This is a wonderful and useful hack. I'm having the same thumbnail issues as Henry RS on my 3.03 test forum (I'd show you but, well, it's my test forum!). GD 2+ is enabled, thumbnails are working on the rest of the forums. It's just the article thumbs that are showing up a broken image. Does anyone know what might be wrong?

(I should mention that the first test article I created before turning on the thumbnails on my forum is showing the correct "placeholder" image, i.e. the "file.gif" I uploaded as part of this hack.)

Other than this glitch, I love this addition to my forums, and can't wait to move my articles over to the new system. Many thanks, John!

I've noticed another glitch.

If you are moderating articles/ comments and you delete one instead of validating it, when you look at the info on the articles page... it doesn't update there.

IE. On the category page it shows the last update as being one that I deleted. And on the article list page where it shows the comments, it shows two comments on one article where there is only one (there were two initially in moderation and I deleted one of them).

I've got a real quick question, posting HTML into the Articles system is causing a spacing issue where the HTML is listed almost a page down and the rest of the space is blank - You have to scroll down to get to the actual article and the tables are all spaced out whacky.

Thankfully installed on my test forum before installing on main ..
Too many missing icons in too many different areas and uploaded images don't show .. GD is enabled and Rebuild Attachment Thumbnails done .. think I'll come back to this thread in a few weeks when all the bugs have been ironed out .. :)

Not sure what happened - but my other admin was able to view the Articles, post articles the whole 9 yards - I then re-checked and now I can see it all - no probs...

Got no idea what changed - so can't elaborate...

In response to spence2 - I have VB3.0.3 - I have rolled it through all upgrades since RC2 of VB3 - and yeah it now works.... although no idea what caused the initial SQL errors I was getting..

I've managed to do this by directly editing the database, but it's a pain - you have to edit the article table (change the category number), and also the category table (change things like last article, last comment, number of articles, etc.)

I agree, it would be great to be able to move the articles through the system itself.

To clarify on my previous post, I want to make two different instances of this same hack. One for articles, the other for reviews, and possibly more in the future for other sections of my site. My question is this: How would I go about running two instances of this hack on my site with one vbulletin? I have tried changin all the "article" variable names to "review" but still ran into some trouble with duplicate database entries. No, the attachments thumnails do not work with 3.0.3. The problem was brought up weeks ago, but still nothing has been fixed.

The search function doesn't use page navigation, it shows all of the search results on one page. I think that may be the reason it wasn't added in the intial release, I'm sure it will be fixed in the next version :)

Hi, I found out that when you post an article the number of posts of the user is counted. However, when I tried to delete the articles, the number of posts of the user cannot be adjusted. Does anyone know how to fix this? Hope someone can fix this for me. Thanks. Other than that, this is a really nice hack.

I actually had the exact same error during testing, and then found that I had to save vBulletin Options to fix the problem.

For certain reasons, v3 Articles was coded as a standalone system which was then combined with vBulletin. Because it was a whole new system, there were a few bugs which needed to be worked out.

The new version is very different to the old. It's completely integrated with vBulletin, in the sense that it's entirely based on the thread/post system. Because of this, the biggest benefit is that you get the stability of vB3 - everything works in much the same way as the rest of the forum, so you get all the additional features threads have. (Such as polls, for example.)

The difference is that threads are called articles, and posts are called comments. And of course, the layout is geared towards article presentation, as well as all the old v3 Article features.

I assume you are mostly trying to stabalize the system to make it work better but I don't suppose that in this version or a later one you could make it possible to allow articles to be moved under a new user account? A lot of our articles come from people who aren't on our forum or don't want the article to show under their actual username so I generally post them and then have to move them into a new user account but I don't think vbarticles allowed for that in the past.

Thanks again for the amazing hack, I spent all weekened fine tunning an external script that I wrote in the past and now I see its probably all a waste :)

Find this:

Replace with this:

$articles = $DB_site->query("SELECT * FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "article
WHERE categoryid=$cid $moderationSQL ORDER BY title ASC LIMIT $start, $finish");


ASC is forwards, DESC is backwards. Datline is by post date, title is by alphabetically. I suppose you can also sort by other variables by replacing the word "title" in there, but thats up to you to figure out.

Yeah i wanted to be able to add it to a non vbpage also. They could put a option for admins to send the article to a non vbpage but it would have to be able to write the article into a menu system on another page. So it created a new link on a non vbpage - leading to the article on a non vb page.

After various days of battling with this hack. After trying to search more information about the table schema used by it, after sending several e-mails to the creator, after posting a request for information here (read my previous post to this) and today asking another time support for the creator (and willing to pay for this).

Got extremely p*ssed with this rogue hack and decided to get rid of it COMPLETELY of my system until a future version who solves the fails and cleans everything and deficiencies.

To get rid of v3 from your database you need to follow this simple steps:

0. MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR DB! It's vital to recover it if anything goes wrong. This steps are done by me, but everything can fail and send your Forums DB to h*ll... Give yourself a second chance to get completely cleaned.

1. I assume that you tried to uninstall it via the install.php script provided by the programmer of the hack. If not, do it and follow next steps to get a completely clean system another time.

2. Connect to your database (check with your provider if your database is on a remote server), this is my case, so you need to issue from a shell of your account this command: mysql -h databasehost -D databasename -p -u yourusername

3. Issue this command on the mysql client: drop table articles ; repeat this command (drop table) with the next tables: articleattachment, articlecategory, articlepost, articlerating. This deletes phisically those tables from your database, note that at the end of each drop table <table name> you need to end that line with ; and double check the table name...

4. Next command is very delicate, so check ten times if needed before hitting enter, because will do surgery with a table who is vital for your forums and only you want to remove a column on a table, not restoring the database and start another time from step 2. :rolleyes:
On the mysql client you need to issue this command to remove the column added by the installer: alter table usergroup drop column articlepermissions ; (Note the ; at the end of the sentence).
Depending of the table size (small.... very small unless you run thousands of different groups) mysql client can wait for some time to return the control.

5. You've done it!. Probably you will have some more little bits from v3 articles on you DB (watch on phrase manager & template manager). But at least you've cleaned manually your DB (who the install script doesn't do giving the excuse of 'keeping' the content... wth! I want to get rid of everything!) and if you from time to time find anything you can safely remove it with complete peace of mind (will do, at least for this version).

6. Follow the install directions another time, but deleting what you added in the past (do some backups of the files before applying surgery - copy them to filename.php.original for example).

7. Remove the files you added.

8. Last but not least, click Uninstall on this thread if you previously clicked Install.

Edit:

If you followed those steps in the order I've told you, seems to be 99% uninstalled, just found little bits hanging on the DB. So... since Uninstall doesnt work as intended, you need to thank the autor to do manually. Additions to the uninstall procedure.

Fire a shell session and connect to your mysql database (just follow another time step 2 on the procedure).

Do a simple query like this: select * from settinggroup where grouptitle="v3_articles" ;

MySQL will surely return you a row as a result. In this case, fire this command: DELETE FROM `settinggroup` WHERE `grouptitle` = 'v3_articles' LIMIT 1 ;

Revised all my tables and didn't found more things related to v3 articles on my system, so if you want/need it... following those simple steps will give you a 99.99999999(pure period)% system.

I want to be able to add html on the main article template so that i can put a graphic saying ( Write articles for us ) and maybe a html text description next to it saying something like - Volunteer article writers needed.

The graphic would point to - http://www.yourdomain.com/forums/profile.php?do=editusergroups , so they could opt to join.

Obviously this html ( graphic and description ) would only show to members who did not have permission to write articles - otherwise the add an article graphic would show instead.

Should be easy to do this but i am not a coder.

I've spoken with John and while I am confident that vba will be a GREAT hack don't expect a ton of feature additions (although I'd be there are a few). I'm thinking that if there is a way to get the articles indexed similarly to threads and the search routine re-written to include article indexes, it might work. I'm thinking of a solution to the same lack-of-a-search problem for the calendar. But there is no quick solution to this issue and is one drawback to having this hack vs using a forum for article posts (which would be searchable).

That's probably not it since I'm running 3.23.54-max-debug. But I have run into a problem with seeing my main forums with no one logged in on certain computers. It's weird.

My test setup runs off an external usb drive, so I can take it anywhere with me and work. Well, on my home 98se system as a server, the forums don't show up to someone not logged in, and they should. But on a win2k or xp system they show up fine. And it's the same stuff running off the same drive. I'm dumbfounded and pretty mad at the same time.

for everyones FYI... i did this from the INSTALL notes ... and it now works.2. Log into the Admin Control Panel.
Expand "vBulletin Options", and click on the "vBulletin Options" link.
Scroll to the bottom, click v3 Articles - click "Edit Settings".
Click on "Save".

Expand "Usergroups" on the left. Click "Usergroup Manager".
Edit the settings for any usergroup, and click "Update".

I'm glad you found the problem. I'm surprised you could even see the main category. Did you do this when you initially installed or just now?

I intially had problems seeing my forums until I did that too, but I still have that goofy problem where I can't see them when running on the 98se server. I've even tried doing the save settings again with no luck.

I have an issue with <img> tags not parsing the html on the featured article page.

I have just started using the v3Articles on my www site, and currently have only a few articles on there. I have an article I want to feature that has an image in the first few lines. When I select 'Feature this article' - the display on the featuerd article page does not parse the <img> html code correctly, and the URL for the image shows up instead of the image itself.

I understand that this might have been a design decision to keep the featured article page small, neat and tidy - and a sensible decision too. However, is there a way to overide this setting and allow the <img> code to be parsed thus showing the image not the anchor...?

Hope no one thinks im rocking the boat...

But I was interested in this mod until it struck me that you should be able to do virtually everything this mod does with a handful of template modifications couldnt you? You could simply insist on a particular forum using a particular style (one modified to this layout).
That way you could also get the search facility (the key reason I didnt install right away).

Like I said, correct me if I am wrong. I would be very interested in something like this... but it doesnt make sense for it to not come up in a search.

You just goto your usergroups and your find the usergroup for super moderators.. click on go and then scroll down. Your see a list of options for articles, enable the features you want that usergroup to use.

Yes there is, its under general permissions and above forum viewing permissions.

If you can see those permissions and not article permissions you have done something wrong when installing the hack.

But my Super Moderators don't see the articles that have been added to the moderation queue... just admins...?? so they don't see any articles to edit!!!

I have just taken the time to read the entire thread. I can't say that i applaud the author of this hack for his "support" on this hack.
I am running 3.0.3. I too was having the same problem with the thumbs as everyone else was. John should have answered that question seeing as it effected everyone that ran 3.0.3. That made it a serious bug.
This hack is great. I think the concept behind it was great as well. However, the support that the author agreed to is poor. I won't be clicking install until something better comes along and doesn't carry any bugs.
I would like to thank arpy for repairing the thumbnail problem with 3.0.3. It worked great.

Please appreciate that as a freelancer I have to work to make a living, and at the moment I don't have *any* spare time - period. My financial situation is dire to say the least, and as such supporting free hacks on vB.org is the last of my priorities.

The main reason for the delay is because the new system uses a different database structure to the old, which means I'll have write an import script - because anything less than that and I'll have a bunch of ingrates emailing me with complaints. Furthermore, I'm sure there are going to be a lot of people who actually prefer the old system to the new one - visually, it's completely different. When I can afford to, I'll get the update packaged up and the import script written.
