I've got a problem with youtube.
I suddenly only see an icon with the link behind it, but film won't embed.

When I try to embed this link for example:

When I put my mouse over it, it says:

How can I fix this? I already tried reinstalling the product and also deleting all definitions and importing new ones.

My own question regarding self hosted video (i.e., wmv) on what folks may be doing here in conjunction with AME.

Currently, I have a /videos directory for which I upload such files. Then use the AME internal linking to present. Recommendations on implementing access to non-admins? Just create an FTP account for that folder only? Is there a hack (e.g., downloadsII) that could be mated in combination for a non-admin (general ugroup)?

I've used this free script as a nifty way for users to upload their own files to one of my directories via the web (no ftp needed):

Ok. I'm running AME 2.5.6, which differs from your 2.5.
I'm running that one too. It just says 2.5 here on vb.org but the downloaded version is 2.5.6 so we have the same one.

The only difference between us is that I had no validation code and my regular expression was slightly different from yours, like this:

The replacement code was the same. I now took over all your code, have "extract destination data" set to "yes" and saved a post, but the same problem still occurs.
I already tried several solutions given from page 92-100, nothing works.

Strange thing is that also with some older posts, the images are visible, but are present 2 times with some code in between. The solution given to that problem however, does not work either.
So thank you for trying to help, but it seems not as easy as to read some posts here to find the solution I guess. Tried that already.:)

Then about Downloads II. You could use that to provide certain upload rights. The problem however would be linking to those files then, because your users would not know the filename on the server.
For example, if you upload a file called mymusic.mp3 with DownloadsII, the file will be called something like 4472-mymusic.mp3 because Downloads II will generate a number for every upload made and they all com into 1 directory.
So I guess you can probably better try a script like BirdoPrey5 suggested.

OK cool... so I decided to start my test with an Embed Code for www.jigzone.com - Embedded Jigsaw Puzzle...

The URL to a puzzle is like this:

NOPE...

Instead of getting an embedded puzzle I get simply an all text URL not even a link, just the URL as plain text.

When I look in the source code the AME template is never invoked...

I've narrowed it down to a problem with the "z" near the end (z=6). If I remove the z from the regular expression AND the URL it works! But I need the z because I need to specify the second parameter (6) in this case.

Anyone got any ideas? I really thought I had these regex's down pat until this roadblock.

Oh, one more thing, I changed 'z' in the regex to [\w] and it partially works... The puzzle embeds but not correctly, the z parameter isn't parsed in the embed code and ;z=6 in plain text displays immediately after every puzzle... It's outside the AME template in the source code and I have no clue where it's coming from... it almost looks like a bug in AME maybe...

Eureka... I had to realize that after vBulletin mangled the URL it changed the "&" to "&amp;"so I had to adjust the regular expression to work with either/or... Working great now.

Well since I mentioned it I'll put the file here I'll also stop polluting Digital Jedi's thread with this stuff.

Jigzone Embed - when you make a puzzle go to "Open Puzzle" copy the URL of the open puzzle in the browser and paste it into your post... Change the last number (usually 6) to whatever number corresponds to to the puzzle type you want. (0 = 48 piece jigsaw)

I noticed when someone links to an article on ESPN it tried to embed a video even though it's not a video just an article, so a big ugly black box shows up instead of a link. Is there a way around this? I had to disable ESPN videos because of this.
It should be noted that AME can be disabled per post by the user posting, for this very reason. I'll try to take a look at it and see why articles are now converting.

I haven't been able to work on 4.0 definitions in quite some time, but last I heard, development for 4.0 stopped a few months ago. I don't know that the 4.0 version of AME works with new boards anymore.


flickr isn't working right for me... I had to disable all flckr definitions... links to flickr images were being show as if they were videos which then didn't work.
Flickr hasn't been very keen on maintaining a strict URL structure. If they keep this up, either I'm going to have to just instruct folks to turn AME off when posting pics, or drop the Flickr definitions altogether.

Black Tiger, I'm certain I posted a reply to you last night, along with some others, but my post seems to have vanished. Hrm...

In short, I said I only got a chance to skim some posts, but it sounds to me like you have more than one YouTube definition. Your fixing one, but the other one is still trying to convert at the same time. Remember that when you upgrade or reinstall AME it reinstalls the default Amazon and YouTube definitions, which are both outdated. My definition should be the one with (With Deep Linking Support - Seconds Only) in the description. You should delete/disable the other one. (It should probably have a funny looking key name and be way near the bottom.) Note that I'm not referring to the definitions with (YouTube) in parenthesis in the title. Those are fine.

This is another one I was sure I replied to last night, but is gone now. Gah...

Fox News just appears to need an update. MSNBC is still working, but the link you posted is not a video URL, but an article page with a video on it. AME converts specific URL strings, not just a page that happens to have media embedded in it. It identifies pages based on the URL and not the content of the page. Hence, no conversion here.

Those are mine, so they're fine. You say you wiped the definitions and did a fresh import? It should be working now. You'll have to test it by posting a new YouTube video or re-editing an existing post.

This is a carryover moved to this thread on DJ's request. I'm finding that the Amazon definition only works for certain types of Amazon links. For example, if you search an item on Google and copy the hyperlink from the results, it usually works fine. That is generally because the link is relatively short, ending in the product ID number, and so the definitions parse and append the affiliate tag ?tag=yourtag-20 correctly.

The problem is with other links, like those you often get from a search at Amazon.com. These results have longer URLs, usually containing a ? in them, like the phrase ?ie=UTF . If you append the affiliate tag above, like the one included in the definition, it does not validate. In this case, if you append the tag &tag=yourtag-20 it does validate.

You can't simply change to &tag, though, because it won't validate with the shorter Amazon URLs. Yes, if you do the URLs yourself, you can always get it to work, but the point is that you want it to automatically append a valid tag to any amazon link a member posts and you don't know what type of format it will have.

So far, my solution is to append the following tag to any type of Amazon URL:

?tag=yourtag-20&tag=yourtag-20

This seems kind of redundant, but so far it has validated in the Amazon link checker utility on all the tests I've tried, including when it gets redirected to a mobile site on a phone.

Are you adding the tag to the URL your posting, or is this tag in the definition itself? If your using my Amazon defs, my old Amazon tag is still in there, so it would need to be edited. As I recall, if you don't take my tag out and try to use appended tags when posting, you run into that issue.

If not, can you give me some of the links in question you've run into problems with so I can test them. I know I worked on Amazon recently and made some significant changes to the RegEx, but I can't quite remember what that was due to the aforementioned poor record keeping.

Okay, you have something going on deeper than just a definitions issue. When I wiped your definitions set, the post still tried to convert. With no definitions. That's definitely not normal. I suspect something happened during your installation. What I suggest you try to do is reupload all the files again and reimport the product as if you were doing an upgrade. Delete the default definitions, then do a test post, with no definitions installed, and see if it still tries to convert. If so, you may need to uninstall and do a clean install.

I am using the same definition as BirdOPrey posted in that link that I think is the same as yours (unless you updated since my last download), except, of course, I substitiuted my affiliate tag in the replacement box.

So, for example, the AME replacement validates fine for me with this link found via Google searching for "nuclear duct tape"

It does not validate if I copy the same search results from Amazon and get this URL:

I hope that all made sense. I'm not an expert with how AME works or the definitions, just seeking the optimal way to do Amazon affiliate codes;-)

Edit- Verified my definition is exactly the same as the one in the current download, except I'm using the "double" replacement tag above now. Prior to that it was identical except that I used my tag instead of yours in the replacement area.

@DJ - I got it fixed.
The update method (reuploading files and re-importing/overwriting xml file) did not fix the problem.
I had to really uninstall Ame 2.5.6. After that, I reinstalled 2.5.6, removed the standard definitions and imported these here.
After that everything worked again with new posts. With old posts I have to use the edit and save button for the movie window to appear.

I presume I can only fix old post by editting and saving?

Best I could tell "Local Links" used to be included but they aren't in the latest definition anymore. I don't know why, may have been causing errors. But if you had an old version that's probably what was doing it.

I am using the same definition as BirdOPrey posted in that link that I think is the same as yours (unless you updated since my last download), except, of course, I substitiuted my affiliate tag in the replacement box.

So, for example, the AME replacement validates fine for me with this link found via Google searching for "nuclear duct tape"

It does not validate if I copy the same search results from Amazon and get this URL:

Now, if I change the replacement definition from ?tag=affiliate-20 to ?tag=affilliate-20&tag=affiliate-20 then it works in both cases, though it seems like there could be a better way.

I hope that all made sense. I'm not an expert with how AME works or the definitions, just seeking the optimal way to do Amazon affiliate codes;-)

Edit- Verified my definition is exactly the same as the one in the current download, except I'm using the "double" replacement tag above now. Prior to that it was identical except that I used my tag instead of yours in the replacement area.

Unfortunately, yes. Posts that were using your temporary BBCode, however, can be changed in the AME CP's Tools menu. That was a very unusual error, but I could tell something was wrong when I cleaned out the defs and the product kept trying to convert it. It's like a definition got "stuck". Hope that corrects your issues.

If you had Local Hosted media definitions installed, it would cause a conflict. Then when media was posted, both definitions would try to convert in the post.

The reason you try not to be too broad with definitions your distributing to the public is you never know when you don't want a page converting or you want a particular URL string to do something else. Case in point, I like having user profile links auto convert. I did not like that it put "Username- City of Gamers Online Community". I just wanted the username and I didn't want to change title of my pages just to accommodate that. The same with thread titles. I would get the full name of the thread and the full name of my site, and again, I didn't want to pull my site name out of the pages, and I doubted that users of the def would, too. Also, people might not want every page on their forum to convert, just certain aspects. Granular control seemed to make sense in this case.

This is a totally new definition, folks. So if you use it, keep in mind some of your older posts might not change over to it. It's cleaner and easier on the eyes than the original. You also need to add the following image to your images/misc folder.

Should no longer conflict with video URLs. (Photostreams) embeds the default photostream in a user profile, while (Sets) embeds the photostreams from user Sets.

Updated def seems to work 100% of the time, but occasionally can't pull a video thumbnail. Will ignore a YouTube video and post an auto formated link instead.

Fox News
Your Fox News (Old) definition is useless now, so you can delete it, if you want. I'm actually quite proud of this one, but it's for totally technical, geeky reasons.

Delete your JustinTV (Live 2) definition, as this one covers it now.

Photobucket (Videos)
Should no longer conflict with image URLs and should keep your old FLV videos embedded if you haven't changed anything since last update.

You'll need both of these, one for embedding new clips and the other to make sure your old clips remain embedded.

Three definitions required for this one. I'm still not sure if this is fully International yet. Did quite a bit of testing, but eBay is vast and easy to miss variations in the URL strings. There are a lot of combinations so I can't test them all, but so far I have since confirmed that my dual tag both validates and gives affiliate order credit to a previously unused tag, this was true from a desktop and via iPhone with a mobile redirect that further alters the URL.

It shouldn't matter what folder they're in, as long as you only changed the name, and didn't add the domain extension or anything like that. In other words, all you should have added was "site", not "site.com" or anything else. And, of course, the file URLs should end in .mp3.

Are you sure sure you're importing the definitions from this thread, or one of my old threads? How many definitions do you have checked when you finish the import? What is the one definition that seems to go through, but doesn't show up?

Let me know what you come up with. I worked on Amazon for a few hours and came up with workable definitions with the right URL, but they kept pulling incorrect images. Often it would pull the first image in the product suggestions.

On a side note, I'm wondering what you guys would like to see in a new version of AME. Try and think small for the time being. There are a few small bugs I'm going to try and fix, like the duplication with the default definitions and maybe add some more comprehensive Admin CP help. Anything small you'd like to see added?

I did quite a few test imports into your AME CP and at first, I thought it was a character limit set by your host. But further testing suggests that it might be that and something else. You might need to try reinstalling AME as if your were doing an upgrade. And if that doesn't seem to help, do a full uninstall/reinstall. Yeah, some older videos won't like that, but there's definitely an issue with the installation here. It seems I can finagle everything up to Guitar-Tube to import, and then nothing will import. You should at least be able to import these definitions in groups but something is preventing that.

When I tested her forum, it imported up to a certain number of definitions, no matter how many different ways you tried to import it. I did groups of ten, then groups of thirty, then sometimes just one. Each time, it would stop importing once her definitions set got to be around 50 or so.

The backwards compatibility of AME works likes this. As I understand Passive Video, it parses links the same way as AME, using a RegEx pattern. With that said, AME includes BBCode for people who had been using tags to embed videos. Such as [YOUTUBE], [METACAFE], [VIMEO], etc. So AME has a tool you can run to replace all the old BBCode with it's [AME] tags so you can forget about having to keep the old tags available.

Now I could be wrong about Passive Video, but in order to backwards convert its videos en masse, AME would need to be able to find a tag to replace, and I don't believe PV uses anything like that. The videos can be edited one at a time, but other than those two options, there's no good way to correct that.

Also, we had some folks try installing both of these mods together before and they seemed to have some trouble when trying to fully uninstall Passive Vid. None of them ever got back to me on what exactly happened, but from what little I could glean, Passive Vid still left some info in the the database that caused a bit of conflict. I still don't know if it was Lite or the full version, but thought I should let you know.

This new one includes support for locally hosted PDFs, Power Point Presentations and Slideshows, as well as support for TIFF files. It does all this via the schmancy Google Docs Viewer (http://docs.google.com/viewer) as the converter. So enjoy.

You do know what to do with this def, right? Change the name of my website (cogonline) to the name of your site. No .com, .co.uk, .net or anything else. Just the name. Also, to enable document download from your sever, just turn on the container. I have it turned off cause it's oogly.

SoundClick Playlists - These embed the playlist from the a SoundClick user's home page. There are four definitions for playlists here. You can only use one at a time, so I only have one turned on by default. Toggle the definitions according to which one of SoundClick's playlist players you want to use. They include a Basic, Premium, Store and VIP MP3 Player. Use whichever you like, but pick one and stick with it.

At the moment, AME 3 has a way you can do that in the Read Me file. But right now AME 3 does not appear to be working with anything over vB 4.0.3, so keep that in mind. You can revert old videos to mere titled links in AME 2.5 before you upgrade by using one of the conversion options under Tools.

I don't know what Tweeter is, but you could just use the YouTube and Facebook definitions if that's all you want.

If BBCodes were a better solution, AME wouldn't have ever been designed. The point of AME is to have a more lightweight conversion of videos, in addition to a "hey user, you need to do this if you want it to work"-free way of making the convert. Since you're only wanting to use two, then it's not as big a deal, depending on how many other custom BBCodes your using. But then, would you rather have to explain to users how to use the [YOUTUBE], [FACEBOOK] and other BBCodes, knowing full well some aren't even going to bother or understand (or even read the explanation) even after the explanation? Or would you prefer the videos convert without the user even having to even needing to know it's going to happen? So really, it's up to you.

I see no reason whatsoever why it would have anything to do with server load. The JavaScript file is used solely for usergroup permissions.

I had a couple of people ask me about this. If you actually WANT to register on my forum to keep track of updates to AME or my other vBulletin project developments, then I'll go ahead and allow for that. Previously, I had all that stuff blocked from Registered Users because I didn't want my users seeing a bunch of posts that had nothing to do with them or the site subject. I'll allow that now, but you'll have to join a special User Group in your profile called CoG in the Machine if you want to see anything. Registration is still not required.

Keep in mind that this won't exempt you from my semi-annual pruning of old users with 0 post count, so if you expect to keep your account in tact, at least say hello in the Intro/Farewell section. Three definitions required for this one. I'm still not sure if this is fully International yet. Did quite a bit of testing, but eBay is vast and easy to miss variations in the URL strings. You would also need to do what you need to do to make the Replacement HTML code affiliate-able. (New word.) You also need to add this image to your images/misc directory.

You should only need to disable or delete the definition. Shouldn't have any affect on older links once removed. But yes, you always need to check for conflicts when two products are doing link rewrites.

I didn't do a lot with the eBay definitions only because I wasn't quite catching on to what an affiliated link would look like. If you can send me about a dozen samples of what affiliate links look like, I might be able to work something out.

I will try to do a definitions set for AME 3, but I'm not sure it will be worth the effort, as currently AME 3 doesn't seem to be working with new definitions. My goal is to rewrite AME 3 at some point in the future. And by "rewrite", that means just do what The Geek did and pretend I did it, too. =/

It means you already have a YouTube definition that you need to get rid of, or untick the one you're trying to import for exclusion. Mine's more current, so you may want to backup the old one and delete it for the time being.

These definitions, when used with the AME mod itself, does indeed let you alter Amazon links to add your affiliate code, I used them like that for a while.

I know it works with Amazon USA, I'm not sure Amazon UK has a definition, but if it works like Amazon USA one could be made.

I am replacing the "$ameinfo[height]" with the one I want because the default zone settings are not working either and yes I uploaded the delta definitions and never installed the 3rd times a charm. This will work but it will always be the same size no matter what zone you are in.

Is the correct code. You have 2 places in the embed code you need to use this (both in the OBJECT tag and the EMBED tag)

If this isn't working you probably need to check your zone settings in AME Settings because this code is absolutely correct.

I tried it on a single video embed and it worked perfect. But, when I did a post with multiple embeds it went right back to the issue. Unless, it's not a multiple embed problem.

Not sure what you mean Joe. I only use AME, but I do run vBSEO if that tells you anything. The only other mod that may have something to go with links is Viglink which is the affiliate mod.

What I mean if you post a URL like http://www.magicthemeparks.com/mk/forum does the forum automatically convert it to: Disney's Magic Kingdom Forums (http://www.magicthemeparks.com/mk/forum).

I'm pretty sure that is an option in VBSEO. (There's also a stand alone mod that does the same thing.) I'm thinking that mod might be overriding the AME title. I had the same issue on my board and had to modify the mod as well.

If you have the option enabled in VBSEO, it works the same way as the mod- it reads the title in from the link, AME reads the title in from the link too. The fix I posted will trip these characters from the AME mod but you still need a way to strip it from VBSEO (if that option is turned on.)

If you can disable that option for a few minutes and try some more youtube posts, see if you still have the issue.

For some reason I can't import any of the youtube definitions from the master.xml file. I even tried deleting all of the old definitions and just importing the youtube ones. It says it went successful but when I click display definitions, nothings there. Any ideas?

When you say "deleting" are you editing the XML file manually? If so don't do that- you can simply un-select definitions you don't want to import.

It looks like you added a second youtube definition. Check your AME Definitions and make sure only 1 youtube is installed and active.

youtu.be is a redirect page to the real youtube.com - so I have never been able to get titles to work with youtu.be links since the page doesn't have a title really- it's just a redirect.

If you need the title you will have to paste in the full youtube url instead of the youtu.be URL.

It's not really a big a deal since youtube displays the title in the video window itself.

It's because they are cached that way. It's probably only one or two weeks of posts affected- now that it's working properly the old posts will get fixed in time.

I don't know of any way to speed this up other than to manually edit and re-save each post.

But in time it will get back to normal.

Also I was thinking about your youtu.be issue- I made a quick mod that will change youtu.be to youtube.com so it will always use the real youtube.com URL.

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with vbcredits or the charge code at all. Sorry. Best to ask in the vbcredits thread, I'd imagine someone must have rebuilt their post cache with that mod before.

Off hand I would look at the instructions that came with vbcredits, maybe there is another "rebuild" option to run they tell you about.

Right, it pretty much ONLY works with the English language domain. The problem is none of the foreign language domains use the same, or consistent, HTML code. I tried around a dozen different languages, and for some reason, only English had the consistent source code I need to make consistent matches.

From what I could see, it looks like your missing all the necessary AME templates. There should be three: ame_container, ame_nomedia and ame_output. For some reason, none of your styles has them. Try re-uploading all the AME files and then doing a fresh import of the AME product, just like if you were doing an upgrade. That should rebuild the templates your missing, unless something else is going on.

In the includes directory find the file ame_bbcode.php

At line #589 find this code:

All I can promise is it's working for me. It won't fix links you've already made but should keep new ones clean.

I had one small problem with this, and it's probably something I won't run into too often. Single quotes in the title caused a parse error with AME. I presume it's from this edt, but I haven't had a chance to verify that yet. When I get into this more, I'll see if I can find a fix.

Let me double check, because it may not have been just the title alone. I believe the video I tested included the video title in the embed code URL. So it might be rarer than I first suggested.

It turns the short URLs into the FULL URLs automatically when a post is made/saved.

I've loaded the SoundCloud definitions but they're not embedding anywhere on the forum? I've checked all the boxes in Display Definitions for SoundCloud no idea...
Can I see your forum where they're not converting? If you're certain all your settings are correct, check to see that your ame_templates are still intact.

I don't immediately see any reason why they shouldn't be, presuming all your settings are correct. I can take a look at your Admin CP if you wish. But from this end, I don't see any reason they aren't converting.

Hrm, sorry. Oversight on my part. Go into the definitions and add a dash to this part of the Regular Expression, like so:

IMDB should have never been in there. That was an accident a while back, and the reason why I didn't include them in the last update. IMDB will never work as long as they disallow hot linking. I'll look at Wikipedia.

There is a Wikipedia (Links) definition included in the Master XML. Just make sure to turn Wikipedia (Thumbnails) off when you turn it on and that you've uploaded the little W icon to your server.
