For some reasons, ever since I installed VSA Chatbox, I see TONS of people on my site, but I think they are phantom connections because they are all in the Chatbox Archive and it affects my stats.

Hiding your chatbox from unregistered users should do the trick. it sounds like the search engines are crawling all over it.

I have disabled it temporarily, but why would search engines come to my site JUST BECAUSE the Chatbox is enabled? Maybe the chatbox is causing a problem with VB4, because all the connected users where in the Archive.

I dunno about that. Guests are allowed to see my chatbox, but right now not a single one of anybody is viewing the chatbox archive. I think it's some sort of odd server issue.

I usually have 50-100 connected users. I had 1780 users a few minutes ago, 90% in the chatbox archive. There's a bug someplace, not releasing connected users.

There's definitely a bug with the Chatbox and connected users on my site. If I disable it for unregistered users, and I clean my sessions table, the connected users drop to 100. When I re-enable the Chatbox for unregistered users, bang, the connections spike in a matter of seconds and they all go in the Chatbox archive.

How can I disable the Archive for unregistered users?

Was previously using CybChatbox with vb3 but when upgraded to vb4, I am not using VSaChatbox.

We have found a bug where when a user types a very long word without a space, the chatbox is extended all the way. The chatbox should respect the width and auto puts the continuing letters to the next line.

Oh great, now I found another major bug with this Chat and I might have to remove it.

It crashes Internet Explorer.

But it doesn't crash Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari.

Running VB4.0.2pl4. When I run the Chatbox below the navbar or inside VBAdvanced, it crashes people using Internet Explorer. I believe this could be the problem with phantom users.

It would be BEST if it did not assign a particular color, but utilized the STYLE default. (Like the forums do by default).

this is great, but i m having a problem....

Users are unable to use chatbox, from their cell phone devices, they have reported that they see smilies list inside the chatbox, however they still remain logged in..

I have figured it out that Log in out buttons turns grey after 10 sec, from their mobile device, however it works perfectly fine at computer browser.

Is there any way, i can disable that login boutton feature. so people does not have to log in, ... by the way.. Setting higher value for ""Log-out user from ChatBox after X minutes of inactivity"" does not help.

I've given up on vBulletin's CMS system for now, as I'm tired of the chatbox not working on it, as well as the fact that the 4.0.3 'update' has caused a slew of new bugs. having a small issue. when i log out of the forum and get taken to the logout page, the chatbox is still showing, which is causing me to lag for some reason because of the amount of smilies i have, its downloading them all, all 700 of them, and then logging me out. never did this before. if i were to logout it would instantly remove itself from the view on the logout page.

Actually, that still MAY be the case for your boards. To my knowledge this has never been implemented in this mod. The default text color to the best of my knowledge is BLACK. I would still like to figure out how NOT to assign a color with the text.

No, the only way I ever got it to work with the vB CMS was by basically shoehorning Valter's entire codebase for the chatbox into one widget (all credit to cory_booth there, thanks for the help, sir). This is however cumbersome, has problems with format and smilies, and of course you have to update it all by hand if the version changes. I was using it this way until the 4.0.3 vB release, which introduced so many CMS bugs that I got fed up with their interface and decided to look elsewhere. Here's what I did:


Install VSa - Chatbox if you haven't already
Download vbaCMS from http://www.vbadvanced.com/
Install vbaCMS
Disable vBulletin's built-in CMS, if you're using it (CP - Plugins & Products - Plugin Manager, uncheck everything under "Product : vBulletin CMS")
Create new vbaCMS module
CP - vBa CMPS - add a new module (type = template)
Title "Chatbox" (or whatever, doesn't matter)
Active - yes
Template to Include: adv_portal_vsa_chatbox
Style: whichever you're using
Template Content: {vb:raw vsachatbox}
Use Module Wrapper Template: no
Set your usergroup permissions to taste
Save your module
Edit chatbox settings (CP - Settings - Options - VSa - ChatBox)
Show ChatBox on pages: index,adv_index
Show ChatBox in templates: FORUMHOME,adv_portal
Save Chatbox settings
Activate module on vbaCMS portal
CP - vBa CMPS - Edit Pages - (whatever you've named your portal page)
Drag your module to where you want it to display in your page in the "Active Modules" section
Set your usergroup permissions to taste
Not related to Chatbox, but you might want to tick off the "Add Navbar Link" option to keep your navbar consistent
Save, take a deep breath, and enjoy!


Setting it up this way makes it active in your vbaCMS portal page and your forum home page. If you don't want it on the forum home page, take out the 'index' option for 'show on pages' in the chatbox settings.

I have a problem though. I dont want users to select their font size and set a default one. But no matter what i put in for font size to choose from, i still get really small txt. Is there any way to override it or what do i have to change to make it bigger? The reason i want bigger text then default is that the emoticons in the text make the line a bit higher and i dont really like that.
Now the line is like 5 pixels higher than the rest of the text but making the text itself bigger would kill the problem. I just cant find out what to change

I had this and found the fix.

The problem seems to be in the installation instructions and the default configuration. If you follow step 3 of the instructions and add {vb:raw vsachatbox} to your FORUMHOME template, then by default, you will have 2 chatboxes on the page since the "Options -> VSa - Chatbox -> Position on page" is enabled by default.

Having two chatboxes on the page causes this error. The fix is to remove the code from your templates and use the options page to add the chatbox. (Or vice-versa, but why modify templates if you do not have to.)

I am using Custom pages based on your vBulletin forum (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=232324) to make custom pages.

The page I want the chatbox on is called page_chat so I tried putting page_chat and PAGE_CHAT in the 'Show ChatBox in templates" field but neither work. I have the {vb:raw vsachatbox} code added to the page.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

I've found that the {vb:raw vsachatbox} call works when it feels like it, not when YOU want it to work. :) Best way to troubleshoot that is to take that out of all your pages, turn on the navbar hook included in the default chatbox install, and have it load on all pages. If it shows up on your page that way, then you know that at least the basic functionality is there and can keep trying to tweak things to work the way you want. If it doesn't show up this way, then there's likely something incompatible between chatbox and your custom pages.

Just a thought. Seeing waay too many posts in this forum lately where someone leads in that way, and I know for a fact that the answer is already here, if you bother to look.

Anyway. I'm bored so I'll reply this time. What you're asking for is actually one of the easier things to do with the add-on.

To make the ChatBox show up on every forum page:

Open the control panel
Options -> VSa ChatBox
"Show ChatBox on pages" - this entry should be blank
"Show ChatBox in templates" by default this includes "FORUMHOME" which should be sufficient. If you have problems with a specific custom page, you can add additional templates if necessary.
"Position on page" - to have the ChatBox at the bottom of the page, the easiest way to do this would be set it to "Above Footer".
Save changes


You can also mess around with more customized placements if you want to edit the templates yourself. If you want to keep it simple, this is how I'd do it.

No, the only way I ever got it to work with the vB CMS was by basically shoehorning Valter's entire codebase for the chatbox into one widget (all credit to cory_booth there, thanks for the help, sir). This is however cumbersome, has problems with format and smilies, and of course you have to update it all by hand if the version changes. I was using it this way until the 4.0.3 vB release, which introduced so many CMS bugs that I got fed up with their interface and decided to look elsewhere. Here's what I did:


Install VSa - Chatbox if you haven't already
Download vbaCMS from http://www.vbadvanced.com/
Install vbaCMS
Disable vBulletin's built-in CMS, if you're using it (CP - Plugins & Products - Plugin Manager, uncheck everything under "Product : vBulletin CMS")
Create new vbaCMS module
CP - vBa CMPS - add a new module (type = template)
Title "Chatbox" (or whatever, doesn't matter)
Active - yes
Template to Include: adv_portal_vsa_chatbox
Style: whichever you're using
Template Content: {vb:raw vsachatbox}
Use Module Wrapper Template: no
Set your usergroup permissions to taste
Save your module
Edit chatbox settings (CP - Settings - Options - VSa - ChatBox)
Show ChatBox on pages: index,adv_index
Show ChatBox in templates: FORUMHOME,adv_portal
Save Chatbox settings
Activate module on vbaCMS portal
CP - vBa CMPS - Edit Pages - (whatever you've named your portal page)
Drag your module to where you want it to display in your page in the "Active Modules" section
Set your usergroup permissions to taste
Not related to Chatbox, but you might want to tick off the "Add Navbar Link" option to keep your navbar consistent
Save, take a deep breath, and enjoy!


Setting it up this way makes it active in your vbaCMS portal page and your forum home page. If you don't want it on the forum home page, take out the 'index' option for 'show on pages' in the chatbox settings.

Did anybody have a problem with the shoutbox just displaying "Loading..." on the vba page? It works fine on every other page but this one.

Usually happens if you're calling the chatbox twice, although I don't know exactly how you have things set up. I had some conflicts with other addons, and ended up just tossing the widget and using the 'under navbar' pre-set in options. That placement looks pretty good in my vba page, so I left it that way. Good enough until either Valter fixes the functionality or a competing product implements it better.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but I just installed it on my vB4 test environment, and the chat did not grab the chat-records from the old 3.8.4 version.

Is this something that can be added automatically somehow? When I make my live upgrade, I'm bound to forget stuff like this.

STEP 1: UPDATE USER TABLE
Add new column of type "INT"

I have yet to try with FireFox but the idea is simple. Have a coulm in the user tabe keep track of the current amount of chats. When the chatbox refreshes, run a quick query to count the number of chats. If the chats in the query are larger than the entry in the user table - update the user table to match and fire off a sound.



I hope that there will be a good response to this and Valter might provide a similar solution?

That log you quoted only shows chatbox tangentially, not as a core part of the problem. But there's no question HG's shared servers are being crammed full - all under the guise of 'unlimited' storage and bandwidth! And they aren't alone.

Nonetheless, as has been pointed out many times, any chatbox can be a real resource hog if you don't rein it in. Don't put it on every page, don't encourage people to sit in it all day long (forget sounds of any sort to notify them of new activity), do set your idle timeouts low.

Check your language locale, if it is stablished, maybe you need to modify the time and date value in vSa's adding "#"

Or, you can remove the locale modifications, then, the code in vSa's should work. :p

My BIG request here would be if somehow it would use the "FlashWindow" function to highlight the taskbar icon everytime a new message is posted. In my case, we run a "stock tips" message board and the users are mainly on their trading sites and need a way to "visually be notified" if a new "chat" has been posted.

I´m using this Mod and it´s awesome. My members are enjoying it and it´s easy to use too. However I have a small issue with IE 8.

When i´m posting/editing etc. a thread, the text box acts really weired when hovering with the mouse over it. If I uninstall the Chat Mod, everything is fine. I don´t know if this is an explicit IE8 issue or general issue.

It´s like you wanna place the cursor with your mouse but instead the box scrolls up or down. Really weired. Someone else experienced this?

the latest template edit I remember is, adding a BOLD CSS code in threadlis.css template.. other than that i did not made any changes.... And i did reinstall this mod.. deleted all messgs.. still i see that error... Please Advice..

Also I know this was posted a bit further back, but I was also having issues with ChatBox hanging on "Posting Message" when posting a link. Disabling and then Enabling the "Automatically parse links in messages" option seemed to fix it for me.

I did contact them, its "My Issue" and the VB scripts are not "optimized"
nevermind the same chatbox and VB installl was running great in another forum I was dealing with , thats why I went with HG again.

Hi, a couple of things I need.

1) wondering what I need to do in order to get active users to show on the forum home (not in the full page chat).

2) I didn't place the chat in a default location, but placed it after the <!-- /main --> code in FORUMHOME. Now, when the chat gets long enough to need a vertical scrollbar (which is fine), an ugly horizontal scrollbar appears as well (not so good). This only happens in IE, Firefox is fine (surprise!). I guess I need to change some widths somewhere, but not sure where to change this. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Just as a guess from looking at that, it sounds like you most likely have a theme loaded that's incompatible with vBulletin 4. I don't think the error has much to do with the chatbox. My suggestion would be to try running with just the default forum theme first.

As always, your first troubleshooting steps should always be to disable all themes and plugins, start from basics, then slowly add things back in.

Confused. What does "auto refresh" do ...? seems like even if I have it set for 240 seconds, or whatever, if someone posts a message it immediately shows up on my end.

Perhaps I don't understand the concept?

Confused. What does "auto refresh" do ...? seems like even if I have it set for 240 seconds, or whatever, if someone posts a message it immediately shows up on my end.

If you've done exhaustive testing and know for a fact that you can see other people's posts as soon as they post them (and not x seconds later), then perhaps there was a code change at some point.

It's easy to check, ... just log into your forum with two different browsers (firefox and IE, for example) and two different user names ... and see for yourself. If I have it set for 10 minutes, I still see the posts within seconds.

Yeah, problem #2 was huge for me... today was the first day with chatbox enabled and we had hardly any posts in the forum! I have disabled it for now.

I was thinking of maybe enabling only during certain hours of the day/week, or setting a time limit between chat messages (eg. 30 minutes)

I haven't really seen that. Oh, some useless 'chatter' now goes to the shoutbox, but if people want to discuss an issue they still use the forums.

Of course, one big difference perhaps is that I have mine set up as a shoutbox, not a chatbox. It idles them out after 5 minutes. And I would never consider adding any sort of chime or notice that a post has been made - those are for chatboxes, and not for shared servers.

Permissions need to be fixed for chatbox. I am deciding between two options:

I have a usergroup of users with 1000 posts or more, I would like to have the chatbox only accessible/viewable for them (and administrators/moderators, of course).

OR

Only Administrators or Moderators can post messages, but everyone can view (to use as a note to users kind of system).

As it stands, if a user belongs to "Regular Users" and is a secondary user of "Moderators", they cannot post messages.

edit: Actually, it's pretty messed up if you try to play around with which usergroupids can view, view but not post or are banned. I can't even figure out how it's working. I currently have ALL usergroupids banned, except for Administrator usergroup, and I can't even see the box as admin.

One of my users may have found a bug. It's not something that would happen often, but...

Open two identical windows/tabs in your browser with the page where the chatbox is active. You must be logged in at the forums and chatbox in both. Then:

In tab "A", log out of the chatbox;
In tab "B", log out of the forums;
In tab "A", log back in to the chatbox.The forum page reloads inside the chabox! :)

I have the same thing, But I can guess the reason, if you enable the visitors to see the SB but not posting messages ..The SB count all users who see that SB in all forums which install it ... I guess so .. try to hide the SB from visitors and tell me the result

Winter Sonata was correct. If you have it enabled to allow guests to view the chat then it does this. It's still a bug because there's no way all those people are viewing my archives but it's fixable. Just don't let visitors see the chat.

The only thing that would make it better for me would be if there was some flood or spam limiting settings, so users could only post say 3 posts every 30 seconds (make those settings Admin configurable). If they post more than than the flood settings, it sends a message to them that only they see that tells them, "You have reached the flood maximum for messages per second. Please slow down how quickly you are posting, thanks!" Or something like that.

For user name color, it's the color set for that usergroup. for example on our forums for Administrators we have their names in green. In the Usergroup settings for that usergroup we have

Username HTML Markup (Specify an opening and closing HTML tag with which to display the names of users in this group. This applies to names that appear on Logged-in Users, Who's Online, Users Browsing Forum, Users Browsing Thread, Posts, Member List etc.)

Uninstalling subsequently causes a database error when editing usergroup. There were left-over blank, non labeled (with the radio buttons and textboxes intact) options for the chatbox in the usergroup editing. (never configured them)

I couldn't get it to work with my custom pages, as stated here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=2034432&postcount=1072), so I uninstalled it after waiting 9 days for support and never got around to configuring the options.

Outdated code (VSa forum stats uses a table for display instead of the vbulletin standard div), lack of support, and errors with your MODs, Valter? Not good. Perhaps it would be more helpful to focus less on quanity and more on quality.

Any chatbox can be a primary source of resource usage. If you want an active chatbox on shared hosting, you want Addon Chat, which is hosted on their servers.

There are things you can do to tame it. Make it a "Shoutbox" by logging people out quickly. iow, don't let them idle there.

I had the same problem and made a new CSS class only for the input box and text area.
Simply add the new CSS in the vBulletin.CSS at the end with your background spec and replace it in the "vsa_chatbox_input" template in this code where you see my "BCKCHAT":

I've just installed this on a 4.0.4 forum and on Safari, the separator, remove text formatting and smilies text/graphics are all missing, just replaced with ? icons.

It looks fine under Firefox so I'm guessing the problems are something to do with vBulletin rather than this mod, but no joy with the search so far.

No, the only way I ever got it to work with the vB CMS was by basically shoehorning Valter's entire codebase for the chatbox into one widget (all credit to cory_booth there, thanks for the help, sir). This is however cumbersome, has problems with format and smilies, and of course you have to update it all by hand if the version changes. I was using it this way until the 4.0.3 vB release, which introduced so many CMS bugs that I got fed up with their interface and decided to look elsewhere. Here's what I did:


Install VSa - Chatbox if you haven't already
Download vbaCMS from http://www.vbadvanced.com/
Install vbaCMS
Disable vBulletin's built-in CMS, if you're using it (CP - Plugins & Products - Plugin Manager, uncheck everything under "Product : vBulletin CMS")
Create new vbaCMS module
CP - vBa CMPS - add a new module (type = template)
Title "Chatbox" (or whatever, doesn't matter)
Active - yes
Template to Include: adv_portal_vsa_chatbox
Style: whichever you're using
Template Content: {vb:raw vsachatbox}
Use Module Wrapper Template: no
Set your usergroup permissions to taste
Save your module
Edit chatbox settings (CP - Settings - Options - VSa - ChatBox)
Show ChatBox on pages: index,adv_index
Show ChatBox in templates: FORUMHOME,adv_portal
Save Chatbox settings
Activate module on vbaCMS portal
CP - vBa CMPS - Edit Pages - (whatever you've named your portal page)
Drag your module to where you want it to display in your page in the "Active Modules" section
Set your usergroup permissions to taste
Not related to Chatbox, but you might want to tick off the "Add Navbar Link" option to keep your navbar consistent
Save, take a deep breath, and enjoy!


Setting it up this way makes it active in your vbaCMS portal page and your forum home page. If you don't want it on the forum home page, take out the 'index' option for 'show on pages' in the chatbox settings.That works quite well, thanks :)

Glad it helped you. What you describe makes it sound like it's not displaying within a widget but instead is displaying at the bottom of the navbar. In my case I wanted it that way so never thought to investigate it further.

Yeah, realised that after some more poking at this. I haven't been able to create a functioning widget yet, all I keep ending up with so far is a titlebar without a body.
I was able to get the chat to work as a widget.

I made a JS Widget (where you can select a specific template)
and then I made a new template called shout.

I had to "merge" all the templates that came with chat into a single template and some varibles (like color, size, and smilies) do not pull over, so they had to be hand-jammed.

It appears with 4.02, the varible or global reference for this chat is no longer working?

But if a the next version has CMS ability, I would like a widget like mine...This is what I'm after (screenshot in original post), but unfortunately cory doesn't seem to have posted his methods (or even if it's meant for the regular CMS or vBAdvanced) so I can't be sure. Will have to pm him I suppose.
