the IOC will close the Relay instead of banning China...

What do you think ?!

is it before the China situation or before the protestants that the IOC have to act upon ?!

personally, i think that if China is not playing the same game as the Olympics, i don't see why the next games are there... the IOC could decide to move this summer's games to Barcelona or another location where the installations are present...

It is not the protestants that are the startup of the problem... the IOC does not have to stop all the activities surrounding the games because of that.. there was never be any protestation against the games, they are politicals, so the IOC have to decide to move the games to a different location where there is no political pressures... the Olympic spirit is broken due to China...

btw, this is the first thread about the Olympics for a long time... ;)

I still don't understand on what basis was China awarded the Olympics. Simply for the fact that China (among other countries) do not support any of the higher values promoted by the Olympic games.

This, as well as, the way things are managed by the IOC by being very unfair to a lot of countries out there, thus not supporting the message of bringing the world together. I quote:

"Olympics have been chosen to be held in 50 cities (including repeats) since its "rebirth", twice in Eastern Europe, 5 times in East Asia, once in Central America, and the remainder in Western nations. No African, South American, Central Asian, or South Asian nation has ever been chosen as host for the Olympics."

The two arguments are not necessarily mutually exclusive, in other words, not every totalitarian regime is in that region, and not every country in that region is a totalitarian regime.

I think is contradictory the way how China oppress Tibet [and Taiwan] and the spirit of the Olympics... It's a huge desicion, but yes I'm in favor of banning China from hosting the Olympics

I remember the Boycott from USA to Moscow '80, I was a kid but now I understand

I feel bad for the athletes.

The athletes only want to compete, and they train hard with a very limited career potential of maybe one Olympics.

The statement should have been made 8 years ago when the IOC was bought into choosing Beijing for the Olympics. The statement should have been made years ago By the major world players boycotting China financially.

Suffice it to say the hope that mere athletes are going to make the difference isn't enough. The world community needs to be the one to tell China that they have to change.

as for why china got the Olympics over other fore runners? my belief is that the corruption that the IOC was accused of before never went away. Money still reigned supreme. I was a big follower of the Olympic bid as one of the forerunners was my home town of Toronto Canada, and when the announcement was made it was quite shocking. I dont think Toronto needed it or should have won it, But to lose to a country and a place that is known for Genocide and some of the worste humanitarian issues of today, you know there is something foul at play

Earlier today in a pre-G8 press conference in Japan, President Bush defended his decision to attend the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. "The Chinese people are watching very carefully about the decisions by world leaders and I happen to believe that not going to the opening ceremony for the games would be an affront to the Chinese people, which may make it more difficult to be able to speak frankly with the Chinese leadership," the president said as he outlined the official justification for what might be termed Bush's Olympic Doctrine.
talking about non-sense...

Funny US is trying hard to extend a relationship with China despite human rights violations...
