Since AndrewD passed away (which really hit me hard), and the future of the Links & Download manager is at question, and because our site relies heavily on this modules, we need to look for an alternative.

Does this module do the following?


Can we schedule downloads so that they will show up on a certain date?
Can we restrict downloads by usergroup?
Can we have hidden areas for just team members?
Can we hide something that has been uploaded?

Just as Ophelia, my forums also rely on downloads. And before thinking a way to migrate into DII I have a question related to thumbnails and screenshots.

Mainly I serve wallpapers and screensavers. Is there an option to add multiple versions of a file in a single entry? In this case, a wallpapers might have different resolutions inside the same download post.

Currently I'm using an item "part 1", "part 2", etc and having to copy and paste the description in all of the parts. Other than that though this mod is great, lean, and very easy to use.

1) You need to correctly set the "Extension Usage" option of the extension. There's a difference between file (= allowed extension when adding files), image (= allowed image extension for adding images to a file afterwards) and both.


This confused me too. I thought it was a bug or something until I came here and found this. Isn't a terribly intuitive place to put it.

How can I remove the Downloads button from the Navbar, but not remove the sub-navbar when on the downloads page? I'm using a different add-on to customize my menus, but if I disable the navbar in the settings or via plug-in disabling it also kills off the subnavbar.

It got corrupted somehow :)

Run this query using phpMyAdmin or so:
UPDATE dl2_main SET `downloads` = 0
(You need to add a table prefix if necessary.)

For the moment I've installed this on my test site. I'm hoping it's a perfect fit for my needs.

My members attend different functions and would like to share zip files of their photos from each function with other attendees of that function, but NOT with the rest of the members. Is there a simple way way of doing this? It would be optimal if ONLY the members who are allowed to download the zip are also the only ones who can see the zip.

I was thinking of using the Social Groups but I don't see that I can set permissions based on Social Groups.

also... Another thought... Is it possible to have the downloads folder on a different domain or even a different server? I'm thinking this is a way to keep the main site safe from malicious code downloaded by a nefarious member if it's hosted off site and called from the main site.

I've been thinking about another feature if at all possible. I'd like to remove the "Downloads" tab from the Nav Bar. Which I can do through the ACP. But that also leaves us no link to upload files with. So I was thinking if there could be that ability from WITHIN each persons profile. At the moment you can see the list of downloads in a profile but it would be great, for my site anyway, if we can access the upload screen from the profiles. Then from there also set the permissions as we upload. Hopefully be able to set permissions based on Social Groups as well.

This is really great - and hopefully the developer will be open to borrowing from your code. Cloud file support AND a flash uploader make this mod viable for large file serving. Which is my case :D

I know the developer keeps reverting back to vbulletin updating the file manager, but at this point I believe that won't be for a lonnnnggg time. Hopefully that is no longer the case now that your code is readily available. :)

Sorry, I should be more specific. It should show the ratings in the actual file list, so that users can easily sort it without it being hidden. Just brings it more to the forefront as it will be very important for my users.

The sub-forums should be a 2 column list, similar to how VSA - Sub-Forum Manager displays subforums. It will look so much better. Also, put the files loaded in the category next to it in parenthesis. Will be nice for people to know just how many files are in certain categories.

Last request (or maybe not), the ability to add thumbnails to the file while you're adding it. Not after the fact would be great. Thanks!

If all my registered users have the same primary usergroup, with only additional permissions applied through secondary groups, can I still control category access by the secondary group?

At first glance on my dev system, the usergroup permissions dont appear to work properly for me. (4.0.5)

It would be really cool if we could have the What's New tab of vBulletin pull the downloads that the user has not viewed yet. Not sure how possible that is, but would be awesome for cross-promoting the downloads section in the forums better.

Just a recap on all the feature suggestions I made:

I'm using your mod for Skin downloads on my site and I have the comments so members may make new graphic request in specific Skin releases. Yes, if breaks the fixed templates with 4.0.5. On the main downloads.php page, it extends out past the right side of the forum. There is also a huge empty square area to the left (probably for a thumbnail, though I have that option turned off.)

I resolved this formatting issue by disabling the Vb CMS and then re-enabling it. For some reason it all cleared up and there is no longer any issue that I can find with 4.0.5

I've discovered how to move the top lists from the sidebar to the top of the page, lined side-by-side, with the sidebar only displaying the stuff you type in from the admincp. I'll put instructions in here on how to do it. If I ever figure out how to make a Recent or most Comments list (or if anyone who actually knows PHP can help me) I'll post those instructions here too... especially since I haven't seen the author of this mod respond to anything in forever.


First, an example of how I have lined up the Top lists:

I am having permission issues too.

I am in the admin group and have full permissions with no limits on either uploading or downloading, but could not upload a file of 227kb as it stated the maximum upload limit had been reached.

I am also in a secondary group which has no upload permissions at all. Removing that limit from that secondary group allowed me to upload.

downloadsII is wonderful script but it still lisnt aimed for just any sites. If theres a serious commitment with truly using the script purpose like running a true filehost you quickly fill up your primary hdd which the import feature are only working

so i hope the author can make change of that as we have several hdd mounted under same hdd wityh no possibility using the import feature at all. this will be a huge issue as once primary hdd has no space left users wont even be able to upload anymore.

and theres no possible way to do bulk uploads

this issue is exactly what im experincing now, the lack of import features renders me unable to use the download script anymore for user upload and for staff upload

Nobody commented on this. Looks like this mod doesn't currently consider both primary as well as secondary usergroups, which will not work for my needs. So in the end, I had to make a slight mod to a few of the exclude functions in class_downloads2.php. At least I can now control the main permissions via the primary usergroup, and then manage category access via the secondary usergroups. This appears to be pretty effective. Great mod Jelle! :up:

Hi RS_Jelle, been using d2 5 for vb 3.8 for ages. Love it!

On our test site we upgraded the forums to vb4.0.5 suite, and then upgrade d2 to v6 as specified in the instructions. Now, everything in the CMS displays correctly, but anything outside of the CMS (blogs, forums, member profiles, etc) displays as attached.

I'm stumped what it could be. Any ideas?

Just on the above problem, I've just noticed that the header information between a CMS page and a forum page is completely different. The forum page is missing most of the header information and the xmlns define is different. Nearly all info from the xmlns define to the title is missing. Here's my headinclude from the style. Some more research, some more information. It seems that "headinclude" is not being included correctly into the pages. If I copy / paste the contents of "headinclude" directly in place of the include location (ie: in "FORUMHOME") then the page displays correctly.

It's only when the below is called from any page template other than CMS pages (ie: "DOWNLOADS2"):

Okay I've fixed it. I had thought the vb3 AME was disabled but it wasn't. Disabling the old AME fixes the problem.

Is there any way you could please, to be able to add in custom fields?
I really need a field for "version", that would become part of the browsing listings.

Also, the "date" field.... is that showing the date it was created or updated?
I modify a lot of downloads frequently, and I need the date to show when I update them, otherwise the actual creation date will throw off all my users.

Right now I am forced to put the version and update date within the download description, which is becoming such a pain :(

I have recenly removed the "Moderation Queue" setting because it looks like to the members that they may not add files to the download section.

I have read in a search that I did here on this mod that there as some work to be done and that it will be in the next release.

Is there any way to instead of telling them that they dont have permission, but instead tell the members that their file is in the "Moderation Queue" and will be approve or declined shortly?

A problem I am guessing is in the XML file, but not sure what to change...

We have VBAdvanced Links installed which changes the directory to /links/index.php

When trying to navigate to downloads using the navtab, this subdirectory gets transfered over to the address that the navtab uses for Downloads (/links/downloads.php) rather than just /downloads.php.

I see in the xml file a "add a downloads tab" template but no href addresses. I also see a "navbar link" tamplate but not sure if this will change the navtab?

Where do I go and what to change to correct this so when we navigate from Links to Downloads using the navtabs it does not inject the subcategory /links/ in the address and give us a 404 error???

To add images to Categories that you already have:

AdminCP -> Downloads -> Categories -> "Edit a Category" -> Select your Category to edit, from the drop down menu -> Press 'Edit Category" button.

Add the URL to the bottom box, marked 'Image', click on edit category, and your done.

If you want to add them to a new category - You just add the URL the same time as adding one.

It was corrected by adding a trailing slash on import directory.


I do wish I could change the date files are added. I am importing files that were uploaded all the way back to 2001. I would like to have reflected that. Was going to do this via the database, but the date is not in a format I understand.

The dates are in unixtimestamp format. This will give you the actual date of the files

select FROM_UNIXTIME(dateadded) from YOUR_PREFIX_dl2_files

To update , you can use

Having some problems with the Downloads and I'm on 6.0.5. Basically a members secondary usergroup allows them to download products but when they are logged in and click on the latest downloads in the blocks or the downloads.php, they get:
"Invalid File ID."
Then it redirects them to downloads.php where they see no files at all. I've checked the permissions and everything looks good. One of our members has two different secondary groups that allow them access to the same download categories, not sure if there is a conflict there.

It is working because as administrator I can see the downloads and it does not tell me Invalid File ID. Thanks for your assistance.

It would be nice to be able to add a searchable field on the description page. The way this is now, you either have to bury this field in the description where it will likely not be seen -- or create a whole new subcategory.

I'm not sure how hard this would be to add. I appreciate the MOD. This would just be very helpful.

Nobody commented on this. Looks like this mod doesn't currently consider both primary as well as secondary usergroups, which will not work for my needs. So in the end, I had to make a slight mod to a few of the exclude functions in class_downloads2.php. At least I can now control the main permissions via the primary usergroup, and then manage category access via the secondary usergroups. This appears to be pretty effective. Great mod Jelle!

Tag system: admins should be able to "pre-configure" tags. User groups could also be forbidden from creating or assigning tags.
Featured items: Admins will select featured items from all categories, and they will be listed separately. This could also be achieved by tag system as well. Admin creates "Featured" tag, and forbid users assign tags to the downloads.

I've imported my whole DBMan database (via csv) into this DownloadsII. However, the DBMan didn't keep up with file size and it did not identify the users by ID.

Would anyone be willing to point me in the right direction on how to whip up a quick php file to update these?

I need to see if a user exist - and then insert their ID # on that download - or insert a zero and then skip to the next if they don't exist.

I also need to go to the file directory, check the download size and then insert the size into the table.

I've got nearly a 1000 files to do this with, and I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I think I could do it with a helpful hint - or two.

Hey RS_Jelle, Ive extended your mod to support the rack space cloud file cdn:
Categories can be marked as cloud containers
These categories then have a setting to specify the cloud container
When viewing cloud container categories, new "Cloud Upload Queue" is displayed"
A parent category can be set to consider children categories as virtual cloud folders within the set container, or separate containers
Added two new fields to download settings in admincp: Cloud Files' Username, and api key.
added a page for direct file calling (we use it for source server redirects, so request's can come in directly for files and be treated as folder structure)
Optional, can enable a ip filter list 9.htaccess file)etc, let me know (via pm) if you want the files to officially integrate into the mod.

With the sad retirement of the Links/Downloads Manager I am contemplating migrating fully to this addon. A couple of questions:

1. Would it be possible to create a simple XML import tool that allowed the user to create an XML file and bulk upload a bunch of downloads that refer to external links?
2. Would it be possible to make both Download items as well as just plain Links? That is to say that I've noticed that I can put a URL in the download from link field to refer to a specific web URL and it functions properly but it would be nice to allow the user to either upload a file or simply add a link to the Downloads DB.

An option to subscribe to a download, so that users who comment/add a file can get email of follow up comments. Ideally a file uploader should get auto-subscribed.

I had a similar problem. In Downloads II > Extensions > Mime Type and Headers, I put "application/pdf" for the pdf file extension (without the quotes). In my case, my server logs just said "file not found" or something to that effect and files could not be downloaded. When I cleared the 'Mime Type and Headers' textbox, I was able to download and no errors were logged. I think the problem is that you either need to leave it blank or fill in the entire header string -- e.g. "Content-type: application/pdf" works. It might be good if a future version of this plugin could either add a help button on this field or do some validation on the user input.

I am hosting video files with a different ISP. I can link to them just fine from Downloads II. However, when clicking download it is opening the files. You can right click the download button and "save target as" to save the file. Is there a way to make this the default action when left clicking download?

This is the thing I really don't understand with this mod. I have changed a certain usergroups settings to:

250MB upload limit
250MB download limit
-1 on amount of files

With this usergroup i've tried to upload a 12,8 kb file and it says it will exceed the daily upload limit...

Doesn't make any sense to me :)

While importing multiple files from a folder, it would be nice if it kept that path and create the link to that particular folder and file, maybe it is needed to move them to calculate the size?

Basically, the image is uploaded with no error message, the thumbnail is created, but it is not linked properly, there is no .jpg extension added to the filename and no _thumb.jpg in the small image.

Did I have something misconfigured?

Seems my issue was related to the image filename, it was too long, but now... how can i make the thumb open similar as it does in Minatica.be Downloads, within the same window and showing the zoom pointer on hover?

I put Open file directly in browser to Yes, but it still opens another window, how to configure that part? Can't find anything related. :eek:

I am having problems with quite a few members who keep getting either the please slow down you are downloading too fast message or the message where you have already downloaded your limit of 2 manuals when they haven't downloaded anything. DownloadsII 6.0.6 fixes a profile tab design issue with vBulletin 4.0.8. Next to that, it's now possible to edit comments. There are usergroup permissions to control this. Also two minor bugs are fixed now.
