I've upgraded to php5 and nothing seems to have magicinally fixed itself, unfortunately. Issues I still have:

(1) When Group leader has no avatar, users within the group who DO have avatars do not show said avatars.

(2) View new posts (etc) links taking you to a blank page with no posts (such as Page 4 of 3) when the thread gets past 2-3 pages.

(3) If you have a post with a quote and regular text, when you preview, it only shows the quote and loses the regular text.

(4) If you have a post with a quote and hit preview, it inherits a title of some random thread from the forums.

(5) Post icons still do not work correctly. A post icon selected for the first post of a thread will show on the Group home page but when you read the thread, the post icon is the default. All subsequent posts do not show selected icons. If I go back to edit a post, it doesn't have an icon selected so I think it's not being saved to the DB correctly.

(6) A post with no title inherits the title of the group when you go to edit it.

I did find one issue was resolved, and that was the weird issue of getting a random forum's description at the top of the post report page when reporting. :)

The "View New Posts" etc is really starting to PO my users pretty bad :( so if/when you have a chance, can you look at it again? The issue is that after the thread gets a little past 2 pages (though sometimes it even happens on the first page) those links take you one page too far and so you see nothing at all, just the group description.

Also, I wondered how many threads show on the group home page? All of them? I have groups with tons of threads, and they've yet to get a page 2 or anything so I wondered when/if that happens. :)

About the ability to have multiple group leaders. whoever starts the group will be able to appoint his fellow group leaders and then they'll basically have the same amount of power as the group starter. i.e. the ability to edit members, kick members, delete messages and so on and so fourth, etc. they won't be able to kick other group leaders however. the reason i'm mentioning this is because i'm about to start coding this feature and unless theirs resounding opposition to this i'll write the feature like this.

For everyone. When a member leaves a group, they should have an option to take their posts with them. If a leader or the admin removes a member, it should be an option as well (IMO). I left a group yesterday and didn't want my posts to be removed (like the one where I posted why I was leaving) but I didn't have a choice.

My other 3.0 requests are:

- If you add post count incrementation for posting to groups, make it optional in adminCP.
- Make multiple group owners optional in adminCP.
- Give option to keep or remove user's post when removing from the group.
- Set a check of user's permissions -- if their usergroup changes so they no longer have groups permissions, then actually take away their groups permissions. Preferably, if they have a usergroup change that does not allow them to be in groups, then remove them (and not their posts) from groups.
- Admin viewable group stats -- total # groups, total # group users, total # posts, posts per day.

Other ideas:

- Allow admin to see what Groups a user is in.
- Allow users to subscribe to email notifications of new group posts.
- Show how many new posts since last visit on user's control panel where the group images are.
- Post preview when posting replies.
- Give admin the ability to edit a Group the same way that the Group leader can (adminCP doesn't allow you to edit all aspects of a group).
- Allow admin to kick members from groups.

I finally got around the dang missing avatar issue by adding a replacement variable to the site template:

replaced with

Which FINALLY fixed it. I don't know what the issue is with GRPS itself that it couldn't do that when the leader had no avatar, but I'm relieved to have done something about it and if anyone else has the issue, there's your fix.

interesting. that's definitely due to neglect on my part. on both of my test setups avatars are stored above the ROOT. i will be more mindful of this in future

I didn't read through other suggestions. But I'm *sure* It's been mentioned. I know you don't want to use the forum datastore ... what about some sort of extra code & template edit that will show New Group posts under the New posts section when a user clicks it. (IE Two seperate tables .. one for forum, one for groups).

Other ideas:

- Use template replacement variables after install instead of manually editing all smilies etc (this would just be a change in the instructions for the end user).
- Do not allow group leaders to turn the group over to a user who is in a usergroup that does not have the option to lead groups.
- Allow polls in groups.
- Show page numbers/navigation under post title on group home page.
- Improve browse.php to show additional info such as public/private, group leader, number of members, number of posts.

The MOST requested features from my users is post review when posting and email notification of new group posts.

I'm not sure if this is something new, or it's just that no one has reported it to me until now, but it seems that IE users get an error when using the advanced editor and they click the "insert image" or "insert email address" buttons. To fix this, I had to make an edit in forums/clientscripts/vbulletin_textedit.js as follows:

When I run the installer, an error appears:

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required './global.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php:/usr/share/pear') in /var/kunden/webs/test/forum/groups/tools/grps_installer.php on line 36

The vB is in a subfolder /forum, there I also uploaded the file structure.
In groups/include/config_grps.php I tried several versions:
../forums/ , ../../forums/ and also /var/kunden/webs/test/forum/forums/ .
The error looked a bit different in all Versions, but I never made it run :(
Any Ideas?

There is a Seperate Mod that you need to install to fix this. Look in the Mod Post above and I believe there is a link pointing to it.

the admin path is not static!!!
it can be changed in the config.php, so you should use the variable instead of '="admincp/index.php', in the footer replacement + in the group moderation link

My directory structure looks like:

/forum <= inside is the vBulletin
/forum/forums <= the 1st Folder of the Addon
/forum/groups <= the 2nd one...

So I tried to run:

What is the right way to configure the config file?

Okay - with the line:

Now there is the Problem, that I don't find the groups... Everything is turned on in the user rights, also the groups are activated in the admincp-groups-general settings.

But I found:
Strings To Find In "viewthread.php"
These are the strings to find in viewthread.php. Each replacement is seperated by a space followed by a comma.

Is there anything more to replace in a php file?
I need to go home, there is the manual :) Hopefully it helps!

I think this kind of extension will be the future of the forums, you can see in orkut or tocorre.com.

My wishlist (if not implementes already - so many things to try!) is short:
A better integration into vB. It would be amazing to show the groups of a user inside his profile. So the Profile could be like an own Homepage. Own Forums/Groups, own Gallery, own Guestbook. Additonally a "friend of a friend"-System, showing the connections between people (like XING.com) - and you have a killer-Forum!

I got it installed and everything is functional, but my groups page is not inheriting the style from my site. All of my URLs are written out completely and I had to do this a long time ago for other reasons. What could be the issue now?

i think it would be enouth if you copy this plugin GRPS: Group Activity In User CP (15 Newest) into a new plugin with hook member_start and put $grps_mygroupsbits into the memberinfo template

I'm a noob to vB, so these are probably some dumb questions... I installed it and it works, but a few problems...

I have a custom style installed, but I just overwrote my default style with it... The custom style moves the navbar from the navbar template into the header... (not sure if that's relevant, but...)

So, I use a subdomain, and I have the groups working @ forums.mysite.com/groups

So, heres the problems I'm having:

At the top of the groups index page, it displays:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /my/site/root/site/subdomain/groups/index.php(355) : eval()'d code on line 1

The Links in the navbar go to forums.mysite.com/groups/navlink.php

And the otherwise, the styles just don't look right... Almost looks as if it doesn't have any formating...

How can I resolve those problems?

you'd have to edit the relevant template 'groups_display_main' to place it where you want it to be and then edit the css in the same template.

1/ Given that i wasn't sure where people would want the links. i decided to leave that upto individual admins.

2 & 3/ Something like that doesn't exist at present but it's been suggested a few times. my initial hopes were that someone would release an addon to achieve this but it hasn't happened and my priority remains the core of the project. however with 3.x.x i do plan to work on plugins myself for deeper integration like 'groups listing in profile' and some others i've forgotten but have been mentioned in this thread.

Well, I found the problem, none of the images in my templates had the right path, so I fixed that...

whatever plugins you've got installed to effect your navbar/headinclude template try disabling them and seeing if the problem goes away. if not try and edit your navbar template and then your headinclude template and see if either throwup errors.

I can't get the style on it and I have written out my full paths in the stylevars and in my Main/Additional CSS long ago for other reasons. I rechecked all of them and they are all written out fully. I reinstalled the .XML and it still won't add the style. My style is custom and I don't have the default vBulletin style anymore (not for a long time). Does that have something to do with it. I searched this entire thread, tried some suggestions and I still can't get it to work.

OK I made two plugins, one in grps_global_start (forgot to disable) and one in global start. Disabled the bad one and the error is gone. Thanks.

OK I think I understand now. I'm thinking about it and I don't know what the proper full path to New Posts would be. Sorry for the vBulletin question, but What is the full path for $vbphrase[new_posts_nav]. It's funny because I don't need to change Today's Posts under Quick Links at all because it works fine from the groups page.

Yes, the search works fine. I checked that yesterday and everything else works fine too. Just having a problem with New Posts.

I'm not really sure what to tell you as i don't want to give an ETA. i currently have one or two things where i'm using place holder technology so i'm not sure how long it will take to ge them right. but in terms of PHP and HTML/CSS. i'm around 50% done. i reckon that if i didn't lose my pc i would be preparing for beta testing around now.

Sabret, img vbcode doesn't seem to work properly within the thread. Instead of displaying the image, it shows the URI of the image file.

Ps: Only the groups that were created before the GRPS upgrade are using that style.

It uses the default style for groups only when I turn off Override Users' Style Choice for that forum on my board. I'd greatly appreciate if you could provide a fix for this since GRPS is calling styles that are exlclusive for only one forum and user's can't select or overide that style on the board (main vb forum).

Interesting addon. I am still working it out here but have it mostly installed. Would nominate it for MOTM but its missing a few finer points.

1) No Admin Help.

Hi sabert00the, I'll keep an eye out for those fixes, but in the meantime, I have some suggestions to flesh out the moderation and privacy options.

Right now, as I see it, here's how the two options (moderate and private) work and my observations:

Moderate Members:

:up: Non-members must be approved to become full members of a moderated group
:down: If a non-member joins a moderated group, they get a message that they are now a member of that group, not one that tells them they must await approval to be a full member
:down: The Total Members count increases before the prospective member has been approved
:down: Non-members can post in public, moderated groups, no membership needed


Private Posts:

:up: Non-members can't see any threads
:down: Non-members can see membership info (Total Members, View All Members, Latest Members, etc)
:down: Non-members can join any "private" area unless it is also moderated.


Other:

:up: I love the option to only allow the group leader thread-creation permission
:up: Kicking - Members who are "Kicked" from a group can attempt to rejoin
:down: There's no true "Ban" option for leaders to permanently ban problem users from their group (and dealing with their rejoin requests) without site admins creating a special "Cannot Use Groups" usergroup with no group permissions at all


Here's what I'd LOVE to see:

Moderate Members becomes Moderated Group
Private Posts becomes Private Group

Implications on usage:

Public Groups:

Non-members can view posts in Public Groups
Non-members must use a captcha image to create posts or join
Non-members can see membership info
Non-members can join (using captcha image), and become Full Members immediately
Only Full Members can make posts without captcha images and send invites
The captcha suggestion is purely for anti-spam purposes and to encourage non-members to join
Make the captcha an option for group management


Moderated Groups:

Non-members can view, but not post in Moderated Groups at all
Non-members can apply for membership using a captcha image, and become "Pledges", not hidden members
Pledges receive a notice that they must await approval
The Total Members only counts Full Members, not Pledges
A new Total Pledges stat becomes available to leaders, with link to moderation page
When a Pledge is approved, the Pledge receives a PM that they're now full members
Once approved, Full Members can reply to threads and send invites
After a set time limit (7, 14 or 30 days, etc), Pledges expire and are automatically denied and pruned, yet they can apply again afterwards


Private Groups:

Private automatically indicates Moderated, otherwise there is little reason to be Private
Non-members cannot view or post in Private Groups, nor can they see Membership info
Non-members can see the group description, the group leader info and a link to join
Non-members can apply for membership using a captcha image, and become "Pledges", not hidden members

Other Ideas:

A checkbox for "Closed Membership" - This option grants group leaders the ability to close the group to new members, i.e., non-members cannot attempt to join. Non-members retain the same privileges as they did, they just can't try to join.
Banning - Members who are "Banned" from a group cannot attempt to rejoin without the group leader's permission (by removing their ID from a ban list)

sounds to me like a markup/css problem if it's just images. edit your css/html to reflect the globalisation of the vbulletin core. basically prefix your links with "/forums/"

Another minor bug - when you are posting, the breadcrumb at the top for the topic link doesn't work. It's missing the group number in the URL.

I just noticed sabert00the has fixed it for 2.0.11, but in the meantime, here's the fix for that:

Find this line (line 250) in groups/newreply.php: $navbits['viewthread.php?' . $vbulletin->session->vars['sessionurl'] . 't=' . $threadinfo['threadid']] = $threadinfo['title'];
and replace it with $navbits['viewthread.php?' . $vbulletin->session->vars['sessionurl'] . 't=' . $threadinfo['threadid'] . '&g=' . $foruminfo['groupid']] = $threadinfo['title'];



You are essentially pasting . '&g=' . $foruminfo['groupid'] right after $threadinfo['threadid'] on line 250 of groups/newreply.php

I'm unable to use vBadvanced 3.0's integrate function on either browse.php or groups.php.

browse.php generates the following error:
PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare fetch_avatar_url() (previously declared in /ideletedmypath/forums/includes/functions_user.php:259) in /ideletedmypath/forums/includes/functions_grps.php on line 32

It seems to be related to this line, specifically the "OR" part:

if (!function_exists('fetch_avatar_url') OR THIS_SCRIPT != 'groupshome')

I think it needs to use a different method to determine whether to pull the function without using the "OR" statement. By using vBa's integration code, the THIS_SCRIPT variable seems to allow the function to be called again. A nested if seems to work, but I'm not the expert on this code.

Now then, groups.php creates a blank page with no error related to the vBa integration.

This is all I see inside the generated html:

I was able to solve the problem with groups.php, invitation.php, membership.php and viewmembers.php and vBa 3.0 Integration by adding the following line into the "PRE-CACHE TEMPLATES and DATA" area near the top of each affected script:

I also moved the "get special phrase groups" code to the top of that "section" so they would mirror the layout of the other working php files.

This is a different error. It's not the Leader Icon not showing up error. That's a path problem. The integration of vBadvanced wrapped around GRPS causes this error. I was just wondering if anyone else ran into it and had a fix. Essentially the function fetch_avatar_url() that generates the leader icon returns "Array" instead of the correct URL string when vBa is active. I've asked the same question in the vBa forums, looking for a solution. If I find one, I'll post it here as well.

EDIT: Oops, I quoted the wrong error (malformed avatar in postbit), but my error still isn't solved with post #2's suggestions. On a side note, I have another hack which has the same error, VB Image Host.

I have my forums on a subdomain (myforums.mysite.com)...
However, the forums are in a sub-directory (myforums.mysite.com/forums/)

The groups are installed at myforums.mysite.com/groups/

The links are showing the forums root... (ie: the create group link is myforums.mysite.com/forums/?do=creategroup, when it should be myforums.mysite.com/groups/?do=creategroup )

How do I fix this?

Everything is going smooth except the navbar pointing to the wrong links but i can sort them.

Only thing that isn't working right is the group tools on the GRPS navbar dropdown isn't working. I click it then it just does nothing.

Help me understand how this has been installed 204 times. It doesn't create database tables. I've looked in the product.xml, and everywhere else, and nowhere does it create the tables that I can find.

If you had a previous version of this installed, that created the tables, then perhaps that is why it is working. As far as I can tell it works as an upgrade only.

hambil: As far as I can tell, you didn't look very hard or read the instructions. By "I've looked in the product.xml, and everywhere else", you must surely mean, "I've looked in the product.xml, and didn't bother looking anywhere else". Try looking in the grps_installer.php file in the ROOT/groups/tools directory of the product's zip file. You know, the one you run to finish installing GRPS, as described in the install.txt file.

To make it clearer, here's an excerpt from install.txt (the bold text is a clue):

now go to your "groups/include/config_grps.php" and edit it accordingly. if you are having problems using your relative path, then please try your full path.

Now upload the files. and you're good to go (after running adding the product ofcourse).

Those lines of code are called database table entries. If you don't see this, download the zip file again and start over.

Also, had you bothered to look, that database error you snidely referred to was fixed almost immediately by sabret00the, 13 minutes later, four posts below the original error report, on the same page, as noted here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1081072). That means it was fixed 7 months, 29 days, 23 hours, and 47 minutes ago (by your math).

So, in a nutshell, to install the database tables you're missing, run the grps_installer.php script, as described in the install.txt file.

There's no reason to attack me personally. It's not even your hack, and the fact remains the install is rather confusing.

First, I looked for a separate installer, and didn't find it. It is buried three levels deep (root/groups/tools) and it's not named install.php. I'm not sure why it exists anyway, since all it does is create the database tables that should typically be done in the product.xml 'install' section. An external installer is usually reserved for multi-step installs that require user input.

Second, a big part of the reason I missed it is the instructions told me I was done:

"Now upload the files. and you're good to go (after running adding the product ofcourse)."

I took that to mean I needed to load the product.xml file, and that was it. To put another, critical line after that all but guarantees people will not see it. It's not like this is my first install. I write hacks.

I saw this request was posted a long time ago, but not since. I'm wondering if anyone is still having trouble with, or doesn't like the way breadcrumbs work with GRPS, and would like to know how to change it to work like vBulletin's standard (my preference for viewthread.php):

Instead of this (the GRPS default for viewthread.php):

If so, please let me know. The first crumb method shown is vBulletin-style crumb. The second method is more of a stand-alone crumb, as GRPS is meant to run mostly outside of vBulletin forums other than sharing the user database.

To maintain consistency throughout my site and the other hacks I have running, I had to modify the crumbs in GRPS to work more like the standard bread crumbs of vBulletin. This involves some minor edits to the php files' navbits. If anyone's interested, I'll send you a step-by-step. Obviously the steps would need to be repeated after every patch of GRPS, so if there's no interest, I'll understand. I've been testing it for a week now with no strange behavior, so I'm pretty sure it'll work for anyone.

I don't know if sabret00the would want me to post how to do it here or as an "addon", since this isn't a fix to a bug, but a change to a function that works as he intended.

sabret00the: any objections to me posting instructions on how to change the breadcrumbs to work like vBulletin crumbs here? Any chance of making this an option in v3.0 for those of us who want an integrated breadcrumb? It doesn't look like it would be hard to code the conditional. ;)

EDIT: Blank page fix for vBa 3.0 Integration

I was able to solve the problem with groups.php, invitation.php, membership.php and viewmembers.php and vBa 3.0 Integration by adding the following line into the "PRE-CACHE TEMPLATES and DATA" area near the top of each affected script:

// get special data templates from the datastore
$specialtemplates = array();

I also moved the "get special phrase groups" code to the top of that "section" so they would mirror the layout of the other working php files.

EDIT: Possible fix for PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare fetch_avatar_url()

I think the nested if statement is working as a fix for the php fatal error from the functions_grps.php file:

I changed this:

if (!function_exists('fetch_avatar_url') OR THIS_SCRIPT != 'groupshome')
{
... some code ...
}

to this:
if (!function_exists('fetch_avatar_url'))
{
if (THIS_SCRIPT != 'groupshome')
{
... some code ...
}
}


So far, everything seems to be working. I may have been able to change the OR to an AND to achieve a similar effect. I'm still rusty. :D
i cut down the need for modification by renaming the function.

This is a different error. It's not the Leader Icon not showing up error. That's a path problem. The integration of vBadvanced wrapped around GRPS causes this error. I was just wondering if anyone else ran into it and had a fix. Essentially the function fetch_avatar_url() that generates the leader icon returns "Array" instead of the correct URL string when vBa is active. I've asked the same question in the vBa forums, looking for a solution. If I find one, I'll post it here as well.

EDIT: Oops, I quoted the wrong error (malformed avatar in postbit), but my error still isn't solved with post #2's suggestions. On a side note, I have another hack which has the same error, VB Image Host.

I have my forums on a subdomain (myforums.mysite.com)...
However, the forums are in a sub-directory (myforums.mysite.com/forums/)

The groups are installed at myforums.mysite.com/groups/

The links are showing the forums root... (ie: the create group link is myforums.mysite.com/forums/?do=creategroup, when it should be myforums.mysite.com/groups/?do=creategroup )

How do I fix this?

Everything is going smooth except the navbar pointing to the wrong links but i can sort them.

Only thing that isn't working right is the group tools on the GRPS navbar dropdown isn't working. I click it then it just does nothing.

Any ideas?

I never got it fixed, so yes I still see "Array" in place of the leader avatar url.

I'm just not using CMPS v3's integration feature for now. I probably have to add a global variable from GRPS to CMPS. I just haven't had to time to figure out which variable to add.

Only when it's on. It happens with one other hack too, so I was hoping someone had found a fix for it. The groups look nice with vba, and that's the last bug I ran into I didn't fix, so it's a shame really.

As far as i know, yes it is. whether or not the Zoints people have updated it i don't know. it's also incompatible with vBSEO as far as i know. That said i do recall some users saying their was a fix posted on the vBSEO site.

I unfortunately have the same error. When attempting to make a new thread it just throws a permission error. I double checked my usergroup permissions and tried changing the option of only group leader making threads and it didn't seem to help.

Everything else went great though. I was never able to get the older version to work, but this one installed just fine.

Yup, just use the group editor. change the group category id to the one you desire.

i think you would just type into your browser

you need to pull up the exact path to the file in your browser, then it will run

Yes I get it working between upgrades, Not sure what was changes to get the icons path working you actually helped me on that one. But for the permissions which are broke now this has never happened until this last upgrade...

Found a bug when trying to view a member's groups from the postbit that throws an SQL error (only happens to people that are in groups). Here is the problem and the fix. In viewgroups.php find:
