Check the html source of the page when that happens, possibly there is a database error.

Hello iojam,
We're using vBulletin 3.7.5, have vBSEO 3.2 and just installed version 2.5 of the Sitemap Generator.
The problem is that when we try to run the task, it outputs this
[SECTION START] blog tags [6,796.6Kb mem used] [20,219,278s (+281s)]
[create sitemap file] filename: sitemap_502.xml.gz, number of urls: 4 [6,799.7Kb mem used] [20,219,278s (+0s)]
[create sitemap in text format] part #503 [6,799.9Kb mem used] [20,219,278s (+0s)]
[create sitemap index] filename: sitemap_index.xml.gz, number of sitemaps: 502 [6,927.0Kb mem used] [20,219,278s (+0s)]
Then just dies.
Any ideas as to what might cause this behavior? We're not getting any SQL errors and the upgrade to version 2.5 went smoothly and was done correctly.

MTGDarkness,
make sure that you did NOT change permissions for vbseo_getsitemap.php file (it should be set to 0644).
mdrs2,
that's a server time and it doesn't affect sitemap generation.
MTGDarkness
03-02-2009, 05:07 PM
The permissions were wrong; I reset them to 644. Should the other files also be 664? Every file (and folder) in the folder is set to CHMOD777. I reset the file you mentioned to 664, but I'm still getting these 500 errors...

try to disable text sitemap option and remove *.gz files from data/ folder.

Hey VbSEO support.
Ok, got a question for you. Our site, AVSFORUM, is quite large. Each night the Sitemap runs and it does MILLIONS of entries and sends it to Google and the others. I really do not think this is a good thing as it can not index the site that quick. So I am thinking that maybe I have the site map settings incorrect or something for it to send such data each night.
So the question...For large sites, what would be your recommended settings?
Attached is a screen shot showing what I mean. (Yes, we get that many new posts and threads in a day as it also did run the night before. :) (Talking about the + part of the report))
Side note...It has been quite some time that I attempted to use your SEO product for in the past, for those who recall, it was a total nightmare with server loads. This goes back a few years. So, has this improved. Please feel free to contact me outside this thread to talk again about it.
Thank you.

Skierpetros,
make sure that you created .htaccess file as described.
David Bott,
it's ok to resubmit it. Google will read your sitemap and determine changes in it.
MTGDarkness,
permissions for vbseo_sitemap/ folder should be 0755. All php files - 0644.

Google has a problem with sites that are using sitemaps generated with this Mod that also run TFseo or another URL and SEO mod.
Google webmaster tools says my sitemap has duplicate entries, because it is listing the original url and also the 301 redirected (SEO friendly URL) one.
It is not listing my site with an index in the top of Google which it used to do... and Im pretty sure its because the sitemap is freaking them out.
has anyone got a solution so that the tool just generates the rewritten URLs or any alternative ideas what to do?
Changing the settings to 'include or exclude' old URLs doesnt work...presumably because Im not running VBSEO bu TFseo...

should i have this
or
it should be in your forum root.
So if you have your main site directory is
/var/www/html/yoursite.com
but your forum is actually located at
/var/www/html/yoursite.com/forum/
Then you need to add it to the htaccess in this directory
/var/www/html/yoursite.com/forum/
and use this code
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ /vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

I noticed what I think might be a bug...
I first installed an older version of this mod, and I just updated to the newest release (2.5) and I noticed a problem. For some reason, if I run the CRON item manually from the scheduled tasks area, the report it generates is just wrong. The links are all broken, it comes up with about 500 links too many (random user profiles, threads, posts, and forums, that don't even exist). I have mine set to run once a day at 4AM, and the auto run works fine, so I don't know why this would be happening...
Any thoughts?
iojam
03-22-2009, 12:13 PM
Hello,
if you need to run it manually, you should do that via vbseo_sitemap/ interface (not in vB admincp->scheduled tasks).
joe1989
03-23-2009, 02:45 AM
OK, thanks. But, is there a reason that it works when the scheduled task is executed automatically, and the problem only occurs when it is executed manually?
iojam

Yes, when you run it manually it's executed witho your (admin) privileges.

All of the sudden the Yahoo Notify stopped working on my board. When I view the reports list, it says yes under Google notify, but No under Yahoo notify. The only change I have made recently that might have some effect on it (but shouldn't, I don't think) is I set up my Google Webmaster account and submitted the sitemap there, on Google. But, that should have nothing to do with Yahoo notify, right? Any ideas?
iojam
04-02-2009, 07:29 PM
JohorBahru,
make sure that you have only one scheduled task in vB admincp and regenerate sitemap.

Yahoo sitemap submission service has issues recently, so I'd recommend to manually submit it to https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites

04-03-2009, 01:08 AM
OK, thanks for the tip. One more question - I'm not sure if you'll be able to answer, because it's probably more a question for Google staff.
I have a Google webmaster's account, and for some reason, it shows my sitemap as containing over 2,000 URL's (which is accurate) but there are less than 800 'indexed' URL's. Why is this? Does Google just take a while to index the others, or will they never be indexed? How does it decide which pages in the sitemap are indexed, and why are they not all indexed?
I know, a lot of questions, and like I said, I don't know if you're going to have answers for me.

Greetings,
Just trying out this mod for the first time. using vBulletin 3.7.3. I believe I followed the instructions to the T. However, when generating a sitemap, it'll generate ~3-5 .xml.gz files and then errors out to a 500: Internal Server Error.
Is there a permission or setting I missed? Could my host be screwing up something?

How come in Google the number of "Indexed URLs" keeps declining, even though the number of URL's in my sitemap grows every day? Aren't the 'indexed URLs' supposed to be increasing?!

because a sitemap is only a guide to show google that the pages are there , google will only index pages its thinks are relevant or that have backlinks to that page, you need to look at your on site seo and internal linking to help your site get more indexed pages imo

I kept getting the 404 error and did not get any help and gave up on this product for the last couple of months. I decided to try again yesterday and through lots of reading and trial and error, I got it worked out. If anyone else is getting the 404 error, try adding this to the .htaccess in the forum root:
RewriteBase /forum
Obviously you'll need to change forum to reflect your forum root.
I'm not sure why I didn't get any support but I'm glad I got it figured out.

If its just for the forum, is there a solution for the entire site?

The number of indexed links v. the number of links in the sitemap will not converse (for large boards) when the update frequencies are set incorrectly, see this post:

I just fixed my problem. I didn't have the VBSEO plugin installed correctly so now it's working fine. :)

This may seem like a silly question but during installation you have to set the data folder to CMOD 777.
Are we supposed to leave this at CMOD 777 or change it back to 755?

It should be left set to 0777.

I had that same problem and deleted the stuff in the /data subdirectory (after being instructed to) then ran it again and it ran fine.
Thank you.
update for vb 4.0?
Thx.
The 4.0 compatible version is currently in pre-release status, but can be downloaded by any vBSEO customer at the vBSEO.com Downloads section.

I installed this and it is working perfect, except the reports show that "Moreover" FAILED.
Is that something I did wrong or is it the website "moreover"?
Other than that everything works perfect.

Is there a way to make it work without .htaccess?

Okay, I have 2 weird issues and some really dumb questions so please bare with me.
1) Whenever I generate a sitemap all happens properly except in the end I get a Database error :S. Like the sitemap has been generated but I am still getting this error.
2) Are we supposed to put the .htaccess file in mysite/forum/.htaccess or mysite/.htaccess? Also, what if i have it in both?

Hi, I just bought the VBSEO package and I wonder why sitemap generator is not clubbed with the package ... I have the latest vBulletin (version 4.2) and don't know if it is going to work with it.
Can anyone confirm if it is going to work with VB 4.2 please? Would appreciate your help.
Regards.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
That fixed it for me. Was about to uninstall this mod since it appeared to be worthless without the ability to access the sitemap file...

This is installed and I assume correctly but not sure yet. I have not uploaded the htaccess file yet because I'm not sure where to put it.
