I am using Google Maps as the Meeting Place Finder for the Body of Christ where apostles apoint elders to take care of Scriptural cities (e.g. church of Ephesus in churches of Asia Minor or the church of Fresno in the churches of California).
http://biblocality.com/forums/VBGooglemap.php
Is there an easy way to delete markers? If a user is deleted and they have a marker, how do you delete the marker also?
This is complicated, but this is what I need (making it all automated):
1) The integration I would like to see is with the questions answered when registering to the forum. To be able to put their marker on the map, they need to answer all 17 questions (see registration) with a YES in the User Profile.
2) Also, I would like a second set of 16 questions (after getting the first 17 questions correct) to be optional, but if the person answers all these with a Yes, and they say they are an apostle, then we have no reason to doubt them. They would be responsible for a region of churches like California or Montana or England or Germany, which they get a key code for it. A region would be like Alberta, Canada or Germany or California, etc, based on a reasonable size for apostles to travel from town to town appointing these elders for cities or remote areas.
3) Then I need to link (1) with (2) so that eventually only those in (1) that could put their marker on the map as a meeting place would be if the (2) apostles first gave them approval to do so by appointing the elders for the whole Biblical locality, and the elders who took care of that whole locality, would then appoint sub-elders in many meeting places within that locality. I would like to automate this whole process.
In order for a Biblical locality to be established and to get approval, out in the field, the apostle would tell the appointed elder(s) for that locality where to submit their locality (by coming to the forum and map) and be given a special key code. If that key code matched the key code the apostle was given for getting the 33 questions right, then this opens up the sub-elders (whom are those in 1 above) to be able to submit their meeting places under the elder for the whole locality. It is all founded on the apostles that agree in these 33 questions.
The map is only useful for the meeting places themselves, not for keeping track of the apostles for regions and the elders for each Biblical locality, unless there could be a set of markers for one level on the map of regions, another level of markers on the map for cities and another level on the map for meeting places within cities. Each meeting place needs to link to their respective elder for their Biblical locality and apostles for their reigion.
If any of this is not clear just ask. There is essentially 3 levels:
1) regional apostles (33 questions)
2) Biblical locality elders (at least 17 questions)
3) Sub-elders for the many meeting places in the Biblical locality

Is there a way that it can be done so that the new user at registration has to mark it on the map? Although i think it might be a lot of work :(

I've got a lot of themes on my site and in certain ones the map, satellite and hybrid legends aren't visible, i guess its to do with css , which part of the css controls the colour of those legends please??
tnx

My first attempt at helping out here, its a simple FAQ addition using the existing screenshots and wording. Easy to install just up the 4 images to forum/images folder edit one bit of the code from yoursite.com to the name of your website then copy and paste the html once you've created a new FAQ in Admin CP > FAQ manager.

Is there anyway to have this automatically enter a person when they register using their zipcode in their profile?
Also anyway for an avatar to display, when you move over the marker?

A Meeting Place Finder for the Church
Eventually it would be cool if the programming restricts anyone from entering their meeting place on the map if they don't have all 18 question right (under Edit Profile from registrating) and don't have a key code from an elder of that locality they are in.
http://biblocality.com/forums/VBGooglemap.php
As soon as someone answers all 33 questions (15 additional questions not at registration) as Yes, they would then be prompted with their interest in being an apostle (all automated). If they agreed to the prompt, they would then be told their responsibility, if they are truly commissioned by God, is to appoint elders for Biblical localities. They would receive a key code they should give to elders they appoint for the localities in their region.
We might not even need to keep track of any information on apostles (just their keycodes), since they will be out in the field doing their thing and those that respond back would inevitibly be not the elders, but the sub-elders of meeting places, since the elders would receive the key code from from the apostles, and the elders would give the key code to the sub-elders to submit their meeting places back at the Meeting Place Finder.
Sounds like fantasy I know, but these are the earliest of beginning days in what we are doing according to Biblical locality.
I hope the programmer sees this.

Anything new coming up?
I'd love to be able to rollover a pin and see the username.
Another nice thing would be able to click on the username and see their profile and homepage.
There's cash money in it. :)

I'm interested in this as well. I run an Offroad site and want to include pins for known offroad parks.
I tried some obvious text editing things that did not work. I added new lines and changed the username, text, and lat / long. those lines were deleted upon loading googlemap.php I added a new line and edited all fields but username, and those lines were also deleted on loading.
Although I hate to hack at the usernames table, I'm considering it.
forgot to mention...
I used http://www.zipinfo.com/search/zipcode.htm to get a bearing on a beginning lat / long. the site accepts zip+4 for US addresses. Once the Beginning lat / long and an appropriate zoom level is defined most users can easily set their marker.

hack looks good... cant wait for the zip code intergration... city/state/country would be nice but i think zip code is our biggest need since we're based in the US only.
thanks for all of your hard work and ill keep an eye outfor the zip code release!

I see this would be a "hot spots" option and your working on a new release, I look forward to it, any idea when itll be out?
But will this feature only work for a certain area? My website is area specific, dont really want information entered from other countries, states etc.

I just installed this wonderful hack today..... I am sure my users are going to absolutely love it if I can get it working properly. I am sure my problems are exactly that, but if anyone can help me get this fixed, I would really appreciate it.....
When not logged in, the balloon pops up with no user name, but the comment is there..... When not logged in, a click on the marker only re centers the map to that location, and no balloon pops up at all.......

update... I played around some more and figured out that the username text is there, just white on white, so that is an easy fix and will probably be done before you check it out.....
The other issue about logged in users not popping up is still the same.... but I checked Firefox, and logged in users balloon works there! .... strange....
Thanks in advance, Allen

Hello again,
I have played around with this quite a bit now and just can't figure it out... In Firefox 1.5.01 . everything works great.....
In IE 6.0.29 .... everything works fine for a non logged in user, but once logged in, clicking on the marker only re centers the map to that point.... no balloon popup at all.... Seems really strange that it works like this.... I tried from anothe computer with the same results.... Re booted, re installed, deleted cookies, closed window..... nothing seems to change it.....
Thanks, Lance

If someone adds their marker and then they get deleted from the forum, how do we remove the marker after that?
Answer: use phpmyadmin to remove the line for the googlemap databse.

Improvements needed:
- Someone who registers, but does not validate their email OR is not approved for posting or is banned should not be able to place their marker on the map. And when the person is banned or deleted, the marker should automatically disappear also.
- *** Also, if you have several questions that are required to be answered when registering, and if they are not answered correctly, the person should not be able to put their marker on the map. Though the person would be registered, yet since they did not give the right answer to the questions, they can not put the marker on the map.
Hi
I have tried to read all the 500 plus posts but could not find the answer
My question is --
Is there a way that all members could automatically be added through their ip address instead of them doing it themselves when they are online
I ve seen it on another forum
Once again sorry have tried to find the answer but my eyes have gone

Here it is: Simple googlemap (http://www.noblood.org/g.htm)

I ran VBGooglemaps just fine in IE and FF. Just want solve a simple problem first.

Great hack, Stonyarc :)
To bad, Belgium and the Netherlands aren't that detailled yet, but even so, it's a nice add on to our forum.
Thanks to all contributers to this thread for answering a lot of questions I had ;)
And thanks to Gizmo999 for the FAQ entry, that was very usefull.
Gonna follow this thread and hope the development will continue.
To add some value to this thread (i hope), here's another sollution to the text on te map buttons (Map, Satelite, Hybrid) that are not showing on boards that have a dark skin with white letters.
Add this to your style:
/* ***** class for vBGooglemap ***** */
.r_box { color: #000000; }
And the text shows. This is only valid in the style you put it in, so if you have more dark styles you'll have to repeat this for every style.
Offcourse you're free to choose another color than #000000 :)

Also, at present I am just testing on a link to vBGooglemaps.php instead of embedding it into the navbar. Could someone tell me exactly where in the navbar I should put the code?

A lot of my users are having problems with this, the pin doesn't locate to the location they set. rather than spend hours doing browser tech support on it I'd rather alter the location myself, I've found the markers.xml file but changing that doesn't update the pin so it looks like I must also alter the googlemap table in my database??
is anyone using this method to correct misplaced pins?? if so are there any problems doing it??

I've been trying to work out why my users keep screwing up their pins, reading the instructions it seems there is one small error
Welcome to the Member Map page. This feature is in beta development. To insert your entry just click on your entry and center the new map on your location. The latitude and longitude will change automatically. Don't forget to enter your user name to accompany your marker. For security we do not advise entering your exact location. Once entered clicking your entry will load an update page. If your marker doesn't show directly, just close your browser and restart it or clear your browser cache.
I think the correct way is to centre the location first, zooming to do so, then click "your entry" so it inputs the lat and long from the centre of the screen.
I'd suggest altering the default googlemap_intro phrase and adding the FAQ I posted earlier. Mine now reads
Welcome to the Member Map page. This feature is in beta development. To insert your entry centre the map on your location by clicking and zooming to it then just click on the "your entry" button. I just noticed that one of the forums I frequent (newbeetle.org) already has a good Google maps thing up and running on vb 3.5. Aparently, it's something they custom programmed. Anybody think it would make sense to ask them about how they did it, or ask if they are willing to share with the community? Just an idea. Here's their implementation:

They make it look so effortless, IMHO.

Here's his (the site owner) response when asked about sharing their info:
Obviously, we're using Google maps API for the map display. The trickest part of that is that Google doesn't provide a geocoder to convert addresses to latitude/longitude, so we had to build our own. We were able to find data for this from the census bureau. We found two very text large files -- one for the US and one for everywhere else. The US one has zip codes and lat/long and the international one just have names of cities and lat/long. So, we imported those into MySQL and turned them into databases. Then, we wrote a script to compare the user address info aganist the geocoding databases and write the results to an XML file. we run that on a cron job every 30 minutes so that the XML file is updated with new users and address changes.
From there, it's pretty simple. Google maps API is prepared to take in an XML file, so it's pretty much straight from their example javascript on their site.
And that's about it.
He says the geocode databases are somewhere around 400MB. Woweee!
(I don't want to hi-jack this plug-in's thread, so should we start a new thread on this?)

So normally it must be a cookie-problem?

Thanks for writing this plugin - very cool. It didn't work on my board at first; found out it's the way you're setting the window.onload event. Our board already has an onload event, and our onload overrode your onload. Best way to get around this is to attach an event instead of just setting onload like that. I changed anywhere you set the window.onload handler to this and it worked great.
if(window.addEventListener) {
window.addEventListener("load", Load_Map, false);
} else if(window.attachEvent) {
window.attachEvent("onload", Load_Map);
}
Thanks again!

Been waiting for somebody to add this, but I'm at the point where I needed it so I wrote it. Nothing fancy, but it works. I can't support this, but wanted to share. Here's the changes I made:
in VBGooglemap.php I added this:
function geocode($query) {
$service = "http://brainoff.com/geocoder/rest/?";
$f = implode("",file($service . $query));
preg_match("/:long\>([\d\.-]*)/",$f,$long);
preg_match("/:lat\>([\d\.-]*)/",$f,$lat);
$coords["long"] = $long[1];
$coords["lat"] = $lat[1];
return $coords;
}
right after this:
// ################################################## #####################
// ######################## START MAIN SCRIPT ############################
// ################################################## #####################
Then after this:
//################################################
// END Functions for setting the users location
//################################################
}
I added this:
if ($_REQUEST['do'] == 'geocodelookup') {
$coords = geocode($_SERVER["QUERY_STRING"]);
if($coords["long"] && $coords["lat"]) echo($coords["long"]."|".$coords["lat"]);
exit();
}
In each of the VBGooglemap_display/set_yourlocation templates add these functions to one of the <SCRIPT> blocks
function lookupZip(zip) {
var q = "zip="+zip;
doLookup(q);
}
function lookupCity(city) {
var q = "city="+city;
doLookup(q);
}
function doLookup(q) {
var t = getTransport();
t.open("GET","?do=geocodelookup&"+q, false);
t.send("");
if(t.responseText) {
var coords = t.responseText.split('|');
if(!coords||coords.length!=2) return;
map.centerAndZoom(new GPoint(coords[0], coords[1]), 6);
} else {
alert("Not Found or Invalid Lookup!");
}
}
function getTransport() {
if(window.XMLHttpRequest || window.ActiveXObject) {
try{
req = new XMLHttpRequest();
} catch(e) {
try{
req = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
} catch(e) {
try {
req = new ActiveXObject("Msxml4.XMLHTTP");
} catch(e) {
try {
req = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");
} catch(e) {
return false;
}
}
}
}
return req;
}
}
And lastly I added this HTML below the first <script> block:
<table class="tborder" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" width="100%" border="0" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="tcat">$vbphrase[googlemap_edit]</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1"><div class="smallfont">

</tr>
<tr>
<td class="thead">Zip Code Lookup</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt2"><form onsubmit="this.zipsub.onclick();return false;"><input type="text" id="gmapZipLookup"/><input name="zipsub" type="submit" value="lookup" onclick="lookupZip(document.getElementById('gmapZipLookup') .value); return false;"/></form></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="thead">City Lookup
<div class="smallfont">
<font class="small">city,state,US (ie. Marietta,GA,US) or city,country (London,UK)</font>
</div>
</td>
</tr>

Exactly the same problem in my forum: IE as guest works fine, click on balloon shows userinfo, IE as member shows balloons, but click on balloon only centers the map, no userinfo. Firefox works fine.
So normally it must be a cookie-problem?
Any suggestions?

Can anybody help with this problem? Most of my members can no longer use this hack as the majority use IE. :(

Man, this is a great hack, it would really be nice to get at least some kind of reply from stonyarc that he has abandoned this project or is aware of the IE issue and working on it, or that the people with the problem are themselves at fault and it works fine..
I posted this "balloon not popping up in IE problem several weeks ago and have patiently been waiting for something......anything. I have not send stonyarc a pm becuase I feel lucky to have any of the hacks on these forums and don't want to take someones time when they are doing somethng for free I figured he would get around to it, .... But this is just such a damn great hack........ and to login here every day and read this thread looking for any news from stonyarc.... and see that he is visiting the forum on a regular basis and not at least acknowledging the posts is frustrating.
This is my favorite hack of all time.... I have even tried to get all my users to switch to firefox so they can use it! LOL
Stonyarc..... I beg you.... please please pretty please..... let us know whats the scoop. I am more than willing to donate if your time is the issue here. But somehow, I doubt that is the issue...

OK, i did a search on this thread with multiple variances on user info changes, additions, etc........ found nothing. And now i've gone through the first 15 pages of threads and not found the answer i'm looking for, only requests.
Is there a post in here somewhere that addresses adding additional user information to the info that pops up when you click on a balloon? Sorry to not sift through the entire thread myself, just thought if someone remembered off the top of their head if this was addressed yet or not, it might save me some time and patience, lol.
Thanks.

Stony, I hate to bug you but in order to add the sidebars to my site from vBadvanced I have to add this snippet of code to the very top:
define('VBA_PORTAL', true);
define('VBA_PAGE', 'Forum');
(underneath <?php)
When I do, it breaks the map :( - you can see it here:
http://mlgpwncast.com/forum/VBGooglemap.php
Do you have any ideas as to why? The map is the only thing that doesn't load :( - yet it works fine when I don't have that snippet of code in.
I'm quite perplexed :(.
I've since been forced to remove that snippet of code - if you need, I'll add it back in later for "debugging."
Thanks!

To Lance and any others here who have been experiencing the problem with the balloons not showing when clicking on the markers in IE, I found a fix for my forum by going through one by one and disabling my recently added plugins... I found when I disabled vB Pager, my Googlemap marker balloons started showing up again in IE. So if you have vB Pager installed that might be what's causing the problem with this extension.
I'm so happy as I was just about to disable this extension and I really do love it. I'm going to give up vB Pager (temporarily anyway), so that my Googlemap still works until this conflict can be worked out anyway.
Anyway, hope that helps someone here too.
Cheers

Been waiting for somebody to add this, but I'm at the point where I needed it so I wrote it. Nothing fancy, but it works. I can't support this, but wanted to share. Here's the changes I made:
in VBGooglemap.php I added this:
function geocode($query) {
$service = "http://brainoff.com/geocoder/rest/?";
$f = implode("",file($service . $query));
preg_match("/:long\>([\d\.-]*)/",$f,$long);
preg_match("/:lat\>([\d\.-]*)/",$f,$lat);
$coords["long"] = $long[1];
$coords["lat"] = $lat[1];
return $coords;
}
right after this:
// ################################################## #####################
// ######################## START MAIN SCRIPT ############################
// ################################################## #####################
Then after this:
//################################################
// END Functions for setting the users location
//################################################
}
I added this:
if ($_REQUEST['do'] == 'geocodelookup') {
$coords = geocode($_SERVER["QUERY_STRING"]);
if($coords["long"] && $coords["lat"]) echo($coords["long"]."|".$coords["lat"]);
exit();
}
In each of the VBGooglemap_display/set_yourlocation templates add these functions to one of the <SCRIPT> blocks
function lookupZip(zip) {
var q = "zip="+zip;
doLookup(q);
}
function lookupCity(city) {
var q = "city="+city;
doLookup(q);
}
function doLookup(q) {
var t = getTransport();
t.open("GET","?do=geocodelookup&"+q, false);
t.send("");
if(t.responseText) {
var coords = t.responseText.split('|');
if(!coords||coords.length!=2) return;
map.centerAndZoom(new GPoint(coords[0], coords[1]), 6);
} else {
alert("Not Found or Invalid Lookup!");
}
}
function getTransport() {
if(window.XMLHttpRequest || window.ActiveXObject) {
try{
req = new XMLHttpRequest();
} catch(e) {
try{
req = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
} catch(e) {
try {
req = new ActiveXObject("Msxml4.XMLHTTP");
} catch(e) {
try {
req = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");
} catch(e) {
return false;
}
}
}
}
return req;
}
}
And lastly I added this HTML below the first <script> block:
<table class="tborder" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" width="100%" border="0" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="tcat">$vbphrase[googlemap_edit]</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1"><div class="smallfont">
$vbphrase[googlemap_smallhelp]
</div></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="thead">Zip Code Lookup</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt2"><form onsubmit="this.zipsub.onclick();return false;"><input type="text" id="gmapZipLookup"/><input name="zipsub" type="submit" value="lookup" onclick="lookupZip(document.getElementById('gmapZipLookup') .value); return false;"/></form></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="thead">City Lookup
<div class="smallfont">
<font class="small">city,state,US (ie. Marietta,GA,US) or city,country (London,UK)</font>
</div>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt2"><form onsubmit="this.citysub.onclick();return false;"><input type="text" id="gmapCityLookup"/><input type="submit" value="lookup" name="citysub" onclick="lookupCity(document.getElementById('gmapCityLookup ').value); return false;"/></form></td>
</tr>
</table>
Also note that since this was included in the above code, I removed it from it's original position in the templates:
<tr>
<td class="tcat">$vbphrase[googlemap_edit]</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1"><div class="smallfont">

Could this be modified to pull the zip codes (created by a custom field) from the database and generate the map based on that?
If you look at the code, there are "lookupZip" and "lookupAddress" methods. If you added a custom user field to store zip code, then you could certainly write a batch script to popuplate the map tables with markers.
The INSERT statement would look like this. I wrote a quick script (It's a total mess or I'd post it) that tries to do a lookup on the "location" field so as not to make the user enter a zip. Only about a hundred of our users put in resolvable locations, however.
The script would need to select all of the users from the DB...this statement grabs their location:
$userlocation = $db->query("
SELECT user.userid, user.username, user.usergroupid, opts.field2
FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "user AS user
LEFT JOIN ".TABLE_PREFIX."userfield as opts ON opts.userid = user.userid WHERE field2 IS NOT NULL");
Then loop through each one, call the lookupAddress method. If a latitued and longitude are returned do an insert like this:
$db->query_write("INSERT INTO " . TABLE_PREFIX . "googlemap (userid,username,usergroupid,text_map,lat_map,lng_ map) VALUES ('" . $loc['userid'] . "','" . $loc['username'] . "','" . $loc["usergroupid"] . "','" . $loc["username"]. " is in ".$l."!','" . $lat . "','" . $long . "')");

Have you tried just inserting a new entry into the [your_table_prefix]googlemap table in your database? I haven't tried this, but it seems like you should be able to simply add a new entry in there with the appropriate latitude and longitude. You can fake a username ("Joe's Bowling Alley", etc...) and id. The insert would look something like this:
INSERT INTO [TABLE_PREFIX ]googlemap (userid,username,usergroupid,text_map,lat_map,lng_ map) VALUES ('-1','Donut Land','1','...mmmmm donuts...,[Latitude Goes Here]','[Longitude Goes Here]')

Try disabling some of your other plugins and see if it works. For me it was some kind of conflict between this and vB Pager, for you it might be some other plugin.

Yea.. I guess this would work... But if I have to start editing the database manually to do this, it isnt worth it... If you do it though, make sure to use a high ID that you wont ever need

...or a negative number assuming the DB allows that.
Also, for these "fake" entries, you don't need to put in unique ID's. This hack doesn't care how many entries there are for each userid; it displays them all, so every fake entry could have a userid of -1

Is the coder (stonyarc) for this add-on still supporting this product?
On the original page there is a list of things that are to be added in the next release, I was hoping this is still in progress and will be completed someday soon?
Can anybody let me know if this is still under development or has it been an abandoned?
I would like to add it to my forum but I first need to find out if it is still supported by the coder. There is another mapping program on the forum but I like this one better, I hope somebody can help me out with my questions.
Thanks.
1.0.4 Development
- Event handler
- Hotspots functions (different colour and insert functions)
- usergroup permissions
- link to profile
- option to display the avatar
- custom markers (not yet sure)
- events and hotspots display
- style guidelines to change colours

Ok I installed this mod on my site and my test site. Everything works but it will not show member locations when the enter them.
I am using vb 3.5.4
Site url: http://www.d1arena.com/VBGooglemap.php
I am also using IE beta 7 for my browser. Do not know if this is my problem or not.
The markers.xml file is set to 777 and is being updated.
Done this also with no help: If your marker update or delete doesn't show directly, just close all your browser windows and reload the main map page or clear browser cache..
The users also will not update it always is blank.

Great hack!
Is it possible to change either the font colour or the background colour in the popup message baloon that shows the text accompanying the marker?
Similarly changing the link colour in the three boxes at the the top right of the map display.
My forum uses very light text on a black background so do not want to affect that but text is almost unreadable with the font colours at present.

A little status update:
The markers will no longer be placed by parsing the markers.xml with javascript.
currently it's a two step principle
database => xml file => parsing and placement
new version
database => placement using php
Thus avoiding the caching issue.

Ok, as a temp fix for the conflict with vb Pager and this hack, go to the template "vbgooglemap" and remove
$footer
Now this WILL kill the footer, AND the pager for that page. However this will allow you to have both working until this is resolved..

That should normally no longer be a problem in the new version.
The issues with named maps should be ok too

Privacy is indeed a big issue. I'll look into to that.
Same reason I didn't want to use geocodin with addresses.
Thanks - very much appreciated!

I would like to use the VBGooglemap for another purpose. Instead of using members I have been altering the db table to hold specific locations. I can input a users location on the map (then accessing the underlying database table I change the user ID to -1). This way I can add several locations.
I can link the records back to an entry I have placed in my vbLinks db but is there a way to hyperlink from the vbLinks entry to the location on the map? If this could be done - then brilliant - just what I want.
Also the hyperlink I create back to the vblinks entry has to have the number of the Link entry - is there a way round this.
Keep up the excellent work!!!

All,
I have a screenshot for you all (see attachment)
other status
- member.php link with correct userid => fixed
- on the fly update when inserting or updating (known as the cache issue) => fixed in both IE and firefox
- display of images in the balloon => fixed
- css support for the balloon => fixed
I'm also proud to announce that I'll be releasing a hotspot version of googlemaps for vbulletin. That one will be created as soon as the upgrade to 2.0.0 of the core engine is complete.
just a quick question, im assuming something like this would be handy for a car club website, where a user can put in a bookmark to a meeting spot etc etc for any meets? thats the general idea yeah?

Have you seen this at all? http://www.radiogodsforum.com/forum/index.php?act=gmap it is obiously on invision boards but they are using links that allow members to place your exact address in and get the long/;at and fill them in without having to scroll to your location.
Link to Mod: D21-Google Member Map http://mods.invisionize.com/db/index.php?f=5329
Link they are using to get your exact location:

For the guests the howto is in the install txt file
That only really hides the link... What would be best is if the google map didnt show the markers if the user was unregistered

This opens up the privacy issue again which is mentioned several times already.
Not everybody wants to show their exact location. Even Google warns for this.
In Europe it's even more strict and even punishable by law if you don't warn the users about the risks and the fact that you would use the real address. Moreover it hasn't got enough global coverage

I second that please, it would be be very useful. Would it be possible to link to that particular location - So if people refer to it in a thread as a hyperlink the user could be taken to that location on the map :-)
We don't ask for much ;-)

I got news for you both.
This version is the "vbgooglemap User Edition" but I'll be releasing a "vbgooglemap Hotspot Edition" too once this one is completely finished. That one will focus on nice locations, places to be, small comments, link to a thread and a small image. I'm still working on the backend for that one, the datamodel and the approval system for events or locations.
I'll try to add custom usergroup support in the v2.0.0 vbgooglemap user edition.
http://www.xboxusersgroup.com/forums/vbgooglemap.php?do=showmain for a preview
For the xbox fans: a gamercard edition will be running soon on http://www.xboxusersgroup.com which will show our custom gamercards we have.

Just a simple "allow access yes/no". Where to show the link is still up to the admin.

I can't tell you how excited I am to see all the new work on this awesome product! ..... It is very cool to see the progress "blow by blow" ...... I will add a suggestion for down the line, that might be a nice addition.....
Right now, if you want to find someone's location ,(at least as far as I can tell) you need to click around and "search" the map for a user.... It is also very difficult once there is a good number of entry's to tell if another has been addes. A "Total number of Members on the Map" would be cool. What would be really nice is if the members who have placed their location on the map, would come up in some kind of a list... So if you wanted to know where a member was, you could go to the list, click on there name, and somehow it would open the map with there balloon popped up (to me its all magic how this works lol) ...... that would be really cool... or a link in there profile...... That sounds like some major work, but with the things you are doing with this hack, it is obvious that you are taking this thing to a level we can't even fathom. A "recent additions" list would be another option.... or the ability to sort a master list of entry's by date or alphabetical would do the same thing.
Again, thanks for this great product, and please consider my suggestion just an idea that might plant a seed for something in the distant development of this awesome hack! Thanks again, Lance

@lance
So you want some nice ajax stuff on there ;) I'll have a check but the list is a very good idea. I'll see if I can make that available soon. Opening the balloon from the list will be difficult because it does expect a click event but centering would be doable.
@Gizmo
The googlemap does use a different table. I'll have a check if I can come up with some alternatives.

I guess the only other thing I'd suggest for forum usage, is the option to link to a specified level / location, and the ability for the users to view the vB code with the link. Would be helpful for some forums.

I've tried my site name, my IP, IP/, site name/, IP/public_html, sitename/public_html...
I've gotta be msising something stupid here - I got it to work on the first try when I first installed vbgooglemap - any thoughts?

FYI
I noticed that some of my users had been promoted to moderator since they added their Map data. I went into the table to change their user group number manually there, so I am "fixed", but is there a away to automatically pull that instead of storing it? Or maybe a clean up script?

I am running vb 3.5.0 .... could this be the issue?
NEVERMIND........ I didn't see one of the templates..... works great now.... thanks for the help!
I realized I followed stonyarc's directions for changing the text color in the display map template..... so now it is working, but i am back to white on white with the username and I have a black box with black text for the description. I tried to follow the old directions to change the text color after reverting, but the template is different and I can't figure it out.....
In Stonyarc's instruction post with those previous instructions, he stated the text color would be an admincp adjustable entry, but I don't see anything like that in the new version....... Stonyarc?

I'm wondering if there's an ability to allow for multiple locations for each user. I'm not really using this for a "Hi, I'm located here." thing. I'm using it so people can post various locations they've been.
Thanks!

That's because you changed styles in the previous version.
To fix that revert the templates and reenter your style changes in the vbgooglemap_display_map
using the available css
<style type="text/css" id="gamerinfo-css">

Very nice upgrade. Thank You.
FYI
I noticed that some of my users had been promoted to moderator since they added their Map data. I went into the table to change their user group number manually there, so I am "fixed", but is there a away to automatically pull that instead of storing it? Or maybe a clean up script?
If they go to their entry and click update the information should refresh
stonyarc
04-11-2006, 06:46 AM
it's there, for some reason the bit field did not upload.
Make sure you upload all files also the bitfield_vbgooglemap.xml to /includes/xml
The view permissions should be automatically set.
if you add/import product-vbgooglemap.xml make sure overwrite is to yes.
Check if the bitfield xml is there in the folder.
If so you can force an update of the bitfields
/admincp/index.php?do=buildbitfields
The permissions should be available
Go to admincp / Usergroups / Usergroup Manager to set the usergroup permission. To edit the permissions select ?Edit Usergroup? and click go.
Hope this helps.

Mine works flawless, got one question though, for the members to show on the map do they have to enter their info or will it take the members online from the forum's who's online.
For privacy reasons the user has to set their own location.
This is not a version that plots the who's online.
I can make one but I think someone already has created something called worldmap that should cover that.

When i first did the vBmap upgrade, I used my old key right away and it didn't like it right from the start. I tried several new keys, but can't figure out what site name the API is looking for. I tried my site name, the IP, sitename/, IP/, sitename/public_html, IP/public_html - nothin'... (vbMap is in the root of my html_public folder)
Having the same problem but when i click on the show map button after i get the error the map loads and shows all my markers on it. I just allways get the error the first time it loads the page.

Hello Stonyarc,
I have been changing the colors in the above mentioned area of the template....
Changed the .gmtext color to red and that works great.
but in the .gmballoon, I have been having troubles. changing the background around the text works fine, but when I change the second part ( I assume this is the text color) "color:#000000;" to red, nothing happens. When I mouse over, it changes to the color from vb, but no matter what I set this to, it stays white.
Also, I don't see a way to change the background for the .gmtext part....
I added "background: #ffffff;" into the .gmtext area, but it only changed the area immediately around the text. there is still a black square inside the balloon. I am sorry if I am such a moron and I have again run out of talent.....
here is how the template is now set on My Map (http://www.forums.repashy.com/vbgooglemap.php)
my changes are highlighted in green

I haven't been able to identify the problem on vba.

I upgraded to 2.01 and see you changed the css part of the display map template.... and added some code... I played around with it again, but for som reason on my site, I just can't get the username text to show as anything but white no matter what I set the color too.... I just set all the backgrounds in the css to black, and actually like how it looks now, but it is odd that changing the color in the template has no effect on the username color..... The gmlink sets the color for the div surrounding the member link.
The link itself takes from the core template you have running that is why it shows like that.
Add this to the template and you can start showing off
.gmlink a:link, .gmlink a:visited {
font-weight : bold;
text-transform : none;
font-size : 11px;
color : #000000;
}
.gmlink a:hover {
font-size : 11px;
color : #FFFFFF;
text-decoration : underline;
font-weight : bold;

It is ranked on high on the vbgooglemap todo so I hope I get it fixed soon.

Only did mine cause I wanted hot spots, and you were tied up with the Xbox site. But after you add the hotspots to your next version Ill add that back to my site to allower certain users ( bands and bars ) to post upcoming events since it has userpermissions as well. Thanks!

The code itself is done.. I am using my method because I don't have any moderators and I don't want to have another color as an administrator. :)
Editing your code I've found out some possible errors:
Here's the part I am talking about:
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==6)OR($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==7)OR($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==5))
{
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==6))
{
$type = $coloradmin ;
}
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==7))
{
$type = $colormod ;
}
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==5))
{
$type = $colorsupermod ;
}
}
else
{
$type = $colorother;
}
I am not quite sure but I _think_ it must be this instead:
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==6)OR($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==7)OR($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==5))
{
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==6))
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_coloradmin'] ;
}
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==7))
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_colormod'] ;
}
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==5))
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_colorsupermod'] ;
}
}
else
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_colorother'] ;
}
And here is what I did to only show online users in another color:
The new query (line 94)
$selection_xml = TABLE_PREFIX . "googlemap.lng_map as lng, ". TABLE_PREFIX ."googlemap.lat_map as lat,
".TABLE_PREFIX."googlemap.text_map as text, ".TABLE_PREFIX."googlemap.userid as userid,
".TABLE_PREFIX."googlemap.username as login,".TABLE_PREFIX."googlemap.usergroupid as displayusergroupid,
". TABLE_PREFIX ."online.userid as isonline";
$get_xml_users = $db->query_read("SELECT ".$selection_xml."
FROM `".TABLE_PREFIX."googlemap`
LEFT JOIN " . TABLE_PREFIX . "session AS online ON(online.userid = googlemap.userid)
WHERE lng_map<>'' AND lat_map<>''");
and some lines below it (106):
/*
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==6)OR($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==7)OR($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==5))
{
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==6))
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_coloradmin'] ;
}
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==7))
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_colormod'];
}
if (($get_xml_user["displayusergroupid"]==5))
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_colorsupermod'];
}
}
else
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_colorother'];
}
*/
if ($get_xml_user["isonline"])
{
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_coloradmin'] ;
}
else {
$type = $vbulletin->options['vbgooglemap_colorother'];
}
I commented your code out so that I can easily change it back.
The last 7 lines basically tell to use the color specified for the admin when a user is online (red in my case) and gray when the user is offline.
So far I could only test it with 2 users, future will tell how this performs. :)

I can include the online status in the marker file (little rewrite needed in the javascript parsing but that's ok). Thus avoiding messing with the usergroup codes. That way we can easily add something on the map or on the balloon.
I'll check what I can come up with.
It's 1 AM over here so I'm off to bed

Did you know that your marker on the screenshot is placed in Germany? It seems to be only 100 kilometres away from my location! :) aaah it's also 1AM for me.. I'm off. ;)
Do whatever you want but keep up this good work! :)

I checked and it was running on your website.
I haven't been able to identify the problem on vba.
I need to install it on my test server. In the code I don't see anything that might be causing that problem except maybe the window.onload javascript.
Do you have any other image maps running on your vba site????
um no not that i am aware of....but if you would like to check....i can pm you my login info....
oh and yes i am up and running....haven't tried with vba since the upgrade....i will

so it should be your basic URL you should enter on google.com and don't add a trailing /

Wierd... I finally got it to work but using http://IP/. :banana: I know I tried that same thing about a dozen times last night and never got it to work. Hmm... should I risk jumping to 2.0.1? :cheeky:

I am using vb 3.5.4 and vba 2.1.0 and the marker will not show on the map page and it also shows no users.
Now I can see my marker on the Your Entry page.
Anyone know what could cause this?
