I know, I'm just pissed at myself for not noticing the $admincpdir right below it.

After installation. The shoutbox works perfect.
But Now when I go to the usergroup manager in my admin CP I get this error

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/xtreme11/public_html/forums/admincp/usergroup.php on line 1361

I've never had this problem untill I installed this hack .
Any help would be appriciated. I looked into line 1361 and did not notice anything funny.

Line 1361 is the last line according to dreamweaver code editor
BTW. If I look at any of the other php files within the admincp folder they all end the same way.

and my problem is same as some others I dont get any names in the admincp as well my shoutbox wont go back ( it works perfect true shoutbox.php)
but when i use the iframe version it looks damaged.

I got it free from I belive geekydesigns. There is no licence needed that I see.

P.S I just did a search from google . It say's on a couple of sites that it's a free program .

Is there a manual installation procedure as all I keep on getting are sql errors, I have manually removed the queries as the installer says there is no installation but then refuses to install because the keys already exist.

This is the only thing preventing me installing this hack and is the only one I have tried to install that uses HIS, I want the option to install this by hand so that I know exactly what is going on and can see if it is me making an error (if I want to make changes it is easier for me to do it manually), also don't like the fact that we do not have the option between HIS and manual install.

Sounds like you didnt hack the file correclty

What changes am I supposed to make to this file (I assume you mean adminfunctions_template.php)? I can't find it in the readme nor in the install file. And I edited forumhome correctly.

If you uploaded all the new files, it should work fine. It is failing on the chdir to the admincp. The variable is defined in hack_config_default.php.

problem is the permissions in admincp dont show up fixed the problem with the shoutbox itself myself. took me a while to find the imagepath.

1. You will need to edit the templates
2. There should be drop down menus on each users name
3. Edit the templates and adjust the size of the iframe :)

I just installed this on a win2003 server running apache and it installed no problems with no errors at all , bar 1 slight user error.

I noticed as i installed i was quite hasty when clicking NEXT maybe you should put tick boxes to make sure people have read what is being done before they can click ?

I also noticed that the README.html never displayed for me while installing and i thought that the hack didnt work - it was only after searching the folders that i found the README.HTML and discovered i had a few templates and files to edit ... after that everything worked perfectly.

Personally , I wanted a list of users online to be displayed in the shoutbox so that people didnt go posting when no-one was online (i know some people dont have this no-one else online issue, but my forum is newish) so i checked the script and added a tiny little code that i think helps a little.

on FORUMHOME template Find :

Did you follow the file edits? There is a point in the install procedure which requires you to click on a link to open the file edit instructions. I nearly clicked through it, without doing the edits.

Yes, I nearly missed that one to, but did not. I made all the edits, specifically to the ../install/vbulletin-style.xml document. I then, through my style manager, re-uploaded that as the default style. Yet, that did not seem to have any affect in getting it to show on the mainpage.

when i replace $phrasegroups = array('holiday');
with
$phrasegroups = array('holiday', 'shoutbox');

the main page got mixed up
all the statistic and etc things are gone and pretty much of the info on the main page is weird...

i have edited everything else and it's ok, but when replace and this....the problem appears...

Actually, apart from that, I can't view it at shoutbox.php because it says I don't have permission, even though the usergroup is set to that, and only the first box appears in the drop down menu of the Admin CP o_O

Is it possible to have a chime sound when a new shout is posted? I have this installed on two BBS's and both user groups want to hear a sound so they know when someone is trying to chat.

I have installed it and everything went good, I get the box on my main page with a field for the shout and then I type in the shout field and click the shout button, it then goes to a new page that opens up blank with nothing on it.

Can anyone help me out with this?

I may have missed this reading the thread, but this is what I found.

If you set the minimum allowed characters to any value, 2+

and you type in 1 single character, the post is refused, but your post count increments.

Has anyone else seen this?

that is because their browser does not support iFrames...I have had the same problem, since I webmaster 4 boards, I had to change the setting on the shoutbox to non-iframe and everyone then was able to see it...

I also suggest trying to have you members, like I have been doing, to upgrade their browsers to the newest version out since its free!

Firefoxs is still the best to use in my opionion...and I too have had the same problem and my members with IE....have them either change browsers or upgrade to the newest version or just disable iFrames from the shoutbox and make it normal and everyone will then see it with no problems...

I notice a couple of people mention that they can't see the shout box in IE when in iframe mode ...

One thing you can check is any popup blockers or personal firewalls ...
I had the issue where I couldnt see it in iframe mode but others could - after posting like mad in here I looked at my firewall settings and it appears that the iframe was being seen as a popup and was being blocked.
Suggest disable any popup blockers and have them check again - it worked for me.

I had yours installed, I installed vbadvanced cmps. I un-installed yours and attempted to reinstall it, get the above errors.

I know we have to edit templates, but what do we edit? The new installer didn't tell me what templated to edit...

Installed, no issues what so ever.
The only complaint i can make is i want to make a sub usergroup that has access to the shoutbox, but can't post. (IE they are a registered member, but i also add them to the 'Banned From Shoutbox'). When i try this, they still have access because i guess registered users have access. Only when i make it their main usergroup does it work.

Otherwise, great hack. Thank you for sharing.

For those of you who are getting a 'denied by usergroup' error. Make sure your usergroup has access. If you don't see the shoutbox options in your usergroup then make sure when you installed the hack that you did the LAST STEP.

hey guys, I've used this Shoutbox on a number of other sites, and wanted to use it on my own, but I'm getting a couple of Parse Errors. I did read most of the thread here, but I didn't see anything that related to the errors I'm getting.

Same deal here with first error, after comparing it with the original file, those lines appear exactly as they should be. And no, I didn't use Dreamweaver for the file edits, I used UEdit. Gonna go back and try again with Notepad :ermm:

You have to add the last file edit to the Forumhome template. At least I'm assuming so, your homepage link takes me right back to vb.org :ermm:

We tried and and did not like the templates at all. The smiles mess up the layout and the java to TX the smile code the the input box don't work.

Got this installed and working and formatted rather well on our second attempt. Just took some editing for our style.

We are however having a problem with posting to the shout box. When we post the redirect does not work, it goes to a server message that the page has moved and you have to click a link. It does redirect on posting an edited shout though.

All of the other redirects work fine.

Any hints?

I figured ya moved on. I got parts worked out but need a hand. Specifically the input box controls on the main shoutbox.php page not working, but working on any other posting page.

I figured the work was worth improving on amoung those of us that want to use the code.

also - to all the people who are getting errors etc and are perhaps a little inexperienced with adding hacks. Id strongly reccomend backing up your database and files before adding a major hack like this. Also, make a test forum and apply the hack to that forum first before applying it to a live forum. Ill admit its a pain doing this but better safe than sorry :):)

p.s. members should be nicer to the hack authors - a lot of work clearly went into this hack with the installer etc :)

If you take a look at the shoutbox with IE, it shows the color of the background (which is white). This theme is not the primary theme as set in the vB Admin panel.

I had similar errors. If you are not using the default admincp path, you need to change $admincpdir = "admincp"; in the hack_default_config.php file. Worked for me.

Let me look, I don't remember. I know I had issues, just don't remember what I did!

EDIT: it appears that all I did was the ACP settings and the standard PHP supplied by the author for index.php.

They aint notes per se'. It's the edits in the old files, not the actual descriptions of where to insert and edit. Since I can't post complete vB files that would not work.

Ok Ok already. I recreated the notes for you guys. This is not official but it's what I have and use.

Huh... after my vB 3.0.4 update, the shoutbox is blank... and I found out that all the shoutbox templates disappeared. So I dug around and found the templates in the installer and then I manually created the templates. Actually, once I put the 'SHOUTBOX' template in a couple of styles, the other shoutbox templates that disappeared came back (but there were a couple of other styles I had to manually add the templates back up again).

Now I can shout again from the homepage... BUT if I click and go into shoutbox.php... it gives me this crap:

Now, go to Add Module Under vBa CMPS, and enter this info:

Module Title: Shoutbox - Thats what I used, You can use anything
Module Identifier: Leave Blank
File to Include: None
OR Template to Include: shout - Same as the template but w/o "adv_portal"
Active: Yes
Column: Center Column
Display Order: Where ever you want it
Templates Used: Leave Blank

You may or may not have to go to Edit Page and Click on the page and make sure the shout box is checked.

Huh... after my vB 3.0.4 update, the shoutbox is blank... and I found out that all the shoutbox templates disappeared. So I dug around and found the templates in the installer and then I manually created the templates. Actually, once I put the 'SHOUTBOX' template in a couple of styles, the other shoutbox templates that disappeared came back (but there were a couple of other styles I had to manually add the templates back up again).

Now I can shout again from the homepage... BUT if I click and go into shoutbox.php... it gives me this crap:

I've already made the necessary file changes since the upgrade.

Any ideas?


We had to run the installer after upgrading to to 3.0.3 and 3.0.4 and then everything worked fine. Oddly enough my template edits remained intact. But, hey, it works! :)

Well the only way I know of atm is to go into phpmyadmin and then to the shoutbox_posts table and start deleting. At least you can set how many you want to delete at a time. I deleted 4000 shouts yesterday.

Find post #373 in this thread and do the file edits in the text file that is attached there and that will take care of your problem. I had the same problem and this fixed it for me.

same thing worked for me, doing the override. i just need to fix the shout icon. just noticed that on lovely micro++++ (at work currently) that it doesn't show up. but of course it works on Mac (at home), cause safari is much better than anything else, also need to fix the "last 20 shouts" link

I've had a quick look round in this thread, but can't really find an answer to my problem.
I'm having trouble displaying my shoutbox on the forum index page.
I have copied the code exactly as it is in the installed and have tried reinstalling the shoutbox too.
It is set to enabled in the shoutbox settings, I have even tried reverting my forumhome template to the original, but still no luck.
Can anyone shed any light on the problem?

Did you edit the correct forum template? It should be the FORUMHOME template and did you make sure you copied "all" the code from the installer to the FORUMHOME template correctly? Check these things again. :)

Great hack! Since upgrading to v3.0.5 I've changed from using BVShoutbox to this one, except I'm wondering has anyone figured out a reason/fix for the refresh bug? I'm getting the same issue where it refreshes the whole page when you submit a shout, but the auto-refresh works fine. I have members using Firefox and IE, and on different Windows versions all having the same problem, so it might be a coding issue. Anyone?

after upgrading to 3.05 and reinstalling the hack I recieved a problem with the init.php code we have to add. If I add the code the package tells us to, I get a error on line 920 with a already writing header to cookie. But when I reload the original init.php file the shoutbox works but all users can see ip address and ect...

Now, go to Add Module Under vBa CMPS, and enter this info:

Module Title: Shoutbox - Thats what I used, You can use anything
Module Identifier: Leave Blank
File to Include: None
OR Template to Include: shout - Same as the template but w/o "adv_portal"
Active: Yes
Column: Center Column
Display Order: Where ever you want it
Templates Used: Leave Blank

You may or may not have to go to Edit Page and Click on the page and make sure the shout box is checked.

Great hack! Since upgrading to v3.0.5 I've changed from using BVShoutbox to this one, except I'm wondering has anyone figured out a reason/fix for the refresh bug? I'm getting the same issue where it refreshes the whole page when you submit a shout, but the auto-refresh works fine. I have members using Firefox and IE, and on different Windows versions all having the same problem, so it might be a coding issue. Anyone?

I had this running fine earlier and I tried to get it to run on a a new style but it wouldn't. I tried to just reinstall it which ended up in me not being able to use the shoutbox in my original style either. I mean I could see everything fine in shoutbox.php but not on the index. So, I tried removing everything and redid everything (I think) but it's even worse now. Now, the empty box doesn't even show up on the index at all.

I'm trying to uninstall this now but I can't seem to get the uninstall script to run. It tells me "There is no record of being installed. It cannot be uninstalled." I'm looking at my database and clearly see that there are in fact many records. How can I fix this?

If you set this to option #1, then users <b>can</b> edit other users with the same hierarchy rank (default). If you set it to option #2, then users <b>can not</b> edit users with the same hierarchy rank.

Show an Input Box/Textarea on Forumhome?

With this option, you can show a textarea or an input box on forumhome allowing users to shout without going to into the shoutbox first.

here's an odd bug, not sure if it has been reported: you can't start a shout with a non-alpha character or it takes you to the shoutbox.php page
Nothing to make me click uninstall, etc., but it is just odd

Also- something weird I discovered: go to the page that has the shout box and change the ? after the .php to a / (ie: index.php? to index.php/) and check out the shoutbox. then scroll up and down a few times in the shoutbox area with your scrolling mouse... pretty wacky. Again - not a bug with the shoutbox of course since the php code is incorrect for the URL, but I just thought it was cool to see and thought others might like to check it out.

Well the only way I know of atm is to go into phpmyadmin and then to the shoutbox_posts table and start deleting. At least you can set how many you want to delete at a time. I deleted 4000 shouts yesterday.

OK, thanks...thats a start....Hope someone have include this in the AdminCp, it makes scense to have this option and to use it so you don't have a whole lot of unwanted shouts just taking up space..

I'm getting the white screen of death after upgrading to 3.06, whenever I click on "shout", which calls to shoutbox.php. I've reinstalled, and saved the templates again. All my file edits are still there. The shouts get installed, and are viewed, once you click "back" on your browser. Anyone have any idea why this is only partially working????

I think Netscape is capable of iframes. Netscape still keeps up-to-date with such HTML code like iframes. AFAIK anyways, I don't see why they don't.

I've spent hours trying to get the advanced editor and wysiwyg editors to work in IE and FF, no luck. I got everything working but FF so far. Like you, my editors else where on the site work fine.

I even have this working in the new, yet to be released, version of vbgarage in all modes in both IE and FF, but no joy here. Go figure.

If I get it working, I'll try to share my findings, but at this point, I've long lost track of my changes.

I fixed it for us. I found a few things that got me closer and closer as we went along. The final fix was to do an edit in the SHOUTBOX template.

There are two forms in that template, both have the name=vbform. By changing the name of the one, everything seemed to work in FF. Other things I can't recall got it working in IE, but I think this one is a biggie and should do it.


In the SHOUTBOX template find...

This is not my hack, I'm just sharing some ideas. Your milage may vary.

Is there suppose to be a file called shout.php in the admincp dir?

trying to get my options avaliable in the admin cp and added the code above.
I now have the option avaliable but when i click it i get page cannot be disaplayed.

its point to shout.php?do=modify

as the above code tells it to.
construct_nav_option('Shout Manager', 'shout.php?do=modify', '|');

But i dont have a shout.php nor is there one in the zip???

any ideas?

Are you using the enhanced editor or the full blown WYSIWYG editor?

Im a n00b...not sure what you mean here... when i go into the main part of the shoutbox....where it lists stats and all that stuff....the editor now works in there. hope that helps

Does the CREATE TABLE statement have to be changed to work with 4.1.8 ?

That'd be my question too.
Have the version installed on 3.0.6 ... yet I still dont see the option to mass prune and auto-update the shout-count of users. It'd be nice to have that count according to the shouts that actually exist.

I gave the cron job posted somewhere in this thread a try, but that does not update the count either. Anyone ever attempted a solution for this and would like to share? :D

i installed the hack, and everything seems to be working fine except my usergroup.php page...i keep getting this error in the admin cp

All I can think of (not being able to see it) is that you messed up one of those 2 code changes. I'd look to see that didn't forget a } or have one to many. I took a fresh usergroup file and added the shout code to it and line 1360 has nothing to do with the shoutbox, So I'm assuming you have more then just this installed.

If you want I can look at it for you and see if I can figure it out. If So PM me.
