This fix is only for output a valid w3c urls, i suspect that some clicks were not counted for this reason in some browsers.

I don't believe this makes any difference. All browsers I know handle '&' correctly, and if any, it may be rather a server issue. However, I haven't had ever a failed click with a single '&' on IIS and Apache web servers, but a few with '&' :)

Ok seem to have noticed a small problem in where when you click on a banner it loads the URL that it is suppose to as indicated in the control panel setting for the banner. But at the same time it loads another page that displays just the banner on it's own.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this behavior? It does this same behavior in both FF 3.6 and IE 8.

It works finally for me. So to show random two or more banners I must add every banner in a different position and then i should add the code e.g <!--@vbbanners:0@--><!--@vbbanners:2@--><!--@vbbanners:4@--> or is it possible to put the banners in a single position and to show them random?

Also how can I make the banners to change after x seconds?

Ok just edited a banner to include a URL so that when you click on it you are taken the URL. But for some unknown reason it doesn't open the URL it is still opening the rbs_banner.php?id=5 .

Right, this is probably a combination of things. One of the most common errors is to setup banner features which aren't used or necessary, and thus nothing works. Take it easy, it is meant to rotate banners with the least immaginable efford :)

From your code, I see you have flash banners enabled and also click tracking. But you haven't specified an image, and the landing page is your image. Thus it is absolutely clear a user jumps to the banner ;)

Please disable for a moment all of your banners and create a new one. In the Image field, please paste an URL which goes directly to an image, such as:

http://www.google.com/images/logos/ps_logo2.png

In the URL field, please paste your landing page, such as:

http://www.kawariders.com.au/

In the title, type something which makes sense to users while the mouse is over but not clicked yet. Also, assign a position, if you have more than one. And just save. You should now see the image in your banner location and when you click, go directly to the landing page.

It should now look like (template ad_below_navbar):

Please read the help files and eventually watch the help video in the first post to get an idea what you can do with this product. If you can't get it running, please reinstall the product and try the default banners first - they are guaranteed to work ;)

If you have already remote (affiliate) tracking and you don't need to hide your landing page, you should switch click tracking off, since it adds one more redirect.
If you don't trust your affiliates or you don't have remote click tracking, keep it on.

If the landing page URL contains your affiliate code (normally it does), affiliates will not notice a difference. If your affiliates rely upon the referer and the web server does not redirect correctly referers, you may need to switch click tracking off. This is however a problem you rarely encounter. Please check with your affiliates.

I am running Firefox version 3.6 and Internet Explorer 8 and the two browsers opening at once happens in both of these browsers.

I guess I can try other versions of Firefox by using the portable versions and see what happens. But seeing how the issue happens in both FF and IE I am assuming that the browser is not causing the problem.

The first post location is found in a specific template, but I can't remember which, maybe a designer can help you.

... and it is not possible to click track scripts, unless you are using a cyclic reference to the landing page inside the script to rbs_banner.php&id=N, where N is the banner ID and URL is defined as the landing page. However I haven't tested this extensively and it may not work under some conditions.

In fact, the banner should behave the same way it does inside the wrapper, but it doesn't. Since I have no debugging environment for Flash, I can't tell what is wrong. It might be the wrapper as well, although there is no code which would run a second instance of a browser, but it may be there is hidden code which is compiled into the Flash at some circumstances and we never know ... this applies also to your banner.

At this point, you may still show your banner as HTML, pasting the code into the Text field, but of course, the landing page must be compiled into your banner in order to reply to a click.

Yes, if you compile [forumhome]/rbs_banner.php?id=N as landing page into your banner and set the URL to your final landing page, where N is the ID of your banner.

Those statistics are simply records of clicks on banners and logically split into categories. The meaning is literal and nothing special.

The unwanted results list attempts of clicks by scripts or direct access (no referer) and anything else I may come across in the future.

If you go into the rbs_hits table of your database, you will see what data is collected in order to fill those fields. The rbs_stats.php script is a raw example how to extract and elaborate the collected data. You may adapt it to your needs, making however sure to not overwrite it, when you eventually upgrade the product ;)

Thank you for your reply. I was following the flash and was trying to get the default google banners to work. My impression from the tutorial was that the google banners would work automatically. You will have to make style changes, since there is no "automatic" thing :)

However the default banners work once there is a placeholder in your styles. The flash tutorial is the best to start with - you may use the controls to step slowly through. In the package you also find a PDF file, which contains also a small FAQ. And last not least, about 1000 posts in this thread ... :)

Normally, you would use 1 placeholder for any kind of banner in your pages. This gives you any imaginable number of locations.

The positions 0...9 are merely types of banners, such as horizontal and vertical, although this is not entirely true. It is up to you how to use locations, my tip is to use as little as possible - most of the times, position 0 is just fine, for 1 or 100 banners on your page :)

The installation is as simple as any other product which has additional files, it needs FTP and basic knowledge of installing products.

Just follow the Flash help to get one banner running. Once you mastered that, you will discover the ease of adding more banners to your forums ... just insist and don't give up :)

Here, as an unofficial addon, you get the autorefreshing page (tested). It needs:

- a text editor;
- a refresh time of your choice (see metatag refresh in file, now at 10 seconds);
- a banner location (see placeholder in file, now at position 0);
- at least a banner for that location;
- a global target of a new page aka _blank (RBS options), else you jump into the iframe;
- a template modification for a 468x60 banner:
<iframe src="rbs_iframe.php" align="center" frameborder="0" height="60" width="468" scrolling="no"></iframe>Please note: with smaller banners you get white borders, with larger than the iframe area, they are clipped.

This works all fine and dandy, except it adds the tweetboard in to the frame, and it looks rather silly. Any way to fix this? Are you planning on adding this in to the future releases? options for auto-rotation instead of just refresh rotation?

You will have to adapt the iframe dimensions in order to make it look like it should.

I do not plan to add this to the product, since pages are usually shown from a few seconds to at most a few minutes, and in-place rotating does make no sense. Based on a 1 million page hit history at a commercial site with forums, only a very few pages (1...5) are shown more than 2 minutes. Also it would require me to respond to even more HTML questions which I am unable to answer.

There are no other options to rotate a banner efficiently in-place. You may look for Javascript, but then you will have to handle all devices which have no Java enabled with Content-Refresh anyways.

That looks like a very simple rotation...but I would like to place banners in
certairn areas of the forum, not just at the top, how about placement?

Well, your Flash says: Loading 100%. This means in clear-text, it works, but after loading it does not proceed. I'm unable to tell what your Flash code does. If you need to load external data in your Flash, you maybe run better without a wrapper.

In any case, I am unable to reply to issues which involve Flash and HTML beyond the obvious.

If you have HTML and/or Flash issues, please contact your developer. If testing on a simple HTML page works (as suggested in the help), it must work also in the product. If it doesn't, there is nothing I can do about it.

The URL is the landing page. If it doesn't work, of course the user shows a 404 page. I don't know what you mean with right clicking. When rendered, the HTML and image behaves just the same as a normal HTML code.

The CSS/float issue is because for some reason when I put it in the ad_global_header2 template it's not showing there, and it's not pulling the css properly from the additional.css. It for some reason is showing up in ad_global_header, and isn't listening to the css instructions.

That vBSEO feature (cleanup white space) accomplishes nothing really useful. vBSEO does a lot of things quite well and has a lot of features but just because a feature exists doesn't mean you have to use it. There are several newer vBSEO features that actually have a negative impact on server performance.

The cleanup feature doesn't negatively impact performance but it DOES interfere with this mod and what it does is entirely superfluous. Spiders can navigate white space and ignore comments quite well - that's what they are designed to do - and any impact of comment lines on page load speeds is purely theoretical.

Your choice: Include a vBSEO feature which really has minimal or zero benefit to your forum OR disable that feature and use the rotating banners mod which can potentially have a huge benefit for you and your forum.

For me it was an easy decision.

What did you use to measure page load and come to that conclusion? As I said, what that feature does is primarily compress pages by removing white space and comments and frankly that should have a neglible effect on either SEO or load speed.

I use webpagetest.org, and google's site performance rating to determine what speed my pages are running at.

How do I go about making sure the Gzip is working optimal for Vbulletin?

Your forum is heavily modded but seems to load fairly quickly for me. However, two things I can see right away as problems that may contribute to slow page loads are that annoying vBSEO tweets script and the chat room.

Think about disabling some of your add-ons and rechecking load speeds until you find out what's dragging down your forum.

Also, are you using Google Analytics? Google itself identified that as one of the things slowing my page loads. I dumped it - I get enough stats from AWSTATS anyway.

If HTML comments and this placeholder are not working for you, you can change it in the options (followed by the templates). This argument has been discussed many, many times in this thread and is also handled in the help.

vbulletin's Ad manager adds a level of problems, unless you have rules which are not handled elsewhere. It is much easier just to use the plain templates.

You may use these criteria to filter: id, bannerid, userid, dateline, id, servername, referer.

In order to reset all stats, rather use: TRUNCATE rbs_hits

Please reinstall the product, if you have deleted the preinstalled banners, and use those two default banners (Google AdSense by the way) for understanding how to implement AdSense.

This is unlikely to happen. It is a simple banner system and is also used in large commercial sites. Most of the banners run off-site and are tracked by ad-servers in a more complete way than this one ever will do. :)

Please try a larger range of date/time. Maybe your database server time is outdated. For testing it is always good to take a large range ;)

Il believe sidebars are generated with widgets (?). In this case it may be necessary to create a HTML or PHP widget with a banner placeholder. I can't tell though, it's a designer issue ... :)

Look for this code..

I found out using the <!--@vbbanners:0@--> code will work in the vB Advertising program.

It didn't prior, but for some reason it is now working. I am using the BETA 4.1.2 MS. This may have something to do with it working properly in the advertisement section. It's much better when you don't have to edit code.

You may use for all of these banners a single position. If you have 9 banners to show, and 9 placeholders if the same position, all of them will appear. if you have less, then less and if you have more, they will rotate, showing all at an average medium. And they will also rotate "in place", giving each page a different order of each every time a page loads.

Typically, a 9 banner layout each below each other would look like:

Ok I'm stumped!! I have been running this mod fine for months.
But now I have a problem. I currently run a single ad placement in the header just below the log in as well as the 2 default VB ads under navbar and footer.
What I wish to do is place a rotational ad into a cms widget. I can get the widget to work fine when using:
<!--@vbbanners:0@--> But adding banners to another list and using that instead won't work.
It seems I have the nth placeholder in options set to <!--@vbbanners:0@--> so it wont show anything else I assume?
Reading this thread it seems that should be <!--@vbbanners:%@--> instead but changing that makes the ads in the header disappear.
So It seems I can only show ads in <!--@vbbanners:0@--> with that same code as the nth placeholder.
What am I doing wrong? I use the <!--@vbbanners:0@--> code in the ad location template

I've had this add-on working beautifully from vBulletin 3.x right through to 4.12.

Hwever, I've just added my first Flash banner.

The placeholder for where I've entered the information for the Flash ad is in a centered div. For all of the static banners, this works perfectly.

But the Flash banner, although it displays fine, is left-aligned instead of centered.

Any idea? Is this something to do with the Flash wrapper?

Updated: Apologies. This was my error.

I had a placeholder inserted in the ad template for this position prior to the addition of the "Advertising" feature in the Admin CP. When I updated to use the vBulletin Advertising locations, the older placeholder (which was not centered) got left behind in the original template. Removing the redundant placeholder fixed the problem.

Interestingly, when using regular image banners, this was not a problem. It was only when I tried to use the Flash wrapper that the olde redundant placeholder took precedence over the newer ACP Advertising positions.

I can't see any banners on the online forum. Neither the banners that were installed with this mod.

All seems to work fine inside of the admin. But apparantly there is something I miss that I don't see in the installation instructions.

Next to that I see one of the images you provide with the mod. But I can't find this page and have the feeling it's essential. Where do I look in the templates for this page? I am kinda lost here. *^^* I can't find the template.

can someone point me in the right direction? we just upgraded from 3.6 vb to 4.x vb and now I can not get the ads to work. I am sure it is because the code is now missing from the template, but when I add it back in they still do not show up.

do I need to upgrade my rbs to the latest version? if I do this, will I lose the banners I currently have in there?

...update I went ahead and upgraded to 2.3.1 and still can not get it to turn on. I have tried using the ad manager in vb, i have edited the ad_navbar_below template etc. nothing is working

I just finally got flash banners working on my forum but I was not able to use the embed ot object code. The only way it worked for me was to put the target link and the link to the flash banner in the two text fields:

I haven't had a problem displaying flash banners. That has always worked.

The problem comes when you have a banner in such a position that a menu needs to drop down over them. My modification of the code allows that. But, now when the banner is clicked sometimes two windows open. One with the actual proper link, another with the banner itself.

For those having the same problem I was having with the flash banner itself loading in one window and the link for the banner in another, the attached swf fixes that problem.

In the original swf supplied with the Banner System, there were two items, one with an onClipEvent (mouseUp) and one with an on (release) event which are in effect the same thing, and this was causing two windows to open.

This swf eliminates the onClipEvent (mouseUp) for the banner container and leaves the on (release) for the button. That way click tracking continues to work.

Changes made to flash source:

It's been a long time since I used this mod and with new changes and features I cannot get this to work on my vB 3.6.7 version.

I have tried every imaginable thing and the templates are returning only the raw code of placeholder name.

I'm attempting to move from the built in vb advertising to RBS, and in doing so, I placed the "<!--@vbbanners:0@-->" code right into the "Ad HTML" field of the Previous Ad setup.

Now my ads aren't showing up.

I found out using the <!--@vbbanners:0@--> code will work in the vB Advertising program.

It didn't prior, but for some reason it is now working. I am using the BETA 4.1.2 MS. This may have something to do with it working properly in the advertisement section. It's much better when you don't have to edit code.

This is exactly what I'm trying to do with no luck.

Do I just put "<!--@vbbanners:0@--> " into the code section?

You can't change the hook location. global_complete is the place where all happens, thus changing the hook will not work.

Please try to use a different template just to see if it generally works. It makes no difference to the vbulletin version or suite, we use it on all versions from 3.6.5 onwards and for sure on all 3.8.x and 4.x.x versions.

Great mod. I have this working on my site for the most part but have discovered that it is only showing banner IDs 1 through 8. I have 12 banners currently configured in position0(horizontal) but as I indicated only banners 1-8 are displayed, 9-12 do not ever show up. I am using image banners, no flash. Great mod. I have this working on my site for the most part but have discovered that it is only showing banner IDs 1 through 8. I have 12 banners currently configured in position0(horizontal) but as I indicated only banners 1-8 are displayed, 9-12 do not ever show up. I am using image banners, no flash. I confirmed the image paths for the non-working banners are valid Below is the code I have entered into global_ad_below_navbar template

I know your mod lets me know when the expire, but would be nice to know 1 week in advance so I can contact the payers just before it expires. So perhaps an addition of a date on when to send the alert email out just before the banner expires.

2. I have a section on the right hand side for small adverts, almost like text links. I have multiple ones in this area, all expiring at different times. If I have 3 banners areas on the rest of the page, I may need more than 7 cells for the right hand side text links. If I put them into one cell eg. <!--@vbbanners:2@--> then all these text links will rotate, showing one at a time. Perhaps have an option to show multiple adverts in one cell.

Please use just multiple <!--@vbbanners:2@--> one below each other in order to show more single banners of that group. No banner will show up more than once on a single page, but if you have more instances of the same placeholder, as many banners as may fit are filled from the database :)

I was hoping to be able to use this mod to take over that task. But if the banner stops running at the same time the reminder goes out then that's kind of useless.

You may change the line 31 in rbs_mail_cron.php from:
AND enddate<" . TIMENOW;
to
AND enddate<" . (TIMENOW - 86400 * N);
where N is the number of days you wish to be advised before.

I'm not sure if I will implement this feature.

I have already answered this question: the & amp ; version is not always interpreted correctly by web servers, while the & version always works. I prefer to have a working link over a potentially not working, but HTML compatible one.

If this is an issue for you, you may change the code accordingly for your server.

When Apache will ever arrive to 3.x and HTML 4.x, or whatever will come, will be a de facto standard for all producers in the same manner (no exceptions made), I probably will follow the standards :)

We have this mod running and it seems to work with for the most part, except some of the placeholder templates don't cause the ads to appear, but most do.

We have discovered a major conflict problem with our member's photo library. We use vBPicGallery (http://www.cpurigs.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32) and when y2ksw's banner mod is active, the javascipt screen slide show in vBPicGallery seizes up and stops, plus a random pic from a member's library storage seems to cover part of the screen with some kind of cosmetic glitch.

When we disable y2ksw's banner mod, the vbPicGallery slide show operation returns to normal.

Any ideas on how to resolve the conflict? :confused:

I'm not able to help with style issues. On one site, I have the SHOWTHREAD template modified to show correctly first and last post banners as if they were posts. Maybe this is a useful hint for your designer.

I take note of the feature request, but unless there are very many people asking for this feature, I'll not add it ;)

Please see what the Flash Help does and try to get it working on your site. Probably it is already what you want. Then, when you mastered this step, make your changes and additions ...

If you have a tool which cleans up HTML comments or optimized HTML before output, you may either disable it or change the default placeholder format in the options (e.g. @vbbanners:%d@) and later in your templates (e.g. @vbbanners:0@). However, changing the default placeholders, may show them in your pages if you switch off the product or plugins.

Banners are essentially images. You may try to code your images as HTML and place this code in the Text Field (as shown in the sample banners), but then your click tracking will not work. Alternatively you may try to use the Flash wrapper, which doesn't use the <img> tags, but then it won't work with iPhone/iPad devices and there are glitches with resizing the pages.

If you are new to plugins and products, this is not a good playfield and you are better off with not using it. With uninstalling or disabling the product, you should go fine.

Please try some less complex plugins first and take your time to understand how they work and what it needs. Best practices are to check always new products in a test bed, and if you are unsure about side effects, to make a backup of your database and your files.

And last not least, if a help file is given, read it. In this product there is an extensive help available, and questions may be asked in this forum about almost all issues you may run into. Probably your web service can't access the files you have uploaded by FTP. Please check the owners and access rights.

You mean there is no missing file listed, but it stops there with an error? Could you please try to cut or comment out the part where it makes the files check (on product-rbs.xml)? Maybe it's a unicode problem or something else. However I still believe it's a rights problem.

The movie was a big help. The first thing I discovered is that the default google ad did not work. At that point I uninstalled the banner rotator and another ad program, reinstalled your program and it works like a charm!

They will rotate randomly and they do ;)

You may check this if you disable the ones you have already seen. If they don't show you probably haven't setup the right rule.

You may need to use refresh on yourself, but on a life site the banners rotate very well and almost evenly.

It was answered in the way that each single location can be reused for N banners and rarely you would find enough occasions to use all 10 banner locations together ;)

Pretty much ... it will need several additions in many places and in the end it will slow down the process of parsing the banners into the pages.

You are free to do these changes for your own ... I don't like to sound cynical but 10 locations are really enough if you use them together with all other imaginable filters (usergroups, sections, date/time) :) I agree with you, if you skip these settings and make it a location based setup. But you can reuse one location, for example, to show in each of your forum sections a different and dedicated banner set. Most banner software is location based, and this means you have to create for each banner a location. Here, you can use one location for many different banners and the scope can be different.

I see that you would need at most 2 locations. 1 location for the site advertising and another for the code tag. Since you can define a different banner for each forum section and still use the same location (tag code), each code tag would require just as many banners of that section in the database as you probably may show on a single page. Say you have 10 posts and 5 code tags per page, you may use location 0 five times on the same page and setup 5 different (or same) banners for that forum section, and you are done. If you need the same scheme on another section but different banners, you just filter that section with another 5 banners. And in the same time you have still 9 locations to fit your site advertising much the same way :)

The conditional statement which I posted works in every other case. It is working for rotating banners through a simpler mt_rand () plugin. Though I like your solution better, due to tracking capabilities and better banners management.

Here's a sample link with banner (through mt_rand() plugin) between first and second post.

Note the banner, on navbar is produced by your product but the one between first and second posts is the other plugin. If you have time to check, in that link, I left the placeholder between the banner and the Quick Register form. You will notice it is returning a blank.


I may be wrong so please correct if I am doing so, but my assumption is that the limitation that it should only be run on global_complete hook is maybe causing to stop displaying in postbit_legacy.

The only other Idea is: do you have enough banners in the database? If you have say 1 banner for that page, of course there will not show up another banner at any other same location (I see you use location 2). The reason is, that for showing 2 banners for the same location (2) you need to have 2 banners for that location in the database.

Can the core files of your product be modded to include additional template hooks so banners are shown in postbit_legacy. I am displaying the banners through mt_rand() by hooking them on postbit_display_complete location

I mean, how do you mean to prevent them from using adblockers? How do you even expect there to be room left on a page to display the forum?
