One bug I found is that if I use [BREAK] to separate pages, as its set by default, the word break will be in upper case if used.
What I mean is that if you use [BREAK], and you write breakout, it will show up as BREAKout :P
Just a little bug ;)

Hey Guys.
Sorry to not get back sooner but I am traveling on business. Ill try to hit each of your Q's here:
Mijae: There is a fix for the break issue a couple of pages back (on page 12). This is fixed in the next release.
Greg: Ill look into that - but I didnt think there was a problem. THanks for bringing it to my attention.
Ted: This is in the next release currently in Beta TEsting
Tamarian: THanks for that. I noticed that too so I made them inline in the next version.
Shiva: I thought the converter had sufficient instructions (it walks you through the importing) however Ill look into adding more.
Richie: Just make new threads (articles) in the article forums just as you would do in standard forums and they appear as articles. Or even better - just take an existing forum and specify it as an article forum. Presto! They all appear as articles :)
H2K: That line still exists so it shouldnt be a problem. Just apply that mod to the current template assignment to get the results you are after (hope this makes sense ;) )
Afiniti: Doesnt look like phrases were installed. Just search for a GAS phrase - edit it - then save it to build them again.
Can I ask that you guys that have installed it please click the Install button. It only takes a second ;)

I see nothing related the BREAK on page 12?
Also, what about the character limit for articles? Is there any chance to make it different from normal posts? :D

Looks like you havent installed GAS3 yet. One of the changes GAS3 makes is adding a description column to your attachment table.
You can manually add it though ;)

Ah, okay, thought you said it would work without GAS3, but you didn't say how. I'm actually waiting for the new version, as it's a bit pointless to close the site down to install etc and then have to do it again. Besides, like a nice clean install. :)
That's what I meant by instructions to the converter, detailing how to setup the converter without GAS3, like that table info. ;)

Looking very good.
I did a quick scan of the thread, so sorry if I missed it.
I have just *finally* upgraded my forum from vb2 to 3, so still getting my head around the changes.
One thing I really want to do, is be able to override the no html setting for the article itself.
I.E. allow html in the article, and block it in the user comments. It would allow me to import my static html article pages, and not comprimise security for my users as all articles will be moderated.
Just my idea anyway...

you could do it easily with a slight edit to newthread and editpost. Just do a check to see if its an article, and if its the first post. If so, allow HTML. However you would have to look into this yourself as I am in middle of the next version so I am slightly out of sync with version 3 code. I could maybe put something in the next version though.
You could also turn on html to import and then turn it off again I suppose (but I doubt that would fix long term).
HTH's
Actually it seems more to be in the construct_postbit function I would need to create an override...
that and tweak step 5.22 a little.
If I succed I will let you know.
I'm still playing with article systems on the test site, and still to make a choice.
Hello,
looks great.
I installed it but had too many problems... so I had to uninstall it and test it more before.
I'm running vb3.0.1 with all security patches
Everything seemed to work fine, except on long threads which don't show (show the database problem error message instead)
The posts order on long threads is wrong too (showing the last post instead of the first)
Well I may try it locally before, and check if I didn't made a mistake.
Did anyone get this problem ?

This is strange. I had accidentally set the wrong display order for my test user (newest posts first). MAybe you should check that this is set up correctly (oldest posts first).
I am running GAS3 without a glitch on vB 3.0.7.

However, I am a little confused as to how to actually create an article. I previously had the V3Articles system installed and there was an articles.php file that it all went to. (If this sounds like a newb saying all this you are right, cause I am so just bear with me) But anyway, where is this all saving at? Im not even sure where to send a redirect to ya know? Or in that matter, how to even create an article?

A blank page is an indication that the templates may not have been installed.
As far as where to post articles - just create a forum (or forums) to hold the articles and create a new article there (as you would do a thread).
Hope that makes sense ;)

I Tried to do the same on the forum I'm working on here (http://www.fruitbody.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=43)
I would like to make a small suggestion that I ran into while testing.. While posting an article, it would be nice if the BYLINE: feature would have the ability to use bb code functions. :lick:

I am just installing this hack, and I haven't used it yet, but I just wanted to comment on how awesome it is you took the time to make such convenient code. Commenting out the original version and keeping it included is perhaps the best thing since sliced bread. Makes things a lot easier for me. This code is very well done, and the install instructions are great.
Also I like the bit of humor you threw into the install.php
Thanks :)

Hey Guys - What cool comments. I appreciate such positive feedback.
Chrissy - the only real way of doing it is to fub the img tag to force a particular size. Personally, I wouldnt bother as its a bit of a lame way of doing it. If you can chill for a few - the next verison allows the user to upload their own header image that you can specify the size to (you can also use the first thumbnail as you do now).
The new release isnt set yet. Its in Beta testing and there are a few more issues to work out (I have just been really busy with work lately). Fingers crossed it shouldnt be too much longer.
Do me a favour and click the install button for those that havent yet ;)

Great mod, I love it. However I wonder if it's possible to select to display the sidebar and related options on an individual forum basis? And if not, would it be possible to request this as a feature? The reason I ask is that I wish to use two forums for articles - where one is a news forum (the articles are displayed on my homepage) and the other an actual articles forum.
It'd be a shame if I can't do this, the article/comments format is perfect for both tasks. If you want to have a look, my website is at http://mousepotato.org (I haven't yet created the articles forum)
Thanks :)

Blank templates usually means that the templates were not installed. Just repeat the installation and install the templates only.
Sidebar options per forum is planned for the release following the next one ;) The reason being is that version 4 - each setting will be on a per forum basis - this isnt in the up and coming version though. To work around it, why not just put a conditional in your article_pb template. something like <if condition="$forumid!=[newsid]">...</if> around the sidebar bit?

I have a limit of 4 attachments. (Dumb that the amin is restricted to this rule) So I upload 4.
I realize I need more so I change the amount to 0. I go back to my article and it wont take any more than four.
I changed it to 100 same thing.
Only way around it is to delte the article and start again. Wont work from a edit.

Is the problem happening in Showthread, forumdisplay AND printthread?
If its only one, then double check your file edits. If it is ALL of them and your templates are installed in ALL your styles... then ill shoot myself :)
In fact... I am almost certain from looking at your site that its a file edit as all your showthreads seem to be eval'ed with no results. Check step 5.28 to make sure its correct (search showthread for 5.28)

I havent made this part of the package as you are only the second person to have the problem. On a side note though, following these steps will speed up everyones article by a couple of nanoseconds.
Edit showthread and find this:
'bbcodecache',
after, add
'GAS_showthread','GAS_comment_pb','GAS_article_pb' ,
save and close
edit forumdisplay and find:
'FORUMDISPLAY',
after, add:
'GAS_forumdisplay',
save and close
edit printthread.php and find:
'bbcode_php',
After, add:
'GAS_printthreadbit',
save and close
then replace your functions_geekarticles with the one attached.

Thanks snow!
Now - GAS3.5 is in RC and about to go Gold. However I need some input from current users of GAS3 to help determine how long it will take to go gold.
There are several file changes in GAS3 and I found it to be a pain whenever I needed to upgrade vB. Therefore I spent about a weeks worth of coding on a new installer that will do all of the file edits automatically (you can of course choose the manual file editing if you wish).
Because of this, as well as the plethora of new features, I have had to add a few more edits, and I have moved most GAS code out of the vb files (as much as possible anyway). That means that virtually all file modifications in GAS3 are different in GAS3.50. These changes make GAS3.5 better, faster, and much easier to upgrade when a new version of vB gets released (just re-run the auto installer). This brings me on to my point:
I could possibly create an un-installer for the file editing in GAS3.0 however it would most likely only catch SOME of the changes (due to the nature of copy and paste file changing). How many of you would be bummed to simply replace your files with fresh ones to run the installer?
In other words: Try to create the uninstaller or Ill use fresh files.
At least with the new installer, you wont have to worry about this anymore!
T3MEDIA

I dont have back ups. I have but fresh fresh they are un hacked totally.
welp I guess a un install is the only way to go then? manually? I know for a fact I had to change things when I added your pop up with this so it wont be perfect.
I had a problem with installing this so needed hack :
the problem occures only on long threads in polls, with error hanging script.
I have vb 3.0.1 with all security patches.
I noticed that my vb hangs in SHOWTHREAD.PHP where GEEK script needs (STEP 5.17 of installation procedure) :
SELECT filename, filesize, visible, attachmentid, counter, postid, IF(thumbnail_filesize > 0, 1, 0) AS hasthumbnail, thumbnail_filesize
I test on my pc, and this works fine :
SELECT filename, filesize, visible, attachmentid, counter, postid, IF(thumbnail = '', 0, 1) AS hasthumbnail, LENGTH(thumbnail) AS thumbnailsize, description
Am I right ? Is this correct ? why do I have a 3.0.1 vb that doesn't understand "thumbnail_filesize > 0, 1, 0" ?
Regards
The Geek
03-16-2005, 08:16 AM
T3Media - The only thing you would of had to change are the settings. But regardless I have written a file upgrader so you wont even have to do that (or you can also just leave as is if its too much trouble)
Fabz - thumbnail_filessize changed in a later version. You may be patched with security fixes - but not with the latest DB scheme or internal functions. I would strongly suggest upgrading to the latest vB when you can find the time as there may be other issues with 3.0.1
Good luck!

Thats a trip. Looking at the code and file changes - there shouldnt be anything that would adjust that (your $lastread variable got wiped somewhere).

It makes all the file changes for you.
Just a question about this. For example in editpost.php instead of
$phrasegroups = array('threadmanage', 'posting');
i have
$phrasegroups = array('threadmanage', 'posting','Geek_Gallery_Popup');
how the script realize the difference ?
The Geek
03-16-2005, 02:38 PM
It looks for:
$phrasegroups = array('threadmanage', 'posting'
And replaces with:
$phrasegroups = array('threadmanage', 'posting', 'geek_articles'
That way it wont be put off by most existing hacks.
Some hacks may confuse it - but it just lets you know that particluar step will need to be done manually.
So far no one has had a hitch that I know of with it.
The way I look at it is: Worse Case Scenario you will have to manually apply some changes.

It looks for:
$phrasegroups = array('threadmanage', 'posting'
And replaces with:
$phrasegroups = array('threadmanage', 'posting', 'geek_articles'
That way it wont be put off by most existing hacks.
Some hacks may confuse it - but it just lets you know that particluar step will need to be done manually.
So far no one has had a hitch that I know of with it.
The way I look at it is: Worse Case Scenario you will have to manually apply some changes.
your other geek program will interfear no? the popup or autolinker... one of the two is there as well

I just checked the package and the gas folder is there. It also includes an images folder (with deafult.jpg) and forums folder.
Double check your download. The gas folder is needed for the install
T3media - it wont interfere with ANY other hacks (that I know of). If you have changed a line that its looking for - it simply does nothing and alerts you to which step you need to do manually.
Also - I dont know where the fear of auto installing comes from. If it cant update or install a line - it doesnt do it (it errs on the side of caution). It Also leaves all changed file in gas/changes. You have to move them to complete the install. That way you can investigate and finalize the changes before finalizing them.
You gotta try it - its quite cool (In my oh so humble opinion)

Same here. My Forums are in my root. If its during the folder install step - I wouldnt stress (though it sounds like it is in the filechanges step).
If the folder intall steps fail - no stress. If the file change step fails - still no stress (you will just have to complete some steps manually)

-Whenever someone clicks the latest reply within a forum, it comes up with "invalid thread specified"
-I had edited 3 templates from GAS 3.0, so from the looks of it, it didn't change to the new templates, right? What I mean is that the template edits still remain, and I don't see the sidebar within article threads (everything else, such as editing/making a thread and showing the options to add a byline, etc. work). Not sure if it's related or not, but when enabling the new look for the forumdisplay, it appears as if the tables are messed up, as what's shown in the following attachment.

While i was testing this on my board i figured out there may be 2 problems.
First one is if you have a soft deleted message as a comment to the article and you are using a fixed style then it messes your style. (Check screenshot1)
Second one is the sidebar allignment. I believe sidebar supposed to be alligned right. As you can see in the attached screenshot2 there is a allignment problem.

gldtn - it should do however I dont think I mastered the removal of the $GAS_article_options from 2 of the file edits. However I didt see it as much of a problem as they will always be empty variables.
djroketboy - you can do this via the forum manager (just as you would do with any forum). Dont know why it didnt create the folders for you - but at least its worked ;)
Omega - was yours an upgrade? Ill look into that. I think I know what the problem might be (when you click the button look at the link... is thepostid or threadid blank?). You will have to revert your templates to get the new look im afraid.
Lizard - Ill tweak the templates but the reason for the alignment is because the article is about 6 characters long ;)
I think I know the problem with the threadbit_deleted... I just added another columnspan to forumdisplay but not to gas_threadbit_deleted.

Only problem I have now is getting th system to reconize a default icon for each board.
"To include images that are specific to a particular forum, place them in a gas/images/forum/{forumid} folder."
For some strange reason, I ended up with both a forum, and a forums folder there. (?)
Anyway, I tried both, doesn't seem to work. I have my root as /forums/gas/images/forum/56/default.jpg
(my forum is http://www.shivasite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=56 )
That right? And wouldn't it be a bit simplier to just have a image called 56.jpg in the same folder as the default? Everything is chmod 777 as well.
The Geek

Shiva - remember that the upgrade makes backups of your files in gas/changes/backup so you always have a fresh set - but still - you are right in the fact you should always do a backup before any hack installation (or vB upgrade IMO)
Lizard - thatnks for that - I think making that td width 100% should do the trick. Ill sort in the next package
Shiva (again ;) ) - There is only 1 system default and that is whatever is in your settings. The gas/forums/{forumid} holds as many forum specific icons as you want - that way when a user brings up the gallery, they can choose from the global images, the forum images, or upload their own.
Saying that - I kind of like the idea of having a potential default for each forumid (if one exists)... let me mull that one over.

The gallery is a collection of all the images of gas/images/forums/{forumid} merged with gas/images
Users can then bring up the gallery and set a predefined header image.

I would love to install this one (am curretly using an older v3 version of this great mod). I've read about the great job that your installer did.
Can the installer also update a future update? I mean, when I update my version to 3.50 and you release a slightly updated version today or tomorrow, is updating an easy job?

TCB: Yup - its all automated now.
I'm upgrading my old v3 geek article system to the v3.5 with the autoupgrader. Unfortunately the script couldn't edit the files like showthread, printhead, etc.
So now I'm in the manual mode and noticed this: my admin files are not in the admincp folder, but in adminxp. So the installer can't copy the index-file from that folder because he's looking for admincp (while vbulletin advices to rename your admin folder).
After installation: when I click on an link to an article or a forumtopic, I receive a "No Thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the webmaster" message. This goes for all forums (also those not listed as article forums).

Do you have safemode on?
If not you may save yourself a load of time by editing the installer and changing the $folderstructure['admincp']="admincp"; to $folderstructure['admincp']="adminxp"; (if that is what was causing it to fail)
The problem you mentioned seems to stem from upgraded GAS3's (I think the problem was there in GAS3). Im looking into it now.
Do you have safemode on?
No, safemode is off
In order to get my forum working again I had to uninstall it and overwrite all edited files with the original files from the gas/backup folder. Now it's working again.
The Geek

try the above file edit I mentioned then run the upgrade steps individually.
If that goes cool do the copying
if that goes cool do the rest.
Let me know how it goes.
I have completely uninstalled this latest version, restored all original files, manually removed the old geek article system (v3), renamed my admin folder to admincp, cmodded the gas folder (and all files and subdir's) to 777, and started the installation.
This time it was done in a few seconds and my messageboard continued to work, no errormessages and my forumdisplay.php?f=11 gave me a wonderfull new Geek Article System 3.5 layout.
On thing that seems odd: the layout of the forumdisplay is new (with the icons, etc.), but the article showthread is the same as I had edited it for the old version (changed the layout a bit), but this time the sidebar is missing (so no thumbnails, ratings, etc.). It seems like the old Geek templates haven't been fully updated?
I'm going to let the dog out, have a dinner and then enjoy your amazing work more :D..... Thank you SO much.

Hey Shiva - not really. Next version (when I get around to it) will allow you to have the GAS settings on a per forum basis - but until then its all or nothing ;)
If you got a text link its most likely that the attachment is a link as well.

Because though I could do it quite easy, it doesn't mean that my members would do it. One of the things I have found, especially with my community, is not only do my members get confused quite easily, they also demand a system as simple and as easy to use as possible. In other words, having a second step to do something they already can do before means they just won't use it then.
If the next version is to include separate settings per forum, then that's cool, as I only need attachments to view on certain boards where a screenshot of a game table is needed, the rest can be default/gallery images. Save the queries.
Another suggestion (well, you do keep asking for them) :)
In that new version, maybe the ability to set the amount of posts displayed for each forum? My default is 25, but that's a lot of work for the server to display, and some boards could be less, while others could stay the same.
I know this one is possible, VBA CMPS does it for pages, and I use it for my RSS feeds as well.
I'm dieing to get to work on adding some extra stuff to this, but you keep adding more versions to it. :)
I will switch to the gallery system for my board, and see how that works. Undoubtably, I will have a few more ideas afterwards. ;)

You sure you chmodded the gas folder?
It makes the changes folder for you during install.
You can do this though:
Manually create the following folder structure:
-gas
|__changes
|___admincp
|___backup
|___includes
Then try rerunning the autoinstall portion of the installer.

Okay, found a problem on my end.
Uploaded images are working fine, but are not displaying. Looking at my ftp, I see they are being chmod to 600 when they are uploaded.
My "Comma seperated list of usergroup id's that can upload image headers (leave 0 or blank for all)" is set to 0
Just the actual images, the folder it creates is 777.
Edit: Adding a bit more here... The script created a folder called 1 in my images folder, and that's where all files are being uploaded to, but of course, they don't show up in the gallery and are chmod to 600.
The forum id though shows 56, and loading in my images through ftp displays them fine in the gallery, and chmod to my ftp default 644
hi,
I havn't a problem but something I don't understand... :(
Giving the right to someone to write article :
- do we need to write an upload tool to insert images into the article ?
- or does it exist a simple way to insert image into ?
Also, I don't understand your 3rd screenshot ( https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=24781&stc=1&thumb=1 ) which shows few images....
I tryed to upload more images... nothing changes : it shows one image, the last uploaded. (and each article have its own right image)
It would be great if the script could help writers to manages images to insert into articles (like SPIP does for example, or any other CMS)

Shiva - check the chmod on gas/images and also gas/images/1. Maybe its something with how your sever uploads into the tmp folder. I can always add a chmod command during the move though so let me know.
The gas/images structure is gas/images/(userid split by '/') s o if your user id was 10 your folder would be gas/images/1/0
Fabz - Permissions like that are handled through the standard forum permissions. If they have permission to make threads in forum - they have permission to write articles. If they have permission to post replies - they can make comments.
The 3rd screenie is the Article Header Image Gallery/uploader. It displays all images found in gas/images and gas/images/forums/(forumid) so the user can just browse and click or upload their own image.
As far as managing images for insert - try the Geek Gallery Popup - its what I use (not sure if that was what you ar after though)
It displays all images found in gas/images and gas/images/forums/(forumid) so the user can just browse and click or upload their own image.
huh... in gas/images I cannot find any [forumid] directory...
instead I found gas/images/2 (which contains 1/2/2 directories) or
gas/images/7
but 2 or 7 is neither the forumid or threadid
I cannot understand what's wrong.
Images are well uploaded but in some directories GAS seems to ignore.
Geek popup shows only default.jpg image.
I checked paths in settings... nothing wrong.
I'm running now vb 3.0.7 and this is a fresh GAS install.

Yeah geek, it's all chmod 777. Tried it again, and any uploaded images to my folder from the gallery upload page is chmod 600. Since I am user 1, my root is:
/var/www/html/forums/gas/images/1
I guess you will have to add a chmod command then.
I'm wondering if my members would go to the trouble with making thumbnails, wouldn't it be better if instead of having all these seperate folders for stock images, we can instead just have a master folder containing all of them as a option? I have several categories that will use the same set of icons.
Also, I have made some standard images and noticed a couple things. I select a image already loaded in from my forum ID folder. This works great, but I also notice that it makes a copy of that image in my ID folder as well. Also, if I use the same image for another thread as a header image, it will make another copy of the same image, add a number in front of it, and place it in my ID folder. In other words, 3 articles use the same image, but use 3 seperate image files.
Here's a sample page: article page (http://www.shivasite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=110)
If you notice, all 3 images are the same, but the system assigns a different file name to each of them, and this image is selectable directly from the gallery upload page
Wouldn't it be better to instead not even have it make a image at all and place it in the posters folder, just link to that forum ID file? That way the server wouldn't have to work to display 3 images that are the same, just has to do it once. Save a lot of space as well. :) (By the way, those 3 files were automatically chmod to 777)
shiva

fabz, I was confused about it as well, I think geek meant you have to create a folder, name it the forum ID number, chmod it to 777, and upload the thumbnail images that you want the members to select from.
The Geek

Hi Shiva - I guess a low down on how the image system works in GAS is needed for clarification.
There are 4 different ways to have an image appear at the top of the article.
The posters avatar. To get the posters avatar to appear in the article - the following settings must be - er, set:
Use first attachment thumbnail as avatar - no
Allow users to upload an image for the Article Display? - no
I would also suggest setting Use the legacy forumdisplay template? - yes
Use the first attachment thumbnail. This way, the first thumbnail in the article will appear as the image at the top of the article instead of the users avatar. If choosing this option - I would STRONGLY advise that you use the Legacy Forumdisply. Why? Because in vB, each attachment is a dynamic image that requires a query to be run. In other words, if you have 30 threads diaplying in your forumdisplay - there will be 30 additional queries. Remember - this is how vB does attachments!
To use this option, set the following:
Use first attachment thumbnail as avatar - yes
Allow users to upload an image for the Article Display? - no
STRONGLY urged: Use the legacy forumdisplay template? - yes
Allow users to upload their own Article header image. This option displays an 'image' button when creating/editing and article. Clicking it will pop open a global gallery window and an upload box (this is controlled by usergroup settings in GAS). This will allow users to upload an image from their computer and it will then be resized to the maximum dimensions that you sepcify in your settings. The system discards the original and keeps the thumbnailed image for the header. It places the thumbnail in gas/images/(userid split by '/'). If your userid is 357 than your images will be in gas/images/3/5/7.
To use this option:
Use first attachment thumbnail as avatar - no
Allow users to upload an image for the Article Display - yes
Comma seperated list of usergroup id's that can upload image headers - put in comma seperated list of usergroupid's or 0 for all.
Use a gallery image. The gallery is a collection of images that are pre loaded by yourself that allows users to choose from a variety of images that you allow. This is a great option if you want to have some standard defaults that go with your style, or if you ONLY want a certain set to be chosen from (as you can turn off the upload feature and only let them choose from the gallery).
The gallery appears when the user clicks the image button when creating or editing an article (as long as you have enabled it). The gallery displays all images from the gas/images folder combinded with all images (if any) from the gas/images/forums/(current forumid) folder.
When a user selects a gallery image - it is then copies to their gas/images/(userid split by '/') folder. This is to allow you to remove or change gallery images without breaking existing links. I am looking at adding an option to link direct to the gallery image (primarily for those with safemode enabled) however this wont be for a little while longer.
To use this option:
Use first attachment thumbnail as avatar - no
Hope this helps clear up some question about how the Image system works.

Depends on what you mean.
There are a coupld of old add on moduels for vbaCMPS that still work for this (though I am working on new ones). Other than that - it integrates about the same as a normal forum does.
In other words - you can show polls from your articles and latest topics in vbaCMPS or you can exclude the article forums if you want.
There are not really too many settings and the defaults are pretty much the ones to go by. You really only have to set the forumids and you are good to go.

The autoinstaller moves all files into gas/changes to modify them. Once modified it leaves them there for you to move back when you are satisfied everythings been done.
On that note I would recommend that you download the files to your computer and then re-upload them. That way they stay 'owned' by you and not apache.
I would also download your gas/changes/backup folder.
Once all is said and done, delete the changes folder in gas/

Just updated the package to 3.51
This is really just to fix a couple of very minor bugs - there is no need to rush out to upgrade.
Did:
GAS_threadbit_deleted was 1 columnspan short
Added split article and merge article options
Modified formdisplay with a minor edit to prevent broken BB code when auto synopsising the forum preview
Did a real readme (in fact its like a novel)
Added new functionality whereby if you have a gas/images/forums/(forumid)/default.jpg file, the system will use that as the default instead of the gas/images/deafult.jpg
optimized resizing code
Wrote 3.5x upgrade script.
IMPORTANT: If you are using 3.5x then DO NOT USE THE gas3_install.php script... use the gas3_upgrade.php script!!! The upgrade script is somewhat similar to the installer... it makes the needed change to forumdisplay and dumps it in gas/changes/35-351 folder
Check out the readme... it addresses most questions about the system.

All sorted, thanks :)

Thanks,

In the article tools pull down menu just as you would on a normal thread (might have to revert your GAS_showthread template)

Strange.... I tried several things, even verified the phrases existed, but the didn't start showing up until I manually made a change to the template.
But, still, very cool.
I found one quirk... if the [Read More] occurs in the midst of a [ color ] tag it breaks; the lead-in tag is shown on the screen.

huh. I specially coded a new routine to try and take care of something like that.
Guess ill look into it when I get back (away on business again!)

Cool, here we go again... :)
how hard would it be to include a google adsense block in one of the articles (like aligned to the left or right?)
Would it just be a matter of adding a div tag and the adsense code in the article (will vb parse the javascript in the post if "allow html" is enabled)?

awesome. The upgrade went perfect, which has to be the first time with my site. :)
I had to edit my GAS_showthread template as well, but worked great.
The default images per board, absolute genesis who ever came up with that one. ;)
So far so good. Time to get to work. :)
EDIT: Still great, but you forgot to add the forced chmod of the file upload from the galllery to the userid folders. :)

Great to see this new version released, love it. Thank you very much The Geek, very professional coding...
I have a problem during using auto installer, the file showthread.php got screw up during upgrade, agter that I had to manually finished the rest and installed was fine, but I see the article has double showing and same as comment. When put back the original showthread, it display normal but of course no article function show up as its a normal showthread.
below is the one screw up showthread.php, could you check it for me please, thanks..
Never mind , I fixed it manually, very detail installation. Clicked installed.
Thank you.
I have two strange templates since running the 3.50 > 3.51 upgrade.
The first is called "G" just on its own and the other is called "<" both under the username Geek.
Any ideas Geek?
I'm sorry to bother you The Geek...
I upgraded to 3.51
I created a directory according the forumid and chmoded to 0777.
If I upload images and images.... It shows well in the article header. But if I click the "image" button, I only get de default.jpg image. No images galery I already uploaded though they seem to be right uploaded in gas/images/[userid]
What's could be wrong ?

Quick Question: I have been digging though the style manager trying to find what CSS element the mod uses for the default bold black 1pix boarder color around the article images, does any one know which one it is?

Geek said he's away for a while, but I can answer a couple questions, though they are answered in the readme.html file as well.
Fabz, you have to create your folders in the gas/images/forums folder
so your ftp root should be /var/www/html/forums/gas/images/forums
create a new folder in there, and name it by the forum board ID
so if I want to display images for one board:
http://www.shivasite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=111
I name that folder 111. I then chmod it to 777, and then load in my images to that folder.
My ftp root is then /var/www/html/forums/gas/images/forums/111
Loading in a image in there will then display that image in the gallery so a member can select it as a image for his header.
A image named default.jpg in that folder will be the default image used by that board if there's no image assigned to that article. My example has two custom images, as well as 3 images using the default.
h**p://www.YOURSITE.com/gas/images/forums/111/default.jpg
is how the link should look if you have your forum in the root
or
h**p://www.YOURSITE.com/FOLDER/gas/images/forums/111/default.jpg
if you have your forum in a folder
ShawnV
No idea on the table border, mine is there because I put it there, but I would think the script uses the CSS defined in the theme. I didn't see any defined border code in the templates, but maybe that would be a better place to look
Razz
I have them as well. has to be a small error, harmless really, just one of those funny things. :)

Admincp >> Geek Article System >> GAS settings >> Forums >> Put the forumid which you want to post articles under. After that save it and go to that forum and open a new thread ;) be aware that if you have other threads in that forum already all of them will turn to articles.
Thank you Shiva for your help. ;)

Got it to work? Cool
I could answer that one, because I asked the same question. :)
Lot of fun this one, but my members are just rolling their eyes at me as I like to make a meal out of things sometimes.
Yes Shiva, thank you.
Sometimes I may not understand everything because of my english ;)
I now would like to integrate FCKEditor which would be very usefull to help writers for HTML articles (and includes an upload tool).
Did anyone tryed to ?

Scroll down to the PHP Core section and look for safe_mode

Geek, I just got a strange problem as well. My image varification for registrations doesn't display anymore. The forum still thumbnails everything okay, but people can't register. Reason I'm bring it up is the only thing that's changed is GAS in two weeks, no other hacks, upgrades etc, and people could register fine before I added the article system.
Very very strange, looks like it's not reconizing the GD library, but it's fine everywhere else, and I have no hacks in registration.php.

yeah my installation steps are fine, but i know my GD Library is ++++ed up right now, so thats what im thinking is causing this.
Hello,
I just upgraded 3.51 and I got an error after I edited an article. This is what I got:
A Runtime Error hs occured.
Do you wish to debug?
Line: 336
Error: 'null' is null or not an object
If I ignore it, everything works fine. The install went smooth, and no errors were reported. I placed the files from the 35.351 folder to their respective locations as well.
I get that error after I edit something and the page refreshes with the save. I also got it after adding a new article. Any Ideas?
Here is what I found at line 336 when I did a "View Source" for that page.
331
332 <script type="text/javascript">
333 <!--
334 var SESSIONURL = "";
335 var IMGDIR_MISC = "http://www.iguanacenter.com/images/misc";
336 // -->
337 </script>
This error is not reported when using Mozilla. Just IE 6.

If you installed it right it should be placed just above "Styles & Templates" drop-down menu from your forum/admincp/. If you are sure you updated the phrases and it's still not showing, you can try to go back and open you geek_article installation and re-run the step that installs the phrases only.

The problem is in you're PHP configuration. Look for the following in php.ini
allow_call_time_pass_reference = Off
This needs to be 'On'
You'll be be able to see it using the phpinfo() function, if the server isn't yours. You should be able to switch it on with a .htaccess file containing;
php_flag allow_call_time_pass_reference On

They don't validate to very minor stuffs such as a spaced out code "< img" or a missing "alt="text", etc.., I would really not worry about this at all. But if really want this to be fixed I would edit the custom templates that this hack has added to your vB.
