Thankyou.
Yes, finally 2.1.2 has arrived, I'll install it tonight. Andrew, are you going to create a feature that show how much bandwidth that user have left when downloading the file? That'd be very helpful to users.

I am uploading the first beta of 2.1.2 into the first post in this thread for testing and comment. As always, please take a backup of your database before upgrading in case of serious bugs.
I have also created an online user manual for LDM, and have removed this from the distribution zipo file. You can access the manual at http://www.eirma.org/devel/LDM
ok. I can't take it anymore... I'm gunna install tonight (was gunna wait till official release but its toooo tempting. :p :))

BUG (or something):
1. none of my previously uploaded videos/music files play any more. a newly uploaded one seems to work....but all old ones before the update don't. :/ hmm... which is the one in admincp that sets the path for jukebox playback? maybe I changed someting I shouldn't have. :(
2. if the link is wrong or the file is huge. open the jukebox. while still "connecting" close the window or press stop and close the window.
mine hangs the browser (ff and/or mathon/IE).

Thanks very much - installed 2.10 onto vb3.53 and it works beautifully.
One small bug - if you make a link category accessible only to members of a particular group, it seems that although not visible in the main page, the category is still available in the drop down menu - though you do get the no permission message. This, of course is a very very minor bug indeed :)
Just a thought - how about having group specific categories (maybe optionally) visible to non group members but with an 'available to members of zzz group only' or somesuch message in similar fashion to the way forum groups work?.

Yes, I'm part way through trying to redesign the access permissions. I made a mistake way back in version 0.something to use forum based permissions and most of the tricky questions since then have been a result of that decision. Bear with me - we'll get there in the end...

Andrew,
Thanks for the work you've put into this new release! I love the clickable link to show the full image! :D
Couple of questions/comments if I may...
Is it possible to substitute a small graphic (like a magnifying glass) for the "[+]" for the full sized image link?
The comments link still doesn't seem to allow non-members to add comments if the permissions were set to allow it.
I have a dark theme with a light gray font but some of the admin options seem like the background colors are hardcoded. How can I fix this?

when upgrdaed to 2.1.0 on vb 3.5.3
the viewing of the cat/links is very slow and it over load the server
i have about 677 categories and 6722 available entries
is there away to downgrade to 2.0.5 ?! and if posible can someone send me the files ><
Just so that you know - version 2.1.0 has an awful algorithm to build the category jump menu, which slows down badly as the number of categories increases above a hundred or so. The code in 2.1.2 beta is much faster (probably 50-100 times in your case), plus the option not to display the jump menu at all.

I have one category as the main index(forum link). Under that are many layers of sub-categories. The link in the forum only shows the latest added file in the main index. Not the latest added file of all categories.
The same goes for all categories I have linked with the forum; they only show the latest file in that categorie, not in all sub-categories thereoff.
Is there a solution yet for opening the pdf's straight from the link directory?

I believe that this is quite difficult to do. You have to have a separate process running on the web server to track how much has been uploaded, and, from what I've read, it doesn't work reliably on all systems.

When clicking on a pdf in the LDM, it will not open. Since the earlier in this thread it was stated that there is no solution to this, I would like to know if you have found one in the mean time.

I wrote LDM mainly to handle pdfs on my site and it works just fine. The issue is about how Adobe Acrobat integrates itself with the browser. Depending on how you have set it up, the difficulty can be in triggering an Open/Save As dialogue.

In 2.1.2b1 you achieve this by editing the category. You will find lower down on the page (in the next beta, these will become tabbed items) the key display options which can be set for the category, and which are inherited by its children. This includes setting the preferred linkbit template

Maybe I go crazy ;) I've just taken a look at the zip file on the site and the contents seem to say 2.1.2 in all the right places. Usually, the failure to update the version number means that the VB installer has not run the installation code, and the only way to fix that it to uninstall

A quick possible bug in the beta:
There are a few layout problems with Internet Explorer for Mac. In the the full Links Bit template setting, the 'collapse' arrows in the category header goes off the header and inches to the right, making the screen double wide and introduces a horizontal scrollbar. Also, in the category bit the 'Category' header is aligned to the left, and the collapse arrows align to the center. These problems don't occur with Safari or Firefox.
Andrew, I can't stress enough how awesome you are and how great this product is. Thanks!!

Not sure - I registered on your site and tried it and I stayed logged on.
One thought - the LDM code does not handle session ids, which I think are used by VBulletin as an alternative way of tracking users who do not enable cookies in their browser - it's a hassle which I had not thought necessary.

It may be an issue with the new vb software (and nothing to do with this superb hack), a few of us are experiencing this. A few things, make sure you don't have domain.com and xxxx.domain.com confused in your links, you're better off using the www part. Also, make sure that your "remember me" box is automatically checked. Some people have found that by turning AJAX off, IE will stop dropping your log in cookies. Personally, I use Netscape or FF, and there are no drop issues.

I have my Maximum file size showing this size:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
But in my settings it is set way higher as you can see:

The problem is that if a file is over 4megs or so, then it doesn't get uploaded for soem reason. Why is it doing that?

Uploads are limited by various settings on your site. There are some that you can change within VBulletin - for example using the admincp/attachments/filetypes table - and some that are set in the php.ini file, i.e. upload_max_filesize and post_max_size. The php.ini values are absolute limits - you cannot over-ride them inside VBulletin. Furthermore, you should take care that upload_max_filesize is smaller than post_max_size. The limit you are seeing on the form is the minimum of these.
I'm note sure why you are falling over with 4M uploads when the setting is 8M.

Since my site is on a seperate hosting company then I guess editting the php.ini file is out of the question.
The filetypes in admincp are the same as the screenshot I previously shown.
I'm guessing 4megs but it might be more like the 8meg mark that it won't seem to accept. Any other ideas?

You should ask your ISP to increase the two settings upload_max_filesize and post_max_size. There is no way round these limits.

I have uploaded new code with these problems fixed. The changes are minor and in the local_links_include.php code

AndrewD - couple of suggestions. Perhaps add a "Home" link directly on the menu bar - that would save people having to click on Categories and then select "Home Categories" to get back to the top Category.
I've also been playing about with the layout and I think it looks better and is better "usability" if the category listing were the top panel and the info panel below them, see:http://forums.randi.org/local_links.php for what I mean. (Edited to add: Sine posting I've taken the plunge and installed the latest beta so my "customisations" regarding the layout have been lost.)

Andrew, I thought there is a problem with the cookies that I should report you as well. Firefox had none of this but in IE, whenever I refresh the page or click another link on the same page, the vbulletin login form appears. I'm not sure why it causes this, I'll PM you a a user/pass if you like.

The release includes a plugin for forumhome which patches any forums that are set up as redirects to LDM or LDM categories. For links to the base category, it shows the latest submission. For links to individidual categories, it shows also the number of entries. See image

I didn't tell you this because it doesn't and should not have done so for you. Did you configure 2.0.5 to use a different table prefix?
I also warned everyone with every release to take a backup.

Andrew, instead of having LDM patch to a separate "LDM" forum on forumhome, (I have enough subforums), is there any way of just adding code that says how many new subbmissions there are to the LDM area? Kind of like how the welcome panel on forumhome tells you how many new posts and new threads there are??

Yes, this depends on the permissions you set on the LDM admin/permissions page. Take a look particularly at the can_access_link permission.
If I'm missing your question, send me more information (e.g. your web site and an account with admin privs) and I'll gladly take a look for you.

I tried to extend this to vBPortal myself, but didn't get too far, my knowledge of php is too limited .. :(
I found that there were so many good hacks, mods and themes that had been adapted for vBAdvanced that reverting back to vBA was a far easier option than spending many long hours trying to adjust these mods/hacks for vBP!
Now got a redundant vBP license.

Andrew, would it be possible to make LDM auto delete uploaded files from a set category. I was thinking about adding a requests section for small files, obviously these files wouldn't be needed forever so if they were pruned after 7 days and deleted from the server by the script it would save me a bit of time and sever space as I know full well I'd forget to delete things.
I only updated to a version that allowed uploads a couple of days ago and it's great. Your efforts are appreciated, thanks.

if a usergroup is set to 2 files / 100mb - will it stop them at 2 files or 100mb? that is, will it take the lowest first?
currently, i host large files and small files. i want my users to be able to get two large files (100mb limit) or many small files (up to 100mb). should i just turn off the files and keep the 100mb byte limit?
any info most appreciated.

Yes, you should probably disable the files limit. LDM stops the user at the first limit to be hit. For the bytes limit, it prevents a hit if this will take the user over their limit.

The problem is, that Users can put links after the Main Categorie, thats not good. Users should only put links in the last Kategorie.
I hope you can understand what i mean :nervous:

The easiest way to achieve this at the moment is to 'close' all the categories in which you do not want your users to add new entries. Leave open the categories where you want them to be able to add new entries. You do this with Administer/Categories/open and close. Closed categories will accept entries from the admin but not from other users.
The next release will provide separate 'add link' permissions for each category, making it easier to do what you want.

No, this is not possible at present, because a) it would probably make the display look a mess and b) it makes the database query more complicated and expensive to perform. I'll give it some thought.

I think it would be pretty straightfoward to write a short script to achieve this, if you are comfortable with php and sql. I suggest working through the csv import feature of this hack.
You would need to do the following:
a) shift your attachments out of the database into the filesystem
b) the script would then loop through a join of the attachment and post tables to create properly formatted csv records which this hack could read
You also need to work out the directory where VB is storing the attachments, which is formed by cutting up the userid into separate digits

Is it possible to improve the Search function? I have almost 1000 files and if I do a Search or advanced search for something I get nothing shows up.
Example:
File Cat v1
Cat v2
Cat v3
Cat v4
If I search for 'Cat' it says I have nothing named Cat. If I search for 'Cat v1' then that file will show up, but not the other ones. It seems that you need to type the exact file name for it to show up.
Also, if you have several files with similar names, the search seems to bypass them and say you have nothing with that name.
Example:
Dogpic
Doghair
Dogdung
Typing in 'Dog' under search does not show those files unless you you type in the exact file name. I'm using v2.1.2. Any ideas?
BTW, is there a way to have it make a link to display the newest 10 files uploaded? Or perhaps a link to a page showing them or even showing the top 10 downloaded files, etc.?
Cheers

Andrew,
The new version is looking fantastic. It had been a couple of betas since I last upgraded, but with all of the new stuff in this one I had to upgrade and it worked flawlessly. Fantastic job.
With that said, I have a question and a couple comments:
1. [EDIT: I answered my own question and implemented this myself] In the photo linkbit - is it possible to have it so when you click the thumbnail, it directly opens the main picture, instead of going to the entry? But, if you click the text (the name of the pic) under the thumbnail, it still goes to the entry.
2. [EDIT: This is not a bug, I see how the Scan function works now. The placement of the category jump menu is confusing because it is so close to the directory selectmen drop-down, and they look related]Possible bug: When you are using the "Scan" function, when you select the category in the drop-down list, it sends you automatically to the category page you chose, instead of simply selecting the category and allowing you to scan. So when you select category currently, you immediately have to press back to stay on the same page.
3. Thumbnails: I struggled to get the "thumbnail caching" feature to work. However, I realized that I need to write the correct permission for the "thumbs_dir" folder, and then it worked perfectly. You should remind people that they need to "777" the thumbs directory.
4. Recent comments: I still think it would be a very nice idea to have the option of having the last 2-3 comments visible inside each entry table. I'm not a graphic artist either, but I think it would be possible to create a subtable inside each entry box underneath the descriptions area that says "Recent Comments" at the top, with a very basic display of the last 2-3 comments inside, and has the "Add Comment/View Rating" link to the main comments entry screen at the bottom.
Thanks Andrew.

777?
Isn't this bad to do from a security standpoint?
I do not know, to be honest, all I know is that the website has to be able to write to whatever your thumbs directory is in order to create the thumbnails. It seems that only doing it to your thumbs direc. isn't so bad, assuming that's all you use the directory for.

Something I've been pondering over is if this can be made into a credit system for a forum. Each user gets "X" amount of download credits to spend. They can get more credits if they upload files, post in the forums, or even get double credits if they click on a banner ads (this would be limited to given once per day per user though). Would something like this be able to done?

@Langly: I really like that idea. I think www.animeotaku.info uses a system like that. I have asked how to do it but Ranma never got back with me. :(
Does anyone know how to place restrictions on the number of links a user can click on in a 24 hour period? I host large downloads and need to only allow each user to download x number of files a day. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, this is in 2.1.2 beta, in the Administration dropdown menu under "Download Quotas". You can choose file limits per day or bandwidth limits per day, based on user groups.

Hy
I got a problem with uploading larger File. I always get a File Size to big error when i try to upload larger File than 8 MB.
The php.ini parameters upload_max_filesize and post_max_sizecode limit the maximum size of files that can be handled using the upload feature of LDM, irrespective of the limits set within vBulletin and LDM.
This 2 parameters are set to 20M in php ini File.
The Limit in vb Attachments is set to 20Mb too.
Do Anybody have a idea?

Peoples browsers will typically time out after 8megs which is why most host providers max the uploads to 8megs. How I got around this was to split larger file into under 8meg files. It also makes your file database look larger than it is ;)

Great hack, installed.
Couple concerns: It appears that when a non-mod/non-admin submits a link, he's able to choose the "When Submitted" date. IMO this shouldn't be allowed - anyway to disable it? Same goes with the "Review Frequency". I don't want me reg users to decide how often their link needs moderating... And also the display order can be chosen? Am I missing a setting or something?
TIA.

is it possible to include a screenshot with a non-image upload? instead of having it as a url, have it as a upload. is that possible?
btw, is this hack still being supported?
edit:
im wondering if it's possible to edit the local_links.php so that it will allow the user to upload an image instead of specifying a url for the location of the image. here is the part that needs editing in local_links.php:
if ($linkimg) {
$imgcheck = check_url($linkimg);
if ($imgcheck == $LINK_NO_ACCESS) {
$err = $vbphrase['ll_error_protocol'].' '.$linkimg.'. <a href='.$url.'><b>'.$vbphrase['ll_return'].'</b></a>';
eval(standard_error($err));
exit;
} elseif ($imgcheck == $LINK_NO_REMOTE_DOWNLOADS) {
$err = $vbphrase['ll_error_remote'].' '.$linkimg.'. <a href='.$url.'><b>'.$vbphrase['ll_return'].'</b></a>';
eval(standard_error($err));
exit;
}
}
can anyone help?

I'm pretty sure this hack will get my vote over ecdownloads. This one looks way nicer and seems to have much more functionality. One question though:
Is it possible to extract some variables that displays download stats? Smth like this:

I'm pretty sure that total files, downloads (hits) and catagories arent much of a problem, since I've seen screens that display them. Its the total traffic I'm mostly interested in. :cheeky: And will I then be able to display those stats on any page? Preferably the front page of a vbadvanced portal.
Thnx in advance for answering this.

I'm currently running LDM and my site has two styles, the "Default" style and the "Approx" style which I installed after installing LDM. Well, I have a problem that when I view my site in the Approx style, I cannot see the "Last Post" information on the Category Link I created to connect to the LDM main page (Category: Exhaust Sound Clips Collection). The "Last Post" info DOES appear when I use the Default style, however. I tried reinstalling the LDM product with overwrite but it did not fix the problem. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Fixed it. It was a conditional in the Approx template that would not allow lastpostinfo to appear if the category was a link. Took the conditional off and all is well.

Any ideas?
If your example is accurate, the problem is probably with MySQL's fulltext search, which LDM uses by default. The search engine in MySQL skips short words. If you really want to find short words, then you have to use the LIKE searching method. Try setting match_using_like on the LDM admin settings page
I've been doing a lot of work on the search feature with TundraSoul - this should be ready to go live soon - and I will check that it works better with your case.
BTW, is there a way to have it make a link to display the newest 10 files uploaded? Or perhaps a link to a page showing them or even showing the top 10 downloaded files, etc.?
Cheers
This is more or less what the LDM modules for vbAdvanced do.

Andrew,
The new version is looking fantastic.
Noted - thanks
I've thought about this and am considering a javascript 'pop up' when you hover over the 'ratings/comments'. There are two things I have to look out for - first, screen space, and second, keeping the sql efficient. Building the linkbit is already rather hairy - it requires a 'Join' on about five tables and I'm concerned that adding another join may slow things down badly. But if we handled this with a pop up, then we could keep the sql efficient.

Yes, this is an easy module for the vbadvanced plugin. Will you be happy with total traffic, etc, in the last 30 days? The information you want comes from a table that keep track of people's accesses to LDM - and the admin is able to prune that table to keep it small, so I'd recommend a time limit

Featured sites (in the latest betas) are taken from the 'favourites' of a selected user. On the admin/settings page, you specify which user and how many of his/her favourites to display as featured sites.

Its the links_main template. This constructs a series of tables, and the last one is the table holding the stats.
If you wanted to rearrange things, you would have to play around with that template and the relative placing and size of the tables.

Just a question - did you start by adding a smaller file, then editing it - or did the size of the rar file change after you created the entry? There's an obscure bug in LDM which I've only just found - if the file size changes after you first create the entry, then users who try to open the download on the fly will get a corrupt file and the file size does not get reset. The file size only resets correctly after someone has correctly downloaded the file and saved it to disk.

Those 2 fields are definitely missing from the local_linkscat within the beta, and they were there in 2.1.0. I know you've changed a lot in the local_links_admininclude.php but I would think the system needs to know what style and order to show a cat .. ?

How big are you trying to go? as far as I know, uploads via web pages really become unreliable (whatever settings you provide) at around 4-10 megabytes. I'm not an expert, but I imagine that files bigger than this really need to uploaded via an ftp utility.
Having said that, these are the settings you should be looking for:
in php.ini:
upload_max_filesize and post_max_sizecode limit the maximum size of files that can be handled using the upload feature of LDM, irrespective of the limits set within vBulletin and LDM. post_max_sizecode should have a larger value than upload_max_filesize
in te vb admincp/Attachments/Filetypes
maximum size per filetype.

local_file_root: indicates whether files are located in terms of their position on your web site ('web space') or the raw server ('server space')
local_file_root_prefix: force files to be in a particular part of 'web space' or 'server space'
upload_dir: the specific directory in which the uploads are stored, relative to the constraints imposed by the above
Example 1: your upload directory, uploads, is a top-level directory in http://yoursite (http://yoursite/), ie all uploads will be stored inside http://yoursite/uploads -> set local_file_root to 0, leave local_file_root_prefix blank and set upload_dir to /uploads
Example 2: your upload directory, uploads, is to be kept outside your website so that curious users can't get at it. You want it to be a subdirectory of /data on the the computer which is acting as server. All local documents that you will 'serve' to your user community will also be held in subdirectories of /data: set local_file_root to 1, set local_file_root_profix to /data and set upload_dir to /uploads
Two ways: Either use standard BBcodes [img] within the descriptions or title. Or set link_image_size to a non-zero value, in which case the link entry form will extend to include an additional item, which is the image to accompany the entry. In the second case, your web server must have the GD2 library available.
Hi Andrew.
I'm getting an error trying to upload files as a test user.
I have my local_root set to 0
My local_file_root_prefix is set to /images/linksfiles
I'm trying to set my upload directory to /uploads (being a sub directory of images/linksfiles) but I got an invalid directory error so I ended up leaving it blank thinking it would dump the images into the linksfiles folder.
No problems linking off the server and everything is working well...AWESOME piece of work. I have my permissions set so registered users can do their own uploads. When I come in as a test user and try to upload I get the error failed to move file
Any thoughts? All the folder permissions are set to 777 so its got me stuffed. I think I'm misunderstanding the config of the folders but not sure.

I tried your settings on my PC and they work fine, so I suspect that it's something to do with file and directory permissions.
Maybe you can try this for me and let me know the results (by PM preferably)
Edit includes/local_link_include.php and look for the line if (!move_uploaded_file($GPC['tmp_name'], $fullfile)) return(NN);
Take a copy of this file and temporaily edit those lines so that they read
if (!move_uploaded_file($GPC['tmp_name'], $fullfile)) {
echo 'move failed :'.$GPC['tmp_name'].':'.$fullfile.':<br />';
exit;
}
run a test and take note of the message that goes on the screen
Then replace the original file.

2.12 always in beta?
Not forever - but there's work going on behind the scenes and I don't want to launch another version (which will be the final beta) until it's all done and tested. Another week or so, depending on how my main job goes.

Hi AndrewD, I've been using your only script for file transfer over the past year. everything works out best ..but the only problem I'm facing is that, the script doesn't have HTTP 206 Support...without HTTP 206 Support ..if my download were broken I'm unable to resume the portion I've missed during my download. I hope you will spend little time working on this. Thank you!

I try that in php.ini .. but
If IT is better to upload via FTP fine , but how do I still index them in this system

I tried your settings on my PC and they work fine, so I suspect that it's something to do with file and directory permissions.
Maybe you can try this for me and let me know the results (by PM preferably)
Edit includes/local_link_include.php and look for the line if (!move_uploaded_file($GPC['tmp_name'], $fullfile)) return(NN);
Take a copy of this file and temporaily edit those lines so that they read
if (!move_uploaded_file($GPC['tmp_name'], $fullfile)) {
echo 'move failed :'.$GPC['tmp_name'].':'.$fullfile.':<br />';
exit;
}
run a test and take note of the message that goes on the screen
Then replace the original file.
*edit* PM sent...need to read the whole message :)

FTP the files into a directory on your web server, e.g. yoursite.com/myuploads
Use the 'scan directory' facilities in the LDM admin - with version 2.1.0, you find these on the admin/import and export page; with 2.1.2, they move to the admin/category page.
You can then do a mass import of the files you uploaded into LDM.
Alternatively, ftp them and simply add one entry at a time to ldm in the normal way by setting a the url to /myuploads/file1.type, etc

Yes. The code checks that the person installing the product is a member of user group 6, which is what I understood to be the standard administrator group.
If this is not the case, then LDM gives the message you saw.
a) You can get round this by editing includes/local_links_admininclude.php and commenting out these lines at the beginning:
if (!is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo, 6)) {
echo '*** Installation functions are only available to administrators<br />';
exit;
}
You may run into problems in LDM itself - I'm not sure, so it would be a great help if you could tell me something about your admin account on your VB site - in which what user group id is it? Any idea why not 6?

I have a little problem. I go from the vbulletin admin panel into the log file of the statistics of Links and Downloads Manager.
In the table that appears in log of the last downloads, the 1st column that have the URL of the download doesn?t show the complete link. For example show in the image.
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
Please if anyone knows where I can change the code of the template of this table. Can I make it to show the complete link in two lines?
P.S. This isn't a problem of the weight of my screen. Between the 1st col and 2nd col the table have a lot of blank space.

Yes, this was deliberate. It's an easy change to the code in local_links_admin.php. Go to the line which reads iif(strlen($myrow['linkurl'])<=48,$myrow['linkurl'],substr($myrow['linkurl'],0,45).'...').'
and simply change this to read $myrow['linkurl']

Seems that the eBux is the most popular in vbb 3.5 now, and i think it can be a priority in your development of LDM to have a hook for the function of point systems - So with the point system the LDM can increase the active members of a furom. :rolleyes:

Yes, on your first board, you applied forum permissions and your new board can't find a forum with the same forumid (maybe you recreated your forums?). Go into LDM/Admin/Categories/mass edit to mass change the forum associations

You can certainly link to files on another server. You cannot use LDM to upload to the other server - I imagine that would be considered a security breach. Monitoring folders on another site is not currently available but I don't think this would be difficulty to add.

Hello AndrewD,
I got it basically running now phew. It looked like a tough nut to crack for me. Your documentation is helpful, but something basic was wrong on the testboard (still had the production board home url set).
It would indeed be a security breach if you uploaded to just a foreign server, and that isn't possible afaik. But it should be possible to install a tiny helper PHP script on the remote server. The LDM makes contact with the helper PHP file when something has to be uploaded to the remote server. Another way to say/look at/implement is to have a 'link' inside LDM to a full remote uploader. Just dirty inserting a link is something even I may pull off, but making it neat and a part of LDM requires a coder.
I once had some sort of PHP FTP script. It was part of a tool running on my PC to FTP files to a server. Different thing, but makes ideas.
Both the forum and the file server are ours and can run PHP/SQL.
Monitoring remote folders will be great. It's very helpful to add all those ancient files at once.
Is it possible to schedule one or more monitorings? We have some community wide play by e-mail campaign and people use a directory to upload zip/rar saved games. It would be neat if a tool scanned that directory a few times a day to insert new links.

Thank you for this hack, I'm loving LDM so far.
I was trying to figure out which of the files/templates actually does enters into the db the scanned files. I would like it to be able to scan the directory recursivly and for each sub folder create a new category with the folder name. Perhaps just for safey, there could be an additional value given telling LDM when to stop scanning (after how many subdirectories)
Thanks again...

I haven't tested this myself, but I imagine that if you associate the links category with one of your board forums which is a 'subscription' forum, then the category will only be visible to users who have subscribed to that forum

I'm in the middle of developing an xml import facility for LDM. I think that recursive searches (and scheduled searches, which another post suggested recently) should be handled by an external script and brought in via an xml import. This would help to keep LDM simple - it's growing a bit too much. Thanks for the suggestion - I'm think about how to include it in the 'import' process.

Hi AndrewD :)
As you know I'm setting up a new webpage/forum and I've come up against an interesting problem. I can't for the life of me find a "contacts" hack where I can list contact details for people/clubs/organisations etc ..
Now it seems to me that it would be sensible to keep these sort of contact details in the same sort of place as web links, so I was wondering if we might be able to add this to LDM?
I think just about everything would be the same as adding a link, with the only difference being the lack of a URL to enter .. so perhaps a tickbox in the URL entry area of the "Add Link" page saying "This entry does not require a URL" ..
I could then enter the name of the person/club/organisation in the "Name" field and the telephone number in the "Description" field and bobs your uncle, a fully functioning contacts system within the LDM .. :)
What do you think? (I'm sure there are things that could be added/changed to make it a better contact system, but I'm trying to keep it simple ;))
Oh, btw, do you still need that test forum I left up for you to look into that bug?

Check the values of your site's php settings for upload_max_filesize and post_max_sizecode. In the back of my head, I seem to remember that one can get the wrong error message if these are too small, or if post_max_filesize is set smaller than upload_max_filesize.

Quick question/suggestion ..
I've got one LDM installed on one site with lots of links in different cats .. and I've got another LDM installed on a different site with a few links and cats ..
I'd like to move some of the links from one site to the other .. but when I export I don't have any options for selecting which links I want .. therefore I have to have them all ..
When I then go to import, again I have no option which links I want, and it would appear that if I already have some links/cats in the database it doesn't really know what to do with the imported links .. ie it tries to import into the cats already there, not create new cats with the correct names ..
When you get a chance, could you have a look at the export/import options and try and beef them up a bit. Selective export/import would be good :)

Yes, I've been aware of that for some time. The csv export/import is too restrictive. I've begun work on an xml mechanism, which currently works fine for complete databases and needs extending to allow selective imports, including into already-existing databases.

I'm afraid it isn't as simple as that. In order to tell vbportal what to display, LDM needs to read items from the database. This is how the add in for vbadvanced works - it runs a miniscript to scann the database and then place the information into a form that vbadvanced can display.
