my new thread button is missing from all the forums, is the failed install a cause of this??
No, vBindex has nothing to do with the newthread code/template.

Hi,
I just installed vbindex on my vbulletin 3.0 gold.
I get the error "Could not find phrase 'vbindex_settings_saved'." and I realy don't know what to do.
Any suggestions?
Best regards,

but i into a problem, the news are not showing up, i updated counters and stuff.
if i use your vbindex.php from RC3 build 7, the news show up, but they don't with your latest vbindex.php. templates are all up to date.
do you have an idea?
NTLDR
03-25-2004, 09:46 AM
The only change to the news is the news character limit, make sure you have either set it to 0 to show the whole post or a number > 0 to show part of the post.

03-25-2004, 10:02 AM
thanks, that (and an other small error i spoted) worked.
the only minor problem is that the version info is some kind of "broken"
it looks like this: vBindex Version %2$s
NTLDR

Either run the installer again and make sure you complete every step or run the following query:
REPLACE INTO datastore (title, data) VALUES ('vbindex_version', '3.0.0 RC4')
Making sure to add a table prefix if you have one.

I have just upgraded to RC4 ,but can't get the latest posts to show up in the centre under the news.
I think this is probably to do with it not being a fresh install, the templates haven't been overwritten.
Can you post the new templates for vbindex, and shell to see if that would work.
Also what is the vbiupgrade.core file that is in the zip?
Cheers
NTLDR
03-25-2004, 06:11 PM
Make sure you have checked the option for the center threads to show and you have updated the VBINDEX template from the VBINDEX__3.0.0_RC4 template (as per the instructions you should have seen during the install).
All the templates can be found within the vbindex_templates.xml file. vbiupgrade.core is the same as vbiupgrade.php, I must have dragged that in too by mistake, its not needed.

I'm a bit confused, does vBindex RC4 mean it's for vBulletin RC4, or just that this is the RC4 release of vBindex?
NTLDR

RC4 means its Release Candidate 4 of vBindex 3.0.0. It will work with any version of vBulletin after 3.0.0 Gamma.

if this modifies anything, can you supply a complete list of things it might modify in the mySQL db, so i can backup certain blocks and so on so i can install this thing properly and not worry about a error....
Could you please add a character count/limit option to the Shout setup just like you have for news posts.
Your Shout is an excellent feature but if someone can overload it with endless garbage it is too risky to occupy an important position on one's home page.

Here's something I just noticed, and wondering if you can give me an explanation why it's like this... But the online users on the vbindex page is different than the forum home page for guests.
I'm logged out and the vbindex page shows 16 online, 3 members 13 guests. I load up the forum homepage at the same time, 21 online, 10 members 11 guests. If you're logged in it shows the same on both.
i have the exact same problem on my board and i know another board with the same thing.
can you look into this or got an hint how to solve this?

Powered by: vBulletin Version 3.0.0 & vBindex Version 3.0.0 RC4

vBindex Copyright © MMII - MMIV Winter Systems.
How much of that is required to be in the footer? Or rather, what parts of that can I remove?

If you have paid for the branding free option of vBulletin you don't need anything other than vBindex Copyright ? MMII - MMIV Winter Systems. Otherwise the only part you can change is Powered by: vBulletin Version 3.0.0 & vBindex Version 3.0.0 RC4 which can be reduced to a minimum of Powered by: vBulletin (however you'll have to contact Jelsoft to confirm that).

Ok, i have spent way too long trying to find a fix for what I want to do. Maybe you can help me out.
Here's what I'm trying to do. I have made a new "extra" page, I created the regular template to house the $php_output and then the php template. I'm trying to make the php code pull a single post and display it's body information into the page. I have had no luck so far. Here is what I currently have.
$query = 'SELECT pagetext FROM post WHERE postid = 20886';
if ($r = mysql_query($query))
{
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array ($r))
{
echo $row['pagetext'];
}
}
What am I missing here? The page loads fine, but the body of the post doesn't output. Any help on this would be greatly appreciate because I just don't know what to do now.

Also you can see I grab my randome poll from practically all the forums bar 4ish... Is this bad for the code? Also, If i set it on to all, and there is a poll in a forum wich not everyone has acsess to, will someone without rights to view that forum be able to view the poll.
And is there a way to set it to all and just leave a few not checked ever....

Its a problem with your database and isn't vBindex or vBulletin related.

The poll like all the other areas uses permissions, if the user doesn't have access to the forum they won't ever see the poll from that forum appear.

ight cool thanx for info nt....when do u plan on releasing a gold release of this...so we dont have nemore updates...
also if i were to install this on a already running forum with its own style, is the script going to inherit the style that the forum already has, or is it going to overwrite the style i already have in place?
and is it easy to upgrade the script if this version is installed, not the beta 1...and if upgraded, does it overwrite anything already set or will it load the colors and settings from headers and so on to the new version...
NTLDR
03-28-2004, 05:51 PM
when do u plan on releasing a gold release of this...so we dont have nemore updates...
Its possible there will be a vBindex 3.0.0 RC5, but that depends on how much more I add. After that vBindex 3.0.0 will be final and work will begin on 3.1.0 or 3.0.1 depending on any bugs found/features added.
also if i were to install this on a already running forum with its own style, is the script going to inherit the style that the forum already has, or is it going to overwrite the style i already have in place?
It imports the vBindex templates to each parent (top level) style and will use your existing CSS styles.
and is it easy to upgrade the script if this version is installed, not the beta 1...and if upgraded, does it overwrite anything already set or will it load the colors and settings from headers and so on to the new version...
If your running vBindex 3.0.0 RC3 or later the upgrade will work flawlessly, no templates will be overwritten if they have been altered by you. If your running a version bettween Beta 1 and RC2 then you'll manually have to work out the template changes or delete them and start fresh. No settings or anything are ever lost/overwritten with any upgrade.

Nope didn't work either. I know when I was uploading the templates again, it told me that the file was create in vb 3 Gamma. And then I just used the Ignore Style Version option to get by that. Maybe since the templates where create in vb3 gamma has something to do with it.

The version it was created in doesn't make any difference, it was downloaded by vB3 Gamma but designed for vB3.0.0. RC5 will be released in about 15mins and you can try importing the templates from that which were created with vB3.0.0.

If you followed the installer verbatim (word for word), then the installer tells you to edit that file and put your path to the admincp in there, which is wrong, it needs the main forums.
For example:
I was told to change the dir path to: /home/............/www/forum/admincp/
That didn't work because then the vbindex.php will then be trying to use the admincp's global.php which is totally NOT the file we want it to use, so remove the admincp/ subdirectory and it should work from there.
i.e.: /home/............/www/forum/
At least that is what I had to do to fix the blank screen issue...
hope it helps.

Need a little help here. I don't like one thing with vBindex does on the front page and that is with the navbar. I have attached a picture of two different screenshots. The first screenshot is of vBindex page and the second is of vBulletin forum page. I have tried to code the custom vBindex navbar but ended up with problems. My question how/where do I code vBindex part to match exactly like how the vBulletin forum page is?

I uninstalled it for the time being, I'll give it one last shot because I really like the portal.
You need to edit the file EXACTLY as it is shown which would have been:
// enter the path to your forums here that you were given during the
// install process
define('CHDIR_PATH', '/home/thewar/public_html');
And not:
// enter the path to your forums here that you were given during the// install processdefine('CHDIR_PATH', '/home/thewar/public_html');

I see that, thanks. It's simply a case of choosing 7 days instead of 5. The new style only works with vBindex 3.0.0 RC4 and above, if you have an older version you can copy the edited calendar_ and vbindex_calendar templates from the vbindex_templates.xml file.
If your using RC4/5 and it doesn't appear like that then the templates will be listed as templatename__3.0.0_RCX in the ACP for you to update your customised ones from.

I've tried going to the Admincp and changing the Forums' URL and the Homepage URL as well, But no use. i even tried to go to the server and make a redirect but it always gives me an error
the vbindex URL is www.mypage.com/vbindex.php
while the for my forums is www.mypage.com/index.php
question..
Shall i make a new folder called forums ? and put the forums folders in it .. and then trying to install the vbindex again to get the new settings ?
will SQL database recognize the changes and work fine ??
other than that .. the polls and the shout box don't seem to work
when i activate the polls on the vbindex .. it gives me a database error ..
and when i enter something in the shout box and click shout .. it refreshed the page but nothing appears then

mypage.com????
lets see, and maybe some help can be provided.
If you want vbindex.php to show up when someone enters your site, then you are going to have to set vbindex.php as your url home page within your servers control panel. Otherwise if you call vbindex....index, your forums will not work.
Yes, the best way is to put forum in a /forum folder, and vbindex.php outside that.

as long as your config.php is pointing to the Proper DB, it will not effect the boards no matter which directory it is in. (if you do it this way, don't forget to update the forums address in your member CP @ vBulletin.com)
I'm guessing you tried to set the portal as your home page right, via the adminCP??
Rename vBindex.php to index.php.
Then
in the adminCP under the option of "Forums Home Page options" may i suggest you set it to a different name other than index(like forums, home, etc...), then all you have to do is rename index.php(webroot directory) to whatever you named it in the admincp, Like so
http://www.nemesisforums.net/neocorteqz/board.png
When visitors view your home page, it will load index.php(which if you renamed vBindex.php) would be your portal page. :)
then all they'd have to do click the link in the navebar at the top to enter the forums, or click on a topic title.
edit: you'd also have to edit the image paths per the Instructions when you first set up the portal, if you were to change the forums directory..

Is this the Currently online users, or the users online today (if shown) part?
Try this edit in vbindex.php find:
$home['onlinemembertotal']--;
break 1;
Replace with:
$home['onlinemembertotal']--;
continue;
That should fix the error if its the currently online users.

Hi!
This is a problem that follows me since vbI RC4.
In the install process of RC5 it loops at step=4 and step=5 it won?t do at all. But even without these steps, it works fine.
The problem comes when i want to export a style updated with vBIndex templates. When re-importing, it always gives me the "invalid XML token" or someting like that.
Also, I have XML files that import well, but give me the following error:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in C:\Documents and Settings\Teilchenbeschleunige.MACHINE\Desktop\site \index.php(1156) : eval()'d code on line 1 Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting ']' in C:\Documents and Settings\Teilchenbeschleunige.MACHINE\Desktop\site \index.php(1181) : eval()'d code on line 42
I?m pretty sure it must have something to do with vBIndex. Because the same style producing the last error works fine with the default index.php
I would be happy if you had a sloution for me, especially for my first problem with the corrupt xml files that refuse to import.
edit:The corrupt xml files either contain something like that: "", replacing a hand of caracters, or something like that:
? ? ?? ? ????? ??w\ ? * _
including the names of current systray processes.

Add it to the vbindex_customblock_php template within the case X part (where X is the number of the custom block) and then use $boxY_php in the custom block template where you want your output (Where Y is the block number).
PHP will only work in phpinclude_start, phpinclude_end, vbindex_customblock_php and vbindex_extra_php_NAME templates.

In the CSS for the table header/cat in the style manager add something similar to the following in the Extra CSS Attribute box:
background-image: url(http://wwww.domain.com/forum/images/bg.jpg);

yeah, I just double checked and the main page is replacing the html codes with innoquous '&' codes where as the forum is display the < > html codes properly. Any idea where that would be happening?
Try this edit, in vbindex.php above:
// ## GET POSTERS AVATAR ##
Add:
$news['pagetext'] = unhtmlspecialchars($news['pagetext']);

i want to have a custom box that only certain usergroups can see.
the custom block like it is, is viewable by all.
thanks for a sweeeeeet hack.
<if condition="is_member_of($bbuserinfo, X)">
html for the block goes here

Making sure you can X to the group you want to be able to see it. For more than one group do is_member_of($bbuserinfo, X) AND is_member_of($bbuserinfo, Y) (etc).

I still cant figure out how to get the code for my gallery script to work. I want it centered in a latest thread block at the bttom of the page. I am php stupid.
In the CSS for the table header/cat in the style manager add something similar to the following in the Extra CSS Attribute box:
Or if you still have vB's default CSS the edit the URL in the background box.wikkid thank you very much. for all the time you put into vBulletin it's easy to see why its' said vB has the best user support. :)

Another request since you guys brought up center block...I like to see a weather block either add or an addon. Mainly since someone create one for vbadvanced.
Just replace the original coding that is in any of your unused custom blocks with the following:
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" class="tborder" width="100%">
<tr>
<td>
<table cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%">
<thead>
<tr>
<td class="tcat" style="text-align: center">
<a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('vbindex_customblock$box')"><img id="collapseimg_vbindex_customblock$box" src="$stylevar/collapse_tcat$collapseimg_vbindex_customblock.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a>
<if condition="!$bbuserinfo['userid']">
<strong>You are not yet a member</strong>
<else />
<strong>Weather For $bbuserinfo[username]</strong>
</if>
</td>
</tr>
</thead>
<tbody id="collapseobj_vbindex_customblock$box" style="$collapseobj_vbindex_customblock">
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
<div class="smallfont">
<if condition="!$bbuserinfo['userid']">
<span class="smallfont">
<a href="$vboptions[bburl]/register.php">Register at this site</a> to show your weather conditions.
</span>
<else />
<if condition="$bbuserinfo[field5] != ''">
<a href="http://www.weatherroom.com/forecast/$bbuserinfo[field5].html"><img src="http://www.weatherroom.com/weather?forecast=zone&hwvtc=black&hwvbg=E1E4F2&pands=$bbuserinfo[field5]&config=png&alt=hwivzone&daysonly=1" alt="Weather for $bbuserinfo[username]" border="0"></a>
<else />
<a href="$vboptions[bburl]/profile.php?do=editprofile">Add Zip Code</A> to show weather conditions.
</if>
</if>
</div>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<br />
Then in your vbindex options tell it that you want to use one more custom black than you have currently, then save, then in the vbindex options again select where you want to put that custom block.
[I]Note: This is just a revamp of the other weather block for vbadvanced. Nothing changed except for the wrapping code to make it a side block for vbindex. All credits go to the author of that addon. If I am wrong in posting this, then feel free to have it removed.

1) I had vBi 3.0RC3 installed and wanted to automatically upgrade to vBi 3.0RC5. The upgrade installer went fine (no errors). But it didn't do anything to my vbindex_* templates. It also didn't tell me that I had customized templates since 3.0RC3 (although I have customized them).
2) Confused, I loaded the vbiupgrade script again and chose uninstall. Well, to my surprise it didn't do anything to my templates again, there were all still there, even after the uninstall.
So are 1) and 2) both related to bugs in the install/uninstall script or am I doing something wrong? If they are bug-related, I am kinda hesitant to use the installer script at all on my live-system (who knows what other bugs are in there). In this case, perhaps someone can explain how to manually upgrade vBi instead?

It's actually not too hard, first there are six already available to you, just go to you vbindex options, tell the system how many you want to use, then choose which ones you want to use. (i.e. I want three custom blocks, so I tell the system 3, then I can choose either custom blocks 1, 2, or 3, 4, 5, and 6 won't show until I tell the system to use that many.)
Then go to the associated custom block template and adjust your HTML code there.
To add more than that, just go into your vbindex.php and have it preload the next custom block number, and then in your templates add a new custom block with the next highest number and then copy the code from another custom code original and yer good to go.
I have over simplified this, let me know if you don follow.

Are there any size constraints that would limit how much code could be in a vbindex custom block? I'm doing "On this Date..." quote system for my website and I'm going to have to have a paragraph or so of text for every day of the year.
I'm doing it in html and not pulling it from a database.. not much of a programmer.

You should have vbindex_*__3.0.0_RC5 templates listed for all those templates you had previously customised. There was a minor bug in the uninstaller that ment only one vBindex template would get deleted.
Edit line 195 of vbiupgrade.php and replace:
WHERE title like LCASE('vbindex')
With:
WHERE title like LCASE('vbindex%')

None currently, although I'm sure more options and features will be added to them. At the moment its possible for users to easily add content to them due to the dynamic nature introduced in vBindex 3.0.0 RC4.

vBindex uses a different navbar template (vbindex_navbar) if you have edited the standard vB one you need to edit this too. The blue should be one of the vB Menu CSS classes towards the bottom.

I had the same issue with previously customized templates. What do I do with the template included with this install? Do I copy and paste the code into my customized templates?
I've also noticed that "Members Online Today" shows ALL of my users which I know is not correct. That is also happening on the main page of my Admin CP. It's showing ALL posts and threads as new today.
One last thing, and I think it's related to the calendar template issue I'm having, but when I click on "April" on my calendar it's adding the beginning of my site url twice which is causing a "page cannot be found" error.

The code works fine, and makes the weather block but when you click on it you are taken to the user CP to add your zip code and I don't see a place for that. Any ideas?
Thanks.
For those who do want to know though. pretty simple, just make a new custom userfield (Either in options, really any place you want though), and in the code wherever it says $bbuserinfo[field5], change the code to whatever the relevent field number is (ie mine is field8). i even made this part of the registration option so they may imput it at registration. Hidden from viewing though. :0

You should overwrite or compare the default vBindex ones with your customised ones to make sure all the features are avalible to you.

If it happens in the ACP too then its probably some problem with vBulletin itself.

NTLDR,
Is there any reason why you moved the headinclude/navbar/pm_popup_scripts templates out to vbindex_headinclude/navbar/pm_popup_scripts, since RC4? The problem I see is that whenever Jelsoft releases an upgrade with changes in those templates, one must apply the changes twice (normal and vbindex_headinclude/navbar/pm_popup_scripts).

i tried to include the code vom the vbulletin index.php for the next 5 days events, but without success ;(
but i think, that a "show today's events box" would be really great :)

Because the majority of people who install this hack don't know howto make the numerous changes to these templates so I decided this method was best for the majority.

If it happens in the ACP too then its probably some problem with vBulletin itself.
Any reason why it would start after I installed vbindex?
ETA: It is working normally today. Was it just because it was the first day of using vbindex so everything was new to it?

vBindex doesn't touch any of the code used in the ACP to work out whos been online in a day.

Just edit the VBINDEX template and put $home[news] after the latest threads table.

So is there any thoughts of multi-installs ?
IE: install to sub folders in a site each install with different settings: news forum, poll, ect. I was thinking of a portal system for many subjects all pulling data from 1 forum install.
$site / articles
$site / gallery
$site / subject whatever
Each install with its own "settings" and homepage.

I noticed that when I:
Enable News Posters Avatar -->Yes
It will post the avatar in the Welcome Box, but when it isn't enabled the Welcome Box avatar doesn't show up. Perhaps this only happens with the news poster's account...
Even when I enabled:
Show Users Avatar -->Yes
Is there anyway around this?
Thanks,

What version of vB are you using? And do you store avatars in the database or as files? And is your avatar a custom one or a pre-defined avatar?

Sorry,
We run vb3,
We store the avatars in images/avatars and import them into VB through the admin panel.
It was a predefined avatar that I had previously uploaded to the images/avatars directoy and I imported it using the admin panel.

Use the url to the smilies, instead of the path - worked for me.
Hello ? This can't be true. I have to manually edit all the 60 Standard Smilies ? This can work for some people but we proudly present 1001 Smilies on our domain. How should i handle this please ? I do not want to manually edit 1001 + 60 Smilies on my own.
Hack creator ? Could you please take one action item to find a better solution here for this problem ?
Hint: The old vbhome lite version had a replacement variable like {imageshome} for each style which solved this problem. But with your hack this does not work yet.
Any comments ?

Addition to my last request:
Performance is also a big thing here. For every http:// link in your source code the client browser opens a complete new session over http. This is a big performance overhead for our amount of smilies. Please help to find a better solution.
Thanks.

NTLDR, instead of having the user alter his smilies, have you thought of applying a regex on the text containing smilies (add the full url dynamically to them) before "you eval" the templates with it?

Thanks. You got it.
NTLDR ? The main reason for not willing to alter all the smilies to the full URL is the performance issue. Again ... if you alter all smilies to http://blablabla/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif from the original /forum/images/smilies/smile.gif you increase the connections to the server dramatically.
I hope this has made my problem clearer. Do you know what i am talking about now ?

I had the same issue. Create a new info in the news forum and this text will be shown on the vbindex. Don't know why but any new thread is fully shown.

Its impossible for me to know the URL to the smilies hence the user needs to adjust them either manually or via the script Natch provided. Plus I feel that having to edit the smilies once at install time greatly out ways the extra processing to search/replace every single page load.

Then the forum smilies don't work any more. But brought up a good point.
Question: How about replacing the current smilies location from let's say ./images/smilies/smilie.gif to {smiliefolder}/smilie.gif.
Now the only thing we need is somehow to determine if a user is in the root / or if he is the /forum directory. If we can do this then it would be very easy.
One way could be in a javascript to define SMILIEFOLDER as a variable and to set for the vbindex a different javascript source file then to the forum. But this would not be best way but the easiest.
Please tell me your thoughts.

I recommend using either Natch's script to update all the image paths or manually do it. You of course are free to use whichever method you see fit.

It's trying to load from this URL, which is obviously not going to work:
http://www.bowlandcentral.com/forum/vbindex.php/images/smilies/smile.gif
Its something to do with the URL you use to visit the site, using http://www.bowlandcentral.com/forum/vbindex.php/ results in the incorrect path for the smilies where as http://www.bowlandcentral.com/forum/vbindex.php (note the lack of the final slash) the smilies work correctly.
