Rotating Banner System

With the Rotating Banner System software, you may publish literally anywhere standard banners and advertising, with no restriction but your imagination. Unlike many other products, it allows to show an unlimited amount of banners and advertising, which are randomly shown at the places you choose, and you may refer generically to an Ad by using specific placeholders.

Also the management is straight-forward and simple to use. Forum administrators with maintenance rights may add, edit and delete records from the Administration Control Panel (ACP), one of each representing a banner. After saving the new banner settings, they are immediately visible at your board.

Compatibility: from vBulletin 3.6.5 onwards

By the way, I do also install the hack on your boards, but since I am very, very busy, it may take some time (weeks) until it gets done.

Dont wana sound stupid but ive installed this Mod followed everything to the book and cant get any banners to show up anywhere on the forum, not even your 2 default banners are showing up ?

The only bit i dont fully understand is the Horizontal & Vertical Placeholders, ime not sure if i just leave the Default setting in there or not IE:

To see the mod working, place for example in your sign the placeholder @vbbanners@. After saving all your signed posts and private messages show one of the banners.

The placeholders can appear at any place, in your styles, private messages, posts, forum titles, even inside HTML <button> tags. Wherever you insert @vbbanners@, you get one.

If you have multiple placeholders on a single page, all are filled, up to the last available. If there aren't enough banners in your database, the remaining placeholders are removed. Thus if you have banners in your sign and 10 of your posts in a page, but only 3 active banners, only the first 3 posts will show a banner.

As long as the pages are attached to vbulletin, you can insert a placeholder at any place in the vBAdvanced templates or pages. Pages which aren't attached to vBulletin may or may not show banners, depending on how they are embedded.

Pages which are rendered by vBAdvanced should work, while IFRAME inclusions or pure HTML pages most probably won't work.

How can we have this listed on both selected forums and the forum home page? It seems like you can only have one or the other. If you select forum home page "yes" it will not appear on all of the selected pages.

You can embed your banner in a HTML block (Text field). In this case it will do exactly what you want, e.g.

<img src="yourimage.gif" border="0" />

or

If you don't have selected any forum, neither checked the forum home, it will show on all pages and forums.

If you want to show it on the forum home and on a few forums, you must create 2 records of the same banner, but different settings (one for forum home, the other for specific forums).

Very powerful mod.

Took me a while to find the Banner Rotator manager (its at the bottom of the menu). HTML coding of the body was easy (some HTML required) but if you have coded Google adsense in your website before or done basic web design, it is a breeze.

For the benfit of other newbies like myself.
I Added <center></center> to make the ad centered by editing the header template (Styles & Templates > Style Manager > Select Edit Templates from dropdown menu > find "header" template > add the placeholder @vbbanners@ as shown in the online guide "snapshots".

Question

1. Which template do I edit to place an ad below the Nav Bar? I had a look in the Navbar template. I just don't have the knowlege to be sure if its tht right template and where in the template to place the placeholder.

2. Is there a way to display banners in the Forum Home and specific forums? (Ok - my bad, I read a few posts above and created two banner id's one for Forum Home and one for specific forum)

vBulletin attempts to give a hand placing ads, but currently you can fill only a handful of places (style hooks), and by no mean everywhere. Also you need to know how those places are called, and your code needs to be extended each time Jelsoft decides to add a hook somewhere.

Furthermore, you can't use a specifically coded plugin for style hooks in older vbulletin versions. This one (along with other banner systems) runs on 3.6.5 to 3.7.x boards, and does not require a specific style layout.

Say I only want to have one banner on the page, but I have 3 or 4 separate banners that I want to rotate on that location, how do I do that? I don't see any settings within the admin area about rotating, etc. Just how many shows before it stops showing. I'll keep looking, but any responses or help is greatly appreciated!

It has worked out over time, that viewing the banner in-place creates more problems than it solves. I will however think about a link and popup window for one of the next releases.

I am just installing this program and while I am working on it I thought I would make a comment while in progress.

I am failing to see a good system for navigating banners. It actually took a bit to realize I could navigate saved banners with the arrows. For whatever reason they didn't seem to work in the proper manner at first.

The point is, I think it would be nice if, after clicking on "Manage Banners" a list of banners would appear that linked to the edit banner pages.:up:

Then, if I am on the right track, it would be nice to be able to change the order that the ads are displayed in, :) because I am finding that I am building several banners for one advertiser in a row then moving to the next advertiser and fear they may not be a random display.

I realize this system is currently developed for VBulletin, but I would like to use it on other pages too. It may be nice to have a selection in "Forums" which could be used for the banner to respond to. Maybe a tutorial on how to call the script from another page.:)

It would also be nice to know how to insert the tag so that only certain usergroups get the banner.

I am using it slightly differently, I have only 2 ad locations I want to show rotating banners, a 235x60 in the header and a 468x60 in the footer.

I use the standard Horizontal placeholder "@vbbanners@" for any header ads, and the "@vbbanners_vertical@" for any footer ads, ticking "vertical" in the ad set-up, even though the ads are not vertical it seems to work.

This way however you would need also vendor handling. As vBulletin works, there is only one vendor: the board owner, and all subscription payments go to one account. Also there is no way to tell the number of items you buy, all vBulletin subscriptions are limited by time only and each additional subscription adds only time.

To make it work for more vendors, the whole payment and subscription should work differently, more like in an auction. Then it would be also more easy to define other criterias, such as how many banners you could insert for the chosen period. Well, if the vendors are listed in a similar table as the banners and the rules are not too many, it should be possible to make it. The payment ID returned to both the board and the buyer will make that a sort of ticket, to allow one or more banner uploads.

The problems I see are the setup which is left to the buyer and the possible implications if they are using scripts, like messing up your pages or installing spyware and worms. Maybe scripts shouldn't be available, right? :)

I believe at the current state of brain storming, best is to go by steps and use thus the inbuilt subscription feature. I'm not sure yet how to upload the banner and make sure it will be only one at a single time - maybe using the user profile.

After changing the placeholder, also the styles' placeholders must be edited accordingly, else it won't find any to replace and thus would not show anything.

If the classifieds script does not use the standard closure of vbulletin, you will not see ads on those pages. With the suggested changes, you will not see the placeholder though, and still show ads on your forums.

Sorry, the rotating banners won't work with CSS. For use with CSS, you could use only static banners or a script made specificly for CSS image replacements, which is however not supported by all browsers.

A script replacement in CSS would read like:

With vbAdvanced there is no additional work to do. Other CMPS may or may not work, depending whether they load the vBulletin engine or not. All non-vBulletin pages must load the vBulletin engine and call the global_complete hook in order to render the rotating banners.

Sorry, the rotating banners won't work with CSS. For use with CSS, you could use only static banners or a script made specificly for CSS image replacements, which is however not supported by all browsers.

A script replacement in CSS would read like:

With vbAdvanced there is no additional work to do. Other CMPS may or may not work, depending whether they load the vBulletin engine or not. All non-vBulletin pages must load the vBulletin engine and call the global_complete hook in order to render the rotating banners.

I just had my guy install the rotator it it is great!The idea I had about mixing it with the subscription seems to bee too much.
I am wondering however if you would be willing to make a couple of changes to the mod.

1. It would be nice to have a common page banner manager where all the banners were listed. Rather than scrolling through each of them, if we could see all the banners and the peramiters of the variables entered it would be awesome. So basically the one page would display:

The product was predisposed to send email. It is a feature which has been asked, but is currently not implemented.

When it will be ready to use, the upgrade of a future release will add the task during installation.

Nop, it is not rotating. I've uploaded 2 banners and it is showing up always the first one, every time I refresh the page or load a different page.

Or perhaps am I doing anything wrong?

For the first banner, I did this:

Rotating Banner System - Manage Banners - New

then I enter the details and Save. The ID is 4

Then I go to the template and place this, where I want the banner to show up:

@vbbanners_vertical@

Then for the second banner I do exactly the same and the ID is 5, but this time I do not place the "@vbbanners_vertical@" because one is already there. Or should I put "@vbbanners_vertical@" twice on that template?

They do rotate. The most common error is not to check the "vertical" option for vertical banners. So if you have 1 banner with the "vertical" option checked and 7 not, only one banner will show at the @vbbanners_vertical@ placeholder.

By the way, there is only one Horizontal Placeholder: @vbbanners@

And one Vertical Placeholder: @vbbanners_vertical@

And I have 4 places to put banners: 2 at the top (horizontal), one side banner (vertical) and one at the bottom (horizontal).

If someone wants to have his banner to be shown only at the bottom, how can I configure RBS for this purpose? Because otherwise the banner might be displayed at both the top and the bottom randomly.

It may be a future decision to add more placeholder types, but at the very moment there are only two available. If you have only banners of one kind (e.g. horizontal), you may use the vertical placeholder for banners at specific locations.

Right. That one applies for a bug, which will be fixed in the next release. If you switch click tracking off, and a full URL is specified, it should work though.

The Text field simply hold any kind of HTML, including adsense or similar scripts.

If you have a simple image banner, such as the purple banner on your site, you place in the Name field a message which shows as a tooltip, URL field the destination (e.g.: http://www.purple.com (http://www.google.com/)/), and in the Image field the banner image URL (e.g.: http://www.norcalaircooledgroup.org/forums/banners/purple.jpg), which will be then inserted into the <img src ...> tag, and leave the Text field empty.

For getting the click counts to work, it is necessary to enable click tracking (on each banner). Click tracking works for image banners only. It also adds a little overhead on each click, since the database must be opened and a query is issued.

Yeah, I see: place the insidebox URL into the URL field. Then put the full or partial URL of inside.jpg into the Image field, and put Inside XBox 360 into the Name field and delete the content of the Text field. Set also the target in the Banner Options (bottom) to _blank (default). Then click tracking will work, promise :)

Use the Text field only for banners which can't be expressed as images, such as Google AdSense scripts and similar, or images which have a very specific format or additional information the standard mode can't show.

You may setup a banner with the Forum Home option checked. This banner will show on all pages which have no specific forum id, such as the vbAdvanced home. If you have no Forum Home banners you are set.

However, if you have banners which show on all forums (no forum selected) or Forum Home, they also will appear on those pages. Thus, you must assign explicitly the forums to all banners in order to avoid they are appearing at unwanted places.

Anyway, it is currently not possible to assign a banner to a specific place (and probably never will be). The only possibility would be to "abuse" the vertical banner placeholder for telling it should be used in vbAdvanced instead elsewhere. This requires you don't have vertical banners in Forum Home, or vice-versa.

You can use as many placeholders you wish. You only have to ensure they are not messing up your page.

For example, if you have two wide banners horizontally next to each other, they may stretch the page a little ;)

You may use as many @vbbanners@ placeholders you need in a single page, and the procedure will show for each instance a different banner - if there are so many in your database (else blank).

Currently there are no other placeholders available, but you may user the vertical one if you have only horizontal banners (or vice-versa), instead.

Are you using scripted or image banners? If scripted, they may show up the same but because of the underlaying script, which decides to show two times the same banner (should not occur with Google).

And of course, if you have the same banner more times in the database, it will be chosen, too ;)

Well, the only remaining point is that at some place vbCMS or vBulletin load all the plugins two times.

If you edit the plugin, you may wrap the function with the following:

If you use different placeholders, for example a HTML comment (replace default both in your templates and options):

The click checks apply for images only. Scripts won't work since it is not possible to wrap arbitrary scripts in a box and call the wrapper without creating a lot of problems, both to browsers and sources.

How empty is it (white page)? You should get the vBulletin Options listed, with specific options for the banners. If this doesn't work for some reason, please try to re-upload the files which come with the product, making sure they are replaced/uploaded correctly (as notified in the help).

However it is more likely something is wrong with your board, since the options are loaded from the database and have no specifically associated file, except for standard vBulletin scripts of course.

If your different theme is assigned to different forums, you may create a banner set which is shown only on those.

Otherwise, you may use the horizontal banners for one theme and the vertical ones for another. Of course, you will not be able to have horizontal and vertical banners, but only one type.

For images like in your example, the first solution is always reccomended. Use the second format only for banners which can't be expressed as a simple picture, e.g. Google AdSense scripts, Flash animations, Streaming video or similar.

It is choosing the banners randomly from the available, and the overall distribution is pretty even. Over long time, you will see it yourself from the impression count of two or more banners registered in the same moment. :)

I'm sure you are making something wrong. If you replace the cpnav_rbs.xml file, nothing can go wrong with vbSEO!

Well anyway, if the plugin works and just the options from the menu aren't, you can use the options from the vBulletin Options list instead. I'm out of options, sorry ;)

I never said vBSEO was affected. It was the menu to the left which was affected and replaced by those weird characters the place where it should be "vBSEO" menu option.

And also the Rotating Banner System menu option, again, from the menu to the left, was missing.

I did exactly what you told me: to upload the XML file via FTP. Once there, that issue came in. Once I uploaded the backup file, everything was normal again. I can provide you with detailed snapshots, step by step, to prove my issue, if you want.

RBS itself is working fine, so no worries. :)

What I want to do is have google ads showing to guests only, but once registered then you will only see the normal sponsor/advertising banners?

Yes sure - logo rotating works just as banner rotating. Just replace the logo image HTML in your header template with @vbbanners@, store at least one logo and you're done.

I'm not good enough in design to tell the exact way how to do it. Basically you have to move your main page into 2 columns, one of which works as the placeholder for the banners.

Search for the placeholders @vbbanners@ and @vbbanners_vertical@ in your templates and remove them. That's all, unless of course you have made other modifications.

The product itself does not add itself into any template, all changes are made directly by the forum owner. If it wasn't, I would have had a hundred issues already, since people are moving the banners many times before they fit, and actually it was designed as a simple addon leaving all the freedom to its users ;)

As for your problem, it looks like as if you have made a change to the vbadvanced module regarding the forum home page. And generally to the logo section in the header template. If you have saved your template changes in the style history, you should be able to roll back without problems.

For the logo, it is likely you have filled ad_header_logo with something empty, such as a table with 50% or 400px width, else I couldn't explain the gap. And maybe that's all.

If you never used the placeholders the plugin was never working, and thus could not cause any problem. In this case you need to undo the changes you have applied to your styles.

The banner records you are talking about are stored in the database only and have no effect on your board until you show somewhere a @vbbanners@ placeholder. Only then the plugin activates and replaces @vbbanners@ with a banner contained in the database (if any).

If this option is on, the specified email addresses in each banner record are notified about banner events. The time intervals and notification types depend upon individual Scheduled Task settings.

Hi,

Just to report that the upgrade from 2.0.6 to 2.0.9 messed up the whole thing. The banners went like crazy, showing up at the top, even the vertical banners. It seems the upgrade is affecting the main template somehow.

I had to downgrade back to 2.0.6 to get this fixed.

im not sure if its the ad ID 4 and over ( ie ad id 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, etc.) that is the problme and are not showing , or if there is a differnet issue going on

I believe you just installed the product and attend the ads to appear magically on your forums. Well, this isn't the way it works ;)

Install the product and keep the preinstalled ads. These are guaranteed to work everywhere. Then, write a message in a test area, and put @vbbanners@ inside the text. After saving, there should be a banner. If there isn't any, you are doing something wrong, e.g. check the spelling, verify you actually have active and enabled banners for the desired placeholder, refresh the page.

Once the ads start to show up, refine with user groups and forums selection, until you get what you want. Also you may add your own banners and copy some of the settings.

Then, add to your templates the @vbbanners@ placeholder, or the placeholder you have defined in the Rotating Banner System Options.

I'm running 3.6.12 and v2.0.6 of your hack.
You may define a different placeholder in the options, such as a HTML comment, e.g. <!--banner-->, which is then hidden to browsers, if the banner plugin isn't called for some reason. You will have to change the placeholder in the options and in the templates to make this work ;)

There are currently only two subsets supported, horizontal and vertical banners.

However, you may choose forums and usergroups, and thus refine your banner locations up to a high degree.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you intend to hide ads from ad blockers, this may be done only by intelligent scripts. I doubt however simple image ads would be rejected by any software I am aware of. Image banners are simply inserted into the templates, as if they were any kind of picture.

Could you please attach a snapshot of each kind of ad (horizontal, vertical) you have been setting up and which creates the problem? I'm unable to reproduce the problem.

There is already a filter against showing one ad more than once on any page. If you have the same ad inserted multiple times in the database though, you will have to disable the ones you wish not to show, or apply different rules.

I have not changed the Options - it still has @vbbanners@ and @vbbanners_vertical@ yet everwhere that I have @vbbanners@ it's pulling my Vertical images and everwhere that I have @vbbanners_vertical@ it's pulling my horizontal images. This ONLY started after I added @vbbanners_vertical@ - when I was only using @vbbanners@ it was showing the correct horizontal images.

Edit: Easiest fix is to switch the variables in the Banner Options:
Change Horizontal Placeholder to @vbbanners_vertical@
Change Vertical Placeholder to @vbbanners@

Now it's working correctly.

This ONLY started after I added @vbbanners_vertical@ - when I was only using @vbbanners@ it was showing the correct horizontal images.

Edit: Easiest fix is to switch the variables in the Banner Options:
Change Horizontal Placeholder to @vbbanners_vertical@
Change Vertical Placeholder to @vbbanners@

Now it's working correctly.
I've tried yesterday to simulate and I didn't succeed in reproducing the problem. @vbbanners@ shows to me horizontal banners and @vbbanners_vertical@ vertical banners with no exception.

How many banners do you have of each kind?

I think I found the problem. From the moment you disable or delete the samples and add first vertical, then horizontal banners, you run into this problem.

Ah - yeah that would probably be it. I actually deleted all the samples.

Here's my site with a demo of it. The horizontal banners under the MiFbody.com logo and the banners down the right side of the page are all done through this product. Works great - I really like the impressions and clicks logging!

I'm not sure what you mean. If you intend to hide ads from ad blockers, this may be done only by intelligent scripts. I doubt however simple image ads would be rejected by any software I am aware of. Image banners are simply inserted into the templates, as if they were any kind of picture.

Well, you may use a GIF image called pincopallino.gif and avoid names and labels which are automatically banned from AdBlockPlus. The replaced HTML is absolutely neutral and can't be identified. Unless of course you are using scripts which are recognized. In that case you may try to encode the contents, but a clever blocking script gets around that, too. ;)

If you search in the phrases for the rbs_rotating_banner_system variable and it's there, you may try to use the US translation with the appropriate text. If it isn't there, create the phrase in the GLOBAL space.

Generally, this problem has appeared relatively often and after long research it seems to depend on the language system which has a modified master language table, such as direct modifications or incorrect date/time assignment. It is particularily true on systems which host also translated boards and which language tables contain assignment errors or foreign phrases (e.g. vBulletin product phrases).

On some systems the problem has disappeared after reinstalling the Rotating Banner System product from scratch. If you have already banners inserted, make a backup of the rbs_banners table and restore after installation.

We can talk about this extension but it can't just be implemented - careful planning is required in order to keep it a reliable software solution.

Currently I'm using a TINYINT(1) field to distinct between 2 locations, and have 2 placeholder options available. It can't be an infinite number of locations, else it becomes difficult to handle the options. You'll agree with me, once there are more locations available, people would like to have any number, though. ;)

You could globally replace "rbs" with something else. Needs to be applied to all file contents and file names. That could do the job I think.

Please create a new post and paste into the message body @vbbanners@. A banner must show up. If it doesn't, reinstall the product and keep the sample banners and retry, until the banners are shown.

Once they are on-line, add @vbbanners@ to your templates where you wish to see banners. Once they show up, you may add, delete and change the conditions of a banners at your wish. In the attached help file you may find addtional information of the fields and how to setup your system in order to make it work.
