Hi,
This hack is very useful thank you, can be viewed at
Anyway I made a little mod, I don't know how this will be affected by the update.
Original code
Modified code
Basically I can now count the number of items in each category so if you see I get a total links in category.
If you haven't already done this thought it would make a nice addition, can you let me know if your db update php will affect my mod please?
Regards
Russ
Yes, this is in the 2.0 updated version. I will be posting screenshots in a sec. Just it has minor updates.

Can someone help please?
I have registered members and Premium (Group) members.
I only want to allow the Premium group members to be able to submit links.
How can I get this done?
Somebody please help?
Max
I've decided to let the user define which groups can add links. This will be added in Build 250 of v2.

How soon is the next version coming? I didn't want to publish and tell my users about the link directory until I got my small text problem fixed.
Will it be an easy upgrade?

Hi,
Not being ungrateful and maybe your nationality isn't English but its category not catagory here. Maybe its a US spelling? Either way I went through and replaced it all myself and now it gives me a db_fix error lol :D
Excellent mod though thanks, you've saved me weeks of coding.

Yes actually I am not the original coder of this hack.
That spelling error though is fixed in the new version. DB_Fix error? Anything that is in the templates and is not variablized can be fixed through chaning of the template. You cannot change the database tables though.

Right now the upgrade is manual, I want to test it out. It was given to SaintDog of spyderwire for testing. It is not up as of yet, but it should be soon. If everything goes ok, I will automate it and release it. The upgdate is VERSION 2 : BUILD 250. Not version 3. I can post the manual upgrade few hours after the SpyderWire one is put up though, if anyone wants to install it manually.
Also some good news, queries are reduced, not as many templates, not as many spelling errors, not as many code errors. Most of it is all fixed :)

DOes anyone know how to change the color on this?
Cindy, if you change your table tag to the following it will make it a color that works better. Or change to any other value for the color of your choice
border="10" bordercolor="#234123">

Keptic, is there any info on when and if v3.0 will be released? I'd love to install this hack but if v3.0 is due for release soon, i'll wait.

vB Link Directory v2.0 News on new versions
? vB Links Directory 2.0 Build 250 is almost here, it summarizes all the fixes, and has template fixes including spelling fixes new template look, template look fixes, and over all some organization of the templates.
? vB Links Directory 3.0 development is complete. We will be releasing this privatly to select few, and will be discussing futher public release later on.^ It looks like he posted this on the top of this thread a few days ago... ;)
I have a question: When I first installed version 2.0 several months ago, I went through the templates and database and corrected all of the the misspellings of "category." When I upgrade to Build 250, will that be a problem?
Thanks... and keep up the great work! :)

Sorry for not articulating my question: will the upgrade to 250 look for instances of "catagory" and get stuck (especially in the SQL query) when it doesn't find any? Forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I'm pretty sure all instances of Catagory were fixed in build 250 of v2.0 though

The upgrade will actually drop all the templates and reinstall them, as some templates have been dropped from use, for better vB integration, and less query loads.

While we're waiting for some of the new releases to come out, I thought it might be fun to share our experiences with our own installations. I installed mine about four months ago, right around the time Keptic announced he would be undertaking the "upgrade" project. So, I populated a number of categories with links, and then went through the process of correcting every instance of "catagory" with "category" in the templates and database (I love teaching myself how to do things, and this gave me a great experience in working with the underpinnings of PHP and SQL commands, so I can't complain! :) ) Besides, we're an education organization concerned with language and making sure we set a good example for our students.
I previously had a static (HTML-based) links section on my site, and it was a hassle to update five different files (categories) all the time. While converting all of the links from my old pages into the new database, I did, however, wait on one category, since it has a number of sub-categories. I was kind of hoping for the new subcategory feature in the 3.0 release, but I might put them in before the new school year starts.

It will be weeks, or months undecided, but let me assure you it will be released. I would suggest upgrading to Build 250, using the manual upgrade, I will get an automated upgrade, and a new version out asap.
They contain some new features as well, including less templates, less query loads, and faster loading.

On the breadcrumb inside the categories, there is a backwards slash (\) instead of a forwards slahs (/), which does not allow you to click the link back to the "links directory" main page.
Otherwise, the links on the bottom all work, and everything is a little "cleaner." The absence of the "visit links" bracketed text next to every link is a huge improvement! And, I love the count of links in each category on the main page.

DEMO: http://www.shukenja.com/forum/links.php
Features I'd like to see...
- Add Sub-catigories
- Sub-Catigory visial links under primary catigory link.
- Being able to chose the listing order of links in catigories or sub-catigories, similar to how forums are ordered in the main vb admin cp.
not sure if these are in vb3.0 but this new version of vb 2.12 is a vast improvement, and everything seems a lot more stable. Thanks for posting it. I can finally use the script.

Oh no!!! :surprised: Let's not confuse the spelling of "category," just after it's been fixed!;)
It would also be a nice feature to have icons/avatars for the various categories. This might require an upload script to be able to put these in, and that could get quite complicated :confused:...
I think I posted some other feature ideas in the "3.0" thread (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49998).

Ok problems
I just ran the version 2.5 update, I have some issues
Firstly I have to update a template called drkslinks template, I cannot find said template.
the drkslinks and drkslinks_addnewlink aren't formatted correctly and have no new lines in them so its hard to read.
Category is still misspelt everywhere.
And now my www.zclub.net/forum/links.php does nadda, nothing, and is broke from the upgrade :(
Any ideas please? I'm disappointed as version 2 worked perfectly and did really well for me.

cindyd
07-20-2003, 03:29 PM
Afternoon Keptic.....I had the templates previously moderated, as I didn't want all the header info at the top of the main table.....now you have this line inthe code:
<body>$header$navbar<normalfont>$navgon</normalfont><br><br>
If I remove $header and put the actual text in there that I want, will it be OK?
DrkFusion

Yes...but try to follow the same table structure if you keep the footer that is.
Test around :) If it doesn't work revert it back :)

Keptic: when I originally installed this hack, it directed me to input a "test" link. After that I deleted it, but on certain searches it will show up and I don't know how to get rid of it.
It doesn't show up on any category, just under Popular links and newest links
Screen shot attached.
Is there a way to get rid of it?
jacobi
07-20-2003, 08:04 PM
cindyd -- that's a strange problem. I tried creating a test link, then deleting it, and even recreating it and "making" it popular, calling it up as a popular link; then deleting it, and I could not recreate that error.
keptic -- I found a few more problems:
Links are no longer alphabetized within their categories. <<Example Link Category>> (http://www.wfcaforensics.org/forum/links.php?action=viewlinks&catid=6) They appear in the order inputted. I realize there is no way to manually override the order, but it would be nice if they were at least alphabetized.
I still cannot change the name of a link in the Admin CP -- I can, however, edit the description. There's a case where I used an ampersand (the "&" sign), and it parses wrong, and I tried to edit it to read "and," and it wouldn't work, even though it told me it did.
These are minor bugs, as far as I'm concerned, but it would be nice to have them fixed for the next version. ;)
Thanks!

In links.php..
change this:
$links = $DB_site->query("
SELECT *
FROM gportal_weblinkslink
WHERE catagoryid = $catid AND valid= '1'
");
to this:
$links = $DB_site->query("
SELECT *
FROM gportal_weblinkslink
WHERE catagoryid = $catid AND valid= '1' ORDER BY linkname ASC
");
This should do it...

I'll tell ya AJ, if it's somethine weird, strange or just plain out there, it will happen to me!
I also found in the Add a link section, all the "category" words are spelled wrong.
I had that parse error with the & also.
I requested a hack similiar to the smilie hack that would allow us to put in the links in an order of our choosing, but alpha would work for me right now.

I've done all 3 of your fixes, but with the same results. The admin panel is also giving dbase errors left and right.
for View all links:
Invalid query id specified
mysql error:
mysql error number: 0
For edit link in admin panel:
Invalid SQL:
SELECT *
FROM gportal_weblinkscat
WHERE webcatid = '2'
ORDER BY linkid
mysql error: Unknown column 'linkid' in 'order clause'
mysql error number: 1054
and for add new link, after selecting the category:
Invalid SQL:
SELECT *
FROM gportal_weblinkscat
WHERE webcatid = '2'
ORDER BY linkid
mysql error: Unknown column 'linkid' in 'order clause'

If i'm the only one dealing with this, I can redo the hack, but if its something in the hack, I'll help to try hunting it down. So just let me know. Is anyone else getting strange behavior after the update?

I noticed, that for some odd reason (I'm only a novice at PHP), when you copy and paste the PHP code off these posts, it doesn't quite transfer correctly. So, the workaround I figured out is to click "quote," whereby it will take the code and quote it for a new reply post, and then copy that text (minus the bbCode, of course). Does that make sense?

I'm experiencing this same problem. I started with the build attached to the original post, then applied the 250 upgrade and did the Dark_Wizard edits (at least one of which was already in the latest 250 build). I'm running vB 2.2.8.

Yes, they are awaiting validation. The link submissions go through and enter the validation queue, but the URL & description are gone by then. Also, when I turn off validation, the link gets added to the category, but again, the URL & desc. are missing.

Woohoo! I found the fix to the last problem.
In links.php, find this:
if ($catid=="0" OR $catid=="" OR $linkname=="" OR $linkurl=""){
$errormessage = 'You have missed one or more of the required fields. Please press you back button and fill them in. You are missing:<blockquote>';
if ($catid=="0" or $catid=="") { $errormessage.= '<b>? Category</b><br>'; }
if ($linkname=="") { $errormessage.= '<b>? Link Name</b><br>'; }
if ($linkurl="" or $linkurl="http://") { $errormessage.= '<b>? Link URL</b> - Make sure it is in proper format of <i>http://url-to-domain.com</i>'; }
$errormessage .= '</blockquote>';
eval("dooutput(\"".gettemplate('standarderror')."\");");
Replace with this:
if ($catid=="0" OR $catid=="" OR $linkname=="" OR $linkurl==""){
$errormessage = 'You have missed one or more of the required fields. Please press you back button and fill them in. You are missing:<blockquote>';
if ($catid=="0" or $catid=="") { $errormessage.= '<b>? Category</b><br>'; }
if ($linkname=="") { $errormessage.= '<b>? Link Name</b><br>'; }
if ($linkurl="" or $linkurl="http://") { $errormessage.= '<b>? Link URL</b> - Make sure it is in proper format of <i>http://url-to-domain.com</i>'; }
$errormessage .= '</blockquote>';
eval("dooutput(\"".gettemplate('standarderror')."\");");
In the if() condition, it had $linkurl="" and that had to be changed to $linkurl=="" with two equal signs.
It's working!
Great hack, and lots of work by a number of people it seems. Thanks to you all.

We will be completly going through the code and fixing bugs. This should be a stable release in matter of few days. We will also be releasing v3 in a matter of weeks. We will be sending out a final testing for all beta testers.
So expect v3 soon. We are also reworking the code for v3, to make it function better, and the admin and options are being COMPLETLY rewritten.

I am the original coder of vB Links Directory 2.0. I coded this awhile back while starting coding, let me assure everyone that we are much more intelligent with our coding. Keptic has not gotten a chance to do alot of coding, but in v3, he will be recoding many of the parts, he codes smart, and his main worry is functionality, and integration. Mine will be features.
We have a great product lined up for you guys. Free of charge.
I hope everyone will stick with us to see one of the more bigger, and well-featured hacks :)

The upgrade goes through without a problem, but you get database errors when you try to access the scipt in the admin CP (yes I also submitted the vb options as asked in the instructions).
I then ran an uninstall and a install from scratch (and of course submitted the vb options again!), and I still got the problem going on. Files are hacked properly, anyone else getting this issue?

Odd.. Has anyone tried the 250 upgrade script/install script that Dark_Wizard attached from this post?:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?postid=419707#post419707
The upgrade goes through without a problem, but you get database errors when you try to access the scipt in the admin CP (yes I also submitted the vb options as asked in the instructions).
I then ran an uninstall and a install from scratch (and of course submitted the vb options again!), and I still got the problem going on. Files are hacked properly, anyone else getting this issue?
Can you be more specific? What are the exact error messages? Do a view source on the error page and paste it into a post here so I can fix it...

Still the same problem unfortunately. :( I submitted the 'validate' thing in options, and all files are hacked perfectly. I can click on "Add Category" without error, and submit a category with no error. I cannot click on 'links' to add a link though without that error above. When I also click on "view all links" it brings up the error again. Fix make work! :D

Just an FYI.
Arunan has contacted me to say that he no longer has a vb license and is asking me to takeover and complete the vB Links Directory 3.0 hack. I have been working on this as well as my vbWar hack and will get a beta out soon.
The first round of beta testers will need to be people who can offer to test this as a full install and not an upgrade as I need time to write that part of the script. I will also continue to work with 2.0 to get it stable before the final release of 3.0.
Arunan sends his regards and apologies.....

I want to use this hack and I have it installed, but I am thinking of uninstalling it. If I use it, is there a way to allow my users to be notified of the newest links in the directory through the new threads or something?
Right now I have a CoolLinks forum and just have links posted in there. It seems to work OK, because it's a forum it puts the new links into the newest threads and also at the top of the page where I have an iframe showing the latest posts on my forumz. Can this hack do anything like this or do something so that links aren't just lost within the directory without anybody even knowing they've been added?
If you can help me with this problem, that would be great.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

There is a '10 latest hacks' list which I'm sure you can rework to show up on your index or wherever. It's just the results of a query you perform on the database. Put it in a nice layout and you should be set...

.: Upload vbldir_install.php to your admin directory
++ .: To Install, Click new Installation, and follow on-screen instructions
++ .: To Upgrade, Click Upgrade, and follow instructions
++ This will add tables, settings, and templates
++ *NOTE IF YOU ARE UPGRADING*
++ -delete all templates in your template set with the prefix "drkslinks_"
++ you must do this, so the installation will work.

You guys are getting way off topic... but, the bet way I've found for the dynamic age is vBindex. It is very simple and easy to hack to your liking... some of the others are overly complicated. Take a look at my site... all the non-forum pages are driven from forum content that I've twisted into the way I want it from vBindex. Use the nav bar up top to see them.
gmarik
09-28-2003, 12:04 PM

09-28-2003, 05:57 PM
Do a search in the hacks portion of this site for vBindex. Read the support thread. You'll find what you need. I posted a lot of what I did in that thread.
I'll have to look at what I did for that page you mentioned. I think it's just a copy and template rewrite of viewthread, but I don't recall at the moment. This is really getting way off topic here, so please start another thread if you want to continue discussion, or move it to vBindex thread...

I just installed this. Went very smooth and was done with the setup in under a few minutes. I am still very new to adding hacks found it very easy. Its going to be a big help for me on my site. Thanks!
Just a little feedback:
- For newbies like me, you may want to include a reminder note in the directions to upload the rest of the files other than the vbldir_install.php.
- I wanted to adjust spacing of things in the footer and if possible, you might want to consider one template to run the bottom links and credits. I wanted to remove some breaks to tighten it up a little and found I had to go into a bunch of the other templates to make the same changes across all the Links related pages.
- I found that I could add links through the Admin CP fine but links added from the links page were not showing up on the public pages. I applied MarkB's tweak that corrected the problem found in this post:

Before I handed over this project to Dark_Wizard, this has all been fixed. All it needed was query optimization, which most of it was.
Sorry guys I really don't know whats up with the development of this hack. DW has been doing a good job, I will talk to him about taking re-development of this hack again, he has many great hacks that he MUST focus on to make perfecto, it seems this is just a burden to him (hehe)

While I'm looking forward to the new version, has anyone ever updated all the reported bugs and problems with 2.5 that I and others have mentioned? It was released, then never followed up upon beyond an attempt or two at fixes.. Any updates?
...and as I recall, 2.5 was to be the upgrade path to 3.0, so whatever happened to it? Check pages 44,45,46 in case you need a reminder. We were left hanging! :D

Yes and it has a small bug which I'm working on...I'm working as fast as I can as I am juggling 4 hacks right now and with a heavy workload at work and home I can only get so much done in a day...

Just installed this and it's working great, thanks! I was wondering whether it would be possible to include a few extra features?
* the ability to move a link from one category to another in the admin
* the ability to choose in the admin whether to add 5, 10, or 20 new links all at once
* show the total number of links in a category on the main Links page
* sub-categories?
* the ability to "stick" links so that they appear first on the list (maybe the same for categories?)
How difficult would they be to implement?

waiting for my beta test, :) can't wait to try and help get this stable as well as use it.
Features: ?
*abblity to turn on or off public adding of links, or usergroup support, and or admin only etc.
*If public links turned on then admin validation for link.
I don't know if this is in yet as I haven't been able to test yet, I have clean install that can run the test :)
quick question: Is there any way to add who submited the link? The reason I ask is I have the same link sometimes porn show up to be validated and it is just getting old. I would like to know if there is a way to find out who submited the link so I can email them.

Kind of on the same lines, I also dont want just any kind of links not relevant to my site added and thought I had seen in this thread somewhere that Admin approval before the link was published was going to to be added.
Is this possible? If not, I guess I can simply remove the "Submit Link" options from public veiw.
Thanks :)

Nevermind, I modified the "Admin/Mod Login Template Edit" hack by Unknown553 and did basicly the same thing as that hack and made the "Submit A Link" link hidden except for Admin and Mods.
A simple work around for my needs.

OK guys, here is the final decision!
I will wrap up all bugs and coding/spelling errors in the v2 series. This would end the PRODUCTION and if it is bug-free, and is tested as working for all versions I list it as compatible with. I will close all production of the v2 series.
Please note the final version of v2.5 (the latest update by me) has already some spelling fixtures and query reductions, there are only minor bugs that I wish to fix in it.
About v3
We will make one for vb2 and release it immediatly, following the closure of v2 production. It will be made in a NEW THREAD posted by DRKFUSION this is because I wish to have 2 versions for the users to choose, the v3 series will eventually only be supported for vBulletin 3.
