Thanks everyone for making AME 2.5 Mod of the Month :D

AME is the multi award winning modification that smartly scans new and edited posts for URLs from a customisable variety of web sites (i.e. YouTube or Amazon or about 200 others). If it finds a match, AME will 'transform' the URL into inline embedded media without your users ever having to even think about it.

It was important for me to create a system that did not need updating (and subsequent reinstalling) every time one of the sites it supported decided to change the way it displayed its media (which is all the fricken time). Therefore I built a system in which the 'definitions' for each site could be imported, exported, tweaked and shared on a whim. This way, you only have to import the definitions that you want. It also allows the vB community to get creative and share definitions that I wouldn't of thought of!

Which sites are supported?

Included in the default installation is YouTube and Amazon. At time of posting this, I believe that there are over 180 sites supported that have been created by the vBulletin community. These range from sites that stream videos to Amazon referral links to locally hosted music and video files.

Though not tested on any version of vBulletin lower than 3.7.4, in theory it should work on versions 3.5 and higher (just dont quote this bit!).

Installation/Upgrade
Upload the contents of the forums folder into your forums directory and import the product-ame.xml file into your product manager (if upgrading, choose 'yes' to overwrite previous installation).
After installation, make sure that the system is on (admincp->AME CP->Settings)
Then you may want to try to rebuild old URLs via the tools option.

I hate long first posts, so I thought I would reserve this one for the Features and FAQ

Features:

Allows user to simply 'paste' in a URL (i.e. a youtube link) without needing to know any special tags. However instead of displaying just the URL, it will show the media embedded within the post
is lightweight as it does all of her chores without the overhead of having 1 bbcode per pattern or trying to parse a post every single time it gets displayed with a bunch of patterns. AME radically reduces overhead and speeds up processing. The only time ame will kick in is after creating a new post or after editing an existing one (or if an ame tag is found)
is extensible. She allows you to add, edit, delete, import and export patterns. That way you can decide which services to support, how they should look and then share them with others! At time of typing this, there are over 150 media sites that have been contributed by vBulletin.org members
can extract the media title (requires your server to allow url wrappers with fetch_contents or ccurl)
can extract embed code from sites whose URLs do not contain sufficient information to embed the video
can rebuild your old posts to convert your 'other' mediaish tags into URL tags.
can rebuild your old posts, blogs, comments, visitor and social group messages to convert URL tags into ame tags where needed
can convert her codes BACK to url codes so you're not stuffed with a bunch of dead tags if you uninstall!
won't uglify your site by having videos appear in quotes, php, code or html blocks (blech!)
can be globally disabled
can be excluded from forums
can exclude usergroups
can be toggled on/off per post, blog, comment, visitor and social group message
would cook dinner for you if she had arms
can wrap the output in a 'container' with original URL
has a super comprehensive admincp help system. Yes, I actually took the bloody time to add all the info you need into vB's admincp help system. If you ask a silly question in this thread that is addressed in the help system, you will be taunted.

has hooks around integral operations so you can extend it
Supports embedding in vbBlog, Visitor Messages and Social Groups.
Can be disabled in one or more of the following sections: Posts, vbBlog, Visitor Messages and/or Social Groups
Validation ability. This will help prevent media being embedded that can not be embedded (i.e. youtube videos that the author has stipulated can not be shown off of youtube). This option requires the extraction option to be turned on and a valid validation regexp. I have included one in the default youtube version. When a video on you tube gets embedded, but the author doesnt allow embedding, a link (with icon) is shown instead.
Ability to prevent non authorised usergroups from viewing (see Readme file in zip for more info)
Usergroup permissions (edit usergroup to adjust edit/view permissions)
Template driven system
Signatures supported
Different sizes and template configurations for each supported zone (posts, blogs, groups, visitor messages and signatures)
A couple new hooks (Mainly to support a future add on for AME media in profiles)
Notfication system (similar to vB's to check for errors)

FAQ's


Can you make me a definition for xyz? Personally, no - I just don't have the time, however there are plenty others that do (Digital Jedi being the grand champion).
Can I use my definitions from a previous version? You should be fine with many of the definitions for AME 2.0 however many of the new features will not work until the definitions have been updated.

Troubleshooting


I keep getting 'doubled up' media or the media is all wacked out.
This is usually caused by duplicate definitions. Check you don't have duplicates. Duplicates are bad.

The video embeds fine, but when I click to start it, it says the video isn't available anymore. Yet, when I click the link, it is! What gives!?! Gief video!
This is because the publisher of the video has disallowed off site embedding. AME has a feature to help prevent this (see next point).

Media won't embed, it just gives the link with an icon after it.
This means that the publisher of the video has disallowed the video to be shown off site. Its actually a feature of AME to do that :)

I can't see me AME CP or I keep getting errors similar to:Warning: require_once([path]/includes/ame_bbcode.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in blahblahblah

This means that you have not correctly uploaded some (or ALL) of the files in the upload/forums folder. Simply FTP ALL of the contents of the upload/forums folder into your forum directory (as the per the readme).

If you have tripple checked that the files are there are you are still getting errors, check that the server has permission to execute the files (they should really have the same owner as your other vB files)

Thanks guys... just fixed it. It was a bug with the check to make sure files were uploaded first. It wont have affected your installs, but it also wont happen again.

Also, thanks to the lame-o who rated it 1 star. Can only assume its some disgruntled 'other media hack' coder who couldn't pull something as snazzy as this off ;)

Download 2.5.1, upload all the files and reimport the product xml.

Upload all the files in the forums folder into the folder on your server where vB is. the amecache folder (and the index file inside it) will go into your vB root directory (just like all the other files and folders).

You don't upload your files one at a time, you upload them all at once. That's why their already sorted where they're supposed to go.

They've always been marked as unsupported, since updates can be done on the fly by the community. I just hang around and create the illusion it is. Kind of like the illusion I create to make it sound like I know what I'm talking about.

Heh, sure. Here's one where you won't have to go anywhere to grab URLs. I made this one to auto format internal link from your forum. This one does Forums and Category links (NOTE: does not do the ones with "daysprune" in the URL). It's supposed to grab the URL and title of the page.

Heh, sure. Here's one where you won't have to go anywhere to grab URLs. I made this one to auto format internal link from your forum. This one does Forums and Category links (NOTE: does not do the ones with "daysprune" in the URL). It's supposed to grab the URL and title of the page.

Thanks DJ. Found the problem and have sorted it for next release. Its pretty minor so I'll hold off to see if there is anything else that needs to get fixed before I do another release. As a side note, make sure all $url and $title variables in your definitions are $ameinfo[url] and $ameinfo[title] respectively. $url will no longer put the url in and $title may or may not produce the title you are after :)

The videos still get show in widescreen format. But if you can change the Replacement HTML if you want a larger video monitor.

Keep in mind, many media sites change their formats frequently. Also, many definitions will need updating for this version.

Super and informative. FWIW I like a system where I don't have to type BBcodes in. No more than other users like to wrap URLs in tags. Copy + Paste FTW. Not to mention bbcode tags like the above are VERY inefficient if you have multiple providers.

Hi. First off, make sure you click install on this mod please :)
Second, Make sure you are importing the definitions using AME's import system (not vBulletin's product importer)
Otherwise, you need to ask in the thread you downloaded the definition from.

What footer? Your page footer? I couldnt imagine this mod affecting the vB footer?

Only thing I can think of is some sort of mod conflict. This system isnt even invoked on member.php

Second, Make sure you are importing the definitions using AME's import system (not vBulletin's product importer)

Not sure why you would go from 2.5.1 to 2.0.2 back to 2.0.1. Ive seen the system work fine with arabic, so I can only assume it works with other language sets. Again, I suggest that if you are having problems with a definition, that you post in the definitions thread so they can look into it.

Validation ability. This will help prevent media being embedded that can not be embedded (i.e. youtube videos that the author has stipulated can not be shown off of youtube). This option requires the extraction option to be turned on and a valid validation regexp. I have included one in the default youtube version. When a video on you tube gets embedded, but the author doesnt allow embedding, a link (with icon) is shown instead.

Keep in mind, many media sites change their formats frequently. Also, many definitions will need updating for this version.

Check your AME AdminCP settings. That is where all of the sizes are set. However note that is a new feature in 2.5 and older definitions may not support it yet.

Okay. Just keep in mind, there's more then 20 to 30 sites that BBCode wouldn't even work with, because their videos have no video ID and AME converts them without having to even tell your users that it's going to embed.

If you're using mine, then I haven't implemented that yet. Mainly because I didn't know how to use it. Now that I see the The Geek has one in his default install, I can reverse engineer what he did and I'll have it ready for the next 2.5 Defs update.

The second is viewing permission: Who's allowed to see the embedded media.

I believe Non-Specific is the same as Default Zone Settings under Settings. Areas that are not specifically posts, visitor messages, signatures, vBlog or social groups.

The basic gist is: Create a custom field and when it is saved or edited, use hooks to call the relevant ame functions (i.e. prep_text to 'ameify' it). Putting the results into profle blocks was pretty straight forward stuff.

Well, I can't speak to the CW, but if there was a legal problem with embedding videos from Hulu, then I doubt they'd put that Embed link beside every video that takes you to a block that says Copy this code to your website or blog which then gives you explicit directions on how to adjust the start and end time to your liking. :)

Haven't been able to duplicate. It shouldn't prevent imports though.

AME adds a flag field to the posts, blog and groups tables. This allows people to disable embedding as well as to greatly speed up processing. If your posts table is massive, it will take a while to do, but it isn't an abnormal practise. Sounds like your tables may have already been in a state, especially if you have to repair additional tables. Its a good idea to backup your db before installing a mod that makes changes to the DB structure. Hope your repair goes smoothly :)

BUT, it should be

the ksort not functioning makes the display of the sites unordered. with this fix it should work fine =)

Are you saying that definitions aren't sorting by name for you? Because I've never had an problems as long as they were all set to the same number. Or are you refering to the sort order inside the XML file?

Okay, the first major thing I'm running into is, the non-embeddable videos are indeed converting to links, but the link doesn't go a valid URL. It seems to be using the title instead of the URL.

I do have one question, real quick. How does the validation tool know to look in the Embed Code box for a pattern? I'm curious how this will work for a site that keeps the embed code stored differently, or that put their embed code inside the flash player.

All it is doing is looking for a match to that pattern in the destinations source code. I suppose if the embed code is being shown in a flash player, you would still be able to view it from the page source as a parameter for the object (unless of course the flash player is fetching it at run time). In that case, I don't really have a suggestion :D

I am running vBulletin version 3.6.8. I have not been able to get the embedded youtube to work in either version AME 2.0.2 or 2.5.3.

With AME 2.0.2 - it will display the normal youtube controls and video image, but when I click the play button it blanks out the image except for circle in the middle screen which just spins forever. So I decided to upgrade to 2.5.3, and now when I post a youtube link in a message I do not see anything, not even the the link.

I have tried it with the extraction turned on and off.
I am sure it isn’t the video because I got it to play using BB code.
I do get other video file types to work using AME such as wmv.
I just don't know what to test anymore and was hoping for some suggestions.
I would go back to 2.0.2 if that would be easier to resolve.

Still sounds to me like an outdated version of Flash. Drop a couple URLs of ones you are having problems with.

Remember that if the embed code is there.... AME has done its job. Everything else is down to connections, etc...

On an aside... have you tried posting the embed code from one of the problematic you tube pages into a post (you'll need to be able to post in HTML)?

Try this:
1- Temporarily give yourself ability to post HTML
2- Make a thread with the link to a problematic youtube page and save it (let ame do its thang). Refresh that page, then view the page source.
3- disable ame
4- reply to the post above by pasting in the embed html from the problematic youtube page. Refresh and view source.

Both sources for the youtube should be damn near identical and should perform the same.

Geek, I have one more question for you and then I'll leave you alone for a couple of hours at least. AME doesn't seem to like single quotes (') in a RegEx. I always get an error, but sometimes I really need the apostrophe to make matches to get ID numbers using extraction. I've tried the ampersand commands or just escaping them, but none of that has worked so far. Is there someway around this?

DJ, We did convert over to 2.5...after some fiddling, a web person who actually knows what they are doing compared to me got pretty much all the previous GoldBrick media tags to convert.

Is there a way for this to NOT grab the name of the video file sharing site and auto-add it to the video title name? Or better yet, substitute in a selected name added to the video title? I bet 500 downloaders want 500 different things! lol

Instead of getting the Dreaded blue M of death thumbnail, now all the videos have screengrab stills. Finally! lol.

Extraction pulls the titles of the videos. However, a good chunk of the definitions in require the extraction to be on in order to work. What you can do is change the HTML of the title in the container template or create a new template for your videos.

Sorry Geek, a I write so poorly to begin with, know next to nothing about coding or your work out side that I love it.

My problem now solved and also DJ in another post suggested a simple regex that would have nearly surely cured it as well was hosting on my local server and an example of the problem link was like: http://www.gladhatter.com/gladmusic/what's_myfav_song I first filled in spaces with %20 and then took them out and added undersores and then took them out and still no work. Finally I took out the <'> in the word "what's" and it picked it up and worked fine. Then I learn that in the set of code or what ever is is called had the <'> been added to the trim or ignore or what ever that module of it is called then it would have likely not been a problem at all.

My coder set mine up for me and addmited he did not know much about the regex lib and would have to had studied it more to address all my concerns. He is extremly qualifed coder in the area's he works in however and is quite busy building some huge mods for the VBgallery we have installed and I did not wish to disturb him further from it and 6 other advanced coding projects we have him assigned to.

So now that you are her and I have not yet found the sugar that DJ requires in his tea or coffee to get this one :) :),,,,And again the coder is flooded with 6 huge projects, and I am dying for one more site to work as it is not on local server and all my attempts and hours or work to make it were in vein would you consider adding or showing me what to add to make: http://www.wimp.com/farylsmith (http://www.wimp.com/farylsmith) work. Videos in 2.5 are set globally in your AME CP >>> Settings per region. If you only want a particular site's videos set at different dimensions, you would edit the Replacement HTML for the individual definition.

I'm having issues getting my youtube links to embed automatically. It works fine when I enter a link using youtube link. Posting other videos like gametrailers, photopost, and cnn videos autoembed with no issues.

I've removed the ame code, deleted/reuploaded all files, and uninstalled/reinstalled using rebuild with no luck. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I'm using DJ's AME definitions.

Any help is appreciated.

Does anyone else have problems with this plugin taking an AGE to embed a video?
For instance, when I embed a youtube video in a new thread, it takes upwards of 20 seconds for the post to submit

I've not encountered any slowdown with AME myself. In fact, it's faster then BBCode. Perhaps the issue is the YouTube site being slow at certain times?

Do you have any other admins that may have tried to upgrade the product? It can't update on it's own. Make sure ame_bbcode.php and all your AME files uploaded to the right place on the server.

When you imported my definitions, did you remember to delete the stock YouTube definition first? Mine won't import on this new version if you don't, and the import process won't stop you if you imported a bunch of other defs successfully at the same time.

Have you checked the code in the non-converted posts to see if they in fact still have the [youtube] BBCode in them and that Goldbrick didn't do something funny upon uninstall?

Well I am going way out on a limb here and going to say that about millions of us have not a clue of what it takes to alter a table with millions of records.

I could suggest a small earth quake under the building with that table full or LP's or possibly 45's on it may well alter it.

Now I do have a couple sincere questions here however.

Are you intimating by your post that altering a table with a mod is a poor coder choice of methodoloy?
You seem to find favor with the mod and yet some slanting there is a bad method used in the fruition of making this all happen in heavily populated tables. What I am concerned about is really two fold.
One is if you think this is a poorly written program do you also have a solution to it or are you a problem only type coder that sees others mistakes but has no valid solution to share with the class?
Have I some how misunderstood your post and you find all things about this mod of a pleasing nature?
If the first assumption is the correct one, will you tell us your proposed solution for it?
If above is true, do you plan on releasing the "fix" for this and if so when is the anticipated release date?
Further and probably finally, do you have some mods you have created with similar complexity so we can see your brilliance in work and not just in word?
Really finally now, I am convinced this mod is a God send and a wonderful one that brings enjoyment to all that either know how to install it and negotiate the hurdles they run into or else the ones that choose a professional programmer to install it for them and they simply or complexly enjoy it period. Do you think you may be a bit harsh should you be judging the mod is poorly written and not offering any valid solutions for the fix of it and have coder as your title?Just curious you please understand.

I understand your sarcastic tone and let me tell you it's not my intention to criticize the author's work. I know his work because I used to be his customer. I haven't seen the source code to even understand how it works and I don't plan to do it.

My point is that not everyone has super fast arrays of hard disks to modify a big table in a reasonable amount of time. I'm sure there are other ways to approach the same solution. Saddly I don't have the time to do it right now.

My mysql server has spent over an hour altering that table. That's my point. There's nothing wrong in altering a table but the post table as well as the attachment table or the search table are usually very big tables on big forums. I think it's something to care about when developing the mod.

Any way, I'm not killing the alter table process. I'm sure it's a great product and I want to see it for my self. But I'm not even done installing it and I'm already thinking about the nightmare when I have to uninstall it in the future.

Hey Julian, I wouldn't have added the flag field if it didn't provide a tangible performance benefit. I tried many other methods like a lookup table, however all methods meant that while I was avoiding adding a flag field, I was arbitrarily adding a lookup (or similar process) when it wasn't needed 99.9% of the time.

The reason behind the alter is that it I add a tinyint field that will flag if the post (or thread) contains AME code. If it does, the relevant AME definitions will get loaded, otherwise it won't. Since the vast majority of threads do not contain embedded media, it seemed like a waste to load the AME subsystem (and the users definitions) when it wasn't used.

So, my options were to add a field to maximise performance or slow down all performance regardless of if it was needed or not. I chose the former :)

Out of all the commercial and free modifications I have released over the years, it is the only alteration (apart from usergroup permissions) that I have done and I think it is a pretty wise move.

Tough one here... see, that isn't a format that will change easily because the parameters are backwards to normal formats. The conversion system may be able to do it, but remember that the system is there as a bonus tool to get rid of other codes that didnt install correctly. TBH, I would first do a search in phpmyadmin to see how many posts contain the code. If it is only a few, manually change them.

Disabled all plugins, rebuilt threads by removing and replacing ame tags, and still no luck. In usergroups I have everything marked yes for my administrator role and most of my users have the same setting except "Can create/modify non specific zones" is set to no. Not a major issue as long as they can click the link and the script still works well for everything else I've tested.

I may roll back to an older version to see if that works. I'm wondering if something went wrong when I upgraded from 3.6.8 to 3.8.0.

Well, that could be the problem. When you say you put the upload folder, do you mean that literally? Because it's the contents of the forums folder in the upload folder that your supposed to upload to your forum. See how everything in the forums folder is structured just like your vB folders are structured? You don't just add the upload folder.

This is what your instructions say:

So what you're saying is that I need to individually match each subfolder under forums and drag that folder from your side. I thought that all you had to do was just grab the entire upload folder and copy it to the forums folder. I thought that the other folders would automatically go to their other like subfolders. I hope that made sense. :erm:

At any rate, I will try it again when I get home, transferring one folder at a time.

Double click the "Upload" folder you will see items to upload directly onto the forumhome directory and then you will see things like, "Admincp" inside it. If you open that file you will find items to upload into your "AdminCP" rather than onto your forumhome...

first of all it it prompted you to moe the floder and replace the other one with out replacing NON same name files then you may have been alright but if the option choosen or by default overwrites the folder and all contents then you best hope you had a recent back up.

Actually, moving contents into matching folders one at a time is precisly what you DO NOT want to do, as this can lead to mistakes and takes way longer. You DO want to OVERWRITE matching folders, as doing this adds the contents of one folder to another without deleting anything. Not to mention, it's the fastest most efficient way to do so.

I am confused and embarrassed to answer you.

Do you have some music files on your local server now? If so have you created or do you have created AME tags for these file types on in your AME cpanel I guess it is called?

If you do and all is set up right you just paste the url to the song inside the post and it will play in AME player automatically.

i tested it out by disabling the product for 2 days to see if the speed improved which it did, and as soon as i enabled the product it slowed right back down again

You may wish to be more specific and note exactly what you have done, what you expected to happen that did not and what you have attempted to date to resolve it.

You may wish to post a screen shot of the problem and identify any unique situation you may have or set up.

Also what version of VBulletin you are running along with any outside or major add ons.

These are just thoughts that may help get you a proper diagnosis.

Geek do you have any thoughts on this? My site at some point around the time I installed this ( but also installed a ton of other mods) and custom code came to a turtles crawl speed that they cannot idenify on the server side but reconize it as well.

No, these are brand new links, and I never tried posting a video on my forums before, nor have any of my members. This is something brand new to me.

I may have skipped over a few pages in this thread ;) But I still haven't seen any troubles from other users posting the YouTube vids when I was reading through them. Most I saw were people getting error's, and I am not getting those, just a link from YouTube but no video :(

By the way, other videos show up just fine. Only youtube videos so far.
Does the video have embedding disabled? If only a link appears (with an icon) it means that the destination video has embedding disabled. You can also double check by following the link to see if it has embed code on the page.

when i installed this on my 3.8 site it slowed it down immesnly

i tested it out by disabling the product for 2 days to see if the speed improved which it did, and as soon as i enabled the product it slowed right back down again

Rebuild post cache removed videos. If I go back to edit the post, I can still see the video link there but shown as [ url ] http:// www. youtube. com [ /url ] (without spaces and with full video url).
Then you had the setting to 'remove AME code' on. This setting is designed to remove AME from your posts (i.e. you were going to uninstall it) instead of leaving behind a bunch of dead bbcode.

Not sure if you have the problem sorted yet, but this is not the correct directory structure at all (and hence why you are having problems). I would suggest that you ask your host to install if you are unsure of how to upload the files.

My slow down is nothing to do with AME then as I have 10 local songs hosted and it is slow all the time recently pitifully slow and not when posting a song or such.

I am sure the problem will be found on my server in time by a 3rd level tech and will have nothing to do with Vbulliten or AmE.

All AME does is replace url with <embed> HTML. That isnt time consuming and certainly not very resource intensive. The only time AME itself will slow things down is IF it is told to go to the destination web page and extract details from it (i.e. the title). In those instances, the additional time is spent in your server downloading the destination web page and parsing it for the details it needs. If your server and/or its connection is pants and/or the destination site is slow or offline, this will cause a noticeable slowdown. However, as mentioned, the only time ame will actually do this is when a post gets saved. Otherwise, AME is about as slow as using a smilie. :)

The rest is down to what you are embedding. Say for example its a movie from youtube... if the user is on a 14.4k modem, it may take a minute for the youtube video to appear, but that has nothing to0 do with ame or your site, it is actually youtube that the user is waiting on.

First all the videos are there. Then when you rebuild post cache, the videos disappear. If you click on edit post, all the links are there, but not displayed in the post. Anyone else having this problem?

There is an option in the rebuild setting to REMOVE ame code. This is so that you could revert back to normal URLs if you ever needed to.

More than likely, you have it set to remove them.

I had the previous version of AME installed on my 3.7.4 forum it worked fine. Then i upgraded to 3.8.1 and updated to this AME. YouTube video's do not embed and they do not contain ame tags.

I first removed the ame tags and then rebuild posts.

We started Vbulliten a short while back. I think it was ver 3.74 then went to 3.80 and then to 3.81.

I do not know much about UTube other than my 22 month old son enjoys some TV commercials like the babies on etrade and such but my wife looks them up so I really do not use it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ_50VrLUBo is the first UTube video I came to when I just done a UTube from Google. I am not familar with the content of it.

I did create a test post and pasted the url in and saved it and the video worked perfectly and flawlessly.

I hope this helps.

Version 2.5.4 has been uploaded.

This is a maintenence realease that addresses a rare bug with some page titles. Apart from version numbers in file headers and the product XML, the only file that has changed is includes/ame_bbcode.php

You can simply replace that file, or upgrade as normal.

well i think those embed code conflicts with the vbulletin system. i tried to disable plugin system and allow html in posts. then paste the embed code directly into the post. same errors happen.

maybe someone could help report this bug to vbulletin.com? i can only get support on vbulletin-china.cn, and i won't rely on them.

Check the FAQ and readme. It wont automatically embed old urls unless you rebuild them through the amecp. Do new/edited posts work?

looking at the source, it looks like you may have some sort of addon that puts ads around youtube links. not sure though.
