You're only looking at possibly some minor template edits, if that. 3.8.8 has changes to the core php files for higher level php compliance than 3.8.7 has, native. This has nothing to do with styles....

It will likely come out of beta at some point. and 3.8.8 is supported just the same as 3.8.7. It literally only has security and php 5.4 fixes in it.
