Hi guys,
I'm using this powerful mod but since my hoster have changed the server where I'm hosted the bot have stopped to download the sitemap of my site (for what I see in "Show Sitemap Downloads Log").

NickyNet,

do you have vBSEO installed (this seems to be related to URL rewrites)? If yes, please open a ticket on vbseo.com.

cheat-master30,
1. "extra-urls.txt" is used to include non-forum URLs in sitemap.
2. it should not affect indexing of non-forum areas directly.

newsoftw,

try to add this in .htaccess file:
<IfModule mod_security.c>
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
</IfModule>

cmiller1014,

you should manually submit sitemap on google webmaster account.

donnie_ogm,

try to set 0666 permissions for vbseo_sitemap/data/downloads.dat file.

Go to your AdminCP, click on vBSEO. Then, click on vBSEO Sitemap Settings. About 3/4 of the way down you'll see the space for your password there.

make sure that you have 0777 permissions set for data/ folder.

Danial_Faster,Adam21,

try to open settings via vBulletin options dropdown instead of direct link in admincp.

IRANCITY,

did you generate sitemap?

edermix,

probably your subforums are private (not visible to guests), that's why they are not included in sitemap.

You should submit sitemap as http://www.mydomain.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz, just make sure that you created .htaccess file in forums folder as described.

You should submit sitemap as http://www.mydomain.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz, just make sure that you created .htaccess file in forums folder as described.

Actually i'm the webmaster of two web site.
In one, this:
http://www.er6italia.com/vbulletin/sitemap_index.xml.gz

ALL work fine but in the other, making the same installation operation in the same vbulletin version, doesn't work.
http://www.vwgolfcommunity.com/vbulletin/sitemap_index.xml.gz

The two board use a different provider.
The forlder and file permission are the same.
It's very very strange.

Here:
http://www.vwgolfcommunity.com/vbulletin/sitemap_index.xml.gz

I receive this:

Not Found
The requested URL /vbulletin/sitemap_index.xml.gz was not found on this server.

With the .htaccess standard.

If i change .htaccess from

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

TO

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ ../vbulletin/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

Then i receive:

Not Found
The requested URL /HOME/com/v/w/g/vwgolfcommunity/www/vbulletin/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php was not found on this server.

I think that the problem is the .htaccess but i don't know very well the setting of this file.

I've an other question.
My server is an Apache.
If u launch:
http://www.vwgolfcommunity.com/vbulletin/sitemap_01.xml

i receive
Sitemap not found

But if i lounch
http://www.vwgolfcommunity.com/vbulletin/sitemap_01.xml.gz

I can see the sitemap.

Why this ?

My htaccess is:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /vbulletin/
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

Kayden

Okay, installation went smoothly, and the settings have been tweaked. Now I've run into a snag.

When clicking on a sub-forum, I receive the following error.
Not Found
The requested URL /display.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I know the error is coming from the .htaccess file. After I delete...
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
... everything works fine again.

What's the issue?

iojam
12-02-2008, 07:37 PM
mc0676,

you should use *.xml.gz sitemap URLs.

Kayden,

is that your full .htaccess or you have other rewrite rules?

Kayden
12-02-2008, 07:41 PM
There are others.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^xxxxx.com$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.xxxxx.com$
RewriteRule ^forum/?(.*)$ "http\:\/\/www\.xxxxx\.com\/$1" [R=301,L]

iojam
12-02-2008, 07:56 PM
And you have nothing that refers to display.php on your site?

Kayden
12-02-2008, 08:00 PM
There's no file by that name. There's no template by that name, either, so it's an odd occurrence.

The closest thing is forumdisplay.php, obviously.

EDIT: Well, I removed the other rewrite rules, and replaced with the vbseo line.

Seems to work. Hope it doesn't cause any issues.

iojam
12-03-2008, 01:48 PM
You can replace "^forum/?(.*)$" in your other rewrite rule with "^forum/(.*)$".

Fireproof,

you can check if mod_rewrite works on your site as described in http://www.vbseo.com/f77/how-check-if-mod_rewrite-working-my-site-21502/

I am having horrible problems trying to get the mod rewrite to move my sitemap_index.xml.gz to the forum root.

I tried the mod_rewrite check as stated above using this code

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule testpage\.html http://www.google.com [R]

and didn't work so I contacted my host and he said that its written incorrectly. He put this code in instead, and it worked.

Options +FollowSymLinks

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

RewriteRule ^testpage.html$ http://www.google.com [NC,L,R=307]

I was forwarded to google's site.

In the VBSEO instructions I'm supposed to put to put this in my .htaccess file to move the sitemap_index.xml.gz file:

RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

but since the google code was written incorrectly for it to work on my site, maybe the other RewriteRule code is written incorrectly as well.

I can see sitemap_index.xml.gz in my /vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder (and the folder has 777 permissions) and the generator and pings all work.

I'm really frustrated and hope someone can help me out.

Hello,

Thank you for providing this, but is there a particular way that the extra urls text file is meant to be laid out? as I have been getting a mismatched tag error in sitemap 1 file, ever since adding urls to the extra-urls.txt. I couldn't find any reference on how this was to be done so I assumed that I just add them in sitemap format which is what I did. Before adding extra urls everything appeared to be working fine.

Thanks for your help.

Got it working. I had to allow "Everyone" Full Control.
Still have 3 issues:

1. The file created is located in /vbseo_sitemap/data when it needs to be created in the root of the web. I tried changing this value in the AdminCP, but didn't save in the root.
2. The file is a .gz when it needs to be an uncompressed sitemap.xml
3. The results show [create sitemap index] filename: sitemap_index.xml.gz, number of sitemaps: 1 [3,112.0Kb mem used] [0s (+0s)]. The conpressed file is 2Kb and uncompressed 30Kb. Why is this when the report says 3.1MB?

Thanks.

Hello,

1. you should use rewrite rules for IIS (check installation instructions), ISAPI_Rewrite module is required

3. This is a PHP memory usage report, it's not related to file size.

Hi all,

I have been trying to get this to work for a couple of days now. I've looked all over but I haven't seen the particular error that I'm getting so I thought I would brave the wild and finally ask.

I uploaded all of the files in the upload dir to my forum root, changed the data folder perm to 0777.

I already have an .htaccess file so I added the required lines to it so it looks like this:

Redirect /forums/ http://www.houseofparents.com/
AddHandler php5-script .php
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
I installed the product and left the settings pretty much at default. I don't have vbSEO installed so that was changed to "No".

Everything looks great but when I try to generate the sitemap I get the following error:

Could someone please help me with this because I do not know what I am doing wrong.

When I open up the sitemap_1 file it generates my forum root url first and then it follows with this:

<url>
<loc><url></loc>
<priority>1</priority>
<lastmod>2008-12-14T10:45:24+00:00</lastmod>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
</url>

From then on it is all out of wack until it goes back to my forum urls.

Here is an example of the format that I have used in the extra-urls.txt:

<url>
<loc></loc>
<priority>1.00</priority>
<lastmod>2007-10-30</lastmod>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
</url>

I am sure this is something really simple and would appreciate any help.

Thank you

Nevermind, I finally found the solution on your forums but now I am having a problem with google giving me sitemap errors for all but the last sitemap:

Okay I found a setting in the control panel to change the maximum urls which has fixed this issue.

Hi I'm having a problem. It works fine most of the time but is missing out a large number of my threads. They're controled by VbGeek's GARS system but surely that shouldn't be a problem? I also have vbSEO installed.

you should remove all entries from "Add-ons" list option in case if you don't have corresponding modules installed.

are those threads visible to guests?

HI iojam, yes they are both viewable and one can even be posted in by unregistered users. I've checked all my sitemaps and none are listed. I even tried changing the permissions to basically a free for all then generating the sitemap but still no luck.

CP,

sometimes Yahoo fails to receive the ping, I wouldn't worry about that and recommend to manually submit it to yahoo here: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites

Divvy,

you can enter "vbseo_sitemap_task" as varname.

mmoore5553,

you should manually submit sitemap_index.xml.gz in Google Webmaster Account to check that's parsed correctly.

There's no problem in your sitemap. Infact, this is how sitemap looks.

can u plz explain me this

CHMOD 777 the 'forum-root/vbseo_sitemap/data/' folder

This just means that you need to give write permissions to data folder, which you had already given I suppose, that is why your sitemap is created successfully.

I'm trying to figure out how to make vbseo put the sitemap on the domain root rather than in the forumsroot/vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder but can't quite seem to figure it out.

My guess is that it has something to do with the rewrite url in the .htaccess file but I don't know what to change it toto make it work correctly.

Currently I have an htaccess file in my domain root, forums root and the forumsroot/vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder but they all say the same thing. I'm guessing one of them needs to be changed or removed.

This is what they all 3 say:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ forums/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

I see in the admin panel there's a setting for Sitemap Files URL, but putting my domain url in there doesn't change anything once I re-run it. As a matter of fact, the cron runs, says done, and it now hasn't updated the file anywhere apparently. Well, I don't see a sitemap file on the root anyway. however, if I type this url in my browser: http://www.mydomain.com/sitemap_1.xml.gz, a current sitemap pulls up. I'm confused.

Can someone give me some help?

Thanks!

OK, I think I have this figured out and it does indeed appear to be working although a "sitempa" file isn't being generated on the root.

Yes, it DOES work, that way only.

The .htaccess in forums root is taking care of sitemap url being called from forum root despite it actually resides in data folder.

1. Delete the .gz files from your vbseo_sitemap/data folder manually.
2. Disable the Yahoo Text sitemap option in sitemap settings.
3. Run sitemap again.

Hi iojam

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have my forum in the root dir.

I have submitted: www.mysite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz

I have uploaded the .htaccess in my root, with this inside:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

But when I click on my Google Sitemap Index URL (www.mysite.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz)
I get Object not found!.

I don't see any sitemap_index.xml.gz in my root directory. Is this correct?

Hope you have time to get back to me on this..

I installed the update a few days ago and selected "Yes" to include tag pages & social groups pages. Nevertheless the report shows Tag URL's & Social Groups URL's = 0.

Page update frequency for tags is daily (priority 0.8), for social groups weekly (priority 0.3)
And yes, there're tags in the included forums ;-)

What do i do wrong or does this feature need vBSEO?

Greetings. I know this is something trivial, and an easy fix, I just can't think of what is wrong at the moment.

I just erased all my old sitemaps, etc, from the sever, as well as Google, starting fresh.

I just installed vB SEO, as well as the new version of the sitemap generator. However, when testing if it works or not, I get a 403 Forbidden message.

What do I need to change, because if I can't access it, I highly doubt Google can.

Hiya,
I've been using this mod for ages now but last week my host decided to transfer my account to another server and since then I've had issues.

I have .htaccess in my domain root with the following because the domain, and the parked .net domain, is set to not use the 'www.' sub
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.com
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.com/$1 [R=permanent,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.domain\.net
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.net/$1 [R=permanent,L]and as per the vBSEO instructions for this mod the following .htaccess file in my forums root
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]All was working well before the transfer, or at least if it wasn't no one was complaining lol, but now when anyone tries to go directly to www.domain.com/forum/ (http://www.domain.com/forum/) the www. sub isn't being removed. Yet any other area of the site it is.

I've tried everything I can think of and all I have discovered is that if I delete the vBSEO .htaccess from the forum root the RewriteRule for removing the www. sub works perfectly.

Can anyone help as this is starting to drive me insane. :(

Thanks

therogueforums,

make sure that mod_rewrite is supported: http://www.vbseo.com/f77/how-check-if-mod_rewrite-working-my-site-21502/

AtomicFPS,

if you have any files inside data/ folder, try to set 0666 permissions for them.

Sym0n,

put this to the top of forums/.htaccess:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^domain\.net
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.net/forums/$1 [R=permanent,L]

Does this work in 3.8?

Having similar issue as Sym0n (though I am forcing a www, and he's suppressing it), and the suggested fix didn't appear to work. I have a large number of domains pointing to same site, so my forced www code in my main htaccess file (root directory, not forums root) is this:

Options +FollowSymLinks
Options -MultiViews

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]

With the stock recommended vbseo htaccess config in the /forums directory, the www. forcing does not work, and URL's remain at domain.com/forums instead of www.domain.com/forums.

I tried adding this to the top of the htaccess in the forums directory:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/forums/$1 [R=301,L]

but that didn't work and caused a server error. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

aciurczak

I tried a more simple pairing of www. forcing to see if that would work, but I couldn't get it to work either:

in main htaccess file:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

and in /forums htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/forums/$1 [L,R=301]

RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

What happens in that case is quite weird, it rewrites it to:

http://www.domain.com/forums//var/chroot/home/content/x/x/x/username/html/forums

(some of that has been masked slightly, but the format is exactly that)

I'd love to get this to work, so any suggestions would be appreciated. If I can't get it to work, I was thinking about deep-sixing all of the htaccess masking for the sitemap data files, can I use a cron job to just move them after they are created into the root directory? If so, which files do i need to move?

you should create file named ".htaccess" in forums folder with content as described in installation instructions.

Go to this forum:

http://forum.modrewrite.com

Sign up and post your issue in the new topics forum (new users can only post in that section until they are approved). Post a link in your question to my similar question:

http://forum.modrewrite.com/viewtopic.php?t=23736

and I'm sure they will suggest a working htaccess solution for you very quickly. When they do, post it up back here so the next schmo (after us 2 schmo's) don't have to search the internet and spend hours on what is at its core just a simple question.

I'm sorry this might be a stupid question...

In the readme file it says to only edit the settings if you "know what you're doing" because they are set to be optimized for most boards. Well, I'm not experienced at all in this area, so I left them as is. But, out of curiosity, I wanted to look and see what kinds of options there were. The first one is "VBSeo Installed?" and the default answer is yes. Do I have that installed? I have not purchased VBSeo, so would I change it to no? It seems like I should, but the description of the question talks about static CRUs and things, and I haven't the slightest idea what any of those are. All I have is this product that this thread relates to - the free one. I did not pay for VBSeo. Should I select Yes (default) or change to no???

Thanks!

Are these part of the instructions? I'm sure I followed everything but can't figure out why it would point there when in fact the files are stored elsewhere. The bots didn't make one download which was why I looked there. Kindly point me in the right direction.

In the AdminCP settings for this mod, one of the options is "Max URLs in Sitemap Files." In the description it says "Google allows no more than 50,000 URLs per file." What happens if my site starts getting over 50,000 URL's?? If I leave the default setting at 20,000 what will happen when I get to 20,000? Does it just start making a new sitemap file, or do I lose old links in the sitemap?

I hope that question makes sense...

that is cloaking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloaking), that's why those URLs are not included in sitemap.

I triple checked and verified that the line is there. Since I had an existing .htaccess, I simply cut and pasted the line you have in the htaccess.txt file. I can access the report details but not the linked gz file.

edit: I renamed my htaccess and uploaded the one you have and it works. My guess is the bad bots list is conflicting with yours.

Are you running vBSEO as well? If yes, you need v3.2.0 or greater to use "Smart priority" option in sitemap generator.

ATVTorture

When our cron job runs automatically in the middle of the night to update the sitemap, it will get say 20,000 URLs generated. However, when we run it manually from scheduled tasks, it will generate an additional 4000-5000 URLs for a total of somewhere between 24,000 and 25,000. It's random how many additional it will get from the previous scheduled run but it's always in the thousands of new URLs.

What could possibly be the cause of this sillyness?

Thanks!
Buster

You should not run it manually in Scheduled tasks manager since that executes it with admin privileges and links to private subforums are included in sitemap as a result. You can manually create sitemap in vbseo_sitemap/ interface though.

Makes perfect sense. Thanks for the tip. Re-ran it the way you suggested to get it updated.

I have another question. I noticed in a lot forums that many people submit multiple sitemaps for one domain URL like sitemap_1, sitemap_2, sitemap_3, etc.. What is the purpose of this and are they getting a whole differnet set of URLs?

Thanks!
Buster

iojam

You should only submit sitemap_index.xml.gz - it includes links to all your sitemap files (sitemap_X.xml.gz)

ATVTorture
02-04-2009, 03:47 AM
Well when I look in that file, all it shows is sitemap_1.xml.gz. So what's the difference? I guess I don't understand the purpose of multiple sitemap files. I also don't see what generates multiple ones since the sitemap generator only creates one by default.

Is there some advantage to multiple ones and if so, what do the differnet ones point to differently than just one?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Buster

In case if you have many URLs vBSEO Sitemap Generator will separate them on multiple file (default setting is 20,000 URLs max per file).

I keep running the generate link from the control panel and it says that everything ran fine. But when I go through FTP to the site the files it said it created are nowhere to be found.

Here is the output it gives me:

It worked! :) thank you iojam!!

Now when I visit the forum in firefox there are no google adsense ads anywhere to be found. Would this sitemap generator affect the ads in the pages?

here the the forum:
http://forum.horseville.com

the is the page for example:
http://forum.horseville.com/intros/1506-new-youngster-here-any-suggestions.html
When viewed with IE it shows the ads, when viewed with firefox no ads are to be found.

First off the fix for vb 3.8.2 as the group changes break the base code:-

");
$pcount = ceil($tcount['cnt']/$vboptions['vm_perpage']);

Next up we are getting a load of garbage in our sitemap even the zcat cant read the files:-

sh -c ' for i in *.gz; do echo $i; zcat $i | head; done' > 1
zcat: sitemap_21.xml.gz: trailing garbage ignored

zcat: sitemap_39.xml.gz: uncompress failed
zcat: sitemap_42.xml.gz: trailing garbage ignored
zcat: urllist.txt.gz: not in gzip format

Even some of the files that can be decompress are corrupt internally with invalid xml e.g. the data of the lastmod appearing in the url and missing close tags all over.

Has anyone seen this sort of corruption before?

Thanks for the suggestion iojam, I was already in the data dir when checking the compression with zcat.

I've done some more digging and its definitely something to do with the gzip compression turning that off in the config fixes the issue. We've not had any issues with standard gzip support on the forums, but something in the sitemap code seems to be triggering an issue with it.

After looking at the code which is only a few lines I can only conclude the issue is with the underlying php function. There are a number of bugs still open in php's bug tracker which may be the cause.

For the time being we will live with gzip off.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^example\.com$
RewriteRule (.*) http://example.com/$1 [R=301,L]and:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^example\.com$

iojam, thanks that code worked. But my situation is slightly different in that I have two different domains (.com and .net) pointing to the same site and don't want them to rewrite the domain.

Sy -

Go to this forum:

http://forum.modrewrite.com

Sign up and post your issue in the new topics forum (new users can only post in that section until they are approved). Post a link in your question to my similar question:

http://forum.modrewrite.com/viewtopic.php?t=23736

and I'm sure they will suggest a working htaccess solution for you very quickly. When they do, post it up back here so the next schmo (after us 2 schmo's) don't have to search the internet and spend hours on what is at its core just a simple question.
aciurczak, cheers mate. I followed your advice and headed over to modrewrite.com. After just my initial post richardk nailed it in one and now it works perfectly.

In case anyone else requires the same thing:

root

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.+\.(example\.(com|net))$
RewriteRule .* http://%1%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

/forum/
Options +FollowSymLinks

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.+\.(example\.(com|net))$
RewriteRule .* http://%1%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

I have been using the Sitemap Generator for months, I just upgrade to 2.5 and I have a couple of questions

Questions:

Show Sitemap Downloads Log -- Should I erase or keep them? Is there any option no to save the log?

Show SE Bots Activity Log-- How do I erase the log? if it is possible to erase, should I erase or keep them? Is there any option no to save the log?

Show Reports List -- Should I erase or keep the list? Is there any option no to save the list?

Last question: I upgraded to 2.5 but still shows 2.2 at the bottom, am I doing something wrong?

I'd recommend to setup "Prune log" setting in vbseo_sitemap_config.php file to automatically erase old logs:
define('VBSEO_SM_PRUNE', 0); // logs age in days to prune

Last question: I upgraded to 2.5 but still shows 2.2 at the bottom, am I doing something wrong?Make sure that you uploaded all new files to vbseo_sitemap/ folder and imported xml product file in vB admincp.
