It means if you use this hack, click the install button you'll see at the top of the page :)

?? I still don't get it, I clicked the install button at your original post and it brought me to the 'smilies' page (?) Anyway, thanks again for the hack. Liking it so far.

Is there any way of aligning the boxes on the right and making them all the same width?

Thanks

The sidebars dynamicly adjust in RC3, however you can edit the template to make it wider:

In the vbindex_side template, find:

<td width="150"

Replace with:

<td width="<if condition="($vbindex['options'] & VBI_SHOWCALENDAR) && $currentside == 'right'">170<else />150</if>"

This will make the right side wider iff you have the calendar enabled.

Hi, I have a question about your hack. Is there any way I can add my own, custom box to it? I run an online comic, and if I put this up on my front page I'd like to be able to link to my comic script, and put a thumb nail in with a title. is that possible? (I'm currently using RC2, and will be installing RC3 shortly)

NTLDR
01-08-2004, 09:42 PM
If by comic script you mean PHP code then you would have to do some alterations as you can't use PHP code in the vBindex templates. If however its plain HTML you need to add then its just a matter or pasting it in one of the vbindex_customblock_ templates.

I have a dumb question. I just downloaded vb3 release canidate 2. so i downloaded the rc2 version of vbindex
in the upload text file in the zipped folder it just says "File list and upload locations:
vbindex.php"

so what folders do i install the files under?

RC3 install went great. The only problem i have is a broken image in my post icons. When i right click on the broken_image to find the link, it is doubling the path..like this

www.dmaclan.com/forums/images/icons/http://www.dmaclan.com/forums/images/icons/icon_4.gif[/url]

I upgraded from RC2, and i had no image problems under that. This is only in the latest threads bar.

I still can't log in through the nav bar. The cookie path has always been set to /, and I just went through the template again. Still sends me straight to the forum index with no 'thanks for logging in page'. Can login through any other login forms in vbulletin.

I've not changed anything regarding the latest threads in RC2. Id check that you have the path set correctly for the default icon in the vB Options if its enabled and that your icons follow the format of images/icons/icon_x.gif.

deathemperor1st: RC3 has the option for a full 7 day calendar to be shown :)

bob46802: All the install intructions are in the first post, if you want more detailed instructions go for RC3 :)

Rushty: I can't confirm this. Note that the events only appear after the cron job has run, so if its recently been added that will be why

whens rc3 NOT TESTING version out ?

NTLDR
01-09-2004, 09:46 AM
The non-testing version is likly to be the same as whats here already. I just wanted to offer both for a while to make sure that there were no major bugs in RC3, which there doesn't seem to be. That was the only reason for marking it as 'Testing' :)

I'm running RC2 on VB3.0.0 RC2 do i need to remove the vBindex table modifications in MySQL also? apart from deleting the RC2 templates.

The RC2 install was realy picky on existing tables and keys.

BTW It's the first hack I ever put on my forums and it's great.

Of course I was able to see index a couple minutes ago. Now there is some weird cookie error.

I surely hope this hasn't been posted. ;)

I'm playing with and getting a rather wicked display problem on vB3 RC2 [upgrade from a vB2 new install/DB import] while using vBindex 3.

I've imported the existing db from another site so users maintain their information and the threads are still alive, and I've verified the threads work and avatars are still visible.

However, when viewing under vBindex, the newsbit topic displays, the posting time displays.. everything.. except the avatar and the actual post.

And to make my head scratch a little more, the logged in user's avatar doesn't display for them in the information bit.

Am I totally missing something here? ;)

** EDIT: Okay, I partially have fixed my own problem. The avatars were still pulling off the existing site, which I've fixed with a data dump into a directory. However vBindex is still reporting [ hover over X'd avatar -> properties -> look at the link it shows ] they're located in the db. <scratchscratch>

But the threads still remain a problem. Strangely enough, on the previous test board I had with vBIndex 2 [fresh install, no db added], the threads didn't display there either.. and they were being called correctly in the templates.

Strange, strange.

Hi guys!
Yesterday i installed vBindex 3 RC 3 and its real sweet.

There is only one thing im missing ;) It doesnt seam to show my additional posticons?

Btw, you wrote in the installer that you have to use full path to smilies (http://domain/etc), is it the same thing with posticons?

EDIT: That was my bad, i updated the post-icon but not the thread-icon ;) stupid me.

Another question: Is it possible to parse the poll text for smileys? and other bbcode? Because the smileys show up in the forumpoll but not at the first page.

here is what i noticed

on vbindex, when it calls for the avatar image
http://www.yourdomain.com/forums/image.php?userid=X&dateline=DDDDDDDDD

on the memberlist page, it calls
http://www.yourdomain.com/forums/image.php?u=X&dateline=DDDDDDDDD

guess we have to use "u" instead of "userid"

Harlequin
01-10-2004, 05:10 PM
Holy crap, that worked excellent with the avatars.

Further detail --

In vbindex.php, find:

$news['avatarurl'] = "$vboptions[bburl]/image".SCRIPT_EXTENSION."?user=$news[postuserid]&amp;dateline=$news[customdateline]";

Replace with:

$news['avatarurl'] = "$vboptions[bburl]/image".SCRIPT_EXTENSION."?u=$news[postuserid]&amp;dateline=$news[customdateline]";

Worked for me like a charm and now everything is displaying AOK .. or appears to be anyway.

Ty Ceech.

But strangely, I'm still having the noshow of the news threads problem..

I have the same issue as mentioned earlier in this thread.

My post icons are directed to:
http://www.kctalk.com/forums/http://www.kctalk.com/forums/images/icons/icon1.gif
instead of just once where it should work.

I checked my admincp for the path of the icon there, and it is just showing images/icons/icon1.gif and not that long string that is up there.

Anyone that has had this problem or if anyone knows what it is to correct it, please let me know!

NTLDR

However, when viewing under vBindex, the newsbit topic displays, the posting time displays.. everything.. except the avatar and the actual post.

Update the thread counters in the Admin CP, there seems to be issues regarding old posts from vB2 moved to vB3.

Avatar issues: u is the same as userid in the URL they both mean the same thing and should both work.

is it possible to put content other than the news post in that section? and to make multiple pages?
if it is Ill probably switch over to this

Yes and yes. To change the middle content just edit the VBINDEX template and add your HTML. To create extra pages add a template called vbindex_extra_PAGENAME and view it via vbindex.php?page=PAGENAME (replacing PAGENAME with the name of your page).

I think i have the answer to your post icons not showing.

Look for this line in your vbindex_latestthreadbit template created by vbindex in your style manager.

Look for this line of text:

<img src="$vboptions[bburl]/$thread[threadiconpath]"

Remove this bit $vboptions[bburl]/

That cures the problem, as long as you have already changes your image paths as it says in the readme file.

Hope this helps

Is it necessary to update the templates in all of the styles before this works? I wouldn't think so, but it isn't working for me. All I get is a blank page. The vbidex.php page at my site, uspoliticsonline.com (http://www.USPoliticsOnline.com/vbindex.php)

The install seemed to go okay after I realized why it wasn't working at first. Forget to upload the upgraded.php file. After doing that it went fine and took me to the vbioptions page. I filled in the page and clicked save. It reloaded with the new settings. Thank you for making the hack, I am anxious to see it in action. :)

NTLDR
01-11-2004, 07:22 PM
The templates should go into each parent style and all of its children should inherit the templates. Can you see them in the style manager in the ACP?

Also make sure you edited vbiconfig.php as per the first page in the install process.

marcjd
01-11-2004, 08:04 PM
I wanted to try it out first so I only added the template mods to the main default style. I need to make all of my styles the child of a main style because doing these little mods seem to take forever when I have several styles. Anyway, I did double-checkthe config file and it seems correct per the instructions.

// enter the path to your forums here that you were given during the
// first step of the install process
define('CHDIR_PATH', '/home/politics/public_html/forums');

// enter the extension you use with your vBulletin files
// this is most likly the default .php entered
define('SCRIPT_EXTENSION', '.php');

?>

Thanks again.

How To Add Extra (Non-Dynamic) Pages With vBindex 3.0.0

Lets use the example of a copyright page. In the Style Manager create a template called vbindex_extra_copyright and add the following HTML too it:

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" class="tborder" width="100%">
<tr>
<td>
<table cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%">
<tr>
<td class="tcat">
<div>$vboptions[bbtitle] Copyright Statement</div>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
<div>
Replace this with your copyright statement text.
</div>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<br />

Then visit vbindex.php?page=copyright and you should see you copyright statement you have justed added :)

NTLDR
01-12-2004, 02:13 PM
How To Add Extra (Non-Dynamic) Pages With vBindex 3.0.0 RC3 or above.

This feature that allows you to easily add your own PHP to the extra pages (not custom blocks at present).

Lets say you wanted a top ten posters page:

Add a template called vbindex_extra_top10 with the folloing HTML:

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" class="tborder" width="100%">
<tr>
<td>
<table cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%">
<tr>
<td class="tcat">
<div>Top 10 Core Forums Posters - PHP Driven vBindex Extra Pages Example</div>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
<div>
$php_output
</div>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<br />

This is the main HTML for the content area on the page. Now create a template called vbindex_extra_php_top10 this will contain the raw PHP code, just as if it was a PHP file. (NOTE: Upon saving this template you WILL get an error, ignore it and press continue. RC4 will contain instructions to prevent this). Add the following code to it:

$users = $DB_site->query("SELECT username, userid, posts FROM ".TABLE_PREFIX."user ORDER BY posts DESC LIMIT 10");

while($user = $DB_site->fetch_array($users)) {
echo '<div><a href="'.$vboptions['bburl'].'/member.php?userid='.$user['userid'].'">'.$user['username'].'</a> ('.$user['posts'].')</div>';
}

Note that you need to echo the content out.

Then visit vbindex.php?section=top10 and you should see a list of the top 10 posters on your forum. Take alook at our demo here: http://www.coreforums.net/index.core?section=top10

If you could add a couple of lines to the top of vbindex.php after:

require_once('./includes/functions_user'.SCRIPT_EXTENSION);

Add:

if ($bbuserinfo['userid'] == X) {
echo '<pre>';
print_r($_REQUEST);
echo '</pre>';
}

Replacing X with your userid and look for the following output at the very top (you'll only see it with your account):

Array
(
[page] => copyright
[bblastvisit] => 1071666760
[bblastactivity] => 1071666772

You should see aload of stuff similar to that, in particular in whats listed to you see a [page] => copyright line?

Either use a conditional in the template:

<if condition="$bbuserinfo['usergroupid'] == 6">SHow the content<else />don't show it

Or use the dynamic pages version and have similar code but in PHP. IMO the template conditional is simplest.

It is default, I'd assume you have upgraded from vB2. Just goto the Update Counters page in the vB ACP and update the thread ones and the posts should appear. It seems to be a common problem with the vB upgrade/install scripts.

You'd need a seperate page to get the files and "pass" them to the users who are valid, just like the attachments. A quick way to do this would be to create a downloads forum that is not show but contains posts with attachments that could be linked to via the vBindex page.

NTLDR

The attachment limit is based on the vB option, or your PHP configuration. (If your PHP confiured limit is lower than the vB one, thats the limit that counts).

You'll need a dedicated server with access to php.ini or httpd.conf. Its the upload_max_filesize setting you'd need to edit which defaults to 2M.

new threads since last visit is pretty pointless since everytime a user makes a post in a different thread that was already started it counts it as a new thread.

so if make a post in a thread that was 2 days old

it will show

new post: 1
new threads: 1

instead of:

new post: 1
new threads: 0

i see you are using one query, but i think its almost impossible unless you run two queries, one to get the count of new posts, and another for new threads.

NTLDR
01-14-2004, 07:17 PM
Hence why the default phrase says "New & Updated Threads" ;)

I've a plan to make the new threads/posts report a true value all the time, so if you read a post the new post count decreases, however I'm not sure how efficient it will be.

Alright I gotta question about the extra pages feature, I took some screen shots of how It looks then edited them to how I want them to look. Basically when someone goes to one of the extra pages I want it to not show the two blocks "shoutbox" & "what do you think of the site?" so that the extra page can expand more without making the rest of the blocks bigger. (I know my cut & paste job wasn't that great but that's basically how I want it to look)

Heres a new one for you though lol... I have 2 forums sending news to vbindex... Forum 1 and forum 67. All is fine. I excluded a forum (29) and this stopped the news from forum 1 from showing up. I tried to exclude a different forum number and same thing. I switched the order of the news forums from 1,67 to 67,1 and forum 1 still didnt show up, forum 67 did. Both forums show up fine as long as no forums are excluded. Strange. Do you get any text on the next step button at the bottom?

I can't think why nothing at all shows, there are only so many reasons why that could occur, 1) there isn't a step 7 in that file, well there is by default, 2) its somehow 'died' before getting to the xml_import_templates function, 3) it 'dies' at the very start of that function. All three of which I don't think are very likly.

I'd recomend clicking next and continuing, at the end see if they are in the ACP, and if the other steps execute correctly. It won't do any harm continuing if it hasn't imported the templates correctly.

Yeah I know, that's what I did, I went all the way thinking that there shouldn't be any text anyways. But alas, no vBIndex templates or phrases (although all steps before step 7, I believe, imported correctly.)

NTLDR

There is only one real difference with how the steps are done in vbiupgraded.php so its worth a shot, find and replace all instances of (in vbiupgraded.php and re-run vbiupgraded.php?step=7):

IMPORT_TEMPLATES_STEP with 7
IMGDIR_EDIT_STEP with 8
REBUILD_STYLES_STEP with 9
IMPORT_PHRASES_STEP with 10
FINAL_STEP with 11

Thats all I can think of right now, although I will investigate further.

Thats a simple template mod :) No file edits needed.

What exactly do you mean 'a simple template mod'? I would like to add this feature in one of the custom side blocks in Vbindex, but the instructions are written for a different setup.
I know it's not your hack, but if you have some experience installing this I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

That same error happened to me yesterday, but my install worked perfectly after I tinkered around in phpmyadmin. Turned out that a mysql entry already existed for something at step 6 (I believe I may have clicked the button twice for that step, so I probably sent the queries through twice), and every step after that didn't do anything until I went back and corrected it. It was rather a pain in the neck, but with the hack working now, I couldn't be happier.

One thing I wish were possible however. On our index page, when I enable the calender showing weekends, only it gets wider. It'd be helpful if all the boxes on the side it's on were widened when that option was selected. As it stands now, we're going to have to do it through template altering.

Only phpinclude_start and phpinclude_end can contain PHP. In vBindex RC3 you can add templates for PHP code for the extra pages (vbindex_extra_php_X) however no other templates can contain raw PHP (excluding the <if> conditionals).

How can I make it so that if a usergroup is not allowed to view forums, they can still view the vBindex as if they had regular permissions? (So then news would be available, etc. because if I deny permission to all my forums to Guests, then they can't see news articles on vBIndex as well.)

NTLDR

I assume you have it set so guests can view the board, but not view threads, if so find:

AND forumid NOT IN (".implode(',', $limitfids).")

And remove that line, this will remove all permissions for the news posts, so anyone will see any posts within the news forums.

You can do it with a query, however I'm not sure what it is. If they are all in a common folder then I'd just add a new replacement for each style to replace images/smilies with /forums/images/smilies for example.

Alternativly you can find in vbindex.php:

$shout['shout'] = fetch_censored_text(parse_bbcode($shout['shout']));

And replace with:

$shout['shout'] = parse_bbcode($shout['shout'], 0, 0);

You have to buffer the output and then add the variable to the template, IIRC the $php_output variable is already in the header template and there is an example of what to do in the phpinclude_start template.

It seems to work fine on my site, I'd check your vbindex_side template and make sure it has the following in it:

<!-- start side ($currentside) -->
<td width="<if condition="$vbindex['options'] & VBI_SHOWCALENDAR"><if condition="$vbindex['options'] & VBI_SHOWWEEKENDS">230"<else />170"</if><else />150"</if> style="vertical-align: top">
<if condition="$currentside == 'left'">
$home[leftblocks]
</if>

<if condition="$currentside == 'right'">
$home[rightblocks]
</if>
</td>
<!-- end side ($currentside) -->

The $vbindex['options'] <if> blocks are the important parts that adjust the width.

If I go to the Style manager and bring up the 'Main CSS' the correct paths are already in there for the table header and category strips, and it works fine in the Forum pages. Installation/Upgrade

See the READ_ME_1ST.txt file include in the zip for more detailed install instructions and details of where to upload the files. Then point your browser at http://www.mydomain.com/forums/install/vbiupgrade.php.

If UPGRADING I recommend deleting all your old vBindex templates before upgrading as I've made changes to ensure you won't lose templates with future upgrades. The query bellow will delete all templates starting with vbindex.

DELETE FROM template WHERE title like ('vbindex%');

Support

The offical place for support is at Core Forums (http://www.coreforums.net/?coreid=2), please PM myself or hellsatan with your Core Forums username to become a licenced member with access to a wider range of information, addons and early released. Support will also be given in this thread.

vBindex is Copyright MMII - MMIV Winter Systems, you may not distribute in part or whole any portion of the source code (apart from in this thread or at Core Forums) or any file included in the zip (Unless you are posting a language translation of vbindex_phrases.xml in this thread or at Core Forums). Portions Copyright MM - MMIV Jelsoft Enterprises Limited. Both the Jelsoft vBulletin and the Winter Systems vBindex Copyright notice in the footer must stay in place for any page powered by vBindex.

vBindex is *FREE*, please have the courtesy click install if you use this hack, thank you :)

Okay, NTLDR,

I got a doozy for you...

I have a test site up. And 3 styles. I edited 1 style (to ensure it works fine) according to the 3 html files that was in the the .zip file I downloaded.

Then I changed to the style I edited.

There's a PM loop going on.

Saying, "You have a private message..." while there is no private messages, old or new.

thoughts??

I know.

That's what's wrong, lol.

It's looping...

Also, I think there's a smalllllllllllllllllll bug, not sure, but it might be me. The link on the vbindex.php for Usercp doesn't redirect to the usercp.php inside /forums/

I'm still trying to figure out why it is looping.

You should put the text that is in the html files into a .txt file.

Great hack. Really great.

I really enjoy the 'random' poll feature. However, is their someway to limit the date as to how far it goes back on the poll? I'm getting posts pulled up from ages ago. Also, being able to highlight the title of the poll and have a 'thread preview' would be pretty nifty as well (for the polls that don't make a tonne of sense without some information).
