After I installed the 4.1.4. update the chat (Pro version) doesn't refresh and keeps on hanging saying "loading...". I uninstalled, reuploaded the files, reinstalled but nothing worked. Is it because my design is still at 4.1.0 and templates need to be reverted/updated?

Try turning Automatic Deployment back on, that's the default position and you don't need to add any template code.

Check usergroup permissions in the Instance Management to ensure that the correct view permissions are set.

Well, in my opinion your kinda missing out on an extra revenue stream. I am sure lots of people would pay a fee from what I am reading just to change the layout. I mean I understand keeping that for the pro version as it seems thats the most wanted feature, but thats kinda overpriced as far as paying that much just for a better layout. It is just a shame that the creators do not have any common sence in regard to price.
Really you are losing out on a large revenue stream just because you are trying to be so greedy. vBShout Pro - Lifetime costing nearly $100 is just a rip off. Why would I pay nearly the same price I can get a vblicence at for an addon? Really common sence goes a long way.

Think of it like this. You make a lifetime contract $20 you would gain an amazing amount of income as more people would be willing to pay $20 for than $100. Now maybe you think yes but we earn more on $100 per pro license instead of $20. But here is the golden question will you get more licenses sold at $20 than at $100 and im 99.9% sure you would easily double your annual revenue. More so when you have to understand that the minute your pro version goes live with in a week there is a warez site that has it avaliable for download to people for FREE.

So do your self a favour and dont think that trying to be greedy bastards will get you any where in this time and age as more and more people will just go down to the nearest warez site get it for free and you will get what? NOTHING.

Now to the problem i first noticed. You must be one of the only shoutboxs still out there that does not allow usergroup restricting and access. This is not in the lite or pro version and it is a real let down that I have no ability to control what user groups can post and what ones cant.

Next is the annoying resize box on chat impute. I dont want to give my users to option to play around with the size them come crying to me when they cant fix it.

Next is the inability to create chat rooms that can be usergroup restricted. aka an administrator or staff online chat. A good idea you sadly seem to have missed.

Next is the lack of overall control.

In the end. For a group that says this is not a hobbie but are livlyhood you seem to be doing hardly any better. I would expect from a group charging nearly $100 a bug free fully working better than any other shoutbox product. Instead of a shoutbox barly better than most other shoutboxs and that is only if you purchase the pro version with the lite version being no real improvment on the many free ones already.

The company is doing just fine as it is, and as a general rule we only solicit business advice from people who run successful software development/publishing companies, as people who don't tend not to understand the realities involved.

Just as a quick example - you claim that if we slashed out price by a fifth we would double our revenue, for this to happen we would have to sell 10 times more licenses. That means 10 times as much support, which means 10 times LESS time for updating products or creating new products - that would mean that within 3 months even if we were in fact making twice as much out of vBShout, we would be missing out on another 2 or 3 revenue streams, which would actually mean we LOSE money =).

Regarding Piracy - price isn't an issue for most people who pirate things. You can find pretty much any piece of software, music or movie pirated online. In addition you can find people illegally hosting mods given out for FREE here on vb.org - i'm pretty sure it doesn't get much cheaper than free.

If you are running Suhosin on your server, you will not see the usergroup permissions form until you have created the instance and then click the Edit link afterwards. This is not something we are able to work around at this time :(

Chrome and as of late Firefox has implemented this feature, it is not something we implemented.

A good idea you sadly seem to have missed.This is also incorrect, in the AdminCP you can create chat rooms that only certain usergroups can access, and any chat rooms you create via the /createchat command is also limited to only the people you invite.

Next is the lack of overall control.I'm not sure I understand what you're referring to here, this is to my knowledge the most feature-rich shoutbox out there, even in the Lite version :)

If you would like to suggest some new features or new options that don't already exist, feel free to post that either here or (preferrably) on our website and we will take them into consideration for future versions :)


I'm not quite sure why you are trying to claim that features that do exist do not - have you actually used the shoutbox and looked into the AdminCP menus?

You may need to add yourself to the Super Administrators list in config.php (or give your account the Can Admin vBShout administrator permission) in order to see the AdminCP menu.

1. There is, simply remove the contents of the field where you normally type the "/something" :)
2. Users will not be able to use commands you create for yourself in your UserCP, so they wouldn't be stuck using incorrect commands :)

Besides, I don't understand why you need to delete them and then re-add them? Why not just make the edits and save them? O.o

Because custom commands do not affect anything other than act as a shortcut for a larger amount of text, there's no permission settings for custom commands.

There's also no way to create a global custom command at this time, sorry.

Im guessing there as to be an area that has /commands stored some where that the shout box gets its information from.

So im hoping that it is possible to expand and create the global command using the premade ones aka pretty much just copy paste changing the output and effects and bingo.

Also it would be a good idea to include this in the next update. As I am sure I am not the only person who would like the ability to set premade commands for all users and the ability to restrict access to creating personal custom commands.

Out of curiosity, why do you need to restrict use of custom commands? Does matter if the user types "/slap Username" or "/me slaps Username with a wet fish"?

The user can do nothing with custom commands that they cannot do with text.

Out of 87 pages on the vB4 version alone we have not had a single request up until now to disable custom commands for certain usergroups - that I can remember, anyway :)

Pretty much it is for a number of reason.

Well to start with having to explain to each user how to set commands does become annoying. Also with the ability to set default/global commands all users can access it allows us to keep random spam of the community. Also we run a trade center in our community and we wanted to add a chat based system also and give users the ability to type aka /sell /buy and allow users fast and easy selling there ingame items. With this also said we wanted to give are users a set command list rather than allowing users to create there own. It just means we keep the chat cleaner and have a more broder control.

There are other reasons but they all come down to simply giving us the owners full control over the chat box and custom commands instead of leaving it to our members.

And as for the fact no one has asked maybe not many people have experimented with the function of custom commands. Maybe most do not know it even exists as most people dont bother going into the options and looking for the new tab for vbshout. This is not just a guess its just what most people do. I have used vb for years normally I dont ever go into my options other than to change my signature or custom title and most people are the same so again another reason for global set commands. Also maybe because your explination on how to set custom commands was also alittle hard to under stand. Most people wouldnt understand that {1} simply allows an text imput after the / command.

1. Where is the css to change the hi-light colour of the text input box? Its coming up as white, making it very hard to read the text inputting, cannot locate using firebug
2. Can we move the text input field to below the shoutbox rather that to the left, without changing code.
3. Show active users elsewhere on site, i.e. forum statistics at the bottom of forum home, or a cms box.
4. Is there a smart phone aware version in the pipeline?
5. With the pro version, pop out mode - does the browser notify that there are new messages? i..e so i can see from taskbar that there is/have been new messages since i last looked?
6. can we invite people to chat who are not looking at the chat window? i.e. browsing the site elsewhere.

input_background and control_focus_background. The first is before the user selected the input area, and the 2nd is while the user is typing.

The actual shouts' background area works off of the postbit_background StyleVar.

Is it possible to add like a new message number when you last looked. like a (11)Due to the fact that there's no way to determine when you last looked reliably, and as such all other shoutboxes with this feature have this number to be very unreliable, we decided against adding that for the time being :)

I just tried installing, and followed the Readme.txt file installation instructions, and when I load the forum, the shout box says "Error: Not Found", and underneath that it says "Loading..."

That usually means you've uploaded the files incorrectly, as it's trying to load AJAX info from files that do not exist. If you link me to your site, I can say for sure :)

3- Is your webdesign custom coded. I have noticed that on very small occasions a hack like the shoutbox can easily break not or not show not due to a problem witht he hack but to do with your forum skin being poorly coded [If you payed from a site like completevb do not be shocked if it bugs]

4- Trying linking Filip to your site. He will more likely be able to tell you the issue straight away.

I don't think there are issues with my other mods. You see, as I said before, I used a previous version and it worked well. Tried to upgrade...this happened.

The second option may work, I haven't tried that yet. I will try this once I get access to my server files. Thanks!

Yeah, you'd need to move it to below whatever hook location that mod is using.

Unfortunately I have no way of knowing what that location is, so I can't really assist further :(

Should have a global_start option like some other plugins so we can easily move the plugins under certain plugins.
vSA Chatbox has that option available.
Currently changing the global start in your plugin doesn't do anything....

Hi, I've installed this on my test vBulletin platform (4.1.5). I am unfortunately showing two instances of the shoutbox. The top one works as normal. Just open your upload folder and use your FTP to copy all contents inside your upload folder to your root dir (public_html)

I am trying to make the text input box be a different color. It appears to use the vb textedit_background color. When I change that color in the stylesheet, the shoutbox entry box is a different color.....but as soon as you click inside the box to type, it changes back to the original color.

Any idea what to style variable to change to have that text input box be something different?

Go to ACP then DBTecH -vBShout > Instance Manager then on the far right click on Edit, now scroll down to the Forum Milestones section and above that you will see
(Pro) Shoutbox Input Area Default Location there you select [Below Shouts] and Save....Done

Any ideas?To put vBShout in a custom location, do the following:


Step 1: AdminCP -> DBTech - vBShout-> Instance Management -> [Edit].

Step 2: Change the Auto-Display Shoutbox setting to Disabled.

Step 3: Write down the the Varname setting. For the default shoutbox, it's instance1. The rest of this guide will assume you replace instance1 with the actual Varname if it is different.

Step 4: Enter the Style Manager and add either {vb:raw show.vbshout_instance1} (vB4) or {$show[vbshout_instance1]} (vB3) to the templates you wish the shoutbox to appear in.


Follow these steps as described and you will have total control over the position of the Shoutbox.
Please note that some locations may not work as intended on vBulletin 3.8, and also note that it is not designed to go in the Forum Blocks side-bar (vBulletin 4).

Your FTP program or FTP server may be set up to disallow uploading files over a certain size.

Truth is, I have no idea. Nobody has produced any Google-able FTP program error messages and I have never encountered this issue before on any of the hundreds of sites I have uploaded files (and indeed these files) to =/

I believe I've discovered the reason why the file wouldn't upload.

One of our members at our forum also encountered this issue, and it would appear that security software on the server was preventing the file upload from completing. It blocked the file because it had a specific PHP function in it (base64_decode). That function was part of a commented-out (inert, not running) block of code, which I have now removed.

Try re-downloading the zip and re-uploading the file, it should work now :)

You can add the shoutbox to the CMS by switching to manual deployment and follow the on-screen instructions to add the variable to the FORUMHOME and one of the CMS templates :)

Could you clarify this? I found in an earlier thread that deployment is done now in instances. Can't find any on-screen instructions for the adding to forumhome.

Currently I'm trying to get this on a CMS widget, which seems to be the elusive goal for several people here. What I've done is to make a new HTML widget, point it towards a new template and inserted this code into the blank template:

I found one bug. I have clean just installed forum in version 4.1.5. URL Type is set to "Standard URLs" (without any friendly links).

I wrote new message (or comment) on my blog and in shoutbox shows notification "*abc has just posted the blog title*".

URL to new posted entry: /blog.php?blogtextid=3
After click, URL is rewritten to: /entry.php?b=2&blogtextid=3
And... nothing. It's like in loop, blank page.

This link shoud be like this: /entry.php?b=2&bt=3#comment3

I'm sorry for weird sentences english isn't my first language.

Ok, I found the solution - GET parametr blogtextid shoud be bt . This change need to be made in blog_fpdata_postsave.php and blog_textdata_postsave.php. Now it works ok.

I made one modification (not including translation to my own language). It's like from shoutbox in phpbb2 by Przemo (very big release witch many mods installed and configured), when where someone click on username who posted message, shoutbox will put [ b ]username[ /b ] on text were we are writing the message. Is very useful! Originally username link to his profile. It's made for me by me, but I can share (you can rewrite, modify etc. in future versions).

Uninstalling does not automatically remove the files, the upgrade instructions still apply.

The errors are a result of a broken reinstall, you need to try to uninstall and reinstall again.

input_background and control_focus_background. The first is before the user selected the input area, and the 2nd is while the user is typing.

The actual shouts' background area works off of the postbit_background StyleVar.

Use the dbtech_vbshout_colours.css CSS Template to change other background colours.

How do you set the pop up menu position absolute top value? Because in default style it is okay. when in the custom style is pushes down more than 200 when we click the username in the chat. YUI cannot correctly detect the absolute position of the link object (that opens the menu), whereas it can in skins that are closely based on the default skin.

If you happen to find the solution for this problem, please do post it as a number of other custom skins also suffer from this problem (mostly Skinbox skins).

Ok ive notice something on my brothers site i was helping him out and his pro i have been looking on how to disable the part where users can go to settings and change stuff i cannot find where to turn that off my brother doesnt want them messing with turning sound on in there settings or font colors etc etc i do know lite they dont have that option in changing there settings so is there a option for pro that i can turn that off for users.Please have him post this in the Pro support forum on our site :)

Probably a stupid question, but how can I select which usergroups can see the shoutbox and which can't? If I go to admin/settings, i see the options box but that basically just gives me the option to turn the box off/on. In a usergroup option, I can only select manager or not. Just wondered where all the general options are please.

I did the update and it looks right but no shouts load. It just says loading and when you type in the shout box they just disappear when you shout.... It worked fine before the update. Running VB4.1.3 patch level 3 and was running the previous version of the shoutbox. Any Ideas would be great.

Beyond what I already suggested there's sadly nothing I'm able to do, it's simply returning an empty error which is not something I've encountered before and is not caused by vBShout itself.

Unfortunately we do not maintain an archive of old versions due to the difficulty supporting multiple versions at a time.

I just reinstalled to the newest version and I have two problems...

1) it just says loading... and wont load anything.
(I've given "everyone" permissions to the AOP folder because I'm on Windows and can't CHMOD already)

2) the typing box, chat box and who's online box are all on different lines and not spanning a single row how they used to

Any help for both of these would be great.

And that may be part of the problem... half of the error logs are looking towards www.dfwsportbikes.org and that isn't the website yet..... it WILL be... but currently I am testing it locally and not live.

If you actually go to dfwsportbikes.org, the site functions fine... it's just the local copy that I'm having issues with.
