Just one thing, when you told DannyITR that Zoints Autonomous provides everything he asked for, does this include getting rid of /z/ that he mentioned too? I thought this wasn't possible?
I wasn't aware of the autonomous system and I'll definitely look into it. Yes getting rid of the /z/ is paramount or at least using wildcard domains so I can have username.domain.com. When I registered at zoints.com the first thing it said was that my profile is now dannyitr.zoints.com so obviously its possible. It wouldn't make sense for zoints to use that system and not offer it to its users. I'm sure DChapman just forgot to mention how we can do it.

I installed zoints, but can't seem to find how to get to it, and now, when i click on my name to get to my profile, i get file not found!
HELP!
It sounds like you turned on the mod_rewrite option and didn't upload the .htaccess
In the zip file we provided, there is a folder call "rewrite". Upload the .htaccess file in there to /z/

DChapman, I think we all respect what you are doing with Zoints:) I do anyway:) But when you compare it to the likes of a Virtual Highway with interconnecting routes, everyone knows that the towns people like to see business coming into their community, but not going out of it. For you, the government (lol) you want to give your people the freedom and become economically sound, but as with real life, the oul corner shop just wont be able to compete with the big Supermarket that has just opened 500 metres down the road.
The big supermarket in this case is MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, etc. How do you compete with huge entities like Wal Mart, Home Depot, and those enormous supermarket chains you're referring to? You band together in a loose affiliation. For instance, there is a carpet and tile store down the street from me. There's no way they could compete with Homedepot on price if they went at it alone. But because they have joined into an organization of like small tile/carpet stores across the country (I think it's called Carpet One or something like that) they get the buying power of the huge affiliation and can compete on price.
The customers start to go to the bigger shops where they can get everything that was in the smaller, specialist shops but it's more convenient because it's all under the same roof.
Sometimes, yes. That's why MySpace now has over 120 million members and most forums are seeing flat activity rates despite increasing numbers of registrations.
This relates to traffic being taken away from the smaller sites with zoints and probably ending up at a bigger site with a broader range of forums where people can get responses to their questions quicker and everything else that a bigger site has over the smaller guys, by just using the one account to log in to.
It's about carving out your niche and differentiating yourself. If you start a forum that is exactly like 35 other (and larger) general discussion forums on the net, then you're likely going to fail with or without Zoints. But if you create a general discussion community that is somehow different and offers what others do not, then you have a chance to succeed. Zoints isn't going to make or break anyone. In the end, that rests with you and you have nobody to blame but yourself if you fail and nobody to congratulate but yourself if you succeed. We're simply trying to increase your chance of success by providing solutions that are designed to solve the three problems you WILL face: member acquisiton, member retention, and profitability. Anyone can write a hack, but nobody else has identified the exact issues forum owners face and is actively working to resolve them.
We're not putting the time, effort and money into our sites just to end up sending everyone off to the big sites, even though it could benefit the internet population as a whole, even still, there's just no point in it for us.
Why doesn't everyone live in the big cities of the USA? Why aren't all 300 million of us in New York, Los Angeles, etc? Because not everyone likes that life. For my "home community" I personally prefer a smaller forum where everyone knows me and vice versa. And then I head off to a dozen other sites each day that cover other niches I am interested in.
If you want to look at it in extremities, Zoints could also one day be void because it's job has been done, it's brought everyone together, all the smaller sites are no more and the bigger sites can now advertise and there will be no need for Zoints or for smaller, specialist sites. This is of course an extreme but could eventually happen if things went absolutely to plan.
So I don't think this would be good for any of us.
It's pretty simple. Hundreds of communities are utilizing the free autonomous system with quite a few more joining per day. I am deluged by requests from phpbb, invision, smf, and other communities running various software requesting to utilize this system. Many people love and share our vision. Everyone has their own preference and should do what they feel is best for their community. Zoints is innovating. We're not interested in sticking with the status quo. Here is a good read (http://blog.guykawasaki.com/2006/01/the_art_of_inno.html) by a VC / startup expert who I respect a great deal. How many of those can Zoints check off? ;)
Just one thing, when you told DannyITR that Zoints Autonomous provides everything he asked for, does this include getting rid of /z/ that he mentioned too? I thought this wasn't possible?
With the autonomous license, you can rename /z/ to whatever you want without trouble. You just can't have domain.com/username otherwise the system will break. username.domain.com is theoretically possible with a load of modifications to server settings and .htaccess, but we don't support it or guarantee it will work.

Why can you do it but leave other sites to fend for themselves with no help? BTW I currently have usernmae.domain.com working for my VB right now. I wonder if installing zoints will affect it or not. Anyways mabye I'll give it a shot.

Hi again DC,
You provided valid points in all your replies. It's obvious we both want what's best, both for ourselves and for everyone. And yes, about the "niche" community, I fully understand, we are a poker site, I'd say almost every one our members knows of twoplustwo.com, the biggest poker forum on the net, but I'd say a lot of them post on poker.ie more, it's Irish and it's a small community, which as you know, some people prefer. There is also the extra hustle and bustle of city life on the larger forums, you can't keep up with topics because there are so many replies etc.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds it a task some times to catch up on a topic when you log back in and see it has loads of replies.
I'm just expressing my fears of losing the small community that I have.
I'm just not sure if connecting with others would give me more "buying power" in the same sense as the tile shop. I wouldn't consider my site in any way in competition with myspace/youtube etc, they are just completely different. Are you saying you want to band all forums together so Zoints will be up there amongst the likes of myspace and youtube? I respect your ideas and goals, but again, I'm worried about the small guys.
Regarding the /z/, would it not just be a case of excluding the likes of sitename.com/contactus from the list? Talking to SirAdrian from vblogetin.com, he is making it possible to have blog URLs at www.sitename.com/username or www.sitename.com/blogtitle by making exceptions for all content currently at a .com/content address. Would it be possible to make an addition to the software to allow sitename.com/username or username.sitename.com so there would be no need for additional hacks etc?

Go to /z/zadmin.php > edit install settings > uncheck the mod_rewrite box and save. See if you're able to access profiles at that point.

Why can you do it but leave other sites to fend for themselves with no help?
The code on Zoints.com isn't the same as Zoints Local. We haven't tested username.domain.com because that isn't how Zoints Local is designed and even if it does work, the process of setting up those subdomains is not easy for most people (and most shared hosts wouldn't even allow it). It would turn into a support nightmare. If we had infinite resources and time, sure, we'd love to help with it. Nobody likes telling other people no.

Being part of Zoints is a plus for my users.
I have many intrests not just what my forums are about. The same goes for our members.
It's all about community and user experience. I like to ski but I also play poker I visit forums for both. It's your job to make your visitors experience better than anything else out there. If they really want to find another site Google is only one click away. If your doing a good job they will stick if not it's nobodys fault but your own.
I am in a highly competitive niche and my users stay. Mostly because of the interaction and willingness to try something new (like Zoints). They love the new features. With using Zoints it gives them more a sense of the site being theirs and they contribute more not less. Even if they find new sites our site is always home.

When a visitor is at my zoints Search Profile page and clicks on the forum link I get a white page error as the forum button does not include the extension "index.php"
The forum button should return my forum page but does not.
I changed the Profile name to "Puzzle People" on menu bar and you can see the problem in action, or inaction, here (http://www.punzhu.com/forums/z/search.php).
If this problem of mine has already been discussed then please forgive me as I have spent much time searching various forums for a solution and must have missed it. If a simple, easy, solution is available please repost it here. If no easy solution available please post anyway as I need the help.

OK, sorry if I'm continuing a subject which has probably been spoken about a lot....
So let me get this straight...$120, I pay that and my forum will be TOTALLY independent of the larger Zoints network? There will be no external links that members will be taken to and everything will stay local?...
Thanks :)

This is how it shoudl work: If a member chooses to link their profile to the zoints network then other zoints links appear like search and communites etc. Otherwise the name zoints should never appear at all anywhere on the forum except as a brand on the bottom. I believe there are "Zoints Messages" if you upload a pic that was too big. That is not cool at all.

I wouldn't mind being a beta tester but then I dont have any extra vb license and I am not trying to do no beta testing on my live site. I hope people will volunteer to make the process a lot quicker and hopefully there is no bugs on it for a quicker release date.
I think this should be customized to match vbulletin's theads and table borders and everything

Upload all the /z/install/ files then go to /z/install/index.php and go through the process only as far as where it gives you the localsettings.php file. Stop the install process, upload that and then you should be fine. :)

Right, that isn't a limitation of Zoints, those characters are not in any urls.
We have a system built into Zoints Local to resolve this. The first time a user accesses their profile, if they have those characters in their username, the system asks them to create a different profile username without the special characters. However, this probably isn't going to be a good solution for your forum. We'll need to add the ability to turn off usernames in the url as an option.

Are any files uploaded and stored on the file system instead of the database? I have multiple servers in a round robin and uploading to file system - any file - would not work.
I remember seeing in a demo site that a profile picture was stored in the /user/ folder. Is there an option to use the database instead for things like that?

When I'm in the profile view "yoursite.xxx/z/username/", I can't change between the vB styles/templates from the quick style chooser at the bottom of the page.. I have to go back to the forums, change style, and than revisit the profile...

Are any files uploaded and stored on the file system instead of the database? I have multiple servers in a round robin and uploading to file system - any file - would not work.
I remember seeing in a demo site that a profile picture was stored in the /user/ folder. Is there an option to use the database instead for things like that?
There is currently not a database storage option. But our server admin responded to you over on network.zoints.com with a potential resolution.

What version of Zoints Local are you using? The chooser should be removed from the footer on profile pages.

Aha. I'm on the newest version, just havent imported the product yet in vB. Guess thats why it's still there. I'm doing all the customization before publishing it.
Do you have any plans adding the style chooser or are there some problems with it?
Edit:
* The ability to only make admins create network groups and the possibility of having leaders for groups.
* What about having the possibility to specify which blocks are allowed on a pages basis, and not general.
* And if you do a little mistake with some blocks, the order gets cluttered up and you have to disable everything and set them back up to get the correct order again. There should be a "set this order for every member" button so you can override everything if you want to change the layout.

Not at this time.
The ability to only make admins create network groups and the possibility of having leaders for groups.
Network groups? Elaborate please.
What about having the possibility to specify which blocks are allowed on a pages basis, and not general.
You can do that now via /z/zadmin.php > pages > edit block layout (on a page by page basis)
And if you do a little mistake with some blocks, the order gets cluttered up and you have to disable everything and set them back up to get the correct order again. There should be a "set this order for every member" button so you can override everything if you want to change the layout.
Yep, that needs improved.

When you visit other profiles you can press "Network with <Username>" and select a group (Family, Friends, Colleagues and Add Group).
Maybe it goes against the purpose, but was wondering if it was possible to remove the "add group" option and only make it possible for the admin(s) to add additional groups.
Other than that, keep up the excellent work!

i registered on zoints using the forum owner link. where do i get the token / authentication key from?
do my members have to register on zoints to be able to have profiles like these? or how does it work.
when people click on the user names on my forum, will they still see the usual vbulletin profiles or will they see a zoint like profile once i'm completely finished.

Thanks a lot for this wonderful mod! It's so awesome!
I'm kind of a newbie at this .htaccess file change but i'm getting there. I've managed to fix other areas but i'm having trouble uploading a new block.
It gives me the 406 Not Acceptable error message. I've already added the .htaccess file into the z folder and to add to that I just added rewrite folder into the z folder but that wouldn't help either.
"Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /forum/z/zadmin.php could not be found on this server."
That's the error message I receive. Do I need to add something to the existing .htaccess file that is not mentioned anywhere?
Feedback: You may want to give out more pointers on how to use .htaccess as that will allow users who don't know how to use the whole thing to be able to use this without having to ask for help :p lol.
Overall i'm very pleased with this mod! So awesome! If I could just get the ability to upload new blocks without that error message getting on my way then that would be wonderful!
Thanks :D

We've had a few reports of issues with ISAPI. At present, we're moving it to an unsupported platform. Sorry for the trouble, but we don't have an IIS server to test things on right now to figure out where the issue is arising. As soon as we do figure out a resolution, we'll let you know.did you ever get a resolution for that?

If you registered at http://zoints.com/forum.z then they should have been provided during the process. During the install, clicking on the token and auth key links will take you to zoints.com where they are shown to you.

IF you turn the mod_rewrite option on then the only thing you do with .htaccess is upload the .htaccess file in the rewrite folder to /z/. You do NOT do anything else, you do not upload the entire rewrite folder, all you do is upload the .htaccess to /z/ and nothing else.
You're the first to ever report:
"Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /forum/z/zadmin.php could not be found on this server." so I am a little confused there.
Can you fix the .htaccess file and then (if the problem still persists) walk me through exactly what is happening? Thanks.

is there no other way if installing it?

Obviously we want this system to work for as many people as possible. There is a massive amount of code and we're quite pleased that is works on the vast majority of forums with no problems at all. We just have a few setups (ISAPI, strange mod_security settings, and safemode) that are causing us headaches right now.

Hi thanks for the reply.
Yes I have now removed the rewrite folder and the .htaccess is still in the z directory. mod_rewrite option is turned on. I still get the same error message.
What I do is go to my profile > settings > Zoints Admin Area > Pages > Upload New Block > browse for the block and select it then click Upload.
When I click upload then instead of going any further and SUCCESSFULLY uploading it, it gives me that sad 404 error message.
My .htaccess file as I've uploaded it contains:
Options +FollowSymlinks
# If you are running vBSEO with RewriteBase enabled,
# or your webserver needs it, uncomment the following
# line, and change "/forum/z" to the appropriate path
# of where the forum is (ie domain.com/forums/z/ should
# change it to /forums/z)
# RewriteBase /forum/z
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(install/|tour/|[a-z]+\.php)$ $0 [L]
RewriteRule ^(.+)/(.+)/$ $2.php?z-profile=$1 [QSA]
RewriteRule ^([^/]+)/?$ index.php?z-profile=$1 [QSA]
I notice a "tour" there and I have no clue what that is about, for some reason mine doesn't have that. Could that be the cause of the problem? I mean me not having something relating to Pages section in the .htaccess file?
I haven't editted the .htaccess file even one bit, I just uploaded it as it came so I dunno why I don't have a "tours" section. Anyhow i'm not so worried about tours section as long as Zoints is able to function properly without it lol :D but if this Pages section could be resolved then that would be so wonderful.

Yes I have now removed the rewrite folder and the .htaccess is still in the z directory. mod_rewrite option is turned on. I still get the same error message.
I don't think the issue you are experiencing is related to .htaccess, but let's try a few things. First of all, which new block are you trying to upload?
1. Go to /z/zadmin/php > change install settings and remove mod_rewrite. Then try to upload the new block and see if it works.
If no...
2. Upload all of your files again so we can make sure none didn't happen to get missed.
If still no...
3. If you would like to submit a support ticket to http://zoints.com/support.z with the following, we'll look into the issue for you:
1. A temp admin account
2. A temp FTP account
3. A link to this thread
Please be sure to give the temp admin account admin status on Zoints by going to /z/zadmin.php, searching for the user, and setting the permissions as admin.
Thank you.

How about a block which has last XX Profile Visitors name and avatar in it..
Also maybe total profile hits stats in another box.
I still haven't bought this yet because I just wrecked my car and all my money going towards that problem now but hopefully DC and his staff can implement that block or someone else by the time I have enough money to buy the other version.

The two options would be:
1. Troubleshoot what the javascript error is.
2. Try adding the header and footer via manual code input. A guide for that can be found here (http://network.zoints.com/showthread.php?t=2224).

All the settings etc are saved on that file which is saved in the includes directory once the mod has been installed. Also in the admin some of the images aren't being displayed because it is looking for https://www.MySite.com/forum/images/misc/image.gif Just the images in vBulletin such as the logo in the head section and the header. since i fixed the s in the http line all the images in Zoints Admin itself now work but not the others. Is the https hardcoded in some of the files?
Any advice would be great.
If you go to /z/zadmin.php > change install settings, is there an https for the url there?

If I turn on the forum profile page in the zoints navbar and go to it, it only shows a top slice of the old profile (the rest is cut off). I have the latest version of both the vb product and zoints local.
Also can a user delete their zoints profile altogether if they want?

1. You can create a new default style for your members by, as an admin, making a style the normal way. All admin styles are then available when you go to /z/zadmin/php > pages > edit style for each page. You can assign the style to any page you want.
2/3. Proper language support will not be available until 1.1.0, sorry.

Yes I can still see those links. Also I just realized that I can scroll the small window to see the rest of the profile but the total height remains only about 200px.
Another thing: In firefox the "add new block" dropdown menu text extends to the right and out of the popup box. Additionally, I have the "rate me" block in the top left position and the stars from that block are disrupting the drowdown menu as well in both IE and FF.

Hope to see the solution as well the possibility tu use phrase variables for definitions like "setting" "My profile" and so on, as of non Englisch forums would not like to have only Englisch definitions of Profile field.
Looks good, but till it is English-Only I get rid of this mod on my forum.

Hi DChapman, is there any way to send users a PM automatically in the forum when adding them to your network in your profile??
People need to go into their profiles to see if someone has added them or not, can this not be turned into whenever they are added to ones network, they will be PM'ed in the forum itself so that they can take prompt action rather than waiting for a century for them to check their profile hahaha :D

I've read most of this discussion and it seems nobody has my problem which is: Zoints Local runs really really slow on my forum, and I can assure you it isn't a bandwidth problem (because I've got a 40MB link) nor a server power issue (it runs on a 2400Mhz dual core Athlon 64).
I've tried disabling the mod rewrite option, but that doesn't help.

I've had requests from my users to have a search facility in the blogs/discussion sections. Quite a few of my users have hundreds of entries (they are developers / sysadmins so use the blogs for notes etc). And are losing track of "past entries". Is it possible to ahve a serach facility in a later release? Some have ask for blog categories as well but I'm guessing thats going to be a pain to implement so I've told them to get a blog elsewhere for the mean time.

There are often multiple versions of safemode enabled on a server. If you're still getting the safemode errors, then it's still interfering.
As for the IE javascript errors. Please go to /z/zadmin.php and turn off your forum header and footer to see if that resolves the issue.

This has a couple really neat ideas, but the appearance is a dealbreaker for me.
I could deal with the branding, and the search taking some users away from my site, but doing it with an interface so markedly different from the rest of my site tips the balance. Poking around, I've seen mention of a branding-free version, but it seems pretty expensive compared to the price of vbulletin itself.
The emphasis on user profile data and not on the blog entries themselves is also a stumbling block for me. My main interest is a robust, searchable journalling system. (This also means I probably don't represent the target audience of this mod.)
Having said that, Dchapman, you're to be commended for your attention and responsiveness in dealing with users' needs. You set a really good example. Additionally, it's a lot easier to let a company's brand show up on my site, and let my users be taken off to other sites through that company's portal, when that company takes pains to present themselves as yours has.
Back to vBJournals for me, probably, but I'll keep an eye out for where this project heads in the future.

With custom work like that (very cool by the way :) ), we'd likely need you to add that data manually to the header/footer area in /z/zadmin.php. A tutorial for doing that can be found here (http://network.zoints.com/showthread.php?t=2224).

Frankly, our blogging system is lacking at this point but will improve significantly over time. You COULD turn off the profile pages and leave just the blog side of things. And we of course have a vbjournal importer so you could keep all that information. But if your main desire is a blog type system, I'd wait for us to improve things before switching.
Thanks for your kind words though, I really do appreciate it.

Hi Olliee,
Go to /z/includes/localsettings.php
In there you will find:

$config['forum path'] = '/home/something/public_html/something';
Switching servers likely changed that. Correct your path and you should be good to go.

Alright, I found a round-a-bout way to get to it, by clicking on view member profile and then go to my profile. Once again, it look really good, but would be great to have easier access. Would love to have a link in the quicklinks section, and have it available at user cp.
Cheers,

Hi Cindy,
I have installed the system and it looks great! But I have no sight of it in my forum. I think I have set it up right, is it because of the template I am using? Do I need to add some code to the template?
I see that if I click on one of your member's usernames that it redirects properly. You have a pretty custom style, which means you'll likely need to perform some of the template edits manually which we have listed in the readme file.

Oops, hahah. I guess I should have scrolled further. There is a dropdown in the navbar edit available as well as the postbit. You can do those manually via the readme file. As for the usercp:
Edit template: USERCP_SHELL
<tr>
<td class="$navclass[password]" nowrap="nowrap"><a class="smallfont" href="profile.php?$session[sessionurl]do=editpassword">$vbphrase[edit_email_and_password]</a></td>
</tr>
Below, add:
<tr>
<td class="alt2" nowrap="nowrap"><a class="smallfont" href="$vboptions[zointsprofile_zurl]?id=$bbuserinfo[userid]">Edit Zoints Profile</a></td>
</tr>
You can of course change 'Edit Zoints Profile" to whatever you want.

I like it but I kind of think it takes away your visitors and members from my forum while doing a search in communities. Is their a link back to my forum for my members? Did I miss it?
To check the search this community by default, please do the following:
Edit file: /z/templates/profile/search.template.php
AND file: /z/templates/profile/search_ajax.template.php
Replace
==================
<td align="left"><input type="checkbox" name="ts" /></td>

ok.. I've been running zoints (regular) for a while and have been very happy with the service and users dig it.
now.. I LOVE the idea of local but I'm concerned about losing the SEO benefits of the backlinks from Zoints....
what's the SEO benefit of Zoints local vs Zoints (regular) or do we have to take the loss and hope that member profiles themselves get crawled for better SEO?

I've tried Zoints and really like it. It includes blogs and photo uploads. I hope I'm not missing something here. My only concern is that it doesn't come with an option to limit upload limits and disk space usage. This is especially troublesome when you have a large community. If you have 1000s blogging every day and uploading all kinds of photos, it could take up a huge amount of disk space in no time. Does Zoints have plans to include an option that could limit uploads and disk space usage?

The current version of Zoints Local doesn't allow for that. You need to replicate the sytle (which takes about 10 minutes) via our style system.

heh. well my zoints pages all have around PR4...which isn't too bad actually considering they are all backlinks to the board.
1. if I go local, do I retain the http : //myuserid.zoints.com at least as independent pages? is there some link back?
perhap minimize the loss of multiple PR4s if they at least still existed or provided reciprocal links.
2. If I don't like local.. (or take a hit) can I go back to "regular"?

Thanks for pointing that out. I was not aware since it requires a change in the code itself. Where am I supposed to plug in the values? Is it this line in the highlighted portion of the text.
$settings['max file size'] = number_format($settings['max file size'] / 1024, 2, '.', '');
By the way, is there a way to limit bandwidth usage? For example, 4MB daily max. per registered user for clicking on photos, etc.? It would be necessary if you got a large community. If you have 500 members using 4MB per day, you are talking about 2 GB already per day and 60GB per month. So there is a dire need for limiting bandwidth usage.

If your members like Zoints Central and you get a ton of PR4 inbound links from it, why switch?
1. The pages on zoints.com won't go anywhere.
2. It's not easy, but yes
We still have some really cool stuff planned for Zoints Central...

Not the actual zadmin.php file. I mean, in your browser, go to yourdomain.com/z/zadmin.php -- we have a graphical user interface control panel where you can handle all that.

Can you please reply here with (or PM me) the url you installed it on? I'm guessing it is a mod_rewrite issue. Did you check the mod_rewrite box but not upload the .htaccess file?

This is great and I've got it working with a couple of us testing it out on my forum.
Just a couple of minor things...
I've uploaded a photo to my Profile page. And I've got the photo block showing on the Home page, but the photo itself doesn't show
In the 'username' block, if I click the spanner and turn off the username and avatar, they disappear, fine. But...if I try to click them back in again, they don't appear
Any ideas?

That's not an error. You need to use your FTP program to CHMOD /z/user to 777. You can do that with most FTP programs by right clicking on that directory and changing it to 777,

We have the mod installed at Retro Radio Network (http://www.retroradionetwork.com) and really like it, but encountered 2 problems:
1. Linking your Zoints Local profile to your Zoints Central profile does not work. It never actually links. In the end, for those who have requested it I have had to manually edit their Zoints Local info in the database to get them linked.
2. Communities do not show up after linking. It says "My Communities" but the field has nothing in it. And I am a member of a few communities at Zoints.
Other than that, I think it's great!

I'm running into quite a few problems here.
1) I've predefined the path to most of my images with replacement variables and the profiles page doesn't seem to want to follow it. It will do ".com/forums//forums/image/etc". So that means I will have to manually go through and edit each of my replacement variables to "/forums/images/etc". Is there anyway around this?
2) Part of my meta description is showing up at the top of the profiles page. How and why would it be doing that?
3) The admin script won't let me log in to it. What do I need to change to make it so I can log in?
