Er, isn't this kind of an ironic thing to say on site where all use the exact same forum script?
Not at all. Using the same forum script is much different than copying a site. Don't you think?
At any rate, I don't think the op was looking to clone the site anyways. I think he just wanted to use some aspects which is cool. At first glance though from the title it appeared the idea was to "do my site like this". lol

It doesn't change the fact that they have alot of optimization work to do and that it is proven, slow loading does hurt the bottom line. Article on that here.
Here's their vBulletin installation test by the way, it's a 4.1.4 and it is terrible - not for glut, but for loading. Three test attempts and never could get it to not time out, using IE 11.
To the OP - Richie has a great point about being a "me too" or a copycat. You most especially don't want to copy the bloat!
Honestly I visit that site almost on a daily basis and I really never noticed any loading time issues. It always seems fairly quick to me but then again I am not running a test on it, just going to the site.
I agree about not copying the bloat because most average hosts or servers would probably not handle it so well.

You never know! You just could turn out to be the BB.com of dreadlocks! Now that would be cool!

Right and, your browser caching it is why what we see when we load a site on our computers is subjective. It's "fast" because you have alot of its elements cached.

oh crap, that means my site must be really flippin slow to people on it for the first time! There would be no way of me knowing

My point is, "copying" something we see on someone else's site is pretty much what we did the first time we saw someone using vBulletin and decided to get one of our own.

As a webmaster, I'm sure you have installed more than one browser for testing purposes. While you probably use one on a day to day basis, use another one for testing such stuff. Make sure you clear the cache before doing speed tests.
