What chat system does vBulletin.org use? And is it possible i can get it onto my board?

They use IRC as best I remember..

The actual chat itself is hosted kindly by the guys over at devcore. If you're familiar with IRC you can connect to it using this link: irc://irc.devcore.co.uk/vborg

The applet itself is jIRC with a custom skin

you don't have to afford one. You can use any public server. Some of them allow your users to register their name, too.

Yep, you just need to find an (active) server which allows channel/user registrations
