Yes it's quite hard to read this....
I've never seen such a good support.
This script is amazing and well done.
In case of problems, you should read all docs, all posts, and search for mistakes...

You cannot say "it doesn't work" without trying/searching, The Geek has done a huge very good script.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: imagecreatefromgif() in c:\program files\easyphp1-8\www\forum\includes\functions_geekarticles_images .php on line 124

but if I have it but directly on the waiter, in the window of upload, the images it are well :(

Hi Guys - I have just crawled in from a very long trade show and jumped on as soon as I stepped in the door ;)

There is a lot to catch up here on the past couple of days - but it looks like most has been covered by other users - thanks!

I would assume that problems like 'imagecreatefromgif()' are cuaed by your VB options selection for your GD library not being correct (check PHPinfo for your version)

Never bothered to run through a validator so Im not overly shocked. Ill put it on my todo list ;)

If you are not seeing the GAS admincp menu - either your phrases didnt build right (check the readme for info) or the dile edit of admincp/index.php falied. Edit your admincp/index.pho fiel and search for GAS.

Regarding the importer: I just updated it to fix a typo on that line mentioned

Venom - Did you have an earlier version installed? You may have to revert your gas templates. Otherwise - check the settings (though the default is to show it)

Hope I got everything guys.

Thanks

been a long time since ive been impressed by a hack and just installed this to test board and it works first time.Is well neat and the layout of the articles in forum display is spot on - but the actual post is even better and gotta love that box thats displays attachments.

Nice work m8 and i clicked install.

Also you where right - i had to edit a phrase and save but besides that never got one error at all.

Also let me credit you on that installer - never seen one like it :)

Geek,

How can I remove the black outline border around the article images, with the new patch it's now gone on the message body but its still there in the topics page and I would rather not have a border or be able to change it's color?

Thanks in advance.

The Geek I followed the upgrade instructions to the leter. When I couldnt get it to show the bar even when the options said it was on I tried the uninstall.

The uninstall didnt remove the templates or phrases. I can remove the phrases but the templates I cant. When I click on one to highlight it the only button that works is the customize one. Any help/ideas?

I cant remove the following phrases...
setting_GAS_show_tools_title

How can I find all the phrases in phpmyadmin so I can mass delete them? What about the emplates?

The Geek
03-22-2005, 07:52 AM
Venomx - hmm. Ill be more than happy to do this for you if you want to PM me needed details. Sorry your having such a pain there.
The phrases will be in the phrases table and the templates in the templates table.
It sounds like an earler install placed them in teamplate and languageid -1 (which I did do) however that shouldnt affect your upgrade/reinstall of the new version.

Like I said - drop me details if you want me to give you a hand.

ShawnV- edit functions_geekarticles and replace
$post['GAS_thumb_as_avatar']="<img class='thumbnail' src='$GAS_setting[rt_icon_path]' style='border: 2px #000000;padding:2px;'/>";

The Geek I got most of them deleted I think. Except I didnt touch the templates like thread and newthread whicxh it seems to have auto edited.

Also the table datastore has into for GAS in it... I deleted the one named GAS* but the other two colums in there also have GAS stuff which I am scared to touch...

I really want to use this hack. I liked it even though I am just starting out and dont have any articles to post.

I am thinking about it but am scared to try again. Thats a lot of edits to do for it to not work again.
I hate auto installs because I like to know whats being changed.
Why did it edit the newthread, editpost etc templates?

The Geek
03-22-2005, 09:17 AM
to include the $GAS_article_options variable which holds the byline, synopsis, image, etc...

Why not just do the auto installer then scan through the manual listings to see what was changed ;)

Remember that backups are made of your files too - its always a quick n easy revert :)

Good luck in your choice

Could you make it work for vBPortal, so that the news forum (that uses the Geek Article Hack) which is projected by vBPortal on the homepage projects the pre-installed images instead of the attached images.

I can offer you a test site with all the needed software to work with.

I will be re-writing the featured/random/latest modules for vbadvancedCMPS and can most likely do one for vbportal as all functions will be in a seperate file but I have to catch up on everything else right now. Ill let you know when as I will need what you are offering... sadly you will have to wait until then though :(

If I get to the articals from the nav bar... (you know... yoursite.com > your forum's name > Articals if I click the artical up there the layout is the old layout not the new fancy one.

curious.
If users click on the artical's location from say vbinex main page or just on a listing somewhere they will get this layout.

The Geek -

I'm having a bit of trouble on with uploading images...I'm getting an open_basedir error:

Warning: open_basedir restriction in effect. File is in wrong directory in /includes/functions_geekarticles_images.php on line 104

I'm usually able to edit the offending files by placing in the full path, but the line that seems to be causing the trouble is:

if (move_uploaded_file($file_source,$dest)){

Any ideas on how I could fix this?

ok when u do a new article say i upload an attachment and the first one is a picture well i want that pic resized and when people go to forumdisplay where it shows all the articles the pic will appear there instead of the default one.
I want your article for a movie database im planning as i liek the layout a lot so to save people having to shrink the pic for the small display on forumdisplay it all gets done for them.

basically its a bit like that hack that was out where it allowed a pic to be shown on forumdisplay

lasto - If I follow right - it does this.

You have a couple options:
1- turn on 'Use first attachment' setting. This way the very first thumbnail is used as the article header and forumdisplay
2- To hell with uploading an attachment - simply upload the pic straight into the article header which will autosize it to your dimensions and save you 1 query per thumbnail.

Am I still ahving a brain fart about what you are trying to do?

Geek: how hard would it be to include a google adsense block in one of the articles (like aligned to the left or right?)

Would it just be a matter of adding a div tag and the adsense code in the article (will vb parse the javascript in the post if "allow html" is enabled)?

Could use a little assistance here...

When I try to upload a new Article Image instead of the newspaper lookin one I'm getting this error in the upload window..

rrr - I havent used adsense but I would imagine it would be the exact same as adding it to any other page. I would assume you would ad it to the GAS_showthread template and it wouldnt matter if allow html was enabled or not.

Installed last night on a vb3.07 forum running cmps1.01
Ran into some trouble with the installer, probably due to some changes I have made in order to wrap my forum homes pages with the portal modules, but I wanted to let you know what's up.

One error: "Can not complete change to forumdisplay.php - step 209 as I can not find the text to replace. You will have to manually complete this step.
Looks like there were some errors reverting the files. manual changes (link will open in new window) before continuing."

step 209
in forumdisplay.php, replace:
eval('print_output("' . fetch_template('FORUMDISPLAY') . '");');

with:

// === GAS step 208 ===
if ($GAS_setting['rt_template']){

eval('print_output("' . fetch_template($GAS_setting['rt_template']) . '");');

}else{
eval('print_output("' . fetch_template('FORUMDISPLAY') . '");');
}
// === /GAS step 209 ===

MINE WAS:
eval('$HTML = "' . fetch_template('FORUMDISPLAY') . '";');
print_portal_output($home, $HTML);

So I did this instead:
// === GAS step 208 ===
if ($GAS_setting['rt_template']){

eval('print_output("' . fetch_template($GAS_setting['rt_template']) . '");');

}else{

eval('$HTML = "' . fetch_template('FORUMDISPLAY') . '";');
print_portal_output($home, $HTML);
}
// === /GAS step 209 ===

Wasn't sure what to do after that, the installer doesn't start up again on its own, so I tried running again, got some 'this is already done, skipping this step' messages, then it appeared to complete the rest of installation. However, at the end, I discovered that it hadn't, and I had to go back and manually do all edits after step 209. Once I did that, all appeared to be as it should be. Thanks for the chuckles in the install file.

Now that I've given you some feedback that I assume you want, I need to pick your brain. It doesn't appear to be displaying the designated article forum as designed. Hoping you/someone can/will help me figure out how to either
a] use this changed code appropriately so I can display the articles forum "wrapped" the same as my others
OR
b] Figure out how to use and call a different showthread template for the forums I am designating as articles. I really don't care if *they* are wrapped, actually, but the regular forums do need to stay as-is, and I am a rank ametuer with conditionals and the rest... everything I do is by trial and error guesswork....
Thanks in advance. :)
(Voting for this hack for HOTM now!!)

Thanks Carb. The changes should have been made on the other files - it will have told you if it couldnt have done those (like step 208). Are you sure you copied the files from gas/changes to your forum?

I am not sure what you mean by wrapped. A link would help out if possible.

I am using your Geek Auto Link.

I am also using your vBaGallery thumbs insert in post so I see you are familiar with vBa hacks.

Please consider making a hack for vBaLinks to work with GAL. Any title in Links database should automatically be recognized in GAS when typed in and parsed as link to the detail in vBaLinks (not the external link, the details one).

Mea culpa on the first one, that explains why I had to do the rest of the mods by hand. Guilty of one of my own biggest pet peeves, failure to follow details in directions. *makes disgusted sound in lieu of slapping self* But I must have done okay with the hand-mods, because nothing has changed since I fixed that.

Will PM you all the info and links, including the mod I used to 'wrap' the forums with the portal, I am sure I am probably using the wrong term there, that's just how I think of it.

(Which all means that your installer worked perfectly, and this little problem is surely due to this other hack and my own incompetence at 2AM.)

edit GAS_forumdisplay and change:

Ok install it but a problem with the installer, it says that directory GAS is not there.
But it is there! With cmod777. Ik make the subdirs manual and it works fine. Strange.

Missing phrase in Template GAS_threadbit stands now Posted by, but must be: $vbphrase[geek_articles_posted_by] and why not use the global one?? $vbphrase[posted_by] ?

Also with last activity why not use the global one: $vbphrase[last_activity]

And a dubble phrase: geek_articles_rate_article and geek_articles_rate_this_article and a other one:
geek_articles_search_article and geek_articles_search_this_article

Upload problems - Check to make sure that the image did not exceed your max file size option. If it does - it doesnt get uploaded at all.

to set the default sort option to something liske title - do this:

in includes/functions_geekarticles.php find:

}elseif (THIS_SCRIPT=='forumdisplay'){

$GAS_setting['is_article']=in_array(intval($_REQUEST['f']),$GAS_forums);;
if ($GAS_setting['is_article']){

Thanks for the advice Geek. However, I looked into that already. Max settings are 100 x 100. I tried 100 x 100 and 50 x 50. After I BROWSE and find a file to upload, I click "Upload"...then that same window just turns blank. Any ideas? I have GD+2 installed.

Update!

Figured it out! It was....of course....my fault. The absolute path to images was:

/var/www/html/gas/images

...I had to change it to.....

/var/www/html/forums/gas/images

Hi,

the hack sounds very interesting but I've one question:

When I write and article and want to release it for the users.
Where does the hack put this article in?
Can I choose a forum or do I have to put the article in only one forum (for e.g. "My Articles")

Rich

Hello,
In the default settings for the Geek Articles, you need to assign forums that the modification will pull from. The forums you select by id will then turn into articles. If you remove that forums ID from the default settings, it will return as a regular forum.

If you are looking to just have certain posts in a particlar forum appear as articles, while others are regular posts, I think you will require further assistance. To my knowledge, this enhancement isn't capable of doing that. You need to assign the forums in the admincp.

Hi,
you must choose a folder (a forum) that will only be for articles, you can't mix articles and usual threads.
When you write it, like a thread, it's online directly (no draft possibility, maybe in next version ;) )

The problem I encountered also is when writing full html articles, because vbulletin's text box isn't done for html editing. So you have to remove all blank spaces, put all text in one only line etc.

That's why I asked if someone succeeded in installing some online editors like FCKeditor or htmlarea on this hack, that would be the best thing it could happen (for me ;) ) on this fabulous hack.

The Geek

Can articles and normal threads co-exist in same forum? Nope - Not sure why anyone would want that anyway. You can choose any number of 'article' forums anywhere on the site. Rich was right in the fact that all you do is specify the forumids you want to hold articles - put that id in and bam! they are all articles. The posting, reading, deleting, etc... permissions is all handled via the forum permissions. If they have permission to post a new thread - they have permission to create a new article. If they have permission to reply to others threads - they can comment.

There are no plans to impliment a draft version. I think there is a hack around here that does that - ill look into it as its a pretty grovvy idea.

Other than that - as I said - everything you do in a normal thread/post you can do in an article (and more).

Hey Shiva. Havent tried this but it should work!

edit your includes/functions_geekarticles_images.php file and replace

@copy($simg,$spath . $dest);
@chmod($spath . $dest, 0777);
return $dest;

with

@copy($simg,$spath . $dest);
@chmod($spath . $dest, 0644);
return $dest;

and for uploaded images (same file):

after:

createthumb($dest, $dest,$GAS_setting['max_upload_width'],$GAS_setting['max_upload_height']);

put:

@chmod($dest, 0644);

Like I said - I havent tried this myself and the issue may not be the chmod - it could be the image ownership which is another issue.

Ill look into the opera issue soon. I hope that helps!

I just upgraded to 3.51 today so we just got this pretty Synopsis box. I'm probably going to go through and put in synposis files. When I click on the "Image" button it says something like.. No input file specified.

That's what happens when I go in and edit trying to put an image in as the avatar.

Is there a way you could have a person select from all the attachments which one they want as the avatar?

you mean a gallery? If so - its built in. You only need to upload images to gas/images and/or gas/images/forumid

Check the new readme - it goes into detail on all that.

Remember - if the synopsis box is empty - it usees the first x amount of characters from the post. There is nothing FORCEING users to fill in the synopsis box - but thats pretty easy logic to add if needed.

That option isn't working... it just says Input File not available or whatever. Well at least that's what it says when I go into an existing review and try to edit the picture.

It also happens with a new article whenever I click that Image button

Hi !

do someone has an idea : when writting html articles, it's very very strict.
For example, if the entire article is html, done with any html editor, it inserts break lines in code, and tabs.
As break line in html is not showed, but in vbulletin, yes, so that you need to correct all code before publishing.
Any idea to get it easier ?

Thank you Geek, so I think it should be a good idea to include in your script a small list box when editing a new article, and asking whereas it's pure HTML content or "none specified"
In that case, may it be possible in forumdisplay to avoid vbulletin analysing html content ?

For security reasons this could only be possible for certain usergroups.
I don't know if you see what I mean or if it should be better for the script.

I have a small MOD request, if someone is kind enough to help me:

Firstly, I love this Article system, however I'm not using it for it's [original] intended purpose. I'm using this as a product review system. I've altered the phrases so everything is fine there...what I'm hoping to do is modify the system in a way so, instead of having one box to write the article, there are 4 boxes total, then combine the input of all three boxes and post it. More specifically I'm looking for a text field for product Pro's, product Con's, then the main section for posting their final conclusion, etc. Doing so the end-user will have a standard to follow so that all the reviews are of the same organized layout. The Pro text area and the Con's text area can be added just below the synopsis text area. If there's a coder willing to help me with this please reply on this forum or e-mail me at fuse3k-at-gmail.com. I would be forever in debt to you.

Having no luck uploading custom avatars or linking to them. No other hacks installed since this one, except for I just now tried your auto-avatar resizer hack, hoping that might fix things. Had already moved avatars into the file system instead of the db successfully, but that didn't solve the problem for me as it did someone else in this thread. (Uploading to articles forums works perfectly.)
Help, please.

EDIT: I just uninstalled a profile hack to block animated avatars that had been installed before this one, and all is fine again, now.... sorry to confuse the issue. There must be a conflict there in the two hacks somewhere.

I am running both cinqs vbarticles and this one side by side with no problems, either.
I use cinqs system for all of my free content, and this one for my premium content. I would love it now if I could just figure out how to install this hack a second time, with different phrasing... I use the current installation in my recipe forums and have changed all the phrases appropriately for that. But I am second-guessing myself now because I also have review forums, and I would like to use the system in those forums, but with different phrases. Willing to pay for help with the necessary modifications, if this is possible, but it is over my head...

Geek, by the way, I edited my above post about the avatar problem, it appears to have been caused by a conflict with a prior hack I had installed to block animated avatars. :) Thanks for your offer to help, though! Glad the avatar problem is sorted. And I just checked my PM box here and I have no record of any PMs from you. Check your sent items!!! I think I sent it to you via the vbadvanced forums, since it was related to the Gallery hack mod that I downloaded from there. Will go copy it and send it to you here instead. If you expect a new gallery popup to come out soon, however, then I am happy to wait. In that case, just let me know when you get my PM and I will delete the admin account for you if it's not needed.
Also happy to hear about the particular phrasegroups by forum in the works, that solves EVERYTHING for me and will make this hack sooooooo user-friendly. Happy to wait on that, too, always plenty of other tasks on my To-Do list.

Geek: Is there any posibility to integrate an editor like FCKeditor? Swaping it for the vbulletin one? Or as an option in a seperate articleedit file?

I need a good way to get my articles properly html-formated with paragraphs and headings. The vbulletin wysiwig only leaves a div with br tags in it. Not pretty code...

Propper Html formating would be usefull for SEO, and readers using speachbrowsers.

A way to only allow HTML for the article and not the comments would also be very handy.

Thanks for a great addition!

if there are issues with html causing layout problems with the auto synopsis features - all you have to do is add the tags to the pre_for_broken_tags function in functions_geekarticles.php

I didnt add the extra HTML tags as I didnt think many used html in their threads.
Which brings us on to the FCKeditor question. I guess I can look into it - though I wouldnt hold out for it. The purpose of the system is to use as much vB3 as possible. Changing editors could prove to be a lot of work for this mod and possibly out of the scope of the project. If using the FCKeditor is a serious need for you - you may be better off checking out cinqs article hack as that is the editor he uses (if I remember right).
The best solution would most liekly be a hack that allowed you to use the FCKeditor instead of the VB editor regardless of if you were using this hack or not.

Glad to have helped Carb.

vBarticles is an option, but i would primarly want to use vb3 to handle my articles. And the vbulletin wysiwyg is nice for posts, but not articles - 'static' website content.

FCKeditor would be an addition for websiteowners to optimize content. I believe user submitted articles should be HTML free.

Whats really needed is to get the first post - the article - to parse HTML, and deny HTML for the comments. :)

Another thought: There is a thread category/prefix hack (here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=61494) ), it would be nice to integrate that with this one, so when a thread is categorized as 'Article' or 'review' then it will be displayed as an article. Then articles could be spread througout the forums.

The Geek
04-02-2005, 02:40 PM
Thats not really how the system works. It would be a nightmare to check each thread title for diaplay as an article.
The other problem is that it would be a serious incontinuity issue. I think users would be odded out by some threads coming up one way and others another. My personal opinion is to keep articles with articles, reviews with reviews and threads with threads.

THe HTML for first post only is easy. The FCKeditor - who knows yet. Ill look into it - I just have plenty more on my plate right now.

Thanks for the feedback

I have a quick question.. Im getting the following error upon install :

cant find root directory gas
Make sure you have created this in your forum directory.

My issue is that my vbulletin install is in the /forums sub-directory, its not sitting in my root directory, so I think thats where it is getting confused. Is there a setting in the install script that I can edit to add the /forums directory so the auto-install works as expected?

Thanks, and this script looks GREAT! Excellent work!

Hi The Geek,

may I suggest you some improvement ?

When creating multipages articles should be great if each page includes a "table of content" on top, with links automatically created to each section (page).
Each page could manually include a [ page_title ] to give a content name.
(why not also creating an option <show table of content> : yes or no)

I think it's better vor viewers, and easier to navigate through an article.

Just an idea...

My GD version is showing as "bundled (2.0.28 compatible)". In Vboptions it is set to GD Version 2+.

I am unable to upload a article image properly with Internet Explorer. It will upload the file, chmod it correct (0777) (image gets uploaded to server with correct path/permissions) but it won't auto insert it in the new article window, it instead posts the new uploaded article image thumbnail at the very top of the upload pop up window instead of inserting it into the new article default image window and closing the upload pop up. It also won't allow selecting of default images, they don't do anything when clicked. I am however able to do everything with the article image uploading/selecting/clicking without a problem in Firefox. The images upload/insert correctly in Firefox from the pop up upload box so I don't know what the issue is. All IE security is trusted for the domain and pop up blocking and all that is off.

I am running IE 6/Firefox 1.0.2 on XP SP2 on vb 3.0.6 w/3.0.7 security patch and GAS 3.5.1 newly installed. Everything else seems to work correctly on both browsers except the auto switch/upload default image in IE.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried it on another computer here and it's IE worked fine, so I guess mine has some issue (that's why I use firefox as my primary now) -- I haven't used IE in a while, I just use it to make sure things display correctly on both browsers.

Don't know why it's doing that on my IE. My firefox has no issues.

sounds like your ie js is screwed. Ive had similar issues with IE before. it makes sense though. THe opener is the window that opened the popup. if it thinks its null, then there aint no way it can send the image back.
Not sure how you can 'repair' your ie js - but that is the problem!

BTW - please take a second to click install if you think its a keeper.

Thanks!

Looks like some files got messed up. I had to do the following fix to get IE to run the js code (Windows XP SP2):

I fixed this issue by clicking on "Start Menu" - "Run", and entering the following
entries on command prompt:

regsvr32 msscript.ocx [enter]
regsvr32 dispex.dll [enter]
regsvr32 vbscript.dll [enter]

If anyone else has the IE not uploading article images problem on their machine, the above fix should solve it.

I think another user installed it - the only problem that I can think of was that the attachment table changed in later versions. Therefore one of the steps had to be manually manuvered.

You can always give it a go - but skip straight to the file modifications bit and do each step at a time (file structure, copy files, modify files). Chances are you will need to do several of the steps manually if your board is that hacked up... but if it turns into a mess - just dont copy the changed files from gas/changes and your forum wont be touched.

Hope this helps

did you chmod the gas folder (and ALL the content folders) to 0777?
Can you create a folder in gas/images/1/ (chmod 0777) and then try to re-upload?

In a nut shell - the folder '1' (which is an array of your userid) isnt getting created. Usually its a chmod error (never been anything else).

OK, I changed all directories below gas to 777. The error message now is:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: imagecreatefromjpeg() in /home/domains/forum.m1911.org/includes/functions_geekarticles_images.php on line 122

One more thing, in the hack's settings in admincp, even though I enter the "URL to default image" as relative (for example: gas/images/default.jpg) when the settings are saved, it is shown as /gas/images/default.jpg (with the additional / in the beginning).

And I clicked install with a great pleasure. If I can solve this issue, this will take a lot of pain of my back. I have gone to some wierd solutions to be able to show articles in my forums.

News:

Updated 18/3/05 to version 3.51!!! Posts for 3.51 start here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=627336#post627336)
We are up for HOTM - vote if you think it desrves it (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=78141)!

History

Originally, I looked into other article systems to integrate with my forums but just got irritated over and over again as I found the other offering out there very limiting for my needs. I wanted to use my members usergroup permissions, the search facility (so when someone did a search for 'bob' both articles AND threads appeared on one page), I also wanted wysiwyg editing and vBs attachment system. Well, I accomplished 99% of my needs with the Geek Article System 2.0
Why 3.0? While the 2.0 was fine for my needs, many users began asking for a far more complex system that took the beauty of 2.0 and added popular features in the other article systems.

Here are the features in a nutshell:

[b]Integrates 100% into vB. No importing forums or creating special groups. Simply mark forum as an 'Article' forum and instantly all threads become articles. Dont like it anymore? Simply remove the ID and the therads and forums go back to normal.
Whatever you can do in a thread or post, you can do with the GAS3 system (uploading attachments, smiles, BBcode, various editors, yadayadayada)
Adding on the above point: all the differing vB editors (wysiwyg, etc..), usergroup permissions (heck - anything you can set for a forum you can set in this - AND MORE!) why> because it is totally integrated!
Create multiple pages in your post by simply putting anywhere in your post.
[b]The first thumbnail in an article substitutes the posters avatar (switchable via admincp)
Upload header images and have them auto resize
Choose header images from a global (or forum specific) gallery
Integrated article byline.
Synopsis - allows users to give a summary that appears on the new forumdisplay
New forumdisplay shows article header image and synopsis (if no synopsis then the first X amount of characters from the article is used)
Synopisis allows BBCode
Integrates with the Geek AutoLink system (optional)
Allows you to post as other users
Article sidebar that shows the article rating, your rating, the rating form, article tools, and article attachments (all toggable via admincp)
An auto installer/upgrader/uninstaller that makes all file edits for you!
A whole host of other tiddlybits that I wont bore you with

[BREAK]

Take a look at the images.

noart.jpg is a standard output.
art.jpg is how it looks when I enable the forum as an 'article forums'.

It looks like to me if there is a 2nd "list" or a combo of a few BB codes triped it up ? Or did I goof on something ?

Anyone? Please? I'm on a limited budget for this site but I'd be willing to pay a coder to do this for me if it's reasonable.

Did you follow the readme?
Did you copy files from gas/changes back to their nromal directory?
Did you get any errors during the uninstall?
What was wrong in the first place?

Enquiring minds want to know ;)

no errors during un install. yues i read readme.
the sutff in gas/changes ? was i meant to re copy them after un install, you said to remove that directory when un installiong?

man i am copping hardcore sql errors into my email like 70 a day coz of this hack. whats going on? its damaged my boards.

what was wrong in the first place? well i was copping the same errors as djrocketboy and followed his prompts and installed it, but i wanted to un install it because njothing worked well.. now i un installed it and its gone crazy. help me can ya

The Geek

There is no problem.

When you uninstall, it copies the uninstalled changes to gas/changes. You have to manually move them back (the readme talks about how the changes take place). If you downloaded the backups - just replace your current files with those as long as you havent installed any other hacks since then.

It has gone crazy because you are running hacked files, but uninstalled all other aspect. In essence, its only partially uninstalled. Sorry if that was unclear in the readme (its pretty detailed).

i am confused. im inbetween uninstalling and installing, if i re install this can it fix it everything?

axi
04-08-2005, 06:54 PM
it ssays:

The script will also create backups of the files it tries to change in gas/changes/backup (the installer will not touch those. They are there in case you need them)

it never created backup folder

The Geek
04-08-2005, 06:54 PM
yes.

Installing puts in the templates, phrases, and table needed for the system.
it also makes the file changes for you but does not copy them over to their original location for you (as a safety feature).
When you uninstall, it removes the phrases, templates and the gas table. It then tries to copy over the existing files to gas/changes and then it uninstalls the file changes.
When that is done, you have to move the files back over yourself (as a safety feature).
You did all the uninstall steps except for copying the uninstalled files back. Therefore you are running on half a system.

So either reinstall the system (dont bother with the file changes) OR copy back the uninstalled file chages.

Just use your forums.

Have a forums called articles, a sub forum called 'articles on cheese' another called 'franks homemade articles', etc...

Then mark them all as article forums

Where can I increase the size of the popup that displays all generic icons at the root of the gas/images folder?
edit the GAS_image_upload template and change the follwing lines static numbers to whatever you need:

window.resizeTo(($windowwidth + 150),($windowheight+292));

windowwidth and windowheight is supposed to be the total width and height of gallery. The static figures are offsets to account for spacing, the close field and upload field.

Take a second to toggle the install button when you get one ;)

Thanks. I've got more than 400 thumb images in there and scrolling to all of them seem to be acomplished only when I maximize. If so is the case, how can I increase the columns to display more than 4 images?

The Geek
04-11-2005, 10:18 AM
Wow. Thats a lot!

You can do that by editing the GAS_image_upload.php file in your forum directory.
The 4 columns is hard coded in but can easily be changed with a few tweaks.

Hope this helps

The importer worked perfectly... i mean the articles became threads and everytyhing, i was hable to view them and see them as just regular threads... the problem came when I tried implementing the GAS articles... i went into the GAS admincp options and set the forum number and then that problem... as I said, the articles title appear and the images too (the one of the newspaper) but is kind of messed up... and when you click in the article titles only the reply button and quick reply appear.... hope you can help me...

Geek, a random or featured article thing would be cool, but I would love to see something else made/fixed.

When I post in my news forum vBPortal picks it up and projects it on the homepage, it picks up a default image or it picks up the image that's attached.

When I use a forum that's transformed into a Geek Article Forum and put this forum in vbportal settings to be projected on the homepage it does works fine, but not the attached image!!

So the news.php file of vBPortal needs an adjustment/addition of the part of your scripts that would pick up that image that is attached to an Geek Article.

Question on the V3Articles Importer. Does it affect the original articles, or is that stuff still there until I delete it?

Basically, I guess what I want to know is, if I do the import and I decide I liked it better or want to go with another hack, I'm I stuck having my articles in a forum? Or can I go back to the way they were?

Julie - It doesnt touch the original v3articles so you can always go back. There is also a rollback feature to remove the articles you imported into GAS

Hey Geek, first off I gotta say you got some killer hacks ;) I had Geek Articles 3.5 and Geek Gallery Popup working together just fine, but with Articles 3.51 installation, due to other hacks being installed, I had to do the manaul file edits :rolleyes:

I hit a snag with the file edit for Newthread.php. What happens is when I tried to integrate the Articles hack and Gallery pop up hack, the newthread.php in my Articles forum displays as normal... no byline, image uploader, nothing. But the Open link under the smilie box shows just fine. If I remove the Geek_Gallery_Popup from the Phrasegroups = Array, it goes back to working as the Articles hack should.

Anyway, here's the edit with both hacks:

//=== GAS Step 500 ===
$phrasegroups = array('threadmanage', 'posting','Geek_Gallery_Popup','geek_articles',);

Did I do something wrong? Sorry if I'm not making too much sense, this has been a long day, and you seem to have enough to worry about. I did try searching the thread for a similar problem/solution, but like I said, I'm out of it.

Hey Jason - honestly - that cant have anything to do with the problem. It MUST be something else. Adding an extra phrasegroup, or removing it will not affect any hack (unless it needs that phrasegroup).

I am going to transfer all my cinq's articles one by one (thank God there are only 40 :-)). I am planning to create a forum and put all articles categories in subforums. I'd love to be able to pull from those and display as I do currently as per attached.

First thumb: how they display in center page
second thumb, a hack in global.php to display in header
third thumb, categories (these could be hardcoded)

The Geek

THe first one is pretty much integrated.

THe other two would have to be ad ons that dont really exist right now. Once again - I would totally supprt whoever wanted to give it a go. I would do it now if I wernt so manic with GAS, GAL, and GAB (and also GPOP).

They are not really overly dificult hacks to do.
