Staff Edit/Update
I have released an updated version of this hack (version 2.0.1), this version fixes some security issues with this hack. All version prior to this one allow users to insert html in their shouts, this can cause problems with them using html that breaks the site layout or malicious javascript. Download the new zip file (vBshout_fixed.zip) and upload the new vbshout.php file to patch/upgrade. If you want to manual instructions they are in the zip file, in the file bugfixes.txt
Second Staff update
I've uploaded a new version of this hack, dubbed '2.0.2'. This one should fix the html injection issues without breaking special characters. To upgrade, download the new zip file and upload the new vbshout.php file.
Please note that this only fixes the html injection issues. I do not use this hack on my own forum (although I've tested this on a client's board) so I will not be fixing the server load issues. I suggest you do not install this hack if you can't deal with the extra server load, as it's rather intensive.
- Brad

Excellent, it's working great on my test board. One very minor complaint though, when a member is viewing forumhome page now, their location listed in their profile is "Unknown Location /testvb/vbshout.php" It would be nice to have it say Forum Index like normal.

Make sure you go to "Manage Products" and click on "Add/Import Product" and are not going to "Download/Upload Plugin". That could be the problem.
Great .. members have been screaming for a shoutbox since I upgraded to 3.0.5

I think you'll need to upgrade to RC1 for this hack, that's the version that introduced the product manager.

I'd be interested in that as well. Our users would love to have the shoutbox back, but it looked like a dog's breakfast at the top of the forums. I'd be tempted to reload it if I could get it to appear at the bottom.

it looked like a dog's breakfast at the top of the forums. You are so nice... Zero Tolerance put in the effort to make a shoutbox and you say it looks like a dog's breakfast. I, for one, like the shoutbox at the top.
Good work on the shoutbox - I like it. Do you have a timeframe for when this will include permissions and the ability to edit shouts? I really do like the simplicity and I hope it doesnt get overblown like most of the ones for 3.0.7 have.
Edit: This is an extension not a plugin :D

Yes, upgrade to 3.5 RC1
Zero Tolerance
07-29-2005, 11:51 AM
Updated to v1.1, corrected the WOL, could of sworn i included those plugins .. oh well.
To answer a few questions, no this will not work with any beta versions, since none of them don't have the product manager, which you will need to upload the XML included in the download.
As for updating with options/permissions, yes that will come, i intend to use this shoutbox myself when i upgrade to vB 3.5, so more features will be on the way :)
Since a lot of people seem to like the shoutbox being at the bottom, i'll ensure that will be an ACP feature in the future (place shoutbox below navbar/below forums/below forum stats).

Here is a way to place your Shoutbox WHERE YOU WANT
Simple edit your forumhome template. Create where you want the variable :
$shout
This will be the place where will appear your shoutbox. But for this, you have to do a last modification :
Go to your Plugin Manager, edit "vBShout [Template Alteration]" and replace $navbar by $shout.
It should be like this
eval('$Shoutbox = "' . fetch_template('forumhome_vbshout') . '";');
$vbulletin->templatecache['FORUMHOME'] = str_replace('$shout','$shout $Shoutbox',$vbulletin->templatecache['FORUMHOME']);
Zero Tolerance
07-29-2005, 12:33 PM
Good idea, but just to clean upa little (sorry, it's a habbit :p), change the plugin to:
eval('$Shoutbox = "' . fetch_template('forumhome_vbshout') . '";');
And simply place the variable '$Shoutbox' in forumhome we're ever you'd like :)

Try uninstalling and reinstalling (by selecting uninstall in the product manager, then re-uploading the XML)

@ Boofo - I just uninstalled and reinstalled using the XML in the zip provided and it's all working fine. Try removing the code, check the table 'shout' doesn't exist, and reinstall. If you get an error on uninstallation saying the table doesn't exist, run this query to create a temp one: (don't forget the mySQL table prefix)
CREATE TABLE `shout` (
`sid` int(15) NOT NULL auto_increment,
`s_by` int(15) NOT NULL default '0',
`s_time` int(15) NOT NULL default '0',

Zero Tolerance
07-29-2005, 09:19 PM
@ Boofo - I'll look into that, a command for a specific shout, you mean like: /prune [shout here]?
@ cuphongle - The system automatically inserts the shoutbox into the template forcebly (sp?) via PHP, using variables/html comments that SHOULD be in the template 'FORUMHOME', try changing the position of the shoutbox, if it works on other skins then they are missing some elements which are needed to place the shoutbox.
- Zero Tolerance
Biker_GA
07-29-2005, 09:23 PM
The Aria style is strange. Where you would think you'd need to input something, it's done someplace complete different.
For example.. I was attempting to add some additional links to the Quick Links button. One would think that the navbar template would be the logical choice. In this case, modifications are required to the header template. Drove me absolutely stark raving mad until I figured it out.
Zero Tolerance
07-29-2005, 09:28 PM
That's probably why then, the $navbar variable is supposed to be in FORUMHOME template as apposed to the header.

Yes, sir, just in case you get the one user who is having a bad day. Gives you a little more control over what is said in the shout box. ;)
Also, the bold button doesn't seem like it shows the bold being turned off when you are entering the message although it is turned off when you submit the message.

Working for me, probably because there is no indication wetherit is on/off you can't tell? Or perhaps it's your font size, at a certain size if bold, you won't see changes. In anycase i made it add a * when bold is active.

You certainly used Shoutbox before. I had the same problem. I solve it with a drop of table shout in phpmyadmin. To avoid this (i don't know if it's possible) the script should check if the table exists or not and then behaves differently.

zero tolerance...u know how i can add a quick reply to a different style?
Go to your Admincp -> Styles & Templates -> Select the style you want to modify -> and edit templates : forumhome_vbshout and forumhome_vbshout_shout. Just save them.
But don't forget, if there's an update of vBShout, you will have to update manually the templates you have changed. Why ? Because the product manager installs templates in the master style and your different styles use its settings except if you customize them.

The problem has been identified, it's due to older mySQL vesions not recocnizing "ENGINE = MyISAM", the download has been changed so the query will execute "TYPE = MyISAM".

That's due to your fixed width, if you look in the template: forumhome_vbshout_shout, change the 100% width value to 90%, it should go away then :)

The ability to display this on the forumdisplay would rule. I installed this on the ForumHome, and it drops user activity in the actual forum and becomes counter productive, however I think if it were shown on the ForumDisplay, they would have a thread list staring at them with different topics, that they would periodically refresh to get new topics, that might inspire them to continue posting while the shoutbox is going. Just a though. I've turned it off currently until I can figure out a way to do this.
With over 20k+ users, a drop in usage is fairly significant.

The nowrap tag is depreciated to my knowledge, atleast i couldn't find it on a HTML tag reference list and XHTML tag reference list on w3schools, wouldn't surprise me really, they're trying to slowly knock out most tags/attributes and make it all css based.
I also split it into 2 TD's so that the shouts were all aligned in a list :)

@ Zero Tolerance...any chance of adding the position "above forums". I know the "below Navagation Bar" is there but I am using the Welcome box hack and the shout box will not show when you select the "below nav bar". I would suspect it is because the welcome ox modifies the nav bar. If its not much hasle that would be great if it is dont fuss with it. You have done a nice job here. Also on an earlier question...anyone know how to add this to CMPS portal?

Take the span end tag and put it before the TD ends, however this would cause a scroll bar along the bottom, which i'm guessing you don't want, just want to make my life difficult =P
Here:
<tr>
<td width="100%" align="left" valign="top">
<div style='width:100%;'>

A new design for smilies display has already been completed in v1.5, it won't be a pop up however, simply because:
A) I hate pop-up's just like any normal person browsing the net :p
B) Thew new way looks cooler :p

How do we prune specific shouts? I realize we use the command "/prune [shout]", but how do we specify which shout?
Any chance we could give all the colors... real names? Or possibly take all of them out but the most basic: red, blue, green, etc.
Also: I think this is a tiny bug: the /me command cannot be used unless it's the first entry in the shout. /me screams! will work... but Stacie cries as /me screams! will not work.

As far as I can see, you can only just clear the shoutbox or clear specific user's posts. /prune acidburn0520 would clear all of your shouts, and I don't think what you're looking for is available (yet?).

I tried removing the code and the Shoutbox ceased to function. So I just left the "Emoticons" URL untitled.
Locate in your forumhome_vbshout template:
<a href='#' id='vbshout_emoticon'><if condition="$vboptions[shout_extra_options]">Emoticons</if></a>
Replace with:
<a href='#' id='vbshout_emoticon'><if condition="$vboptions[shout_extra_options]"></if></a>
Locate and remove in your forumhome_vbshout template:
$Smilie_Build
That's a quick fix... but I'd still prefer to remove the actual code.

@ Loki - It inherits the CSS of your forum
@ Sovereign - To delete a single shout, use the command: /pruneshout [shout], so if someone's message was 'Hi all', you would put: /pruneshout Hi all :)
@ acidburn0520 - Look above, and the /me command is supposed to be used at the beginning of all actions, you can't place it inside a sentance mid-way through.
@ kaihawaii - Look at the banned permissions in the shoutbox options inside your ACP

I do not know if this is possible, but can this shoutbox be used as a tagboard in every user's profile. Where only members of your forum can post in the shoutbox? I have been looking for this very same thing, but found nothing.

@ Ian Emu-UK - Correct, missed some code in a plugin, fixed for v1.5 :)

This Shoutbox is very nice. Two things:
1. If it's possible, a colored square (or something) next to the color code would be useful.
2. Is there any way that this could work with Internet Exploder?
Edit: hmm, I see it doesn't work with Mozilla 1.7.8 either...

Not sure what you mean by number 1, the drop down shows all the hex codes and the text is coloured from that hex code, ie: #FFFFFF is white, and the text would be white, so may not show clearly dependant on your drop down menu css colours.
It works fine in IE as far as i know, atleast it's the only browser i use and it's all working for me, can you be more specific as to what isn't working with IE?
- Zero Tolerance
Hmm.
Well, using Opera, the text isn't colored.
Using IE and Mozilla, it's stuck at " Loading..."

Go to the actual url: yoursite.com/forums/vbshout.php, see if it shows a db error.
Also i don't ensure the JS works with browsers like Opera, i keep to the JS standards, however i just tested in Opera and Netscape (newest versions) and it completely works, apart from the colours in the drop down menu don't show like you said in "Opera", but probably a problem on there side.
- Zero Tolerance
Nope, mysite.com/forum/vbshout.php works fine in both IE and Mozilla.
However, placed on the forum, it's stuck at "loading..." except in Opera.

Sure you've got javascript enabled in both those browsers, or is there a javascript error in either?
- Zero Tolerance
Yes, javascript is enabled.
IE shows an error loading the forum index (which has the shoutbox), but not when loading any forums.
Line: 158
Char: 2
Error: 'this.controlobj' is null or not an object
Code:0
URL: http://www.mysite.com/forum/
Not sure if it's related to vbshout of course.

Hrm, thats the vbulletin_menu.js file, try pressing ctrl+F5 for a hard refresh, if that doesn't do the trick no worries, i'm releasingv1.5 in a moment which has a new visual display element for emoticons. :)
- Zero Tolerance
No trick triggered :) I'll wait for the new version, thanks.

Does the new pending version still load smilies? I'd much prefer a simple popup box that doesn't load 'em until you click it.
As far as what to remove to the question asked above, you also have to remove the script code, or you'll bork the shoutbox. Also, if you just remove the link, the smilies will still load (watch the status bar at the bottom of your browser). But this is all most likely pointless with the new version.

New version released, where you can control the number of smilies shown, also a new better visual display of them :)

I still can't view it with IE and Mozilla, and I get the same error with IE.
Also, it shows as version 1.4 in Installed Products. (i followed the upgrade instructions)

Of course. And "Version: 1.5" is stated in the txts.

Hmm, the XML file contains 1.5 and all the updated templates, try removing the product then re-adding, also ensure you select the correct XML file from the new ZIP file.

Damn, you're right. The archiver program decided to be spontaneous with the extraction.
Yep, this version is fine for me with IE and Mozilla.
Sorry for the confusion. Thanks.

Is it absolutely necessary to uninstall the old product?
It's shame to wipe out all the messages just as my members have started using it every time an improvement is released.
I know it's small, but I've got to complain about something in an otherwise brilliant hack/product :)

Why does forumhome_vbshout template often display in red in the template usage window ? Does it mean that it takes time to load ?

That means it is read from database on each usage, and not cached.

Users that are actually banned can't access the board but groups like waiting email confirmation who you might not want to allow shouting should see something else.
I'm wondering if this is the right wording?

It won't show on every page even if i do that. The code is in the forumhome complete hook, so it will only show on the forums index.
I tryed putting it in the global hook (start and complete) but i ither get an undefined function, or cannot call function again.
