Here is some feedback geek.

The new update 4.01 no longer gives the error, and also replaces the text, but not with the replacement text, but with blank.

My default setting for replacement is
<a href='$gal_link' target='_blank' class='DEF'>$gal_text</a>

It inserts a space char, instead.

...AH!!! Sorry. Cought myself before hitting post. I ran debug/rebuild, and now it works! ALL WORKS!

YIKES. I get this when one of my keywords comes up:

What did I miss or do wrong. I went through all the file edits manually, maybe I missed one or did one wrong?

The pnly part that could cause a possible conflict would be that global.php includes the GAL include file (but wouldnt use it unless a fuinction was called). That alone should cause a problem but I am more than happpy to look into it if I can get some details PMed to me.

Right - have been working on a couple issues and I seem to have resolved them. I am just starting to put together an update (its pretty minor). But it addresses:
Apostraphes in title breaking popups
Keywords in titles messing up matches (if you have another keyword in a title, it will break it... think Lionel or someone brought this up this morning).
Sorting out GAS interop. This will require a new release of GAS though it will really only be a file change. I am planning that the synopsis will be the description.
There is still a bug with the offset feature where no matter what its set to, the value is always 1.

I was hoping to repackage tonight but Im a bit knacked so Im going to skip until tomorrow as I dont want to miss anything.

Hi Geek, this what I got so far from latest upgrade. The biggest one is GAS into GAL not working. Before I used to insert even with blank page. What's more, all those GAL into GAS from before upgrade disappeared.

Lionel - have you tried debgu->rebuild? WHats odd is there really are not phrases in the stats (most words are hard coded except for the months), you can control font size through bbcode or the inline css, ignore thread is working here for me, not sure what u mean by popups not working in fireqorks, as mentioned a couple posts back - I have the gas integration done.
Both packages should be updated tonight.

ps - dont know what GAK is - I havent made that one yet ;)

So your hack does something to restict the index.php of photopost.

But your install is frustrating when your trying to debug. Its awsome otherwise but I need to see what happend where and the upgrade etc I not not 100% sure what text goes where.

just run the installer, click the upgrade or install path... then at the bottom of the next page will be a link for the Manual install listing. This will take you to a listing of each file change in order.

Package updated. Upgrade instructions at bottom of readme. Minor really but fixes everyones bugs they mentioned. GAS is about to get updated to with a minor file change to sort out the gas/gal integration

I upgraded to 4.02, and everything seems to be working okay except for one thing:

The Simple Link replacement works, the Popup with no title works, but the Popup with a Title yields these results:

I got that odd situation where a dash and an accent in the same autolink seems to be too much for GAL. When I remove accent it works. Otherwise no.

I am not sure if this has been addressed before: suppose let us consider the following words: "Rumi: The Hidden Music written by Rumi"

Now, i created two links using GAL4.01

One link was for "Rumi: The Hidden Music", i choose sponsor style for this word.
The other link was for "Rumi", i choose glossary style for this word.

Now, when i tried to show it in the thread, there is a conflict at words "Rumi: The Hidden Music", it shows up all the replacement code, which makes the post unreadable. It works fine if i remove the second link created for "Rumi". Can this be cured ?

The second thing i am not getting right is: How do i make the popup stay on screen just like in your demo thread, where we hover the mouse over the word "MMA" and then we can move our mouse to click the link shown within the popup. Right now when i move my mouse from the word, the popup vanises.

Also - just noticed a small typo in the read me for the GALBox that is preventing it from staying open so a user can roll over it. Ill update the package tonight with the change (and a revised cron job as there is a typo in it too).

For those having problems with the popups staying open (this was mentioned a couple days ago)... Replace your GALBox div in your header template with this one:

the foreach error in stats is happening because there are no stats recorded. I am trying to get a revised package that will simply display a 'no info exists' block instead with a couple other minor amends metioned a couple posts back - but in a nutshell - just pretend the error is really saying 'no stats exist' ;)

Ordinals seem to be working only if the style used for both words is same. In the above case about Rumi, i am using differenet styles for both words as stated above.

In the fifth post by thecoopes, please have a look at the orange word : (William Tyndale), the word has a link inside the popup. This orange style was created out of sponsor style. i have checked up with sponsor style too, its not staying up as intended.

Doesn't seem to run. However, all my links were pre-GAL4.0. I went and just added expire dates. Could that be why?

You need to have the option to integrate with GAL ticked in your GAS settings. You also need to put in the usergroupids that can add GALS in your GAS settings.

t3media- better to post the GAL q's in the GAL thread :) however you can get the exact same effect by using the default yellow box style with the popup with title (prefix set to sponsor) and some basic bbcode.

GAS will use the 'default' category in the global settings when adding GALs so set that to whatever you want gal entries to go for. The GAS synopsis is what is used as the description.
Dont leave the usergroup setting in GAS blank - that doesnt work. You must be explicit with the usergroups. This is by design as a safety fearture to prevent everyone overrunning your board with crap GALs (this, the, a, etc...).

As farr as that design - set the box style to yellow, body to none, and title to none. You could just do a new css that is just font-color (dont specify border).

if you are not using the DB cache, then the only time GALs can expire is when the GAL datastore gets rebuilt which can mean the expirations are not very strict.

Try turning it on and give me some feedback.

There were 2 typos in version 4.02 that I have fixed:

1- the GALbox DIV used for the popup was missing a " that made the popup disappear if a user tried to mouse onto it. If your popup is not staying open, check the readme in the new package for the correct GALbox DIV that you put in your header template.

2- There was a typo in the cron job that was causing update problems. Its fixed now. To apply this fix, just replace your cron/GAL_cron.php file with the one found in the new package.

All other files and such are the exact same.

Geek, I finally managed to get around to trying this out after installing it so long ago. I found a couple of things here..
If I update a category at all, the auto link doesn't actually change in my posts. If I have a GAL set up as a Glossary (with no title) and later assign the category to Sponsor (with title) the GAL still acts as if it's a Glossary item being that it does not update with a title.

Also, I have set up the word "KTB" to be a GAL but it doesn't work. Every instance of KTB turns bold and red and nothing else. I tried changing it to different categories but had no luck.

Sorry if all of these have been pointed out already, I searched and didn't find much information on it.

Fabrizo: Forgot to put an error check in there - it essentially means that there are no stats to display. Pretend that error says "there are no stats to show" ;)

KT - What happens if you click Debig->Rebuild? THat should sort the problem out. As far as the KTB - you arent doing it then searching for it so the word is highlighlted right? If so then the highlight will prevent the GAL.

Put it in a category that doesnt track clicks and it will link direct.

Check the width property. If its too low, the text will wrpa. The other thing you could do is reduce your fontsize or turn off word wrapping via the css style.

Hey pguy - I suspect that this is a php problem as it seems to work on some versions and not on others.
The preg_replace gets an array passed to it in the order of replacement - even though it is supposed to replace in the array order - sometimes this doesnt happen. Sorry :(

OK we ran the installer and it went amazingly smooth.

Is there anyway to make the popup message popup ABOVE the mouse? When the popup message comes on the screen below the trigger words the mouse is in the way of part of the message and it's very annoying :(

found the bug. It was simply an unchecked empty aray (epty if no results impressions were present). DOnt know why this didnt come up in beta ?!?

Anyhow... Its fixed. Download the latest package and replace your functions_gal.php

Bonee - did you enter the CSS suggested in the readme? In other words: yellow box?? You dont need to edit all <td>'s - that would be a serious butt pain.

I just checked the offset and it looks like its working to me. Try clicking debug->rebuild (I had to do that for the settings to propagate).

First of all, thanks a lot for this great hack. The fun already started reading the initial post, I LMAO :)

Everything went smooth when I finally decided to read the manual (I used to think that was a women thing ;) )

I would like to request for a feature that just disables or enables the link function for any usergroup. In my eyes the current solution is a bit a work around. For example I don't want registered users to see the links anyway, I do want unregistered users (search engines) to see the links. Any chance you can add this to the hack (because it's great for SEO) or is there a possibility to do it with the current code and am I missing something?

Hey Tom, Check your header template for the GALBox div tag. I checked your html and cant find it anywhere. You are also getting js errors saying it cant find the object. Chances are that you accidently removed it from your template or introduced a new style and maybe didnt remember to port it over.

I got the following probs:

-The links and also the boxes are invisible, i can see only the text, but the links work. I pasted the css code into the header template, just before $navbar.

-I guess it´s normal but on the "Display" page, the stats for "Standard Links" and "Glossary" just return "overview".

Im not sure what you mean by 'invisible' nor what you mean about putting the css in the header template.

You should put the GALbox <div> tag in the header template and add optionally add the css to your additional css definitions box in your admincp.

No stats will display if there are no records to show. If you have links that are being tracked for stats but they are not showing - than most likely your throttle is set pretty low and the cron job is taking care of the stats.

Both of these are discussed in more detail in the readme. If you can - post a link as it is easier to see the problem you are having.

It most likely occured because you had 2 instances of the key that the GISH installer was searching for (almost always a result of previously modifying the file). However its no big deal. Heck - its will be twice as easy to find you GAL settings now ;)

Really - all you have to do is edit your admincp/index.php file... search for GAL and remove one of the blocks.

Superb news on the sponsors beating down your door. In many peoples opinions, this system is significantly better for sponsors than a banner system as it is better targeted and a bit subversive. Me? I think it kicks ass.

Roll on the GUSH system that will allow you to set up an automatic shop to sell keywords and/or GAB banners :)

Upgrade went fine but had a few "Fatal error: Call to undefined function: process_gal_text() in blah/blah/includes/functions_showthread.php on line 651 and Fatal error: Call to undefined function: persist_gal_impressions() in blah/blah/showthread.php on line 1939" after creating the categories, styles, test autolink, etc and saving the settings.
After reading some previous post I assume it has something to do with global.php. The installer did not upgrade global.php nor did it list it as a manual edit. It's not in the gish folders at all. Do you have the code needed for the function definitions in global.php

Upgrade went fine but had a few "Fatal error: Call to undefined function: process_gal_text() in blah/blah/includes/functions_showthread.php on line 651 and Fatal error: Call to undefined function: persist_gal_impressions() in blah/blah/showthread.php on line 1939" after creating the categories, styles, test autolink, etc and saving the settings.
After reading some previous post I assume it has something to do with global.php. The installer did not upgrade global.php nor did it list it as a manual edit. It's not in the gish folders at all. Do you have the code needed for the function definitions in global.php

Im not sure what you mean by 'invisible' nor what you mean about putting the css in the header template.

You should put the GALbox <div> tag in the header template and add optionally add the css to your additional css definitions box in your admincp.

No stats will display if there are no records to show. If you have links that are being tracked for stats but they are not showing - than most likely your throttle is set pretty low and the cron job is taking care of the stats.

Both of these are discussed in more detail in the readme. If you can - post a link as it is easier to see the problem you are having.

The links are invisible because they have the same color as the background. But i gave every possible color tag on Yellow.

I placed the DIV code into the header and the CSS into the "additional css defininitions.

Those 3 geeky styles i added show up correctly in the ACP but i can?t see any geek style definitions in the source code, except the ones i added manually.

Did find one little mis-code in the GAL_admin.php, in the 'stats' section:
error GAL_admin.php line around 2104 (note the "&" before the forumkey variable)

funnily enough wirewolf - I stumbled across these yesterday working on the stats system for GAB. I was quite shocked to see no one had flagged them before. I also noticed a couple other minor issues sith it as well which I will most likely put off until either GUSH is released or I port this to vb3.5.

Tradjick - the problem isnt with the popup styles, its with the link style. I assume you are using the DEFS CSS I provided as an example in the readme. This is what you would have placed in your additional CSS section. In there is the colour that is defining your links as the same colour as the background.

Hey t3, Im on the road again so its difficult for me to investigate - however I am pretty sure that it does work. Just double check and make sure that the profile field is set to a valid option and that it contains the textual value.

In other words, it your profile field is a combo box with the options yes and no, that the text yes is what you put in the value field. I made the mistake of putting in 1 when I needed to put in 'No thanks, ads suck' as that was what the textual value was for the combo box I defined (hope that makes sense!).

I've run some test on the performance BEFORE and AFTER.

My test was conducted on an average page, and I recorded the "Page generated stats". I had 191 replacements, and using the DB cache.

The results were page loading time on average more than doubled, from an average of 0.5 secs, to 1.2 secs. This is an unacceptable increase, so despite really liking what this has to offer, I'm going to have pass on using it. If anyone can think of a way to make the performance better I'd love to take another look at this - unfortunately you can't get round the fact that for every new link added it has to check it against every word in the text, so in my case 1500 words x 191 links = 286,500 comparisons being made. Even on my dedicated dual-Xeon server it takes a big performance hit.

I wonder if a different approach can be taken, along the lines of how some sites you have words linked to ads - they don't seem to do anything with the html itself, but must be some clever javascript at work - perhaps this could be the answer.

All the same, praise to The Greek, for all his hard work, and if your only using this on a handful of links, I think there would be no problem in doing this - it's only when you want to have 100+ links you'll start to slow down signifcantly :(

Looks like a bug... "Box style" (box_style) setting does not take when adding a new category. The category can be edited to fix it though.

You didn't envision people using it with more than 190 replacements? I would expect it to be very common to have more than that once you get rolling with it.

GAL 4 is substantially slower than GAL 3! It's an absolute show stopper. Even a dual Xeon system is brought to it's knees with hundreds of replacements.

In addition to adding extra features, did you mostly switch from simple string replacements to using regular expressions - or is there some other reason that it is substantially slower than the previous version?

Other than turning off the DB Cache and removing some replacements, what else can be done to speed things up?

How do I turn off GAL4 completely (disabled) without un-installing it? I don't see an option in the admin area.

Can replacements be disabled rather than removed?

The large amount of CPU time seems to be spent in the regular expression searching of preg_replace().

Since 99.9% of the time, the replacement text is not present in any given post, how about pre-processing the list of replacements "text" fields to see if a simple string search using the quicker stristr() function finds the text in the post before adding it to the find/replacement array to be used by "the CPU hog" preg_replace() function? I would then expect the preg_replace() to usually only be working with a few search terms or less.

I think this would speed things up a lot when using hundreds of replacements.

The actual processing of the preg_replace is almost identical to the previous version (Especially if not using the DB cache). In fact, off the top of my head it IS the same.

Lets say that you have 190 GALS to check, you would then need to run 190 stristr´s THEN run the preg_replace on the results (for each post in the thread). Whether this has any cost implications, I couldnt say. Seems to me the ultimate solution would be to find a way to GAL the page results instead of on a post by post basis. The problem with doing that (as it is easily done) is the increased risk of GALing stuff you dont want GALed. If that could be done, you could cut the average preg_replace cost by an average 15 times.
If you want to give it a try, run the process_text function on the postbits after they are created.

As I mentioned before, I didnt envision 190 replacements at a go though I guess can easily see it happening now. The previous version would give you about as much overhead as this one would so I dont think it really has much to do with that.
Ill look into cost implications of the stristr or strpos when I start to migrate this to 3.5 however I think the real benefit would be by GALing the results instead of the post text.

I've tried searching this thread and can't find anything... I want to remove the hyperlink.. disable it, I only want the popups... I've tried removing the href but then the colour and the underline disapears, what is the quick fix for this?

this is what i did:

1. picked my nose and read your instructions
2. installed with gish
3. had to manually edit 1 admincp file
4. copied over the edited files from your gish dump
5. followed the rest of the instructions
6. i made a new display under "today" with the settings u see in the attachment 3
7 then in the attachment #2, thats the results

problem: the ads/test is showing up like its transparent or something. on other parts of the page, on the today text, its coming out wierd. theres no yellow box or anything around the text. let me know if im doing this right or if there is something up.

user goes to subscription page. purchases the contextual linkage option, and i set what they are getting, what kind of plan, like...example

1 context link with drop down and title bar for 5 days- $5000
1 context link with drop down, no title bar for 5 days - $2500
4 text link with drop down and title bar for 5 days - $19000

so they choose their plan, lets do the 4 text links one, then once they pay for the plan through paypal (ofcourse), then the IPN takes em back and boom, now they purchased this ad space. now, they goto their UserCP maybe, and have a field to enter their 4 text ads in a slot, with drop down and title bar category.

then after 5 days, the plan expires, and the ads get removed.

is this possible o holy one?

Guys... this will not work with vb3.5 however upgrading to 3.5 will not erase the hack - it just will stop working. You wont lose any of the data and the port for 3.5 of this version is too far off now.
Even if you upgraded to vb3.5 and this didnt work ... as soon as the port was released, all your old links would start working again.

900 is a hell of a lot! I would have anticipated server load problems with that many! (BTW I am playing with some ideas to optimize even more).

No server problems, or noticeable slow-downs actually. We run a book forum and whenever a certain novel or author is mentioned, your hack does its part with no problem. This hack is the MVP of the community and I'm glad I don't have to re-enter all the values again. I'd do it again if I have to, but I'm glad don't have to. :)

I know. That's what they said at Vbulletin.com, and that's why you're seeing a lot of re-releases of hacks for 3.5. If it wasn't for the plug-in/hook feature, I wouldn't bother, but support for pre-3.5 versions of Vbulletin will drop gradually as more and more people install 3.5. I'm not gonna upgrade until Geek's Autolinker is ready.

Hey man... Cool little thing you pointed to there. Yes, it is possible with GAL but would require very minor modifications. I wish I could say I could do it... but Im gonads to the wall with projects right now.

Maybe post something in modification requests... I would be happy to help someone through it (as long as I didnt have to do every little tidbit for them). Could be a cool mod of a mod :)

Ok. I found out the problem.

The reason why it wasnt showing the CSS box for the autolinks was due to the # of chars.

For some reason, while it would still show the characters, after a certain amount(?) it prevents the css from showing.

Is there a particular area/file i should look in to increase this character limit?

It does allow pictures so stiff on :)
(descriptions allow for bbcode and html)

Global- maybe the field size?!? Actually, that is all stored in the datastore so there isnt really a limit. Saying that - I would strongly advise you to use the class and put the CSS in your style section of the CSS as it dramatically cuts down on the page HTML output and renders faster.

Axi - make sure you are using the DB instead of the cache and click debug->rebuild that is almost always the problem (and make sure your box and styles are set to something valid).

oh, BTW - a port to 3.5 is not far off. I think the initial code is done and now I just have to make the plugin and installer. Those are pretty minor as this didnt really have many file changes to begin with. I was hoping to improve on the code a bit - however I think ill just start with the port so I can feel like I am making progress to 3.5 (I feel like I have spent every availible minute coding the past 6 weeks and its driving me batty).
