I'm wanting to do something similar (but not quite the same! :) )

I've just set up a new forum, and to encourage people to use it I wanted to send a notification to all users when a new thread is posted.

I'd leave this in place just until it starts to take off a bit - it's one of these niche forums for staff in a specific sector so doesn't have the draw of, say, a gaming forum or the like.

I've got people registering, I just want to use the notification to encourage people to visit the site regularly until it becomes a habit for them.

Any ideas if it could be done?

@RoyT, your idea will just do the opposite... people visit the internet when they want, they do not want to be bothered in their email each time something is posted, we call this spam...

let them visit your site, and add interesting content, they will come back.

nexialys is correct. You don't want to e-mail them too often. There are mods that e-mail inactive users (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthrea...180025&page=10) to remind them to come visit. Just be sure you don't use it too often, or like nexialys said, it'll turn people away.

I understand the point of view guys, but actually it's a feature we already use on a private sharepoint site and have found quite useful.

As I intimated above, this isn't a general public forum it's for a fairly select group of people but they're not very active as an online community, so we're just looking for ways to encourage it a bit.

Of course, there should come a day when the content creates the traffic, but we're a little way off that - it's what comes of having shy users I think :D

You'd be more likely to garner interest with a weekly newsletter with a list of the posts. Receiving an email every time something was posted would generate more than just a little hostility IMO. This is why so many people use "throw away" email accounts to register on websites.

RoyT 05-05-2009 01:14 PM

I guess we're a special type of user demographic then - honestly there will be no hostility to this, nobody uses throwaway accounts, there's no resistance to receiving it at all.

Your idea of a weekly email update might also work too, albeit in a else immediate way... I think you guys are making assumptions about the userbase that don't really apply in my specific case :D

I sense though that this isn't an easy thing to do, as you're all trying to talk me out of it :)

OK, you've been warned, so....

For new users, you can go to vboptions > registration options > automatic thread subscription mode and set what you want there.

For current users, you can go to maintenance > execute sql query > pick the subscription you want from the dropdown list.

RoyT 05-05-2009 02:52 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong Lynne - doesn't that allow me to change someones default notification to be, for example, weekly? This would then stop them getting Instant Notification wouldn't it?
