Can't seem to get this to rotate for nothing. I have also clicked vertical for each banner I add. It only shows the first banner and thats it. I know its probably something small that I overlooked but can't seem to figure out what. Thanks! Great mod btw..

Try to add just another banner (different image) with the same settings as the one you see. Then, adjust the options to your wishes.

I suppose you have only one single banner which can actually show for the given options, and thus you'll see only that. There are many factors which may limit a banner to show in certain places. When starting, best practice is not to select any option and work with the basic default options. Also keeping the samples is a great help. ;)

I'm sure it would, but then it won't be a simple tool any more, since the infinite number of possible areas would not allow to use the standard options, nor understand on the fly where what is shown.

For the moment I believe the winning applications are those which remain simple to maintain and address a large number of users. Such an addition would create very small benefits to most of the users, but add a great number of additional problems.

I have a limited extension in mind and scheduled, though, for up to 10 different locations, which is about the upper limit I would ever suggest to use, and which would just fit into the vBulletin options ;)

Reinstall the product.

If you have data stored you would not like to loose, make a backup of the rbs_banner table first, reinstall and then restore this table.

Anyway it shouldn't go all italian unless you have installed and chosen to use Italian as the default language ...

Mine is now Italian to!!!

Reinstalled 3 times, rebuilt the only language, ENGLISH, on the forum... still shows up in Italian... The phrases in the ENGLISH section are well.... english...

I have added in the English Help / Installation the following note which reads:
Please note that the lang-it-rbs.xml file is intended to use only on boards where the Italian language is installed and used as default.

Yeah, I'm aware of this problem.

It has worked out, it needs a final user to write the resume and additional information, since the point of view is always very different. Starting from the terms up to images, the sequence of actions and setup are generally so different, it can't be fully percieved by a developer (the more expertise the larger the gap) ... :)

You may use and show your own HTML for your banners.

I believe I'm not going to embed automatically SWF banners, since the HTML embed tag is not W3C compliant and the object tag only half way supported by all browsers.

You will have to change your templates accordingly. This plugin does not insert banners by itself, but substitutes a placeholder found in the templates or text whenever it finds one and the rules are appliable.

If the banner selection criteria is correct (enabled, not expired and visbile in that area), it really should work. Does it work when you insert @vbbanners@ in a new message? Do you already show a banner on this page? If yes, do you have enough banners in the database to show? Remember that no banner is shown more than once on a single page.

So, I have a Question now...

I using this mod to show banner of sub-forums on Navbar but I want also use this mod to have banners (comercial ones) under first post... Is any way to divide "groups" of banner to show in different places? (I mean for example: "@vbbanners@" and "@vbcomercialbanners@ "can you helpme?... thank you again!!

This is an issue which appears on a few systems but until now I don't know why, nor how to reproduce. It seems to depend on the & character in XML files and how servers read. I've got this working fine under 3.82 and just got it to work with swf files (have to put all the bits in the forum root for some reason, didn't like referencing a subfolder path).

But, it's doesn't seem to be tracking clicks on swf's. Ideas? Thanks!

Your quoted code is showing an extra line before the final script. Find out why (possible an unorintable character such as <Ctrl>+char?). That's probably why it isn't working for you. AdSense code is working just fine for me and 3.82.

New release: Now we have up to 10 locations, although it may be possible to extend the feature to an almost unlimited number. However, for performance reasons and also for easier maintenance and user feedback, it is currently limited. During the upgrade process, also an expired test banner (Shopping Ad) will be disabled, since it may produce blank entries.

The screenshots are not updated yet, since the upgrade is only necessary for handling more than 2 locations.

With version 2.1.x the limit is bound to 2 different locations, with 2.2.x the limit is bound to 10 different locations, and the number of visible items in your database.

Thus you may have as many banners on a single page as you wish, as long as no banner has to be loaded more than once, because the banner system will show each entry not more than once on a single page.

In other words, if you wish to show 100 banners at each page, you need at least 100 entries capable to show up, and of course, 100 placeholders in your template.

Certainly. If you have AdSense and several other banners in rotation in a specific location, you can also increase the frequency of a banner (e.g., AdSense) by adding additional copies of that banner into the rotation pool.

It should really work even on an empty table. If it doesn't, you need to probably reinstall the product.

A better way in any case is to disable the sample banners. They are handy for testing ;)

If you insert the flash in the image field, it works half and half. The Flash needs to have the right link inside, else it won't work.

If you prefer to use the code, you also will need to cover the flash with a transparent gif, as shown here. Then you may use a different link, but still you will have to code each Flash banner manually.

New release: Now we have up to 10 locations, although it may be possible to extend the feature to an almost unlimited number. However, for performance reasons and also for easier maintenance and user feedback, it is currently limited. During the upgrade process, also an expired test banner (Shopping Ad) will be disabled, since it may produce blank entries.

The screenshots are not updated yet, since the upgrade is only necessary for handling more than 2 locations.

I believe this cannot be done anyway. Neither vBulletin nor the banner system are aware on which browser window they are shown - you may show vbulletin forums on a popup window if you like.

But if you have a way to decide which browser windows are what, you just insert the placeholder in the appropriate template and the banner should look up (if the whole thing is also connected to vbulletin).

The reset button works only for changes you have made before saving. It is not a history button to retrieve changes once you have saved. If you need such a thing, it possible to restore the rbs_banners table from a recent backup.

When you delete an ad, the same ID is never used again for a precise reason: the ID field is a counter field and increments (adds 1) to each new entry, no matter how many have existed before. If I would reuse ID's, a link to an old banner may still work and falsify the statistics.

And by the way, I would really appreciate if you would keep banners 1 and 2 in place, since they are proven to run and provide me a minimal income (like about 10 $cents daily fom all installations) in order to maintain this plugin.

If you have the placeholder code in the home page and the product is enabled, there should no placeholder to be found, and in fact there isn't any. This means it does work, but your rules do not fit the condition to show up in home.

Can you please enable one of the standard (first two) banners and check them out before setting up rules, please :) Those two are guaranteed to run, and if they aren't, something else isn't working as supposed to. Once you get them run, you may try your own ;)

I've overseen the 2.1 note, sorry. You will need to use @vbbanners@ placeholders. As the included help tells. Version 2.2 uses the new placeholder format (HTML comments).

I think that is called OpenAds (OpenX for Drupal) ... it has some nice features, but was also terribly difficult to manage at the time I was looking into it...

Up to 10 new locations means, that you are not bound to 2 locations as before: horizontal and vertical only.

If you have 10 banners in your database, and 10 @vbbanners@ on one page, all banners are shown, but none of them more than once.

You need to upgrade only if for example you have 10 styles and you want to show on each style a different banner set.

The rotation is evenly divided by the number of entries in the database at each page visit.

If you have 10 entries and 1-10 placeholders of the same type, over time the 10 banners will be rotated almost evenly (have about the same impression count).

You may try with an IFRAME and a custom coded vBulletin page, which refreshes at certain times. However this product is not intended to dynamically rotate banners while the page is shown.

Besides a significant load to your server it would not add a real value to the visitors, who would see disappear a banner which they eventually chose to click. IMHO

Installing the Rotating Banner System software is simple. First, upload all files and folders you find in the upload folder to your forum home (where you find the index.php file of your forum).




Then login to your vBulletin board, and install a new product. Browse for the product's XML file (product-rbs.xml), and select the overwrite radio button, if you make an upgrade or want to replace an existing installation.




After clicking on the Import button one new table is created: [prefix]rbs_banners. Also a few default banners will be inserted. These records can be deleted or overwritten. If you leave them inserted and enabled, our advertising will be shown to your forum users, and we receive a little fee for each click your users make. It is a simple way to passively contribute to keep this software constantly updated.




Please note that the lang-it-rbs.xml file is intended to use only on boards where the Italian language is installed and used as default.

There is no easy way to install this on a simple HTML page. You may try to include a specifically created php script via IFRAME, though.

You can add, enable, edit, delete and list banners from the Admin CP, Menu - (at bottom) Rotating Banner System.

If you can't see the entry, you are probably not having maintenance rights. The "Rotating Banner System" Menu should be found just below Maintenance.

OK!!!!! There is no doubt that you are one smart dude, and have given all of us a useful mod and I wish you continued success in everything you do, but you missed one small detail, you need to log out and log back in to see the menu option.

In the description of the plugin it says:

Compatibility: from vBulletin 3.6.5 onwards

Before 3.6.5, there was some problem with correctly loading and installing the XML, due to an additional voice and generally because of the new plugin system, introduced in 3.6.0 and fixed in 3.6.5.

It may be possible you need to logout and login on 3.6, or simply refresh, I can't remember. It is years ago I've the last time looked into it. Anyway, the code changes are not such I would suspect a broken compatibility. I'm happy you can see the menu entry now, and add your own banners ;)

I have added a hotfix for 2.2.1 which saves the Max. Clicks value correctly. Thanks for dicovering this bug ... seems that nobody ever used it :)

The only affected file is admin_rbs.php in your forum/admincp folder.

For the rest I have verified (once again) that the product runs perfectly well on 3.6.8. Due to a refresh problem, after the product installation it is necessary to reload the whole page in order to view the menu entries at bottom. ;)

It does indeed work. I just checked it a bit, and I'm not positive that setting the Max to 0 works right, so to be safe, I just put it at 1M. I'm busy adding the banners before I start replacing the system that I have. Will post back when I have a chance. I have successfully got this mod displaying a banner in the header of my forum, but i would like it to display in the footer of each page too.

I have tried to edit footer, forumdisplay templates etc but it doesnt work, could someone give me step to step info on how to add a banner to footer of all pages please?

I've added my banners and things are looking good. JFYI, the click counter didn't appear to be working as expected, I had the "limit" set at 0, when I make it 1M it appeared to count. I have only tested that a couple of times, while checking the links and getting the banners loaded. I'm thinking that it has to do with "refreshing" like seeing the menu correctly needed logging out and back in.

As I also remember reading some previous posts, there was a discussion whether the banners rotated without "refreshing" the forum page. In my case it does appears to need the page refreshed, to bring up a different banner, which BTW is fine with me.

If you insert the flash in the image field, it works half and half. The Flash needs to have the right link inside, else it won't work.

If you prefer to use the code, you also will need to cover the flash with a transparent gif, as shown here. Then you may use a different link, but still you will have to code each Flash banner manually.

I have been messing with this trying to get it to work, and one thing, in the 2nd div line did you get the dimensions backwards? When I use this on my page, the banner is off to the right almost off the page, with about 10% showing. (my banner is on the right side of the pages.

I'm not understanding Reset Notifications, does this reset the counters, i.e. at the end of the month after a report has been sent?

If not have you thought about being able to reset the counters i.e. at the end of the month.

Clicks are counted only on "image" banners, and only if click tracking is enabled. If the Max Clicks limit is set to 0, any number of clicks are allowed, else, the banner hides when the number of clicks has reached that value. I have tried that also on 3.6.8.

To see the number of clicks (and other data) updated, you need to browse the banners in ACP, no AJAX or other magic there ;)

As for your PM, the error page you show is probably coming from a "missing page". If your rbs_html.php file is in the /forum/ folder, the IFRAME source must read: src="/forum/rbs_html.php". In fact, it does not appear to exist in /

If you need cycling the banners at certain intervals, the above HTML can be changed with a REFRESH meta tag, so your banners would rotate at your refresh rate.

This option resets a flag which indicates the mail was sent to users. This is useful if the mail has not arrived or if you test your settings, in order to repeat the notification.

Thanks again, I found that I had a "line" at the top of the rbs_html.php code. Its always something small. It is working, I just need to "adjust" it a little to fit in the iframe right.

As for "rotating" the banner, there appeared to be some confusion as to whether it rotated on its own, without refreshing the page or when the page was refreshed. On my site it rotates when the page is refreshed which is fine for me.

I was having a problem with the banner lining up in the iframe, and with some outside help found that if you add this in the above code will fix it.

There are many reasons why an ad could not run. But the most frequent reason is, you have not inserted the placeholder in any of the templates.

Also, it may happen you have restricted your banner set too much. Please try the inbuilt banners first, and if they fail, ask here. Also make sure to read the help, included in the package.

As for your PM (please don't post PM's if you can ask here), if you need to show one banner more often than others, just insert duplicate that one for as many times you need. A weight of 1:5 of 2 banners require to insert the second 5 times. You may use this script to duplicate banners 10 times (insert your values first):

Does this work with animated gifs at all? I am using OpenX as the ad server so I just paste the insert code in this module but it only loads animated gifs for a split second than dissapears (the image). I revert back to a jpg and all is fine.... Odd...

Samples 1 and 2 are horizontal banners.

<!--@vbbanners:0@--> is a placeholder which will show horizontal banners, or better, banners which are located at position 0. the Placeholders don't show banners by ID, else they won't rotate at all. At the current state of development, you may use up to 10 different banner locations for any number of banners each. Banner locations 0 and 1 reflect the old positions horizontal and vertical respectively.

I've been assuming that most will NOT work with vB4, given that most of the code has been rewritten. It would be nice if some of the better products and plugins continued to work but I think we're safest to assume that we'll be starting over in that respect.

We can hope that some of the developers of the major add-ons have been updating their products via the alpha-beta releases (e.g., as vBSEO is doing).

After I create one custom usergroup, and make all Admins are leaders of that new usergroup, they are members of that additional usergroup too.

No. The function I use is "is_member_of()", which includes also all secondary group memberships.

If you want to include the banners within CSS headers, you will have to create a script which loads and renders a custom vbulletin page with the banners only. I'm not sure though, if the CSS: url() is capable to load and handle scripts correctly. Please ask a HTML/CSS specialist for advice.

You have to place <!--@vbbanners:%d@--> in the options and <!--@vbbanners:0@--> in the template, in order to:

- make the placeholder dynamic: <!--@vbbanners:%d@-->
- show a rotating banner in position 0: <!--@vbbanners:0@-->

Concept of the placeholder: Common string which may become <!--@vbbanners:0@--> to <!--@vbbanners:9@--> by code. %d is a C++/PHP formatting placeholder which makes it possibile to script numeric formatting instead of hardcoding. Normally, you would simply ignore the presence of this option. Adversely, you would change this option, only if <!--@vbbanners:%d@--> does not work in your system.

Concept of a banner: Numeric constant which represents a number of banners to be shown at a position between 0-9. The script searches for <!--@vbbanners:0@--> to <!--@vbbanners:9@--> (previously inserted in your templates) and replaces each occurence, if available with a randomly assigned banner, to be shown at exactly that position.

This is normally a style issue and I'm not good in HTML. It also depends very on the place. Maybe a align="right" attribute of a div, p or td tag may solve this problem.

Tehere is no such place. Differently from other banner software, this product does not show a banner at a fixed position, but only where you decide.

Thus, you will have to insert a banner placeholder at any template in your forums, in order to show a banner. The most common places are the header and footer, but you may choose other positions in your pages.

"to" comes certainly from your code. Please check your template modifications and your banner code.

If you insert the flash in the image field, it works half and half. The Flash needs to have the right link inside, else it won't work.

If you prefer to use the code, you also will need to cover the flash with a transparent gif, as shown here. Then you may use a different link, but still you will have to code each Flash banner manually.

No, you just use the HTML you normally would use (about similar this one). If your flash contains the destination link, you may use it as if it was a normal image and forget about the HTML.

No way. You may create a SWF wrapper which may redirect to the click tracker though.
You need a SWF wrapper in order to overwrite the URL inside a SWF.
It also works on 4.0 (see here: http://www.vbulletin.it/forums/forum.php)

The hotfix replaces a file with the same name in your admincp folder :)

Well, the very first step is to learn to locate the various forum folders. the admincp folder is typically called admincp and is relative to your forum home, but since you are allowed to change it, nobody else than you really will ever know ;)

I've downloaded the package, checked the product, and it doesn't contain the Italian text.

Probably you did install also the Italian language package, although the help specifies when it should be installed: on Italian boards only. Most probably you will have to uninstall the Rotating Banners Product and install again to get rid of the unwanted text.

Not before version 4.1.x which was announced for great changes in the admin panel to happen. Since it does work in 4.0.0 for now and 3500+ bugs are waiting yet to get fixed, I have really no hurry to do a major change which maybe has to be changed again later.

Once the admin panel changes have finished, this product will be upgraded, in the hope to maintain the compatibility for the large vBulletin version range it still has: from 3.6.5 to 4.0.0

I will continue this product until me or vBulletin dies :p

Please try this: go to the options and change the placeholder to:

Then, make sure you have a working banner (position 0) globally enabled and place:

into a normal post and save (without preview). If the banner works, it must show up. If it does, in version 4.0.1 the pages render differently and maybe HTML comments are stripped off just before printing on screen. If it doesn't show, something has gone lost, but probably will turn back working with 4.0.2

I will not touch the product until 4.1.x, since vbulletin 4.0 has been published before it was truly ready to use, IMO. If I would start fixing now, it would become a nightmare to maintain. Sorry about this.

I'm sorry to hear that. Since they haven't even released 4.02 yet, that basically means 4.x users are abandoned.

I'll keep playing with it to see if I can get it working. Otherwise, no doubt someone else will come up with a 4.x banner rotator sooner than 4.1...

Well, the good news is, it works in 4.0.1, too. I've tried it right now on a fresh installation 4.0.0 and upgraded to 4.0.1 :)

I upgraded from 3.84 PL2 to 4.01 How do we do that? I disabled all add-ons before upgrading and then disabled the hook system. After the upgrade, tuirned the hooks back on and re-enabled the add-ons one by one, checking for error in between. For any add-on that produce an error, I uninstalled it.

This add-on does not result in any errors. I just doesn'r result in any banners either.

If it helps to diagnose, I cannot get anything to display in the "before quick reply" location even using vBulletin's own manually insert ads templates. I've been assuming that's a still unfixed bug in 4.01 (there are a LOT of those).

Yeah, first we have to make sure you show anything else of course, before to blame any plugin ... if you put an 'X' in an ad template and it does not show up, anything else won't either :)

I'm about to release 2.2.2, which adds some of the frequently asked features and which was fully tested on 4.0.1, too. The reason why it still works on 4.x is the fact it does not use any own variables within templates, and because I'm lucky enough to have chosen this road ;)

When I installed the newest version, two ACP menu itmes weren't phrases (see attachment).

I guess I neede to try to find another solution. Pity. This one worked well in 3.84.

Most probably you will have to uninstall the Rotating Banners Product and install again to get rid of the unwanted text.

I uploaded the new 2.2 and over wrote each existing file. Then uninstalled the current product and reinstalled the new 2.2 in english but still getting some other language on about 4 lines. Most are english though.

You didn't upgrade the files ;)

The XML for the menues is twice as large now, due to about 12 new entries. Probably also the other files are not upgraded.

Please check you are actually replacing the files on your server. Some FTP require to first delete and then upload the files in order to upgrade.

Confirmed, works great in 4.0.1. No template editing needed either. Just use the built in advertising system and paste e.g. <center><!--@vbbanners:0@--></center> in the box. I added one at the top and one at the bottom, rotating my ads.
