hey how do i allow someone to submits a link without extension, like url's rapidshare downloads... i have limited space on my server and have all my users to use rapidshare to store like psd or huge graphic files. I want to allow those type of links but the extension is only limited to the one configured in the admin area.

Here is the second beta for 2.0.7. It fixes/adds the main points discussed in the last two days.

I hope there are no serious bugs - I'm going away this weekend and will be pretty busy for three weeks.

A start is always helpful - perhaps there are others around who can assist? - here is the English phrase set for the *final* 2.0.7 release (not yet loaded).

The entry post in this thread now contains the release candidate version of LDM 2.0.7.

Main changes since the second beta:

+ Category selector included within main displays
+ Searches default to looking for the string as entered (rather than the individual keywords)
+ Admin can restrict upload filetypes beyond the list given in the VB attachment table
+ New linkbit template included, enabling two-stage viewing of links
= bugs fixed
> Import uses current datestamp (rather than 1/1/1970!)
> Linkbits have anchors so that link edits/inserts return user to the right place on the screen
> Various security checks added for uploaded images
> Data entry for 'When Submitted' reflects site's date/time settings

When I return from a rather long business trip, 2.0.7 will become the official release, provided no serious bugs have been found. *No further changes in functionality will be made in 2.0.7* - anything else will now wait until the next revision. after upgrading it no longer shows the thumbnails, it says "Can't load" and the image location. I used both jpg and gif images and they were working in the old version. If I embed it as a [ img] in the description I can get it there, but not in the thumbnail section. This is for remote images from another site. If I copy the image to my site then link from there it works fine. this is all using cURL as allow_url_fopen is off.

also on the edit/add link page (local_links.php?action=editlink&linkid=11&catid=5&page=1) I get this message

I should know better than to change things that were working!

These are straightforward mistakes, introduced when I tried to do something else. I'm too tired to think straight at the moment, but after a night's sleep, I'll test and upload the fixes.

Bugs fixed are concerned with thumbnail images, links from the new short template and validation of uploads.

edit local_links_include.php, around line 1300 or so, function get_links2; a few lines later, just before the line eval("\$links .= \"".fetch_template('links_vbalinks')."\";"); insert a line $linkhit = $nhits+1;, then patch the links_vbalinks template in the same way as the linkbit. I'll make this change to the php in the final release.

Hello AndrewD, I use your download manager version 2.0.4 for VB 3.5gold ..the purpose of using your download system is to host music files on the site and some video files as well, but I notice when download a large file the script only open one concurrent connection per file, is there anyway you can make the download manager script to open up 3 concurrent connection per download? ....while the path is hidden ..

If Windows, we discovered a serious performance glitch, which has been corrected in later versions of LDM.

About a year ago, people were having problems with an earlier version, which only showed up when they were using Bulgarian and Korean translations. Now that really taxed my tiny brain. We got to the bottom of it!

can you show hottest links or specific category links on forumhome? not with vbadvanced

Easiest way is to create forums which are redirects to the the category of interest, ie. use local_links.php?catid=N as the link. For standard categories, LDM will create these automagically within Add Category (look down the bottom of the form).

For What's hot, etc, you just give a negative catid:
What's Hot: -7
What's New: -8
Just hover the mouse over the Show drop down menu to find out the catid's for the various options.

If you want these to expand into showing a list of the actual hot, new, etc, entries on forumhome, I can't think offhand how you would achieve this without using the portal interface. Perhaps a plugin could be written.

Hello Andrew, the file hosted on local server not offsite, and I'm running on linux ...the speed is kinda slow on one connection ..usually with two connections open would increase speed better ...could you please help ..thank you ..

Each to their own! Actually, I tend to agree with you - the various bits and pieces have been added over time as people have asked for more and more. The virtue of the VB template based system is that you can always slim things down, redesign, etc. I will be delighted to distribute other templates, but graphics design is not my core competence!

Again, the first is just a template edit - I think you should really do this yourself - preferences will be very individual and site specific. The second is worth thinking about - but again, people are starting to complain that the input forms get too complex, so one starts needing extra switches and there's more to go wrong. Another option would be simply to trim the field down to a certain number of characters. Only problem with that is that one has to be very careful if people put bbcodes, etc, in the field - you can end up killing a bbcode in the middle.

Hi AndrewD :) .. yes I've finally joined the dark side and have downloaded 3.5 .. so I thought I'd install 2.0.7rc and see how you're getting on :)

Couple of things that I've noticed on the front page, where it lists the top 10 pop entries and how many cats/entries .. it doesn't remember the collapsible table at all. The "Links and Downloads Database" table is something I would prefer to stay collapsed once I've clicked the button .. also, is there an easy way in the settings to turn this bit off and just have the single line we have in the 3.0 version?

Not sure what the point of the "Categories" table being collapsible? You may as well take that off hadn't you?

Also within this bit, can you put a non breaking space (I think that's what's needed) in between a sub-cats name and the [] bit .. else it breaks if you have a large amount of sub-cats running over more than one line ..

Something within the search isn't quite right .. when I try a search from the drop-down menu the first page comes up ok, but when I click on page 2 (or any of the page numbers I've just seen) it seems to forget what it's meant to be searching for and shows a list of all the links in the database starting from page 1 .. (happens from the search page too) ..

Also, in regards to the search page, it seems to ignore if a link has more than one cat associated with the link .. therefore increasing the amount of "Entries" the search comes back with .. is that by design?

On the "My Favourites" page .. if you don't have any favourites it might be worth having a little message saying "You have no favourites at this time, to add a favourite link to this list please click on the +F link next to the link you would like to make a favourite" (or something)

Hmm .. that's all I can think of at the mo .. hope that helps .. I'm sure to be back :)

A few more things ..

Could you change the "Rate" link to "Rate and Comment"? .. it's not very clear you can comment on links (perhaps have one link for Rate and one for Comment) ..

When you do have some comments for a link, could it show how many comments there are? ie "Comments (3)"

Once you get into the comments page .. could we have the comments run top down old to new .. instead of how it is at the moment with new comments going to the top of the list. (perhaps make this a user option?)

Maybe split Rate and Comments up a little bit by adding a "can_comment_link" permission .. so people can rate, but not comment .. or visa versa ..

Have a setting/permission "can_moderate_comments" that allows comments to go straight onto the link comments list, while "can_comment_link" drops into the moderation list .. would work the same way the links permissions work at the mo.

Could you split the "can_view_hits" permission into 2 .. with another one added "can_view_names" .. I like people to see the hits, but don't always want some user-groups to see who added the link.

When adding a link .. give admin the ability to change the name the link is being submitted by ..

I'd also like to say .. I love the installer/plug-in .. I love the new "can_access_link" permission and the way it allows guests to see the name but not the link itself (even on the vba module, TOP!) instead of just getting a "Sorry, you are not signed in" page. Nice one :) .. love the style option (but you knew I would ;)) and the new time/date submitted option is super ..

All in all .. very nice indeed :)

Not sure what the point of the "Categories" table being collapsible? You may as well take that off hadn't you?

The idea was that the table isn't collapsible - just the 'Hit Parade' - so that the description would always stay visible. Will check.

Also within this bit, can you put a non breaking space (I think that's what's needed) in between a sub-cats name and the [] bit .. else it breaks if you have a large amount of sub-cats running over more than one line ..

Something within the search isn't quite right .. when I try a search from the drop-down menu the first page comes up ok, but when I click on page 2 (or any of the page numbers I've just seen) it seems to forget what it's meant to be searching for and shows a list of all the links in the database starting from page 1 .. (happens from the search page too) ..

Also, in regards to the search page, it seems to ignore if a link has more than one cat associated with the link .. therefore increasing the amount of "Entries" the search comes back with .. is that by design?

You're right about some of these - I was working on these points yesterday morning (I'm sitting in a hotel in freezing Ottawa, waiting to fly off to sunny Charleston). The SQL gets a bit hairy, particularly to provide some of the features your colleagues have asked for.

On the "My Favourites" page .. if you don't have any favourites it might be worth having a little message saying "You have no favourites at this time, to add a favourite link to this list please click on the +F link next to the link you would like to make a favourite" (or something)

I think a custom message template is always better than vBulletins default error template. Users may see the default error, and often still don't understand why they cannot download the file/link. Further, if they register, as the vB error template suggests, and then still cannot download the file/link, they don't understand why they don't have permission.

Couple of things I've just noticed ..

The "database_name" option in the admin settings .. this works fine within the breadcrumbs for local_links.php but when doing any admin work within local_links_admin.php it goes back to the default name in the breadcrumbs ..

It just doesn't look right .. ;)

Also .. the cat drop-down menu at the bottom of the page is missing on the main search page ..

On the admin settings page .. "monitor_template" has no description .. what does this do and what are the options?

We're testing it out now. Thanks for the no permission error template. It's so much nicer than vB's error template. We now have over 1500 links and everyone wants this option more than anything else (from the wishlist).

+ Provide keyword associations
- perhaps auto-searches linked to user profile.

I'll have to go back and edit all the links but it will be totally worth it. Just remember to allow the link to be associated with any number of choices from a users profile field. I'm willing to test this out if needed.

The thing is, the links and downloads manager installed on my website is solely based on the jukebox.

With bookmarking, I meant bookmarking the streamurl.

For example, when the user clicks on the winamp icon, it opens a new window playing the file. The users can mark that 'window' and go from there directly.

Is there a way to remove the address bar and limit the size of the window so that they cannot scroll.

I know that it can be done with javascript like:

but how would you implement that in the vb template?

Oh AndrewD .. when I was reading the instructions about the jukebox I noticed a couple of mistakes in the instructions.txt file ..

In the Sections key you have "The jukebox" at 4.5 and "Thumbnail images" at 4.6 .. but when you look at the sections they are reversed with "Thumbnail images" at 4.5 and "The jukebox" at 4.6 ..

Also within the Sections key you have "Icons" showing as 3.9 when it should be 3.6 .. and "Mime type" as 3.10 instead if 3.7 ..

Just perform the upgrade - it takes you all the way in one go. Maybe hang in there until I put 2.1.0 as the official release (tomorrow/Saturday), as there are some very minor phrasing/menu pieces to fix in the beta.

You're right, this is how it behaves at the moment. It speeds up the database searches. It needs fixing - I'll put this on the list.

The noscroll, etc, is applied when the window is created from an <a> tag which has an 'onclick' attribute onclick="ldmpopup(this.href);return false;". If you want to extend the behaviour to other windows, then you need to modify the <a> tags to include this attribute.

I think I misunderstood your question. Am I right, you *only* want to have url's that display the 'action=play' link, and you do not want to have any 'action=jump' links? In this case, edit the links_linkbit template (or the links_linkbit_table template, if you use that layout for links). Find the two lines which read

$linktypebit
$linkurljump
and change these to read

$linktypebit
<a href="$LINKS_SCRIPT.php?action=play&id=$linkid" target="player" onclick="ldmpopup(this.href);return false;">$linkname</a>

You are almost certainly using up all the cpu time that your server grants to php scripts. Typically, this is 30 seconds, and is set in your php.ini file. Take a look in the 'instructions.txt' file - section "Speed versus Security and Server Load"

Just noticed something ..

If you send a link to someone via the "Send to a Friend" option, they get the mail and click on the link .. this will open up the My Links page with the one link showing and the description.

If, however, you've got it set so that guests only get to see the wording of the link and not the link itself (option "protected_link" set as 0) the My Links page comes up blank apart from the "No entries match the criteria you entered" dialogue ..

Should this not show the link as they would of seen it browsing the cats (ie the wording and not linked) .. with, perhaps, a "To access this link you need to register" type dialogue beneath it?

Thinking about it .. it would quite nice to have this sort of dialogue at the top of the link lists on every page if "protected_link" is set at 0 ..

Do you have some sort of mod_rewrite function working on your site? The admin link (http://www.propcircle.com/local_links_admin.php) takes me correctly to a "login" page". Links to http://www.propcircle.com/local_links.php?action=xyz are redirecting to pages http://www.propcircle.com/local_links.php with no parameters.

When you logon and then logoff that is when the LINK is correct. How do I fix this? I tried searching but no luck and I really don't want to read all 624 posts.

When you logon and then logoff that is when the LINK is correct. How do I fix this? I tried searching but no luck and I really don't want to read all 624 posts.

You simply need to add the "forums root" directory in front of the filename.

I tried this prior to posting and this didn't exactly work. This produces the correct link when the person is located on the main page using vbadvanced. However going to the main forum produced this link and attempted to go to http://www.tampahdtv.com/tpahd-vb/tpahd-vb/local_links.php. Which of course don't exist.

after a fresh install I found it difficult to figure out how to add a category. The Add category button/option didn't show up under categories ever until I clicked on the forum bit location for ldm. I doesn't show up in administer or moderate, so just a suggestion to help us newbies.. make it so the add category shows up on other pages as well :p

I have this problem...

I would like to hide any new file of a category from the "New Links".

I try to set the hide/unhide button in edit form of the file ... and it works? but the problem is that only the administrators can view the file... simple users can't see this file.

I want to give the authority only in a UserGroup to download these files and the other users just to see the files (not to download).

For Example

Main Category
-->1st Category
--> 1stSubCategory1
--> 1stSubCategory2
--> 1stSubCategory3

-->2nd Category
--> 2ndSubCategory1
--> 2ndSubCategory2
--> 2ndSubCategory3

Now I have 2 groups... the Users and the PowerUsers.

I want to give the permissions to Users and to the PowerUsers to view the list of all the files, but only the PoweUsers can download the files under the category "2nd Category", the "1st Category" can be viewed and downloaded from all the users.

Otherwise, if i add new files under of the category "2nd Category" i don?t want to show it in the "New Links".

I know that?s a difficult problem... but please if someone knows how I can to that please tell me...

Choose (or create) one of your board's forums which has the required permissions - i.e. normal users can't access it but power users can.

For those links that you want to be available only to your power users, 'associate' (via the links creation form or via admin/categories/mass edit) these links with this forum.

If you want all users to see the links even if they can't access them, give them can_see_protected_links_on_portal permission via the LDM admin permissions page.

Any chance of a on/off type setting for the 2 ways of doing it? either shows as new or not.

or .. have an updated timestamp column in the db table, so you can show both when a link was first added and the last time it was updated .. therefore allowing you to have an "updated" flag against a link. You could then have a setting to allow you to show these links as new or not on both the links page, as well as the cpms module.

You could also have a couple of settings to choose which colour to show these flags .. ie .. have the "new" text show as red .. and the "updated" text show as yellow (as an example)

Also, when I tried to scan the directory and choose "select" as option, it show on the description as: trawled during scan of /images/Album/. This show the path of the location and therefore easy to leech. Is there anyway to add those files without any description at all? I don't want to click edit 138 times just to delete that line. Thanks Andrew. Yes - just edit the links_scantext template - by default it reads $file[name] trawled during scan of $file[dir] - you can change it how you want. Note that the template is applied *when* the directory is scanned, not when the linkbit is displayed, so you need to make this change before doing a lot of imports.

I'm not sure what you want, exactly - the jukebox is taking a stream from the server, and the alternative (the regular link mechanism) will launch real player, winamp, etc, with an m3u file.

sorry andrew..... i would like for example a link which when clicked plays in real player winamp etc but is leech protected so people cant right click and save it.... primarily then (because my LDM will be only mp3) i would like to be able to get a user favorites into a single m3u hence making a kinda radio station...

i was hoping to do this with flash hence the request for xml files etc..... but im told by flash gurus that theres not much point because flash would need to at least preload some of the whole playlist... which could take ages with a large playlist

1- You have to set some filetypes via LDM->Admin->Settings->musicbox_filetypes and/or LDM->Admin->Settings->musicbox_filetypes_realplayer. These filetypes must have mimetypes set using the main VB/Admin/Attachments/Extensions and Sizes page (e.g. mp3: Content-type: audio/mpeg)
2- You have to upload the filetype icons that I supply in the release/icon directory, and point LDM->Admin->Settings->file_icons_dir at where you have put those icons
3- You have to authorise some usergroups to use the Jukebox with LDM->Admin->Settings->can_play_musicbox
4- The Jukebox only works on Windows machines. The RealPlayer part has one or two problems with files that are held on someone else's site, e.g. when using cURL rather than allow_url_fopen

When you do all these, the linkbit displays will include an icon just to the left of the main link. When you click that icon, it will launch the embedded jukebox.

If you still have problems, send me a PM with details of your board and an admin account, and I'll take a look.

I just wish that the title link work the same as icon, and there is another link say "download" for clarification's sake. But the majority of people won't need it and it's really a big deal to me. In the future if you consider to add an option in admin that allow to download or not, if no download allowed LDM will be streaming only, it would be great.

One more thing on the download limitation, which you will release in the future.

1. I wonder how it work if I set limit of say, 20 mb a day, and there are 2 files that are 15mb and 15mb, would LDM allow a user to download the first one and not the second one since it's over limit? And what if the user try to open 2 windows at the same time?

I started on this last night, and your suggestions are very helpful.

I'm not programer :), so if LDM doesn't know the size of file until it completed, what would happen? Say File1, 2 and 3 each has 100MB and my limit is set to 150MB, then?

1. User download file1, after complete, he still has 50MB of bandwidth left, so he continue to download file2, in which if he complete, he would be over the limit 50MB, but since LDM doesn't know, he's allowed to download that file2, then on file3 he can't get it because he already got 200MB, am I correct? If so, I can live with that :).

But like I asked before, what if he open all 3 browsers for file1, file 2 and file 3 and download them simutaniously, then he can download all those 3 files since LDM doesn't know the file size yet, this case he over limit a lot more, if my examples are more than 100MB>

After play with LDM for 2 more hours let me quote my own quote and say that this feature is already on the LDM, all I need is to set permission to NOT access link to all group but allow play_music_box. Doing this only the icon is available to play but the title link is not highlight.

But there is a little weird though, there are two download links in the pop-up embeded browser. The first one link to the file and the second one like to site/forums/local_links.php. I'm not sure if Andrew try to say "Home" or what, but I think it's better to remove that download link. Include is the screenshot.

Any chance of a on/off type setting for the 2 ways of doing it? either shows as new or not.

or .. have an updated timestamp column in the db table, so you can show both when a link was first added and the last time it was updated .. therefore allowing you to have an "updated" flag against a link. You could then have a setting to allow you to show these links as new or not on both the links page, as well as the cpms module.

You could also have a couple of settings to choose which colour to show these flags .. ie .. have the "new" text show as red .. and the "updated" text show as yellow (as an example)

Just an idea :)

Slave, I realise that the edited link (and its category) will be highlighted as new if you change the time stamp to 'now' when you edit. I will add a check box next to the time stamp to make it easy to select 'now'

I've wondered about that myself. At the moment, the *default* permission for links and categories is set on the admin page. Perhaps you are right that the default link permissions should be the category's permissions and the default for the category should be as set on the admin page. There are arguments both ways. One complicating factor, for example, is that a link can be a member of more than one category.

Take a look at the links_play template. You need to make several changes - in the javascript width=800,height=500, in the width parameter on the table tag and in the width= and height= tags in the embed and object tags.

You do this with the forum-based permissions system.

Chose (or create) two forums which have the usergroup permissions you want, let's say Forum 1 (Registered and Premium access) and Forum 2 (Premium only)

'Associate' all the links that you want to be available to your premium users only with Forum 2. You set this on the link edit form, or you can 'mass edit' all the links in a category using the Admin/Category page

Ditto 'associate' all the links you want to be available to registered and premium users with Forum 1.

You can set LDM up so that protected links are visible (or not) to other users witht he Admin/Permissions/Can see protected links on portal permissions

I can't seem to get the filetypes to work for uploads. ie..this section doesn't seem to actually do anything for me:

This setting *limits* the types that can be uploaded. An upload is only possible for those types is defined in the VB attachment table, and attributes like maximum size, mimetype, etc, are read from there. Yes - all files that are to be handled as uploads, downloads or through the jukebox have to have types that are in the VB attachment table, because that is where LDM finds the mimetype information.

The Jukebox settings on the LDM admin page control which of these are played either by Windows Media Player or by Real Player.

The text link is simply an instruction to download the file (or jump to another site, if it's a regular url). For an mp3 file (and for most file types), the user's pc will wait until the file is complete before doing anything with it.

As far as I understand (I'm not an expert), to 'stream' mp3s so that the user does not have to wait for the download to complete, you wrap them up in m3u playlists. For example, to stream a file http://yoursite/xxx.mp3, then write a m3u file as follows:

#EXTM3U
http://yoursite/xxx.mp3

You also have to set up the m3u mimetype information in the VB admin/attachments page, and provide an m3u.gif icon in your files_icons_dir directory. The correct mimetype is Content-type: audio/x-mpequrl.

One possible problem with the m3u route is that it reveals the whereabouts of the main mp3. Possibly I could wrap all this up inside LDM, but that will have to take its place in the wish list.

I moved mp3 from musicbox_filetypes_realplayer to musicbox_filetypes, and all the entries in your music and video category seem to work fine - e.g. your uploaded talk show and an mp3 I added from our test site (see AD test mp3) - plus the videos.

Looks like you set the seo_friendly parameter (LDM admin/settings) to 1? If so, you need to configure your apache mod_rewrite accordingly. This is explained in the instructions file.

If you don't need this, I suggest leaving seo_friendly =0

Let me know if you still have problems - am happy to take a look, but will need an admin userid to your board.

No, categories are flagged red when they are new or when something new is put in them (or when something already in them is edited and the datestamp changed)

Not in the current version, unless you edit the file local_resize.php:

Here's a couple of small template suggestions:

1. In the header template, change around the site name with the category name. This is so the category or link name is shown before the site name in the title of the category. vB does it this way.

2. In the advanced search, increase the width and height of the search categories form boxes. Right now the box is too small. I updated this by changing many of the 200px items to 300px, and the multi-category select (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/local_links.php?action=search) number from 6 to 10.

Can you tell us when the next update will be? I'm wondering if I should continue updating my templates.

There's an *allow_html* setting on the LDM admin page. It's turned off by default as allowing html can create security problems.

1. In the header template, change around the site name with the category name. This is so the category or link name is shown before the site name in the title of the category. vB does it this way.

2. In the advanced search, increase the width and height of the search categories form boxes. Right now the box is too small. I updated this by changing many of the 200px items to 300px, and the multi-category select (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/local_links.php?action=search) number from 6 to 10.

Can you tell us when the next update will be? I'm wondering if I should continue updating my templates.

Situation for 2.1.1 is that the following are done completely or in large part:
+ Default permissions for new links taken from parent category if set rather than global default_forumid
+ Daily file download and bandwidth limit settings available
+ Users with can_moderate_link can change username of who submitted an entry
+ Admin pages give more information on invalid parameter settings
+ File uploads retain their name when downloaded
+ Unnecessary links removed from jukebox display
+ 'Update to current time' checkbox added to Edit Link form
+ Adjustable # columns displayed in catlist (cat_cols_display setting)
+ Integration with My Profile:
>- MySearch driven by parameters in Profile
>- Plugin to show user's recent LDM hits in profile

I'm currently working on the My Profile group of changes. I'll try to get these finished this weekend, then upload a beta.

Sorry for not being cleared, I meant the pop-up jukebox player window. I want to remove the jukebox image to make the pop-up window loads faster and add a adsense banner on the top or bottom.
