John,
I think all of us are grateful for your work. And any nasty emails are totally inappropriate, and I'm sorry that you have had to put up with that kind of crap!
However, for some, the question of support is not a frivilous one. If it is clearly stated that you will not support a hack, then it gives everyone fair warning that they are on their own.
Also, knowing that an upgrade is not coming in the short term helps all of us know how to further design our own forums.
Again, we are grateful for your work. That was not the issue. So, thank you for the update.
btw (not addressed to you, John) ... those who tell others to "shut up" should expect a little sarcasm back at 'em.

..and those who cant be patient should also consider themselves lucky they get these scripts for free....
I will not enter into a word of words with you - because like John, I have a life and to dignify you more than I have is a waste of my efforts :)
Thanks for the update John, sorry some people have to be moron's about it all - I would just ask you keep going for the people that really appreciate all you do in your free time - and for the rewards you were seeing earlier..

I think people (like me) just needed to have some news. We can understand that developping a new system takes a lot of time, a time very hard to find with a professional activity beside. But it's with saying it, that people can realize ; not with letting them talking without knowing.
Thank you :)
P.S : the song before was a parody of "Mary Hopkins" : "those were the days".

I don't feel you "owe" us anything, its a free hack, and as the saying goes, you get what you pay for, so its a bit much to expect everything to work like clockwork.
I have read the whole thread, but over a long period of time. I may have missed this, but I'm presuming there will be an easy upgrade path when the new version comes out.

09-23-2004, 10:51 PM
You did not have to reply to that John. I am sure there are plenty of us that are grateful for what is still a great hack. For my part, I will say thank you again.
Ditto.
One thing that has always amazed me in running what are basically free sites is that the more you give people for free the more they will find to complain about.
John, this is a great hack and as much as I would love to see the upgrade, I would be willing to pay for a full working version of this and I'm sure there are others who would as well. It might be something to consider.

God don't get me started, if I see one more thread +++++ing about advertising and why do you have banners on the site...groan...because I don't have ?400 every month to pay for the server and since you guys want it for free DEAL WITH IT!
Sorry just had to rant ;)

I know, thanks - but there are some people who are just beyond belief, where if it's a matter of trying to work to pay the bills or to do free support, they seem to think I should do the latter.
Anyway, not to go on about it - I'm sure many of you are going to be surprised when you see what's coming next. (All my free time has gone into it - that's why it's been so difficult to get anything else done, apart from the fact that I don't have much spare time in the first place.)
John i had some really good ideas that you might want to use when making the next version.
How about these two for example...
1) The ability to save articles in a special favourates folder - pretty useful.
2) The ability to archive articles on a none forum page - so you can degenerate the artcle subjects into a menu and show the articles - you could have a seperate template in the admincp to add a top and bottom template and options to show - just the articles or the ratings also or links to the forum articles, etc.
That would make this hack extremely cool.
Good suggestions?

Something last:
It says in the txt:
3. v3 Articles runs in forumroot/article.php. You need to link to this somewhere, most people will use the navbar to create an "Articles" link.
To do this, open the navbar template and find:
-------------
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="calendar.php?$session[sessionurl]">$vbphrase[calendar]</a></td>
-------------
Above this, add:
-------------
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="article.php?$session[sessionurl]">Articles</a></td>
Where can i find this navbar template?(where do i have to go)
Thanks a lot again
lanc3lot
09-27-2004, 10:29 PM
Found it after searching some posts...
Here the answer, for anyone has the same problem:
Admin CP -> Styles & Templates -> Style Manager -> ? ? -> Navigation / Breadcrumb Templates -> navbar
Thanks a lot again:)
SamirDarji
09-27-2004, 10:31 PM
Some pretty newb questions, but I was scratching my head a few weeks back on the same exact stuff, lol.
Anytime someone refers to a "template", it can be found under the "Style Manager" under "Styles and Templates". A template is simply a bit of html code which is called by the php part of the program to help render the page.
So to get to the navbar template on a specific style, you have to get to the Style Manager and then you will see all of your styles listed. Hit the expanded << >> button to the far right. It will open up a list of templates as well as a "Controls" box to the right of the list. Click on the other << >> button there and it will expand out all the templates for the style. They're in alphabetical order so it should be easy to find. Once you find it, click on it and then click on "Edit" in the Controls box. It should be self-explanitory from there.

In the installation txt, is says:
" IMPORTANT!

Also,

2) if u go here (http://www.gamers.gr/board/article.php?a=1) u will see that there is a white line that intrerrupts nickname and all that...How can i fix it?
Thanks(going to sleep myself)

09-27-2004, 11:55 PM
No sleep for me! I have to have my site done by Thurs and I only have today and tomorrow to work on it.
GD is something that is installed on the server that allows it to manipulate images. To see if you have it installed and to set up vB to work with GD, goto the vB Options-->Server Settings and Optimization Options. There you'll find an option for the GD version. If you have something installed, it will say the most likely version number. Pick that version from the drop down box and save.
I'm not sure how to delete articles, that was a question I know was asked in the thread somewhere. I looked at my own test installation and figured it out. You have to go to the article-->Edit Article-->at the bottom there is an option to delete it.
That line is part of the style that you're using. (I've actually played with that same vbdesigns style too.) If you switch to the default vB style, you'll see that it goes away. The only way to change it in the style you have is to change it in the style itself. Admincp-->Styles and Templates-->Style-->All Style Options.

I forgot to add that you'll have to rebuild the thumbnails after enabling GD. Admincp-->Import and Maintenance-->Update Counters-->Rebuild Attachment Thumbnails

Lol, u are very helpful mate:)
I go to options, and its says: Likely GD Version : N/A
Then in the drop down menu, its has GD 1.6 & 1.8 and GD 2.0
I tried to put both of them, but then, when i go to the --> Admincp-->Import and Maintenance-->Update Counters-->Rebuild Attachment Thumbnails
Its says:
Your version of PHP does not have image support. Please make sure you have enabled GD if your server does support it by going to Options -> vBulletin Options -> Server Settings and Optimization Options
Do u think, that it could be wise to post it to Vbulletin How do i forums? I mean GD is a feature of VB or is something that only this hack use?
Or how can i install GD:(
Thanks anyway, u are very helpfull

I go to options, and its says: Likely GD Version : N/A
This means that your server doesn't support GD. :( GD is a part of the server, just like this hack is a part of vB. You'll have to talk to your server administrator about getting GD enabled. Then vB will see it and can use it.

Ok Samir, going to send the mail now...
thanks a lot, owe u one:P
As an extra test, put the following in a file named gdtest.php and upload it:
<?php
$i = imagecreatetruecolor(100,50);
$w = imagecolorallocate($i,255,255,255);
$b = imagecolorallocate($i,0,0,0);
imagefill($i,0,0,$b);
imagestring($i,4,5,25,'it works',$w);
header("Content-type: image/png");
imagepng($i);
imagedestroy($i);
?>
Then point your browser to it. If it doesn't work, no GD.
lanc3lot
09-28-2004, 01:10 AM
It shows that:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: imagecreatetruecolor() in c:\web\gamers.gr\gdtest.php on line 2
So it means that is not working huh?
Can u please tell me, i will ask to enable GD? is a full name of that, or just that?

Good morning to everyone:) ( hehe, maybe now its there night, not morning like here!)
Anyway, some more question, to the one can know them.
1) When a new major version of VB will be released, and if i have to change my current version to that one...what will i do with the articles? ( i am talking for Vb Articles)
Do i have to copy/paste it one by one or could they be in a file, which i only have to backup it?
2) Is any way, to include tables in the post - article? I mean,if we talk for gaming Reviews articles(like me), will be kewl to have tables with the "score" of the game, the "requirements", the "pros or the disadvantages' and others...Could that be easy to be done?
Thats all...i am waiting for my GD to be installed, and start upload some articles:)
SamirDarji
09-28-2004, 01:48 PM
Good morning! Some answers:
1. This articles hack is like any other hack, and most other hacks need to be removed or re-installed after a major vB version change. At work, we're running 3.0.0 beta 7, and none of the hacks I've applied to my new board would work on that version. The tables will still exist in the database, so the problem will be in adapting the code of the original hack to the new version of vB.
2. Tables as well as any other HTML can easily be included. Just be sure "Allow HTML" is enabled for that category in the category manager.

Is john see these threads, or no?
SamirDarji
09-29-2004, 01:38 PM
I believe there is an issue with 3.0.3 and images. I know I don't get thumbnails, but I haven't tested it extensively.
Did vB recognize GD and does it work with other attachments? Remember, you still will have to rebuild the thumbnails under Update Counters in the admincp. Even with all that and after searching in this thread for "thumbnails", it seems as if the thumbnails do have a problem with any version higher than 3.0.1. Someone mentioned redoing the code so a text link would show, but I didn't look for it.
John has stopped in once people started getting testy, but he is quite busy on other projects, so he won't be able to help in the near future. But the good thing is, he's working on a new version even better than this one. :D
As as aside, I didn't realize you were all the way in Athens, Greece! I lived for a few years in a small town called Athens in the state Alabama here in the USA. We once got a piece of mail that was misdelivered to Athens, Alabama instead of Athens, Greece, lol. And the confusion is even more when all the neighboring states also have a town called Athens--Athens, Georgia; Athens, Tennessee; Athens, Mississippi.

Not that this will help anyone, however, I was able to use the image thumbnail fix and get this to work with 3.0.3. without issues.
I have decided though to await the new release so I uninstalled this hack.

When someone states: "I Agree to Support This Hack"
When someone states: "I have created an update & will post it."
Then, I'm sorry, but there is a credibility gap when they do not!
Why is it "demanding" to expect someone to keep their word? If there is a delay or a change of plans, couldn't John simply post that new information?
Three More Options:
1. Mind your own business.
2. Repeat step 1.
3. Repeat step 2.
In response to spence2...you whinning like a 4-year-old seriously bothers me.
And as for minding your own business(I believe thats how you stated it, see quote above), if you where minding your own business you would have whinned to yourself in the first place not bothered the rest of us with your nonsense!!! In your smallness you may be forgeting John has provided us with some fantastic hacks and people have other lives as well. v3 Articles 1.0.1
By John Warwick, Web Development Freelancer (john@eovieinteractive.com)
Fully tested and working on vBulletin 3.0.1.
Part of www.v3arcade.com
INTRODUCTION
v3 Articles was originally written for the fine people at www.DodgeTalk.com, for use with their vBulletin forum. The purpose of this add-on is to provide a place in vBulletin for articles (e.g. news, reviews, editorials) similar to that of the thread interface - but with a more content-oriented approach.
Features:
- Usergroup based permissions
- Full editing/deletion/moderation system
- Article attachments
- Article ratings
- Comments system
- "Featured Article" system, give great articles top exposure
- Introduction and category description text
- Smilies and icons
- Full BBCODE/WYSIWYG support
- Attachment captions
- Full page navigation for articles and comments
- Comment dupe checking
- Status icons
- View users' ratings in their comments
Alternatively, check the screenshots! :)
I've tried to make the installation as quick and painless as possible. Enjoy!
WORKING DEMO
You can see a working demo of v3 Articles at www.v3articles.com. (Part of the v3 Arcade website.)
MANY THANKS
- Ron Wilson, of DodgeTalk.com
- Everyone on v3Arcade.com who donated to keep the server running
SUPPORT
Support can be found in the v3 Articles thread on vBulletin.org, and shortly on v3arcade.com. (I'll set up a priority support system.) As always, I'll happily give support for real problems. However, a lot of the time people ask questions about things which have already been answered hundreds of times. If you have a problem caused by not reading through the instructions or checking through the support thread, I can't guarantee a response.
DONATIONS
v3 Articles is free, but my server isn't! Any donations are hugely appreciated in order to help me keep my v3 sites running. (PayPal: john@eovie.com). Many thanks to those who donate!
If you're looking for someone to install v3 Articles for you, email me at john@eovieinteractive.com.
PLEASE CLICK INSTALL
Needless to say, if you install this please click the "Install" button. Thanks. :)
I just have one question. I want to have a feed of my articles on my main page, from a specific category, (so I can display articles like a blog like neowin.net does(although, they dont use v3articles & vb)) Can you tell me how to do that?

As far as I know, you'll have to use a portal system like vbadvanced cmps. That one I know for sure has a module that will do it. Do a search on vbadvanced.com under the cmps for "article module" and you should find some info on it.

Something like that usually is in a template somewhere. I have to run right now to cover a car event, but reply to this thread and it'll remind me to look it up for you. I'm curious on that myself. I think I'll change the name of my articles too. :D

In a sense, yes. See this link for more information: http://hsv.streetracing.org/About.htm. This is the site which I am revamping using vb as the back end. The new name of the site is www.huntsvillecarscene.com and should be 100% active in the next few days.

Thanks!

The "Site Navigation" is just a module with some html in it. I plan to put conditionals in there so certain links will only appear to certain usergroups (or at least I'll be attempting it).

10-05-2004, 09:12 AM
In response to spence2...you whinning like a 4-year-old seriously bothers me.
And as for minding your own business(I believe thats how you stated it, see quote above), if you where minding your own business you would have whinned to yourself in the first place not bothered the rest of us with your nonsense!!! In your smallness you may be forgeting John has provided us with some fantastic hacks and people have other lives as well. Oh and by the way I did a search of this entire site and I don't exactly see any mod contributions by YOU, only complaints. Perhaps if none of these mods work for you you should "examine" who is installing them...Thank You So Much...!
I do not need to defend myself for asking if John no longer supported this hack or whether he intended to follow through with the upgrade he mentioned on August 17th. Those were/are legitimate questions. There is a big difference in this and in demanding support or upgrades. I merely asked for an update of his intentions.
I have thanked John for his work.
And I have been respectful to all who were respectful to me. Coders on vB.org are very generous people and very kind to share their work with the community.
If John had responded that he had no intention of supporting this hack or of following through with the upgrade that would have been fine ... no complaints ... lots of times people change their minds or life interferes with their plans. I was asking for information ... based on his own stated intentions--not my expectations.
I hope your 8th post in this community is more pleasant than your 7th.
Despite being called names like "moron" etc., I have no fight with anyone, so don't you think we could let this rest?

Samir a question, in case u know:)
In the new Vb, u can modify the options, and when u upload lets say an attachement,have there in the "manage attachments" page, more than one upload button(til 10 i think)
If u modify that, strangely it doesnt change the procedure to the upload of images to the articles!
Is it a specif php i must change,for exampe, copy the one from the vb forum(if i find it!) or do u think, it will make everything not work?
Thanks in advance:)
Ps
Also, is there a way, to fix the Who's online bug? I mean, if u press to see the profile, of a user who is in your articles page...its doesnt show it there, and say that there is an error!
Ps2
Also, i noticed another bug...When u say to moderate the articles, the "editors" could submit an article, and it will be shown in the column that says: which article is the latest...so if u press it from there...u can see it!! If u go in the forum..u dont see it!!!
Bug huh?
Any solution to all?:)
SamirDarji

Wow, good discovery of bugs. Definitely will make me think twice now of putting this on my production server.
As far as the bug for the attachments, John must have wrote his own routine for attachments. (That explains why the thumbnails have the problems and also this problem.) I don't know where to look yet since I haven't run across the bug, but when I do in the next month or so, I'll be looking for a solution too. My suggestion would be to do a view source on the "manage attachements" box and see if you can trace it to a particular template or php file. Then see how the default vb one is and see if there is a way to modify the default vb one to work or how to re-write the articles one to use the vb variable to determine how many file can be simultaneously uploaded.
The who's online code must also be completely custom. Again, do a view source and see if you can determine where the source code is. Then from there, see if you can modify the stock vb code to work, or if there is a way to change the articles code.
I think the last one may not exactly be a bug. I haven't tested that functionality yet, but when articles are moderated, they won't appear in certain places until validated. The function you have described, if a bug, will be kinda difficult to track down, but seems pretty easy to fix once found.
Keep finding the bugs and post the pieces of code if you find them. I'll try to help you fix them, and if I can't, I know someone else will try. Once I start seriously playing with this system for use on my production server, I'll work on the bugs myself if there are no fixes by then.

But that's still not a bad place to start. If vb did change the attachment method, the who's online and other parts that are having problems may also fall under the same category. The way to discover this is to see if the same problems occur on 3.0.1. Anyone with 3.0.1 willing to help do some functionality tests?

Actually, there is at least one bug I know of that is version related. I'd go through all the posts (I know, huge job), and read up on it before installing.
Someone needs to compile all the information required to run this on 3.0.3 and put it in one post. If no one has done it by the time I get around to extensively working on articles, I'll do it.

I figured it out. Basically the images are directed to each "style's" directory. So basically I had all the images in the /images/ directory, while the style I was using was in the /images_grey/ directory. Just uploading to the correct directory fixed it.

Hey fellas....I'm running vB with the vBadvanced CMPS (just starting to set vBa up). My site is www.ap0calypse.com and one of our main features is our hardware reviews. Up till now we have just been posting them in a dedicated forum, but I want to make it more professional, like on the bigger well known sites. You know, so the review has its own pages...you start reading the review, then click "next" to go to the next page of the review, etc.
Will this hack let me do that? I started reading the posts and it seemed like it.....but rather then read 40 pages I figured I would just ask the question.
Also, if someone is using this for reviews could you send me the link to your site so I can see what it looks like....thanks!

Think about it this way; you ran the install - but did it edit the admincp files for you? No it didn't - the file edits did it for you. So you must reverse-work through the file edits instructions :)

Hi! Help me please!
Forgive for my English. I from Russia and I only started to learn English language.
I have installed "v3 Articles 1.0.1" on my forum. I have a little altered your script. But I have not achieved that result which was necessary for me. I need the following. On the main page v3 Articles there are many sections. I have made so, that under each section the reference to last news was deduced. I should make, so that three references to the last of 3 themes were deduced. As I should make so, that before references to news time of its publication has been written. E.g.: [20:18 | 18.10.04] - " Why not? "
Help to make it. Beforehand I thank you.
P.s. Forgive for my English. I from Russia and only started to learn English language.
My site is: http://www.lectro.ru/forum/article.php
Well, I started writing a bugfix document for this by starting at the beginning of this thread and going all the way through, and most of the problems I see people having are not due to the fault of the script. I won't be recompiling the documentation like I originally thought, but for the newcomers (who probably won't read this post anyway once it drifts back one page), here are the relevant issues:
No input file specified (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=520232&postcount=31).
Red X on the article index when no post icon chosen. Cause: Not using default names for post icons.
"mysql error number: 1064". Fix (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=520254&postcount=48) - Save VB options as per instructions.
Wrong article count: No fix yet
Custom BB codes don't work: Intended

Searchable articles (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=542480&postcount=357)

"Last comment by" (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=547796&postcount=410) doesn't link to user profile.

Well, I finally found my last issue conflicting between this hack and the VB Journal hack.
In includes/init.php
Journal has this for UserGroup permmisions:
'canviewcomments' => 4,
and
Articles has this for UserGroup permmisions:
'canviewcomments' => 2,
So, If you go into AdminCp/Usergroup Manager/Edit Usergroup and look for these 2 permissions:
Articles/ Can View Comments
Journal Permissions/ Can View Comments
If you select YES on either one of these it automatically kicks the YES and/or NO radial selection out of the other selection.
Thought I would give a heads up on this for those that may incounter this issue.
I don't have a fix for it, nor do I know why its and issue, (I can assume why) for I am not qualified to know what to do. :D
If anyone else know how to fix the issue it would be greatly appreciated.

I've created a new Bot and assigned the User ID in the settings. But I have no idea what to fill out for:
Regex Search & Replace for Titles
&
Regex Search & Replace for Descriptions
search & replace boxes.
Bump.
I am getting e-mails of my cronjob:
Status: 404
Content-type: text/html
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.9
No input file specified.
Did I type in the wrong URL for cronjob?

i'm using v3 Articles for music and film reviews, and would like to have the attachment used as a thumbnail beside each listed article. basically, i'd like it to go where the post icon goes now.

Yes... I had a coder make the necessary mofdifications to the files such that my Moderators can now moderate all submitted articles...
Colin F is the super developer who did the work for me... I'd suggest PM'ing him - he is very good. (and tell him I sent you yeah...:) )

That's not the bug i was talking about, I was referring to this one:
Also, i noticed another bug...When u say to moderate the articles, the "editors" could submit an article, and it will be shown in the column that says: which article is the latest...so if u press it from there...u can see it!! If u go in the forum..u dont see it!!!
Submitted articles that I haven't approved yet still show in the latest article column. This is a huge one for us.

After looking through this thread closely, I found one person asked this question and did not get an answer:
Is it possible to change how attachments are stored? I changed attachment storage for all of vB to file system, but v3Articles doesn't follow suit, nor is there an option I can find to change it for v3 Articles alone.
If not a current option, will it be in the next update/version, or is there a quick code change that can alter it for me?
Thanks,
~Garrett

Also, I noticed a few pages back that someone had trouble linking to sites outside their domain. Has this been addressed??

I have this up and running and I just thought of something for a future release.
It would be good if it was possible to span articles over multiple pages. This would be particularly handy for those large articles that contain lots pictures etc. It could also have a drop down menu at the bottom of each of the article pages which give you quick access to the other pages within the article.
Hopefully that makes sense. I could use this feature now so if anyone knows how to add this functionality now, please let me know. I am quite other would find this quite handy as well.

I can't get the bloody thing to work.
3.0.3 with v3 Articles 1.0.1, I am getting a blank (forum colours & fonts) template page at article.php.
See here (http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/article.php)
First installation gave no errors.
To fix it I have tried uninstalling, including manual database table dropping of the 5 articles, & the usergroup modify.
I have re-installed again resulting in the same problem, with the addition of no setting options viewable under "vBulletin Options" heading in the control panel.
What's the go anybody?
My board has many hacks & none of them were dramas to install.
It would be a good enhancement to our forum & in it's current non working state it is not causing any grief, however getting it to work was the aim of the game :squareeyed:

Did that :disappointed:
Does this mean my install is knackered forever?
I can't fully remove the install & start again because of the additions to the templates. If I do the remove step it leaves more than just the database table behind, which is apparent when I re-install unsuccessfully.
I have no options in the control panel, & the content of article.php doesn't show, only the editted template with upper level "article" heading.

Well i installed it, and whilst it *can* be great, there are two main things stopping me from releasing it to my users yet:
1) If you delete an article it doesn't delete the images from the database
2) Once you have uploaded an image, you cannot edit the text under it nor change its order. So if you want to add a photo inthe middle at a later time, you need to delete all the attachments and then re add them....
Has anyone done any work on either of these issues?

SQL problem in article.php (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=520774&postcount=114)
Who's online: Install this hack (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=66569) (or use this (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=521347&postcount=138))
Add on: Printable versions of V3Articles (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=66979)
Searchable articles (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=542480&postcount=357)
Alphabetically sort articles (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=547082&postcount=403)
"Last comment by" (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=547796&postcount=410) doesn't link to user profile.
Thumbnails problem fixed (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=544396&postcount=376)
I think that's about it.
Awesome!!! Thanks for compiling this list... only question I have now is: Is there a way to un-Feature an article once it's been featured?

How can i make this hack, to when i write a new article, to can upload more than one images in the same time?

Yes, I remember. :)
I haven't been working too much with articles after I played with it on my test server. There are just too many issues to install it on my live server right now.
But I know that the attachment system used by the articles hack is different than vb's built-in system and that's why a lot of the attachment related problems exist. The only way that you can upload mulitple images is to change the articles code to allow it. Unfortunately, I don't even know where to look. :(
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

While I don't know if you could add the code into the actual article body (ie. allow the user who submitted the article to add the code), you could add the code to the template and it would show up on every article.
For that matter, what type of code does Adsense use? is it not just HTML? If so, then you should be able to just allow HTML in the articles and then users could submit the code if they chose to.

Good hack, but it is very buggy and standalone is not a good idea. I unistall and wait for next release. THANKS A LOT!!!!
Some Bugs found:
- If you [ Feature This Article ] you can not undo.
- When I attach an image I can only see a X where image must be loaded
Thumbnails work fine on my forum. The article thumbnails are not working.
- I have just see at your articles site that someone hacked your articles system, maybe there is a way of editing articles without permissions
- Last user who made a comment isnt linked to his profile (linkvalue is empty
- Questionmarks wont be parsed (it shows the HTML-Code instead)
- When editing an article, if you preview the changes and then save it, it saves the original. When you click preview, it enters the original text in the textbox.
Some suggestions for the future
- set permissions on each category
- vbulletin Search system index articles - Integrated with vBulletin Search
- Guests can write comments
- Printable Version for Articles
- New Articles Shown in Bold
- Ability to Move Articles to Different Categories
- Listing in Who's Online
* Viewing Article
* Article Title (with link to specific article)
- External Javascript feed to show last articles anywhere on the website
- A "Byline" field to be displayed next to the article. Too often I will upload an article but it was actually written by somebody else.
- integrate this into the forum itself, so that articles automatically become threads and comments are replies

Just after it, add this:

else

Well, the only way to unfeature an article is to feature another one. If you don't want any article to be featured, ever, you can just remove the HTML from the templates.
As for the guests to be able to post comments, there are permissions for that, but they don't work. I never noticed that, but if I get time to figure it out, I'll let you know. :)

It was only showing the comment parts of an article to users with a userid and then taking permissions into account. This should fix it:
In the template article_display, Search for AND Remove:
<if condition="$bbuserinfo['userid'] != 0">
Search for:
<div class="vbmenu_popup" id="articletools_menu" style="display:none">
Above it, you should see:
</if></if>
Replace that with:
</if>
Then save the template ;)

OK for all those who answered my question (or tried to) No you cannot simply insert the Adsense code into the article because:
#1 It's Javascript, so for obvious reasons you don't want users able to submit JavaScript in the article body.
#2 It would also take some HTML tweaking that not all users would be familiar with trying to get the articles to show where they want them.
Soooo...
Since revenue sharing (IMO) will become the new "it" thing for webmasters I decided to allow my members to make money off of articles they write for my site.
See an example of how the articles look here (http://www.halofans.com/article.php?a=4)
Basically what I've done is modified v3articles to insert members' Google Adsense ID into the google code displayed along with their article. Whenever a user writes an article their Adsense ID (an optional custom profile field) is inserted along with their channel ID in case they want to track the performance of their adds on my site. I don't do the 50/50 thing. They make ALL of teh money generated by clicks from their article. I make money with ads on other parts of the site and my own articles.
So what do you think?

Suggestion: Will someone please recompile this download with the bug fixes in place?
I'd do it but I'm busy securing other parts of my site as well.
Oh yeah and I'm wondering why I never got an email alert from the AUTHOR notifying me of such a huge vulnerablity?
Because of all the bugs that are suddenly popping up I'm thinking of recoding this thing from the ground up using the code for snippets only.

I don't think John knows this already, if yes he should have given a official fix.

if (!$permissions['articlepermissions'] & CANFEATURE)
There are a few in there that are right though, hopefully he will release a new version soon. :)
WRONG, if it's only if (!$permissions['articlepermissions'] & CANFEATURE) then this is totally incorrect, it is never going to work, it MUST be: if (!($permissions['articlepermissions'] & CANFEATURE))
I've spent half a day to fix all issues by myself and fortunately yet disappointedly I found alot of bugs. It looks like this hack was coded very carelessly and uncompleted. and I wonder why this could be a HoTM (!?!)
this is a fix done by me, I don't know if there're still any but without these any board installed this can terribly be hacked I believe.

Vb.org doesn't allow people to upload php source file that is edited and it's wise to know what others are telling you what to do instead of doing it thoughtlessly.

i wanna get the Articles and comments to list in the Quick stats at the admin cp.
for example:
New Posts Today 56 New Threads Today 32 Unique Members Today 12
add a line under that to add
New Articles Today xx New Comments Today xx Articls awating Approvel XX
Also, has anyone managed to fix the article count?
i made a test article, and i cant delete it in the usual way... so i went and deleted it through PhpMyAdmin, but it still shows under the category i made it although when i press its not even there...
And another thing is... if i post GIF animations on articles they dont 'animate', they are frozen... only when pressing it they show up.

Hi,
I'm trying to get the 'Featured Article' thing to show up on the index page, but I'm having trouble.
I got the featured_article template to show, but the actual featured article won't.
I've added the following to the index.php page:
$globaltemplates = array(
'FORUMHOME',
'forumhome_event',
'forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost',
'forumhome_forumbit_level1_post',
'forumhome_forumbit_level2_nopost',
'forumhome_forumbit_level2_post',
'forumhome_lastpostby',
'forumhome_loggedinuser',
'forumhome_moderator',
'forumhome_pmloggedin',
'forumhome_subforumbit_nopost',
'forumhome_subforumbit_post',
'forumhome_subforumseparator_nopost',
'forumhome_subforumseparator_post',
'article_featured'
);
then
require_once('./includes/functions_articles.php');
And finally
// ### Start Articles
$featuredarticle = unserialize($datastore['featuredarticle']);
if ($featuredarticle['id'])
{
$feature = $DB_site->query_first("SELECT article.*, articlepost.*, articlecategory.options AS options FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "article AS article
INNER JOIN " . TABLE_PREFIX . "articlepost AS articlepost ON (articlepost.postid = article.firstpostid)
INNER JOIN " . TABLE_PREFIX . "articlecategory AS articlecategory ON (articlecategory.categoryid = article.categoryid)
WHERE article.articleid=$featuredarticle[id]");
}
if (!empty($feature['title']))
{
// do html
if ($feature['options'] & 256)
{
$dohtml = 1;
}
if ($feature['options'] & 512)
{
$dosmilies = 1;
}
// get an attachment, if there's one with a thumnail
$attachment = $DB_site->query_first("SELECT attachmentid FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "articleattachment WHERE articleid=$featuredarticle[id] AND thumbnail_dateline>1 ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 0,1");
if (!empty($attachment['attachmentid']))
{
$GLOBALS['isattachment'] = true;
}
require_once('./includes/functions_bbcodeparse.php');
$feature['postbody'] = truncate_text($feature['postbody'], $vboptions['featuredlength'], 1);
$feature['postbody'] = parse_bbcode2($feature['postbody'], $dohtml, 0, $dosmilies, 1);
eval('$articlecontent .= "' . fetch_template('article_featured') . '";');
}
// ### End Articles
// ### ALL DONE! SPIT OUT THE HTML AND LET'S GET OUTA HERE... ###
eval('$articlecontent .= "' . fetch_template('article_featured') . '";');
eval('$navbar = "' . fetch_template('navbar') . '";');
eval('print_output("' . fetch_template('FORUMHOME') . '");');
However, this only displays the template, like I said. It doesn't show the featured article.
