i am saying when a user initiates the file downloading, the http downloading link make the exact file location on the server visible to the downloader.

The real link isn't file_name.rar

The real link is something like file_name123412.rar.

You can change the link which is visible for the user to something fancy by hacking the downloads2.php file (should be line 380 or something where the http headers are beeing send - haven't checked right now - the number is out of the top of my head, i looked into it some months ago since we wanted to change the filepath to ftp, which didn't work out).

possibility to personalize file grid
Actually the file grid has the following fields hard coded: File, Date added, Downloads, Comments. Than it ha s "Sort by" combo. I think that that drop down is useless and all fields should be configured in AdminCP as visible or not in the file grid (possibly in which sequence)
possibility to personalize sub categories
Actually subcategories are just listed under parent category description but when things get a little bit organized with some many subcategories, their listing should be better organized (maybe a grid or column or tree organization) with info of how many files they contain
additional file info
What about: "File version", "Licence", "Compatibility", "development status" ... just to list few? In general there should be few personalized fields available to to better tailor file info.
Rating
What about a rating system like vBMods: Rating ***** (xxx votes - 4.69 average)
Create thread plug-in should be native to the module
Forum and CMS block to show download module recent activity should be native
Top Block showing Pseudo random files maybe with thumbnails should better create community and interest

I envy you. We still do not get it to work. Please Log Out at your site. Go to the download section to download a file and when required make login. Let me know if it works for you.

No it doesn't work here too.
Your submission could not be processed because a security token was invalid.

I just said that the fact that unregistered users cannot access Download area in my forum is the reason why I didn't experienced that bug. Nothing else.

After you reported the bug I tested it (allowing unregistered user to access Download area) and confirmed your report. It is sure something the author of this mod should have a look (hopefully).

Without the token, people could post download links inside of IMG tags (CSRF issue), but that's only a real problem if you have big downloads combined with download size limitations for usergroups.

Open downloads.php and Find:
$smalldesc = strip_bbcode($file['description'], $stripquotes = false, $fast_and_dirty = false, $showlinks = false);
Add after:
mb_internal_encoding("UTF-8");

Find:
$smalldesc = substr($smalldesc, 0, $vbulletin->options['dl2smalldesc']);

When you say the dir is chmod 777 what do you mean? I'm a newb at this. Do you mean when in FTP by right clicking on the downloads folder and bringing up properties? Then changing the value there? I posted a screenshot, see attached...

No not yet. What are the risks of disabling it? As I run quite a large forum and do not want to risk any attacks.

The option is found under Site Name / URL / Contact Details and is called Disable Redirect Domain Checking.

Ok, so I think I figured out how one way users can be getting many of the 'invalid security token' errors. I have my Downloads Center set so only members can download files, but guests can view them.

Let's say I'm a member already but I'm not logged in. When I go to click on the download link of a file it will tell me that I do not have sufficient privileges because of X, X, or X. It then gives me the option to login/register so that I can download that file. Well, when I login it automatically directs me to a the 'security token' page instead of allowing me to continue on and download. So in order to download I have to find that file again once I'm logged in and click on the link to bring me back to the same file. Then I am able to download without the 'security token' issue.

I think that a lot of users don't realize this and just assume that they can't download the file so they do as the 'security token' error page tells them, and they contact support from there.

There may be other issues, but this seems like it could be the main issue for my situation. Can others verify. Do security tokens happen other ways as well?

Also, I suppose I could fix this issue if I don't allow guests to view files, but then that may prohibit many users from registering with my site if they can't see the comments and details of a file.

Is there anyway to make it so instead of the user continuing onto the download after logging in, that they are instead directed back to the file they were trying to download?

ok, seems that the newreply_error template was changed with 4.1.5. So instead of just doing a "<li>$errormessage</li>", it instead expects the whole $error array, and parses through it.

I ended up hacking the code to work around this, and my errors now show up.

What did you change, because I just installed this and I can't figure out what the problem is with no errors showing up.

I update files frequently with newer versions, and it is getting fustrating that it keeps the original date, where people would think it has not been updated since the 1st upload.

I would REALLY like a "Version" field too to be consistant....

I agree that the support is lacking as of late, and should be marked unsupported if that is the case, but they are not "free" and nor should be. Devs put a lot of hard work into these mods and should be receiving donations for their time.

When you don't get any file endings in your error message it could be because you don't configured them in your Downloads II settings.

Having some problems with the Downloads and I'm on 6.0.5. Basically a members secondary usergroup allows them to download products but when they are logged in and click on the latest downloads in the blocks or the downloads.php, they get:

Then it redirects them to downloads.php where they see no files at all. I've checked the permissions and everything looks good. One of our members has two different secondary groups that allow them access to the same download categories, not sure if there is a conflict there.

It is working because as administrator I can see the downloads and it does not tell me Invalid File ID. Thanks for your assistance.

I have exactly the same invalid file ID error. Seems to be purely random for users. Sometimes they experience it and after a few attempts it all of a sudden works.

Depends what you mean. If you can you download the downloadsII plugin without being attached to a member account then no. If you mean can an unregistered guest download contents through the downloads plugin if its installed on a site then yes.

We are experiencing problems with our forum.
Up until today it was working fine.

When our customer try to download a file over about 5 Meg (using download II) they now get an error message:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 10451457 bytes) in /data/12/1/145/37/1145526/user/1216855/htdocs/forum/downloads.php on line 763

The problem file is about 9 Meg and it has previously been downloaded thousands of times using download II

It seems this started when we upgraded to Vb 4.1.7

We have just switched over to this from Links and Downloads, which is now no longer supported due to the coder passing away.

We are using our downloads area for 2 things. General files and files that only subscribers can download. We need the subscriber files to be viewable by all, but not downloadable. I'm looking at the user permissions and it's looking like you can only exclude folks from seeing a category, not downloading from it.

Is there a way to keep everything viewable but not downloadable?

I have been hacked two times by use of this script. They have somehow managed to upload .php file extensions when i only have .zip allowed. Also only trusted members can upload files. The files aren't being renamed to the same file structure as normally uploaded files via the script.

use the import feature, exactly as you describe. FTP files to your server, set the import directory, hit the button :)

Extensions are the .jpg, .mp3, .doc, .zip etc etc on the end of files, you will need to specify what your users can upload

As several others have indicated, I, too, have the need for allowing each "download" to have multiple "versioned" files. Mine is for software versions, and each update needs to be available so people can select the appropriate version.
Can you please add in the option for custom fields so that I can add in a field for "Version"?

I am getting "error 500" only with files that were uploaded. Users can upload without issues but when anyone clicks the download link it's "Internal Server Error 500"

External files that are only linked are fine.

Dragonbyte Tech has a vbDownloads modification that will even let you import your DownloadsII stuff. It's not perfect (yet) and it requires paying, but that team does really good work and I'd expect what isn't perfect to be ironed out eventually. I'm actually running both on my site because I needed two separate downloads databases.

In admincp under usergroups->usergroup manager. Choose the group you want to modify permissions for and then the permissions as desired.

As for your question about db storage, the files are not stored in the db but a record of the file is, so that the plugin knows where on the file system to find the actual file.

Aren't these part of the regular installation instructions? It's been a long while since I had to install, so I don't remember, but I seem to remember having to do all that originally to get it working in the first place. I've been running this mod since vb 4.0.4 and am now running on 4.1.7 and it all works fine. I'm not happy that the author of the mod doesn't provide more support and doesn't add more features, but for what it is it does work :/

We just recently added this to our site, as Links and Downloads is no longer being worked on due to Andrew passing away. After reviewing the download log, I am seeing folks downloading things that they do not have permission to download. We have a subscription base, where a person has to purchase to gain access to, and some how some members have found a back door into these download areas and are downloading thousands of files. I cleared off the old files, resaved them and reinstalled it in the plugins section.

Now it will not upload any files, either by import or on a one by one basis.

Yes, there is. Set up a "Paid Subcription for it". Enable all usergroups to be able to view your downloads area and uploads files, and in ONE usergroup, select it so that they are able to download the files.

That usergroup will then be associated and used in the "Paid Subcriptions" for your downloads section.

It took me a little while to figure out what all the extra settings are- how to add additional extensions without getting errors, etc. It would be great if the mods area of vb would have a "wiki" spot for adding usability notes for mods. Lots of times it seems the developers/coders overlook the basics of their mods because they're so familiar with how everything works, that it seems like second nature to them. However, when people like myself download them, we often spend hours trying to get the settings to work.

Tips & Hints for using the Extensions on this mod:
when adding the new extension do NOT add a . before the extension or it won't work. Example: instead of .pdf use just pdf
although it says to use Lowercase only, if you want to accept JPG files, you can add a JPG extension and it will work fine.
Although it doesn't state it, you can leave max width & max height blank if you don't want limits on display sizeIf you're trying to add images and you don't see an upload box in the downloads form:
Make sure you have permissions set correctly in the Usergroups As well as in the main settings of the downloadsII in admincp.
If you're sure you have permissions set correctly- please note that you will NOT see the box until AFTER you've already uploaded your file. Once your file is uploaded the box will appear allowing you to add your thumbnail image.If you're trying to add images and you receive an error - but it doesn't List anything!:
Double check the extension of the image file you are uploading. Does it end in the currently acceptable formats of ( jpg| jpe | jpeg | gif | png )?
Are you sure that the extension of your image is written in Lowercase? If it's listed as yourimage.JPG it will be denied unless you add an extension.To add an extension go to AdminCp> DownloadsII> Extensions> add new extension

I believe the path should be ./ftppro/downloads

This may have been covered but, I have a scenario where I have document (pdf's) that may be downloaded by members, the author is perfectly happy that they are the there but, was rather wondering if a checkbox could be added that asked the user to comply with the copyright conditions (he has been burnt before), the obvious being that if they do not agree then no download.
This will not, of course, prevent abuse but at least it would record that they had seen and agreed to it.

Am I missing where to change the thumbnail size? If it has to be manually changed/coded where would I start? I don't want to start editing templates and files if I totally missed where to do it.

Actually I figured out how to get the main thumbnail bigger, I edited the size in the downloads.php but I need the smaller thumbnail bigger. When you click on the download you want you can read the description and view images at the bottom, under the "Images" titlebar, Right now the current thumbnail is 80px by 80px, This is the thumbnail I want to make bigger. The size I want my thumbnail is 300px by 300px any help from RS_Jelle or anyone else would be appreciated. If you don't know exactly just let me know what template it is in and I can figure it out.

UPDATE: I figured it out myself, there is 2 places to make edits to adjust both image sizes,

1) inside the download.php (This controls the main big thumbnail size)
search for:

2) inside the downloads2.css template (This controls the downloads small thumbnail size)
search for:
width: {vb:stylevar profile_sidebar_avatar_maxWidth};


And adjust the height and width to what you want
(I have it set to auto because I hard coded the values in the downloads.php)
width: auto;
height: auto;




It would be nice to add this feature in the admincp for options. I also tried have the thumbnail auto size down by percentage with still keeping the 300px height max. It worked great for the little thumbnail image description, but the main thumbnail image it made the layout/ decription all messed up. So I think its best to just set these 2 values so they don't change.

I hope this helped someone out.

The setting was off, but after turning it on, I do get the video button now in the editor, however the video bbCode is still not embedding the video (not being parsed). All I'm getting are links. Any other tips before I start digging into the code?:)

Also, just some suggestions to this very fine add-on, which I'll have to be adding myself for my customer.

1. Add a versioning system in order to easily make updates and post them. Also show the older out-dated versions for possible download/ reference.
2. Add subsciptions to the categories, so users are automatically notified of new downloads in the categories they are interested in.
3. Add subscriptions to the downloads, (if versioning is added) so users are made aware of new versions of those downloads.
4. Add SEO friendlier URLs. Like adding the name of the download in the URL too.

And something of my own, which I'm not going to add, but would be nice.

5. Comments added via AJAX.;)
6. Make the comments look like the comments everywhere else in vB. Like in the CMS and Blog.:)

Great work though. Amazing it is free and you also are supporting it. That is very generous.

First, this is my DOWNLOADSII statistics
- We have 1,672 files in 134 categories.
- They have been downloaded 304,599 times.

1- About the replies, it is very difficult to follow the replies for a member uploaded more than 200 files. I suggest to make a notification to the file uploader when someone reply (optional in admincp DOWNLOADSII options). Becuase some users may write a question and the file uploder doesn't know that there is a new reply which is including a question for him, he cannot check all his files every day to know if there is a new reply or not. I just need a feature to follow the replies in DOWNLOADSII.

2- Also, we can make a block in the side bar for the last XX replies.

I guess I'm just too new to vBulletin customization but could someone smarter then me please expand on this part of the installation instructions:

"3. Change the permissions of the downloads directory (inside your forums directory) to make it writable (chmod 777)."

It's not obvious to a new vB programmer what this means exactly. Is this in the admin CP somewhere or is it something I need to do on my server control panel?

on your server
log into your forum root via ftp and right click on the dir / folder you wish to make chmod to 777
you should have properties there and then click it.
In there you'll see attributes this is where you change the permissions

Thank you very much for the quick reply but I'm still not getting this...It seems My server c/panel does not let me set permissions for folders, only individual files..and what am I changing permissions for exactly? The download folder? Please understand, I have no idea what chmod 777 is. This is German to me, lol..and I don't speak German. Thanks for your patience..

EDIT: Okay, I figured out how to change permissions, operator error of course..but just to ensure I did this right was it th e"download" file I was supposed to change as in your example?

your server may have suphp so there is not need to set permissions .. do the files upload ?

Yes. And my server can take 20MB files but I can't get uploads to work with anything but small jpgs

Well this is very frustrating. Another 3D Modeling site has this set up and are able to upload very large files. No matter what I try I can't make it work. I really would like to have this work for my site but guess I'll just have to uninstall and find another solution. I guess I just don't understand enough about any of this to make this function.

I've done everything above, set .skp as an acceptable extension, made the file size basically unlimited, checked on my server and I can accept 20M uploads but all I ever get when I try is "Connection Reset" error messages.

That's because of the default upload limit of PHP.

You need to create a file named .htaccess (note the period in front of the name). Put the following two lines into the file:

php_value upload_max_filesize 30M
php_value post_max_size 30M

Upload the file into your forum directory (the same location where downloads.php is located.)

This will increase the size of the file you can upload to 30MB.

Does anyone really understand this well that could elaborate? What kind of file extension is this .htaccess file supposed to be? .php? or something else?..I'm so confused...

Is there a 60 second thing coded into one of DownloadII files somewhere that is causing this issue?

Good catch. The normal BBCode parser doesn't seem to handle that.

Test Category This is a test category. You can edit it in your AdminCP.

most likely it's file size ..
increase the size..
also you need to see what is allowed by your host co.
they might have Maximum file upload size and or Maximum HTTP POST size

I wanted to see if anyone else has any trouble or if they have a fix for mobile phones not being able to download files.

So far the only one I have been able to test is android since that is what I have. Someone posted on our site about android not working and I confirmed it with my phone. We basically only have pdf files and I have the mime type set to: application/pdf. When you click the download button it shows it is saving but it is a copy of the web page and named download.php.

My workaround is to redirect the logged in member to the download page for this file where he can start a new download of the file:
