The 2008 Beijing Olympics would be a stab in the heart of communism by expanding capitalist ideas and by giving the people of China a real taste of what their lives can be with money and the kind of cooperation and trust it takes to be in this World today. Of course there will be protests to stop the progress of China.

I should say is a matter of principles, I'm not fond of the Dalai Lama, but in fact they invaded the Tibet.

Dang! and it was a HUGE country, bigger than many European States, there's nothing honorable on oppressing a pacific country.

Different perspectives. As my Cherokee Grandpa would say, no US citizen has a right to say anything about Tibet until they force the US government to honor the THOUSANDS of broken treaties with the several native nations of the continent including the Cherokee - whom the US government under Andy Jackson marched 1,500 miles to relocation in Oklahoma killing more than half their number along the way.

And the Tibet situation as been going on longer than the US has existed, so don't give me any crap about the US oppression of the native american tribes being irrelevant.

Just out of curiosity, what would you have the US do for the Cherokee (and other) tribes at this point?

You can't unscramble an egg. Further there's no equitable solution that's going to fit in any post I could type up in under 4 hours and 5000 words, and I don't have that kind of time.

What I do know is acting holier than thou will not sway the Chinese in the slightest. The best policy is to encourage the growth of capitalism. The growth of a middle class will undermine and eventually cause the collapse of communism with time. As long as we do not isolate China and turn her into an enemy and a threat time is on our side and against the communists who control her.

But alas, impatience is the one flaw of democracy. Since our executive perforce changes ever 8 years we as a nation are rarely able to engage in policies that endure over decades. There are only two exceptions I know of - opposition to communism and the Manifest Destiny.

Bringing about democratic reform in China is not a project of months or years. It will take decades and a lot of small steps but it can be done if we have the patience and the will to see it through.
