Yes, that changes the default notification. If you want to change them individually, you would have to do so in the user manager.

Hmm, that isn't quite what I'm after then as it will only notify for message replies weekly(?)
As I say, I was after an eamil note when a new thread is posted.... |

Well, there were several options in the dropdown. Weekly was one, but Instant and Daily were also there.

Hmmm, this is an area I've never really dealt with... Perhaps you want the users to be subscribed to each of the forums? One particular forum? You could post a notice telling users how to subscribe to the forum - even put in a link (x is the forum) for easy subscribing:
