$activesmilie;

$dohtml = $allowhtml;
$dobbcode = $activebbcode;
$dobbimagecode = $activebbcode;
$dosmilies = $activesmilie;

return makecodeparse( $bbcode , $dohtml , $dosmilies , $dobbcode, $dobbimagecode );
}

------------------------------------------------------------------
2) find in 'global.php':
------------------------------------------------------------------

function makecodeparse( $bbcode , $dohtml , $dosmilies , $dobbcode )

------------------------------------------------------------------
replace with:
------------------------------------------------------------------

function makecodeparse( $bbcode , $dohtml , $dosmilies , $dobbcode, $dobbimagecode )

------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

Now set in admincp -> vBulletin Options -> [Front Page]:
'Enable BB Code in article?' to yes.

Hope that helps!!
Please correct me, if I'm wrong.

Personally that's not the way I would do things - that's just me though. Considering the fact that Teck is releasing his product here for free though, I don't think his request that support be handled on his own forums is too much to ask, and I'm sure he has his reasons for this.

I'd like to take the vbhome sidebar with sponsor, greeting, etc and copy it to my entier vbulletin. Every page with a few exceptions if possible would have the sidebar on it.

So, as users browse the forum (not just vbhome) they would still see the sponsor, welcome, recent articles, etc.

I imagine it will take playing with the templates a good bit. Any advice?

Here is the solution for the IMG code....

Version: vbHomeLite 4.2

resolve issue with no bbimagecode-parsing:
Files to modify: vbHomeLite 'global.php'

(bunch of crap)

Hope that helps!!
Please correct me, if I'm wrong.

Greetz, Magic Spark

No, that doesn't work. I myself am having the problem with replacements not actually replacing {imageshome} with the right stuff. It appears as many other people have too, and it also appears as the owner of vBulletin home lite just ignores the problem--rudely.

I'm a little green on this and I'm having trouble with step 4 could someone give me a little more deatail onthis step. I'm in the control pannel and have selected Replacements > Add
and don't under stand what to do next.

STEP 4
Open vBulletin Admin Control Panel and a new {imageshome} replacement variable to your full website URL, like that:
Replacements > Add

and enter the following information:REPLACEMENT SET
(your choice here)
CODE TO FIND
{imageshome}
CODE TO INSERT
forum/images

Change the code to insert to match your forum location. Save the replacement variable.

Here's how you fix it. When it's all said and done you have to go to admin CP vB lite homepage options things and find the field that asks about the template set. Assign it one that (still) exists.

I believe it's set as default to 0.

I managed to stubble by and get it working and get buy the below error

Invalid SQL:
SELECT COUNT(*) AS total
FROM thread
WHERE forumid IN( ) AND dateline>1051847882.

Might be a good idea to note that in the instructions that you should turn on all the options in the vbhome section in the control panel to get past that error. It took me two hours to read and find a post to fix it.

How do I edit the header so the I can make the home page look more like the forums format?

Hey, he did very well by posting a violation of the copyright.
If you complain is probably because you do/think the same.
vbHome (lite) is free to use ONLY if you do NOT alter the copyright notice and follow the conditions listed in the first post related to copyright.

Did you removed the vBulletin copyright? You did not. Why?
So what gives the right to someone to do it with my script? Nothing.
You don't like the conditions, don't use the script. Simple.

Yes because I think tattle-tales are annoying, that must mean I am doing everything they are tattling on. What a great and noble theory!

I don't even understand what this means. And for the record, I installed vBulletin lite. The copywrite is still there, but I don't actually use it because it sucks. mYvBindex is much better, anyway. Plus, you can't just alter an already copywrited material to spice it up and then put a copywrite on it yourself--as well as try to force people to keep the links you stick in it. If I ever do use this hack, I will probably remove your copywrite because it is not legit.

Anyway, the site has probably been reported to VB HQ for missing copyright info a dozen times by now, as it should be.

Still a great hack, Teck. Cant wait to see what you develop next. =)

As a suggestion, there are a few really common mistakes people make on the installation. You may consider updating the installation help page to include instructions on resolving more of them, if nothing else just to save yourself some trouble telling them to search the thread.

I wasn't going to respond to this, but I think I need to clear a few things up here.

Teck spent a lot of time and energy putting together this hack and continues to improve on it with every new release. It is stable and has a lot of the same things the other Home Page hacks have and at a fraction of what they are going for (which is free, actually). All he asks in return is to leave the copyright there. Is that really too much to ask? vBulletin does it and do you complain to them? We here at vb.org are a community. And communities watch out for each other and take care of their own. That's all I was doing. It's not "tattling" as you call it. (That's a term for children, by the way.) It is merely righting a potential wrong. If that doesn't set well with you, then I'm sorry, but learn to deal with it. 'Nuff said!

TECK, first off, thanks for creating this hack. I'd really like to install this and check it out.

I followed the install step-by-step, but I get the following error when hitting index.php:

-----
Database error in vbHome 2.3.0:

Invalid SQL:
SELECT COUNT(*) AS total
FROM thread
WHERE forumid IN( ) AND dateline>1052778722

mysql error: You have an error in your SQL syntax near ') AND dateline>1052778722
' at line 4

mysql error number: 1064
-----

After running your install script, everything looked good. I got the feedback that it was updating the necessary tables, and everything was a "success".

However, along with the error above, I don't even get a vbHome (lite) options area on vBulletin Admin Control Panel.

I'm assuming I have to set some things up, before I can actually hit the index.php with success, but I can't without any vbHome (lite) options area on vBulletin Admin Control Panel.

Any ideas?

I'd really like to test this out, thanks.

TECK, thanks for your patience, I got it initially installed now. :)

The thing that really threw me were the install instructions and references made to "vbHome Page". The instructions say:

"You will see a new group created by the installer, called vbHome Page.
The following options are available:"

Actually, in 4.2 it's just called "Front page", not "vbHome page". So after the install, I would do a find in my browser for "vbhome" in the Admin CP page, and it kept coming up with nothing.

It's actually called "Front Page". Doh! So for any idiots like me out there who got confused on the install, that's the reason.

Thanks again for your patience, TECK, and I look forward to customizing this hack for my forum.

Ok, I am a total newbie to this. But I have a question.

I want to install vbLite to my forums, but I do not want to put it on my main URL. I have a flash intro that I use and I want to keep it. If I follow the instructions on vbLite, it routs to vblite and bypasses my index.html.

So, I created a folder called main on my main page, and uploaded all the files there, but its not matching up with what is in the 3 vblite files (since I do not have them on my main url)

I know vblite is fine and working, becuase I closed my site for a min, and put everything on the main page, and it was all there, but then you missed my intro.

Please help me figure out how to change the code so it looks for everything in the right place.

Many thanks, and sorry if this is a stupid question. I am still learning.

fitnessgeared.com
steroidology.com
competitivemuscle.com
bodybuilding4life.com
board1.mantisforums.com

from version 3.6 to 4.2 and with the archive addon.
I definitly prefer vB Home over vB Portal or any other frontpage, it is easy to install and easy to modify and works with multiple styles.

By the way, are there any additional modules out for integration? Like the shoutbox, or the weather box or a calendar or some other fun stuff ?

Anyway, does anyone know... if I install this on the board will they have to log-in since it is a new page, or will the cookies remember them from the forum?

Teh reason that I ask is a lot of my users are not computer savvy and if I add this and they have to log-in the 1st time that they come to the new homepage it will be mass hysteria.

Just a suggestion, but it seems there are a dozen or so really common problems users go through on any installation. Why not include solutions to the most common ones right in the readme file, or a seperate Help file? It would probably save you the trouble of answering this question every few days.

It would also save users the trouble of searching through 200 pages of posts, trying to find the answer to a problem sooo many other people have also suffered through. After going through that hassle myself I found 99% of the posts matching my search terms were just redirects to search the thread, heh.

Again, excellent hack as always.

I tried VBPortal, but you have to put the forums say under...

Instead of

/home/yoursite/subdomain/blahblah.php

If you try to put it seperately, you will get all kinds of error messages.

Hi Teck,

I'm dying to try this! I'm currently using VBPortal Lite, but it uses 49/51 queries. As I just got thrown out by my last host for excessive mysql usuage, I'm anxious to get the count down, even though my current host says I'm doing ok.

Can I install this without interferring with the current VBPortal set up? I don't want to disrupt my board while I'm getting things set up.

Currently the index directs to vbportals page, but putting your index file in the root interferes with that. Would it still work if I renamed the index to 'home.php'? That way the portal would only be called when that is included in the url ie: www.mysite.com/home.php. As nobody else would know that url then I could play about setting things up, while the VBPortal operates simultaneously. When it's all set up, I can then delete VBPortal, and no disruption to anyone.

Is this possible?

Thanks for any advice. :)

ETA: Ooh, I've just found out, I can indeed do that. Didn't work at first now it does. Cool. I shall now go play! ;)

I have tried to install this program.

Created a new database.

Installed vbulletin 2.3.0, fresh.

Read the readme file, multiple times. Followed each step exactly, including, copying the find/paste to a notepad first, before re-copying to make sure any formatting was clear.

Installed this hack 100% successfully.

Verified all paths. forum/admin ( I used the example default) and making a replacement template forum/images (used that default too)

Vbulletin Options - Front Page game up, changed multiple options and saved. Verified saves.

go to main page, no images work.

Set multiple templates on, no love. Went into the phpadmin and verified everything was at default value 1 for replacements and styles and set that variable to 1 anyway in the admin menu.

Still no images. Just X's.

I have 3 computers around me, so I'd use different ones with different browsers to look at the site, no change. Cleared cache ech time.

Went into the templates, edited all the home based templates to reflect real world paths, both http://domain.com/forum/images and just forum/images. Still no actual change in images.

Copied and pasted url's for images in text bars in browsers and they will pull up.

tried using those in the home templates, still no love.

Am I missing something?

I deleted everything and walked through the process with someone standing over my shoulder reading each step as we went along a second and third time -- all with the same results.

Should I call it quits and use something else? any recommendations? I don't want to go the php-nuke route again.

Thanks for your consideration.

I will ask of a favor. May someone please post the code and changes necessary in order for viewers to see the article on the main page instead of simple the article link? I mean, that's how I'd like it but I have no clue as to how I can do that.

Or, if a thread / post with this explanation already exists elsewhere, may someone link me?

Hi, I asked this question over at Teck's forums, haven't heard back yet...so I'm hoping a few users here may know the answer :

Open template.php file (located in /admin/forum folder) and perform the code change listed below.

Shouldn't that be /forum/admin ?

[ROOT] - upload here your vbHome (lite) index.php, backend.php and global.php files ---[FORUM] - upload here your vbHome (lite) printarticle.php and vBulletin newthread.php files ------[ADMIN] - upload here your vbHome (lite) vbhlinstall.php and vBulletin template.php files ------[IMAGES] - upload here your arrow.gif, article.gif, articleemail.gif and articleprint.gif files ---------[POLLS] - upload here your bar.gif, bar-bk.gif, bar-l.gif and bar-r.gif files

Isn't the "forum" directory the root directory for the forum? Is that saying with the index.php, backend.php and global.php I should put those in a directory outside of the directory my forum is in? If not then what is the "forum" directory? There is no forum directory inside the root of where vB is installed...

And it says to upload printarticle.php and newthread.php but in the download there is no newthread.php in the forum directory, only printarticle.php.

Could I get some clarification here? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Ok, I understand this now...

It installs a new portal index at www.yourdomain.com not at www.yourdomain.com/forum

That's where all of my confusion was...

So you HAVE to install the vB portal at the root of the forum directory?

You can't install in the same directory?

The reason why I thought this was because I came from InvisionBoard and the invision portal can be installed in the same directory, for instance at www.yourdomain.com/forum

Well, the gods know I am not really qualified to help anyone here, but I'll try.

Poison Fly - I don't really know what you are asking. I made a post in my 'site news' forum and it shows up, with the icon, subject and body of the post on the index.php in my main/root directory. All I did was set options to 'yes' and save them in vbulletin options.

Mirri - Go to vbulletin Options, front page and make a change, then save. Verify your articles forum ID matches the one you have set in vbulletin options and then run the vbhlinstall.php and reindex your articles.

dvd4arab - I suspect if you want a style like vbportal or vbhome, you'll have to make changes to templates or php files.

GXON - go to vbulletin options and front page, make a change and then save your changes. That fixed the problem for me.

Future - It is forum/admin -- that is apparently reversed. upload the index.php, global.php and backend.php into your main/root directory, not under the forum directory. You can actually install those 3 files under a subdirectory though, but just not in a directory where you already have an index.php or it won't work right.

Well, don't hold me on it, I tried. Hopefully it helped.

Just a quick (hopefully easy to answer) question:

How do you get the news content to display? The headlines and other info show up fine, but none of the content...

(I probably overlooked something, but figured I should ask while I'm checking things out.)

I installed it, it seems like it doesn't have much features, how do you use this thing? I mean:

How do you get the skins to work?

How do you get the images to show up? I did the template replace

Is there any more admin features besides the small admin under admin options?

How do we add sponsors?

Our site has the same skin as http://tech-heaven.com - How do we get it to look like that?

Since Teck isn't answering, I'll volunteer:

Please re-read Teck's description of what this hack actually does:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?postid=234380#post234380

1.) How do you get the skins to work?

The "skins" in this thing is merely the home_headinclude template, where you can change colors ... to create a different "skin", you merely create a new vbulletin style and just change the colors in home_headinclude template to what you like .... also note that you can change almost every aspect of the index page by modifying the home_* templates...

2.) Is there any more admin features besides the small admin under admin options?

No. Except for the Frontpage options in the VB Control Panel, this is not like vBPortal or phpNuke where there is a reviews section, downloads section or any other section that is not built into vBulletin ... it is merely an index page that organizes vBulletin content in a CMS-like manner...

3.) How do we add sponsors?

Look for the "Enable Advertisements" in the Frontpage section vBulletin main options page and choose Yes, then edit the home_advertisement template to put whatever ads, links or sponsors you like.

4.) Our site has the same skin as http://tech-heaven.com - How do we get it to look like that?

You have the same skin yet you want it to look like that? Confusing little statement there, but I think I know what you actually wanted to ask:

Anyway, see what colors they are using, and study what header/footer format they used, and modify your home_headinclude, home_header and home_footer templates accordingly ... to make this a "skin", create a new vbulletin style and do the changes there... (or you can just ask them what their templates contain) ... you may want to modify it a bit, of course, lest you make your page a complete copycat of tech-heaven :D

If you wanna see how much you can customize vBhome, check my site (http://www.opentechsupport.net)...

Any more questions?

Run the install file (vbhlinstall.php) for vBHome Lite again, and pay close attention to the top menu options ... click on the link called "Article Indexer" or something... I think it was mentioned in the readme file ;)

As for your problem with regards to the layout, that will have more to do with your HTML skills rather than vBHome itself ;) Mess around with the templates - it isn't that hard...

Here's a hint tho: tech-heaven's main table uses a fixed width ... go from there...

Crinos
06-09-2003, 04:46 AM
First of all, no offense, but you whine too much ...

Anyway,

1.) DO i have to run the article indexer each time i post news?

NO ... There is a readme with that vBHome installation ... readit... it tells you the only instances where you need to run it.

2.) As for changing the width, how the heck can i do that when there are so many css files, i have gone through almost all of them and still no luck, i did get the header though

First of all, there is only ONE CSS, and that's in home_headinclude ... second, the CSS file does not control the width of your tables - they only control your fonts colors, font sizes, table colors, etc. To modify your table width you go to your "home" template, or any other template where the table width is specified. Are you sure you know what you're doing?

3.) Why won't the article icon show up now

Maybe coz you removed it when you modified your templates? View the original template for home_articlebit, and search for this line:
<a href="$bburl/showthread.php?s=$session[sessionhash]&amp;threadid=$article[threadid]">
<img src="{imageshome}/article.gif" alt="Read article" class="imgbordermiddle" height="14" width="53" />
</a>

That's the line you removed when you edited your templates, so it's your fault they're not there ;) Put it back in if you like - where to put it is up to you, figure it out...

Oh, and by the way, YOU'RE WELCOME :)

I read the readme, i'm not dumb :rolleyes:

I got it working fine, and i removed the post icon since it wouldn't work, plus takes up too much space, so i'm getting used to it.

I pm'ed a guy at tech-forums.net and he helped me, told me how to get it to work

======================

As for do i know what i am doing, i know html very well, but do i know the vbhome lite files? No, so i guess i don't know what i am doing..

And yes i specified the widt and it didn't resize it, but now i got it to work.
