vBSEO Search Engine XML Sitemap 3.0
We are extremely pleased to inform the vBulletin.org community that a fully revamped version of the vBSEO Search Engine XML Sitemap (previously "vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator" (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=206169)) v.3.0, is being released to all licensed vBulletin users effective immediately!
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
Note: The NEW vBSEO Search Engine XML Sitemap 3.0 replaces all previous versions of the "vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator", and includes support for all the new URL types in vBulletin 4.x.
New in the vBSEO Search Engine XML Sitemap v.3.0
The new sitemap alters the way data is structured in fundamental ways. Sitemap 3.0 segments different content areas into separate files, so you end up with a unique set of files per content type: forums, blogs, cms, groups, albums, members, tags, etc. In addition, the new sitemap has an extended priority feature that utilizes the built in 'weight' tool of the vBulletin XML sitemap generator for individual forums, CMS sections and articles to act as a multiplier.
We believe these changes are responsible for delivering increased returns for a number of forums from customers and testers we've been tracking. Please track your own progress via your Google Webmaster tools account, Google Analytics or Gravity Insights (http://www.vbseo.com/en/gravity-insights/).
A Clean and Beautiful Interface
The new sitemap also features a clean and beautiful interface, built from the ground up. We believe it reflects the quality, precision and attention to detail placed into each aspect of this release. We are passionate about building software, and great software is beautiful inside, and out.

The addon generator modules are for just that-- add ons. The sitemap allows you to include urls from other products, like vba (vBAdvanced). Top include them in the sitemap generator process, you add the function to the addons section. This also allows you to custom code any other pages/scripts you may have, or add them to the extraurls.txt file.

vBulletin built in sitemap generator doesn't cover all possible content areas like this one. Additionally vBSEO Search Engine XML Sitemap allows you to add your third party modifications to your sitemap files and have better algorithm calculations for your important contents.

You shouldn't change that .htaccess file. It prevents another people or scrips get access to your data folder.
As I said, the issue is related to Apache mod_security module. If you are a technical user, you may change their rules to avoid conflicting with your sitemaps.
Please keep in mind that the URL access to your sitemaps is related to your forum URL, you shouldn't go to 'data/' folder, it means that you will access to your sitemaps through this URL:

Why product's files are being marked as "File does not contain expected contents"?
This is normal. There is no xml file shipped with this version to fill this in. You can simply ignore it.
I'm a reseller, so can't i change it, i also forgot to add that, in data, .htaccess it says "deny from all" should i change it?
No, leave that as is or you will open your server to potential rouge scripts running.
You should NOT access the files directly.
Make sure you read the directions, specifically around the htaccess rule you need to add.
Then, you can access your sitemap by .com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz

Hello,
What's the database error details ? You can view the database error details from page source
Can i get a sitemap to upload to google web tools ??
That's the URL of your sitemap
http://www.sitename.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Change sitename.com/ with your forum URL
So you should add this URL to your google webmaster account :
sitemap_index.xml.gz
Also you can found your sitemap URL in vbseo sitemap generator reports panel "www.sitename.com/vbseo_sitemap/"
At the top right of the page.
If I download this should I not use the sitemap that comes with VB4? Which one is better?

I have been testing this and observed that this error also happens when ? or ' are used in a thread title on vb4 forums that are not using vbseo to rewrite their thread titles. My forums using vbseo have not had this problem because vbseo has already removed those characters from thread titles.
I like the mod but it's a little cumbersome to have to edit common punctuation from thread titles to get it to work if that is the way it will be released to non vbseo users.

The htaccess file is in place, and the server has apache, and the server does support mod_rewrite.

this table does not exist in vb4. Please make sure you've imported the product file with overwrite.
If that does not work, you can disable user albums from running in your task.
I had to disable the albums, is this a bug with the plugin? Why is it looking for a table that doesn't exist?

you can do this in vboptions. but it's the htaccess ruleset that will matter, not if its on or off.

Ok so i typed up my vBSEO Sitemap settings to notepad to here, it took very long but i just want a working sitemap for my other forum the default vBulletin sitemap did not work so I'm hoping this works, please note my forum was backed up from a different account with a different domain, but still on the same servers. Also i have another forum, www.solohost.org/forum and that vBulletin default sitemap worked on Google. So I'm assuming its something to do with the forum both forums are running on the same server. I told the vBulletin community forums but they can't help at all, and I heard they fixed it with the release of vBulletin 4.0.8 but no Jasper from vBulletin also admitted there is a bug there. If does not work I will have to go tell vBulletin on how to fix the vBulletin sitemap issue.

I am also having the same issue as Jigsaw. I have the directory chmod at 777, the .htaccess file has the rule at the top of the file, my host supports apache mod_rewrite, I have the option vbseo installed set to no, and I have generated the sitemap and when I go to the links it provides for the sitemaps it says 404 Not Found, submitted them to google and get the same from google. What is missing in this equation? Do I not have something right?

finally i find solution for this problem :D
if you moving your config.php away you need edit index.php in vbseo_sitemap folder
Open index.php and find :
include getcwd().'/includes/config.'.VBSEO_PHP_EXT;
replace with this
require '/YourNewPath/config.'.VBSEO_PHP_EXT;
I am also having the same issue as Jigsaw. Technically, no.. assuming you have followed the instructions and uploaded the .htaccess file that redirects to them, and that your server supports mod_rewrite redirects - they 'appear' to be in the root.

I did follow the instructions correctly the .htaccess file was uploaded and my server supports mod_rewrite, but still nothing seems to work the way it should.
Update:
I figured it out! Not sure why this worked, but I put the full url in the rewrite rule. So now it looks like this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ http://www.MYSITE.com/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
After doing that I was able to access and submit the sitemaps to google and google was able to accept them through these urls:

I like the mod but it's a little cumbersome to have to edit common punctuation from thread titles to get it to work if that is the way it will be released to non vbseo users.
I'll flag your issue to our developers for further investigation.

RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ http://www.MYSITE.com/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
This seems working. Now I have to wait until the Google Webmaster Tools are telling me their meaning.

Hello,
Please make sure that 'data/' folder has set permissions to 777. Also please be sure that you have the following structure in your .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
Perhaps you are missing the 'RewriteEngine On' line.
As both Brian and me stated above, this is for security purposes. Nobody needs to access to that URL via web browser.
Make sure you are sending the correct sitemap index URL. Also you may want to be interested on reading this:

All done, but still the same thing, i edited the .htaccess in the data folder and set the folder to 777, should i also recurse in sub directories too?, I uploaded everything the htaccess folder into root, includes and vbseo_sitemap folder, everything is working fine, apart from the sitemap links showing me a 404 error.

I'm not sure if i included this but i did add the .htaccess folder in forum foot, the htaccess file which is in the data folder still remains, as it was like that once i downloaded, it. It said deny from all but one of the vBSEO staff told me to change it so i did but still nothing, the htaccess file is still located in data, and the htaccess folder is still in forum root (Unedited).

The vB default sitemap does not include all areas. This one does. You should NOT run both.
Pick which ever works for you and your site.

you don't. It's designed to be run once a day, per the task.
You can run it multiple times a day by altering the scheduled task, but this is not recommended and un-necessary. Bots will still crawl your site and find new links. This just helps gets the deep linked pages (like, page 6 that doesn't have a link from the thread start on a 10 page thread) noticed and followed.
Remember, the sitemap is only a guideline of urls to visit. It is not a be-all "bots will only visit" list.

I get a sitemap error that looks something like this:

Hello,
that is not coming from vbseo.
that's an IIS issue of folder protection or some other mod_xxxxx filter on your webserver for trying to LOAD the file. check that it has the proper 'chmod for windows' (whatever it is.. i'm not a server guy, especially windows) on the folder.
You should see a simple webpage login prompt, as per

Hello,
What's the database error details ? You can view the database error details from page source
That's the URL of your sitemap
http://www.sitename.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Change sitename.com/ with your forum URL
So you should add this URL to your google webmaster account :
sitemap_index.xml.gz
Also you can found your sitemap URL in vbseo sitemap generator reports panel "www.sitename.com/vbseo_sitemap/"
At the top right of the page.

nginx doesn't support .htaccess... that is an apache directive. You need to find the nginx file in the htaccess folder and add it into your nginx config file on your server.
Further, this file should NOT be 777. i don't know why people keep doing this. Only the /DATA and hits/ folder needs to be 777.

The data writes to the vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder.
The htaccess file directs the link to load that location.
calling sitemap_index.xml.gz actually calls vbseo_sitemap/data/getsitemap.php?sitemap=index.xml.gz by way of the htaccess file.
Google wants your urls to reflect the folder it is in. So, unless you want to make your whole public html area writable (a stupid and horrible idea), using mod_rewrite is the way to do it.

Thank you for reporting. We will upload a new package with that minor fix shortly.
This should take you to
/admincp/sitemap.php

Any idea on when this small and simple fix will be released (for those of us who may not know how to patch that manually)?

11-24-2010, 03:08 AM
it's not necessary to run. Just click on the left frame and navigate to /admincp/sitemap.php manually if you even bother to use that extended priority feature on vb4.
".php" is missing from the link, thats all. We are NOT posting a new release just for that minor error.

you should submit site.com/forumpath/sitemap_index.xml.gz

If your server is slow, you may want to reduce the number of urls per file. I recommend 10-20,000 depending on your server's capabilities. google has a very short timeout.... about 2-4 seconds. if it takes your server longer than this to generate the request, it will mark it as a 404. Lowering the urls per file reduces the file size and increases the download speed.

the nginx ruleset is:
location /forums/ {
rewrite ^/forums/((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ /forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 last;
}
you will need to customize to your actual paths.

Installed and works fine.
only issue is with CMS Stemap.
All links are like /cron.php?6-Example
If i click the link it does not work, if i change "cron.php" to "content.php" the link works.
Any hint why the sitemap creates cron.php links ?
Thanks and br

Hi, why ALL my .xml.gz files have same error code (with different link):
XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: http://www.xxx.it/forum/sitemap_forum_7.xml.gz
Line Number 34888, Column 77: <loc>http://www.xxx.it/forum/threads/16488-Topic-\uffff-1-battery</loc>

In my forum, I have more accent words in topic name.
I have to remove Mod Rewrite Friendly URLs, and use Standard URLs for correct sitemap?

you should submit yoursite.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz
the data physically writes to vbseo_sitemap/data/

the script isn't finishing because of these errors.
you will need to increase your max execution time, or remove some sections from the sitemap so that it completes faster.
regarding the special characters in urls, this is a known issue that likely will not be addressed. It works perfectly with the core vbseo product installed, but alone the sitemap cannot change your vb-generated forum urls.

Assuming an apache DSO instance of php,
the data FOLDER should be 777. The items contained with it should be 644.
If you're on fast cg, etc, your items may be marked differently, perhaps 640. Consult your host for more info on proper security settings for files.
do not upload the htaccess FOLDER.
upload the .htaccess FILE in the htacces FOLDER to your site root, as outlined in the instructions.
There are 10 different webserver rewrite modules in the folder.... if you're on apache, you need to .htaccess one
Check that your vboptions -> vbseo sitemap options -> Sitemap Files url is left BLANK.
99.99% of the time, this should be left blank.
done
Please try re-FTP'ing all files again and re-import the product with over-write

If you're having include errors, odds are something is uploaded to the wrong place or you've set a custom doc root or base tag somewhere else that is causing a conflict.

Showpost effectively doesn't exist for vb4. if you're using vb4, you can ignore that.
Do you have PUBLIC blog entries that have tags?

I've noticed my ASK pings have failed recently as well.
It seems to be an issue on their end.

No, it's not a "human readable" sitemap.
Google will find it just fine if you set up your webmaster account and have the sitemap submit correctly.

vBSEO is made by Crawlability, Inc, Not IB/INET/Jelsoft/vbuleltin solutions/whatever it's name is today.
vBSEO has it's own costs and own licenses as an add-on product.
The sitemap is an additional product offered free of charge to not only vBSEO customers but for all vB owners.
You should head over to http://www.vbseo.com if you have any further vbseo-related questions.

Hi,
what's the difference between "run generator" from the sitemap reports and the cron job task? Some days ago the cron job stopped working properly, it only does 2 complete sitemap files, starts another one and stops. But if I manually start the process with the "run generator" link all the sitemaps are generated correctly. Is there a priority difference between the two? If so how do I change the cron job priority?
Thanks.
