IMPORTANT:
Please note that I can no longer support this project. Primarily as it is designed for vb3.0.x and I no longer use that version (im obviously on vb3.5x ;) ). There is a version for vb3.5 however its a commercial script. This project is left here for the community.
-----------------------
HowdA All.

The GAS3 system is a comprehensive article system that completely integrates into vB3.

News:

Updated 3/08/05 to version 3.53 for compatability with vb3.08
Updated 13/05/05 to version 3.52!!! Posts for 3.52 to integrate with GAL4.0 start here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=627336#post627336)
History

Originally, I looked into other article systems to integrate with my forums but just got irritated over and over again as I found the other offering out there very limiting for my needs. I wanted to use my members usergroup permissions, the search facility (so when someone did a search for 'bob' both articles AND threads appeared on one page), I also wanted wysiwyg editing and vBs attachment system. Well, I accomplished 99% of my needs with the Geek Article System 2.0
Why 3.0? While the 2.0 was fine for my needs, many users began asking for a far more complex system that took the beauty of 2.0 and added popular features in the other article systems.

Here are the features in a nutshell:

Integrates 100% into vB. No importing forums or creating special groups. Simply mark forum as an 'Article' forum and instantly all threads become articles. Dont like it anymore? Simply remove the ID and the therads and forums go back to normal.
Whatever you can do in a thread or post, you can do with the GAS3 system (uploading attachments, smiles, BBcode, various editors, yadayadayada)
Adding on the above point: all the differing vB editors (wysiwyg, etc..), usergroup permissions (heck - anything you can set for a forum you can set in this - AND MORE!) why> because it is totally integrated!
Create multiple pages in your post by simply putting anywhere in your post.
[b]The first thumbnail in an article substitutes the posters avatar (switchable via admincp)
Upload header images and have them auto resize
Choose header images from a global (or forum specific) gallery
Integrated article byline.
Synopsis - allows users to give a summary that appears on the new forumdisplay
New forumdisplay shows article header image and synopsis (if no synopsis then the first X amount of characters from the article is used)
Synopisis allows BBCode
Integrates with the Geek AutoLink system (optional)
Allows you to post as other users
Article sidebar that shows the article rating, your rating, the rating form, article tools, and article attachments (all toggable via admincp)
An auto installer/upgrader/uninstaller that makes all file edits for you!
A whole host of other tiddlybits that I wont bore you with
Special thanks goes to rlamego, peterska2, Snow, Gldtn, and Magic Spark for private Beta testing this for me. Couldnt of happened without them!

Change log
13.05.05 - updated to 3.52
All this does is update GAS for the GAL4.0 integration.
To update, simply replace your existing functions_geekarticles.php with the one in the latest package.

18.3.05 - updated to 3.51
This really just fixes a couple of mega minor bugs.
Added new default icon per forum functionality (see readme)
Wrote a real README.
Wrote a seperate 3.5x upgrade script. Users of 3.5x should run admincp/gas3_upgrade.php

16.3.05 - updated to 3.50
Loads of new features and a new installer that makes the file changes for you.
New forumdisplay
Uploading of images for your header
Synopsis box
yadayadayda

10.2.05 - updated to 3.02
Fixed typo in readme (step 2.6 referenced $articlebyline instead of $GAS_byline). This bug fixes the disappearing byline when editing an article.
To upgrade - edit your editpost template and search for $articlebyline then replace it with $GAS_byline

Importers
I have made an importer for v3articles. Technically speaking, you dont have to strictly have GAS3 installed to use the importer (though it is ideal). What it does is essentailly import v3articles, comments, ratings, and attachments into existing forums as new threads, replies, threadratings, and post attachments. The idea is that you install GAS3, create the forums to house your articles, and then import your existing v3articles into them (but as I said, you can simply import v3articles into normal forums without having GAS3 installed).
There is also a rollback feature in case you change your mind or experience a problem with the import. Your v3articles installation isnt touched. In fact, no v3articles are harmed in the process ;)

Known issues:

none that I am aware of.
Demos: (note that I have a custom skin, so your results will be ever so slightly different)

Difficulty - EASY

File modifications? a few but now all done automatically for you

Change log:

Updated to 3.01 Feb 7th
Fixed a couple template errors and minor readme instructions

Instructions

Click install. I have busted my butt over the past few weeks to do this and all I ask is that you click install if you use it ;)

Download the package and unzip.
Follow the README!
Ther installer does all the work for you
When done, go into your admncp, and adjust your settings
Troubleshooting:

No phrases after install? This happens a lot with many installers for some bizzare reason. All you have to do is do a phrase search for GAS_ , edit the phrase (dont change it), then save it. Bingo - all your phrases appear.
Also:

I would therefore backup your DB, your styles, and any of the files the README asks you to change.

i can tell it will work on 3.0.2 and newer, as the codes designated in the hack are present the same way on all these versions...

(so it's a 3.0.2 => 3.0.6+ hack!)

this is good to have moved the GAS_forums to the settings... my only other way would have been to make a new setting in Forum table,... but anyway...

now we need some modules for this...

Hey guys,

Sorry for updating so soon. I fixed a couple of minor problems:

readme not specifying first instance of step 5.19
Fixed comments x of y showing on comments only page
I also fixed a minor html screwup in GAS_article_pb

To update, re-run step 5.22 and reinstall templates

That should be that!

Thanks for the quick update, the nail geek.

* edit: Don't you think that it's over the top to have the article tittle twice?
Once in the header of the article and then again in top of the body.

* edit2: I would also like to mention that using css float for the boxes with thumbnails and such would make for a more streamlined appereance.

For example: (collected from another of my sites)

CSS:
div.box
{
float: right;
width: 175px;
background-color: #F5F4F4;
padding: 15px;
margin: 20px 0px 20px 15px;
font-size: 10px;
}

HTML:
<div class="box">
<span class="boxhead">Related articles</span>
<br /><br />
* Case 1<br />
* Case 2<br />
* Case 3<br />
</div>

Yea... I think you are right about the title thing. Ill most likely remove it for the next package update.

What about removing the article tools menu if it is turned on in the sidebar?

nso

the nail geek: I was thinking more in general. The whole article tools menu inside a floating element, thus the text would wrap itself round the article tool menu and it would not take up so much of the space. I myself have disabled the whole menu because it takes up too much room in my fixed-size forum.

Great hack, thou :)

Oh, I think I know what you mean. One main reason for the sidebar there was the beta testers felt that making the article 'skinnier' so it read easier (more like a real article).
I was suggesting that if the article tools in sidebar option was turned on, then the article tools drop down menu became redundant, so why not have ALL of the article tools options in there?

What I think you're saying is make the entire sidebar float so that text wraps around it. That may prove useful to some users so I will look at adding that as an option.

Thanks for your support!

Hey there.

Not too sure about cinqs as I havent used his.
GAS3 is built around vB so anything you can do in vB you can do in GAS3 (i.e. user permissions, attachments, polls, ratings, wysiwyg editor, subscriptions, etc...).

Why not try them both out and decide which is right for you?

Good luck!

No problem. That's really awesome that you're offering an importer, I know that's a major issue with a few people.

I'll have to install this hack on a test forum and try it out.
The way I would hope to run it is to run.. multiple instances of it, but change the name "articles" to "reviews" or something similar.. So I could have both an "articles" section, and "reviews" section. Does that make sense?

Is that possible with GAS3? I was able to pull it off with the v3articles hack, but this seems nicer/more promising for the long run with upgrades and what not.

You could have your forums named whatever you want.

ie. A forum called articles and one called reviews.

Remember that this 'transforms' your forums into displaying them like articles.

The only trip up that I can think of is that the phrases will be the same for both forums (i.e. article attachments). But I would think that would be the same no matter what article system you used. You could at a pinch do some minor alterations to make it use a different phrasegroup, but my guess it would be more work than worth.

Hope this helps ;)

Think "Conditionals" in your templates.

I.E. - IF forum id = a, then template is bla.bla.bla
else
template is GAS default.

change the names in the instance of "A" to fit your naming requirements.

"Conditionals are your salvation" :devious:

Good approach.

Another approach is this. Let's say you want to have Articles & Reviews.
1. Name your parent non-forum "Articles & Reviews"
2. Name a child forum "Articles"
3. And another "Reviews"
4. Then look at your Geek phrases one by one in the phrase manager. I found a lot of phrases that I could amend to fit by a little alteration.
Some examples:
"Edit Article" changed to "Edit Entry" (or "submission" or "Article or Review")
"Article Tools" changed simply to "Tools" (or else "Article & Review Tools")
5. Sometimes you can think of another word that might better fit your needs than "articles" ... one that emcompasses more than articles.
Some examples:
commentary,opinions,editorials,writings,essays,
write-ups,features,columns,comps ...
and amend your parent forum & Geek phrases to one of these

In my particular instance, my articles vary from Reviews to Recipes to Obits!
So, I named my parent forum: "Articles & Features".
I created child-forums to fit my needs and revised my phrases to be a bit more ambiguous than this great hack installed for me.

Combined with conditionals, I know you can find a way to make this hack serve many purposes. ;)

The Geek

Sweet Spence. I use this for tutorials and articles. Think ill take your suggestion and 'genericize' the phrases a touch on my install.

Customizing phrases may be one way, But I was speaking of doing it in the templates proper.

If forumid is Articles -

Then html =

<if condition="$show['viewarticles']==1">
<td class="vbmenu_control">
<a href="showthread.php?$session[sessionurl]t=$threadid&amp;conly=0">$vbphrase[geek_articles_view_article]</a>
</td>
<else />
<if condition="$GAS_comment_count>0">
<td class="vbmenu_control">
<a href="showthread.php?$session[sessionurl]t=$threadid&amp;conly=1">$vbphrase[geek_articles_view_comments]</a>
</td>
</if>
</if>

If Forumid = reviews

Then html =

<if condition="$show['viewarticles']==1">
<td class="vbmenu_control">
<a href="showthread.php?$session[sessionurl]t=$threadid&amp;conly=0">View Review</a>
</td>
<else />
<if condition="$GAS_comment_count>0">
<td class="vbmenu_control">

A small add-on or whatever ... for anyone who wants it.

I created a smilie category named "Article Graphics" more for posting articles than use in comments. (The attached zip contains the images I uploaded into my images/smilies/article_graphics folder).

The smilie pack contains small graphics like bullets, superscript numbers, copyright symbol, circled numbers ... little doodahs that might help jazz up an article submission. And they're handy to use because they're at your fingertip when you post an article. 'Hope you find them useful!

mephisto - try this:

open your GAS_showthread template and enter this in it:
<!-- Test for GAS. GAS_is_article=$GAS_is_article, Gas_forums=$GAS_forums END test for GAS-->

do the same for your regular showthread template

I wanted to do something similar to this, but the way I saw it happening was with template conditionals.. which this hack obviously makes things much easier.

I did change every aspect of "article" to "content" though. This way I can run multiple sections off this one hack. So it says "Thanks for submitting this content" rather than "this article".. Just an easy way around things, I suppose.

Just released an importer for those that wanted to import their articles from the v3articles system. The importer is so much damn fun to run that its a shame for those of you that dont have to import ;)

Anyway... thought I would make it official as it has been tested on a few various imports without any problems.

Here is the scoop for those that dont re-read the first post ;)

It sounds like the changes to your editpost template might be incorrect? If so, then it WOULD dump the byline there, but no inputbox would be there to display it. That meant that when it was saved, it would save the result of the nonexistent byline box (thereby deleting it). DOuble check the template change (make sure you do it to your various styles as that could cause the problem.

I've checked both editpost.php and the template and they seem fine.

<if condition="$GAS_is_article">
<!-- byline field -->
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" class="fieldset">
<tr>
<td class="smallfont" >$vbphrase[GAS_byline]:</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td><input type="text" class="bginput" name="articlebyline" value="$articlebyline" size="40" maxlength="85" tabindex="1" /></td></tr>
</table>
<!-- / byline field -->
</if>

That is what I have in the template for the byline field.

Where in particular in editpost.php should I be checking?

Razz

Here is what I found for the byline in editpost.php:

if ($getpost['postid'] == $postid AND $GAS_is_article)
{
$edit['articlebyline'] = htmlspecialchars_uni(fetch_censored_text($_POST['articlebyline']));
insert_new_article($threadinfo['threadid'],$edit['articlebyline']);
}

My forums were not displaying and I got an error:

[Thu Feb 10 08:39:56 2005] [error] PHP Warning: Call-time pass-by-reference has been deprecated - argument passed by value; If you would like to pass it by reference, modify the declaration of prep_for_breaks(). If you would like to enable call-time pass-by-reference, you can set allow_call_time_pass_reference to true in your INI file. However, future versions may not support this any longer. in /private/var/www/portal/forums/includes/functions_geekarticles.php on line 25

Which I fixed by changing line 25 of this file from:

$text=str_replace($GAS_page_break_code,"",prep_for_breaks(&$text));

to

$text=str_replace($GAS_page_break_code,"",prep_for_breaks($text));

I'm running php 4.3.2, should be close to the latest.

At least my forums now display again :)

Thanks for the very useful hack!

its no problem ;) sorry you are having a snag. Shouldnt be hard to figure out what happened.

Do this for me. edit your editpost template and stick this in it:
<!-- Test for GAS. GAS_is_article=$GAS_is_article, Gas_forums=$GAS_forums END test for GAS-->

Then edit an article, view the source, and do a search for GAS... then post me the results.

Hey nail geek?

I installed this hack:

For the forum id's that I have the GAS working on..

I wanted to install this for it as well:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=597026&postcount=79

But judging from the looks of that modification, it probably wouldn't work out very well.
Would I be better off just editing the "GAS_forumdisplay" template to match the layout of that?

I was doing the same thing for GAS3, but doing it that way adds 1 query for every thread. 30 threads per forumdisplay=30 more queries. Plus, you cant really limit to only images (if its any other file, it looks funny).

I am working on a new forumdisplay for GAS3 that will do the same thing without the extra queries.

If your server is cool with the extra queries and users only post images, then go for it. Or, just wait a few and see how I get on with the next version. The attachment is a very early preview (column headers and alternating row color isnt done). The first image is a default for no article.

And before anyone asks - done when its done ;)

Looks like a style issue to me.
Its difficult to say without seeing how that style was laid out. Looks like (using my phycic powers) that that style sticks the thread starter name in a seperate <td>. Thats why you have more columns in the threadbit than you have column headers in the forumdisplay template (GAS uses your existing threadbit).

Either edit your GAS_threadbit to accept the extra column, or edit your styles threadbit to remove the extra column.

Compare your GAS_forumdisplay with your current style display and note the differences (you will most likely have one more column header before $threadbits in your current style.

If your articles are falling off the date scope (30 days by default)... edit the forum in question. There you will find an option for setting the default age period per forum.

Thanks Razz for helping me find that mysterious little bug.

Package updates to 3.02 to fix typo in step 2.6 of the README

This typo was causing bylines to be overwritten if you edit an article and then save it.
To upgrade: simply edit your editpost template, search for $articlebyline and replace it with $GAS_byline

they are thumbnails if they are enabled.

If you can post an attachment in a regular post and it shows a thumbnail, it will do the same thing here. Try rebuilding your thumbnails if you imported from v3articles.

I have a slight problem. The nick of my test commenter shows as black and not clickable.
### EDIT####
This has affected my other postbit as well, so it?s kinda critical. It?s a nice hack and I would not want to uninstall...

My third problem is not so much of a problem, but an addition: In my standard postbit I have the AWS (Advanced Warning System) active. I tried adding the same code into the comment postbit template nothing shows up.
The code is:

Hi Mika,

My guess is that the 'test5' user was a guest (thats why there is no rep button either) hence the reason you cant click on it. You have altered the GAS_article_pb to make your name large and orange, whereas the test5 username is the color for the 'normal' div class?!?
Change that to whatever colour you want.

The preview comments do not use GAS_comment_pb... they use the GAS_article_pb with a conditional to make them look like a comment.

I dont know anything about the AWS hack, but I assume you could place that code in teh GAS_article_PB (and put it in the GAS_comment_pb)

Hi Nail,

Sorry but I think it?s not the case. I have not altered the GAS_article_pb in any way but installed it to your instructions. The username color was working ok in postbit before installing this hack. Also note the change took place also in the standard postbit which I haven?t definately touched today.

The test5 is not a member of the stanard installed membergroups but one by id: 11 set up as a custom usergroup and the colour should be blue (in some cases red like here, if a link is included).

See this search: http://www.soundchilds.net/loud_lounge/search.php?searchid=129 . As you can see test5 appears ok and all posts get registered.

Thats why I think the only option is something got changed in the code affecting the usernicks in the postbits.

Hope there is a solution! This would be a useful one to have around.

Hi Mika.

If you view your GAS_article_pb file, search for this:

<div class="normal">
$vbphrase[geek_articles_by] <if condition="$show['profile']">
<a href="member.php?$session[sessionurl]u=$post[userid]">$post[musername]</a>
<else />

</if>

This is the condtional for the username display. Mika is coming up linked because $show['profile']==1. Test5 is taking the other route for whatever reason.

I dont know why, but your $post[musername] has additional formatting in it that isnt put in by this hack (check out your source). Maybe another hack installed?

Anyway... you want to find WHY $show['profile']==0 when it comes time to do that comment.

Double check your showthread modifications. Maybe you missed something out.

If you are still stuck, PM me a username and password with style admin as well as permissions to post and I will look into it when I get a minute.

Yep. So it seems... Addmittedly the board is heavily hacked with pretty much all bells and whistles for 303. However, when installing this all file and template modifications were found by Dreamweawers find and replace, so no hacked code was touched...

Also the point that the username shows correctly in other parts of the board but the comment postbit and the postbit legacy (without me touching that one at all) indicates that there is something funny in the php rather than the templates. I saw a fair amount of replacing with if-else conditionals going on when modding the php. What parts of the php files hacking would affect the post/comment outputs?

Giving out passwords at this point is a little sesnsitive a case. I hope you understand - really no offence.

Thanks for your time in any case,

Careful with those find and replaces. There are not that many actual replacements. If you had a hack that previously altered showthread areas that GAS3 deals with, it could cause the problem you are mentioning.
My opinion is that something wasnt done right in the showthread modifications or another of your hacks is screwing up the GAS3 changes.
The only area that could really affect the $post variables is step 5.22 open showthread and do a search through that step and see if it matches correctly.

As per the password, I didnt think it was a such a sensitive issue to set me up a standard user account with style permissions. I was only trying to help.

If that doesnt do it for you, you could always just edit your newthread/edit post files to append a prefix to the title field. Personally, I would prefer my eariler suggestion but I guess that depends on what you are trying to accomplish ;)

Hey Geek, I'm just curious..
Is there an easy way to add a.. vbadvanced style menu above the articles.. to have "what's hot / what's new" drop down menu's?

I tried messing with it a little earlier but had no luck.
I only want this so most of the stuff on my site looks the same, therefore is easier for members to get used to/understand how to use it.
Thanks,
To be honest - I am not sure what you are asking for. Can you PM me a link or some screen shots and then Ill take a look for you.

OOOPS,that sent up a red flag.

Ok. I'll se wether I can come up with something substantial according to that one. I am quite new to vB, so I didn't know there is a way to allow stylemod rights if not an admin. I really didn?t mean to offend you and there is nothing mystical about my case. A plain hacked board doesent straight accept the hack - really nothing new on planet earth :) I'll get back to this once I?ve had a chance to look at your pointed 5.22.

Peace,

I installed 01 yesterday on one of my sites with no issues.

One small item -

If I click on the last post link in forumdisplay, I get a JS error.

But once I add a comment, that error goes away.

If the comments appear on the same page as an article, they some appear in the GAS_article_pb

If you want to turn off the previewed comments though, I would suggest setting the preview setting to 0 :)

Right, found the bug.

Find this in showthread:

$show['GAS_comments']=$GAS_last_page & 1;

replace with:

$show['GAS_comments']=iif($GAS_comments_only_lastpage,$GAS_last_page,1) ;

I will post the fix in the next version.

Wow, thats a bummer. I guess I can make it optional... I just liked the idea of the header image being in the forumdisplay. I originally did that with using the attachmentid, however that added an additional query per image, so I have created a thumbnail upload facility. I also did this as I think its a better improvement over showing the first attachment as the header image (saves space and a query too).

Anyway - thanks for the feedback. I will look into an optional system (will end up making the synopsis useless though :( )

What version of vB3 are you running and what other hacks have you installed?

Your column order is also different, but I guess that isnt too much of a problem. I assume currently do not have many attachments on your board.

Try adding column thumbnail_filesize int(10) unsigned

Must be using a wysiwyg editor on aligned text. Double check by switching to a standard editor.
The text is split using the BREAK code. If that code is put between two code brackets like this:

[BREAK]

Then the open bracket will appear on one page and the close on the next page. The only wat to prevent this is by not putting BREAK between two tags.

If anyone knows how to automatically open and close BBcode tags that may get orphaned by the splitting process, Id love to hear about it.

As to the proposed forum display, I think the varying sizes of the images throw off the symmetry of the page. It confuses the eye. And the images overpower the entries ... which would be great if the images were intended to be the focus of the page (like a gallery). But, of course, they're not.

Also, I was left trying to "relate" the images to the words ... I think traditionally, an image displayed alongside any paragraph of text is "assumed" to relate the text ... like an illustration. I think this adds a bit to the confusion. Does the image relate to the title or the author or the synopsis? ... my mind wanted to relate the image to something. And for that connection to be consistent. It may be a little much to expect that sort of consistency ... that is, for my users to always have an appropriate illustration to offer.

Sorry to offer "feedback" (criticism) without a suggestion of how I think it might be altered ... so, I'll "study on it", too.

Hey Spence, thanks for the input.
I agree that the symmetry of the images can throw the eye off a bit. Sadly I dont really have much of a solution there (unless they were floated in some type of fixed border frame or something).
As for the images relating to the text - blame it on the author ;) I threw those up to test though I actually thought they were semi relevant.

The showthread would be nice if it had an option to display different attachments on different pages ([BREAK] tag stuff?)

And maybe images could appear on the forumdisplay, but make it look more part of the actual thread, rather than just having it next to it with no indication that its related to that article

Yours are relevant. I was thinking about my users and whether or not they would post images even remotely "related".

Might it be possible to have an option to leave the forum display the way it is in the current version?

If not, might it be possible to include a list of pre-installed images (we provide) with an option for the author to upload their own?

I was looking into that. I am planning on (after this next release) making it so to upload the file, a pop up opens that allows you to select an image from a gallery OR upload your own. The gallery is a collection of default images merged with forum specific ones. Say I had the following folders:

GAS
|_____headers
|______1
|______3

Essentially, it would grab all images in the headers folder (call these 'global' images). THen if you were in a forum with a matching sub folder (lets say 3) it would allow you to chose from all images in header AND 3.
That way you could have forum specific images OR upload one.

ANyhooo... THat will be the next step I think. I would still really like to sort out the look of the forum display. I kind of like it... but Im not overly excitied abou it.

You can specify the image size they can upload as well as the finished dimensions. The system will then resize the image to the minimum specifications and chuck away the original.
I didnt see the point in retaining the original as if they want it so bad they can always attach it ;)

The new layout looks good for both, look forward to seeing them.

One feature I would like to see is the ability to post articles as another user (admin only of course) as sometimes they submit them in word documents so they can spell check etc.

Other ideas:

Admins / moderators get a PM or email on new article posting to allow them to go check it over or validate it if its in moderation queue.

The posting rules at the base of articles should be article relevant and not the default thread rules.

Proper spacing/padding in the sidebar, it doesn't seem to have any.

Option to remove sig (already covered I believe)

Ability to toggle it between articles/reviews system (would toggle the phrases id guess)

If above is added then some form of scoring for the review to give the product a score (e.g 8/10) possibly with up to 5 custom score fields and an overall score.

Keep up the good work, the others pale in comparison :)

Youre right, we did (but I forgot)... Ill sort that for next release :)

Hmmm. This could be slightly tough though as off the top of my head, you would need a conditional around each phrase. Hmmm. Then again. Who says that we have to use vbphrase? I guess I could pull a variety of phrases from the system, choose a particluar one, then push it into $GAS_phrase. (Just wondering alound). THat may be very doable and very cool.

If above is added then some form of scoring for the review to give the product a score (e.g 8/10) possibly with up to 5 custom score fields and an overall score.

The only option I would love to see is A to Z categories across the top, but you already knew about that one Geek. :)

The way I plan to use this is to have hundreds of reviews, and A to Z would make it so much easier.

EDIT: Oooh, remembered the other one. An integration between this hack, and the auto linker hack. Where if an article is created, it automatically submits the article title/url into the auto linker system.

You know about that one too, Geek. I think? haha

No I actually meant in the sidebar itself, the text touches the very edge of the tables (print, rating etc).

hmmm. let me mull that over. You dont think the standard rating works?

The standard rating is for your members to rate your article, if your doing a review you want to be able to give a score to the product your're reviewing.

Example (software)

Presentation: 9/10
Ease Of Use: 8/10
Value For Money: 9/10
Overall: 9/10

If you wanted to be really fancy these could be percentage bars :)

You getting what I mean now?

While that would be nice, it's more for a reviews area than an "articles". Meaning, I don't know about everyone else, but I would have no use for a rating system in that way.

I would not have a use for this either. I love the ability to rate the article and wouldn't want to confuse what was being rated ... article or "product". I love the simplicity of the showthread and would hope it won't get crowded.

There was something I noticed with page breaks as well. I don't use them yet, but when I had the break set as "[BREAK]" and if I would type just the word "Break" in the article (without the brackets) it would capitolize the word "break"

For example:
I have the page break set to [BREAK].
I typed "breakdown" in a review, and it changed to "BREAKdown".

Just thought I'd let you know. I fixed it by simply changing [BREAK] to [PAGEBREAK].

I think that its best to leave that in the hands of the user. Character breaks would cut article pages into something illegible and line breaks could do the same IMO. :(

Did that for the first design of the system.

To write articles, it was a bit more intuitive IMO, but I dont think it really worked out in the long run. It became logistically very difficult to do.

Just out of curiosity... Why do you dislike the [BREAK] system?

BTW: Thanks for your support on HOTM. Im a bit miffed about what happened though. Hopefully it will get resolved - but Im not turning blue holding my breath!

I believe the new vB "increase/decrease size" links bellow the text area might do the trick for the editor box.

As for editing a single page by itself, I really don't see any advantages that make up for the break of usability, since an article is broke into several pages for readability.
Maybe you have a different user scenario where this makes sense. Can you share it with us? =)

Oh but it's really simple.
Go to my forum FORUMHOME here > http://www.p2pforum.it/forum/
Click on any 'last post' link (icon) http://www.p2pforum.it/forum/images/buttons/lastpost.gif. You'll be redirected to first post of last page for that thread. Normally Vbulletin 3 would redirect you to last post of last page.
If you need more infos please just ask.

Thank you :-)

I have also noticed that to get to the proper article from forumhome takes a few extra steps because of only comments being show when showthread.php is called using ?p=2323 instead of ?t=123 - this is good in some cases, but gets annoying when trying to read new articles :)

Have been looking for a feature in any article system or other hack that would make it possible to set the date and time when you want an article posted.

If I have a lot of articles and want to spread them in time, without having to sit by a computer when I want them posted.

Like today I have an article that I want posted 5 am on Sunday or something.

It is ok for me if this is only for admins.

Thank you for all the work you have put into this already!

Sorry, but I dont think I will be able to look into doing this for this hack.

You could always change the time after posting... but maybe some kind of hack that would run as a cron job and do a new thread at a specific time would be the ticket for you (wouldnt really be that hard to do).

Good luck!

Just a quick note for those of you having problems with the page break code capitalizing similar words in your posts. I am in middle of finishing the next release and came across the problem (is obvious when you look at it!).

Though it will be fixed in the next release, if it bugs you feel free to make the following change:

open your includes/functions_geekarticles.php

Find:

function prep_for_breaks($text){
global $GAS_page_break_code;
$strip_brackets=str_replace(array("[","]"),"",$GAS_page_break_code);
$text=eregi_replace("$strip_brackets", "$strip_brackets", $text);
return $text;
}

replace with:

function prep_for_breaks(&$text){
global $GAS_page_break_code;
$strip_brackets=str_replace(array("[","]"),array("\[","\]"),$GAS_page_break_code);
$text=eregi_replace("$strip_brackets", $GAS_page_break_code, $text);
return $text;
}

On a side note-Ill be looking for a handful of people to help test install the next version. Anyone game PM me.

Well, first off, this looks incredable, though I have to admit, the amount of changes needed has scared me off a bit, but as I look at this, I am getting braver every day. :)

I can see this as idea for a help guide system, with multiple pages, one for each topic. Is there a way for a built in Page Jump type listing, say create a "subtitle" after each break, and have it displayed on the side as a link title, as opposed to just the page numbers at the bottom? That way we could use this for say manuals, FAQ's, and other things where a link with a topic title would be more helpful than a number.

By the way, couldn't we use this idea as a BBcode thing? have a icon set up, that adds the break, and pulls up a text box for a "subtitle"? just a thought, but not very good when it comes to coding etc.

Still, I can see the huge future potential of this script, and the fact it changes the entire appearance of the forum into something a lot better looking is simply awe inspiring. I like the new Forumhome look as well BTW. :)

If you were scared by the amount of changes needed, you should have a look at the installation instructions of vbJournal =)

As for the rest, something along those lines as already been proposed but seems it involved major modifications that didn't follow the KISS rule (although I'm not quite sure that was the reason why). Anyway, you can do that by hand.
Write an article, insert the page breaks, begin each "page" with a "subtitle" and submit it. Then browse your article, copy each page url and create the links with [ URL ] bbtags at the end of each page.

Hey Shiva - Thanks for the compliment.

I agree that the file changes may occasionally put a couple of people off even though they only seem a lot because of the amount of text that is inserted. The reason for all the text was to make uninstalling or upgrading a piece of cake ;)
I have worked very hard for the next version to have less file edits and less text to change. Most of the GAS code is moved into external files with simple function calls to make file changes much lighter.

As for the change you are putting forward - If I understand you right, you are wanting each page of an article to be a named link? Like a TOC? Or are you suggesting a named link to the next page?

This can make a slight change in the 'doability' of the request. Regardlessly - Ricardo is right. It does start to make things slightly more complex than it needs to be. This came up during beta testing gas3 and the conclusion was that if a named link to the next page (or anypage) is required - just create a url to jump to it).

Then again - I may be misunderstanding what you are envisioning for the use of Gas3.

For some unknown reason, upgrading vb frequently wipes out random custom installed templates. This is the case with many other hacks too (my vba installations always go screwy any time I upgrade vb).

Thats why in the install file, you can install templates/phrases only.

I have actually decided to postpone the next release a tad. I am redoing my installers to make all file modifications automatically. That way upgrading vb and the Geek hacks will be a bit o cake :)

Hey Blam.

It is optional. Here is what I am working on it doing:

It makes a copy of each needed file into a change directory. It also copies it into a change/backup directory
It then goes through and applies changes to the files in teh change directory
If it cant make a change because you have modified the text, it will skip the change and alert you to which step you will need to manually do in order to make the file complete.
When it is done, you can manually copy over the changed files. Once verified, you can delete the backups.

I know what you mean about concerns over existing hacks. My boards are heavily modified - but this is the #1 reason why I want something to automatically make the changes for me. It makes upgrading a snap ;)

regardless, you will still have the option - worse case scenario - you may have to make a couple of hand modifications - at least the rest would be done for you ;)

Ricardo - I am working on the coffee making facilities for the install file after I finish the Vodka tonic mixer mod for the installer ;)

tormodg
02-20-2005, 08:19 PM
Yes it's completely different.

I just found out there's a teeny weeny problem with it, though.

When someone replies to an article (ie, makes a comment), the article is listed in the "Latest topics" list in the vBa CMPS. This is fine...however, when you click on the link (which goes to the last thread) then the only thing shown is the comments.

Check it out -

link to article:
http://www.hypography.com/scienceforums/showthread.php?t=1698&conly=0

link to last post (copied from the "Latest threads" thingy in my right column):
http://www.hypography.com/scienceforums/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=1698

I have enabled the "comments on last page" thing but the comments show fine when I view the article itself.

This behaviour is a bit strange and also makes it difficult for readers to understand what's going on if the first thing they see is the comment...! :)

The Geek
02-20-2005, 08:23 PM
Thats by design. The article goes into Comments mode and only shows the comments. When you view the article with x amount of preview comments shown... thats all they are - previews. There is a link at the top of the comments only page to show them the actual article.

To prevent it from popping up in Latest topics, exclude the forum id in your cmps settings. You can instead use the Latest Articles (I prefer using random article mod though) and chose for the mod to display the latest articles, not the latest comments.

Hope that makes sense!

Hey Guys.

Just thought I would drop in an update and a request ;)

I have postponed the next release for a couple of weeks as I am going to be traveling on business so I wont be around to support the beta testers. The good news is that by the end of this week I will have the next version for them (but they will still have to wait for my return to get it!).

Here is what I have done:

Far more options - I have given GAS its own admincp page for easier management
Post as user - defined by usergroups
Geek Autolinker key phrase adder - it allows you to put in keywords seperated by a comma to insert new links into the GAL system (if you have it installed). This is also controlled by usergroups
New forumdisplay layout (http://www.thenailgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17) - option to turn it to regular forumdisplay (I just updated the layout today. I think its looking sweet now!).
Synopsis - displayed in the new forum display (and soon to be released add ons)
Turn off signature completely or have it on the last page.
Show comment button on all pages - optional
Automatic file modifications (optional) - I have devised a system whereby GAS tries to make all the file modifications all by its lonesome. If it can - it will. If it cant - it just notifies you which ones you will need to do by hand. Hopefully this will dramatically increase the ease of vB upgrades and installations.
Image header gallery - This is a big one. Users can upload images to act as their article header or choose from a pre-defined gallery. The gallery shows a 'catch all' gallery and then merges forum specific images into it. That way you can have some default images, then some that are specific to each forum. Barring that - you can always let the user upload their own. This is all controlled via the admicp. You will still be able to have the first attachment thumbnail as the header image, but this way the new forumdisplay will be far more efficient.
What I am asking for now is that if anyone of you guys are ass kicking artists and fancy doing some default article header images to include with the install, I would dig it big time - just PM me.

What I havent done but plan to do after this next release:

Sort out captions for attachments
Allow users to specify which attachment goes to which page
Settings per forum. This is a big one. Essentially you will be able to wither inherit settings or specify your own on a per forum basis. You will also be able to use differnent phrasegroups on a per forum basis. That way you can have articles AND something like reviews on your site all with the same system.
After that. Im going to France to make waffles to go with the scrambled eggs my brain has become.

If there is anythign I seem to have missed - let me know. I can still add minor functionality at this stage.

Could you make it so you can see the comments on all pages of the article, and not just the last one? If not, can you provide the code to work this in ourselves?

If there is anythign I seem tohave missed - let me know. I can still add minor functionality at thisstage.I don't know if this has already been mentioned but a[BREAK] button or even better an auto-break feature (where a page breakis automatically inserted after x characters/lines) would benice. I'm finding most of my authors are not using the [BREAK]code in the current version which results in super-long 1 page articles.

The Geek
02-22-2005, 05:54 AM
Ricardo - hehe. Guess I better see what I can do without getting it to you sooner then ;)
Henry - Thats done :)

Snow - hmmmm. This is difficult. If you automatically put them in after x amount of characters, you will inevitably get some articles messed up with breaks in illogical places. Maybe I can come up with some creative way of getting the character count between breaks and if it is over a range... tell the user to pagebreak somewhere. Let me mull that one over :rolleyes:

Hello

Great hack.

Man it's great but i want to ask you is there a way that i can fix it to my own needs
i need to allow the user when he want to add a new thread or Article he should enter four things so the article will be posted

Three written filled and one filled for adding the image so in the end it will be very organized:

The output should look like this

1-name of the document or the article
=======================
2- The picture of the document centered.
=======================
3-what is written in that historical document will be here so every body can read it clearly.
=======================
4- What is the reason this document have been release
=======================
5- The date this document have been release.

This should organize automatically and if there is one filled missing it will not allow him to post it.

I know it's a new hack idea put if it could be done in this already done hack it will be great.

Thank you very much.

Hi The_Geek,

This version looks simply fantastic. I will uninstall v1 today and install this v3 also.

I see with the version that you're using on your site that all articles in your forumdispley (http://www.thenailgeek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17) have a short summary. This is very, very nice. Can (or will) this summary also be used for the 'featured article' and 'random article' modules for vbadvanced?

rlamego
02-23-2005, 07:24 AM
TCB, I like the idea but would like to see this as optional as it can be, I mean, something that doesn't involve adding a new text field and forcing someone to fill it in every article written. This way, it won't affect all the people that use GAS to post reviews, instructions, FAQs, etc.

A BB tag would be great if Samuel could extract it from the middle of the text.
Imagine you select a paragraph, enclose it in [ summary ] [ /summary ] tags and that's it.
When reading through the article, summary tags would simply be ignored.

The Geek
02-23-2005, 08:44 AM
Hey guys.
First off I want to say that the new version is coming along sweetly. I have redone the installer so that it makes copies of the required files that need edits - moves the copies into another folder, and makes all the file edits itself. If it cant find what it is looking for because your file has already been hacked, then it simply lets you know which step you have to manually do. It is freaking sweet. I tested the install script on a new vb test installation (unmodified files) and the entire thing (settings, phrases, templates, file changes, data stuff) took under 30 seconds :)

I am hoping to give Ricardo it by end of week (when I go away). If there are any problems with it - he will find them :) Then when I get back ill make the changes and issue to the Beta testers that contacted me.

Now onto your points!

The new summary you are seeing in the new forum display is the synopsis box. Put whatever the heck you want in there (or leave it blank). It doesnt matter. If you use the forumdisplay legacy option (where by the forumdisplay looks more like a normal forumdisplay) then it wont particularly matter if you use the synopsis box as that is the only place it appears right now (I am working on a new featured/random/latest articles add on that would use it though).

Hope that helps (see attachments of new forumdisplay, article extras and image chooser/uploader)

Geek - are those shots of an *upcoming* release? Stuff does not look that sweet in my GAS3, for sure.

thank you very much for your fast reply.

i also need to know if i want to translat the language from english to may language is it easy say like a sepreat file for language and it could be used in the fully auto installation script you did.

if there is an easy way i'll do the translation. it would be great.

The Geek

Depends what your language is ;)

I think they have done (or are doing) a French Translation over at vBulletin-fr.org

Many of the phrases were translated to French for 2.0 (which are still pretty valid). However if you want a complete (and easy) way to translate than just edit the install file. There you will see all the english phrases in an array. Leave all the variable and such the same... just change the text and then install and its done!

If you do translate - let me have your install script back and I will roll up the translation into the next install file.

That's a critical feature for me ...

I've got about five sites that I would migrate to vBulletin immediately if that one feature were available to me ...
Are you guys saying that you want a 'cron' job of sorts? Or are you saying that you want to backdate a thread/article?

To go v1 or 2 to v3 (the current release) then yes, run the install script and uninstall.

For this upcoming release (3.5) I am going to try to do an upgrader along the installer lines though in all honesty it may just be easier and faster to grab fresh files to hack as it is done automatically.

I want to get the version finalised first and then the last thing I will do is the upgrader. Ill have more info then :)

today or tomorrow? :D

The Geek

Ha. I would love to however its not all the way done. It still needs a few finishing touches, A couple minor settings need adding, the upgrader needs looking at and the uninstaller needs doing (I never release a hack without one!).

Not to mention I wont let it out until its been beta tested. That way we can keep the number of issues down to what you guys have expected (nil).

To top that off with - I am out of town from Friday for 10 days. I assume beta testing will begin then and a final release by mid March.

Promise it will be worth it :)

Change my last comment. The error was a template edit I did in the forums.
:banana:

Good coding and html NG. Not too many hacks on these forums come up 100% validated without a bunch of corrections.

I am getting the following errors when I click on a forums that I designated in the options to be an article forum:

Warning: array_merge() [function.array-merge]: Argument #2 is not an array in /includes/functions_geekarticles.php on line 120

Appears at the top of the page, and I also get a vbulletin warning box that says:

Unable to add cookies, header already sent.

It can be only one of two things:

I munged something up. I followed the instructions meticulously, and went back and looked over every file edit line by line (tedious) but found nothing. Is there something in the error messages that would point me in the right direction to where I screwed up, at least?

OR

I don't use cookies per se on this board - I have disabled the "remember me" checkbox, so logins are sessions based. I do this because it is an admin-related site for my company and I am tired of employees forgetting to log out on public computers. I'm not sure if this is the problem - I have both vBadvanced CPMS and vBugs installed on this forum (they are the only hacks on an otherwise fresh 3.0.7 install) but I bring it up anyway.

Any one have any ideas?

Thank you!

Update:

I just tried it with "Remember me" checked so that cookies are used, and got the exact same errors, so that isn't it. I must have messed something up, but for the life of me I cannot find it - I went back over the install step by step.

sounds like the forum ids in your settings are not set right. Make sure they are numerical only and seperated by comma's like: 34,23,99

THe cookie error is because an error got spit out beofre any of the headers.
Let me know if that sorts it :)

It gives this error even with just one forum id set. I checked, reset it, made sure there were no spaces, tried it with two separated with commas - no go.

Same error no matter which forum I choose or how many. Any forum that I designate as an "article" forum gives this error.

I just installed this but I am a little paranoid about it breaking my forum :P

How many queries does it use? Does it affect normal thread load anyway, like in time, etc?

Also, is there a way to hide the quick reply box if you're on a page where you can't leave comments? :D

I would love to have a separate file for the articles, like articles.php, but this works nice too. Also, is there an option to set more characters for article submission? My first article was over 20k characters while posts are only allowed up to 10k (altho I put it to 0 to disable meanwhile).

So far it has worked great.

Idea! Pros and Cons box? Possibly in the header of the article template? :D

Mijae, the whole concept behind GAS is to use existing forum tools and functions instead of creating a new thing on top of vB.
The original script was nothing more than a set of templates more suitable for article displaying than vB's showthread templates.
Since that version a lot has happened and some I didn't follow but the main concept remains.
So, having said that:
1 - Why?
2 - With the inclusion of some new fields (like the byline thing), it adds at least one more query. You can wait for Samuel's answer or install a mod to count queries. Either way I believe the number of additional queries it's not significant.
3 - If the user has no permission to leave comments, the quick reply shouldn't be displayed. You can edit the templates and put an if conditional around the quick reply box if there isn't an option for that in the GAS settings.
4 - In theory you can duplicate showthread.php, name it articles.php, make the necessary edits on that file and change GAS code to call articles.php when a GA is displayed. In practice I don't know what are the side effects of this.
5 - Again, this should use your forum's settings although I'm also not sure if there is a value for that in GAS settings.

I like the idea but would prefer a BBcode thing like [ quote ] works than a new text field.

Hi The Geek, I just found that the GAS templates are not cached (like in showthread and forumdusply). This is due to including functions_geekarticles.php after global.php was included. I just added them to $globaltemplates directly and commented out the array_merge code. Just thought I'd let you know for the next release :)

A suggestion, how about including some instructions for the vb3articles convertor as well when you release. including a brief overview of what you need to do before you start messing around with it.

$template = 'postbit';

and the hack postbit style it ask to change the code

Find: ( 2 )

$template = 'postbit';

Replace With:

$template = iif ( $bbuserinfo['postbitstyle'] == 0,'postbit','postbit_legacy' ) ;
