To my knowledge we have not changed anything that should impact the encoding. You're only the second person to report this, the first person was more open to changing their encoding and we're still waiting to hear back from them to find out if that helped.

Meanwhile, we have dozens of people using all kinds of foreign language charsets that have not reported any issues thus far.

Unfortunately at this time there's nothing more I can do :(

You can make the shoutbox show everywhere by following these instructions:

To put vBShout in a custom location, do the following:


Step 1: AdminCP -> DBTech - vBShout-> Instance Management -> [Edit].

Step 2: Change the Auto-Display Shoutbox setting to Disabled.

Step 3: Write down the the Varname setting. For the default shoutbox, it's instance1. The rest of this guide will assume you replace instance1 with the actual Varname if it is different.

Step 4: Enter the Style Manager and add either {vb:raw show.vbshout_instance1} (vB4) or {$show[vbshout_instance1]} (vB3) to the templates you wish the shoutbox to appear in.


Follow these steps as described and you will have total control over the position of the Shoutbox.
Please note that some locations may not work as intended on vBulletin 3.8, and also note that it is not designed to go in the Forum Blocks side-bar (vBulletin 4).

Note that the encoding needs to match the database - if the database is utf-8 then your language should be utf-8, otherwise your language should be iso-8859-1 :)

DragonByte have reason to be carefully with the change of Encoding.... try with this:

I have a VIP forum on my board, and I'd only like vbshout displayed in this one forum. Not on my main page or any other forums.

I've searched this thread and I can see posts saying you need to edit files and put in the id of the forum you want it displayed on.

thanks for your reply! Why were already using vBShout 5 without any problems. Since we updated vBShout because of the security issue, this error appeared.

After taking a look into the database we can say that it is formatted in latin1_swedish_ci and the forum encoding is iso-8859-1. My forum administrator tried a fresh installation in his test forum (on an other server where it was working perfectly before, too), with the same umlauts issue.

In addition, the shouts on the archive page are displayed perfectly.

It's better but still not good ;) My table collocation is latin1_general_ci (all _dbtech_* tables).
After update I don't have special characters like "?" but I see "raw" characters from database.

This the way how polish characters are stored in the database with latin1_general_ci encoding . In older version all works fine (under 6.x).

The latest version seems to mess up all the non-Latin characters in our forum as well, while up till 6.0.4 they were displayed normally.

The database collation and webpage encoding are both set to UTF-8, but the Greek characters all displayed as weird symbols after applying this version. We rolled back to 6.0.4 for now...

Where are you getting this?

A 503 error means you web site is unavailable. This is usually a web host issue. Anyway, you should contact your host because they will be able to help you with this far better than DBTech or anyone one vB.org will be able to.

A small suggestion for future versions: When a chat PM is received, the tab from the sender automatically appears instead of the user having to reply to the chat PM by having to click on the sender's name and having to manually open the tab.

I'm sure many customers/people who use this mod would like this

I meant having the tab just appear with a javascript animation similar to the one used for the shouts. The tab wouldn't be automatically selected though, it would just have an eye catching animation appearing at the top for the user to easily select and chat PM :)

Uninstall and reinstall will not fix the fact that there are / were files on your web server you had not deleted.

Please upload the contents of the upload folder to your forums folder, then uninstall the mod and reinstall it.

Afterwards, please follow the instructions in the file I mentioned in my previous post. This is a critical step and cannot be resolved any other way than to follow those precise instructions :)

the 6.0.7 has files that are renamed so in the older versions such as 5.4.8 you need to take out all those files i believe that in the install text there is the directions on what to remove in there ....

how do you change the backround color?The input area works off of two StyleVars:
input_background and control_focus_background. The first is before the user selected the input area, and the 2nd is while the user is typing.

The actual shouts' background area works off of the postbit_background StyleVar.

vBShout has multiple tables in the database, all of which are removed upon uninstall (if not already removed) and created (if not already created) upon install.

By default in vBShout v6, sound is generated via a HTML5 <audio> tag. Please ensure your web browser is up to date so it can properly process HTML5 tags.

Thanks for the responses, but I'm still can't hear any sound coming from the chatbox. I have the options in the Instance Management turned on, but when people respond in the chatbox there isn't any sound.

Is there anything else you can think of that I must do or need? I'm currently using firefox.

Well it looks like you have the incorrect version in the download listed at the top of the page. Please check to see if it's correct. It looks to be the same files and size. 2008 is the year in the first vbshout.php file in the DL folder. It's listed as [DBTech] vBShout v6.0.7 [Lite]

in the last version you fixed an issue where umlauts/special characters in shouts were shown as a question mark. That now works fine.

Anyway, when a username contains umlauts, there is the same issue. How can we fix that?

Firefox has an error console (Ctrl+Shift+J by default if I recall), which if you click the "Errors" button should show you some JavaScript errors. Right clicking on those errors and copying them lets you paste them in here :)

That's not a vBShout issue, but it may very well be the reason vBShout isn't working.

Try using a default (unmodified) skin, and disable all addons and see if those errors persist.

If they do, please contact vBulletin support, as I have never encountered them before and cannot assist with them :(

I upgraded my vBulletin (4.1.12 P1) and Shoutbox (6.07 Lite) today. For some reason, users that are logged in see all shouts as whatever font color they select for themselves. So if I pick purple as my shout color, everyone's shouts turn purple in my browser. If "joe" picks green, he sees all shouts as green.

Prior to the upgrade, each user could have different colors, helping to discern who was shouting easier. The strange thing is, if I log out (unregistered user), I see the color the other people picked. So Bob's color is red, Joe's color is blue, etc.

My custom themes were destroyed by the vBulletin upgrade, and my users hate bright white, so everyone is using a generic grey generated theme right now until I have time to fix the styles. I'm not sure if this is causing the problem, or if I'm missing some setting in the administration section.

It's not a huge issue, just checking to see if there was a fix I could do to make the different users show up with different colors again.

To put vBShout in a custom location, do the following:


Step 1: AdminCP -> DBTech - vBShout-> Instance Management -> [Edit].

Step 2: Change the Auto-Display Shoutbox setting to Disabled.

Step 3: Write down the the Varname setting. For the default shoutbox, it's instance1. The rest of this guide will assume you replace instance1 with the actual Varname if it is different.

Step 4: Enter the Style Manager and add either {vb:raw show.vbshout_instance1} (vB4) or {$show[vbshout_instance1]} (vB3) to the templates you wish the shoutbox to appear in.


Follow these steps as described and you will have total control over the position of the Shoutbox.
Please note that some locations may not work as intended on vBulletin 3.8, and also note that it is not designed to go in the Forum Blocks side-bar (vBulletin 4).

A very nice chatbox with solid features, thank you! Here are some additions and changes I?d love to see:


Chat Field Orientation: The option to change where the input box is placed relative to the chat output. Right now, the input is in a rather unconventional left-side orientation, when almost every other chatroom and IM program places the input box below the chat output. Having an option for a Left, Bottom, Top, or Right input box would be spectacular!


Selective Archiving: I adore the ?new thread/reply? notifications, but I hate how they end up cluttering your archive! The option to determine what is saved in the archive would be great. I for one would uncheck everything except the actual chat messages.


Selective History: When you first come to the forum, you can see ~20 past messages in the shoutbox, depending on the shoutbox?s settings. This includes shouts and notifications. If the shoutbox hasn?t been particularly active, this history may be nothing more than a list of new threads/replies and ?User has reached X posts!? I only see notifications as useful to those who are currently using the shoutbox when the notification event happens, not for people who arrive a day or two later. That?s what ?What?s New?? is for. This option would work in tandem with Selective Archiving, and might even be the same thing. Despite loving the notification feature, I had to completely turn it off because it was overwhelming the shoutbox, burying people?s shouts into obscurity and isolating possible conversations.


Hook into any/all pages: I know I can manually edit the template pages that I?d like the shoutbox to appear on, but with every vB update comes a template thrashing, so I?d like to keep my template modifications to an absolute minimum. It?d be extremely helpful if vbShout came with a list of pages you could select for it to automatically appear on. Alternatively, a collapsible, hovering frame, as seen in the Ideal Chat mod and Facebook?s chat system, would be just as good, if not better in some cases. I think a chatbox is most effective when users have easy, immediate access to it. As it stands right now, users can either use the shoutbox and ignore the forum, or browse the forum and miss out on the shoutbox. You cannot effectively do both at the same time.

Having the buttons below the input box when everywhere else on the forum, from posting to sending PMs, BB code and other buttons are always above the text field, is confusing and uncomfortable. We used to allow people to determine what pages it should be automatically inserted on, as opposed to auto on index and everywhere else manual, but the volume of support request for detailed instructions as to how to achieve their perfect setup made it way too un-user friendly :(

I don't know why, but this is how mine is appearing. I installed it and made no edits to templates. I did use the repair cache feature twice too.Please turn off IE7 compatibility mode :)

I know I can manually edit the template pages that I?d like the shoutbox to appear on, but with every vB update comes a template thrashing, so I?d like to keep my template modifications to an absolute minimum.

This is a big problem with vB. But, there's also a solution for it. :)

also where in the template should I put that code? After <body>?

You should replace X with the number. If that doesn't work, try $thread instead of $threadinfo.

It would be the same except replacing $thread or $threadinfo with $foruminfo['forumid'] - forumdisplay is the correct template :)

Yea, although i am getting DB errors now because of the server upgrading php past 5.3 (i think)

You have a sidebar in your threads..!!?
If you add the chatbox to the navbar it shows on every page & people can keep up while they read & type posts.

Not sure what mod you use to get a sidebar in your threads, but...
