INTRODUCTION
v3 Articles was originally written for the fine people at www.DodgeTalk.com, for use with their vBulletin forum. The purpose of this add-on is to provide a place in vBulletin for articles (e.g. news, reviews, editorials) similar to that of the thread interface - but with a more content-oriented approach.
Features:
- Usergroup based permissions
- Full editing/deletion/moderation system
- Article attachments
- Article ratings
- Comments system
- "Featured Article" system, give great articles top exposure
- Introduction and category description text
- Smilies and icons
- Full BBCODE/WYSIWYG support
- Attachment captions
- Full page navigation for articles and comments
- Comment dupe checking
- Status icons
- View users' ratings in their comments
Alternatively, check the screenshots! :)
I've tried to make the installation as quick and painless as possible. Enjoy!
WORKING DEMO
You can see a working demo of v3 Articles at www.v3articles.com. (Part of the v3 Arcade website.)
MANY THANKS
- Ron Wilson, of DodgeTalk.com
- Everyone on v3Arcade.com who donated to keep the server running
SUPPORT
Support can be found in the v3 Articles thread on vBulletin.org, and shortly on v3arcade.com. (I'll set up a priority support system.) As always, I'll happily give support for real problems. However, a lot of the time people ask questions about things which have already been answered hundreds of times. If you have a problem caused by not reading through the instructions or checking through the support thread, I can't guarantee a response.
DONATIONS
v3 Articles is free, but my server isn't! Any donations are hugely appreciated in order to help me keep my v3 sites running. (PayPal: john@eovie.com). Many thanks to those who donate!
If you're looking for someone to install v3 Articles for you, email me at john@eovieinteractive.com.
PLEASE CLICK INSTALL
Needless to say, if you install this please click the "Install" button. Thanks. :)
And here's the last three.

Not that I know of. It's still v3.0.0, and v3Arcade is installed.

Hmm, something crazy is going on. I'll look into it.

Everything seems to work... very cool, great installation.
Problem is when editing cats, adding, deleting, whatever.
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: build_datastore() in /home/okiewan/public_html/forums3/admincp/article.php on line 224
It does however make the edit.. ie; edit cat, submit, error, but cat is edited.
Thoughts?

You could always use an absolute URL, e.g. $vboptions[bburl]/article.php.

vBulletin version?

3.01
Hmm, I don't think so. On your forums, in the footer -
Powered by: vBulletin Version 4.0.2
Copyright ?2000 - 2004, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd
4.0.2 doesn't exist. From the fact that you don't have a build_datastore function, it shows that you're not running 3.0.1 or anything like it - in fact, I'd say you're running an RC build. Someone has changed your vBulletin version manually through your Admin CP in debug mode.
So, there are a couple of options here.
1. If you're paying someone to upgrade your forums, they're just ripping you off and changing the vBulletin version number. (Whilst leaving the code untouched.)
2. You're not upgrading your forums properly.
Who does your upgrades?

He does that to throw off would-be hackers. :) It is actually 3.0.1 he is running.

He doesn't have the build_datastore function, so it can't be 3.0.1. vBulletin didn't use that function in the RC days, it was added in Gold.
If he doesn't have it, he must be running something older than Gold.

I use the table prefix option with my vBulletin installation.
I mention that because while the admincp's article.php file uses TABLE_PREFIX for the new table queries, the installer doesn't, and the forum's article.php file uses a mix of both.
You can imagine what the end result is.

HI
The install was pretty easy however I can getting this error when I click on the link to go to the articles page. I am logging in as a admin and the usergroup is set up
you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation

I found a small error. Everything is running fine except that the articles are not counting properly. I installed and followed the instructions to a T and had no errors.
I created a top level cat then a subcat and then another sub cat then posted an article. The article shows up fine but the homepage still says 0 articles.
Everything else works like a charm, thanks again for all the work!

My installed went thru perfectly, but I have a problem with the templates! I can't see any of the image buttons for posting new articles! And all the catagories are allowing articles to be posted too...
Also, I'd love to be able to move posts from one of the forums in to the articles section, that'd actually be really handy. :)

No, you can't edit captions yet. I considered it, not really an urgent feature at the moment.
Regarding the other problem, I've fixed it for my next release - expect the update today.

Just upgraded by overwriting all the files, now I just get a blank white page when clicking the link on the navbar from anywhere.
Hummm...I reuploaded article.php 3 times, each time smartFTP asked me to confirm overwrite which I did, then checked the page and it was white...finally after double checking everything else, I went to upload old article.php and it said the one on the server was 0 bytes..so I went back and reuploaded the new article.php for a fourth time and this time it worked!!
Damn! I have to ask myself in a sarcastic tone: "Use a pc much pal?" :)
John, I'd like to add your a copyright footer for you with your icon like the arcade...can you tell me where to place the code?
Edit 2: I got it..for those with the arcade, go into your articles template and find $articlecontent, right below it paste:
<span class="smallfont"><br><center><a href="http://www.eovieinteractive.com" target="_blank"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_arcade]/eovieinteractive.gif" border=0 alt="Eovie Interactive"></a></center></br></span>
Nice job. I know I'll use it.

Howdy John, Great work on the update but there is still one small SQL problem in the forum's article.php file,
$comment = $DB_site->query_first("SELECT articlepost.*, article.categoryid FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "articlepost
should be
$comment = $DB_site->query_first("SELECT articlepost.*, article.categoryid FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "articlepost As articlepost
That's line 660 in my editor.
By the way, this is a great system, I'm popping over to your site to drop you a *little* something.

although this is excellent work, i just don't understand how it is really any different than using the forum for this type of thing? Which is what I am doing now for my DIY's....
Ditto on this, it seems that normal forum operation provides the same functionality as this, only slightly different layout?
I've been waiting for an article hack for a while now, dunno if this is it though?
How does this look if legacy postbit is used? Is there an option to allow an article to span several pages?

When editing an article, if you preview the changes and then save it, it saves the original. When you click preview, it enters the original text in the textbox.

Installed the hack, it's great, but I have a slight problem with the styles. I use custom skins, and one part (see screenshot) on the main Article list page is not really the way I wanted to look. I need to change the area, where the text is to some other class, where can I do that?
Also, what class is the test, which says in small letters "Main Category Description"? I guess it's not smallfont because my small font is white, and here, as you can see on the screenshot it's dark. How can i change that?

John, this is awesome work. is it possible to add new features? Such as
Able to edit/delete articles from within the ACP or move it to another category.
Password protect a particular category
Appoint a moderator of the article section (with thier own CP)
Appoint a moderator of a particular article category (with their own CP)
Individual permissions for individual categories (like the forums do) so I can allow users to create articles in one category, but not another.
Create articles from within the ACP (so I can close the whole system, but still add articles).
A "Byline" field to be displayed next to the article. Too often I will upload an article but it was actually written by somebody else.

There's one basic vbAdvanced CMPS module available at vbadvanced.com, and a couple others with more features following shortly behind. A search over there for 'v3articles' would probably do the trick.

First of all -- very cool hack. Installed perfectly. I'll be sending some $$ your way.
After I completed the hack, my admincp isn't building the frame set. I just get the left nav frame, which opens a new window when I click anything. It's still usable -- but not working the way it's supposed to. I've retraced my steps and can't figure out where I messed that up.
Any ideas?

There's no bbcode in featured articles. (That is, the front page preview.) It stops the page from being deformed.
How do the comments work? Is the article an actual post just formatted differently or what? I'd want the comments to look the same as posts do.. Are they posts or are they totally different, something in a new table just for v3articles? Thanks :)

John,
You need to change articlepost > postbody to MEDIUMTEXT (same type as the forum's own post > pagetext)
Large articles can't be posted otherwise.
Cheers,
Tim

Does HTML in articles work for anyone else? I have allow HTML checked as yes but all it does is print out the code on the page.

Well, you can use the [img] code to embed an image in the usual fashion, but I'm guessing you're looking for a way to display saved images rather than hosted ones?
Thats right, because of the nature of the documents (graphics tutorials) they will need multiple in-line graphics and I can't take the chance of the images disappearing off other people's web-space.

I did have a need, but i just used the forum for it. I would just like to see what makes it different other than the layout. If u can convince me why I should use it over the forum for articles, I may install it.
I see this being more useful for articles and such where it's not about discussions but about focusing on one initial post (the article). At the same time you can allow for commenting and rating of the articles, but if they want to actually discuss it they'd have to do it elsehwere. At least that's how I see it.

A "Byline" field to be displayed next to the article. Too often I will upload an article but it was actually written by somebody else.
[/list]
I need something like this too, or at least the normal "unregistered" options, where I can type in a name/email address for a submitter rather than it strictly being posted as "Unregistered".
I'm convering old stuff from my site to try to integrate everything with vb, and I have 4 years worth of articles posted by various people and right now there is no way to post those without them either showing up as written by me or Unregistered.

Moderation doesn't appear to be working.
I have it turned on and initially all it did was show a little icon next to the title of the article signifying that it needed to be moderated (but even unregistered could see it). Now it doesn't even show the icon and registered or not you can view the article.

i got this fixed, since the uninstaller is useless and i don't wanted that my articles are gone, i looked at the templates, the ARTICLES template was outside of the articles group and some templates were missing, really strange, so i used the installer and installed the templates only, that did it for me.

Hmm, John, you didn't put anything about file edits in functions_online.php. ;) Here's the necessary <sp?> file edits so articles will work in 'who's online'
Find in Includes/Functions_online.php:
case 'bugs':
$userinfo['action'] = construct_phrase($vbphrase['viewing_x'], 'Bugs'); // Don't report 'bugs' as needing to be translated please :p
break;
Add BELOW:
case 'article':
$userinfo['action'] = 'Viewing the <a href=\"article.php?$session[sessionurl]\">Articles</a>';
break;
Find:
case 'bugs.php':
$userinfo['activity'] = 'bugs';
break;
Add BELOW:
case 'article.php':
$userinfo['activity'] = 'article';
break;
Save & Upload Includes/Functions_online.php
All done. :)

You're right. I went back and looked and couldn't find it either. I thought it was an option, but I guess it's not.
That does kinda suck that once you feature an article you can't go back to not having a featured article. Personally, I'd just like to be able to move where the Featured Article shows up.
