I'm waiting for the Hotspot Edition, when it's released and judging by your screen shots, it's just what I've been after. I'll make a donation then :laugh:

because of privacy reasons one that wants to show on the map has to set his location.

I always advice to put it on a nearby landmark.

Geocoding via address is not supported for the same reason.

I think they have something custom made.

You'll find vbgooglemap member edition easy to use.

The hotspot edition will even go a lot further. This is planned for a seperate release soon here on vbulletin.org and will allow you to put unlimited categories, listings, detailspages, filters.

You can also use it for giving your users a small homepage as a full vbeditor is included.

markers.xml is showing and still the code looks as if the file isn't there (this can be seen if you use firefox)
it says it cannot find the marker xml element in IE

http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/markers.xml in firefox is empty. IE is more fault tolerant but there is something wrong with the xml setting on your server. Is full xml support enabled?

It might be a server side issue with encoding or incomplete php setup

How did you reenable xml support?

There is probably something wrong with that or posibly with a definition for xml files in the .htaccess.

I just installed this beautiful plugin but i have a problem. I can't see the "your entry" button (yes i am logged in!) How is it possible? I tried logging with different usergroup but the problem is the same. The button doesnt show itself and nobody cant add their coordinates.

Make sure you upload all the files including the bitfield xml

As you can see my marker is on there (belgium)

As you have a custom style you need to upload the buttons to that directory too. That should fix your problem.


Moreover I'll update the member edition this weekend so it uses the markers script I created for my hotspot edition which is a "click and forget" script.

Did you know btw that the hotspot edition features a small overlay navigation map you can activate from the admincp. That's a nice new feature in V2 API

well my site is growing but atm i only have 56 members..i wil keep the hotspot for when we get really big...which i know i will...not in the 1000's or anything but the high 100's i am positive and then i will need the HSE. so i will keep it just remove the link to it until then.............if stonyarc kindly integrates for us little guys ;)

That's why we have the small map to zoom on their location. The users doesn't have to know it.

I'm rebuilding the member edition so it uses the click and forget function the hotspot edition uses.

Stonyarc - great plugin. I am looking to hack it for my own site for a slightly different purpose.

I have a VB form that members can add lat & lon into 2 custom fields I have added. I want to use your map plugin to help them find their locations. I will only be using the main screen in a simplified format to do this. When the main map screen is loaded, what are the variable names that hold the dynamic X & Y co-ords that are displayed in the read only boxes at the top?

I have taken off all functionality apart from the ability to drag the map around and zoom in and out and have added a form button beside the latitude / longitude boxes using the following code:

Keep in mind that the vbgooglemap members edition will change a bit.

It will get more of the functions I created for the hotspot edition

besides that:

the actual lat/lng come from the googlemap table => written to XML and parsed client side. That's the way vbgooglemap currently works.

That will change too.

So the actual lat/lng is put in the xml by the CreateXML function. I you make your function write the needed values to that table you won't have to change a thing. Everything will work and will allow you to follow future upgrades too.

At the moment it stretches my forum, so I have had to manually edit the templates to shrink it. Would be much nicer as an admin option though ;)

That is indeed fully planned for the next release.

Just as the hotspot edition, the member edition will get a seperate settings table and admincp management page.

As in the hotspot edition the maptype will be set in the admincp

For now open the product xml and look for

map = new GMap2(document.getElementById("map"),{mapTypes:[G_NORMAL_MAP,G_SATELLITE_MAP,G_HYBRID_MAP]});

change this to

map = new GMap2(document.getElementById("map"),{mapTypes:[G_HYBRID_MAP,G_NORMAL_MAP,G_SATELLITE_MAP]});

That will fix it.

If you want the small map to do the same just change the second and third occurence too.

The bubble is because the bubble is loaded before the avatar, so that bubble isn't correctly sized if you click the marker again it should be ok.

The member edition allows only to show members that want to be on there. It shows a small quote, their avatar and their online status.

It's intended to show where you users live.

The HSE is a major extension to that in a sense that it allows you to put events, locations, places to visit, .... and if you want also members.

But on the HSE a location isn't linked to a user (except for the ID that submitted it).

HSE supports creating your own categories.

HSE has also listing pages with filters and allows you to give a full description too in wysiwyg. So that's ideal to describe a location or event.

The guides for the HSE and ME are downloadable in the threads.

Ah one more question.. your hotspot edition of the member map will this be integrated into this hack as well or will it always be a stand alone hack like now?

It's both in the Load_Map function in the vbgooglemap_display_map, vbgooglemap_set_yourlocation and vbgooglemap_display_yourlocation.

You can edit this in templates or in the product xml and reupload it (overwrite to yes).

As it stands now the member function is very different from the hotspot version.

However some of the "easy to use" functions I created for the hotspot will be included in the 2.5.0. of the member edition.

Mixing both isn't really an option at this point as some sites have already 600+ users on their maps. If you would load an additional 300 landmarks or events it will become a bit too crowded

VBseo kann eine Fehler verursachen.

Nice hack, Stoneyarc. I've set it up on our testforum, and had our mods take a look at it. The only points they weren't enthusiastic about you've already said would be in 2.5.0
Any idea of the timescale before release? If it's not long we can hold off going live for a while...

I think it will be released in 1 or 2 weeks. depending on how busy the rest of my life gets (and it's hectic).

Maybe I'll have a pre-release this weekend.

I use firefox as well.. i dindt get dat error.. and dat error is not cuz of the script its cus of ur firefox.. check ur settings.

You can take a backup of the data but it's not really needed as the uninstall doesn't remove the table from the database.

The script itself for positioning the markers is executed client side and not server side.

It might be an issue limited to your setup/version/internet speed.

I just uploaded a new version this version includes a "show on legend" function for the usergroups in the usergroup function where you set the marker colour.

That should allow you to hide special usergroups.

To install just download the files again. Upload everything and reinstall the product with overwrite to yes.

As indicated in the pdf file if you are running a custom style you need to upload the googlemapme images subdir to that specific style too.

You haven't completed step 7 or 8 of the installation.

It's the findme plugin in the postbit that is causing this.

just download the product again.

I changed the plugin with an error check so that it first looks if it knows the userid.

I also removed the duplicate entry for the usergroup table.

Product with overwrite to yes should fix the issue.

I think this is another error.

It means one of the alter tables has failed for some reason in the installation.

I'm testing the install on a clean version of vb again

Well it's because of the major difference between client side and server side processing.

The googlemap API requires you to create xml file which is processed client side by the scripts.

You can fake some stuff by setting it with php but bottomline remains the same.

Point is that currently onload of the map the xml-file is created or onchange of data.

To create a line in the xml file I need a query. If you have a whole lot of users that means a lot of queries.

That's what I'm working on. It's not so much a programming error but more a behaviour by design from the googlemap itself.

Google also says it that it's not build for 250+ but I have seen forums that are running my app 600+ and more. I keep tweaking the code javascript and php to make it as performant as possible and I am working on a more permanent solution with smart caching.

I already created part of those scripts for the xbox live integration I made for my site xboxusersgroup.com.

I think I have a solution for the queries.

I'm going to use the scheduled tasks available in vbulletin.

That will reduce the queries to normally 7 in total.

If scheduled once an hour to update to the last info that should be enough.

I can also trigger it on insert or on update so that almost always the latest information is displayed.

However the online status will no longer be available. Vbulletin has enough places where that can be handled.

Just download the zip again and overwrite to vbgooglemapme.php and it should be ok.

I was a bit too strict with the permission checking.

there is indeed a branding free option. There has been a lot of work in this project so the branding free option is currently set at a 30 EUR donation.

This allows you the remove the branding on the frontend. You cannot just replace it by your own copyright.

Glad it all works out

I'll release 2.5.1 later on today.

The xml creation has moved to a cron en the xml is in a seperate function file.

This reduces the number of queries on my testserver to 7 except on update of the file and on insert of a new marker.

This triggers a new file. 2.5.1 also includes all the quick fixes I released after 2.5.0 initial release.

This includes:

- hiding of the findme function if the user isn't on the map (currently already in 2.5.0 file too)
- performance
- SQL error on overwrite (currently already in 2.5.0 file too)
- too strict permission check on update of the own entry (currently already in 2.5.0 file too)

The rebuild a user at a time isn't really an option, as I have loads to do.

Also, an idea, I have all my users set as "registered", but those who donate get added to an additional group "donated" (but there primary is still registered users)

However the colour I assign to "donated" is never used, is there a way to make is use the additional grouping colours if a user is a member of one?

A lot of sites want the functions split.

But they are both build so that they can run both at the same time.

Also if you have a lot of users and hotspots it does tend to get crowded.

the update fixed my permissions problem but now on the main map the user markers are all gray, when you list them they are correct but not on the map :(. Also the online graphic marker has disapeared (the green dot).

Did you do step 10?

Otherwise just click "your entry" and click update it will force a reload.

That should fix it.

I'll make it so that a change in admin cp also is directly reflected on the mainmap (on todo list)

Just a question... is it possible for you to change the behaviour of the usergroup icons?

I have a hierarchy:

Primary groups
unverified members
verified members
insiders (with secondary groups:)
Game Admin
Moderator
User Admin So my Game Admins and Moderators and User Admins, all show up as the color of Insider group (because thats the primary group)... I would love you to use the "Display Usergroup" option of the user to choose which icon to show :)
(Display Usergroup is a setting that is either on Default, or on one of the groups that the member is member of...), it changes the usertitle to that group's title, the color of the nickname etc. etc. So it would be nice if your product would also make use of that very same function :)

There's support for marker colours in the admincp. Run the scheduled task afer you change it though.

I got rid of my usergroup legend and set my markers to all the same colour as it isn't needed on my forum. (I also edited the group legend out of the templates for "list users")

i added the scheduled task and ran it (more than one) but none of my users are showing up and my map is blank. what do i do?

The update of the usergroupid works only if they do the update.


in which case there definately needs to be a way to rerun the process, I cannot mail everyone who changes group and get them to re-edit their marker ;)

Overriding the colours? please elaborate?

As mentioned later on, if a user is also a member of a secondary group these marker settings should be used instead of the primary one. A good way to do this might be an option in the admincp that can set a markers priority (ie if the user is a member of more than one group, use the marker with the highest priority) :)
