I did like to be able to give guests permission to shout too, on my board.
and somewhere a little bix where they can type a name
example; I'm a guest and goes to the shoutbox, and type in: TK in the little name box: writes: hello in the type box and presses shout.
it will say: [Today 12:07 AM] G_TK: hello
(all guest will auto get a G_ infront of their name, and the name wont function as a link)
possible?

It would be great to give admins the opportunity to define x shouts per x posts/day
Example : makes 5 posts on one day , therefore he can make 20 shouts on that day.
Or another great option would be :
USers cannot post X shouts in a row
Great Mod !

Is it possible to restrict who has access to posting shouts in terms of post counts? We have a lot of people sign up just to spam the shout box, I would like to restrict it so that only people with 1000 posts are allowed to use the shout box.

I think it's already a feature in the shoutbox. Flood shout - look for it.

You could create a new group called Shouters based on your registered users group and then create a cron job to change members into that group at 1000 posts... Then entered the registered users group into the ban box in shouts settings...
BR ;)

I have run into a bug while using konqueror (browser for linux)
The scrollbar to the side apparently doesn't work and it stretches the entire shoutbox out.
here's a screenshot
http://www.xblteams.com/snapshot1.png
Probably related to the safari complaint as the both use a form of khtml.
How do I turn unregistered to be able to post?
Sorry, can't find that option. pls help

Installed, flawless and done in 5 seconds flat. Thank you very much, this is a terrific mod.
I have a small suggestion/question: what is the AJAX polling time set at? It might be an idea to allow that as an option, for those with serious hardware they could set it low to give a proper chatroom feeling, and those without the hardware could set it lower so as not to upset their hosts :)

Hi all,
ist there any way to include the shoutbox into my arcade.php also? I'm not using the add-on "vbshout on all pages". I only want the box on forumhume, vbadvanced portal AND v3arcade. Maybe i can add some additional code to my arcade.php?

Yup :)
Or you can prune shouts by a particular user like: /prune username
I couldn't find this yet here>
I would like to show VBShout only with specific forum.
1. please can u give me conditional and where to place it?
2. this would be good to have in admin area for flexible use.

The way to get around that, is after banning them in the Admin CP, set 'Banned Permissions' to "Cannot see Shoutbox"

This shoutbox has gotten HORRIBLE support from the coder. The duplicate smilies issue is huge on my forum, amongst other problems, and was supposed to have been fixed with 2.0, but never was. When will there be an update/upgrade to this shoutbox from RC with the numerous bug fixes, etc.?!
KidneyBoy
11-11-2005, 04:36 AM
Well if you notice, the author does not have the "supported" box checked off. So basically that's a warning to everyone that it probably won't get much attention. It's not to say he might come back and release an update now and then.....
I would *REALLY REALLY REALLY* like to see somebody take over this project. This is definately one of the most popular MOD's on 3.5.X. I just wish more coders were familiar with AJAX, and would be willing to step up to the plate on this one. Heck this is one of them I'd gladly pay a bit for support (as it so badly needs it).

Another suggestion, not sure if it's been brought up but its there a way that the Font color and face can be saved to that user from the last shout so we dont have to change it every single time we make a shout, i know it's petty but Im not sure if those settings can be saved or not

i get this error when i m not logged in:
"Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /vbshout.php on line 288"
Any solution?Thanks!

Think I might have a quick fix on the "viewing the shoutbox"...
Go to your plugin manager and find... WOL Config [Part A] - edit it
change
$userinfo['action'] = 'Viewing The Shoutbox';
to
$userinfo['action'] = 'Viewing The Forums';
I am not 100% this works, but it looks like it does. I'm also looking into changing the font as well. Can someone test this out to see if this works?

There is a problem with this hack, especially if you add on to it with one of the other hacks that allows you to put the shoutbox on multiple pages. It will show that you are viewing the shoutbox in who's online if you are on a page that has teh shoutbox on it. That's not bad if you only have it on one page, but as you add it in to more than one page, very shortly it can look like everyone on your site is always in the shoutbox. Well, here is the fix for it:
In vbshout.php find:
/*================================================= =====================*\
|| ################################################## ################## ||
|| # vBShout v2 Created By Zero Tolerance [http://gzevolution.net] ||
|| ################################################## ################## ||
\*================================================ ======================*/
After it add:
if ((!$_GET['do'] || $_GET['do'] == '') && !$_POST['do'])
{
$_GET['do'] = 'latest';
}
if ($_GET['do'] == 'latest')
{
define('LOCATION_BYPASS', true);
}
That will take care of the shoutbox on the page. You can also add the code below to what is above if you want to also not see it when they post a shout from teh shoutbox. Personally I added it because technically they are still on the page they are viewing.
if ($_POST['do'] == 'shout')
{
define('LOCATION_BYPASS', true);
}
Also, the problem where Who's Online shows it as index.php is a problem with the plugin. Edit the WOL Config [Part A] plugin and change index.php to vbshout.php.
Hope this works for you guys, seems to be working for me.

How does this affect the server? Does it cause much of a server load? I don't know anything about Ajax. I'm also concerned about my users using it as a mini-chat room since the shouts display so quickly w/o a page refresh. Wouldn't this cause some load issues?
I`m getting an error message: When I type on my vbShoutbox 2.0, nothing will appear, when I try to type again a window comes up and says "Posting in progress"
Please help, i`m running vbulleting 3.50 Gold.
I did the install like the instructions says throught the Pluging System > Manage Products > Add/Import Product. Also uploded the .php file to the forum root.
Help with the post above please.

I got that once too, but I refreshed and it went away. I would take a wild stab in the dark and say it's something to do with your connection to the db/server, how's your resource usage?
When you say Refreshed, what do you mean ? Refreshed the page or what ? Please let me know.

Along w/ the question of how much server load it causes...is there a way to slow down the shouts a member makes? Like x secs between shouts, sort of like the vb's search feature? That would probably prevent shout abuse.
I know it's possible to ban abusers...but I prefer to moderate the amount of shouts instead of just ban people.

As for bandwidth, I've set this to all but unregistered users and banned.
I've had more people visit, more spiders, yet my bandwidth seems untouched compared to other months. Maybe I'm missing something. For me it doesn't use much bandwidth.

Just some information for those who board may be big or is continuing to grow
My board is only accessable by registered members, permissions set and therefore the only time the shoutbxo ever loads is when a registered member logs in.
I have a fairly active board, not to large, however I typically have between 30-60 members online at all times. I do not use that shoutbox on all pages mod, used it for one day and my bandwidth usage sored. I typically use 600-900 Megs of bandwidth each day (not that I only have a vbulletin board on my account, no other scripts, images, or files) and when I have the shoutbox enabled my bandwidth sores to around 4 to 5 gigs a day.
It's gotten so bad that this week I decided to only enable the chat from 5PM to Midnight. However the bandwidth still reaches 2.5 Gigs.
I'm not complaining about this mod, I think it's an excellent concept. I just need someway to decrease the bandwidth usage.

yea, but hte point was that guests and web crawlers are not depelting ANY bandwidth dealing with the shoutbox what do ever, it's only members. Puts a strain on the account so I'll hate to see how board with more then 100 members on at all times fair. They would have to be using at least 20 gigs a day, the bare least.

PLEASE HELP!
I am going to upgrade to vb3.5 and would like to switch to this shoutbox instead installed BVShoutboxFull, but I do not want to loose history and specialy statistic (top shouterst etc.).

just to add above, appriciate the other side of the argument, my shoutbox is used all the time, nearly every minute there is a new comment, more then that, conversations typically occur in the shoutbox for extensive periods. Maby at least 10 LARGE scale conversations a day lasting at least 30 minutes each. Point is, my shoutbox is being used by many members, all the time, that can be one difference.

A shame too considering how good the shoutbox is and the potential it has/had. I suggest someone try and pick this up from him.

I just decreased the size of hte vbshout.php file from around 16k to just under 4k
I also decreased the template a.. section by more then 60% by removing any instance of smilies.
So i'll see how this holds up for a day, if there is an extremly significant decrease in bandwidth usaged i'll post the resulting files up.

I'm not sure if it's already listed but I might of over-looked it but.. A "# of shouts per day" limit would be useful for some users/usergroups that post non-sense over and over and over again.

I go the 'loading...' message, but this is cause I'm a dumbass and upload the vbshout.xml to the forumroot as opposed to the vbshout.php file.
Fixed this and it's all sweet now - if only there were a way to breathtest users before they can shout, though that would defeat the purpose of my site... wouldn't it!

Hi everybody I have this problem:
admin edits are saved and showing correctly
users edits have two mistakes:
1. edit is not shown on vbshout, only in archive
2. edited text is visible only in archive, but due coding issues it is showing anything else but letters.
I persume, that this has someting with permisions features. Does anybody has any idea where the problem could be solved?

Hi all,
I strongly recommend to the vbulletin staff to remove this plugin.
Anyone uses it will notice a high performance drop due to the automated refresh.
I don't have anything against Zero Tolerance, but if he's a coder he should know automated refresh would kill any server with some people online. Just don't install this plugin if you have more than 10 users online :-P

How to remove autoupdate
// removing autoupdate
edit the template forumhome_vbshout and remove the below code
setTimeout('requestShouts()', 10000)
// Adding the refresh button
edit the template forumhome_vbshout and add the below code were you wish to display the refresh button

Is there a way to prevent people who havent got a certain amount of posts to use the shout box yet?1. Add a additional usergroup called "Shoutbox Users".
2. Limit the use of the Shoutbox only to this group. (AdminCP-vbShout Options)
3. Created a new Promotion that add users with a specified amount of posts to this usergroup (Promotion Type: Additional Usergroups).

This actually doesnt work.
Ive made a usergroup called Shoutbox users, banned user group 2 (registered) from the shoutbox, and people with Registered and Shoutbox users set as secondary still cant use the shoutbox.
if I make shoutbox users the primary user group they can use it, but cant log in to the forum!
So this doesnt work at all.

Two questions...
Firstly, which which template controls the shout display size, and the time/date which appears before the shout. I want to remove the brackets, and make the font smaller to match my forum.

Hate to say it, but it's the shoutbox. My site has experienced the same problems from this. I honestly do not know why people bring out mods/hacks/plug-ins.....then drop them right away afterwards, even if they do good. All that does is hurts the modding community and clogs it up. If nothing else it would be nice if someone else could pick this up, fix the bugs, maybe add a few new features then re-release it with the coders permission since it seems he's not going to do it himself anyways.

Test it out. Disable your shoutbox for 24 hours and see if you and anyone else can notice a difference. On my site (of approx 1,000 users), there was a significant difference. It started "lagging" when I installed it, but didn't think much of it. It increased as the shoutbox grew to be more popular. I remove it, and now it runs much smoother.

What about reducing the refresh rate? Make it only update every couple mins or simply on page load or after a shout was made. That (im my mind) would eliminate the constant polling of multiple members and take the pressure off the server.
i thinnk there should be an automatic dump of the shoutbox archive after x peroid of time.
Tulsa
12-06-2005, 01:25 AM
In examining the stats of the bandwidth usage, even reducing the refresh to 20 seconds didn't help that much. Any less than 20 seconds and the delay is causing it to not be utilized, so it just refreshes for nothing.
I've disabled it for now until this one gets tweaked or until someone else comes out with a shoutbox that's functional and without so much downside.

My shoutbox hasn't slowed down my server too much (I have an avg of 30-40 registered members on at any given minute, and guests cannot see the shoutbox). However, I increased the refresh to 15000 I think, and that will be the first thing I go to change again if when/if I need to. At worst, I'm sure the shoutbox can be slightly altered to show up on it's own page, with no refresh (basically, the archive view but with the ability to shout).
If anyone is saying their shoutbox is slowing down their server, and what you really mean to say is it's taking longer for your *page* to finish loading, I assume you either have all "extras" (smileys and formatting) disabled, OR have taken this out of your template, to kill the smiley pre-loading?
I did this, and my vbshout area loads almost twice as fast now:
//make it load quicker, take smileys out of vbshout without giving up the formatting extras or ability to use :smiley codes:
//remove this from forumhome_vbshout:
<div id='shout_emo' style='display:none'>

I was having the same problem. The line it references in the class_core.php file deals with your database access. I found that if I changed the auto refresh of the shoutbox to anything higher than 40 seconds I stopped getting the error.

A nice plugin - very easy to install.
I have it running on a medium size forum (usually around 80 members and 200 guests online), which sits on a dual-xeon server with loads of ram. My load averages have increased from about 0.50 to 2.50
I'll give it a day or two, but I don't think it will be staying. I might try removing it from display for guests first..

The shoutbox is slowing down your sever? This is funny. How kind of host & server are you on?
How can you make it so admins can use /me only?
I dont want every user being able to use this.

In firefox, press CTRL+F5, should re-load the files then and skip loading from cache.
Microphone? Hmm, i doubt that will be a feature.

Its pity, as this is the main problem of this hack, and havent fixed till now:(

I mean the "loading" issue, test it both on Firefox 1.5 or in the latest Ie Browser

The shoutbox is slowing down your sever? This is funny. How kind of host & server are you on?
It's not really funny, but it's logical, though.
10 seconds refresh for everyone. That makes one (or more, didn't have a look at the code) request to the DB, and some php data parsing.
If you have 100 users online at the same time, that will be 10 requests a second.
And I don't even talk about people who thought it would be a great idea to put the shoutbox on every page of the forum.
I uninstalled this hack as my little server couldn't handle the load.
I think a warning should be posted in the hack description, as I never thought it would be such a ressource hog.
Snake
12-09-2005, 03:31 PM
Well then why don't you just increase the refresh load like to 300 seconds? There ya go.

well i look at it is that no one is forcing you to install this if you find it causes that then uninstall it.. that simple... i havent seen no difference in load increase at all...
Symen_4ab
12-09-2005, 03:48 PM
Increasing the refresh is a solution, for sure, not mine, though. (I want a "live" chat.)
True, noone forced me to install this, but I think that a warning message could stop all these "server load high, why ?" messages, and there are many people who don't know why their server load went higher than usual without reading every page of this thread.
If you havent seen any difference, then I see three possible explanations :
1. You are blind
2. You have a server so big that your load is at 0.00 all the time
3. You have 1 or less people on the same time on your forum
Well, joke apart , you must see an increase in the load, as the shoutbox makes queries...
It may be a little difference, but there is a difference.
divided_by_fear
12-09-2005, 04:16 PM
i do have a big server... this dont lag mine nor does it increase the load... no matter what you do everything makes queries just some not as much as others... if you run the server like i do you could see everything going on... its not that bad... so you think auto refresh shouldnt be in there? what about whos online that has auto refresh should vbulletin take that out too?

You don't seem to understand me.
I'm not insulting you, nor the hack creator !
I know that almost everything in vbulletin run queries, I'm not a complete idiot, you know. I was saying that it ups the load, that's for sure.
This hack is not intended for forums with many members online, or only for "overpowered" servers.
I'm not saying (some in this thread are, by the way) that mods should remove this hack, but a little (almost invisible, if you prefer) "This hack can be server-intensive if you have many members online, check auto-refresh rate and keep an eye on server load" would not hurt anyone.
This very script was the one using the most cpu cycles on my server (little server,yes, 4-5 sites hosted, 2 vbulletin).
I was using the mini-hack allowing you to display the shoutbox on every page of the forum, and I think my members like to open many pages of the forum ;)

After monitoring the server, it turns out that this INCREASED my server load by 2-3x of it's normal load. I had it on for about 1.5 months or so. Now that it's uninstalled, the site runs MUCH smoother.

Actually.. now experiencing such a problem with my hosting co .. here is their explanation to it all ..
every X seconds another process (shout) starts up and uses 4-8 % which is why you get the CPU exceeded error and must wait for the process to stop before continuing anywhere on the site..
then i send them a ticket and here is what they responded..
Due to recent upgrades in PHP and MySQL, we've noticed issues with vBulletion. You may need to install the latest version of vBulletin and implement any fixes found in their forum.
We are on the latest vbull
So there is some truth to this.. or is there? any ideas? any suggestions?
Is this host giving me a story? Do i need a new host?
Thanks in advance..!

Or, perhaps a better question here might be is if there is a shoutbox hack that's like this that is better for forums with a LOT of users and that allows you to clear out all the posts easily since neither of these seems possible with this hack?
It seems like a great hack, and I'm currently using it, but I'm not sure it's going to continue to work well for us if we can't clear out posts and if it causes the server problems outlined above for high load forums (which ours sometimes is).

Well you can prune it when you think you need to. I do it frequently just as I happen to be passing by, nobody ever looks at the archive or cares that it gets pruned. An automated feature would be nice, yes.
I use it on a shared hosting account, although it's a premium quality hosting account. What did you want to know? It does put my bandwidth up a lot (block search engines from vbshout.php via robots.txt, helps a fair bit) but my server resource use is fine (Dual Xeons though, you might find budget hosts will get upset about things like Shoutboxes).

Oh I own my own box so I wasnt too worried about that part of it. Just maybe a slow response from vbshout itself. My members seem to use it as its a chatroom so I didnt know if there was a point where it would just slow down due to a larger database query.

Man, this is a bummer.. I just looked thru 65 pages . I had to uninstall this. It worked GREAT when it was just the forum mods on the test site, but the day we went live, with only about 25 users, load got so bad that no one could get a page rerfresh...
Yes, I know, there are solutions in the 65 pages here for some of that stuff.. but I just had to uninstall it for now. I have other fish to fry from the upgrade.
@ mainframe - Thanks for the tip. I also saw a post in here somewhere to put it into it's own window... perhaps I will try that too.
But I really think there needs to be some caveats in the top post about possible issues peeps might have rather than make some one read this much to find out they have known issues. just my opine, and we all have one.

I understand that people get "Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /vbshout.php on line 288" when they are in a banned group
The shoutbox doesnt load for one of my users. He can view the vbshout.php file when he types it in maually. When he clicks on the link to vbshout.php?do=archive he gets that 288 error
Every other non-banned usergroup user it works fine for
Any help would be much appreciated

Bug:
fetch_musername() calls in vbshout.php doesn't pull from the correct Usergroup ID.
It pulls from user.usergroupid when in fact it should pull from user.displaygroupid, in the event of secondary usergroups overriding or adding Username Markup.
Fix:
Open ./vbshout.php
Find (all instances of):
, u.usergroupid
Add after (all instances):
, u.displaygroupid
Find (all instances of):
, 'usergroupid');
Replace (all instances) with:
, 'displaygroupid');

If anybody is experiencing an increased server load due to vBShout, we found on our site that it was being caused by the overuse of smilies in the shoutbox - for real! We implemented a new rule telling our users that they can only use one smilie per shout, and so far, so good. There is also an option in vBshout that will let you turn off the smilies for the shoutbox - but it hasn't come to that for us yet. Just thought I'd pass the results of our little experiment along...
