The ultimate goal is to help you achieve more web traffic for your forum.

R-D, Bacteria1,

there was an issue fixed when some URLs not visible to guests where included in sitemap. There is no sense in including them though since SE bots are unable to access them.

voter,

you should run it from vbseo_sitemap/ interface instead of scheduled tasks manager.

Philosopher,

make sure that you have setup permissions correctly.

hugh_,

don't you have any of those URLs listed in sitemap?

Is it correct?
If not, where can i change this?

And second question:
In Scheduled Tasks Manager, what i have set in Product place? vBulletin or vBSEO :: Sitemap generator.

PS.
I have .htaccess in my domain root, its from joomla. I have also uploaded the .htaccess form this modyfication package into the domain_root/forum/ directory.

LoRdGd,

did you create sitemap in vbseo_sitemap/ interface?
I don`t know what you mean ;-)
I have folder root/forum/vbseo_sitemap/data/ with chmod 777 in my server.
Inside this i have lot of logs, and 6 .gz files.
http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/1038/66028058fx4.th.jpg (http://img55.imageshack.us/my.php?image=66028058fx4.jpg)
I can download this file after i have set the link here:
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/3851/scr47a8fc6ri5.th.png (http://img134.imageshack.us/my.php?image=scr47a8fc6ri5.png)
But, when i trying to see my sitemap using a link http://www.arachnea.org/forum/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1
It says there is no sitemap :(
I have`nt sitemap_index.xml in my forum root, only sitemap_index.xml.gz in forum/vbseo_sitemap/data/

I have runned sitemap generator many times, afret few seconds it says "Sitemap has been created. Click here to return [4,190.3Kb mem used] [42s (+5s)]"
But i cant find it :/

Maybe i understand something wrong and everything is OK? :)

the files are stored in data/ folder only, you should create .htaccess file as described to be able to access them via forums root. That's not related to vB admincp options.

Philosopher,

make sure that you have setup permissions correctly.

Oleg, I have setup the permissions of forum-root/vbseo_sitemap/data/ to 777. Problems remain. What should I do else to to solve the problem?:)

I have an .htaccess file in my forum root set to this:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^(www\.|$) [NC]
RewriteRule ^ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

Do I just add the coding to make it look like this:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^(www\.|$) [NC]
RewriteRule ^ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

Thank you for finally releasing this mod! It's working very nicely. I initially received the following error:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 41943040 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 111813495 bytes) in /home/hidden/local/home/hidden/hidden.com/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap_functions.php on line 1298

The script wanted to use around 109MB. I changed the php settings to 120M and now it's working fine.

what exactly is the problem you get?

I'm guessing I'm using the wrong name to call the downloadsii addon because it's not generating a map for those URLs...

Thanks.

LoRdGd,

the files are stored in data/ folder only, you should create .htaccess file as described to be able to access them via forums root. That's not related to vB admincp options.

Okay, but how can i make it? I have .thaccess file in my forum root, but probably it`s not working correctly.

EDIT:
I have added /forum/ into url in .htaccess file.
Now everything looks okay.
Can you confirm this? :)

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded

I changed the php "settings max_execution_time" to 60 and now it's working fine

Including the file name triggers the addon but I get a database error. I'll forward the exact error when I can get hold of it. Is this a mysql user permissions issue?

fluentdesigns,

are you running vBSEO product on your forum?

Goomzee,

the installation instructions are included in the package file. Optional "extra-urls.txt" file can be used in case if you want to include other URLs in sitemap.

Philosopher,

if you have any files inside data/ folder, you might need to change the permissions for them to 0666.

fattony69,

that's correct.

hugh_,

that should not be a permissions case. What exactly is the db error message? (it's included in html source of db error page)

try to reupload sitemap generator files, looks like you have an older version.

yes, they are automatically excluded.

try to submit sitemap_1.xml.gz manually to Google, or give it a few days to get other sitemap files.

umm okey i'll check the email when it comes next time

Edited : i thought about it, ping in the index sitemap link wont really make a diffrence because Live.com dosnt accept the sitemap unless its in the root (public_html)
(My understanding of ping in the details is sending to the search engine the sitemap link)

In our forum at www.unix.com/forum_index.php forum 2 is the "Dummies" forum with over 14, 000 threads.

However, the logfile of the sitemap generating process says:

[homepage] [2,525.5Kb mem used] [0s (+0s)]
[SECTION START] forumdisplay [2,525.7Kb mem used] [0s (+0s)]
[forumdisplay] forum_id: 2, total threads: 335, pages: 9 [2,526.3Kb mem used] [0s (+0s)]

(blah blah....)

Why does the forum have so many threads but the sitemap generator says there are 355 threads??

try to simply replace "dl_cats" with "file_cats" and "dl_files" with "file_files".

Chris04S,

.htaccess should be created in forums folder.

chevy01xtreme,

leave it at 0777.

imported_silkroad,

you have "Default View Age" option set to "Last month", so older threads are cut out: http://www.unix.com/unix-dummies-questions-answers/index9.html I'd recommend to disable this option to show ALL thread for better exposure to search engines.

Nice mod *INSTALLED*
Had a little problem setting this up, but found the solution.

Got the 404 error when trying to access the sitemap, so found the problem was the .htaccess file.
This was being ignored by apache because in the httpd.conf the AllowOverrides None option was set.
A bit of googling shows that apache doesn't seem to like .htaccess files much, unless you REALLY want to use them. So, I moves the .htaccess file to /etc/httpd/conf.d/vbseo_sitemap.conf
Apache likes it now and just includes it with all the other configs.

Not much use if you're on some sort of limited access webserver, but having full control over my server this seemed the better option.

TsirhCitna,

your sitemap looks ok for me: http://www.tenstones.net/forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz

len backus,

those are vBSEO files on your screenshot, not vBSEO Sitemap Generator.

Jonaid,

don't you have sitemap files in data/ folder?

Greek76,

you only need that if you have DownloadsII (vBulleting mod) installed.

Jonaid,

you should create .htaccess folder as described in installation instructions, no need to move files.

cykelmyggen,

what is your sitemap URL?

Nice that there is a new release. Pity tho that the downloads.php is still not fixed.
I had to fix it manually again.

But still thanks for this new release, I clicked *installed*.:)

chevy01xtreme,

yes, you should keep data/ folder with 0777 permissions. There is an .htaccess file in that folder that prevents opening files directly from it.

hugh_,

you can setup log pruning in vbseo_sitemap_config.php file: define('VBSEO_SM_PRUNE', 0); // logs age in days to prune

sundarmobiles,

do you have vBSEO product installed (it is required).

cykelmyggen,

you should remove the second one.

the page I linked above describes exact steps how to change that.

i did what you told me to do

http://www.gulf-heart.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz

open the file and you will see:

<sitemap>
<loc>http://www.gulf-heart.com/vb/sitemap_1.xml.gz</loc>
<lastmod>2008-06-01T02:01:25+00:00</lastmod>
</sitemap>
...etc

the sitemap should be
http://www.gulf-heart.com/sitemap_1.xml.gz
so live.com will accept it

Have you done this:
http://www.vbseo.com/wiki/Sitemap:FAQ#How_To_Move_Sitemap_To_Domain_Root2. Define "Sitemap Files URL" option in vBSEO Sitemap Generator configuration to: "http://www.yourdomain.com"
3. Open vbseo_sitemap/ interface in browser and re-generate the sitemap.

I never had any problems with version 2.1 but am having issues with 2.2. I've tried reinstalling several times. If I run the sitemap generator it will sometimes run fine once. After that though, most times when I start it will run for 1-2 seconds and output just this and stop:

[SECTION START] tags [5,595.8Kb mem used] [3,081s (+213s)]
[create sitemap file] filename: sitemap_107.xml.gz, number of urls: 36 [5,611.6Kb mem used] [3,081s (+0s)]
[create sitemap in text format] part #108 [5,611.6Kb mem used] [3,081s (+0s)]
[create sitemap index] filename: sitemap_index.xml.gz, number of sitemaps: 107 [5,659.4Kb mem used] [3,081s (+0s)]
There are no reports generated after this and no submissions to search engines that I can tell. So what is happening here? Is it just generating the .gz's that had changes in the since the last time it was run? Shouldn't that at least show up in the reports?

imported_silkroad,

you have "Default View Age" option set to "Last month", so older threads are cut out: http://www.unix.com/unix-dummies-questions-answers/index9.html I'd recommend to disable this option to show ALL thread for better exposure to search engines.
I noticed the same thing - I had a number of forums set at "show threads from last month". Does this mean that Google hasn't been crawling through some of the more ancient threads I have at my site? I've changed all forums to "show all threads" btw.

Another question - more important: I don't have a site map for the root domain that my forum is located - which includes a few thousand pages. Could this plugin work for those as well, or does it only work with vBulletin/vBseo? If so, what would I need to do to include the static pages on the root URL? Would I simply change the "Sitemap Files URL" to the root domain in the admin section? Or do I need to generate a separate sitemap using other software for that?

Last question - pretty lame question but one nonetheless. What URL do I submit to yahoo? Would it be the forum's root url, or the URL that includes the gz file that is reported to Google?
http://www.mydomain.com/myforum/sitemap_index.xml.gz

Thanks!

Could this plugin work for those as well, or does it only work with vBulletin/vBseo?This mod creates sitemap for vBulletin URLs only. You will have to create a separate sitemap for other pages on your site.
Would it be the forum's root url, or the URL that includes the gz file that is reported to Google?
http://www.mydomain.com/myforum/sitemap_index.xml.gzCorrect.

Pf?hler,

EDIT: Hmm someone didn't tell us the data directory had to be chmod to 777.It doesn't always have to be. Mine is 644 and the installation worked perfectly following the directions in the docs folder exactly. It just depends on your server configuration or web host how permissions on directories that are going to be writable by the web server must be set.

Just thought I'd share...my problem was resolved with the help of Oleg at vBSEO. I ended up just filing a problem ticket with them on their site since I own a license to vBSEO. It was resolved very quickly.

Problem:
Had no problems with previous vBSEO Sitemap Generator plugins but this version hadn't completed successfully for me even once since I had installed it. Never got an email that it was finished. Never saw it show up in the reports list. When I genned it manually it would look like it was completing successfully but never quite finished. Any further manual gens would run for a couple of seconds then stop.

Solution:
Set the "Generate Yahoo-Compatible Text Sitemap" setting to NO. It generated the sitemap just fine afterwards and I got my first completed sitemap, email, and report since I installed this version of the mod. Apparently Yahoo no longer even needs that type of sitemap anymore anyway so you're not even losing anything by disabling it.

Ohiosweetheart,

vBSEO Sitemap Generator uses built-in PHP mail() function, possibly your host doesn't allow that.

Dave-Initial,

check that your host supports mod_rewrite (http://www.vbseo.com/f77/how-check-if-mod_rewrite-working-my-site-21502/).

Froggy32701,

try to disable text sitemap, remove all files from data folder and regenerate sitemap.

Having a closed forum means bots can't see it. Having a sitemap, or expecting search traffic, is simply not going to happen.

There is a patch in this thread:
http://www.vbseo.com/f44/google-sitemap-have-same-priority-24325/

However, a google rep even chimed in and stated that the 'error' is more of a 'warning' to notify you, the owner, of the issue. Google will still accept it and use it.

I get a error404 only inconnection with the Tags rewrites. Any ideas?

The sitemap generator doesn't support re-writes from 3rd party.... only stock vb urls or vbseo plugin config will be used. If you use vbseo, there is a flag in the options for telling the sitemap generator that you have vbseo installed.

No idea. Probably has to do with (not using) SEO. Google likes to see words in links not just showthreadphp?=xxxx.

Google has reportedly indexed a little over 100 threads from my sitemap (these stats are contained in webmaster tools), but it has indexed hundreds of other pages on its own (based on http://www.google.com/search?q=site:[MY SITE URL HERE]). So I'm not sure how hit-or-miss this sitemap method is. I'm getting more traffic from Yahoo and Live bots though so at least that's a good thing.

Just recently installed vbSEO 3.2 Gold and the vBSEO Sitemap generator 2.2 and I have a few problems:

1. Sitemap generator isn't working, throws database error (table vb_linkback does not exist)

This is on PHP 5.2 using MySQL 5.0.24a with the MySQLi connector

2. vbSEO seems to be working but it's trying to rewrite my css file urls and breaking my template.

Specifically this css file:
http://forums.gamer-junkie.com/annou...82b2-00001.css

Should be:
http://forums.gamer-junkie.com/clien...82b2-00001.css

Just wanted to post a reply here as a follow up. I was able to get help over on the vbseo forums and it turns out that my vbseo install was corrupted.

After a re-install of vbseo everything is working (sitemap generator AND url rewrites).

if you are in /forums,
your sitemap will be

yourdomain.com/forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz

if you aren't in /forums
then
yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz

has it been run yet? if you just installed it, you will either
1) wait until the cron runs (usually 3am)
2) run it manually from the /vbseo_sitemap/ portal

Which would be better? A Sitemap or nice clean SEO URLS?

Nice work - as must be expected from you.

Installed, of course.

Which would be better? A Sitemap or nice clean SEO URLS?

both.

'seo urls' (read, keywords in the link) aren't that important.

it's a STATIC url with one-resource with one-access method that's important.

all this t= p= printthread= archive= mode=threaded mode=hybrid crap that kills your SEO.
on a 20-post topic (assuming a single page in options), there's literally

1 t
20 p
1 archive
1 t + threaded
1 t + hybrid
20 p + threaded
20 p + hybird
1 print

all for the same exact resource

and then there's the individual show posts, so, add another 20.

With default vB on a normal 20 post thread, you have nearly 90 options to view the exact same thing.

90.

which one should google index?
which one is more important?

THAT'S what kills your SEO.

you end up fighting yourself for ranking, which puts you to the bottom.

The sitemap generator is merely a suggestion of urls for bots to go to. it is not the be-all end all.

Please follow the readme directions.

You need to chmod your data/ folder to 777

TheInsaneManiac

So vs the tfseo the sitemap would be the best?

thanks for that

I haven't run tfseo, nor will i ever, so i can't comment on it.

IMO, most ideal to least ideal:

1) vbseo + sitemap
2) some other single url per content source url thing + hacked sitemap code to compensate for the links
3) some other single url per content source url thing
4) stock vb + sitemap

Thank you for this, installed and nominated :D

I have a problem though. When I click my Google sitemap URL (http://www.northwestfirearms.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz) I get this:

Not Found

The requested URL /home/com/northwestfirearms/html/forum/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php was not found on this server.

I've verified the file is there, and I CHMOD'd the data directory as per the instructions. I've also manually created a sitemap. Also, when I try to specify the location of the sitemap in my webmaster tools, it says it can't find it (obviously if I can't, then it can't).

Check your .htaccess file, as if I remember rightly the addon setup the rewrite to the forum root, which by the way is really where the sitemap should be to comply ;).

Do you have something in the "Sitemap Files URL" of the vBSEO Sitemap Settings (ACP -> vBSEO -> vBSEO Sitemap Settings) by any chance?

If so remove it, save the changes and try again.

You might also want to read through this (http://www.vbseo.com/wiki/Sitemap:FAQ).

Still getting the same message about the vbseo_getsitemap.php not being found. What interesting is even if I copy the sitemap .gz file to either the host root (/) or the forum root (forum/) it still comes up with that error message instead of letting me view/download the file.

Joey Link
08-15-2008, 04:17 PM
Another thing is even when I have all those settings correct (the rewrite and all that in the .htaccess) it still doesn't put a copy of the sitemap in the host root or the forum root.

Joey Link
08-15-2008, 05:04 PM
It has to be a problem with the .htaccess file. When I delete it, I can see the files in the root directory just fine, upload them to google, etc. When it's there in the root directory I get the vbseo_getsitemap.php not found error.

Try to add this in .htaccess:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteBase /forum/

I am using this hack. Recently I am geting below message from my Google Sitemap. How can I solve problem? Pls help me immediately.

URLs not followed
When we tested a sample of the URLs from your Sitemap, we found that some URLs were not accessible to Googlebot because they contained too many redirects. Please change the URLs in your Sitemap that redirect and replace them with the destination URL (the redirect target). All valid URLs will still be submitted.

jupiter5,

looks like you have a redirect from your archive pages, you might want to disable "Include Archive Pages" option.

VBUsers,

make sure that your server allows external http connection so that vBSEO Sitemap Generator can do a ping. I'd also suggest to manually submit your sitemap to Google:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/dashboard

if you don't have vBSEO installed, make sure that you have "Include vBSEOed URLs" option disabled. If you do have it, make sure that you are running the latest version - vBSEO3.2.0.

ok,

having an issue that need help. Below is the error I am getting.

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@ANYSITE.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

i replaced the email addy so please don't think its "anysite.com"

I read several posts on here as well as vbseo site and tried some of the fixes suggested to no avail. The scripts works fine other then allowing be able to view this file. It produces the map, sends me an email. however everytime I try to view the file from my browser I end up with that error.

This was a clean install on a new website with the only other major mod being CMPS. I've used both in past and have never run into this issue. The hosting company is same company I use for a personal owned vbulletin site that is running both these scripts and many more. No issues then either.

Can someone please help?

Thanks
Will

Need a Little help with this please ?

Its working fantastic but the problem is that nginx does not parse the url for the archive correctly

IE

index.php/f-123123.html (this is normal apache behaviour)

but

index.php?f123123.html (is the way nginx is showing it)

the ? should be a /

and this is causing all the urls made by the sitemap generator to be wrong and giving me warnings in the google sitemap site.

Is there a rewrite clause that could help
i asked in the nginx thread on vbulletin but its not being answered.

Thanks in advance
Mick
