It says "AFTER place this:", so you should place it after what you searched for.

Perhaps its something as simple as a _ after the button code in the postbit?

Bashy you could also move the thanks and groans amounts into the sig file section of the postbit or legacy, whichever you use. It would put them just under the users sig file. If they don't have a sig though, it won't show.

Cheers for the heads up Tulsa,
I have a few that dont have a sig so this wouldnt be much cop..

What i have done for noww to make it a little smaller is removed the
$vbphrase[post_thanks_thanks]: $post[post_thanks_user_amount]
and i have done the same for the groan hack as well...its only removed to lines from the postbit but its a start, i am a little reluctant to doing the other hack atm that the other member posted although i would like it, but i aint too confident in the instructions and i may mess it up

Hi,

thanks for the great hack. I used V3.4 for a few weeks and now upgraded to 4.4 - everything still works but it's not using AJAX as far as i can see. I did no template changes to any of the plugin templates and already cleaned my browser cache - any idea?

The only think I can think of is that you dont allow your browser to use scripting. Try another browser.

every other AJAX-Function works well in the Forums so can't be this i think.

@Abe1: Strange things happen after installing 4.4 - after a while nothing did work (no new thanks were recorded) after serveral tries i deinstalled, restored a backup and reinstalled 3.4 again - works fine. Seems like there's something wrong with 4.4

i do not want a postbit added when someone thanked... so i change thankspostbit to :

<fieldset class="fieldset">
<legend>The Following User(s) Says Thank You For This Useful Post:<if condition="$bbuserinfo[usergroupid] == 6">&nbsp|&nbsp<a href="showthread.php?do=post_thanks_remove_all&amp;p=$post[postid]" onclick="post_thanks_remove_all_$post[postid](); return false;">$vbphrase[post_thanks_remove]</a>

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="3" border="0">

<tr>

<td>$liste_user</td>
</tr>

</fieldset>

and move <!-- Start Post Thank You Hack -->
$post_thanks
<!-- End Post Thank You Hack --> to above signature in postbit.

will that changes make any error to your hack??

Thanks!

Wonderful hack, really something I've been looking for.

I've got a few small problems though, because I'm trying to keep my forum a bit minimalistic (my taste ;)) I've been trying to put the list of users who thanked into a popup menu, similiar to the one you get if you click on a username.

To do this I've added a new button besides the "Reputation" one which needs to be clicked to see this menu.

The code I've used for this:
After "$post[iplogged]"<!-- Start Modified Post Thank You Hack -->
$post_thanks
<!-- End Modified Post Thank You Hack -->

And in the template post_thanks_box I replaced the non-<script> content with
<!-- Start Modified Post Thank You Hack -->
<!-- post $post[postid] info menu -->

<div class="vbmenu_popup" id="infomenu_$post[postid]_menu" style="display:none">
<table cellpadding="4" cellspacing="1" border="0">
<tr>
<td class="userinfo" id="post_thanks_box_$post[postid]">
$post_thanks_box
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</div>

<span id="infomenu_$post[postid]"><a href=""><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/info.gif" alt="Post Info" border="0" /><script type="text/javascript"> vbmenu_register("infomenu_$post[postid]", true); </script></span>
<!-- End Modified Post Thank You Hack -->In addition I've also removed the $spacer's out of the 'post_thanks_postbit_legacy' template.

It's working fairly well, I've got a few problems that I couldn't find a solution for though:
How can I 'extend' the hack some so I'll able to hide the info.gif image if there are no users who thanked for a post.
And how can I make sure the list will be updated when a user clicks the "Thanks" button? I'm afraid I destroyed the AJAX somewhere but can't figure out where it was.

Thanks a lot for your help, hopefully there are also other users interested in this.

Edit; reduced the template edits by one, still hoping for someone to help me fixing the bugs!
maybe you can use if with $postthanks

Hi Abe :) What code do we need to change to get the "The Following User Says Thank You..." message to appear on top of the 'Thank You table instead of on the side?

HuangA

Suggestion:
Can you please make the AJAX functions into a .js file; make the AJAX functions take postid as parameter; and pass parameter from the links instead of making copies of the function for each of the post on screen? This will DRASTICALLY reduce the bandwidth consumption by this hack as they do not require to be duplicated each time a post is displayed on the page.

Copy the post_thanks_postbit_legacy templatge and use it to replace the whole post_thanks_postbit template.

I just started working with javascript and don't know how to use about 99.9% of it. I will try to make the javascript code come up only once. I can still leave it in a template but that only shows the tamplate once.

Thanks for following up the request :) here's a little starter on how to make it so that you only really need it once. I've edited the postbit_button template to the following (it still comes up multiple times, but it only really need to be created 'once' at the top because its a function with parameters). It doesn't work yet because I am not familiar with call back functions, and I can't figure out how to pass the pid variable to the call back functions. If there's any AJAX guru or javascript expert who can help fix the rest, we can safely move the majority of the code to a separate .js file which can be cached by user browser and we can reduce the bandwidth usage by a lot (imagein the segment of code appear only once in a cached js VS appearing in html for each post appearing on page).

<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
function post_thanks_give( pid )
{
do_thanks_button = new vB_AJAX_Handler(true)
do_thanks_button.onreadystatechange = function () {
alert('state ready pid: ' + pid);
alert('state: ' + do_thanks_button.handler.readyState);
if (do_thanks_button.handler.readyState == 4 && do_thanks_button.handler.status == 200)
{
fetch_object('post_thanks_button_' + pid).innerHTML = do_thanks_button.handler.responseText
}
}
do_thanks_button.send('showthread.php?do=post_than ks_button_ajax&p='+pid)

do_thanks_add = new vB_AJAX_Handler(true)
do_thanks_add.onreadystatechange = function () {
if (do_thanks_add.handler.readyState == 4 && do_thanks_add.handler.status == 200)
{

}
}
do_thanks_add.send('showthread.php?do=post_thanks_ add_ajax&p='+pid)
}

function post_thanks_remove_all( pid )
{
do_thanks_button = new vB_AJAX_Handler(true)
do_thanks_button.onreadystatechange = function () {
if (do_thanks_button.handler.readyState == 4 && do_thanks_button.handler.status == 200)
{
fetch_object('post_thanks_button_'+pid).innerHTML = do_thanks_button.handler.responseText
}
}
do_thanks_button.send('showthread.php?do=post_than ks_button_add_ajax&p='+pid)

}
do_thanks_remove_all.send('showthread.php?do=post_ thanks_remove_all_ajax&p='+pid)

}
do_thanks_button.send('showthread.php?do=post_than ks_button_add_ajax&p='+pid)

do_thanks_remove_user = new vB_AJAX_Handler(true)
do_thanks_remove_user.onreadystatechange = function () {
if (do_thanks_remove_user.handler.readyState == 4 && do_thanks_remove_user.handler.status == 200)
{
fetch_object('post_thanks_box_'+pid).innerHTML = do_thanks_remove_user.handler.responseText

<noscript>
<a href="showthread.php?do=post_thanks_add&amp;p=$post[postid]"> <img src="images/buttons/post_thanks.gif" alt="Thanks" border="0" /></a>

Problems with the above so far: the call back doesn't work, so it doesn't properly achieve the ajax effect, and the remove functions doesn't work for whatever reason... do NOT, I repeat do NOT deploy / test the above on your production board. Hopefully someone can fine tune it to work and this hack would be perfect ;)

Why would it click 'thanks'? Only if you have a userID will the thanks link show. So if google is searching, the that button and link wont be there.

Abe> Search engines gets the same HTML as guests (unless there are hacks that forwards it to archive); however, as opposed to guests, Search Engines sees it at raw source level, doesn't matter whether or not the icon is 'displayed' on screen. And it sees in the HTML there's a link, so it follows. Adding the rel="nofollow" in the a href tag tells it to not follow the link all together. I've gone ahead and added it to my forum now. :)

As to WHY it still clicks it, it may be a cached version of your page or something. It should stop after a while...

Abe1 hi, it's not a BUG but.....
When using this hack you can:
1. Click "Add reputation"
2. and then click Thanks button.
BUT:
1. when you already clicked Thanks button
2. You can't add reputation.
May be add option "Check if already added reputation" ?

And another sugestion.....
Some users are "maniaks" and click thanks button for peoples who helped them once time in many different posts.
It it possable to link with a $vbulletin->options['reputationrepeat'] for chek?

Dmitriy

As for the second, what would that help? You can give rep points only once per post for using the thanks button.

about first.... well.....My users can add reputation and then click Thanks button (it add reputation too) for a one post.... But when we try to click Thanks and after add reputation (with own forum functions) they get error:
"You have already add reputation bla-bla-bla"
Can you add checking for "smart" users that they can't add reputation and then click Thanks?

About second...... for now i do not know how say it with different words :(

Can you add checking for "smart" users that they can't add reputation and then click Thanks?

About second...... for now i do not know how say it with different words :(
My English has very low level.
I understand now. I will add it to the list.

I hope that, and you agree with me that if I add it, spiders wouldn't click it. don't you?

I do believe so. Spiders -- espeically google -- are taught to not follow the rel="nofollow" links. I really don't see why its following it other than a cached version of the link. Double check your html on the frontend as whatever Google's access level is (AKA, guest, logout; unless you've applied other hacks) and view the source to see if things are coming up correctly, and if it does, then ignore it for a few days and see if things change for the better.

Is there a way I can make an option in a member's user cp to choose whether to view the 'thanks' added to a post or not? Some of my members on slower connections are telling me on a post with a lot of thanks, it is slowing their page load down. So I'd like to give them the option to not view the thanks area.
Thanks!

You can do it yourself.

1) Make a new profile option with a yes or no option.

2) open the post_thanks_postbit and put if tags around the whole thing.

Okay I did that, but I set the profile field to be a single selection radio button, with a yes or no option to show 'thanks' on posts - and it works, but both options hide the thanks - when I set it to 'no', meaning to not show the thanks, it does not show them, then when I set it to 'yes' which means it should show the thanks, it still does not show them.

I guess I need some sort of==yes sort of thing in there - I just dont know enough about php to figure it out myself yet - thank you so much for helping me with this!

No, you dont need the equalls. If the option is set to know, it should equal zero which will make the if not show.

1) You can chenge the button.

2) You can edit the phrases.

Not hard at all to do.

Got a question about the postbit

It says "Thanks" x
Then right below it says
"Has been thanked x times in x posts".
Is the first "Thanks" how many thanks the person has given out?

The first thanks is like posts. Just like posts shows the amout of posts a user posted, thanks shows how many thanks a user gave.

Greetings, Abe1. First of all, thank You for creating and constantly updating this wonderful hack!

I have couple of questions...
As far as i understood, reputation points given by "thanks" are separated from usergroup reputation premissions, ie: if user, who is not premitted tho add reputation points, press "thanks" button, author of thanked post will still get RP... Is that right?
When i enable x RP per "thanks" feature, users with lots of thanks still have no RP. Only "thanks" maded after enabling the feature are counted. How can i convert all existing users' thanks to reputation points?

You can't just do this. You would have to use the count and give rep points and reasons. I can't realy help you with this.

Like I said, it can be done. Just you need someone in your mysql to do it and make sure it works good. I don't have the time to do such a thing right now.

Hi,

I have just updated my Post Thank-hack from a previous version. It has allways worked perfectly but I just wanted my users to remove the thank, now they can.

But another problem comes up. Look at the pictures. When I push the Thank-button the header of the site or something shows up. You can see it, it looks very awful. But when I just push the F5 button the header goes away under the post and it looks normal again.

I use vBadvanced but it has never been a problem

Well it is a little annoying problem I hope someone can fix!

Anyways thanks for this awsome hack :bunny:

Hi,

As I have a christian website, I use this hack as a "praying" button.... you see, people at our website, have prayer requests and we always have users replying you know "praying" so with this button, instead of a "thank you" i modify it with a custom button that says "praying" and users find it really neat. :) (just wanted to share I we use this hack at our site)

I will definetly be installing this hack :)

very useful hack

I have some problem. My board has about 1,000,000 posts, and I am trying to "FIND ALL THANKS" (search.php?do=findallthanks), it takes very long (almost a minute) to generate the result (with only few thanks that I have)

Showing results 1 to 3 of 3
Search took 53.35 seconds; generated 1 minute(s) ago

Should that be improved? I think it's fairly easy (and fast) searching in post_thanks table, or index some of the information?

Hello,

The hack is great, and I am trying to get the best use of it.

REQUEST:
I would like to have a confirmation before sending the thanks. Says when a user click on Thanks, there is a pop-up asking that you really want to thank, with some guideline on how the post should be, in order to get thanked.

This will reduce people from clicking thanks, without understanding meaning of the action => you have a better/qualify statistic.

Also, allow member to add some comments to go with the thanks, that'd be nice.

I also want to be able to get a list of thanked posts in some given forum (find thanks where forum = xxx)

How do you think?

Almost one-one else would like the pop-up.

Abe, thanks for the great mod, love it. Is there anyway for board admins like myself who have already cluttered the user info to the left of the post and make it:

Thanked x Times

instead

Thanks: x
Thanked x Times in x Posts

Many thanks again for the mod :) Cheers

Abe, on this one and the groan hack, (still my personal favorite), when we updgrade to 3.6 once it goes gold, are we going to be able to port this hack and the thanks/groans received/given? Or are we simply going to lose those?

Request

Currently I am also using the warning system, if anyone abuses the thanks button by thanking everyone for no reason they get warned.

Then here is the problem/request

I now have to click on the users profile, find all thanks they have given, and delete them 1 by 1. Very painful.

I would find it much easier if there was an option in the admincp that would allow you to prune all thanked posts / all thanks given by username.

Also, When a user has been thanked many times, Sometime I would like to remove someones thanks, but currently you can only remove yours or ALL. It would be handy to remove a selected thanks.

Hopefully you will consider these ideas for the next update.

I'm sure everyone would find them really handy to have for this already great release.

Thanks

Ok, I do have a small problem. What is the $post_thanks string to show how many thanks a post has received? Just the post, not the overall total. No matter what I do I seem to end up with a user's total thanks and I can't see the correct phrase in the XML file either. If you could name the $post_groan string that does the same thing for groans, I would be very grateful. :)

And thank you for an exceptionally useful hack.

Ohhhhhhhhh wait a second, I misread it. It only counts how many thanks a post gets but you can't actually show how many thanks a post gets? It's not phrased. Or if it's not good for the database to be able to use per-post counts instead of over-all counts.

Would it be outrageous to promise that you will be showered with a thousand young maidens and the people will line the streets with rose petals wherever you walk from this point onwards if you phrased thanks/growls per post? That would be absolutely fantastic, on mah knees beggin'. :D :D :D :D :D

Thank you for your reply, Abe1! :) There is a link in every members profile that will display all the posts he/she has written, that have later been thanked by other members... But what we would love to have is a link that displays all the posts she herself has thanked, letting us find the posts that this member has found useful.

I also had another feature request from one of my members:

Hm, perhaps this is not working as it should for some reason. Probably because of me. Or is it because it's 3.6RC3? Seems to be working fine though.

Right above all the thanks, according to your instructions, I have:

$vbphrase[post_thanks_thanks]: $post[post_thanks_user_amount]

This is currently displaying how many posts that user has given in total across the whole forum. Below that I have:

<if condition="$post[post_thanks_thanked_times_on] == 1">
$vbphrase[post_thanks_time_post]
<else />
<if condition="$post[post_thanks_thanked_posts_on] == 1">

<else />
<phrase 1="$post[post_thanks_thanked_times]" 2="$post[post_thanks_thanked_posts]">$vbphrase[post_thanks_times_posts]</phrase>
</if>

Which is currently showing how many thanks that user has received in total from across the whole forum, and how many posts they received the thanks from.

Nothing is allowing me to show how many thanks an individual post has received.

Thanks. Ran the first 3 recounters - made no difference. Running the last one and with 121,000 members, it's still going after about 10 hours.
2 questions. First, is this the recounter which will make the difference?
And second, is it possible to speed up the counter? Or do something else to fix this? Would hate to have to uninstall.

I ran them in order, the error does not show up on every page.

My server is rebooted daily in the early hours. The 4th recounter had been running for over 16 hours before it hung because of the reboot. And the problem persists. It's definitely the Thank You hack cos when I disable it the problem goes away.

Update : I re-ran the first three and again it made no difference.
I have switched off the thank you hack for now.

Hi Abe1. Thanks for this great feature, it is very popular on my board.

One thing we have noticed, is that the restriction on giving reputation is not always taken into account in relation to this mod... If I post a Thank you, I am not able to give the author of the post further reputation points for that post. (Until I have given reputation to someone else, as I have configured my vBulletin) But if I give the author reputation points, and then try to post a Thank you - then the restriction is not taken into consideration, and I am able to give the author rep two times

... I hope this isnt't too vague..? Not a BIG problem, but I think you like to know about these things...

Thanks again!

I hope to work on the rep system for this hack soon. But it will only be released to the version for vb3.6.

Something is majorly wrong and I can't figure it out. I had this working perfectly on my old forum, but then when I had to reinstall fresh, it doesn't work anymore on the new installation.

First off, no button appears. I viewed source and saw that it was not printing the $post_thanks_button_image variable. It starts off with an a href and ends with an /a with NO IMG SRC in between.

So I tried just copying the code for $post_thanjs_button_image into the $post_thanks_button variable...and the button shows up.

But the AJAX is all messed up for some reason.

Can you PM me for some help?

Same here... very odd.
I have installed and ran this hack on my board since it was intro'd.
I installed a fresh vBB 3.55, installed the hack made the edits and uploaded the product.... no button :(

Is it possible this is a 3.5.5 issue?
Is it possible to hard code the button into the postbit template instead?

Actually, it is working now. I have no idea why but I:

1) Uninstalled the product.
2) cleared ALL the remaining templates (there seemed to be about three leftover...search for thanks in your templates)
3) Redownloaded the zip install file.
4) Reinstalled (making sure to keep "yes" to overwrite checked)

Now it is working...very odd.

I really like this hack but it took up too much space on the pages and my users ended up not liking it...

If it just had a thanked 20 times and user could click on the 20 and then see who thanked him if he wanted.. It took too much space up as some would get 50 or more thx...

Oh well cool hack and well done.

Yeah, I could see this being an issue on large forums.

Its not a super large forum but it is growing and we get 600 yo 800 posts a day.. It just started being too much showing all the handles of the posters thanking and I had the groans also installed? This is a very nice hack - it just did not work out on my site?

I may come up with a way to hide them. It would be released for the vb3.6 version though.

I think Carl's idea is a really good one and would love to see it implimented.

That aside, is there any idea when a vB 3.6.3 compatible version will be realeased? I could not see if the current version is compatible.

Thanks,

John

I`m not shure is this the right place to ask but...

I have installed Post Thank You Hack 2.0 GOLD on my 3.5 forum but i get this error when i merge posts into one thread or separate threads:

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /includes/class_postbit.php(251) : eval()'d code on line 125

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /includes/class_postbit.php(251) : eval()'d code on line 135

How can i fix this? I reinstalled the hack but it removed all thanks from all my users. And this is my second question: can i bring back the oldest counts?

Just some questions, WIth this can you hide stuff with this mod and when the user clicks thanks the user cna see what's hidden
and also does it display how many thanks the user has recieved and how many it's given/
CAn you also check all the posts the user has been thanks in?

BraindGee

Would it be possible to only allow the OP to thank?

Reason im asking is because ive been thinking of creating a question forum, where questions are submitted by a form, and replied to by people that know the answer. However, I'd kinda like it if only the person that posted the question can thank the person, or people that replied. Think this would prevent thank you boosting by having anyone who read it to thank him/her.

What can I do to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Hi being fairly new to all of this editing a template scares me

in postbit AND postbit_lagacy:

find:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
$vbphrase[posts]: $post[posts]
--------------------------------------------------------------------

AFTER place this:

emphasis on the "AFTER place this" do i press enter and place it in a new line or do i add it directly after the las character?

any link or reading on editing templates would be much appreciated

Ncturnal
12-29-2007, 04:05 PM
It doesn't matter. The system doesn't read the spaces or carriage returns in the code.

This:

$vbphrase[posts]: $post[posts]

is the same as this:

$vbphrase[posts]: $post[posts]

and this:

$vbphrase[posts]:

$post[posts]

I usually do 3 carriage returns and enter the code which a open line above and below so the code is easy to spot if I ever need to modify it. Hope that helps.

Actually, I cannot find any of the codes in the Instructions.txt file. Is this hack not compatible with VB 4.2?
