So if I have 10,000 inactive e-mails and choose to send 50 e-mails, what happens to the other 9,950? Do they not get a mail? Or does it go in spurts? Or what?
Looks great btw! :)

It would send 50 at a time according to the schedule you set up in ACP | Scheduled Tasks.

CB,
As mentioned in another post when I run it from a test forum the "From" in the email I receive is fine. However, when sending from my live forum the email "From" is blank. Also, that email shows all the control characters too. I have checked the settings in the live forum and they seem to be ok. So, why would the email I get from the live forum have a blank "From"? Thanks!
After importing and installing the plugin it sent out the emails even before I had a chance to look at/edit the settings in the admincp.
What am I missing?
Thanks!

You're not missing anything.
The defaults for the cron job are (1) active/on and (2) send reminders out every minute.
These should probably be changed in the product xml.

Been watching for a short while, but today I installed this mod on my test forum - looks quite nice.
BUT I ran into a snag (I can hear the sighs already...). For testing purposes, I set the mod to base inactivity on last post, not last visit. I then changed the frequency, etc to **---- so that it would be constantly (as I understand it) watching and sending, watching and sending.
I then went to "Scheduled Task Manager" and manually ran the mod. Checked the log, and sure enough it sent an email out to me and the other test user account.
Unfortunately, when I checked my email, I received two copies of the same email with the same timestamp... The log shows only 1 email, but I received a duplicate. I have the usergroups for the mod set to 2,5,6,7 (registered users, mods, admin, and supermods - just for testing purposes). My test account only belongs to the Admin usergroup so it isn't an issue of multiple usergroups...
I also know it didn't send first as a regularly scheduled job and then a 2nd time from my manual run as the CRON log only shows emails being sent out once, and then the 2 following times I ran the CRON job manually it said there were no emails to send (which is correct).
Any ideas why I received dupe emails? I do NOT want this to happen to my users. :/
FYI I have read this entire thread. :)

There are TWO settings in the options for this add-on:
1. Days of Inactivity
How many days a user can go without posting before they are considered inactive.
2. Email Frequency
How often to send a reminder email once a member has become inactive - set this to how many days you want to wait before sending out another reminder to that member.
GBSteve

djbaxter,
was that directed to my post? I'm aware of the two settings. My problem is that running the CRON task created TWO emails with the same timestamp yet only 1 entry in the log file. If they were both legitimate emails, I'd have seen two entries in the log.

A great mod but I think the above needs much better explanation in the Admin panel. I set this low thinking that it was the number of emails sent out to a member, and I've had lots of disgruntled users as a result and I didn't now why!
Now I do and I've corrected it, but beware everyone you could PO your users if you set it too low.

How do we limit the number of emails that are sent? I've received 3 on my account now, I can imagine people are getting annoyed with 3 emails in the last 2 weeks.
I made the same mistake as above.

I'm not sure that's a ptroblem with this add-on. I believe there is a known bug in recent versions of vBulletin where the mail system sends out intermittent multiple emails. On one large forum (not my own), I have received as many as 4 with the same timestamp (notifications of replies to a thread) and even on my own I periodically receive two or occasionally three.

I agree. Chris, the author, did explain this in an early post in this thread but I agree it's worded in a confusing way.

That still doesn't make sense.

Set this to how many days you want to wait. So does it only send 2 notices?
That's how many days apart it will send the notice, but not how many total emails will be sent?

I believe that people with things like UserName[CLAN] might not be deliverable. I got the following message back:
A message that you sent contained one or more recipient addresses that were incorrectly constructed:
UserName[CLAN] <username@hotmail.com>: missing or malformed local part (expected word or "<")
This address has been ignored. The other addresses in the message were syntactically valid and have been passed on for an attempt at delivery.
It would also be nice if users could opt out from receiving the emails right from the email.

Once again I am noticing a slight problem. I added a new usergroup to the settings. The setting is 90 and 30 days. In this usergroup I added, out of the 12 users, 2 should have been sent the email. Based on days of inactivity and "Receive Admin Emails" set to yes. According to the task log, no emails were sent............

There is no setting for "total number of emails". If you want the frequency to be very low, set it to something link 365 days.
It would also be nice if users could opt out from receiving the emails right from the email.
That's easily done from the options in your ACP. Just add it yourself, as I did:

<p>You can now keep up to date with new topics at $bbtitle by subscribing to the Forum Newsletter. Or, they can email the admin by clicking reply and request it be done for them - which does happen and which takes only a minute from the ACP.

It takes the settings from your forum options - "From: " . $vbulletin->options['bbtitle'] . " Reminder Service <" . $vbulletin->options['webmasteremail'] . ">" so if these are not set, then this may be the cause of the problem.

you can disable it in the options. thanks for your support in crediting the author.
as for the duplicate emails - i have no idea. there is only one mail command, and with that, one log command.
if it logged it, it mailed it.
the user is updated and should not be sent another email until the conditions specified in the settings are met

I just don't like some people's attitudes to showing credit. I gave the option to remove it because it is down to the forum owner what they have on their forum, and that's up to them, but it pisses me off when people come on here and that is there only comment - "how do i remove the credit?", not a "thank you for a good mod."
just remember, any members this mod brings back, are because of ME. that's right, ME. not any of you. so just remember that, anyone coming on this thread demanding removal, or making comments on the tag at the bottom.
99% of the people that use this give their support, and that makes me feel good.

Nice mod. And you do deserve credit for putting this one together and offering it up here. Clicks INSTALL.
BTW..is there a way to ensure that it does not send to any member more than X number of times? I can see if a member gets this reminder every 3 days or every 30 days until he makes it stop by going into the UserCP to stop admin emails it might rub some members the wrong way. WAsn't sure if this was built in somewhere yet on this or just a possible feature for future upgrade.
Again nice work :)

try running it a few times - the code selects from all users before it checks their usergroup - if you up the quantity to something ridiculous just to test it, im sure it will send out emails to the expected members.

If you set the email quanity to 500 and have 5000 inactive users does that mean only 10% get an email? If the frequency is set to 180 does that mean in 6 months only the original 500 will get an email and the other 4500 ignored? Or does it send to all 5000 but just 500 at a time during each cron?

ALL inactive users will get emails, sent out 500 at a time.
The frequency (180 in your example) does not refer to how often emails are sent out but rather to how long before a second or subsequent email is sent out to the same member.

i'd really like to use this mod on my live forum versus my test forum, but yet again i went in to play with it today...
not only were no emails sent out to the test account for the past week (nor were there any attempts at the log shows zilch), but when i manually ran the task it once again sent me 2 identical emails... same timestamps, same headers, same content.
i think this mod would be spectacular if it worked on my forum. i see others are having no problem so what gives? i also see from info on the email when i check via webmail, but when i download the email to my Outlook email client there's no from info and the email is displayed as plain text versus the rich text i see in my webmail client.
C Braithwaite, any support you can offer would be of huge assistance. I know you said you basically just didn't know why it was doing it but any troubleshooting guidance would be immensily helpful.

1. check to see if you have rich text / html enabled in Outlook - it may be set to off by default, depending on your version
2. check to see if your ISP or antivirus program or antispam program is stripping anything out of your email by default

Find in remindermail.php:
$headers = "MIME-Version: 1.0" . "\r\n";
$headers .= "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" . "\r\n";
$headers .= "To: $username <$email>" . "\r\n";
$headers .= "From: " . $vbulletin->options['bbtitle'] . " Reminder Service <" . $vbulletin->options['webmasteremail'] . ">" . "\r\n";
Change:
$headers .= "Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" . "\r\n";

This is either a problem with your email server or with your email client. If you are not set up to send and receive HTML / rich text emails, you can't do it with this add-on either.
And since the add-on uses the email address set in your vBulletin configuration, it would suggest to me that either that isn't set correctly or your email server isn't configured correctly.
What happens with other emails sent by your forum? Like topic reply notifications?

But where to set the forum to send HTML emails. I thought i was also a hack, right?

Are you able to receive HTML emails from other sources in your email client? When your forum sends out other emails, are they plain text or HTML/rich text (do you see clickable links in your forum emails)?

What does the description say for the email frequency? It says how frequent emails are sent out. /another way of saying this is "how often" meaning, you have set the emails to be sent each and every day. If you wish users to not receive emails as often, then maybe you should increase this amount?
I've checked the logs and none have been sent out.
Maybe the conditions you have set in the settings have not been met? try running the plugin manually. Oh, and make sure it is turned on, and active as by default the plugin is disabled.

Read the thread!
Set your email frequency to something longer than 1. At that setting, it will try to send out emails to every inactive user every day.
Set it to something reasonable like 30, or 60, or 90 (days). Or longer if you wish.

I am not using a mail client but gmail & yahoo for testing as most of the users have it. To best of my knowledge vbulletin is sending non-html mails by default. There is a hack here in vB.org to make it send HTML mails. What i'm asking is will I need this hack for making this work?

Would this do it?
Find:

$vbulletin->db->query_write("UPDATE " . TABLE_PREFIX . "user SET emailDate = '$now' WHERE lastactivity < '$datetime[lastpost]' AND emailDate < '$datetime[lastemail]' LIMIT $quantity");
Change to:
$result = $vbulletin->db->query_read("SELECT * FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "user WHERE lastactivity < '$datetime[lastpost]' AND . TABLE_PREFIX . "usergroup != 20 AND emailDate < '$datetime[lastemail]' LIMIT $quantity");

that is something i never thought of - i will update that in the php later today. cheers
Well guys, I really loved this hack thanks Braithwaite! and thanks djbaxter for your help...
I ve installed this hack last week. I ve just noticed that it still sends e-mails to the banned users...
what should I do? Banned usergroup is 8 in my board and I didnt add them in the AdminCP where it says:
List the usergroups that you wish to send the emails to here. (Seperate by commas) eg. 2,3,4,7
the remindermail.php which I ve got from you is like this:
$result = $vbulletin->db->query_read("SELECT * FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "user WHERE lastactivity < '$datetime[lastpost]' AND emailDate < '$datetime[lastemail]' AND options & 16 LIMIT $quantity");
$vbulletin->db->query_write("UPDATE " . TABLE_PREFIX . "user SET emailDate = '$now' WHERE lastactivity < '$datetime[lastpost]' AND emailDate < '$datetime[lastemail]' AND options & 16 LIMIT $quantity");
how are we gonna fix this?

What I was asking you about was what other settings could there be where email would not get sent? Should I ask that question in the other forum for general questions?
maybe it is just a case of you dont have any inactive users?
the code works like this:
Find inactive users based on last visit/last post
Check previously returned inactive users against usergroups
Check aforementioned inactive users for receive admin email settings
if a users is considered inactive, is a member of specified usergroups, and has selected to be sent admin emails then an email will be sent.
if any one of the previous is not true then an email will not be sent.
if you increase the quantity, it is more likely to send emails out.
It is sending e-mails to the banned users :) thats why I ve asked for your help...
there is nothign wrong with thequoted code - the usergroup checking comes later.
make sure your users which are banned are not part of any other usergroups.
the code will check each member against the list of usergroups specified, and if they are a member of that usergroup then they will be sent an email. it uses vbulletin's is_member_of function.

try reinstalling, as it is supposed to be in the options.
to the best of my knowledge the product file is formed correctly, and so should install properly. maybe an error on your board? Check the task log to see if emails have been sent, and if it's in the task list. im sure that it's set to be off by default, but cant remember for sure now.

Yes, very easily.
Open reminderemail.php. Find:
$headers .= "To: $username <$email>" . "\r\n";
$headers .= "From: " . $vbulletin->options['bbtitle'] . " Reminder Service <" . $vbulletin->options['webmasteremail'] . ">" . "\r\n";
Add after:
// add EZBounce headers
$bounceurl= $vbulletin->options['ezb_admincpurl'] . "/ezbounce.php?u=" . $userid;
$bouncestring= "<a href=\"$bounceurl\" target=\"_blank\">$bounceurl</a>";
$headers .= 'X-EZbouncer: ' . $bouncestring . $delimiter;
Edit:
The last line above is word-wrapping for some reason. It should be:
$headers .= 'X-EZbouncer: ' . $bouncestring . $delimiter;
Upload remindermail.php to your ./includes/cron/ directory.

djbaxter

Right after the install for anyone who has been inactive for at least 7 days.
That may be a tad short for most forums, though. I'd suggest more like 60-90 days. You don't want to annoy your members.

I have a question about the options...
With "Days of Inactivity" you have this as the description:
How many days a user can go without posting before they are considered inactive.
And then an option closer to the bottom is "Inactivity based on last post" with the description of:
Set the inactivity based on the last post made by the user. If set to no, the inactivity will be set by the last activity field (ie, when the member last visited)
So...is the first question going off of the last time they posted? Or the last time that they were on the board? I would like it if it was the last time they were on the board since I have a lot of lurkers which the "welcome" mod should take care of them if they want to ever post. I just don't want to bother members that are on the site and just decide not to post...
Thanks for this mod tho! It's great. I'll be sure to keep the footer ad on my site for ya ;)

If you select time since last activity, "days" are calculated fromm last activity, not last post.
joeychgo, I'd suggest you check your email server. It's sending in HTML/rich text as far as I know. The only way I can see users getting different emails is if you edited the default email and one got it before the edit and one after.

How many days a user can go without posting before they are considered inactive. 30
How often to send a reminder email once a member has become inactive. 30
List the usergroups that you wish to send the emails to here. (Seperate by commas) eg. 2,3,4,7
2,26,32,37
Set the inactivity based on the last post made by the user. If set to no, the inactivity will be set by the last activity field (ie, when the member last visited) Yes.
You're credited, etc.
Thanks.
Maybe you just dont have inactive users? Providing the plugin is running and saying "No emails to send" then as far as im concerned everything is working okay. it uses simple conditionals.
When i wrote the plugin description, the plugin worked only from lastpost activity, and you didn't have the option. I forgot to update the descriptions when i gave users the choice.

jap got the same problem as joeychgo
it's plain text with htmltags throughout the text. barely readable :(
and no, it's not a client issue, because other htmlmails do work
Ditto here - Installed and working, but the emails are in plain text with html tags. Looking at the source of the message, I can see it is sending with
MIME-Version: 1.0" . "\r\nContent-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" . "\r\nMIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
Thus, the email readers are quite correctly displaying it as plain text, despite the html tags in it.

Show footer link?
Places a small footer link on your forum to give credit and a link to the author of this add-on.
Add credit to emails sent
That's an alternate option to give credit to the author - for those who whined about the footer link, Chris made it easy to remove the footer link and added an option to place the link in the emails sent out by the add-on instead.

Having read through most of the posts for this mod, it does seem this is not as straight forward as it seems. I installed this yesterday and got the same results an many other people who posted.
It logs the email as being send the schedual task log, it show them as sending if this is run manually - the problem is it does not send the emails.
Does this require the SMTP option to be configured, or can this work using the normal PHP methods.
I am trying to get this to work on 3.6.5 and dont have SMTP configured with in VB options.
I would if anybody knows the exact config of any users who got it working.
I wounder if this depends on the forum name as it uses the name as part of the FROM address.
Any ideas, I would like to help in getting this one sorted out, as this is an automatic way of keeping my forums alive.

The problem is the use of the vBulletin mail system, not whether it's SMTP or PHP. Earlier versions actually worked very well. Someone suggested using the vBulletin mail-system and it seems in switching to that something went awry.
Chris, perhaps as a temporary fix, you could repost version 1.09 as a an optional download?

You can't.
Set "Days of Inactivity" to something reasonable, like 30 minimum - 60 or 90 better.
Set "Frequency" to something reasonable, like 30 minimum. This isn't the number of emails to send out - this is the number of days to wait before sending out another "nag". You have it set to nag your members every 2 days - no wonder they're getting annoyed.

For you guys that are having issues with members possible reporting this as spam. You should really include a message in the email stating that:
If you have received this email it is because you have elected to "allow this site to contact you via email. If you would like to opt out of future contact from this site, you can change your notification options here: <a href="$forumurl/profile.php?do=editoptions">$forumurl/profile.php?do=editoptions</a> and uncheck the box next to "Receive Email from Administrators." This is a great mod, brought back quite a few new members. But having a couple of small problems.
I installed this last night, but did not set it to active. Woke up this morning and it had sent emails out anyway.
Now I go to try and send it to other usergroups and i get the no inactive members message.
You might also want to reword, or add more description to the frequency part. I too thought it meant how many times to email them, and I had set it to 1.
GreeceMonkey
04-11-2007, 03:16 PM
I think this is a really good mod, it has many more possibilities.
I was thinking of ways we can monitor the activity of people that do come back
1) If they stay perminantly or for a long time
2) if they just disapear again after a few weeks.
Is this mod tied into the receive email options in the profile ?
I was wondering if we can take this one step further, and create a new user group for people that have gone. Such as a 'gone away' user group, and put them back into there original group as a secondary user group, when they come back.
I would be very interested in monitoring the activity of these people that do come back. I cant think of another way of still keeping the original group, as there last activity will be current when they come back.
This may be possible in a manual type way, but I think it is important to monitor the long term progress of the gone away people.
Great mod as it is though.

If you had bopthered to read the thread, you'd already know the answer to this.
You have NOT "set this to send out emails only once". You have set it to send out emails every day.
Change the value for "Frequency" to something more reasonable, like 30 (days) or 60 or 90.

Well this modification sounded good until I installed it and realized that it puts a link to the modder's website in the footer. I really don't like that ...so I disabled the product.

You mean to tell me that's why they have the "Search This Mod" pull down up top? :rolleyes:
I'm sorry. You're right, of course. What was I thinking? That you might actually take the time to find the answer for yourself? I mean, I know that your question has in fact been previously answered in this thread at least a dozen times, but why should anyone expect you to do any of the work yourself?
I hope you can forgive me for my social gaffe... :rolleyes:

It's called a "search" and it's here for that reason. It's like some of you people are afraid to do a little work for the answers. A little kindness goes a long way, people. These are FREE modifications!!! WTF?! All these authors have day jobs, and are doing this in their SPARE time. There's no reason to be rude.
They never claimed there was...you're the one who said it. Setting the frequency isn't that difficult...there's two places in your AdminCP...in vBulletin options and Scheduled Task Manager.
I don't see where RDX1 was rude. YOU seem to be the rude one.
Btw, using the search doesn't always work.
You need to check your attitude at the door.
Thanks.

Another one who can't read or who is too lazy to read... and this one has the audacity to suggest that some else has an attitude problem... :rolleyes:
Don't like the add-on? Don't install it. Nobody here will mourn your loss.
Don't like the footer link? The add-on contains an option to delete it... but of course you don't read instructions so you missed that... :rolleyes:
Let me be blunt here: Sometimes the explosion of lazy "gimme gimme and don't expect anything in return" morons on this planet over the past couple of decades fills me with despair for the future of our species. :mad:

Let's drop the whole thing and stay on topic, use the search function period!

More false accusations of rudeness. I was NOT rude at all. Its called "constructive criticism".
Don't like the add-on? Don't install it. Nobody here will mourn your loss.
Did I even suggest that I don't like the add-on? No. I DID however state that I don't like one specific aspect of it ...and I have a right to do so. I was not rude about it.
Don't like the footer link? The add-on contains an option to delete it... but of course you don't read instructions so you missed that... :rolleyes:
The "instructions" to remove the link is a JOKE. Heres what the "instructions" say: "You have the option to remove the link via the admincp". Now if thats what you call "instructions" ...then your mommy dropped you on your empty head one too many times when you were a baby.
Let me be blunt here: Sometimes the explosion of lazy "gimme gimme and don't expect anything in return" morons on this planet over the past couple of decades fills me with despair for the future of our species. :mad:
Now let ME be blunt: You and your little crony (deezelpope) need to take some mydol and change your tampons ...because your pre-menstrual attitudes are nauseating. It has nothing to do with laziness. I read and re-read everything ...and there are no REAL instructions for removing the link from the footer. Also, RDX1 is right, you shouldn't jump somebody for not reading through hundreds of posts. Just because you're coders doesn't mean that YOU are the only ones who have a lot of other things to do and don't have a lot of time to work with. Get off your high horse and grow up. Being a jerk will get you nowhere.
EDIT: I found the option to remove the footer link. I guess I missed it when I investigated the options for this add-on. My mistake ...but you still need to handle things more maturely. Calling people names and insulting them is not the way to handle criticism.

You don't like the mod. We get it. Move on.
You can't understand the instructions, even though they're written in straightforward English. We get that too. Move on.

I like the mod. Where did I say that I DON'T like it? Not once did I say that.
An oversight is not embarrassing. You're the one who should be embarrassed ...due to your lack of maturity.
You learn how to be civilized and I'll move on. Thanks.

Thanks for the defense Chachacha. This is one of the exact reasons I don't feel like spending 25 minutes reading through every post for all of the hacks I have installed. Unlike some people that may or may not post in these threads, I don't have the time or mindset to argue with children.
Also it seems that the modification has also stopped working since I upgraded to 1.10. I thought upgrading would fix the problem I was having, atleast know that I know what the problem was I may revert back. This hack has increased user activities, been getting 1,500-2,000 more posts a day due to it and 150+ more active members.

rar.. too many arguments.
okay. vBulletin does not send out HTML emails, so all emails need to be sent out in plain text - im sure this isn't a problem for most as it's only reminder. sorry to anyone who is sending out super fancy html rich reminders. I will somehow sort out the html, but that may be a case of creating a separate plugin. I dont know.
Since the update the plugin is still working, however it is working in a different manner. It only runs once per day, at 1 minute past 1am, and then adds all of the messages to the mail queue.
It is then down to the vBulletin mail system to send out the emails.
I will make minor modifications to the product for the default template.

the problem you will probably be having is the frequency. set the inactivity period to 30 days, and then once they have been inactive for 30 days then they will get 1 email. then if you set the frequency to 60 days, they will be sent the email every two months after that. or you could set it to 7 days to have them sent an email every week once they have become inactive.

Installed version 1.11.
I get the following error when I try to run it manually.

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /path/to/forum/includes/class_mail.php(261) : eval()'d code on line 12

Same here.
What seems to have caused the problems is the switch to the vBulletin mail queue system starting in version 1.10. I'm not sure it's worth it.
I've gone back to 1.09 myself.

But thanks v1.10, before v.1.09 there's always problem with email sending. After update to 1.10, everything goes well.
Now it has stopped working since upgrading to 1.11, I'm going back to 1.09 as well.

Chris, why not revert to just sending out emails as you did prior to 1.10? There were other bug fixes in 1.10 and 1.11, I think but if you just change the "sendmail" parts that might solve it all.
If nothing else, it will eliminate one variable as the possible problem.

What does that mean? Many of the emails my forum sent out to inactive users bounced. That's because those email addreses are no longer valid.
and i had a hard time updating..my email works fine.
What does this mean? Updating involves just two steps: Upload the PHP file and import the product as "overwrite".

I don't know. That's why I asked for more detailed information.
How many were sent out? How many bounced? How long has it been since those members signed in? Do you use email verification for registrations? What did the bounced emails say (what was the error)?
Unless you are specific in your questrions, you can't expect a helpful answer.

Mrdby, that information tells me nothing.
Look at the information returned with the email. It will tell you WHY the email bounced.
For example, even with valid email addresses, emails do sometimes bounce because:
1. there is a problem with the ISP mail server - this seems to happen intermittently especially with AOL, Yahoo, and Hotmail
2. the mailbox is full
3. the mailbox is temporarily unreachable
4. you have hit a spam filter that is blocking your email
5. other reasons that will be specified in the returned email
A list of member names tells me nothing.
thing is..when i installed it..i guess i got a daily email or something. I never sent off any emails.
The emails are sent out automatically. That's what the add-on does. Check your options for the mod under vBulletin Options from the ACP.

Oo WOW, so many arguments in the past days, i think this mod whould revert to 1.0.9 and then use the new as a Beta release, so anyone upgrading be aware it's a beta and might not work properly.
Also, back to 1.09 ^^,
