vB Link Directory v2.0*new*

News on new versions
? vB Links Directory 2.0 Build 250 is almost here, it summarizes all the fixes, and has template fixes including spelling fixes new template look, template look fixes, and over all some organization of the templates.
? vB Links Directory 3.0 development is complete. We will be releasing this privatly to select few, and will be discussing futher public release later on.

What Does it do?
This hack allows you to have a database of links, you add catagories and users may add there site, this is sort of a Links Management, but more organized and attractive, with easy to use admin panel, built in search panel and more.

This Hack should work on ALL 2.2.x versions.

Installation:
- Open readme.txt and follow the instructions
- Upload links.php to your forum root, and weblinksadmin.php to your forum admin dir.

If you are running the previous version, there are upgrade instructions in the zip.
I have included also a new 'Installer', 'Un-Installer' and 'Upgrade' Feature to reduce hassle, and help you upgrade your version, install a new copy, or uninstall at ease. If any problems occure, please PM me immediatly.

Minor mistake in Top 10 Visited Sites, if you have validation enabled, pleae download the new zip, and overwrite the links.php with the new one, if you don't...I would suggest you still download the new links.php and overwrite it.

There was a little error in Top 10 Visited sites, if you downloaded the zip after the new zip file, please download this new zip file, and replace the links.php file with the one in this zip.

There was an error with the code in the upgrade file, if you upgraded, and the hack didn't work, please run this query in PhpMyAdmin

Database field error. Some fields in the links table, including hits, link url etc, are of wrong value, and on the Top 10 Links when a site gets 99 hits, it will go back to 0 hits and start again. If you have installed vB Links Directory before July 10th 2003 then please CLICK HERE (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&postid=416856#post416856) to download the file db_fix.php. Follow the instructions in the post.

AFTER INSTALLATION YOU MUST GO TO VBULLETIN OPTIONS, AND SUBMIT THE OPTIONS, AFTER YOU CHANGE THE VALIDATION OPTION. THIS IS MANDATORY, DO THIS EVEN IF YOU WISH TO HAVE VALIDATION.

Also out of respect I ask that you please do not release revamped versions of this hack as a new one, I have put countless hours into working on the basic functions, and coding it, and I would really be dissappointed. Thanks

No, but through the View ALL Links feature, you are able to view all the links in all the catagories, and you may edit them accordingly, ones that are not catagorized are listed as well.

I have added that to replace the link moderation.

More features are yet to come.

Cool :) I'm going to add some of my own features to it (search, hit count, admin approval) today.

Oh, if you want your links to be ordered A-Z, then change (in links.php) the following:

$asb = $DB_site->query("SELECT * FROM gportal_weblinkslink WHERE catagoryid=$catid")

on line 23 to:

$asb = $DB_site->query("SELECT * FROM gportal_weblinkslink WHERE catagoryid=$catid ORDER BY linkname");

Ok - admin approval is done now, too... I had a links directory hack of my own which was almost done, but buggy - so I've managed to salvage some code to expand this hack :)

I'll only make these mods public if the creator of this hack approves, though...

What they do:

Search -- self explanatory :)

Hit counter -- when a user clicks a link, they go via a redirect page which increases a hit counter in the links db, and as such displays the new total in the linkbit

Validation -- when a user submits a link, it is not displayed until the admin moderates it. admin can moderate link title, url, description, and even delete the link if he wishes.

Yep, have it running on my site now :) We only have 4 links though, so the search needs to be a word you KNOW is there LOL

If you would like to have an option to search the links in the database, please download this links.php and replace the one in your forum root.

*Note*
Ensim users will not be able to use this search feature, ensim and the php has some sort of problem quering fetch arrays. I will look into this problem with my host and try to come up with a good solutions.

This was created by Mark B, and modified a bit and integrated into the links.php by me for easier maintenance, and less cluter.

Now to add the link at the bottom of the main template to the search form, open up the template 'drkslinks_main' and find:

I would like to thank Mark B for the 'Validate a link' addon, which was modified by me to make it be able to be toggled on and off.

I would like to thank him for the original search addon aswell, which was modified to work on other servers, and was modified to use like and replacement words and to work in conjuction with original hack for re-query searching.

And once more I would like to thank Mark B for the hits addon, which is as he coded with minor modifications.

I would like to thank Xenon, NTLDR, and Velocd who helped me modify the search, and TECK (Though he may not know it) for teaching me how to toggle stuff through Admin CP.

I am at the moment coding an installer, for this, after I am finished this, the new zip will be up.

I just noticed too, that you re-used the HTML for the templates from your gallery hack. The title of your pages is set to "Image Gallery". Might wanna change that. ;) And I hope there'll be an upgrade path in the installer! :smoke:

Hi, this is very wierd, it has not happend on any other sites.

v2 has a template installer as well, so it will manually install the templates, hopefully this will be fixed by then, can you please check the main template.

Ah hehe, that is the add link right?

Well my image gallery was the first template integrated hack I had made, so it was special :laugh:

Anyways, i will look into fixing it, and I am trying to figure out how to upgrade, but Im sure it can be done :)

I would suggest for v2 to remove all the templates, and files, and the installer will alter your database tables, and install new templates auto matically :)

I'm getting the following error message when I go to www.nissanpower.net/forum/links.php

I installed the hack to the T, ran the mysql queries and I'm getting the following error message.

Database error in vBulletin 2.2.8:

Invalid SQL: SELECT * FROM gportal_weblinkscat ORDER BY webcatid

I deleted the databases and recreated them, but I'm having the same problem. The only thing that I noticed was that in phpmyadmin, when I point my mouse over the database, the database is highlight, however, half of it in red and half of it in blue. I hope this makes sense to you, if it doesn't, I can take a screen shot.

Sorry to hear about your problems at school DrkFusion.

I know you have more important things to worry about so I'll just post this in case somebody else can come up with a fix for it.

This is a great hack and I need it badly, but I'm encountering the same problem Dan Flynn is -- nothing shows up.

Installation was smooth as honey, templates installed, and it worked great before I cleared all my cookies. Then it all went blank.

Breathlessly awaiting a reply ;)

The template should work perfectly, there may be errors, when you possibly download it, so try right-clicking and going to save target as, not sure, because all the templates have the full code.

I reinstalled this on my test forum and still nothing. When I go to www.powerwashnetwork.com/links.php or my test board forum/links.php

All I get is htmldoctype on a blanke page. I went to myphpadmin to see if the tables were there. They are and the also have the test links and categories in them.

I noticed that on the links.php page or the category page. The list of categories is not in alphabetical order. But when you click on a category the links in the category are. Is there a way to alphabeticalize the catagories too?

Also a spelling typo on that same page. the word category is spelled wrong.

small Problem..all is working fine on 2.2.8 except the CATEGORY DESCRIPTION.

It wont add it and if I try to add it in the Admin Panel then it wont add anything...but if I just put the Category name with No description it works fine....but then the LINKS Description works Fine ...url to my board below

Great...is there a list of new features? I was thinking of adding to it as well. One thought I had was to add the total links to each top level category, also a New Links as well as Hot links etc...is there going to be sub category support?

No there won't be Sub-Cat support, because I a new to Php, and I don't know how to do it...actually I do, but if you say its not hard, I will do it I got an idea of how to do it, but you know time is precious :) Maybe in the next big release after 2.

Here are the list of New features that are already coded in and ones to be coded.
- Built in Search *done*
- Link Validation (Can be turned on/off in cp) *done*
- How many clicks on a link *done*
- Top 10 Links (ordered by Hits) aka List of Hot Links
- Latest added Links
- Rate Link *Maybe...Maybe*

DrkFusion ... People on my site are forgetting to select a Category from the DROP DOWN box...when they dont choose a category the link doesnt gett added...(Well it does but it doesnt show..it is in the database and i can see it with phpmyadmin)

Do you have a QUICK Fix for me for this....i have about 75 Links not showing up and everyone e-mailing me about this.

Anyway for it to generate a error like " Hey Dummy..Choose a category :o)"

DOHHH...Simple fix...lol..this might help others in this thread that have this problem.

Add this:

value="http://"

to template drkslinks_addnewlink

so it now looks like this:

This will add http:// automatically into the field. If people dont put in http:// that is why you get the messed up URL

OK ...Hope this helps ..saw others had this problem.

If a user doesn't select a catagory, this will bring an error, and prompt the user to press the back button, and select a catagory.

1. open the drkslinks_addnewlink template in your admin control panel, and replace everything with the attatched files.

2. Open links.php in the forum root, and find:

add under it:

Well, I have been working on v2, taking suggestions for new features, I will be releasing that soon, but a friend of mine (mist) has been suggesting some more great features to add, so I will be looking into that.

Version 2, is at the moment 99% done in my point of view, but for instance in Mist's point of view, its like 75% done, because of the lack of the other feature, I will possibly post new screenshots soon, I would suggest to you to wait for v2, but I will include upgrade instructions in the v2 release.

The instructions for the current release are full, but I believe there is a minor template mistake.

AWESOME HACK! One of the best and easiest to install that I have seen around here. Nice job. Im just testing it out right now and its working fine on 2.2.4

I have one question...is it possible to rearrange the categories once you post them? What if I want to move one main category to the top of the list, or to the bottom, or anywhere in between? Is that possible to do without having to reenter all of the links?

I found a strange bug. Whenever I try to enter a link in the link description box with an apostrophe like:

It's a great site, Straight from the horse's mouth etc....

It will not post the link. It wont post when I do it from the forums, as well as from the admin cp. Even if I try to edit the link description text in the admin cp, the edits to not take effect. Only edits without apostrophes change.

I couldn't figure out why one of my links wasn't posting and this is what it came down to. Is this happening for anyone else?

I believe right now it orders it all alphabetically, but if you add a new field to the cat dir, and then just number it off 1-x, and then in links.php have it organize by the field name, i guess that would work.

It is a bug. I've tried this on three different forums here that have this hack installed. Why not try yourself to add a link to your own link database with an apostrophe anywhere in the link description? If you are using the code you posted here, it won't work.

For example, on two of the sites, I registered and entered in a link for Google. Here is the info I put in.

Link Name = Google
Link URL = http://www.google.com
Category = Search Engines
Description = It's the greatest search engine on earth.
------------------------------

The link did not work for this entry on 3 sites I have tested.

If I enter this:

Then the link works.

Just giving you a heads up. A few of my members were wondering why their links weren't showing up at all.

Can't wait! This is a great hack which opens a lot of possibilities. I was looking for a way to do this exact same thing and now my users can do it too which is great.

I was thinking about another thing...don't know if this is going to be in version 2. My links don't display in alphabetical order. The first link entered remains at the top, second link underneath etc...

I think from a user standpoint, it should either be the other way around, or they should be alphabetical, because down the road when someone adds a link and it goes all the way to the bottom its not as efficient. If thats something being worked on then disregard that.

One more thing which would really be cool. I wonder if there is a way to break up the categories...for example on my site I have film links and then web links. It would be nice if I could make a divider between the two sections to differentiate them from each other, know what I mean? Just like on the vB forum home page how major sections are split up. Just an idea. I don't know anything about php, I just follow the instructions in the hacks lol.

I think that link rating would be a good idea, maybe you can write in some code that will let other sites put your racing html on there site to let there visitors help get higher ranks in the database?

the only thing that I would say about rating is that if you are going to be listing the entries via their rating, make sure that you give new sites at least 15 days at the top so they have a chance of getting a rating too :)

Very cool hack and I just had to modify the code a bit to get it to display properly on all my board styles.

I have only one question, where do we look to set this up to validate links first? I don't see this anywhere. I know I have added it to the admin CP but the validate part don't show up. Just the edit, view, etc....

I plan to work with my hack, these features are all one which I plan to release with next big release. Thanks for your help, but this is a hack which I would like to get through my self. Subcats are in the works for my own site for testing, advanced search has been already done, but not released and link rating is in the works, I am trying to get input from everyone for new features, because I would like to make the next big release of this hack full of nice features.

I am willing to have you 2 beta-test these features for me, as they get finished, you will be provided information on how to implement it, and how to use it.

Release date of 3.0 has not yet been given out, but everyone can expect that I will be working with my hacks, and coming hacks to contribute to the community as before.

Great hack, seems to be working well, couple of issues though.

Where in the Admin CP should I go to Validate added links as I don't see this anywhere?

Also, unvalidated links are appearing in the "Top 10 Visited" page?

Also, I would like to place links.php outside my forum directory, what do I need to change to allow this to work? as I get the following error when I move it right now :

Fatal error: Failed opening required './global.php' (include_path='') in /home/username/public_html/links.php on line 2

Alright move the links.php outside your forum dir and find:
require("./global.php");
to:
chdir("./forum/dir");
require("./global.php");
That should do it, replace forum/dir with the path to your forum dir.

I just want to update all of you guys of addons I will release here.

- Advanced Search Engine
.: Allow you to search by catagory, and gives you the option to select if it should search the link name, link description etc.

- Sub-Catagories
.: Allow you to make catagories within categories to offer even more detailed catagorization of links

- Link Rating
.: Allow you to rate a link from 1-5, the votes will be averaged out and displayed to help new people judge which sites are worth visiting.

- Link Ownership (This will be made default feature in 2.5)
.: Allow the username to be assigned to a link, so it can be edited, or removed.

I will be releasing them, along with the help of Dark_Wizard. I can assure you that I will be keeping everyone updated on this links directory hack, so that you can get the best out of it, and you can basically implement this into your main site, and have a nice stable links directory with proffesional aspect.

I will also be releasing a tutorial on how to make this into a search engine, and how to modify the templates to get your general looks, as I wish to make this hack as user-friendly as I can possibly make it.

I will be going through the coding tonight, and fixing up all tiny bugs to make it more organized, for better experiences.

I hope everyone who intalls this will enjoy it, and take full advantage of it. I am here to support you every afternoon.

I think it is important to also show the date a link was added so people can tell if they have seen new ones or not.

Also I never touched the enable link validation, it simply appeared all on it's own.

Also how many links will appear on a page before it starts a new page or will it?

The script is set to validate by default.
I didn't take pages into account, let me work on that as well, I will make an option so you as the admin will be able to set how much per page, then it will start a new page.

Can anyone tell me why my site is not using the forums white background where the text links are, but the sites graphical background instead? Seen Here: http://www.rcnitrotalk.com/forum/links.php

I have tried what DrkFusion stated, but it then used bizarre colors that are not even used on my forum and some how creates a gradient in part of it.

Anyone have any fixes for this?
