vBt is strictly the site for template questions so even if it takes a while to reply this is not the place for these kind of questions buddy Nevertheless.... if you want to make that the background of your categories for example just copy the example on a default vB3 and delete the gradient image and upload your gray.gif renaming it to the one vB3 uses

In conclusion you just need to play in the CSS editor. There's a more comprehensive tutorial in the vB manual

If you're using vB2 then put this as your category background color:

#somehex" style="background: url({imagesfolder}/grey.gif);

Make sure you upload the grey.gif to your imagesfolder and change #somehex to a color which is close to grey (e.g. #CCCCCC)
