Email reminder for inactive users

I'm currently using 1.13 which is working well for me. I like the option to email the reports of who was sent an email and any invalid addresses. Could you inlcude that option in the next update?

I plan to update this - for the time being i have just added basic logging.

Ummm.. the last I checked, this forum is for 3.6 Mods and add-ons.. this is NOT 3.7!!!! I tried to update your lastest version and it states the product is for 3.7 and not compatible to 3.6... I am running 3.6 and refuse to upgrade... PLEASE move this mod to 3.7 and kill it here... or support the 3.6....

Firstly - You've not even clicked install so you get ZERO support on any of the modification. Secondly there is no need for the attitude - I will quite happily move this to another section. It didn't even occur to me that the sections had been split up.

This may sound silly, but how do you make it run? :confused::o I want to send out my first lot of reminder emails now but don't know how to initiate the process lol. Otherwise, is there a set time when it runs automatically (each day for example)?

Hmm, may I know from where can I view the log entries that store where the emails are sent to?

currently there is basic information about the users that have been contacted. this can be found in admincp/remindermail.php (or use the link under the "Users" section in the admin CP [see attached pictures])

Edit to set when you want the cron job to execute
Click on Run Now to execute the task im mediately

It only has the higher amount of queries when it finds inactive users. after a short while it will reduce as there will be less inactive users to contact. also if you disable the logging features it will reduce queries further, as will reducing the amount of users the mod processes.

I could take out 2 queries and mail directly - but i think this would only be disguising things by reducing queries not processing time.

This way the processing is distributed more - 14 queries is not going to effect performance anyway, especially not for a forum with under 500 users, of which 10% are active.

Additionally, The problem seems to have gone away after Email Reminder finished processing users & sending out emails.

it should do, but i cant say for sure.. the previous versions worked with 3.6.8, and 1.2 works with 3.7.2.

there was a bug and a half in 1.2.1 - i've hopefully erased that now. you need to go into phpMyAdmin and locate the "datastore" table and delete the row "pluginlist" and that will unlock the site. Go back into admin CP and remove the plugin.

there was a bug and a half in 1.2.1 - i've hopefully erased that now. you need to go into phpMyAdmin and locate the "datastore" table and delete the row "pluginlist" and that will unlock the site. Go back into admin CP and remove the plugin.

Ok, deleted the row and it came back.

Yeah, bugs suck ... but all software has them from Microsoft down to vb plugins. No long term harm, but I don't have to to any aerobics for a month. Great product, it's been very benefitial to helping grow my community.

I have upgraded my board to 3.7.2 patch 1.

Some members asked me to delete there account. I did that but they still receive the emails.
What can be the problem?

In regards to deleted members:

If a member has been fully deleted from the databasr then it is impossible for the plugin to contact them unless there is already a mail in the mail queue waiting to go.

if however you are just moving the user to a different usergroup then you need to make sure that the usergroup is not in the list to be monitored.

I'm checking out the Report for Inactive Users and it doesn't seem to be showing unique users at all. A bunch of userid/usernames are repeated lots of times. Is that a bug?

Ok well I think I am gonna wait a bit until the bugs are resolved before I use this one again... I started it emailing reminders to inactive members just now, and not longer after it started, the whole forum went down with a database error.

Disabled the plugin system via config.php and turned this one off to get access again, and now after checking the mailout log, according to that it emailed the last couple of people about 30-40 times over :(

The last version did the same thing on our forum too, was emailing the same members over and over again every 10 mins when it was supposed to do so every 90 days, so I had to stop using that one too :confused:

I do appreciate the efforts though, just think I might wait until its safe from issues like this in future as I don't want to get in trouble for spamming.

Ok it may be possible all those emails didn't go out afterall - even though according to the log it emailed about about 100 people, nobody has logged in at all from that list since then. Generally when reminders are sent out, the aftermath is MIA members showing up out of the blue to have a look around.

Maybe the database error prevented them all going out?

Will be relieved if this is the case since I know those two members didn't get spammed afterall :)

I'm also having a few issues with this. First, some of my members have special characters in their usernames such as '', /, etc and this is causing lots of problems when it tries to insert new rows into the database as they are no properly escaped.

Secondly, when I disable the mod in Settings, it is still trying to insert users into the mailqueue and reminder_log so it's obviously not actually disabled.

This is obviously a serious bug. I have users report that they've received 1000s of emails. Doh! Also found that it was practically impossible to stop the mod from sending emails. I disabled the plugins, disabled the mod and finally, had to uninstall it to stop.

I really like this mod and the old version was working fine for months for me. I was excited about the new version as the reporting seemed like it would be a good but am having endless troubles with the latest version!

I'm using your previous version on 3.7.2 PL1 and working fine so far.

The only problem I'm facing is the e-mails sent to users are not sent using admin e-mail address just like regular Vb notifications. It tooks the sender as origin path of my system like directions for admin mail box. The e-mails are sent anyway but e-mails systems like Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail put them as spam.

I tried to find in your code a reason for this but no lucky so far. Any tips ?

I removed the need for cron in the 1.2 update. it uses plugins to run and is based on page loads. every time you load the page it checks for inactive users.

First, the new version still shows 1.2.2 on products list on Vb.

Second, as we don't have the report e-mail any more and you don't use cron as well, there's no way to check if the product is working fine, correct ? I mean, on the previous version (the late one) we could use scheduled tasks to run this mod manually and now we don't this option.

Third, checking Admin CP -> Inactive Reminders -> Reports
I can't see nothing but only a list of inactive users where is showed their e-mails and informing if those e-mails are valid or not. It doesn't give me information like for who reminders was really sent.

Fourth, I can't see any difference between previows version for this one, I mean on your mod log you said the option "From Email" was added but in Admin CP -> Inactive Reminders -> Settings but there's different in it.

Sorry for all the questions but this mod is one of my favorites installed and had been working great a helping us a lot.

I could add a devdebug message to show you what is happening each page but that would mean you have to enable debug mode (which isnt the best idea for a live board). Im open up to suggestions as to what information you wish to be displayed?

Reports screen is fine, good info. It's just tough because you'll have to believe if all those users there really received their reminders....lol.... Anyway, the report list means all the users received a reminder indeed, correct ? I've noticed that some users appears on this report twice, is that correct ?

I've got now when I upgraded to 1.2.5. What happens if I let the field "E-mail From" blank ? The mod will consider to use the Admin e-mail set on Vb Options ?

First Issues...but at least I got confirmation that's working fine because I got some e-mails "returned to sender".

One of those returned one was because this user has the simbol & in his name and this messed up with his e-mail address.

Other issue was the reminder message is kind of messy, some characters like \r\n\r\n are showed between the words.

Just a tip: Why not include a field like on settings like: Send a Test Reminder to:
This way you could click "sent" the the e-mail you inform and system sent it as a test to the address you give, this way you can check the system and check also how good is your message.

Jesus i get emailed about updates to this product almost everyday its driving me crazy. I clicked uninstall and im still getting emailed about updates. Anything i can do to stop it?

I've noticed in this new version 1.2.5 we have 2 reminderemail.php file, one in Admincp folder and another that was supposed to be uploaded to the forum root, correct ? I checked and both contents are different despite of same name.



Reports screen is fine, good info. It's just tough because you'll have to believe if all those users there really received their reminders....lol.... Anyway, the report list means all the users received a reminder indeed, correct ? I've noticed that some users appears on this report twice, is that correct ?





I've got now when I upgraded to 1.2.5. What happens if I let the field "E-mail From" blank ? The mod will consider to use the Admin e-mail set on Vb Options ?

The only remindermail that should be there is the one in the admincp. dont know how that other one got there. delete it.

First Issues...but at least I got confirmation that's working fine because I got some e-mails "returned to sender".

One of those returned one was because this user has the simbol & in his name and this messed up with his e-mail address.

Other issue was the reminder message is kind of messy, some characters like \r\n\r\n are showed between the words.

Just a tip: Why not include a field like on settings like: Send a Test Reminder to:
This way you could click "sent" the the e-mail you inform and system sent it as a test to the address you give, this way you can check the system and check also how good is your message.

1) The product would not install into vB 3.7.2 PL2 until I adjusted the 'maxversion' to 3.7.3.

2) I have at the moment 33,378 users registered and the Mod decided that 29,727 users were inactive. This is with setting the inactive period to 90 days. That seems way too high a ratio?

for the moment I've disabled the Mod until you can check that the coding is correct. I hate to think our forum is that quiet!

Add a email message filter
This is the hard part. You need to set up a filter that will 'pipe' an email sent to the above email address.
I am using Cpanel 11 and this is how i have mine set up:
Rules: 'To' 'Equals' 'bounce@icora.co.uk'
Actions: 'Pipe to program' with the setting: |/usr/local/bin/php /home/icora/public_html/forum/bounce.php

yes. the functionality will be there, but if you dont set up the filter then it will never get used. the reminder emails will still go out as normal.

I have installed Email Reminder, activated it and the following stats are returned:
Total inactive users: 11697
-of which accept admin emails: 11566
Inactive users left to contact: 11476
Users that have been sent the maximum emails(2): 11536

but no mail has been sent. The email sending from forum normally works, but not with this product. Any idea about the cause of this issue?

I am using the mail feature that vb provides - in earlier versions, i was using the mailqueue but inserting it directly as the vbmail function doesn't allow for html. I have however overcome this problem, and now use the vbmail fully now in my latest version.

The reason i didn't add a switch, was because i didn't see the need to do so. if you are not using the bouncing system, there is no harm in the emails having the headers in, and i would never advise not to use the bouncing system anyway, as this mod generates a LOT of emails, which some servers may consider spam if a lot of your emails are bouncing.

and finally - it will be possible shortly to use the $username variables in the subject. i am currently developing the mod for vbulletin 3.7x and once that is working i will convert it to 3.6x for you.

i am getting the following error when i send a test mail

"Admin Hash Mismatch"

i have not setup the 'bounce' feature (VB is on the intranet, i know 100% of all emails used are active and legit)
users do not get sent an email even tho it says it has been processed

In your mod you have two different messages for inactive users, right ?
I wonder your idea was change the messages for not to look as a regular spam and those should alternate from the first to the second, right ?

OK, the first one is sent perfectly but the second one is marked as junk by hotmail and spam by others. Only with the second one.
I notived the sender of those e-mail are kind of messy, It show admin e-mail writen twice and probably spam system are marking them because they consider it as an invalid e-mail address.
Funny but only on second message.

From what you describe, there is something in your vB setup that is causing vB to be confused into thinking that the 'user' that clicked the submit button is different from the 'user' to which vB is being instructed to send the results. That's a no-no and a no-go.

vB thinks that it is being told to send the results of your action to a different user than the one that initiated the action.

That could be:

Because you're logged on in another browser (window) as a different user and vB is getting confused,

OR: you have cookies turned off or blocked by a firewall somewhere in your network,

OR: maybe you have cookies disabled and you have a multi-homed IP configuration so that vB sees two or more different IP addresses for your session[s],

OR: some other bit of unusual configuration in your setup -- repeat emphatically, your particular setup.

The content of the error message you are receiving combined with the fact that [apparently] no one else is getting this problem seems to point to it being a configuration &/or routing issue someplace inside your system.

Good luck! Please post if you figure it out so that others who run into it will be helped.

yeah that's my problem too, members are sending me mails that they get tired from the mass mails of reminders that they receive form the board. it is set to sent out 1 mail and then another one after that but sometimes people got 15 mails a day........... :confused:

I'm assuming you meant 3.82 of vBulletin, not 3.28.

First, make sure you have the latest version of this add-on: version 1.27. If that still won't import, do the following:


Open the XMIL product installer file (e.g., product-remindermail.xml).
Near the top, around line 10, find this line:

Change that line to read:
<dependency dependencytype="vbulletin" minversion="3.7.0" maxversion="3.999" />

When I click on reports it shows me all my inactive users (1500). Does it means the system already sent an email to them? ..or the reports only show my inactive users and not the emails that was sent? Hope the system didn't sent email to them already because I set only 10 emails per day.

Problem is for some reason this mod was sending tons of the same reminders for the same user at the same time and it was killing my server load.
This problem was already reported by several users here and so far none plausible cause or solution were given to.

This used to be the most important mod I used to have on my boar and have to uninstall it due this issue. It's too bad not getting any support for so long.

I installed this mod, uploaded both files and plugin OK, but then i get a blank page in the menu settings.... ?

And this might sound weird, but when i have this mod activated, and try to register on my forum using register.php page (all cookies cleaned, IE TEMP files, and forms also), the fields username and email will be already filled up with a random user from my database (?) ? ?

It acts just like i had previously submitted those usernames/emails and IE memorized those, but i never did...
If i close the browser and open again register page, i get another username from my db and another email.....
If i disable hack and try to register, everything is fine!
I'm confused...

Just tried to install it to 3.8.4 and got error message that it's only for boards running at least 3.6 and not 3.7 or greater...

So...

...any plans or other hacks as good as this one, for 3.8.4 ?

Same problem here...

Though I got older versions (installed while running on 3.6.x) running just fine under 3.8.x
But I'd like to update that one since it appears to send out double mails.

EDIT: Guess I'll simply edit out the max version of the XML see what happens if I install it.

That's what you do. It works fine for 3.84.

I understand that this mod creates an inactive user group. Can anyone tell me if this is visible to the forum at large? For example, where someone's name appears, will it say "inactive user" underneath? I'd rather this wasn't the case.
